ine Village is once again proud to host the 17th Hermanus Wine and Food Festival, one of South Africa’ s Top 10 Wine Festivals. This is a celebration of great wines from the Elgin to Elim region. It is a true country festival where you will experience more than 300 impressive wines. The Elgin to Elim region, from Ataraxia to Zoetendal, encompasses a wine region full of wine gems. Present will be giants in the wine industry such as Hamilton Russell, Newton Johnson, Oak Valley, Creation and Domaine des Dieux. In the Food Marquee, our local chefs, cooks and yummy food creators will take you on a culinary experience. Specialities of our region include lip smacking snacks to gourmet meals on the go. The Professors and Gypsy Jones will keep you entertained with their rich sounds. The Festival promises to be a delectable journey in the presence of great music, friends and wine.
Entrance to the Food Marquee is free whilst entrance to the Wine Tent, where you can taste more than 300 wines, is R120 per person. This includes a wine glass and a wine guide on all of the producers. As always, children are more than welcome and will be entertained in the special activity centre where they can play and partake in activities for free while you explore the offerings on show. The Hermanus Wine and Food Festival promises to be a wine experience where you will meet new friends, discover new wines and find that whales are not the only reason for people visiting Hermanus. Savour local flavours at the Hermanus Wine and Food Festival 2014! All the wines will be available for purchase at cellar door prices. Diarise 8, 9 and 10 August 2014. Lees gee jou vlerke! Koop-ʼn-Afrikaanse-boekdag op 14 Augustus
E
Kontak die Vriende van Afrikaans gerus by vvafr@sun. ac.za of by 021 808 3744/5. Ons hoor graag van jou. Mooi loop! Amanda de Stadler

" If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman." For clues to win tickets to these festivals, join us on Facebook and Twitter and listen to WhaleCoast 96FM. You can also win tickets to a micro-brewery festival in Robertson, see page 13 for details. On page 7 Dr Maarten van Dalsen gives us the 10 best things you can do for your pet. Refine is tells us all about the latest facial peel technology on page 8 and it is not as scary as you might think. Goozi introduces us to induction cooking on page 10, a new staple appliance in any Overberg kitchen! Check out the shopping opportunities in Dirkie Uys Street on page 21. So, whether it is at the Kalfiefees, with a glass of wine or a small celebration in your kitchen, here is a toast to rays of sunshine peering out from behind the heavy winter clouds and to the promise of long, lazy days.

Bederf jouself. Loop kyk karre, of gaan speel gholf of leer hekel as jy daarna voel. Of, kom sê hallo vir my in my happy plek. Maar, maak jou reg vir tonne mooi goeters, lieflike musiek, blomme… and all things nice. Nes ons meisies daarvan hou.

kom in. ‘ Nee ek kyk net liefie.’ Mans verstaan nie van ‘net kyk’ nie. Behalwe as dit by karre, power tools en flat screen TV’s kom. We’ve come a long way, baby. Alhoewel ek begin dink Stef is eintlik ʼn undercover Suid-Afrikaner. Hy het my van my voete af gecharm. Want, ek’s mos ʼn vrou, sien. Selfs ʼn song daaroor geskryf.

Al is ek ʼn vrou. Vrouens is wonderlike wesens. Hoor jy Oom, jy wat so skepties voor my pienk winkeltjie staan. Kom gerus in, en vergaap jou. Ek sien dit elke dag in Amulet. Man en vrou

Feed your dog twice daily, especially larger breeds. This can prevent serious health problems. For cats, some prefer nibbling all day, but others must have strict measured feeding to prevent weight problems. Keep a check on weight. Most vets have walk-on scales, making it easy to monitor your pet’s weight. An increase or decrease in weight could be a sign of health problems. Spay and neuter your pet. It will keep your pet healthy and reduce costly health problems. It also has the benefit of reducing aggression and wandering which will keep your pet safe. acids. I could not believe that this could, in any way, be part of a beauty routine. And yet, the chemical peel has taken the world by storm and is one of the most popular skin treatments today.
Since the days of ancient Egypt, people have been using chemo-exfoliation methods, also known as chemical peeling, to rejuvenate skin. The original chemoexfoliant was lactic acid, an active ingredient of sour milk, which was used topically as part of a skin regimen to rejuvenate the skin. “Cleopatra’s milk bath”. We now know these substances contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), which are active ingredients responsible for skin exfoliation. We mostly use glycolic acid, derived from sugar cane juice, lactic acid, from sour milk and citric acid from lemons, as well as tomato juice. A peel represents accelerated exfoliation or skin regeneration which is induced by acids which cause epidermis, strengthening of collagen, reorganisation of structural elements and an increase in healthy dermal volume. The result is an improved clinical appearance of the skin.

period of skin regeneration cycle. As above.
Enter Skin Tech which has recently launched extremely safe, effective skin rejuvenation products and procedures to the South African market. Noteworthy, is that the peels were developed in Spain which has similar sun exposure and climate to South Africa. Peel solutions have been developed by a doctor turned scientist who is married to a dermatologist. This must be the secret recipe to their success. Peeling solutions, such as the world renowned Easy TCA; is considered the safest, most effective and the easy to use TCA. This peel is known as the new-generation formulation for deep surgery and dermatology worldwide; promising the unique concept of deep peeling which allows
In order to make sure your facial is more than a just a relaxing experience, an evaluation of the patient by the clinician/therapist is necessary to determine the appropriate treatment. This assessment is based on a goal orientated skin assessment, taking into account the skin type of the individual, pathology or needs of the skin. “Medical facials” also known as peels, are outcomesdriven-treatments. Is your skin fair or dark (high risk of pigmentation); do you need or, do you suffer from adult or teenage acne and need to address acne scars and pimples (pustules)? Some people have red broken veins others have sun spots and photo (sun-induced) pigmentation. One looks at skin thickness, oiliness, cigarette or alcohol induced damage. One can now understand why a therapist or doctor needs to be experienced in skin treatments to be able to choose the appropriate peel to suit your skin. To offer one type of peel is doing the good candidate for a peel and your physician/therapist will decide whether you would With milder peels, the solution is applied to the face and allowed to dry for between which will be monitored by the therapist throughout the procedure. Post- procedure, the patient can expect the sensation of sun-splashed glowing skin that will lead to peeling, invisible to the naked eye. After these milder peels, the patient is usually free to apply makeup and carry on with their day as per usual. Hence, the recently coined phrase of the “lunchtime peel”. No one will ever know you’ve had it done. Milder peels can be done using the “fruit” acids mentioned above. For deeper peels and more radical results we usually use trichloracetic acid (TCA). factor affecting the depth of the peel is the concentration of TCA used, as well as the number of layers applied.
needs. We thus ensure that we feed the skin the right ingredients during the regeneration process to ensure maximum results. Over the following 4 weeks, you can look forward to waking up every morning to skin which is younger, more than ever before. My handy tip would be that if you smoke or have generalised sun damaged and aging of your whole face, or have a skin condition mentioned above, then you are a great candidate for a peel. Peel back the hands of time.

Induction Cooking: Faster, cheaper, safer
Induction cooking has been around for decades, yet it is still a relatively new concept to most, with many avid cooks still preferring to opt for gas. Fans of induction cooking sing its praises and insist that once you switch to induction, everything else pales in comparison. One passionate convert summed it up as follows, “It was like I had driven a VW Beetle my whole life and someone suddenly handed me the keys to a Ferrari.”
Undoubtedly, induction cooking takes the cooking experience up a notch! For more information on the benefits of induction cooking, or to take a peek at Miele’s range of induction hobs or splurge on that brand new Le Creuset pot you’ve had your eye on, pop in at Goozi Kitchenshop!
So what’s the fuss all about? What is induction cooking? In a nutshell, heat is generated, not from the cooktop (the way electric and gas stoves work), but by the cooking vessel (pot or pan). This occurs when the coils underneath the surface of the cooktop produces an alternating electromagnetic current which activates the magnetic field in the cooking vessel ‘inducing’ heat directly in the base of the pot or pan. This means that: 1) Food is cooked much faster as the pan or pot heats up immediately. Most people are amazed at how fast food cooks when they first use an induction hob. A 5 liter pot of water, to cook pasta, will come to the boil in about half the time compared to a conventional electric or gas stove. With easy heat regulation, temperature control is highly accurate and when switched off, cooking stops immediately, reducing the risk of food burning or being overcooked. 2) It is kind to the environment as it is a lot more energy efficient. A shorter cooking time means less energy is used. Induction cooking cuts energy usage by approximately 30 - 50%. 3) It’s safer. Once a pot or pan is removed from the stove, the rings cool down immediately. Accidentally burning yourself from touching a plate that is still hot is now a thing of the past. 4) It’s easy to clean. Because the glass surface remains cool, splashes of oil, fat and food cannot bake and harden on the hob’s surface. This makes cleaning a breeze. Induction hobs require ferromagnetic (iron-rich magnetic) cookware such as cast iron and stainless steel. An easy way to check if your cookware is ferromagnetic is to hold a magnet to it and see if it draws it. LE CREUSET’s range of cast iron and stainless steel cookware is perfectly suited. Previously, induction cooking was the domain of restaurants and professional chefs, but has slowly made its way into the mainstream domestic market. MIELE manufacture top-end induction hobs with a range of features that includes pan-size sensor intelligence (the hob automatically sensors the size of the pan and adjusts accordingly), clear and concise controls, a ‘keep warm’ function that will keep food at serving temperature for up to two hours, and a ‘stop and go’ function which means that with a touch of a button the temperature is reduced to the lowest setting to prevent it from burning while you answer a telephone or the doorbell.

LOSS PROGRAMME
. . . .
How does this work? ► What is Reshape? Reshape is a weight loss program that primarily focus on fat loss. By using Lipolytic in combination with a very low calorie diet you will lose up to 30% more abnormally stored fat as opposed to a reduced calorie diet on its own. ► What is Lipolytic? Lipolytic is a natural product that will trigger lipolysis (breaking down fat) and blocking lipogenesis (absorbing energy into fat cells) if combined with a reduced calorie diet. ► How does it work? The combination of the medication and the specially formulated eating plan will trigger the body to tap into your abnormal fat stores as a source of energy. By tapping into your fat reserves you will release a substance called leptin that will trigger your satiety centre in your brain and give you a feeling of “fullness”. Lipolytic also increases your serotonin (happy hormone) levels thus increasing your mood. The end result being: • Weight Loss (fat loss) • increased energy levels • Decreased hunger • Increased in mood
LOOK OUT FOR OUR WINTER WORKWEAR !
► Can anyone do the program? Because it’s a natural product it is safe and has no side effects. However you have to see your doctor to rule out any medical cause for your weight problem.

PLASH MAGAZINE was invited to have lunch at the new Simply Asia restaurant in Hermanus at the newly opened Carriages centre. Simply Asia Hermanus will turn your dinners into a new taste experience and take you on a journey through the tastes and aromas of Thailand. Many Thai dishes contain ginger or a variation of ginger, which has been proven to contain many medicinal benefits, and it is especially great during our cold South African winters. Research also shows that ginger helps tackle pain and nausea, with excellent anti-inflammatory benefits, making Thai food the marriage of flavour and therapy. Most of Simply Asia’s dishes can be ordered ‘mild’, ‘medium’ or ‘hot’, depending on you or your personal preferences. We were treated to a wonderful starter platter: Two different types of spring rolls and the most amazing sweet corn cakes. • Po-Pia Je (101) vegetable springs rolls served with a sweet and sticky plum sauce • Po-Pia Gai (107) chicken spring rolls filled with tender chicken and vegetables, and served with a sweet chilli sauce • Taud-Man Khao-Phod (103) sweet corn cakes which are chewy clusters of sweet corn served with a sweet chilli sauce. Our next array of treats were four dishes that would tickle anyone’s taste buds. • Linguine Phad Tom Yum (622) (Tom Yum Prawn Linguine) Prawns stir-fried with mushroom, lemon grass, spring onion, onion, fresh garlic and tomato in roasted chilli and Tom Yum pastes. The prawns were cooked to perfection, with the lemongrass and spring onion to add that extra bit of zing. This was a winner which everyone at the table enjoyed. • Ped Raad Nam Makham Prik Phao (267) (Roasted Chilli Tamarind Duck). Roasted duck lightly dusted with tempura flour, fried, sliced and topped with a sweet roasted chilli tamarind sauce with broccoli, celery, mushrooms and a portion of fragrant Jasmine rice. We were surprised that this duck dish was not only our favorite, but also the newest addition to the menu. We will definitely be back for this one. • Phad-Mee Phuket Thaley (614) (Phuket Noodle) Prawns and calamari stir-fried with bean sprouts, spring onions, peppers, coriander, egg and fried garlic tossed with yellow noodles in a mix of roasted chilli paste and stir-fry sauce. This dish was spicy, but nothing you cannot handle. The calamari was cooked to perfection and the sprouts were a fresh twist to the dish. • Geang Butternut (Butternut Curry) (315) The butternut curry was full of flavour and it is served with bamboo sprouts and jasmine rice.

t’s difficult to find a business with a name and slogan which really tells you the full story. The next time when you are bored and already started to play around with your new smart-phone, try to find the panoramic setting on your phone’s camera options and take some pictures. You will find out that you can fit in a lot of detail in one picture. Now that’s exactly how we felt when we arrived at Panorama Restaurant near Franskraal. This beautiful farm restaurant has some of the most scenic views of the Atlantic Ocean, together with some beautiful trees and plants; it really is nature’s heaven. To be honest the only thing that compares with our love for nature, is good food. SPLASH MAGAZINE was invited by the Panorama team to have lunch at their restaurant, to experience the splendour for ourselves. We were greeted by Hencia & Jessica who offered us something to drink after she showed us to our table. We decided that half-sunny days in the winter should be a small celebration and everybody ordered something off the cocktail menu. For starters we had a massive seafood platter with mussels in a heavenly creamy white sauce, prawns, calamari, potato wedges and freshly baked bread served with tartar sauce, lemon and garlic butter and a chilli sauce. We all ordered something different off the well-priced menu, to truly see what the food is like. I ordered the chicken cordon bleu which was homemade and perfectly cooked. It was a big portion with a lot of cheese sauce, just how I like it. Armand said that if he had his credit card with him, he would’ve ordered another steak. The steaks were well matured, soft and juicy. Karin’s pork-ribs fell off the bones as she tried to eat it. Luckily Peter was there to help her to finish the big portion. The line fish of the day was in-season yellowtail. With a stunning sea view Peter could not resist this oceanic treat. By dessert, we all actually had enough to eat, but I could not resist a piece of fresh home-baked chocolate cake. I will go back if it’s only for the cake and the surroundings. The jumping castle, jungle gym and swimming pool makes Panorama one of the best family restaurants in the Overberg region. Nature lovers will find Panorama’s 4 x 4 routes, mountain bike and hiking trails one of the most spectacular routes the Overberg has to offer. These routes take you through over 800 species of pristine fynbos. With more than 120 bird species known to the area this is also a bird lover’s paradise. South Africa’s landscapes are as varied and wonderful as the people themselves. I just want take this opportunity to thank Hencia and Jessica for sharing this family farm with us and for their hospitality and great food.

dryfhout-grys. En, ons onthou ʼn vakansie by die see in ʼn huisie, waar alles so eenvoudig was.

Hermanus Kennels
and Grooming Parlour
H
ermanus Kennels and Grooming Parlour started in 1992 as Pets Haven, when Wendy and her husband Gert came to Hermanus after having a grooming parlour in Fish Hoek for 5 years. In 1995 they leased the ground where they are presently situated, from the Animal Welfare Society, and built the building which is now known as Hermanus Kennels and Grooming Parlour. Wendy is presently a tenant of the Animal Welfare Society and has been so all these years. In 1996 they achieved a first for Hermanus, and in fact the Western Cape, when they were certified as a member of the Pet Boarding Association of South Africa. The concept of boarding kennels and a grooming parlour under one roof was an exciting and fulfilling venture. Pets, including dogs, cats, birds, rabbits and even a pet sheep, have been looked after for more than 20 years by Wendy and her dedicated an capable team, with passion and enthusiasm. Ella, Stelonica, Julia, Princess, Brenda and Michelle have collectively been with Wendy for 55 Years. Wendy and Gert worked closely with the Animal Welfare Society from the beginning, helping them house and rehome many dogs, puppies, cats and kittens.
Gert was chairman of the Animal Welfare Society for a few years before his passing in 2000. He was a well-known figure in town, with Pedro, his Amazon green parrot, on his shoulder. The kennels consist of 22 outdoor kennels, with off floor and undercover sleeping areas and a large area to run. Approximately 30 dogs can be accommodated indoors, with heating and access to their own garden. There are 3 large exercise gardens where all the dogs go two to four times a day to run and play individually and under supervision. Hermanus Kennels caters for specialised diets and will also administer veterinary prescribed medication as instructed. Hermanus Kennels are open every day of the year from Monday – Fridays 08:00 – 17:00, Saturday 08:00 – 12:00 & 16:30 – 17:30, and on Sundays and public holidays 08:00 – 10:00 & 16:30 – 17:30. The open plan grooming parlour is a hive of activity offering specialised dipping of all breeds, lathing, dipping and nail clipping of all dogs. Clients are amazed that so much can be going on and yet all the dogs are calm and relaxed.
Hermanus Kennels and Grooming Parlour can be contacted on 028 312 2886 and 084 512 9584 and 082 964 3632 at all times. You can also check us out on Facebook.
