2020 ANNUAL REPORT

A NEW GIRL SCOUT WORLD In March 2020, the world changed dramatically, and Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska pivoted to meet the challenges of serving girls during a pandemic. As school moved online and social distancing became the norm, girls experienced significant disruptions in their lives. Girls needed Girl Scouts more than ever. Spirit of Nebraska developed Girl Scouts at Home to reach girls virtually with programs based on the four Girl Scout Leadership Experience pillars (STEM, outdoors, life skills, and entrepreneurship). Free, live programming was offered twice a day every weekday featuring virtual camps, horse lessons, yoga, singalongs, science experiments, and more. Other initiatives included an online camp scavenger hunt, a Home Sweet Home patch program, and a Flat Juliette Challenge. For girls without internet access, Outreach specialists designed activity kits that were distributed at schools, community partner organizations, and service centers. Several grants supported this initiative. When the 2020 Camporee was canceled, girls were invited to a weekendlong virtual camporee. This in-depth program laid the groundwork for new

V.I.P. (Virtual Interactive POWER) Programs, hands-on experiences led by the Program specialists such as badge, Journey, and award workshops. Virtual troops for current Girl Scouts — and girls interested in joining — were started for each age level, providing girls a chance to continue their adventures even if their troop stopped meeting. Resources created to support co-leaders included virtual enrichment workshops, tips on how to run virtual meetings, and Zoom training. In addition, the council’s fundraising event, artVenture, shifted to an online silent auction — one of the first major fundraisers in the state to do so. Collaborative artwork created by Girl Scouts and artists, along with donated pieces, brought beauty into the world and revenue to the council. Last spring, no one imagined how long the pandemic would last and how many changes Girl Scouts would undergo. Spirit of Nebraska continues to adapt and provide what girls and volunteers need, while always keeping their safety the highest priority.
