We are Spitalfields Music Through our festivals and pioneering, award-winning Learning & Participation programme, we inspire and connect people with exceptional music making. Each year we reach over 10,000 people aged from 2 days old to 90+ with creative music making in schools, children’s centres and libraries. Our music projects take place throughout our home borough of Tower Hamlets, East London, the UK and abroad. 95% of our activities are free for people to access. Viol consort Fretwork and vocal ensemble Red Byrd bring 16th century London to life through a series of intricate works. London’s thriving streets were the place to buy and sell, with merchants shouting loud to penetrate the hubbub of everyday life. These ‘cries’ caught the attention of leading composers who set them to music in lively sound-portraits, which are brought to life once again in this performance.

Described as “one of London’s musical treasures” (Evening Standard), instrumental group She’Koyokh weaves together a variety of Balkan folk and klezmer to create their distinctive and vivacious sound. They are joined by Romanian singer and puppeteer Monooka for a magical journey through eastern European winter folk traditions in the haunting atmosphere of Shoreditch Church.

In a dazzling end to this year’s festival, newcomers Solomon’s Knot present JS Bach’s seasonal masterpiece as you’ve never heard it before. Without a conductor, the group perform from memory adding subtle dramatisation throughout the piece.
