G.I.R.L. Quiz G.I.R.L. Quiz Are you a go-getter, innovator, risk-taker, or leader? Find out what kind of G.I.R.L. you are with this fun quiz! 1 On vacation, you typically want to:
A) See all the really famous sights in the tour book, even if you’re tired! B) Research what interests you and plan your own itinerary. C) Forget planning—let every day be its own adventure! D) Show friends or family around places you love but they haven’t seen before.
2 At school or work, you’ve struggled with:
A) Turning in assignments when time’s up. You want everything to be perfect! B) Daydreaming. Sometimes you just get caught up in your own thoughts. C) Remembering to read the directions. You usually want to just dive right in! D) Talking too much, even if it’s about the assignment you’re working on!
3 Your favorite video games:
A) Challenge you! You want to work for that high score. B) Feature cool new technology you can test out and play with. C) Let you switch up scenes and characters as much as you want. D) Are the ones you can play with other people as a team.
4 As far as books go, you love:
A) Nonfiction. Who needs fiction when there’s so much in real life to learn about? B) Sci-fi or fantasy. Books that aren’t like everyday life help you see things differently. C) Mysteries and thrillers. It’s exciting to never know what’s going to happen next. D) Stories about relationships. Families and friendships are the best things in life!
5 When there’s a karaoke machine at a party, you: A) Sing the same song every time. You’ve practiced it, so you can hit every note! B) Tend to perform as a “backup dancer.” So many ways to bring the fun! C) Play “dare-oke” and have your friends pick songs for you that you’re scared to sing. D) Pick a song that you know another, more reserved girl might want to sing with you.
6 If you worked for NASA, you’d want to:
A) Start a program to get even more girls and women involved in space exploration. B) Invent new, faster methods of space travel and ways to gather data. C) Go out in space! How cool would it be to see Earth from the moon? D) Run the Mission Control Center, which handles any problems a space mission might encounter.
7 For Halloween, you:
A) Spend weeks thinking of and shopping for a perfect costume. Your look will be on point! B) Make your own costume. It’ll be just how you want it and you’ll save money to boot. C) Dress as your favorite, but not that famous, character. Who cares if anyone else “gets it”? D) Coordinate a group costume with your friends so that everyone’s in on the fun.
8 Your room is decorated with:
A) Posters of your idols—all the athletes, artists, and others who’ve achieved your dreams. B) Lots of artsy stuff. Collages, paintings and even images of space are inspiring to you. C) Different stuff all the time! You’ll put things up, only to get into new things and redecorate. D) Pics of you and your girl squad. You and your friends are inseparable.
9 When it comes to exercise, you:
A) Stick to the same sport—you’re just about to perfect that jump shot! B) Make up a twist on whatever sport you’re playing. New rules keep things fun! C) Are always trying something new. Switching things up keeps it interesting. D) Love cheering on your friends when they beat their own best time or high score.
If You Answered… Mostly A: You’re a go-getter! You’ve got a vision of how you want your life to look and you keep going for it, even when the going gets tough. Your can-do mentality and ambition will take you far! Mostly B: You’re an innovator! You’re an original, independent thinker. With your love of learning and natural curiosity, you’re a wonder at solving problems in creative new ways. Mostly C: You’re a risk-taker! You’ve got an open mind and love the thrill of trying new things. Your embrace of adventure will open doors for others who might not be as bold. Mostly D: You’re a leader! You’re an advocate for all and are always cheering on the group. Through empathy, team building and humility, you empower those around you to be their best.

D B J C S A Each year on February 22, World Thinking Day, girls honor their sister Girl Guides and Girl Scouts by taking time to give thanks for their international friendships and remembering that Girl Scouts of the USA is part of a global community. Part of the fun of World Thinking Day is in discovering more about the world around us. To share this experience, all participating troops and/or individuals will be required to represent a country. Check out the different ways you can do this below, then email MemberSupport@girlscoutsnebraska.org to reserve your country and receive further information. HOW TO “REPRESENT” A COUNTRY: Step 1 - Choose a country you want to learn about.

Some suggestions are: • Teaching girls how to count to 10 in the country’s language. • Performing a dance or playing an instrument unique to the country. • Teaching a game or a craft that girls might enjoy if they lived there. • Preparing and offering small samples of a food the country is known for (no nuts, please!). • Provide clothing samples, such as kimonos or sombreros, for girls to try on.

artVenture 2018 Collaborations
DBJCSA artVenture is an annual event celebrating creativity and collaboration! Small groups of Girl Scouts are matched up with artists in their communities. Together, they create a piece of art from conception to completion. Through this project, girls learn a new art medium or technique, work closely with an artist (often in their studio) and get to know other girls interested in the same art form. Most girls also make a small piece of art to take home as a keepsake of their experience. Participating girls and their families are invited to a reception where they can view their artwork on display and celebrate their contribution. • October 1, 2017 – Registration Opens at GirlScoutsNebraska.org • December 2017-January 2018 – Girl/Artist Collaboration Matching • January-March 2018 – Girl and Artist Collaborations Take Place Sunday, October 1, 2017 – Monday, April 30, 2018 Register by Friday, December 1, 2017 Girls $5* Statewide Locations *Collaborating artists may also charge each girl up to $25 for materials. Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska has developed five programs that can be facilitated by adult volunteers at a time and place that is convenient for Girl Scouts and their friends! These inexpensive programs can be ordered in advance from the council and customized for your troop, group or service unit. Wild About Nature – Head outside for a Wild About Nature adventure. Make a butterfly feeder and your own plantable paper to grow pretty flowers. Learn about conserving the world around you by creating a mock oil spill and learn how wind speed is measured with your own anemometer.
Kitchen Fun – Get to know your way around the kitchen. Learn about different gadgets we use to cook with, share your favorite recipes with your friends and make your own apron to wear. Learn about kitchen safety and bake a fun treat for your friends. Textiles by the Yard – All good designs start with the knowledge of textiles. Play with fabric swatches in a number of activities that will nurture your inner designer. Learn to dye fabrics, sew a sachet and more! S’more About Cookies – Get a jump start on your Girl Scout Cookie Program! Explore the five skills and learn about business ethics, goal setting, decision making, money management and people skills. Create tools to make your cookie season a success. Nature Crafts – Do you love doing crafts? Do you love the outdoors? Use the outdoors to make crafts and play games. Have fun making a bird feeder, tic tac toe game, nature pet, journal, frog caller and nature hike bracelets! NOTE: These activities will need to be done outside, preferably at a park or nature center.
Each Program on Demand Kit Includes: Most program supplies and directions (other than common household items). Customized support from our expert program specialists. Professionally designed flyer template, via email, to use as a promotion for your troop or service unit. Fun patch for each girl. Wild About Rewards Card sticker for each girl.
Additional Information: Program on Demand kits are $5 per girl. Kits can be picked up at the service center or mailed right to you! All supplies are yours once you receive them – you don’t have to return anything. Please allow one month between ordering your kits and the day you plan to facilitate the program. These programs can be used with all ages of girls and troops, and would be a perfect facilitation opportunity for girls who need Program Aide hours, too! GirlScoutsNebraska.org

Girl Scout Girl Awards Girl Scout Gold Award Grades 9-12 (Seniors and Ambassadors) Using your passion and talents you can Go Gold and earn the highest honor in Girl Scouting. Open only to girls in high school, this prestigious award challenges you to address a community problem and create a sustainable solution! The Gold Award is viewed by admissions counselors with great regard; you will be eligible for additional college scholarships; and every young woman who earns Gold is eligible to move up one rank in the military.
Girl Scout Silver Award • Grades 6-8 (Cadettes) Have you ever looked around your neighborhood or school and wondered how you could make a change for the better? Earning the Silver Award – the highest honor for Cadettes – gives you the chance to show that you are a leader who is organized, determined and dedicated.
Girl Scout Bronze Award • Grades 4-5 (Juniors) The Bronze Award is a leadership adventure and the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. As you and your team plan and complete your project, you’ll develop more confidence, meet new people and have the kind of fun that happens when you work together to make a difference.
Girl Award Ceremonies Girl Award Ceremonies, recognizing recipients of the Bronze, Silver and Gold Award, are held each year in May and June. Ceremony details will be listed in the Girl’s Guide to Summer Fun and on our website.
TAKE ACTION GIRL AWARD PROJECT IDEAS If you are looking for a Gold, Silver or Bronze Award Take Action project idea, try Community Mapping. It highlights a community’s resources and needs. As you explore your community you might discover something that you find concerning and that could be the inspiration for a great Take Action project. Learn more about Community Mapping in the following Girl Scout Journey books: GIRLtopia: pages 90–93; BREATHE: pages 58–60; Agent of Change: pages 70–77. Another way to brainstorm project ideas is to start conversations! Maybe a friend or family member has a health concern? Maybe they have seen or experienced something that made an impact in their lives? Does hearing their story inspire you to take action? 68
For more inspiration, visit GirlScouts.org/mapit. This map highlights projects completed by Girl Scouts from all around the world.
Thinking about earning Gold, Silver or Bronze? Submit a Girl Award Intent Form, found on our website, at the beginning of your process. This enables us to provide encouragement, support and share important information regarding your Take Action project.
Pat Meyer Nebraska Young Women of Distinction We invite girls who earn their Gold Award to apply for the Pat Meyer Nebraska Young Women of Distinction recognition. At least three applicants will be chosen, and each will receive a plaque, a college scholarship and a lifetime Girl Scout membership, all provided by Pat Meyer’s family in her honor. The council then nominates those who receive this recognition for Girl Scouts of the USA’s National Young Women of Distinction award. If selected, honorees receive a $5,000 academic scholarship sponsored by Kappa Delta Foundation. For more information, contact MemberSupport@girlscoutsnebraska.org.

2017-2018 Annual Program Guide
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteer Appreciation Sunday, April 22, 2018 is Girl Scout Leader's Day! Nominate a Special Volunteer! April 22 is an official day to appreciate all adult Girl Scout volunteers – but let’s keep the warm fuzzies going all month! If you see a Girl Scout volunteer, tell her or him “Thank you.” Sometimes the best appreciation doesn’t require any spoken works… grab a card (or make one), write “Thank You for All You Do!” and present it to your volunteer. Consider nominating an awesome Girl Scout volunteer for a Spirit of Nebraska or Girl Scouts of the USA Volunteer Award. Nominating is as easy as 1-2-3! Get all the details on our website (search Volunteer Awards).
Ways to Show Appreciation to Volunteers at No Cost 1. Public Recognition – Tell your entire troop, school or community about an awesome volunteer by sharing a story of how the volunteer has impacted you. 2. Deliver a Handwritten Note of Appreciation – One of the most effective forms of appreciation is a handwritten note. Your note should be personal to the recipient, specifically mention why you’re recognizing them and let them know why you appreciate them. 3. Give a Hug, High Five, Fist Bump or Handshake – Sometimes the best appreciation doesn’t require any words at all! Show volunteers how much you appreciate their efforts with a high five or other similar gesture. Trace your hand on construction paper and inside the hand write what you appreciate about your volunteer then “hand” it to them in person. 4. Spell Out Your Appreciation in Chalk – Get a bucket of chalk and get to work outside your school or meeting place! Write “Thank You,” “We Appreciate You,” and quotes about volunteerism on the sidewalk and parking lot. Volunteers will be surprised to see the colorful notes!
Ways to Show Appreciation to Volunteers at Low Cost 1. Create Your Own Bookmarks – Remind your volunteers how much they are appreciated every time they open a book. Create appreciation bookmarks with a simple design and meaningful quote about volunteers. Laminate them and punch a hole in the top for a ribbon. 2. Give a Packet of Seeds or a Plant – Express your appreciation to volunteers for helping you grow as a Girl Scout with the gift of a plant or a packet of seeds. As their plants grow, they’ll be reminded of your gratitude. 3. Serve Baked Goods – Treat volunteers to a sweet surprise. Invite troop members to bring in baked goods for your volunteers to thank them for their dedication. You can serve the treats potluck-style for everyone to share or create a special package for them to take home to share with their family. 4. Plant a Tree in Their Honor – For a lasting sign of appreciation, plant a tree on the grounds of your meeting place or in the volunteer’s neighborhood. Create a plaque to dedicate the tree in their honor. 5. Arrange for Relaxing Neck and Shoulder Massages – Reduce the stress in your volunteer’s lives by arranging a massage therapist to treat them to neck and shoulder massages at your next troop meeting. 6. Dedicate a Brick or Decorative Landscaping – In honor of a special volunteer, purchase a garden decoration or a brick in their honor. Dedicate it to them and place it in a special place at your meeting place or in your community for everyone to admire. GirlScoutsNebraska.org
