Dear SPJST,

It was an honor to receive a scholarship from your organization. Your contribution is such a blessing for my family and me. Thank you for helping make it possible to pursue my dream of becoming an HVAC technician. I hope one day, I will be able to help other students achieve their goals just as you helped me.

Dear SPJST Scholarship Committee,

I am writing to express my gratitude for making the SPJST scholarship possible. I was very excited to learn that I had been selected as a recipient and appreciate your support.

I will be attending Sam Houston State University in the fall where I will major in geology with minors in environmental science and biology. After receiving my degree, I hope to work as a National Park Ranger.

Thank you for your support and generosity. This assistance will help me pay for my college expenses. Thank you once again.

It’s Your Life

Are You an Orphan?

When we think of orphans, we think of parentless children or children from broken homes needing family, love, and attention.

In the life insurance business, orphans take on a different meaning. Orphans are policyholders who no longer have an agent. Their agent is no longer with the company, passed away, retired, or just out of the business. Like orphan children, these policies need attention, too. If they don’t get the attention, you could end up with problems later on.

Agents are there to help guide you with any changes in your life that could affect you later. You may get married, get divorced, have children, lose a loved one, change your name, your address, and many other things that could slow the process of getting your loved ones the life insurance money you paid for to make sure they are taken care of. Unfortunately, in our industry when an agent leaves, these policies get neglected.

SPJST is in the process of assigning active agents to any orphan accounts. This will be a two-year process. An active agent can see your account, answer any questions about your policy, and help you update your information. They can give you the love and attention that a policy needs. You, as a member, can help speed up this process.

SPJST has constructed a group of agents and trained them to work orphan accounts. Each agent is given a small set of names and numbers to contact to help get you an active agent. If you receive a call from an agent, please take the call and allow them to help update your information and make sure you have what is right for your current situation. You may receive a letter from them introducing themselves and asking for information. Don’t be afraid to answer that letter, they are only trying to help. If you have relatives who are members, let that agent know. If your relatives no longer

have an active agent, they can help them also. Remember every agent works for every lodge. Let them help you.

In the future, when an agent’s contract is terminated, all their clients will be assigned to an active agent so they can immediately be serviced. The goal is to have every member get an active agent by the end of 2023 (currently, we have 20,000 orphan accounts). With everyone’s help, we can reach this goal. Here are a few things to remember:

1. If you get a call, take it or return the message. If you are unsure if that person is really an agent, give me a call at 832232-2049, and I’ll confirm it.

2. If you receive a letter asking for information, complete the information and return the letter. We are just trying to help.

3. If you don’t want to wait for that phone call, you can call me, the Home Office, or a territory manager. We will assign an agent to help you update or answer any questions you may have.

4. Every agent works for every lodge. With so many orphan accounts, we put the trained team together to help you –no matter where you are. They work for whatever lodge you are part of. They work for all SPJST, not a lodge or district.

In the end, it’s about you and making sure that your loved ones get what you left for them as soon as possible. We don’t want outdated information to stop your loved ones from getting what they deserve.

My door is always open; figuratively and literally.

“The best times we’ve had on earth are usually with those we love.”

Stay blessed, Delisle L. Doherty

Lodge 81, Needville members learn about youth activities

SPJST Lodge 81, Needville met on Sunday, June 11, 2023. After a prayer of thanks by the youth, members enjoyed a meal of pizza, side dishes, and desserts made by the youth. A big thanks to Willie Mae Kuykendall for getting everything ready in the kitchen and to Kristen Jones for picking up the pizza.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the youth. Jeanette Newman and Glenn McDonald are still on the sick list. Everyone answered the roll call except Special Funds Chair Marion Morales.

Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read her report, and it was approved as read. Treasurer Bradley Stavinoha read his report, and it was approved as read. Special Funds Chair Marion Morales will present his report at the July meeting.

Since we didn’t have any old business, we moved straight to new business. Youth Leader Kristen Jones announced that District Five will have eight youth attending camp at Camp Kubena this summer. The youth made the desserts for our meeting for member feedback for when they go to the state competition. Everything was delicious. Kristen Jones also reported that the first Trivia Night was a success. She also handed out coloring pages for everyone to color for the “Color a Smile” nonprofit organization that will send these

SPJST

pages to a military nursing home for the residents to enjoy. Everyone had fun coloring. Also under new business, Kristen Jones said there is another organization she was looking at called “Hope for Three.” This organization is located in Fort Bend County. They are autism advocates and will hold a golf tournament on October 2 to raise funds at the Sweetwater Country Club. She and some of the youth will attend to volunteer. The last organization Kristen mentioned is called “Take Me Home Program.” They are also in Fort Bend County, and their organization is to help lost persons wandering the streets. All of these organizations which Kristen presented information were very helpful. Thank you, Kristen.

Door prize winners were Jeanette Newman, Leon Anhaiser, Glenn McDonald, and Shirley Myers. Congratulations to our winners!

Next Meeting—July 16

For the next meeting on Sunday, July 16, we decided to have fried chicken. Shirley Meyers volunteered to pick up the chicken at Hartz’s Chicken in Rosenberg. Thank you, Shirley.

and new business took place.

Those missing due to health issues were Bernie Janecka, Kathy Thome, and Janet Basham. They have been under the weather for a while now, and we are sending prayers for their recovery. Stanley Krenek and Mary Ann Krivanek were with us this day, and we were so happy to have them joining us again. While I did not announce it at the meeting, my cousin Fred Merlick passed away a couple of weeks ago and his service was held on Friday.

A couple months ago, President Cathy asked for suggestions or program ideas for our meetings. So one of those suggestions was to have a CPR demonstration. Therefore, the demonstration/ class has been scheduled and will take place at the July meeting. A representative from TCCC will give instructions on what to do in an emergency. We encourage those of you who are interested to come be with us.

We will also celebrate the birth of our nation - the Fourth of July - with a game or two. For one of the games, participants need to come with their purses stuffed with assorted items. I don’t know how the game will go from there so you will just need to come, join the fun (which I am sure we will have), and find out how it ends!

And for the last order of business, it

was announced that we are going to collect pennies/coins for SPJST scholarships. We ask that you bring your change to put in the “jug” that will be emptied when full and sent to the Home Office.

Birthdays were then celebrated; door prizes were won, and lodge activities were shared. It was a busy meeting, and July should be as well. As always, we invite you to join us for our gatherings.

One last bit of news was that President Cathy shared some personal information. She was recently recognized by the United States Bowling Congress for 50 consecutive years of participating at the Women’s National Tourney. What a feat! Congratulations!

Respectfully submitted, Joan Simek Shropshire

Lodge 107, Floresville shares highlights of June meeting

On Sunday, June 11, 2023, SPJST Lodge 107, Floresville convened its eagerly anticipated monthly gathering at the prestigious lodge hall; beginning promptly at 3 p.m. President Bielefeld skillfully initiated the meeting, setting the stage for a harmonious and productive session. As a symbol of unity and patriotism, attendees reverently recited the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a poignant moment of silence to honor the memory of departed members as well as pay tribute to the valiant military personnel and esteemed veterans.

During the roll call of officers, it was noted that Treasurer Korus and Youth Leader Lynn were unfortunately absent.

PAWS FOR A CAUSE Lodge 97, Placedo gives to Adopt a pet in victoria

Secretary Pruski proceeded to read the minutes from the April meeting, which was unanimously approved as presented. Despite Treasurer Korus’ absence, he had thoughtfully left behind his books, enabling the reading and approval of the March and April treasurer’s report.

The lodge received a heartfelt thank you card from Mrs. Ray Klespies expressing her gratitude for the generous donation made to the Floresville Academic Scholarship Fund. Moreover, Bradley Meuth, a recent graduate and scholarship recipient, took the time to send a thank you card to express his appreciation. Additionally, a letter from the Home Office was shared, highlighting the outstanding achievement of Caitlyn Pettet, a dedicated youth club member, who also received a well-deserved scholarship.

In her report, Hall Manager Bertrand addressed the need for another round of lawn maintenance, emphasizing the importance of keeping our surroundings pristine. Notably, the demand for rentals

continues to display remarkable strength. Recognizing the increasing expenses associated with managing the hall, the topic of raising the rent was introduced for discussion. After a fruitful exchange of ideas, it was collectively agreed upon to adjust the prices for both day hall rentals and half-day rentals the day before an event. Furthermore, it was proposed that we organize a hall cleanup day during the forthcoming autumn, taking advantage of the cooler weather.

Under the category of old business, it was raised that acquiring reflective tape for the front door step would enhance its visibility. No new business was brought forward for discussion.

June birthday celebrant was Wendy Pruski on the 5th. Happy birthday, Wendy!

Lodge 84, Dallas Youth Club reports on June meeting

Dear Readers,

The youth of Lodge 84, Dallas continue to meet on a monthly basis. This month, Youth Leader Lynda handed out copies of the SPJST State Youth Showcase guidebook, the tentative SPJST Youth Showcase schedule, flyers with guidelines for 2023 youth group incentives, monthly caring challenges, and quarterly community projects. We reviewed everything and have a plan in place to be able to contribute with all the activities listed.

Youth Leader Lynda then distributed the six Color a Smile pages for the June Caring Challenge activity. She asked us to be creative with our coloring skills and send back to the fraternal department at the Home Office for distribution to senior citizens, our troops, and

anyone in need of a smile. Youth Leader Lynda then asked us to join in congratulating Ryan Ruzicka on his graduation from high school and moving on to Texas A&M University to continue his studies!

The meeting was then adjourned. Fraternally, Josh Tucker —SPJST—

Dear Vestnik Readers,

It is finally June! I think summer break is the best time ever! Okay, maybe not for adults. But for us kids, it is the best time ever! I get to go to a million camps! Ram Camp, Camp Invention, and Vacation Bible School! Maybe only three. Last month, I got a new puppy. Her name is Bailey. She is very funny! We have a dog named Lily. She is also very funny. She and Bailey are battling for the silliest. So far, Lilly is winning. Well, I am getting kind of tired of typing so I’m going to say bye now! Bye!

Fraternally, Andrew Ordogne,

Remember, this is not just about winning or losing. It is about embracing the joy of creativity, pushing your boundaries, and discovering the incredible talent that lies within you. You are capable of achieving great things, and the SPJST State Youth Showcase is the perfect platform for you to unleash your potential and leave an indelible mark on the world.

So, gather your courage, polish your skills, and join us at the SPJST State Youth Showcase. Together, let us create a magical experience that will be cherished forever.

We eagerly await your participation and look forward to witnessing the extraordinary talents that you possess. Join us, and let your brilliance illuminate the stage!

With anticipation and excitement, SPJST

In Memory of Fred D. Merlick

Fred D. Merlick, 87, passed away on May 30, 2023.

Memorial service was at 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 9, 2023 in Mount Olivet Chapel.

Fred D. Merlick was born to Maxinne and Fred Merlick on June 21, 1935 — a born and raised “Fort Worthian.” Fred had various jobs throughout his life where he installed windows, sold ads for the Fort Worth Star Telegram, sold real estate, and finally landing in the aircraft business in General Mechanics then into Bell Helicopter where he stayed for 30 years.

Fred married Edna De Poyster on December 10, 1964. They had two children, Sharon and Forrest Merlick.

He loved his family very much. He was a member of Glenview Church in Haltom City. He loved his family, his church, and his Lord. He was also a member of SPJST Lodge 154, Fort Worth.

Fred was truly a family man and loved to travel with them to many states and interesting cities. Even though he loved to travel, he was notorious for getting lost during vacations even with his gift of telling someone how to get somewhere. On a trip the family took to Red River, New Mexico, he went back to Texas up and through Oklahoma. One trip to Louisiana, he argued with the GPS the entire time and got the family lost in a town of only 400 people. Despite this, he always managed to find some truly amazing places to eat during the journeys.

When Malachi wanted to get a dog, they adopted one and let his grandson name him Ike. Fred swore up and down he would not sleep in the house, but Ike slept in the house that first night. Then he said that Ike couldn’t be up on the furniture and before you knew it, Fred even let him up on the bed and got him his own chair for the bedroom. He loved Ike very much.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; grandson Blake Alex Matherly; and daughter Sharon Merlick.

Fred is survived by wife Edna Merlick; son Forrest Merlick; grandson Malachi Karnstein; granddaughter Brooklyn Merlick Coleman; sister Dorris Mobley, and very sweet, mischievous dog Ike.

CESAT announces Czech language classes for high school, university, and adult students

The Czech Ex-Students Association of Texas (CESAT) is pleased to inform you of the Czech language courses that are offered through Blinn College. CZECH 1471 (Beginning Czech I), CZECH 1472 (Beginning Czech II) , Czech 1371 (Intermediate Czech I), Czech 1372 (Intermediate Czech II), and advanced conversational Czech are offered at Blinn College via the internet. You can study Czech from the comfort of home. High school students may take the courses for dual credit. Dual credit classes are taken by high school students for high school foreign language credit as well as transferable university credit.

Because of the rich Czech heritage in Texas, learning the Czech language is particularly appealing to students and adults. It provides an opportunity for students of Czech descent to maintain their heritage and culture that is interwoven in the settlement and growth of many communities in Texas. It may also provide an additional language for students who are interested in majoring in international business or European studies.

Due to scholarships offered by CESAT, a high school student can earn 14 hours of transferable university credit for free.

The instructor of the course uses distance learning technology so that students can take the course live online on their high school campus using a computer equipped with a microphone and headset. In the Fall 2023 semester, the course will be offered live online Monday through Thursday from 7:45 a.m. until 8:50 a.m. for beginning Czech and intermediate Czech from 8:55 to 9:40 a.m. To defray the cost of the course,

CESAT and other Texas Czech organizations have provided funds so that scholarships are available for students enrolling in the Czech language courses.

Adults may also take these classes for either university credit as a continuing education class.

Shannon Williford who serves as the Director for Dual Credit Programs at Blinn College can assist you in getting your students registered for the university or dual credit course. Her email is Shannon.Williford@blinn.edu or telephone 979-209-8218.

Loraine Orellana, who serves as Coordinator of Distance and Community Education at the Blinn College-Schulenburg Campus, can register you for the continuing education class. Ms. Orellana’s phone number is 979-743- 5237, and her email is lorellana@blinn.edu.

The day will be filled with exciting events and presentations:

1. Morning Refreshments. Kolaches, coffee, juice, water

2. Kolache Eating Contest. If you love kolaches, enter the contest to see if you will be the winner of eating two kolaches the fastest and receive a $15 Visa gift card. Registration is free but please register ahead of time of time.

3. Speaker Brian Vanicek’s presentation. “The Origin and Evolution of the Kolache” will give everyone insight on how this special Czech treat began.

4. Family Photo Contest. A display of your favorite family photos will provide the table decorations. Large, small, framed, unframed, all become eligible to be voted on as the “#1 Family Photo.” Just think of the bragging rights the winning photo will bring - not to mention the $15 Visa gift card!

5. “Heart of a Tin Trunk.” Many will remember this musical production from 2011. It is the story of an immigrant family who left the Fatherland, sailed across the Atlantic, and arrived at the Port of Galveston. After arriving at the Port, they made their way to Fay-

etteville. While this is the story of one Czech family - it is the story of all our Czech ancestors. Delightful, entertaining, and informative for all Czechs of all generations.

6. A Delicious Lunch. Grilled hamburger steak, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, salad, rolls, tea, and cake for dessert will be served.

7. Luba Ruzicka. She will bring an informative presentation on her life “As a Child Growing Up Under the Socialism and Communism Regime.” You will learn of her education and employment with its consequences before defecting to the USA.

8. A Special Opportunity Just For You! If you would like to give a 5- to 10-minute presentation on your family, this will be your open door. The presentation could be on the family photo displayed on the table. It could be on a family heirloom. It could be on “This is my family mystery” whereby you give the clues you have and let attendees know the answers you seek. If interested, please notify Charlene Hurta at cmhurta@earthlink.net by July 1, 2023, and a she will gladly add you to the program.

9. and 10. Caldwell High School Best of Show Essay Winners. Keyni Farrow and Wyatt Beasley will present their papers. Keyni’s paper, “Czech Culture in My Town” won first Place. Wyatt’s paper, “The Czech Way of Life” placed second.

11. Researcher. Danny Leshikar is helping more and more learn answers, or see photos they never knew existed, of their family through his 115,000-plus family files. He invites you to join him at his table, give him the family name you are researching, and he will do his

12. 13. and 14. A Beautiful Carnival Glass Bowl, an Immersion Blender, and a Meat Grinder. These items will be featured in a live auction. The proceeds from the auction will benefit the TCGS Building Fund.

15. Gift Shop. Always a delight and of interest is to see what new items Gift Shop Manager Nancy Machu has added. Maybe you are in need of a special gift for a “special someone” or a “treat” for your self. Unique gifts from the Czech Republic are among the treasures to be found.

16. TCGS Published Books. Robert Vitek will be available to walk you through the 25-plus books TCGS has published. Our books cover a wide range of areas to help in your family research. Czech Family Histories, Early Czech Schools, Czechs in Uniform, emigration records from Moravia to America from a number of specific Moravian villages, cookbooks, Lee County

Czechs, Pamatnik are but a few. Visit with Robert, and he will help you Czech them out!

17. Silent Auction Tables. We invite you to add a unique item or two. Chair Eileen Tabola Lyster displays the numerous items in a way which makes for easy silent bidding. Plus, oftentimes, she has first-hand knowledge of particular items up for bid. All proceeds will benefit the TCGS Building Fund.

18. Bingo is always fun. Will you be the first winner!

The preceding 18 reasons are why the TCGS Czech Family Reunion event will be a day filled with fun and excitement for all ages! The event begins at 9 a.m. Doors open at 8 a.m. on Saturday, July 8 at Caldwell Civic Center in Caldwell, Texas. Registration includes morning refreshments and lunch.
