Welcome to our 40th Summer Festival Welcome to our Summer Festival: a celebration of our unique home of Tower Hamlets and the spirit of the people who live and work within it. 2016 marks our 40th birthday and we are proud to offer a diverse programme celebrating all that we have achieved since the charity’s inception. We offer the brightest stars in early music, from the well established to rising talent, a series of world premieres by exceptional young composers as well as magnificent cross-arts collaborations. Alongside these, we celebrate the notion of play in a midsummer’s day of fun-filled activities and present a collection of stunningly captivating shows for young ears. Over the past 40 years, both the area and Spitalfields Music have changed considerably, but the heart of the charity remains the same: working collectively to harness the power of extraordinary music-making as a force for community cohesion. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks to all those who have helped make Spitalfields Music what it is today. I hope you can join us in Spitalfields in June to celebrate and to help us launch the next 40 years! Eleanor Gussman — Chief Executive

Life begins at... Our story began in 1976 with a concert organised by the Friends of Christ Church Spitalfields to help save Hawksmoor’s magnificent, but then near derelict, Christ Church. Born from a love of music, the organisation grew from its first festival a year later in one venue to a charity that presents two annual music festivals in over 20 local venues, and runs a year-round Learning & Participation programme – acclaimed for its pioneering approach – across East London and beyond. Over the coming years we will continue to use music to celebrate life, unleash creativity and develop the audiences of the future. Play your part in securing the future of Spitalfields Music by adding £4, £40 or more when booking your tickets. Or walk alongside fellow audience members, Spitalfields Music staff and volunteers for an enjoyable sponsored walk on Saturday 23 April through Tower Hamlets. For more information on how you can take part in the walk and raise funds towards our 'Life begins at...' appeal please email development@spitalfieldsmusic.org.uk or visit spitalfieldsmusic.org.uk
