Utilising precious knowledge to create beauty innovations

"

For most of my career, I had been promoting other people’s products - whether it was on a make-up counter or teaching other make-up artists. But during that time, I also made my own skincare products at home, so I already had the skills and the knowledge. It was the encouragement from my friends and other make-up artists that pushed me to launch my own brand.

I started my career as a make-up artist, but I took a break and trained as an aromatherapist as a way to work while being a single mum. When I went back to make-up artistry, I didn’t want to waste the knowledge of aromatherapy and holistic therapy that I had gained. Essential oils have physical and

emotional benefits, so that’s why I wanted to include them in my Make-up Brush & Sponge Cleansing Soap. It's made with a base of coconut oil infused with may chang and tea tree essential oils. A lot of my customers are fellow beauty professionals, but then there are a few enthusiasts – people who like make-up and who follow artists who may be using the product. What I’ve found is that the average make-up wearer doesn’t clean their brushes as often as they should, or at all. So, when they see an artist cleaning their brushes, they might purchase the product and do the same. I’ve been working a lot on my product and i can't wait for everyone to see the new launches.

A recent study has found that a fifth of Brits have had their self-esteem knocked after being looked down on by a stranger. The research, commissioned by Skin Proud, also found that 53 per cent wished they felt more confident in their natural skin. Nora Zukauskaite, global head of marketing at Skin Proud, says: “With social media opening the world up, perfect strangers’ with seemingly perfect physiques are now adding to a general feeling of not being good enough. URBAN TWIST - PASSION TWIST Model is wearing length 18 inches colour T1B/27. Head over to Spellbeauty.com to shop the look

If you ask us, crochet hair is like a gift from the beauty gods. Convenient and purse-friendly, these extensions are also super fast to install in comparison to other methods and protective styles. For the uninitiated, application is achieved as follows: pre-styled extensions are sewn into cornrowed hair with a crochet needle - creating a brand new popping style in no time. A routine visit to any beauty supplier or online store will present a minefield of choice, so it can be difficult to know where to start. If you’re a crochet newbie or just want to know how to make an informed choice when selecting protective style extensions, read on for our comprehensive guide to buying crochet hair...

3. How long do you want to wear your extensions? Another benefit of crochet hair is that the results can last for pretty much the same time as individually installed styles such as braids and double-stranded twists - and still look immaculately fresh. One of our favourite hacks is to install a crochet style such as long double-stranded twists and unravel them after two to three weeks. You can then wear the hair loosely so it resembles a big curly

Box Braids @Kiitana

Afro. But if style longevity is your thing and you like to switch up your look, opt for crochet extensions that allow for this kind of flexibility. 4. Size matters (and that includes length, too) Crochet hair extensions are available in a mind-blowing range of style options. From pencil thin twists and jumbo double-twisted options to short coily braids – the choices are limitless. And although it may not seem like an important consideration, we definitely recommend taking a moment to think about length and volume as this will impact your finished look. For instance, jumbo braids add a lot of volume so if you’re not a fan of big statement-making hair it may feel a bit overwhelming. Likewise, if you’re after a short bob there’s no need to buy 18 inches of hair extensions as most of it will be cut off during the styling process. We suggest creating a mood board of your favourite looks prior to purchasing your extensions so you can achieve your desired style with ease. 5. It’s all in the finish Lastly, take the time to consider what finished look and texture you’d like when wearing crochet hair. The double-twisted styles are the trend of the moment and tend to be available in a silky smooth finish, as well as, a more rugged texture that gives the hair a more natural, worn-in look. But your choices don't stop at double stranded twists: you can also opt for faux locs or box braids that mimic the look of individually installed braids. You can also replicate natural textured styles like a kinky 'fro or blown out 4c curls using hair made of quality Syn Kanekalon Fibre. The options are truly limitless when it comes to crochet. SPELL

2. How many packs do you need for a full head? There’s nothing worse than getting to the middle of a fresh install to find you don't have enough hair: #BigFail! Our crochet extensions philosophy is that it’s better to have extra hair left over that you can use for quick touch-ups than have to make a rapid trip midapplication to your local beauty supply store. In terms of how much hair you should purchase, it’s all dependent on the thickness of your natural hair and the style you wish to achieve. However, we’d suggest buying around seven to eight packs for a crochet protective style, roughly speaking.

Now you've got the know-how it's time to glow now.

1. Human or synthetic hair? The first thing you will need to decide is whether to purchase human or synthetic crochet extensions. Human hair tends to be more expensive for obvious reasons and, due to its smoother texture, it can be a bit trickier to install. Synthetic crochet extensions are a more popular choice as they are cost effective, varied in style and shade, and tend to have a secure grip on the hair during the installation process. Shop for prelooped and pre-twisted or braided hair for easier installation and to cut down on style time.

IS YOUR SKINCARE MAKING YOU BREAKOUT? SPELL

Primark

From stress and diet to periods and beauty products, breakouts can occur for many reasons. Thankfully, you can eliminate the latter by switching to non-comedogenic skincare, specifically designed to keep skin balanced and beautiful 10

MAGAZINE

Non-comedogenic skincare refers to products that don't contain pore-blocking ingredients. Seems like a no-brainer, right? Nobody buys skincare with the intention of breaking out. But unless you know what these ingredients are, you could be harming the condition of your skin without knowing the cause. So, if you feel like you've tried everything and still have bumpy skin and blackheads, it's probably time to make the switch to non-comedogenic skincare. Here's everything you need to know...

The comedogenicity scale The phrase ‘non-comedogenic’ comes from the word ‘comedo’, which refers to a blocked pore. Comedones can manifest as blackheads or whiteheads and occur with or without acne. Non-comedogenic skincare helps to prevent the production of comedones by avoiding ingredients that are known to cause them. Researchers know which ingredients cause comedones through testing; they give each a rating on a scale from zero to five. A score of zero means that the ingredient is unlikely to cause comedones, while a score of five means that the ingredient has a very high chance of being comedogenic. Everybody’s skin is different, which means that there’s no guarantee that non-comedogenic ingredients won’t cause breakouts. However, if you’re prone to bumpy skin there’s a possibility that switching to this type of skincare will lead to positive results. Make the break to flawless skin It's essential for anyone with spot prone skin to avoid these heavier ingredients, instead focusing on a non-comedogenic skincare routine that will treat your concerns without causing blocked pores and breakouts. So, where do you start? This concept might be new to many people, but the beauty industry moves quickly. Many brands will have either launched new products with the words ‘noncomedogenic’ or ‘non-acnegenic’ marked on the packaging, or re-released products were already non-comedogenic with new clearer labelling. But remember, just like some of our favourite junk foods that happen to be vegan (Oreos, Biscoff spread and BBQ Pringles), just because the bottle doesn’t state the product is non-comedogenic doesn’t necessarily mean that it isn't. You can get a better idea of what to avoid by asking in-store or checking the ingredients list out for yourself.

THE FACTS ABOUT ADULT ACNE Caused by bacteria Adult acne is acne found in anyone over the age of 18 and is caused by bacteria that builds up in the skin.

Dr Ifeoma Ejikeme, medical director at West London's Adonia Medical Clinic, lays down the facts you need to know about adult acne

or menopause. Genetics play a part Some people will have a genetic predisposition that is more likely to create an environment in which the bacteria of acne will be happy to grow and appear on the skin's surface.

It's more common than teenage acne Adult acne can happen to anyone at any point in time. For some, it can be triggered by using a product with poreclogging ingredients or if they are going through pregnancy

that grows in the thickness of the skin. However, for that bacteria to turn into acne, it must spark an inflammation. This inflammation is the body's response to the presence of the bacteria. It sends cells to get rid of the bacteria, which causes the skin to become inflamed with redness, pain and puss. For this reason, the inflammation as well as the bacteria must be addressed.

FROM BREAKING BAD TO BREAKING GOOD: NONCOMEDOGENIC SKIN HEROES Generally, non-comedogenic products will be water-based and oil-free, so typically natural cleansers, lightweight creams and serums will be your go-to for everyday skincare. Work in a toner to balance the skin's pH levels and avoid anything that feels over-drying or gives the skin an uncomfortable tightness. It's also worth investing in a purifying face mask which can be used once a week. Search for detoxing ingredients like charcoal which will draw out deep dwelling impurities. Finally, every skincare routine requires a SPF. Yes, some can be overbearing on the skin and cause pores to be blocked quickly, but mineral sunscreens are less likely to exacerbate acne. Without further ado, here are some noncomedogenic approved heroes that you can add to your routine to replenish your skin without clogging the pores.

My first Instagram Reel – I was removing my braids and thought why not have fun with it. I definitely plan to do more now I've had a taste. Who’s your hair crush? Anyone with healthy hair to be honest, but the first person that comes to mind is Cipriana Quann. Her waist-length 4c curls are some serious hair goals!

In your opinion what makes good social media content? I love content that inspires me to create or become my best self. It's all about having fun and not taking social media too seriously. What hair and beauty product do you wish you could invent? For hair I would create a product that makes wash-day take less than one hour. When it comes to beauty, I need a product that takes off my make-up and leaves it feeling like I've just done a sheet mask. Go-to hairstyle? Protective styling is everything! But I’m rethinking my big chop again.

What’s your go-to protective style? I'm at a stage where I'm discovering so many different fun ways to rock protective styles. I love crochet because it's not too damaging on my natural hair. What's your curl-saving item? Conditioner. It's my go-to for detangling, moisturising and even making a spritz. A good conditioner with good slip is a multi-use product. What’s the longest hairstyle you’ve sat in the salon chair for? Knotless box braids! I had to blow-dry my hair first and, whew, that took a while. Then I had to have the braids done which were quite small.

Trina

Instagram: @CurltureUK Full name : Trina Charles Age: 28

Why do you love crochet styles? It saves so much time and is super easy to install. You still get the same bomb look and protection of your natural hair. What product would you take to a desert island? A moisturising deep conditioner. My hair feels so revitalised and soft after using it and I can't imagine not having it on wash-day. Any hair dramas you can share? When I had faux locs installed I was in the chair for hours and almost missed the last train home. I had no idea of the wrapping technique involved, but nevertheless loved the end result.

The best podcasts on work

Plug into these conversations and let these excellent women navigate you through the messy world of work.

by brilliant Black women

Podcasts are getting diverse, finally. More than ever, we’re seeing brilliant Black women taking to our airwaves and talking about issues affecting them, whether that’s dating via Zoom and parenting in a pandemic, to the best books by Black authors or need-to-know beauty advice. For the career-minded, we’re constantly turning to a number of incredible and inspirational women to lean on for regular audio advice. These Black women are breaking ground with their take on modern working life, entrepreneurship, getting that pay rise or sticking it to your dodgy boss – all through excellent weekly episode drops. These are the wise women we are here for…

IN GOOD COMPANY

SLAY IN YOUR LANE

Host: Otegha Uwagba Average episode length: approx. 1 hour

Host: Nicaila Matthews Okome Average episode length: 1 hour

Hosts: Yomi Adegoke and Elizabeth Uviebinené Average episode length: 30 minutes

For those among us who are committed fans of Women Who, a network and accompanying newsletter called The Roundup designed for working women, you’ll already know and love Otegha Uwagba. In Good Company is an extension of the brand where she talks to other successful women who are carving out their own career paths. If you’re interested in the beauty industry and wondering how one of the few Black editors managed to rise to the top, then tune in to her chat with Fenmi Futto. Wondering how to negotiate that pay rise? Take some tips from her insightful convo with publishing queen Sharmaine Lovegrove who’s behind Dialogue Books and one of the best voices around on diversifying our bookshelves.

As a former digital marketer for NPR in the US by day, Nicaila was a self confessed side hustler by night. She took a gutsy leap and quit her nine to five job in 2017 to go full-time with Side Hustle Pro, a podcast she dubs as the first and only podcast to cast the spotlight on bold Black women entrepreneurs who have ‘scaled from side hustle to profitable business’. There’s so much great content to dig into here: listen to Monique Rodriguez reveal how she took her organic beauty brand Mielle Organics from her garage to the most glamorous retail shelves, and find out how Brittani Allen built her professional home organisation business from scratch. Marie Kondo eat your heart out.

Relatively new to the podcasting scene come the award-winning authors behind the guide Slay in your Lane: The Black Girl Bible. With the same title and same brilliant ethos, each episode explores topical news and pop culture from a young Black British female perspective, while also expanding on the issues tackled in the book including navigating the workplace and keeping your finances in check. If you’re a budding writer, then this will resonate with you even more. The dynamic duo dedicates entire episodes to how they wrote their best-seller featuring commentary from dozens of successful Black women – from putting together a stand out proposal for publishers to how they first got inspired to put pen to paper.

If you’re not familiar with the name, Jennifer Covington-Bowers is a New York-based hairstylist who first came on my radar when she partnered with the brand Hairstory, best known for its detergent-free alternative to shampoo. Via a private Zoom meeting set up for journos last month, I got to see Jennifer in her element where she gave some A-star hair advice during her Curl Collective Masterclass. Keen to find out more about her experiences as one of the industry's leading all-round hairstylists, I scheduled a one-to-one chat for the full lowdown. Jemima (JC): Hey Jen, hope you can see me OK? I’m pretty new to Zoom. Jennifer (JCB): I can see you crystal clear hun. What special times we live in. JC: Do you feel that travelling for work will ever be the same after COVID-19? JCB: I don’t think it will ever be the exact same and it feels like the new enforced health and safety measures pre and post travelling are the new normal. I can’t wait to be allowed to travel internationally again. JC: What was your first photo shoot after lockdown like? JCB: In the US we experienced different degrees of lockdown depending on the state. So for instance, I had the chance to assist for a celebrity client. This meant taking an express COVID-19 test before I could

be cleared for the set and there were naturally a lot of sanitation guidelines. But once I started working, I realised how much I’d missed it. JC: You have a very varied portfolio from European hair to Afro hair, men’s grooming and wigs. As a black stylist, do you feel that there are preconceptions about the kind of hair that you work with? JCB: Most definitely! I had the huge opportunity to work on the Chanel 2020 haute couture fittings and shows under French hairstylist Damien Boissinot. I was one of just two black hairstylists at the atelier and during the show, one non-black stylist commented; “Oh, you took my spot because they had to have a black person for the black models”. Even though I’m trained and experienced in working with all hair textures, it’s assumed that black hairstylists are only around for afro hair. The reality is that the majority black stylists – myself included – have worked even harder to perfect our skill level on all hair textures. JC: So, do you feel like having black stylists on a job is reassuring to black models? JCB: Yes. I remember my first time working at a show in Paris. The black Parisian models told me that having a hairstylist of colour was a rarity. They were so happy and relieved I was there because they knew I’d bring products that work for all hair textures. A bit of home from home. JC: Speaking of texture, how often

should natural hair be washed and conditioned? JCB: Wash weekly with Hairstory’s New Wash (Rich) and then, if desired, every two weeks with New Wash (Deep). This is formulated with apple cider vinegar and argan oil for a deeper cleanse that won't strip the hair of moisture. JC: Besides hair, what are your passions? JCB: I love interior design and this passion has only grown since I've been spending more time at home. I’ve managed to complete a lot of interiors projects including refreshing the décor. My husband is never quite sure if he’s walked into the right apartment! JC: I know what you mean. I change my hair so much my partner doesn’t know who he’ll be meeting next week.
