The Girl Scout Difference We all know the Girl Scout mission: building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. But how exactly does that happen? Our success comes from focusing on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Every Girl Scout activity, program, and award teaches girls to thrive in five key areas, providing the skills needed to succeed in school and in life!

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE) Five Outcomes: SENSE OF SELF Girls have confidence in themselves and their abilities, and form positive identities.

POSITIVE VALUES Girls act ethically, honestly, and responsibly, and show concern for others.

CHALLENGE SEEKING Girls learn to take appropriate risks, try things even if they might fail, and learn from mistakes.

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS Girls develop and maintain healthy relationships by resolving conflicts constructively and communicating their feelings directly.

COMMUNITY PROBLEM SOLVING

Girls desire to contribute to the world in purposeful and meaningful ways, learn how to identify problems in the community, and create “action plans” to solve th Girl Scouts are more likely than non-Girl Scouts to:* • Work collaboratively with others on group projects (86% vs. 61%) • Engage in hands-on activities and reflect on what worked/didn’t work (81% vs. 59%) • Take an active role in decision-making (80% vs. 51%) *Methodology: An online survey was conducted by the research firm Decision Analyst and consisted of 3014 girls (1507 Girl Scouts, 1507 non-Girl Scouts) aged 5-18. Quotas were set by age, race/ethnicity, region, and family income to achieve a nationally representative sample. For more information, contact gsresearch@girlscouts.org and look for more statistics from this survey throughout this book.

Volunteer-to-girl ratios show the minimum number of volunteers needed to supervise a specific number of girls and ensure their safety and health. See the Volunteer-to-Girl ratio chart at www.GirlScoutsNebraska.org/ratios.

DNA of a G.I.R.L. While some people still think of us as just cookies, badges, campfires, and friendship bracelets, Girl Scouts are so much more. Girl Scouts are groundbreakers, big thinkers, and role models. Girl Scouts design robots, start garage bands, and improve their communities—and yes, they sell the best cookies on the planet. She’s a go-getter, innovator, risk-taker, and leader!

Sets goals and sticks to them. Works hard to bring positive change to the world.

Listens to different opinions and feelings. Sees new solutions. Speaks up for herself and others.

CALL TO ACTION

We only have one planet. There is no Planet B. Because Girl Scouts are called to make the world a better place, it is up to us to protect our Earth. If we combine our strength, determination, and commitment, we can conserve resources and protect – even improve – our planet’s future. Whether it’s as simple as turning off lights or as complex as creating a Bronze, Silver, or Gold Award project that protects pollinators, EVERY Girl Scout can make a difference.

Become part of something BIG! Take action to improve our world through these special programs:

Nebraska Bioblitz Grades K-12 DBJCS A  Saturday, August 15, 2020 A bioblitz focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area during a short time. The goal is to get an overall count of plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms living in a place. Participating in these hands-on studies is a fun and exciting way for Girl Scouts to join experts and scientists in the field, learn about biodiversity, and better understand how to protect it. Since being created in 1996 by the National Park Service, bioblitzes have been held throughout the world. Over the years, participants have identified many species rarely found in the parks where inventories were conducted. Maybe you’ll make an unexpected discovery. IMPACT OF WORLD CLEANUP DAY 2019 WORLDWIDE... • 180 Countries • 20 Million Total Participants

Take Action by Tracking Light Pollution Globe at Night Grades K-12, Families Summer 2020*

DBJCSAF

Globe at Night is an international citizen science campaign to raise awareness of the impact of light pollution. Citizen scientists (that’s you!) measure the night sky brightness and submit observations from a computer or smart phone. Why? Because light pollution threatens not only our right to starlight, but also affects energy consumption, wildlife, and health. More than 180,000 measurements have been contributed by people in 180 countries over the last 12 years, making Globe at Night the most successful light pollution awareness campaign to date! *Watch our website for more information.

Take Action by Cleaning the World World Cleanup Day 2020 Grades K-12, Families DBJCSAF  Saturday, September 19, 2020 What would happen if every person picked up at least one piece of litter on the same day? Around the globe, organizations and individuals will join forces for World Cleanup Day (and National Cleanup Day) on Saturday, September 19, to beautify our parks, trails, beaches, mountains, and open spaces.

OUR EARTH, OUR FUTURE

Take Action by Joining a Bioblitz!

Now, imagine if EVERY Girl Scout across Nebraska participated in World Cleanup Day. What an incredible impact we would make! Gather your family, friends, and fellow Girl Scouts, and visit a park, lake, or any public area in your community to clean up litter and make the world a better place. After you’re done, be prepared to share your impact with the council! What impact will me make in 2020?

Celebrate Girl Scout Week! 7 Days Of Action Girl Scout week is celebrated annually to recognize the founding of Girl Scouts Girl Scout Week starts on Girl Scout Sunday, always includes March 12, and concludes on Girl Scout Sabbath the following Saturday. Girls throughout the U.S. and around the world unite to observe the beginning of Girl Scouts, now over 100 years old. The first Girl Scout meeting was held March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, when 18 girls became the very first members. Since then, Girl Scouts has grown to over 4 million members worldwide. During Girl Scout week, girls and volunteers celebrate the history, meaning, and rich traditions of Girl Scouts. Watch for information on ways to participate or plan your own activities. *Whether you observe Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, another religion, or no religion, take some time today to connect with your beliefs and values and learn about someone else’s. You can earn the My Promise, My Faith pin along the way!
