25 YEARS OF LEARNING & PARTICIPATION At Spitalfields Music our work goes far beyond the reaches of our two festivals. Throughout the year we work with around 10,000 people from Tower Hamlets in creative projects and courses. It’s something we’ve been doing since 1989 and we’re proud to celebrate the 25th birthday of our award-winning Learning & Participation programme throughout the Summer Festival. You’ll find music-making for ears of all ages, from our hit Musical Rumpus series for 0-2 year-olds (The Mountain Shakers), to young 2

musicians from across the borough working with our Associate Artists (Music for a King, Watercycle), and our all-female chorus Women sing East with mix of pop, jazz and more. We culminate our celebration with David Lang’s Crowd Out, an powerful new piece for 1000 people.

Our Associate Artists this year, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Arun Ghosh, have put together a wonderful series to give our Summer Festival its core; for a fascinating artistic journey, consider following their events. Alongside them, we have stunning and contrasting music-theatre pieces, visual arts/ music collaborations, the brightest and best in early music from the well established to rising talent, a series of world premieres and lots of concerts for young ears. What draws all of this together? A spirit of adventure and place in this unique part of London. 2014 is of course a year of anniversaries: the beginning of the Georgian era, World War I, and the laying of the first stone of Nicholas Hawksmoor’s Christ Church Spitalfields. We have our own celebration – the 25th anniversary of our Learning & Participation programme. The charity was at the vanguard of arts education and remains so today, finding ways to offer music as a central part of borough life, as something which brings pure enjoyment and which also raises aspirations, pointing to individual potential and collective endeavour.

We’ll be marking our anniversary at the end of the Summer Festival with Crowd Out, a new piece written by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang. Performed on Arnold Circus Bandstand, the piece will be presented by 1000 people of all ages and promises not only to be an iconic event in the summer calendar, but also an extraordinary exploration of our place in ‘the crowd’. Celebrating three centuries of the Geffrye Museum as both almshouses and museum, enjoy a drinks reception followed by three musical reflections (including three newly commissioned works) bringing together sounds of the baroque and the present day.

After a riotous decade together, our all-female chorus and their extraordinary leader Laka D recreate some of their favourite musical moments. Bryn Harrison composer Tim Head digital artist London Sinfonietta Sound and abstract image interplay in the world premiere of a reflective, kaleidoscopic work by Bryn Harrison and Tim Head. Taking musical traditions in a new direction, the centrepiece is a new set of Scottish Variations on the folk tune Tullochgorum, accompanied by concertos from JS Bach and Sally Beamish in which folk instrumentalists Chris Stout and Catriona McKay take the lead.
