April begin met April Fool’s Day en eindig met Freedom day. MMMmm. Hoe dan so?

(en kyk is vry) see, berg, fynbos, wingerde, boorde, net groen, groen, groen… waar die paaie so glad is soos ‘n politikus se tong.

Apologies for neglecting my English readers. Feel free to pop in for a translation of the above. ☺ Just a quick update on the Whale festival. Fabulous Fabio contacted me after reading my My Adapt or Cry article in the March issue. I now have a way better understanding of the organisational skills required for the Whale Festival. No easy task. I am happy to say that my friend, Monique Nortje will be setting up an entertainment venue to keep the kids happy to give Mom and Dad a breather. And for this to happpen she needs your co-operation. Watch this space for further information… Do you really still think there’s nothing to look forward to this year? Do you really want to go live somewhere else? Clearly you haven’t been to Amulet in a while. I’m waiting for you… Oops. Sounds a bit like a threat. See it as an invitation to experience something magical. It’s not corrupt, you don’t have to spend a fortune, you can come shop with your eyes, listen to our fabulous music and walk out feeling much better about yourself and this beautiful place we call home. To all the Mothers, including the expecting moms (Lindi Prinsloo comes to mind) may you be spoilt rotten on your special day... in fact I hope you get spoilt every day... Because we all deserve a little pretty – every day of our lives. Happy Mother’s Day to all the fabulous women out there. xxx

Hermanus local cheering on RCB

at the IPL in India. The Royal Challengers Bangalore (often abbreviated as RCB) are a franchise cricket team based in Bengaluru, Karnataka that plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL). One of the original eight teams in the IPL, the team has made two final appearances in the IPL, losing both (in 2009 to the Deccan Chargers and in 2011 to the Chennai Super Kings). The home ground of the Royal Challengers is the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. The team is currently captained by Virat Kohli and coached by Daniel Vettori and also features names like AB de Villiers, David Wiese, Chris Gayle, Shane Watson and includes Allan Donald on coaching staff. In the sport of cricket, this is the time of the year for glitz and glamour. The IPL season 9 just kicked off on the 9th of April 2016 in India. It's time to "playbold" and support Anna-Marie Groenewald as she cheers on the Royal Challengers Bangalore. She is currently working at the Auberge Burgundy Guesthouse in Hermanus as an assistant manageress. She has been a part time cheerleader for the IPL since 2012. In previous years she danced for the Mumbai Indians, last year started dancing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore which include South Africa's best batsman AB de Villiers and India's T20 captain, Virat Kohli. Her experience has been an rollercoaster, says Anna-Marie. "Anything can happen in India. We travel with the team all over India for seven weeks, it's not always easy to dance in a humid stadium on a small podium, with thousands of spectators watching your every move, but for me it's definitely worth it, specially if you are one of the biggest cricket fans,... like me." Keep an eye out for the latest IPL television commercial and matches on Super Sport 2.

Luxury, Art and Champagne at Benguela Cove During 2016 Hermanus FynArts Festival Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate is proud to announce its involvement in this year’s Hermanus FynArts Festival. The Hermanus FynArts, currently in its fourth year, is an initiative of Hermanus Tourism and is organised by a dedicated management team. Benguela Cove has been involved in FynArts for the past two years and has an even bigger calendar of events planned for this, their third year. The 2016 Hermanus FynArts Festival takes place from the 10th to the 19th of June and promises to delight all visitors. The list of events at Benguela Cove includes an art exhibition, pop-up champagne bar, gala dinner, cooking demonstration, French cheese and wine pairing and the results of their national art and design competition. In keeping with this year’s French theme, Benguela Cove and Bruno Paillard Champagne present a pop-up champagne bar at the Manor House between 10am and 7pm daily for the entire duration of the festival. Visitors can enjoy premium French champagne by the glass and delicious fresh shucked oysters as they marvel at the various fine art exhibitions on show. Maison Bruno Paillard sprang from its founder’s desire to create a champagne different from any other; extremely pure. A great champagne for Bruno Paillard is – above all – an “assemblage”, blending: of diverse crus, grape varieties and vintages. It is about the constant desire to capture the quintessential finesse and elegance which champagne can bring when it is served with love and care. The Bruno Paillard style is a marriage of elegance and complexity which is manifested as a light and smooth effervescence, a remarkable purity, a true freshness and a silky texture. This co-branded pop-up Champagne Bar event between Benguela Cove and Maison Bruno Paillard is very fitting as the luxurious French champagne is at home in the exquisite Benguela Cove Manor House. Visitors will be able to marvel at Jimmy Law and Janko de Beer’s exhibition Breaking Imagination: Deconstructing Countenance while sipping on a glass of Bruno Paillard Champagne and indulging in freshly shucked West Coast oysters. Visit www.benguelacove.co.za for additional festival event and booking information. Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate, R43, Bot River Lagoon, Hermanus, 7201, South Africa. Hennie Niemann Gallery – Onrus snr

H

ennie was born in 1941 and had a normal, quiet middle class childhood. He grew up quite independently as the only boy amongst four sisters. He always had an intense interest in art and books, and would spend hours as a child looking at framed art in shop windows, or look up different artworks in the books of the school’s library. As a child he experimented extensively with media available to him at the time, and sometimes used the back of a cereal box to draw on. He also showed a love for sport and was at age twelve the youngest entrant up to that date of the well-known Naval Hill Race. Hennie already painted in primary school, and earned the nickname “Modderpotjies”. This was a result of his friends usually finding him working on a painting, surrounded by containers of turpentine, linseed oil, and brushes, and it sometimes took a bit of convincing to get him to join them to play games outside. He qualified as a teacher in 1964 and after 19 years of teaching decided to move to Onrus to pursue a full time career as an artist. He shared

a lengthy correspondence with Gregoire Boonzaier who showed an interest in Hennie and his art for quite a period, and it was ultimately Gregoire’s encouragement that led to him moving to Onrus, and becoming Gregoire’s neighbour and painting partner. Side by side they would paint trees, scenery and still life paintings together, and to this day Gregoire’s influence is noticeable in some of Hennie’s works. Early in his career Hennie studied Pieter Wenning and of course Gregoire Boonzaier, and later discovered the French Impressionists, like Monet, Vuillard, and shortly after that, the Flemish Expressionists like Constant Permeke, and Gustaaf de Smet, they all had had a great impact on his life. As a young adult Hennie attended retrospective exhibitions abroad, for instance artists like Soutine, Degas, Van Gogh, Rouault, Bonnard, Seurat, Picasso to name a few. Later on, German expressionism also became one of his favourite art movements like Max Pe-

Father Claerhout also made a huge impact on him, and expressionism became a style that he became associated with. During Hennie’s time as a teacher at Tweespruit Agricultural School, he became very good friends with Father Claerhout. His generous attitude towards others, and his humble demeanour made a great impression on Hennie, and it guides his life to this day. "Why did we become blind? I don't know, perhaps one day we'll find out.

An exhibition by Paul Kneen

Do you want me to tell you what I think? Yes, do. I don't think we did go blind, I think we are blind. Blind but seeing. Blind people who can see, but do not see." Jose Saramago

Inspired by everyday logos, icons and world events at large, artist Paul Kneen adopts and adapts signs in our contemporary world to expose the troubling connections between them. He dissects the many levels of social stratification, while intertwining strands that explore everything from the world of politics to the powerhouse of religion. Kneen shows us how our own consumerism and greed are being fed by the power-hungry elite. His work manages to maintain a sharp sense of humour, yet still exposes the dangers of a warped collective consciousness. Influenced by pop culture and street art from all over the world, Kneen has used the essence of these art forms as a starting point to express his view on the current situation of the world. Refusing to be bound to one particular art from, he directly links his choice of medium to his subject matter. In this exhibition he showcases his wide range of artistic talent using traditional gold leaf techniques as well as more modern practices such as acrylics, screen printing and hand cut stencils. The process of screen printing became the perfect choice for his work on canned hunting, which is aptly titled Canned Hell. In the same way Andy Warhol used it to express his opinions of over-commercialisation and production, Kneens uses the medium to convey the 'production' of lions for slaughter. His Fools Gold series examines the eradication of Africa's wildlife due to poaching. Reality cheque - Louis Vuitton edition Kneen uses the traditional technique of gold leaf featured in many classic paintings to highlight the dire situation and the parts of each animal being hunted. "The idea that future generations could only see certain species in books one day is frightening," he says, "It's the pointless extermination of wildlife, among others, to fuel greed and feed a commercial demand."

Canned Hell

Another of his works, fittingly titled Reality Cheque, looks at the divide between rich and poor, and the unparalled desires of different socio economic classes. This is the first solo show in South Africa by UK born artist Paul Kneen who has made South Africa his home for the past six years. Having gained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Sheffield University in South Yorkshire, he and his wife have settled in Hermanus where he paints full time. Dystopia was conceived through his frustration over the social and political injustices in the world. Kneen hopes his work will incite discussion and provoke questions about the themes he addresses. Events affecting the globe at large are his stimulus and Africa his canvas. “As an artist, I feel it is my social responsibility to raise awareness on issues, no matter how awkward or uncomfortable the topic. For me, the essence of visual art is getting a message across to the person viewing the piece of work, without a word having to be spoken," he explains. This extensive show features over 40 original pieces and is most certainly one for the diary.

Dystopia will be showing at The Rossouw Modern SPACE Gallery in Hermanus with the opening night on Friday 6th May at 5.30pm. For more information regarding this event contact Jozua Rossouw 028 313 2222 or email info@rossouwmodern.com SPLASH 13

The aging FACE Considering the face from an anatomical point of view, creates a very interesting story when one studies the changes that happen as we age.

SIGNS OF FACIAL AGING

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SKIN?

As we age, one develops thinner dryer skin, which is less elastic and more likely to wrinkle or sag. There is loss of collagen. This collagen loss is a key factor in the aging process. As skin ages, the middle layer of skin (dermis) thins which reduces the skin’s ability to retain elasticity (from elastin) and moisture (from hyaluronic acid/filler gel). The skin thus becomes: • Dryer • Less elastic • Less supple • Thinner (volume loss) Treatment options for the aging skin. • Resurfacing Options— are used to modify the surface of the skin. They correct the effects of aging due to sun damage, including fine lines, irregular pigmentation and blemishes. Common resurfacing techniques include: – Chemical peels and laser resurfacing. • Collagen Induction Therapies- As you age, it is important to replace the collagen your body loses. Collagen stimulating treatments such as Derma pen (Skin Needling) or Fraxel/ Fractionated Laser can stimulate new collagen growth. The newly-produced collagen provides a structural framework to hold hyaluronic acid and elastin and helps restore the dermis. Leaving your skin tighter, firmer, refreshed and clearer. • Silhouette Lift – This one-stitch facelift can lift up the sagging skin around the jowl and neck area, and also stimulate collagen over a period of time, improving the tightening and firming of skin. What happens to the FAT pads? A youthful look depends on having the right amount of facial fat in the right places. With aging, redistribution, accumulation, and atrophy of fat lead to facial volume loss. Some areas lose fat. Examples are the forehead and cheeks. Other areas gain fat. Examples are the mouth and jaw. Modification of the fat pads leads to contour deficiencies. This can be seen classically if one looks at the jawline of a teenager versus the jawline of a 50 year old. The older of the two, would usually show jowls and loss of a smooth sleek jaw line. In addition, the areas of fat tend to become farther apart. Instead of a smooth, almost continuous layer, the fat pads appear as separate structures. If one smiles, one notices the fat pads shift up to form rounded rosy cheeks. As one relaxes, the fat slides downwards, leaving a concavity in the mid cheek area. Treatment Options to replace Volume Loss in the Aging face: Injectables—Dermal Filler Injectables include a broad range of substances which are administered by injection. Their main usage is for the treatment of lines, wrinkles and folds, as well as hollowing and volume loss. By using Dermal fillers in the areas of the jaw line or cheek area; one is able to correct the volume loss which occurs with aging. Fillers are also used for fine lines and wrinkles in any area of the face, or in the hands to correct loss of volume. So from lined bony paws, to plumped and filled hands.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE BONE- STRUCTURE?

There is a significant loss of facial bone with age. Aging of the craniofacial skeleton may be due to changes in the relative dynamics of bone expansion and bone resorption. Bone resorption leads to biometric volume loss. So, just as hips are resorbed leading to osteoporosis; so too are the facial bones getting smaller and smaller. Thus the skin has nowhere to go except to form lines, wrinkles and folds. Without the structural support of bone, there are noticeable changes in the other layers of overlying soft tissue and skin. The treatment of bone volume loss To use various types of dermal fillers to essentially re-contour the bony scaffolding, so that the skin falls beautifully on the cheeks, mouth and upper face.

• Greater visibility of bony landmarks, lines and wrinkles • Prominence of transverse forehead lines • Nasolabial folds become more prominent • Hollowing of the mid-face (loose skin) • Changes in the area around the mouth (vertical wrinkles, lip thinning and flattening) • Development of prejowl depression (marionette lines) When developing a Treatment Plan, 1st begin with a facial assessment Facial Mapping With aging, the balance, proportions and symmetry of the face change. For example: • The lower face widens as the jowls form • The lower face shortens as bone is remodelled in the maxilla and mandible • The young face shows 1/3:2/3 ratio of upper lip to nose and lower lip to chin. With age, this ratio approaches 1:1 Each of the facial sections show different changes with age and are unique to each patient.

FACIAL ANTI-AGING MEDICINE: The goal is to achieve- The golden proportion

• Symmetry on both sides of the face • Smooth convex contours • Homogeneous skin tone and texture The transition between the anatomical regions of the face should be subtle and harmonious. At Refine we believe in subtle changes, leaving you feeling refreshed, rested and plumper in just the right areas. We don’t believe in changing your proportions dramatically. Have a complimentary consultation, decide on a treatment option and get your girlfriends asking you, if you have been on a holiday recently… shhhhtt… your Golden proportion is our secret.
