Inkleurterapie?

Amanda de Stadler (amandad@vva.atkv.org.za)

April –

The month

of Fools, Bunnies and Pretty

A

pril = April Fools’ Day. Easter. School holidays. My favourite month. Best weather. Many public holidays. (We’ll be open, don’t worry!) Bunnies galore.

When you are dead, you don’t know you are dead. It is difficult only for others…

It is the same when you are stupid. If your first reaction to the above was: Nah… I don’t get it, I suggest you look at the pretty pictures and move on… Sorry, I don’t know how that happened… I was planning to write a beautiful and deep, meaningful article… Instead I got side-tracked by Facebook, saw this pearl of wisdom and now I’m back to my frivolous irreverent old self. My apologies – in advance - lest I offend anyone. I don’t do ugly and I don’t do fools. And as I write this my husband warns me that I mustn’t insult ugly or foolish people. Luckily there is no such thing as an ugly person. And fools are way too self-absorbed to realise that you are insulting them. No harm done. All people are beautiful, but some people like ugly stuff and some don’t. And that’s okay. I fall into the second category… I only stock pretty… Useless, some cynics would call it. Then you don’t get me or Amulet. Which is absolutely fine… Everyone is entitled to his opinion. So feel free to move swiftly along. It is rather astonishing how stupidity has survived throughout the centuries. One would think that survival of the fittest would also apply to the evolution of the human brain, but clearly not. Human beings have come up with the most amazing smart phones, tablets, cars that can park themselves… and yet this most sophisticated creature on earth can ask questions like: ‘What do you do with this?’ as the person holds up a notebook that says: Notebook. Or… holding up a fragile glass jar: ‘can this break?’ And then promptly drops it. Make no mistake, I have my own blonde moments on a regular basis… But when I’m behaving like an idiot and realise it, I tend to stop and remove myself from the scene of embarrassment. Quickly and surreptitiously, if possible. However, I seem to be the exception to the rule. Stupid can be tenacious. Brash and Insensitive are Stupid’s ugly sisters. George Carlin said “Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.” I have to admit I have no idea who Mr Carlin was but he made a powerful statement. We all saw the circus happening in Parliament. (Quite disturbing reality TV) I am constantly amazed, delighted and sometimes completely flabbergasted at the incredible stupidity and complete lack of manners of the human race. But hey, make no mistake, I love people, even the rude ones… they give me stuff to write about. Many a sitcom and even the odd Drama series are loosely based on people I have met. So careful what you say or do in front of me, you may just end up on TV! A woman storms into the shop: ‘Writing paper!’ she shouts at me. Wow, sounds like an emergency. I jump up from behind the counter. “I don’t have all day! Where is it?!” Shame, she looks seriously stressed. I rush towards my stash of writing paper and hastily show her what we have. Luckily quite an extensive range. ‘No, no I want to write a sympathy note!” And with this she shoves me out of the way heading out into the street. I too suddenly have an urge to write a sympathy note: I’d like to sympathise with the death of basic good manners. Soos julle weet was ek verlede jaar by Binnelanders (my stories maak so teen die einde van hierdie maand klaar op skerm). Ek is in ekstase… Ek het ‘n wonderlike mede-kreatiewe crazy genius by Binnelanders raakgeloop wat net so passievol is oor storie vertel soos ek. Sy kom toe kuier by my in Onrus.

Tel / Fax: 028 313 0359 4 Broad Street Hermanus, 7200

Intussen…. Sien julle in Mooi, mooier Amulet!

BODY

Spider webs on my legs…. Can varicose veins really vanish? Are there easy solutions for treating spider veins? According to Dr. Oz, there are varicose and spider vein solutions for everyone that can push back the clock and provide you with younger-looking, beautiful legs once again.

HOW ARE VARICOSE AND SPIDER VEINS TREATED? Sclerotherapy Sclerotherapy is the most common treatment for both spider veins and varicose veins. A liquid solution called a sclerosing agent is injected directly into the veins, causing irritation and inflammation. This makes the vein stick together and scar thus preventing blood flow in the vein. This process takes 6-8 weeks to complete. The procedure involves a series of tiny microinjections into the veins of each leg under direct vision. This treatment does not require anaesthesia and can be done in your doctor's office. You can return to normal activity right after treatment.

BEFORE

AFTER

Sclerotherapy Results – Spider Veins

Sclerotherapy by injection is a very effective method of treatment. You can expect 50-80% improvement with a single treatment and improved success after a course of between 2-5 treatments. “Too many of you are hiding behind long pants and skirts because you are ashamed of your varicose and spider veins, but that is going to stop today” According to Dr. Oz, varicose and spider veins are the result of a similar process that involves how well blood travels through the venous system from the lower legs back to the heart. The veins in the legs contain small one-way valves that allow the blood to flow up toward the heart. The purpose of these one-way valves is to prevent blood from draining back down the legs. However, over time with aging and stress on the body, those valves can become leaky and begin to allow some blood to drain back due to gravity. When this happens, the blood pools within the veins and bulges out as unsightly varicose veins. Spider veins have a similar problem where blood gets trapped, but in this case it involves the smaller blood vessels referred to as the capillary system that branches off from the larger veins in the legs.

WHAT FACTORS INCREASE MY RISK OF VARICOSE VEINS AND SPIDER VEINS? • Increasing age. As you get older, the valves in your veins may weaken and not work as well. • Medical history. Being born with weak vein valves increases your risk. Having family members with vein problems also increases your risk. • Hormonal changes. These occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. Taking birth control pills and other medicines containing estrogen and progesterone also may contribute to the forming of varicose or spider veins. • Pregnancy. During pregnancy, there is a huge increase in the amount of blood in the body. This can cause veins to enlarge. The growing uterus also puts pressure on the veins. • Obesity. Being overweight or obese can put extra pressure on your veins. This can lead to varicose veins. • Lack of movement. Sitting or standing for a long time may force your veins to work harder to pump blood to your heart. This may be a bigger problem if you sit with your legs bent or crossed. • Sun exposure. This can cause spider veins on the cheeks or nose of a fair-skinned person.

Possible side effects include: • Stinging, red and raised patches of skin, or bruises where the injection was made. These usually go away shortly after treatment. • Spots, brown lines, or groups of fine red blood vessels around the treated vein. These also usually go away shortly after treatment. • Lumps of blood that get trapped in vein and cause inflammation. This is not dangerous. You can relieve swelling by applying heat and taking aspirin. Your doctor can drain the trapped blood with a small pinprick at a follow-up visit. Surface laser treatments In some cases, laser treatments can effectively treat spider veins and smaller varicose veins. This technique sends very strong bursts of light through the skin onto the vein. This makes the vein slowly fade and disappear. Not all skin types and colours can be safely treated with lasers. No needles or incisions are used, but the heat from the laser can be quite painful. Cooling helps reduce the pain. Laser treatments last for 15 to 20 minutes. Generally, 2 to 5 treatments are needed to remove spider veins in the legs. Laser therapy usually isn’t effective for varicose veins larger than 3 mm (about a tenth of an inch). You can return to normal activity right after treatment. The new Palomar Laser has a built in cooling system that makes laser Vein removal super comfortable and very efficient. BEFORE AFTER Possible side effects of lasers include: • Redness or swelling of the skin right after the treatment that disappears within a few days • Discoloured skin that will disappear within 1 to 2 months • Burns and scars from poorly performed laser surgery, though this is rare

WHY DO VARICOSE VEINS AND SPIDER VEINS USUALLY APPEAR IN THE LEGS? Most varicose and spider veins appear in the legs due to the pressure of body weight, force of gravity, and task of carrying blood from the bottom of the body up to the heart. Compared with other veins in the body, leg veins have the toughest job of carrying blood back to the heart. They endure the most pressure. This pressure can be stronger than the one-way valves in the veins.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF VARICOSE VEINS?

Palomar Laser

As we are moving slowly towards the cooler months, it gives us an opportunity to make work of any unsightly veins on our legs, to bare beautiful legs in summer!

Varicose veins can often be seen on the skin. Some other common symptoms of varicose veins in the legs include: • Aching pain that may get worse after sitting or standing for a long time • Throbbing or cramping • Heaviness • Swelling • Rash that’s itchy or irritated • Darkening of the skin (in severe cases) • Restless legs

Mother’s Day Brunch Flapjacks with Cream and Berries Ingredients • • • • • • • • • •

2 eggs 5 tbsp sugar 1½ tbsp butter, melted 500ml cake flour 4 tsp baking powder ½ tsp salt 250ml cream 250ml milk 1 tsp vanilla extract Fresh berries and cherries

The best of breakfast and lunch!

M

other’s Day is fast approaching! Kids all over the world excitedly jump out of bed at the crack of dawn to whip up breakfast to spoil mom on Mother’s Day. Even if the toast is burnt, the eggs are rubbery and the coffee is weak… just the fact that her kids made it with love, makes it a Queen’s breakfast in her eyes. Mothers are always up and about early – getting kids ready for school, packing lunches, making breakfast while quickly running the laundry machine! So instead of an early breakfast, why not let mom sleep in for once and awake to a hearty brunch instead. Brunch fits snugly between breakfast and lunch and the word itself is a combination of the two. Brunch offers so many

Method

• Beat the eggs, gradually adding the sugar. • Add half of the milk and the melted butter to the egg mixture. Mix well. • Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt, and add to the egg mixture. • Gradually mix in the remaining milk to form a smooth batter. • Drop spoonfuls of batter onto a heated greased nonstick pan. • Turn once the top is full of breaking air bubbles; cook on the other side until golden brown. • Whip the cream and vanilla extract until soft peaks form. • Serve the flapjacks with a dollop of cream and a generous handful of fresh berries.

The Origins of Brunch These days brunch is wildly popular on Mother’s Day with many restaurants fully booked. But where did the idea of a midmorning meal come from? ♦ History seems to suggest that it originated in England in the 1800s. Catholic churchgoers were required to fast before attending earlymorning Mass and after the church service sat down to a large, heavy midday meal which included lots of meat. This is where the traditional Sunday roast comes from. ♦ British writer, Guy Beringer, in 1895 started advocating for a lighter meal which included some breakfast options saying, “It puts you in a good temper, it makes you satisfied with yourself and your fellow beings. It sweeps away the worries and cobwebs of the week.” ♦ In addition, the idea caught on with Saturday late-night carousers who, while suffering the after-effects of heavy drinking, could get up later in the morning. ♦ Slowly the practice took root and to this day most brunch get-togethers tend to take place on a Sunday.

I

f somebody invites me to a trip or lunch in our beautiful Hemel–en–Aarde Valley, I am always more than willing to go.

Take the Camphill turn off, go past SA Forest Adventures and there in the heart We were welcomed by the team from Overstrand Training Institute (OTI) who started skills training in 2005. It was a nice warm day and we decided to sit outside. While we enjoyed something cold to drink. Debbie, co-founder and her new team Edwin and Angelo started telling us more about the Bush Diner and all the other training that they have on offer for the people in the Overstrand.

expansion into the farm provides opportunities for much more skills training; where they opened the Bush Diner. Chef Gary Hermansen former owner and chef of Fisherman’s Cottage, trains assistant chefs and runs cooking classes for fun, health They learn from hands-on experience in hospitality; front of house to the kitchen assistant where they learn how to make the best apple strudel in town. Our lovely lunch was prepared by them. Lunch was tender and very tasty chicken, rice, roast potatoes, vegetables and pumpkin ….sweet like my mother use to cook, served with a side salad for the table. The Bush Diner is currently three months old but caters for functions like small weddings, kiddie’s birthday parties, bachelor parties or team building, brainstorming weekends. Limited accommodation is available, so it is best to book early to avoid disappointment. They will do breakfast and lunch for such weekends. Their facilities include a beautiful open air theatre, which can also be used for functions, concerts and much more.

They also do Sunday lunch, bookings essential. I understand Chef Gary’s specialities are spit braai and seafood potjie and they look forward to requests. They will design a menu that’s perfect for your event.

Thank you guys for a very nice lunch at the Bush Diner, keep up the good work.

She the teaches photography on location to all skills levels of passionate photographers through thephotowalkers.com. Is Photography Art? In the early years of photography it was said that this new technique was ‘too literal to compete with works of art because it was unable to elevate the imagination.” The concept of this mechanical recording medium was rejected to such a point that it nearly died away. It was in the 1940’s that people started changing their minds and galleries started to sell photography as works of art. Up until then, it had only been sold through what were officially known as “PhotoGhettos”.

Just like art - photography is about seeing. It’s about choosing a subject matter, knowing the colour wheel, understanding light and composing an image. A great photographer does not need an expensive camera to capture a magnificent photograph. Most of the old masters used pigments from the earth to make their own paints. They too did not need the best tools to create their work. A good piece of art (a painting, a sculpture or a photograph) will entice you to look deeply and invite you to see more. It will stir an emotion in you through the story that it is telling. For me – it’s the silence that washes over someone when they look at a piece of art and are transformed into the image. That’s what classifies it as art. Leanne Dryburgh

Fire is a Friend of Fynbos

Whilst devastating runaway fires caused havoc in the Overberg area recently, conservationists welcome the effect on Fynbos as a blessing in disguise.

A

mazing new plants have appeared amongst the ashes within a few weeks as the seeds germinated. Conservationist Sean Privett is excited about the new life on the mountains.

“Mr Fynbos” Sean Privett recently held the audience spell bound at the Green House with a fascinating power point presentation on our unique Fynbos treasures, named “Diversity, Fire and Life.” It was arranged by Whale Coast Conservation and more than 100 people attended. With reference to the wide-spread mountain fires between Hawston and Sandbaai, as well as the Betty’s Bay area, Privett said this was actually great news for the conservation of Fynbos. He explained the crucial role which fire plays in reviving seeds which may have been embedded for years, waiting for the trigger of fire, smoke and heat to initiate their growth. Most Fynbos species are dependent on fire for regeneration and unique treasures like the delicate Marsh Rose or Gladiolus Overbergensis. Sean Privett is an internationally renowned guide to the Fynbos with a Masters degree in Botany and an enormous passion for the conservation of Fynbos. He has received several international Conservancy and Ecotourism awards. He is the Conservation manager of Grootbos Nature Reserve near Gansbaai and has developed a popular three day Fynbos Trail to promote ecotourim and enhance awareness of our marvellous Floral Kingdom. More information is available on the websites www.fynboshub. co.za, www.fynbostrail.co.za, and www.walkerbaytrails. co.za. The trails include forests with ancient trees more than a thousand years old, part of the coast line of the Overstrand, and the diverse Fynbos rich area between Stanford and Gansbaai. More than 500 hikers participated during the last year. Their ages varied between 8 and 80 years old, and included local and international eco-tourists. Our Floral Kingdom in the Overberg area consists of 785 plant species, of which 68 are cause for conservation concerns. 117 bird species are to be found in this area, and Privett explained the interaction between the pollination of the Pin Cushion Protea and the Sugar bird. Even the striped field mouse plays a role in fynbos pollination. Looking at the bigger picture, Privett explained that South Africa is one of only 17 Mega diversity countries in the world, and it contains three global threatened biodiversity hotspots. The Cape Floral Kingdom boasts with over 9250 species in an area of 90 000 square kilometres, the largest per square kilometer in the world! An alarmingly high percentage is endemic Red Data which raises conservation concerns. “We have a ridiculously high diversity of plants,” said Privett. “Every piece of Renosterveld and Fynbos in the Western Cape should be protected, but at the same time we have to maintain a balance between conservation on the one hand and development and job creation on the other hand. A solution is to create jobs through ecotourism, such as the “Growing the Future Project” whose trainees provide fresh produce along the Fynbos hiking trail.” Sean Privett and Heiner Lutzeyer are co-authors of the book “Field Guide to the Flora of Grootbos Nature Reserve” – a precious coffee table book with beautiful photographs and fascinating descriptions of our own Floral Kingdom. Conservation was also the theme of a presentation on 17th March at the Green House by well-known conservation photographer Peter Chadwick. His passion is Wildlife conservation photography. The topic of the presentation was: “Conservation Photography and Conserving South Africa’s Seabirds”. As a dedicated conservationist, Peter Chadwick has 30 years of strategic and operational conservation experience in terrestrial and marine protected area management. This talk is therefore particularly relevant to our efforts to achieve the ideals of the Cape Whale Coast Hope Spot that was launched in December 2014. African Black Oystercatchers by Peter Chadwick.

He has worked within all of the major biomes in southern Africa as well as having provided expert conservation advice at a global level. His conservation and wildlife photography is a natural extension of his conservation work where he has numerous opportunities to capture photographs that showcase the beauty and complexity of the outdoors. Peter’s photography is internationally recognized, with this work appearing globally in a wide range of print and electronic media. Whale Coast Conservation’s Green House is setting an example of independent alternative energy generation. Whilst area of the Overstrand are often left in the dark due to ESKOM power outages, the Green House is a shining light without the help of ESKOM, using its own off-the-grid resources. The Green House is located on the R43 close to Vermont, and is renowned for its enlightened independent electricity generation. At the start of a recent public meeting the management team of WCC was applauded for their pro-active foresight in ensuring self-generated power provision. Communications manager Dr Anina Lee announced that WCC offers a service to assess the needs of any person or business to ensure efficient power generation. They do not profit from the sale of the products. More information on www.whalecoastconservation.org.za.
