Real representation & the fickleness of cancel culture
"
Amber (A): The success of our podcast has truly been amazing. We’re so happy to know that we can reach people worldwide and educate them on topics whether it's political or fashion-based. It feels like we're building a community of likeminded people. A: We’re passionate about representation in all areas and levels of the fashion business. While it’s great for brands to collaborate with black influencers and creatives, we want to see more representation in organisations where it really matters. Incorporating diversity really makes a difference; it moves brands away from seeming performative or disingenuous in addressing ongoing racial inequality.

Prinny (P): I believe that cancel culture is necessary to hold brands to account. However, the problem is that in this day and age people quickly forget and go on to support and buy from the brands that they had cancelled momentarily. This makes it difficult for brands to take accountability and respond in an authentic way, because they know they just have to do a few performative things to tick boxes and regain support from consumers. P: I fall in love with every new episode of the podcast that we record. My favourite is one of our more recent recordings called Just Vibes. It covers so much from blind dating, the message behind Cardi B's song WAP to crazy life epiphanies.

MY UNTOLD HAIR JOURNEY
By Freddie Harrel
Photography by Ben Fourmi
Coils made from 100% recycled fibers
We all have a hair story to tell. Some might be successful while others may be filled with disasters and setbacks. Either way, they’re all worth sharing. Freddie Harrel, founder of Radswan (formerly known as Big Hair Don’t Care), has a journey steeped in twists and turns - much like the coils on her newly relaunched naturalinspired wig range. In a candid conversation, she reveals where it all began for her burgeoning hair empire...

“If my life depended on me styling my hair, I’d be in big trouble. I’ve managed to get the most basic skills down, but I’ve had some major run-ins over the years. Especially that one time during a semester in Shanghai when I saved for months to get a $500 lace wig only to have glue dripping down my forehead.
Models wear RadSwan wigs in styles Radshape 01 to 03
“I wish I was more patient and conciliant. But I struggle, be it with my hair, career, shoes or houses – you can’t tell me I can’t get what I want and expect me to run with it. There’s always a way...
“But that’s what makes the journey interesting. Hair is a playground where all the Freddies in me feel they can go all out safely. Hair to me is Sundays kneeling between your mother’s or auntie’s legs; it’s your cousin or newlymade friend combing lovingly through your hair while you detangle your life out loud. Hair embodies my freest and earliest form of self-expression. I’m a shape shifter. I get to forever reintroduce my various angles and tell all my stories to a world that often feels constrained and biased. “When it comes to shopping for self-expression, in particular hair, my experiences have been jarring. As a consumer, I want to know that the brand I’m buying from is a brand that actually cares about me and not just about the money they’re making. So, in 2014, I decided to design my own wigs and clip-ins with a contact in China that I found on a hair forum. Big Hair No Care launched in 2017, but we quickly had to pause it.
FUN FREDDIE FACTS
“After doing pop-ups in London, Paris and NYC, spending years building an online community around my musings as a misfit and hosting confidence workshops for the similarly anxietyridden and not-good-enough women around me, I had created way more than a hair brand - it was a movement. But it needed back-up, so we raised $2m from an all-female group of kickass investors. Hair is always going to sell, so to me it’s almost indecent to just leave it as that.
1. French Cameroonian Freddie has lived in London for nearly a decade. 2. She started her career as a digital strategist working for ASOS, Vestiaire Collective and Topshop. 3. Her YouTube interview Before I Am Woman, Before I Am Black, I Am Freddie Harrel has received over 222k views. 4. Her favourite fragrance is Parisienne by YSL.
“Black hair is culture; it’s always been the safest and boldest form of self-expression we’ve resorted to. It’s sisterhood, it’s therapy and it’s community.”
5. Freddie’s hair company Big Hair No Care has recently rebranded as RadSwan.

Hair oiling is a traditional method that has historical roots in India as well as throughout Africa and the Diaspora. The image of a black mother applying oil or grease to her daughter’s scalp is an enduring one. Harnessing the healing properties of natural oil by applying it to the hair and scalp is proven to prevent dryness and breakage. And this timeless ritual continues to be very effective for most types of afro textured hair.
During these times of heightened stress and anxiety as we all try to function as best as we can amid the pandemic, a scalp massage using therapeutic oils is also a great way to practice some self care. So from new launches hitting the shelves to some cult favourites, here’s our pick of top oils for your arsenal that have been designed to fix hair concerns of every kind while revitalising the scalp and calming the mind...

Summer seems like a lifetime ago. And as we embrace autumn and all the seasonal changes that come along with it, it’s imperative that we adapt our haircare routine too. Common hair concerns during the cooler months tend to be dryness and brittleness. But fear not: incorporating hair oil into your regime can rescue weather-worn tresses. In fact, it’s a tried and tested approach for maintaining moisture and healthy hair.
DEEP TREATMENTS
SCALP CARE
Whether you’re pre-pooing (using a treatment prior to washing your hair) or applying oil as part of your post-shampoo regime, deep treatments are great for reducing damage and dryness. Whatever your hair’s porosity, Wow Oils Extra Virgin Oil (£7.99) works wonders at replenishing weather-worn strands. For a deep conditioning pre poo treatment, try Leonor Greyl L’Huile L’Huile De Leonor Greyl (£29.60) and Olaplex No.7 Bond Oil (£26) that can be used without heat or steaming.
Specially formulated scalp oils like ORS Saw Palmetto Oil (£5.66) or Afrocenchix Lightweight Scalp Oil (£15.99) are great for this time of year. Indulging in a five minute massage will open up the pores, reinvigorating the scalp and alleviating tightness – a common symptom of dryness. The pipette on Affirm Progrowth Oil (salon-only) is useful for sectioning and applying the oil directly. Massage in a circular motion using the tips of your fingers, allowing the oil to penetrate the scalp.
BLOW-DRYING
L.O.C METHOD
When preparing your hair for a blow-dry, oil-based heat protectors are great for shielding the hair from thermal damage. Opt for lightweight misting sprays such as KeraCare Thermal Wonder 6 in 1 Protector (£9.50) or Design Essentials Coconut & Monoi Oil (£11.48), which pack a serious hydration punch with only a small amount of product required. Alternatively, if you’re air drying or want something a little heavier, reach for a cocktail mix like Ojon’s Rare Blend Oil (£12) for a moisture hit.
The L.O.C method consists of layering the hair with a liquid, oil and cream to prevent moisture loss. The oil acts as sealant, smoothing down the cuticle to reduce split ends while restoring the natural lustre of the hair. Multi-blend formulas like Herbal Essences Hair Oil Blend (£2.97) and Ouidad Mongongo Oil (£38) double up as a leavein conditioner and finisher. Meanwhile, Aveda Dry Remedy Oil (£22) has a spa-like scent that will leave you feeling relaxed in no time.

Get the lowdown on Insta’s new feature (and who’s worth watching)
Just when you’ve got the hang of IGTV and Stories, in comes a new sharing feature on Instagram to get busy perfecting. Having launched a couple of months ago, you can’t have missed all the slick and snappy clips of outfit changes and make-up transformations which Reels is so good at showcasing. Also, Insta’s algorithm is all about promoting Reels right now, so there’s a good reason to jump on board ASAP. Many of you might already be happily in the swing of creating your own epic Reels. But if you’re still on the fence, here’s everything you need to know…
What’s the quick lowdown? Reels has been dubbed Instagram’s version of TikTok. It comes at a time when the Chinese app has been under threat of removal by some countries. Essentially, Reels is a way to record 15-30 second clips to Instagram’s music library and you can edit the video within the app, adding augmented reality filters, timers, captions, hashtags and more. You can check out all the Reels in the Reels Explore Page covering everything from beauty transformations to dance offs. There’s also now a tab on your profile for any uploaded clips.
BRILLIANT BEAUTY REELS TO FOLLOW AHLIYAH MICHELLE If her captivating head wraps weren’t enough to lure you to her Instagram page, then Ahliyah Michelle’s Reels are guaranteed to get you pressing play and subscribe. Expect insane graphics, smooth voice overs and finished beauty looks that are banging. Oh and there’s some great haircare tricks thrown in too.
AALIA COSMETICS As the queen of beauty transformations, Aalia’s work was just made for Reels. There’s plenty to dig into on the London-based make-up artist’s Reels page (as well as her IGTVs too, btw). And there’s no way you won’t be inspired by her colourful creations and cool selection of music picks.
AKESHA REID She’s a dab hand at creating IGTVs that bring a unique fun vibe to hair and beauty. And now, Akesha’s taking her talents to Reels. As a leading beauty journalist, she’s brimming with knowledge about the latest launches and trends while her videos are a playful reflection of her infectious personality.

The gym definitely has its benefits, but you could also consider home or outdoor training to meet the same health goals while saving a bit of cash. Feeling physically and mentally stronger will help spur you on to keep on the right track.

Newly published statistics show that 50 per cent of new gym goers cancel their membership within six months while others admit paying for a gym membership they rarely use. If you want to stay on top of your fitness goals but lack the motivation, here are some tips to whip you into shape!
PICK A SKILL YOU’RE GOOD AT
The fastest way to fall off any fitness programme is by choosing activities you don’t like. If the thought of burpees or an armystyle bootcamp with a drill sergeant shouting in your ears fills you with dread, then don’t sign up. Choose an exercise or skill you want to become good at and dedicate your time to that. Seeing improvements is motivation in itself, especially when it’s something you never thought you’d be able to achieve. Not sure where to start? Write down a list of what you enjoy and over the coming weeks work your way through. After all, you might just surprise yourself.
FIND A WORKOUT BUDDY
Having someone to go to the gym with makes it much easier to stay on track. You can motivate one another by working out in pairs and partaking in some friendly competition. Challenging yourself is a healthy way to attain goals - you’d hate to be seen as the one who could only do three reps when your friend can do four. But whatever you do, don’t turn it into a ‘frenemy’ situation. If you can’t find a workout partner, put it out there on social media or an online fitness forum. This could be a great opportunity to network and build new lasting friendships.
MAKE THE INVESTMENT

Signing up with a personal trainer (PT) is an expensive option, but ultimately you will reap the rewards and save money in the long run. A PT will help you understand how to meet your goals, map out planned exercises and assess your technique to make sure you’re exercising correctly. This is an important stage that is often overlooked and can lead to back, shoulder or knee strains developing over time from incorrect movement. PT sessions range from £30£80 depending on location and experience. However, some gyms also offer a trial session - so keep an eye out for those.

CREATE A PLAN It’s important not to overwhelm yourself by creating a gruelling training regime – something we’ve all most likely been guilty of. Unachievable goals are the quickest way to dampen your motivation and call it quits. If Friday evenings are usually a girls’ night out, then plan your training around the days and evenings you know you’ll be engaged. If you know you can only manage two sessions a week, then plan for two and a home session later on in the week. Remember, not only is consistency key, your fitness journey should be enjoyable and work for you on all occassions. SPELL
