Girl’s Guide to Summer Fun

Girl Scout Basics Benefits of Girl Scouts

Try new things. Make new friends. Go on countless adventures. There’s a whole world of opportunities waiting for you when you become a Girl Scout! In Girl Scouting, girls enjoy the fun, friendship, and power of girls together. Through enriching experiences and activities, girls discover their values, connect with those who share their vision, and take action to make the world a better place.

Who Can Become a Girl Scout? Any girl, kindergarten through 12th grade, and any adult can join Girl Scouts. You can join a troop or attend events as an Individual Girl Member. Annual, national membership dues for October 1, 2021 - September 30, 2022, are $25 for each girl and adult. Register your Girl Scout membership online at GirlScoutsNebraska.org.

Girl Scout Mission Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Girl Scout Promise On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

Girl Scout Law I will do my best to be: honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to: respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.

IMPORTANT! NEW PROGRAM REGISTRATION OPENS DECEMBER 17 at GirlScoutsNebraska.org.

The Girl Scout Difference We all know the Girl Scout mission: building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. But how exactly does that happen? Our success comes from focusing on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE). The GSLE is designed to help girls everywhere develop as leaders and build confidence by learning new skills. It also ensures that Girl Scouts at every level are sharing a powerful, national experience—girls together changing the world!

FOUR PILLARS OF THE GSLE

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

LIFE SKILLS

STEM

OUTDOORS

Everything in Girl Scouts centers around our four pillars, designed to meet her where she is now and to grow along with her. Whether she's building a robotic arm, coding her first app, packing for her first hike, or advocating for change in her community, a Girl Scout has an exciting array of choices to suit her interests at every age.

Five Outcomes of the GSLE Our GSLE is a one-of-a-kind leadership development program for girls, with proven results. When girls participate in Girl Scouts, they thrive in five key ways:

3

4

5

Strong Sense of Self

Positive Values

Challenge Seeking

Healthy Relationships

Supervision Some of the programs listed in this guide are open to girls only, with council staff or volunteers providing the necessary supervision. Other programs require that adults register and attend with girls. For those programs, marked with the Supervision Required symbol ( ) and noted in the program description, adults must register for the program (and be a current Girl Scout member) and attend with girls using the recommended volunteer-to-girl ratios. Volunteer-to-girl ratios show the minimum number of volunteers needed to supervise a specific number of girls and ensure their safety and health. Your group must have at least two unrelated, approved volunteers present at all times, plus additional volunteers as necessary for the group’s size. Any adult who supervises girls must be at least 18 years old, a registered Girl Scout member, and background screened before volunteering. One troop co-leader in every group must be female. See the Volunteer-to-Girl ratio chart at www.GirlScoutsNebraska.org/ratios.

Safety Guidelines For safety guidelines for particular activities, search our website for “Safety Activity Checkpoints.”

PROGRAM SYMBOLS Each Spirit of Nebraska program is designed for different grade levels, and may include a specific theme or activity. This key will help you understand grade levels and the corresponding symbols to pick the events that are just right for you or your troop/group:

Celebrate Girl Scout Week! Girl Scout week is celebrated annually to recognize the founding of Girl Scouts. Girl Scout Week starts the week of March 12 on Girl Scout Sunday and concludes on Girl Scout Sabbath the following Saturday. Girls throughout the U.S. and around the world unite to observe the beginning of Girl Scouts. The first Girl Scout meeting was held March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, when 18 girls became the very first members. Since then, Girl Scouts has grown to over 4 million members worldwide. During Girl Scout week, girls and volunteers celebrate the history, meaning, and rich traditions of Girl Scouts. Watch for information soon on ways to participate or plan your own activities. *Girl Scout Sunday and Sabbath are special days dedicated to thinking about your beliefs, no matter whatFun they are, and how they’re reflected in the   Girl’s Guide to Summer Girl Scout Law. TAKE ACTION PROJECT IDEAS If you are looking for a Gold, Silver, or Bronze Award Take Action project idea, try Community Mapping. It highlights a community’s resources and needs. As you explore your community, you might discover something that you find concerning and that could be the inspiration for a great Take Action project. Learn more about Community Mapping in the following Girl Scout Journey books: GIRLtopia: pages 90–93; BREATHE: pages 58–60; Agent of Change: pages 70–77. Another way to brainstorm project ideas is to start conversations! Maybe a friend or family member has a health concern? Maybe they have seen or experienced something that made an impact in their lives? Does hearing their story inspire you to take action? For more inspiration, visit GirlScouts. org/mapit. This map highlights projects completed by Girl Scouts from all around the world.
