Take the Lead Like a Girl Scout! Girl Scouts are big thinkers, groundbreakers and role models. They design robots, start garage bands and improve their communities – and yes, they sell the best cookies on the planet. Ever since the first Girl Scout troop was formed more than 105 years ago, being a Girl Scout has been a transformative experience. More than 59 million girls have participated in our program – but we’re not resting on our century of experience helping girls achieve their dreams. We’re always evolving! When she's a Girl Scout, she’s also a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™

G.

Go-getter She’s bold, honest and determined to succeed. In her mind, failure is no reason not to get back up and try again, and again, and again. That explains why half of all U.S. businesswomen were Girl Scouts.

I.

Innovator Thinking outside the box is her specialty, so she’s always looking for a creative way to take action. A clear correlation: 75 percent of current female senators were Girl Scouts.

R.

Risk-taker Courageous and strong, she’s keen to try new things and embrace the unfamiliar. It's no wonder that nearly all of the 40 women who have traveled in space were Girl Scouts.

L.

Leader She’s confident, responsible and committed to changing the world. Here's proof: Every year, Girl Scouts collectively spend more than 75 million hours improving their communities.

These are the traits that define girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.

Dream, Expl re, BE:

Anything’s Possible!

If You Can Dream It, You Can Be It! Girls embraced their strengths and explored careers with our program theme: Dream, Explore, Be: Anything’s Possible! More than 600 Girl Scouts attended our theme kick-off event in the fall and hundreds more attended programs throughout the year. Girls were excited to meet professionals from interesting fields, participate in activities that highlighted career exploration, and give great thought to their passions and aspirations. Girls made this their year to reach for the stars!

Celebrating 100 Years of Changing the World Since 1916, millions of high school-aged Girl Scouts successfully answered the call to “Go Gold by creating and implementing sustainable community service projects. They identified a need in their community, organized teams to support their vision and took action to solve a problem. Gold Award recipients are an elite group of Girl Scouts who recognize that the award is a transformative step on their journey to becoming respected young women who can move mountains. Earning a Gold Award means that girls called upon their unique talents to make the world a better place.

6

Positive, Impactful and Sustainable Change Throughout our 105 year history, millions of Girl Scout alumnae impacted their communities and the world. For their efforts, they earned one of the following prestigious awards.

Golden Eagle of Merit 1916-1918

Golden Eaglet 1918-1939

Curved Bar 1940-1963

First Class 1963-1980

Gold Award 1980-present

It was vital to our founder, Juliette Low, that girls be recognized for their many contributions to society.

Girl Scouting for ALL Girls In 2015/16, we provided the Girl Scouting experience to 2,997 Nebraska girls through our Community Outreach programs. The outreach structure we created allows us to organize and maintain Girl Scout troops and provide activities for girls and families residing in under-served areas of our cities and towns. We see the positive impact Girl Scouting has on the girls in our programs. Unfortunately, the population of girls in Nebraska, for whom this leadership experience is essential, is growing. Each year, we successfully seek funding and build upon our volunteer force, so that we continue to have the council resources necessary to provide Girl Scouting to the girls who need us most.

Activities range from roasting s’mores by a real campfire to cleaning up parks with the Omaha police.
