Your best choice in Scandinavia ALMOST 30 YEARS AGO, Best Western Hotels started up in Scandinavia. Up until now each country has had its own organisation separated from each other. Now we have consolidated and started a new company together, Best Western Scandinavia, in which we have grouped all our Scandinavian activities. This means that we will have over 130 hotels in the four countries – Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland. The reason for this is that we can develop, grow faster and be more effective. We co-ordinate our products and offers so they become Scandinavian and are valid in all our countries. One example is Where to go, the magazine you are reading which has been published in Sweden since 2009. In this issue you can read about our new Soft Brand concept – BW Premier Collection. This means that hotels not bearing the Best Western name are also a part of all our programmes and booking channels. We are extra proud that the world’s first BW Premier Collection Hotel is Scandinavian as the well-known and popular Hotel Mäster Johan in Malmö became a partner. I hope you will find some interesting reading in our magazine when you stay with us! Johan Kukacka, CEO johan@bestwestern.se

Hasselblad has taken a Sony RX100 II and given it a luxurious makeover. The grip comes in a number of finishes including carbon fiber and six exotic woods. Other changes have been made to the menu system making it more exclusive, though the question is whether the changes motivate the doubling in price for the Stellar II, which retails at circa E1,700.
Devialet of France present their first all-inone amplifier and speaker under the name Phantom. The sides of the elliptical speaker move in and out as bass is produced and it is set to challenge the traditional speaker market. There are two versions, a 700 watt and a powerful 3000 watt! Price from E1,800.
The Beyerdynamic DTX 350 weighs just 131 grams despite the big soft leatherette ear-pads. Another practical detail is that the headphones fold up to fit inside a small pouch. For circa E50 it can be worth the investment if you're tired of the in-ear headphones which accompany most mobile devices.

Iceland
The natural baths in Mývatn with the mystical Northern Lights as a backdrop.
If you take an Icelandic horse away from the island, it is never allowed back. The reason for that is to keep the breed pure and free of disease, something they have been successful in doing for almost a thousand years. Besides the many Icelandic horses all across the region, northern Iceland is also made for adventure. Ours starts in Akureyri surrounded by an ice blue, deep light I have never seen anywhere else. A light snow is falling when we leave in the morning, and it seems the sky is lighter by the horizon. “Take nothing for granted”, says Halldór Óli Kjartansson of Visit North Iceland. “The only thing you can be sure of on Iceland is that you don’t know which weather you will get in the next five minutes.” The snow is flying around the car as we drive east towards Mývatn (Mosquito Lake). An American investor once suggested changing the name to Aurora Lake to make it more attractive. But here things are called what they are, so Mosquito Lake it is. The snow gets heavier and our snowmobile tour is cancelled. Instead we decide to take a walk on snowshoes to Dimmu borgir (the Dark Castles). This is a large protected area of unusually shaped lava fields, which according to
local legend are trolls turned to stone. We tie on our snowshoes and glide effortlessly on top of the snow-covered landscape. With a little fantasy you can see faces in the stone pillars and you understand the origin of the Icelandic stories. Parts of the film Brothers Lionheart were recorded around Dimmu borgir, as were the winter scenes in the popular TV series Game of Thrones. The natural baths in Mývatn are warmed up by steam from the earth’s interior, keeping it at just over 38°C. The water in the clear blue lagoon in the middle of the lava landscape is incredibly soft, like having a bath in fabric softener and is known to be fantastic for the skin. By afternoon we most unwillingly drag ourselves out of the water and drive towards the western shores of Eyafjordur, to the micro brewery Kaldi. Unlike snaps, beer was forbidden on Iceland until 1989 because the authorities were worried that the cheaper beer would lead to increased drinking and deprivation. Since beer has been legalised, it has become the most popular alcoholic drink and many micro breweries have been established on the island. Today ten percent of the people in the village

Iceland work at Kaldi. The brewery offers guided tours and tasting straight from the tank. Andreas Baumgartner from Switzerland holds yoga classes and arranges outdoor activities in Akureyri. “It is a little different to experience all of natures elements and combine them with personal well-being”, he says. “Here you do not meet many other tourists, so every experience feels unique.” Andreas takes us on a dog sledding tour to search for the Northern Lights one evening. I have not read up about this properly and assume I will sit in a cosy sled between warm furs, but boy, was I wrong. I get a thin wooden kick sled pulled by three fluffy charming Alaskan huskys. Without further ado I just get up and get on with it. With a “Go, go, go!” I can make the dogs run in the deep snow so it feels like we are flying. The Northern Lights are nowhere to be seen, but the flying sensation through the darkness is adventure enough. With us on the dog sled tour are Michael and Dave from Manchester, travelling with a group of friends. “Some of us wanted to go skiing, whilst others wanted to try some very different winter activities. Then North Iceland became an exciting choice”, said Michael.
» I can eat a whole can on my own in front of a good movie.« 16 WHERE TO GO 01.15
In Hauganes, some 20 miles north of Akureyri you can try the Icelandic national dish of rotten shark. The recipe is simple: Take a Greenland shark, dig a hole and bury it in your backyard for six weeks, then hang it in a cold place for a few months after that. When ready cut in to cubes and serve with snaps. Elvar Reykjalin is a fourth generation fishmonger at Ekta Fiskur. We visit him one early morning. “I can eat a whole can on my own in front of a good movie”, says Elvar and pass around little white cubes of shark on cocktail sticks together with homemade raspberry snaps. The strong smell of ammonia and old fish is off-putting, and the snaps I first declined, went down quickly, in order to get rid of the taste in my mouth. No, rotten shark is not my cup of tea. Siglufjordúr by the Atlantic coast houses one of Iceland’s finest museums, the Herring Era Museum. Here stories are told about the rise and fall of the village as Europe’s herring capital at the start of the last century. Hundreds of young people came on boats to the remote village in the north to fish, clean and pack the herring in to barrels. The museum once again attracts visitors to the village together with the skiing
facilities nearby where you can ski with an ocean view. Here are some of Iceland’s best ski slopes with over two kilometres of skiing from the top lift down to the fjord. We enjoy the luxury of being almost alone on the slopes, and we ski until the lights are turned on. Iceland has so much to offer. The Northern Lights we never saw, as well as the cancelled snowmobile tour, have given me a reason to come back to the island of fairytales and adventures. I am glad I am not an Icelandic horse.

Culture What is Swedish and Swedishness? Look in my direction, a new exhibition at Gothenburg’s Natural History Museum opens 28 February. Photographer Klas Sjöberg has taken portraits of people who live in Sweden, but have grown up in another country. Sjöberg asked them to meet him dressed how they want – a method to come nearer their personality. What is Swedish and Swedishness? Never before has the subject been as hot as it is right now. Until 30 August.
A trip through Carlsbergs history
Art in the darkroom
Finnish-Norwegian art combination The Magical North exhibition presents a dialogue between Norwegian and Finnish art from the start of the last century. An interesting combination in the light of both the political and cultural parallels in the two countries. Nordic mythology, human beings vulnerability and the fascination for untouched nature are the basis for the exhibition which shows highlights from both Helsinki’s Ateneum and Oslo’s Nasjonalmuséets collections. Until 16 May at the Nasjonalmuséet.
Ewa Stackelberg’s personal universe emerges in the darkroom. Employing light, chemicals and objects, but no camera, she creates images imprinted by real life experiences. The ‘Fotogram’ exhibition is a restrained yet colourful encounter between stage designer Ulla Cassius’ distinct spaces and Ewa Stackelberg’s photograms. Together they have created a meditative total experience that is open for your own interpretation. Showing at the Fotografiska Museum in Stockholm until 5 April.
At Visit Carlsberg you can visit an active brewery and meet the proud horses as they get ready for their daily trip through the streets of Copenhagen. The stables are open and popular among both adults and children. A tour of the brewery explains a fascinating story of how Carlsberg successfully went from a local brewery founded by J.C. Jacobsen in 1847, to today’s global brand. Tasting the beer is of course part of your tour. Try one of the seasonal lagers or test beers planned for release. Open all year round.
Chekhov classic at Oslo’s Riksteatret An old Russian proverb goes: A cutlet is always larger on your neighbours’ plate. Something we can all sympathise with. Meet the three sisters Olga, Maria and Irina. They live in a Russian provincial town together with their brother, Andrej, dreaming of escaping to Moscow, where they grew up. Director Hanne Tømta creates an environment where the barrier between stage and audience dissolves. The events could have gone on for 100 years ago or 50 years ago, or even today. They portray primarily a state - regardless of time and place. Premier at Riksteatret, Oslo, 8 April. 01.15 WHERE TO GO 21
Culture Gripping exhibition at Louisiana Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is organising the first major exhibition in Scandinavia of the German painter Paula Modersohn-Becker, the first female artist to have her own museum. She died just 31 years old and sold only three paintings in her short career, though is now recognised as one of the most important German artists in history. Carmen now as a ballet Georges Bizet’s soulful Carmen is one of the most frequently performed operas in the world, but the story of the female seducer is also a ballet. The Norwegian National Ballet now has its own version, created by Liam Scarlett, who brought us the sparkling Firebird and beautiful Vespertine in autumn 2013. The young British choreographer has demonstrated a unique ability to beguile the audience, and the ballets he has previously created for the Norwegian National Ballet have been greeted with acclaim. Carmen is his first evening-length ballet with a full orchestra, and will be a full-format, classic storytelling performance. From 19 March until 23 April.

Yes, you could have the central avenue as a landmark for finding your way around, and the nearby streets are far from uninteresting. There are plenty of restaurants and cafés, for example Palmen, Anden Etage, Teaterkaféet and Café Christiania to name a few. But there are so many other interesting areas to explore. Continue up and past Slottsparken and end up in the part of Oslo called Majorstuen. Here you can feel the city's pulse, especially on Bogstadsvejen, recently finished after three years of renovation. Around this area, shoppers will find retail chains, niche boutiques, exclusive shops and something for those on a budget.

Grünerløkka, is an old working class neighbourhood now hip and trendy for the arty and creatives of Oslo. One of the most famous Norwegian artists, Edvard Munch moved here, to No. 48 Thorvald Meyers Street in 1875 and the street is still one of the liveliest in the area. Here you will find a mix of old and new, cafés, micro breweries and exciting restaurants. So if you want to get away from the chain stores and retail outlets found in every other city, this is where you should head. Vulkan is another expanding part of the same area and in the old industrial buildings you will find dance studios, art schools and an

The opera house, a hit amongst Oslo residents, together with Tjuvholmen and Aker Brygge, provide the marine element of the city. The most famous building on Tjuvholmen is perhaps the eye-catching new Astrup Fearnley Museum and there are many restaurants and even a small beach on the sea side, which makes this a natural meeting place in summer. NORDIC RUNNING Exercising during your holiday can give you new motivation as well as new experiences. And running is one of the best and most popular ways to discover a new place when travelling. Text: Thomas RĂśdin
28 WHERE TO GO 01.15
Interest in running as a way of keeping fit has exploded in recent years. Many people like to combine pleasure with exercise when considering holidays abroad, by choosing to participate in a race through a city or even a marathon. We decided to take a closer look at some of the bigger cities in the Nordic countries, and what they can offer when it comes to running and races. Reykjavik Iceland has beautiful countryside scenery with high mountains (volcanoes) and vast, green highlands devoid of buildings. If you are looking for solitude, this is the place. Start your running tour in the harbour and continue west, along the Seltjamarnes peninsula. Follow the waterline as far as you want to the south, maybe rounding the domestic airport before heading back to the city. Every year Reykjavik arranges their own marathon, 10 km and relay race. This year’s races take place in August and are expected to attract 13,500 entrants.
Running Eremitageløbet
Copenhagen The Scandinavian city most visited by foreign tourists. The atmosphere is both international and continental yet Scandinavian. The Little Mermaid is a national symbol of Denmark and its most famous tourist attraction. Check out Ströget, considered to be the world’s oldest pedestrian street, and a visit to the sanctuary of Christiania is also a must.Your run could start at Hovedbanegården, towards the Vor Frelsers Kirke (church with the twisted golden spear) and then across Langebro. Follow the gravel paths around the old military buildings by the canal, and continue along to the harbour – Christianshavn then further out to Holmen. A highlight in the running calendar is the hilly13,3 km Eremitageløbet in October - a combined city and terrain race. Helsinki The city of Helsinki offers most of its sights and attractions on foot. It is easy to get around on your own walking, or by bus and tram. If you want to discover more, get out to the Olympic Stadium in the district of Tölö. There you can walk around in the lovely central park around Tölöviken. Or why not take a run past the fishmongers at Salutorget, the maple trees in Brunnspark and the dark blue water of Hietsun. Two races to look out for are the Helsinki City Run in May and the Midnight Run in August. Helsinki City Run
Reykjavik Marathon
Bergen Norway’s second city, with it’s dramatic location between the steep mountains and colourful history, is a must for all visitors. Bergen is also a great place for runners. You’ll find Stoltzekleiven, a steep walking path with 908 steps, rising over 315 metres which holds the annual Stoltzekleiven Opp – the world’s steepest race attracting more than 2,000 participants. Do not miss Fjellveien (the mountain road) that clings to the mountain sides around Bergen - a great place to jog or walk and enjoy the unbeatable view. Bergen also arranges their own marathon in April. Malmö Not only is the population of Malmö growing, so is the city. Beautiful Västra Hamnen (harbour) is a wonderful patchwork of different architectural styles, and a role model in ecological building methods. The second highest building in Sweden, the Turning Torso designed by architect Santiago Calatravas is just one example of the multitude you will find there. Runners too have plenty of options. Why not take a tour by Pildammarna down to Kungsparken, then continue along Hälsans Stig alongside the sea by Ribersborg. Two races not to be missed are the Toughest obstacle race in May and the Malmö Half Marathon in October.

The first title holder was Athens, though nowadays it is can be more than two cities who share the honour. For 2015 that means Mons in Belgium and Plzén in the Czech Republic. The title usually means an increase in visitors to cultural activities such as opera, museums and the theatre.

THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE Text: Tomas Rรถdin
32 WHERE TO GO 01.15
Vasaloppet Over the last few years, cross country skiing has had something of a revival. This year’s World Cup is held in Falun, further increasing the sports popularity in Sweden. The 90 km Vasaloppet though is the ultimate challenge and the 15,800 places for this year's race sold out in just a couple of minutes. Vasaloppet, has over the years become more than just a cross country race. It has developed in to a real festival with around 50,000 people coming every year to participate in various races during the week in the run-up to the main event. (Open Track, Short Track, ladies race and the 90 km Vasaloppet). Vasaloppet is the World’s oldest, longest and biggest cross country skiing race and was run for the first time in 1922. What people usually do not know is that Vasaloppet is an non-profit activity owned by the sports clubs IFK Mora and Sälens IF. To make the race happen, they take help from another 3,117 people from different clubs and sports associations in the region. The money they receive goes straight to the workers’ own clubs and is used to finance their own child, youth and top level activities. So what is it like to complete Vasaloppet, and how do you prepare for a 90 kilometre race between Sälen and Mora? We asked two real experts: Daniel Tynell and Oskar Svärd. Both have three victories to their name and hope to win this year’s event.
Name: Daniel Tynell Age: 39 years Club: Team Tynell Merits: 3 victories and 3 second places in Vasaloppet.
group behind. It helps if you know the skiers, then you can keep an eye on who is going and who is staying behind and who can perhaps help you to catch up again.”
How often should you eat and drink during the race? “As an elite skier you never drink at the ordinary stations, we have our own drinks placed out at pre-determined places along the course. A good bit of advice is to have someone ready with your own drink along the course or have a bottle belt that you can fill at the drink stations. The trick is to have a continuous intake of fluids every 15 – 20 minutes. You can never ‘catch up’ if you miss some liquid intake, or if you are not careful with the consumption of fluid at the start of the race.”
What are your expectations for this years race? “Of course I will go for victory. I have had a good pre-season training when my brother Rikard and I were at a training camp at Mallorca together with the Aukland brothers. It was a pretty brutal and intensive camp with lots of strength workouts. Last year was my most even year in the long distance cup with almost only top ten finishes, and a seventh place in Vasaloppet.”
Have you got any special tactics for how you approach your race? “I usually try to hang on to the front group and I don’t mind taking my turn at the very front setting the pace and checking out the other leaders. In some races there is an early breakaway and then you need to make a decision whether to go with them or stay in the
Is there ever a chance for you to enjoy the beautiful surroundings during a race? “During the first part of the race the speed is moderate, so you can take a look around and enjoy the scenery. But as the speed increases, you become more and more focused and you need to concentrate and follow the plan you have made before the start. You need to be alert and prepared for anything that can happen during the race.” 01.15 WHERE TO GO 33

Vasaloppet Name: Oskar Svärd Age: 38 years Club: Team Coop Merits: 3 victories and 2 second places in Vasaloppet. 1 victory in Marcialonga. How should an amateur prepare during the last two weeks before Vasaloppet? “With two weeks left to the race, most of the training should be done already. Some long skiing in the weekend before can be good, as well as some speed training. The last week is saved for easier workouts and lots of rest. It is important with extra reserves of energy so the body is alert before the race. If you think that hard exercise the week before will make you ski fast, then you are wrong!” How do you find that extra kick when your energy and motivation dips during the race? “Motivation is everything in this race. This is what you have focused on with your training all year. That bit should not be a problem. Everybody gets tired during Vasaloppet, but never forget that you can cope with so much more than you think. Energy levels go up and down during the race, sometimes you feel alert, sometimes tired. You have to focus and fight!” Which one of your own Vasalopp races are you most pleased with? “The years with victories are of course special. But I think I am most pleased with my race in the year 2000. It was my second Vasalopp, I was only 23 years of age, and I came second and was the top placed swede. That was when I decided to go all in for long distance cross country races.” Who is your biggest idol in cross country skiing and why? “I have two big role models: Gunde Svan and Tomas Wassberg. They were both world champions when I first started skiing and I used to dream about becoming just like them. They are two very different personalities but both were very thorough about their skiing.”
Vasaloppet trivia: Did you know..? Ernst Alm claimed victory in the first Vasaloppet in 1922 and he was also the youngest man to ever win the race. He was only 22 years and 18 days when he won. Most victories: (9 victories) Nils ‘Mora-Nisse’ Karlsson, (7) Janne Stefansson, (4 victories each) Arthur Häggblad and Jan Ottosson. Fastest times are for men: 3.38.41 (Jörgen Brink, 2012) and for women 4.08.24 (Vibeke Skofterud, 2012). During the 2013 race, skiers drank a total of 41,600 litres blueberry soup, 35,000 litres sports drink, 16,100 litres vegetable stock and 4,150 litres of coffee at the seven food and drinks stations.

Hotel BW Premier Collection is a so-called ‘Soft Brand’, which means that the hotel doesn’t use the Best Western name. It will be available in the booking system and loyalty programme, so for you, the guest, the only difference is that the name is shorter... “The idea is that these hotels already have their own strong brand which is a good reason to keep them as they are. However a big advantage for the hotel is the booking system and strong organisation that comes with being a Best Western hotel”, says Johan Kukacka, CEO for Best Western Scandinavia. To be a BW Premier Collection hotel, it must have at least a 4-star rating and also a high ranking on TripAdvisor. The hotel shall also have a central location in big cities or alternatively be a first class resort hotel. BW Premier Collection hotels are bookable via all of Best Westerns reservation channels and if you are a member of Best Western Rewards you will also receive bonus points. “An ‘ordinary’ guest will no doubt think that this is no ordinary hotel, rather one that offers that little bit extra. In this way, we are expanding our range of hotels, so that our guests have even more choice than before.” This is a new category in the multinational Best Western group, and the first hotel in the world to be selected was Malmö’s Hotel Mäster Johan. “Hotel Mäster Johan is one of Sweden’s most liked and popular hotels, so we are of course delighted and flattered that they have decided to join us”, says Johan Kukacka. He anticipates that eventually there will be between five and ten Scandinavian hotels in this category, and the goal is to add two more to the BW Premier Collection during 2015. Nina Nilsson Ulvinen, owner and Managing Director of both the Hotel Mäster Johan and the BEST WESTERN Malmö Arena Hotel, is also very pleased with the collaboration. “We have earlier experiences of working with Best Western, and really look forward to working with them again”, she says. The hotel is located in the heart of the city’s shopping and business
district, with pedestrian streets around the corner and close to Lilla Torg, Kungsparken and Malmö Central station for transport connections. “Our location gives our guests a fantastic selection of restaurants right on our doorstep. The fact that Malmö has more pubs and restaurants per capita than any other Swedish town, means there is an alternative for everyone.”

“We offer our guests an exclusive experience and want them to feel that they are well cared for. With us you are never one of the crowd.” Those wanting a more culinary experience, even for breakfast, have every chance to choose according to their personal preferences at Hotel Mäster Johan, where the kitchen is integrated with breakfast serving. “Just tell the chefs how you would like your eggs or enjoy some of the other dishes on offer”, says Nina Nilsson Ulvinen. The hotel itself was carefully refurbished during the last year in order to retain it’s modern classic feel. The 68 rooms, house a total of 150 beds, and are furnished in a Nordic style with light colours, natural material and beautiful works of art. The interior features have been carefully chosen, for example the blue marble from Brazil and the tiles from Paloma Picasso, which can be found in the bathrooms in the new part of the building. These bathrooms also include inbuilt speakers allowing guests to relax in the bath to music. “We offer our guests an exclusive experience and want them to feel that they are well cared for. With us you are never one of the crowd.” Hotel Mäster Johan has received the award ‘Sweden’s Best Business Hotel’ several times, the latest in 2013, and won TripAdvisor’s prestigious ‘Travellers’ Choice’ distinction in both 2014 and 2015. TripAdvisor also names Hotel Mäster Johan as the best hotel in Malmö.
