Whale Tales The official newsletter of Hermanus Pre Primary School
Fourth Edition
Relieved and happy to be teaching without masks!
Hermanus Pre-Primary Foundation through learning, friendship and fun.
On the other hand, ask any person what the most frustrating situation currently is, and the answer will be: “Constant loadshedding.” One morning during loadshedding, Luke Esterhuizen, a three-year-old child in teacher Danica’s class asked: “Teacher, did Eskom take our batteries out again!” But - there is a little bit of light at the end of (at times) a very dark school, computers and telephone lines not working and other frustrating little issues making us all so aware of our dependence on electricity. The Governing Body has done intensive research on practical solutions and bought a very good system. Thank you, teachers, and parents, for being so patient during loadshedding. A BIG THANK YOU Coenie Groenewald from CCG Electrical. His patience to install the system to pure perfection and his willingness to work overtime to fix old systems were very impressive.
Thank you to AFRICO SOLAR for walking the extra mile to help our school.
Now Eskom “cannot take our batteries out again. Luke!”

Term 2 was filled with creativity and fun! We enjoyed learning about autumn and noticed all the changes around us. We collected leaves and made beautiful autumn art pictures filled with yellow, orange, brown and red. We also learned all about different houses and that, just like us, everyone’s houses are different and unique. We celebrated Easter together with our beautiful Easter Hat Parade and got a surprize visit from the Easter Bunny! We loved making yummy cookies for our mommies for Mother’s Day and enjoyed a fun filled end of term pyjama party! We are looking forward to term 3 and all the exciting things to come.

Pre-Graad R, Juffrou Mariska & Juffrou Elzaan Multi-Sensoriese Leergeleentheid Ons probeer ons temabesprekings en akitiwiteite elke dag so opwindend as moontlik maak sodat elke kind op ‘n speel-speel manier kan leer. Skool moet mos lekker wees!
Vra vragies soos “Wat beplan jy?”/”Hoekom kies jy daardie spesifieke kleur?”/”Wat sal gebeur as jy hierdie kleure meng?” Hoe kan my kind “process art”/proseskuns tuis aanpak? Begin stadig.
2 - 4 Years, Teacher Danica & Teacher Eslin Safety Officers Visit our school During the second term one of the exciting themes covered was “People in our community that keep us safe”. Of course nothing instills information like a practical activity and we were elated when the Overstrand’s Traffic Officers, Law Enforcement and their K-9 unit, Fire Department as well as the Hermanus Police accompanied by their Mascot Daantjie Kat made a visit to our school to educate us better about this. Our friends were elated getting to meet these community heroes and they sure made for a lasting impression. This is an important topic for our young friends as they learn what an emergency is and who to call and most importantly who to trust. We concentrate on memorizing our names, our Mommy & Daddy’s names and older friends practice remembering a parent’s telephone number too along with a physical address.
3 - 4 Jariges, Juffrou Hettie & Juffrou Willene Nies Atiesjoe! Atiesjoe! Aties! Hoor tog hoe ek nies. Atiesjoe! Atiesjoe! Aties!
Winter
Winterweer Winter is koud! brrrr-bibberkoud! Ek haal my jas gou uit die kas ek trek dit aan om uit te gaan.
2 - 4 Jariges, Juffrou Heidi & Juffrou Susan 'n Opwindende besoek!
It is amazing to see how children enjoy the theme discussions and to see how they role play it out in the class, and even during outside play. Look at the photos of teacher Danica’s little children. Future Doctors and nurses in the making!
Rhinorrhea, or a runny nose, happens when excess fluid drains from the nose. The fluid is mucus that is thin or thick, clear or opaque, and can be intermittent or constant. What causes excessive rhinorrhea? 🤧Colds and flus: Mucus from illnesses can fill the nasal cavity and cause temporary nasal obstruction. And yup, as soon as they shake one virus they can get a next one! 🤧Allergic rhinitis: 😦Mucus can result from allergies, or a nasal reaction to allergens such as pollen or pet dander. 🤧Non-allergic rhinitis: Mucus can result from a nasal reaction to an irritant like smoke or pollution, or the body’s reaction to other stimuli like cold weather or hot food. 🤧Infections of the sinuses/adenoids: The sinuses, can fill with infected mucus resulting in sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses). The adenoids, tissue found in the back of the nose (nasopharynx), in children can also get infected and result in a similar production of infected mucus. 🤧Large/swollen turbinates: The bones along the inside the nose (turbinates) can swell due to allergies or infections and result in nasal obstruction. checked out 🤧🤧🤧
🤧Large adenoids: When the tissue in the back of the nose in children is enlarged. 🤧Foreign body insertion: Often in younger children, the cause of obstruction may be the placement of an object in the nose, such as a peanut or a bead, causing obstruction, and foul smelling mucus drainage. 🤧Deviated nasal septum: The right and left sides of the nose are separated by a wall made of bone and cartilage called the nasal septum. At times, the septum can lean more to one side, causing obstruction on that side. This deformity can be present at birth or a result of trauma to the nose later in life. Why is rhinorrhea a concern? Often, rhinorrhea goes away on its own. When it persists, or lasts longer than 10 days, a runny nose can be a sign of other conditions, such as those listed above. If a high fever is present, consult your doctor. How is rhinorrhea treated? Once the source of the runny nose is found, treatment can include watchful waiting, washing the nose with nasal rinses, medications taken by mouth or sprayed into the nose, or even surgery. What are the long-term effects of rhinorrhea? Nasal irritation and nasal obstruction can impact a child’s quality of life if it is longstanding. An obstructed nasal passageway can affect sleep quality. Breathing from the nose is also important for facial development in childhood. Rarely, acute infections of the sinuses can lead to more serious infections if left untreated. Nasal obstruction and rhinorrhea may impact the health of the ears and hearing as the drainage pathway for the middle ear is through the back of the nose. Bottomline: If a little nose runs for longer than 10 days, get it checked out 🤧🤧🤧

Toddlers, Teacher Lindi & Teacher Geraldine Making popcorn
What could be more fun than experimenting with something that smells as nice as Popcorn! We had lots of fun during our winter indoor experiment. The little ones were truly amazed by the whole learning process which involved so many sensory aspects
Seeing, hearing, smelling, and tasting(which was the best part) Doing simple experiments with young children broadens their way of thinking. It gives them new ways to perceive their world and broaden their horizons!
Babaklas, Juffrou Janine, Agnetha, Chris-Mare' & Anzel The Importance of stimulation for a baby It is so important to stimulate your baby right from the day he or she is born. Ageappropriate stimulation will help to develop the babies’ senses and will enable them to reach their milestones even faster. Here are some ideas of what we do in our baby class and what you can do at home. Some interesting activities:

Babbel & Krabbel Aftercare/ Nasorg Meer as net 'n nasorg... Nou verdien almal ‘n lekker vakansie. Despite it being the three-week winter holiday, fun was had by all and believe me that includes the teachers and staff.
Babbel & Krabbel Aftercare/ Nasorg Meer as net 'n nasorg... Firstly, we were blessed with beautiful weather and the children could spend most of their days playing outside. Scooters, rollerblades, arts&crafts, balls, and slime are but a few of the activities that filled our playground with laughter. We ended off each week with a special event. Week one kicked off with a boeresport day where healthy competition and teamwork was the aim of the game after which some energy was restored by a delicious cake sale. That was followed by a braai day where the children enjoyed ‘braai broodjies’ and ‘melkkos’ lovingly prepared by our kitchen. An activity the children particularly enjoyed was the water balloon challenge where they had to see which team will end up with the most balloons still intact. Finally, we ended off the holiday with movies, popcorn, hot chocolate, and marshmallows in our pyjamas. My wish is that each child will be left with a special memory that they will cherish in their hearts for many years to come because that truly is what I am left with. So van daardie dag af was Hoy se Koppie pappa akkedis en mamma koggelmander se nuwe tuiste. En die kinders?? "They lived happily ever after!" Episode 3 volg eersdaags.
