Are you training for a big cycle event? We are proud to announce that ex-professional South African cyclist Morne Bester from Pro Cycling Coaching working in close conjunction with our fitness team at Proactive Fitness can help you achieve better cycle specific goals on the road or on the trails by making you stronger & more efficient whilst teaching you the correct methods of training. Morne is based right here in Hermanus and you can find out more about him and his coaching methodology by browsing his website: www.procyclingcoaching. co.za Morne was an accomplished professional cyclist for 12 years and won big national races including: Cape Argus, SA Junior champ, SA Champs road and The Jock cycle classic 3 times (renowned as the hardest one day race in this country!). He has competed as a pro cyclist in over 40 countries word wide. He raced in some of the biggest race events in the world including the U23 World champs, the World Elite Time Trail Champs, the U23 Giro d'Italia (Giro Primavera), the Tour of Malaysia, the Milk Race in Ireland, the USA Pro Champs and many more. He also raced against the top pro's in the word and succeeded in getting podium places alongside them. Morne therefore has all the experience required to take any rider to the next level in his/her performance. He has himself been coached by the best European coaches in the world and learned from other top professional riders. Morne has won about 80% of the biggest races in South Africa which is no mean feat. To win all these big races you have to know your training very well right down to the last detail, to ensure that you are the strongest rider in the pro/elite racing group (bunch). Morne sees all of his Hermanus clients regularly at least once a week and spends time with them both on and off the bike, coaching, mentoring & motivating each and every one of them to achieve their personal best. After seeing someone for the day he emails them their individual training program for the week and monitors them to make sure that they do the right things for the week until he sees them again. He encourages strength work to concentrate on leg strength. He says that strength training is the secret to his and his clients’ success! All of his client’s results and their success stories are posted on his website. Morne also does online training and he has contact with many other clients all over South Africa and abroad, all of whom have achieved fantastic results cycling both on and off-road (mountain biking) If you want to take your cycle training and racing to the next level like so many other local cyclists have already done, why not treat yourself to some coaching sessions by booking a consultation with Morne? INVESTMENT

Strategy

in a Dynamically Changing World The Hermanus Investment Society met on 3rd August at the Marine Hotel. The subject was about investment strategy and how to invest in a low return, dynamically changing environment. Returns are important and the strategy has to be positioned to have a reasonable chance of working. Funds that can ride the storms and opportunities were discussed. Which funds and strategies have worked in the past? Upside and downside caused some active debate, especially the subject of risk.

A factor that decides whether we invest locally or offshore is the Rand. With the South African economy experiencing slow growth and not attracting investment as fast as we should, the Rand is under pressure. On top of that, many expect the US to start increasing interest rates, so the US Dollar is strong. What does this mean for us? That the Rand can still head weaker in coming years and that unless our investments do better than the Rand , we go nowhere fast. Here is a long term chart of the USDZAR and the JSE. It shows that the JSE has actually done little since 2007 in “real” USD terms, although in nominal terms it is up 38% form previous peaks. The Rand’s trend to getting weaker can persist, until SA gets its act together, or the USD weakens.

Come along to our meetings to find out what you can do to protect your investments and to take advantage of these megatrends. The speaker at the meeting held on 3rd August was Sandy le Roux who has 13 years of experience as Fund Manager. Sandy is with Counterpoint Private Capital from Cape Town, formerly from Personal Trust. He showed examples of positioning for superior returns in various market environments. The meeting was chaired by Janet Hugo CFP ®, of Sterling Private Wealth, Hermanus. She also went into what investors need and pros and cons of various funds. Events are designed to help the public gain critical investment-related knowledge. This information is not readily available elsewhere. The sessions are interactive. Typically short, an hour-and- ahalf, including questions and followed by wine tasting. The 14th September Hermanus Investment Society meeting will be about managing your own blue chip long term share portfolio. What criteria and principles can be used by a private investor wanting to decide what to invest in? Choosing from all the advice out there, can be difficult. With so many simple but powerful tools available to us today, there are lots of ways to add value yourself and you can find out more how to do it, if you don’t know already. The speaker will be Victor Hugo, director of Hugo Capital Asset Management. In October, the subject will be about Balanced Funds. How to choose them. Why and when they work. Pros and cons. Balanced Funds have delivered pleasing returns in recent years, but what about going forward? If you are interested in attending one of our meetings, please let us know. Email to marietjie@sterlingwealth.co.za or call us at 0861 888 987. The Hermanus Investment Society asks for a R100 donation per person towards costs. Any profits will be donated to local charities.

Extend Your Skin’s “Best Before” Date! “My skin was starting to show its ‘use-by’ date and long past its ‘sell-by date’, I needed to update my knowledge base on lasers and skin therapy. Years ago my dermatologist suggested laser therapy for my skin and I thought he had lost it. I had never heard of laser therapy for one’s face, and it sounded quite dangerous. In the science fiction movies, laser beams cut through everything, can destroy anything, burn things to ashes and I quite liked my face. Well, enough not to want to destroy it. Instead of destroying skin, laser treatment is gentle enough to rejuvenate the loss of elasticity of ageing skin and is great for stimulating new collagen production to plump up skin and improve one’s looks. Great! We were back in business and I was going to laser years off my chronological age."

Take years off your face with just one treatment.

The Palomar 1540nm Non- Ablative Fractionated Laser: One of the premier anti-ageing lasers is the Palomar Lux 1540, a non-ablative erbium laser. This laser delivers light to the skin through an array of high precision micro-beams that penetrate the skin deep into the dermis. Creating narrow, deep columns of skin coagulation, surrounded by healthy, untreated skin. This causes the skin to repair itself by replacing old, sun damaged skin with new, younger skin. Since the Lux 1540 delivers fractionated light, the treatments are safer and produce consistent results. The downtime to these treatments are like mild sunburn for a couple of days. The Palomar Max G- Optical pulsed light: For the treatment of undesirable pigmentation on face, neck, chest, and body, also treating rosacea, broken capillaries and veins. OPL treatments achieves a more youthful appearance as a result of sun damage. With longer wavelengths these treatments delivers great results with minimal pain or downtime.

Results one month later with IPL and an Alpha peel

One Treatment- One month later

Facial wrinkles are seen by many as an inevitable part of the aging process. However, many lifestyle factors are responsible for people developing wrinkles prematurely and more severely than their genetics would otherwise dictate. Smoking and excessive UV exposure--sunbathing-are the prime culprits. Botox is one of the first things people think of when considering wrinkle reduction. However, Botox is not suitable for all wrinkles and not the best option for others.

A powerful treAtment option for All kinds of wrinkles. Collagen and elastin make up the support structure in our skin. As we age that support structure weakens and wrinkles form. Laser wrinkle treatment uses powerful laser technology to renew the skin by stimulating collagen and elastin production. It works fast to minimize wrinkles and improve the skin on your neck and cheeks , smooth away smokers lines around your mouth, and even reduce wrinkles and crow's feet around your eyes.

An eAsier wrinkle treAtment thAn surgery. Unlike surgical face-lifts that require long recovery times, laser wrinkle treatment is a nonsurgical alternative that has less downtime allowing you to recover in as little as a few days with minimal discomfort or side effects.

nAturAl looking results thAt you'll be proud to show off. Laser wrinkle treatment smooth’s your skin without changing your looks. You look like yourself but with more youthful looking skin - and without the facial changes and side effects that can be associated with surgical facelifts or injections.

CliniCAl AppliCAtions Scientists have discovered that light and laser energy can be used to heat deeper layers of the skin. This procedure activates fibroblasts that stimulate the formation of new collagen as well as tightening existing collagen over time.

A powerful CombinAtion: Background: A recent study compared facial rejuvenation with a combined treatment using an optimized pulsed light (OPL) source followed by a non-ablative, fractional 1540nm laser to treatment with the laser alone. Conclusion: Facial rejuvenation combining 1540nm laser and OPL was found to be a safe and effective treatment for photoaging that provides enhanced cosmetic results in a shorter time-course for pigment improvement than the 1540nm laser alone.

but there’s more! In addition to these treatments, mild peeling can be done to gently polish the skin to improve texture, whilst a radiofrequency (Tripollar) procedure tightens sagging skin. The combination of Rejuvenation therapies treats all three layers of the skin, each treatment has synergistic rejuvenating effects on the whole face and neck. It increases the amount of collagen in the dermis which shrinks pores, tightens sagging skin and retextures that dull and sallow complexion. Although the full effect will take about three months to be fully appreciated, each treatment will have a cumulative beneficial effect and skin will continue to improve over the next nine months. By adding Dermal Fillers to add lost volume and Botox to relax those frown muscles one can look 10 years younger in one treatment! This great combination of treatments is tailored to each person’s needs. So Book your complimentary consultation today! It’s a great treat for your skin and a marvelous boost for your self-image! It’s always Tea-time W

ith its ancient history, there is a lot of mystique and not a little bit of snobbery around making the perfect cup of tea. Purists swear by using top-notch loose-leaf tea blends brewed at specific temperatures for just-so many minutes. And we’ve all been intimidated by the vexed question of whether we should pour the milk into the teacup before or after the tea… (The answer is, unless you are using extremely delicate, fine bone china teacups, it really doesn’t matter – traditionally, milk was added first to protect the teacups from the sudden heat of the tea and it doesn’t affect the flavour at all.) But unlike the experts, you don’t have to obsess about the terroirs of the tea in order to enjoy the perfect cuppa – we bring you the simple solutions to making it just right every time: Did you know, right here in South Africa we grow what is now considered, one of the most exotic teas worldwide? It is a Tisani or herbal tea and I am referring to Aspalathus linear or Rooibos tea. Not only is it delicious both black or with a little warm milk and honey, it is considered a healthy alternative to black tea. Rooibos tea does not contain caffeine and has low tannin levels compared to black tea or green tea and is packed with polyphenols - antioxidants - with numerous reported health benefits.

Here are some tips for brewing a perfect cuppa every time: 1. Use good quality loose leaves or teabags. 2. Store your tea in a well-sealed canister as it will otherwise absorb kitchen smells and moisture. 3. Allow 1 teabag or 1 rounded teaspoon of tea per person, plus 1 “for the pot”. 4. Always use freshly drawn boiling water and never re-boil the kettle. (Well oxygenated water makes a real difference to the flavour of your tea; each time the water boils, the amount of oxygen it holds is reduced.) 5. Catch the water just as it is about to come to the boil for the very best flavour.

GRAND TEAPOT Made of our fully enamelled, easy-to-clean stoneware, our striking Grand Teapot has a carefully designed anti-drip spout plus a locking lid with a steam hole to ensure spillage is a thing of the past. It serves four perfect cups of tea, and has a large handle that makes pouring effortless even when the pot is full. The tall design is suitable for serving either tea or coffee, and looks gorgeous whether you’re using it at the breakfast table or for afternoon tea.

6. Swirl a small amount of boiling water in the teapot to heat it first. 7. Allow teabags to brew for up to 3 minutes and steep loose-leaf tea for about 7 minutes. 8. If you like your cup strong, don’t brew it for longer – use more tea. Extending the brewing time makes the tea taste bitter and stewed. Unless you are using Rooibos tea, which becomes naturally sweeter the longer you brew it.

TIME FOR TEA Now you know how to brew the perfect cup of tea, treat yourself to all our Le Creuset tea-making essentials. We’ve got all your requirements covered with our superior enamel-coated stoneware range that is as gorgeous as it is practical.

CLASSIC TEAPOT Our charming Classic Teapot makes every teatime a special occasion. The large, easy-grip handle remains cold to the touch, making lifting and pouring effortless, while the locking lid with a steam hole and carefully designed anti-drip spout ensure a spill-free experience. Our hard-wearing enamelled stoneware keeps the tea hot for longer and is designed to resist staining, chipping and cracking, plus it will not absorb odours or flavours. Want dis lekker. En ek mag maar.

So iets. Ek hoor net hoe skree Percy oor die foon: Yes, yes, we’ll take it!

So, versprei hierdie nuus asseblief so wyd as moontlik en ondersteun ons Afrikaanse boekbedryf!

Die ATKV wil jóú liedjie hoor!

L

Daphne se liedjie, Die song wil my nie los nie, is gekies as die amptelike temalied van vanjaar se Liedjieslypskoolprojek, wat by AtKV-goudini Spa aangebied is.

60 min Ma 10 Aug 10:00 NG gemeemtesaal, Onrusrivier R 45

This will mean that there are going to be a lot of similarities, but there are going to be differences in the important key positions. Another assumption that we will be making is that all the players are injury free and that we have seen them playing in the recent past.

S

As for the other two teams, the following: We must take the fundemental principles of selection into consideration. I will list them in sequence of positions and then we can evaluate the relevance thereof against the Springbok matches and results. Langafstandskoppe gee ‘n ander positiewe dimensie. What are we losing in this selection? The Springboks will have a more predictable attact from the back. Willie le Roux has just got a different attacking ability, mainly because of his running skills. He is by far the best equipped Springbok in this regard. The fact that he has got more speed than Frans makes him a more dangerous player in this respect. Willie also has a very good left foot which can be used very effectively on the left side of the field of the Springboks if needed. If we however, select him as the right wing, the Springboks can use very effectively when we need the kicking game on that side of the field. From this position on the field Willie has been very successful in playing himself into the game as a very effective “rover” in the team to pop up when needed on the attack. His ability to read the game and be effective where needed, is remarkable. Jaque Fourie was baie lank laas in Suid Afrika in aksie. Daarom haal ek regtig my hoed af vir Victor Matfield. Hy is op die veld en kompeteer. Of ek hom sal kies is ‘n tweede saak.

This parcel can only be optimized by no 9 and 10 in the development of the game and through good communication and effective man management of the talent at the selected team’s disposal. To select the right play with the right player at the right time of the game on the right place on the field with the right quality of possession is an art. When it comes to decision making in a specifice situation, it can become a lifetime education in utilising a particular skill as it was for Joel Stransky with his final drop goal in the 1995 World cup final. Coaches should give the halfbacks the opportunity to develop this sense throughout their careers. As to my selection for the Springboks, the selection of no 9 will not go to either of the above candidates, but to de Klerk of the Lions. He plays as a traditional scrumhalf with quick passes from the base of the scrum, rucks and mauls to no 10 in order to give no 10 the maximum time to make the next decision. De Klerk possesses the rest of the skill set to assist the flyhalf if he wants the scrumhalf to kick. The fact that he is a very dangerous attacker around the scrum, forces the opposition to defend him very well, which takes a lot of defenders (pressure) off the flyhalf. In ‘n Wêreldbeker ‘n moet.

Bypass not to be bypassed By Alta Pretorius

The proposed Hermanus Bypass road has been a bone of contention for many years. Countless meetings have been held – often leading to heated discussions.

S

ome people wonder whether it has all been a waste of energy. A prominent businessman who prefers to remain anonymous, says he has inside information that the process will not be stopped, since it is in the hands of the Western Cape Government who has already budgeted for the whole process. “The financial approval has been given at provincial level, and the only matter which still needs to be finalised is the exact location of the road,” he said. The aim is to divert traffic not intent on visiting the Central Business District (CBD) away from the CBD. There are currently two route options for the proposed bypass. The Southern Alignment run alongside Mountain Drive and will divert traffic between the Hermanus High School and the Sport Complex, the route then turns left onto Fairways Avenue. The Northern Alignment also run alongside Mountain Drive but turns north of the sport complex past Fernkloof Nature Reserve and then turns left onto Fairways Avenue. In October 2012 it was reported that the realignment of the existing provincial main road through Hermanus had been under discussion for approximately twenty years, before it was jointly motivated by the Overstrand Municipality and the provincial government, who then appointed SRK Environmental Consultants to conduct the public consultation process and environmental impact assessment. The Municipality encouraged all interested and affected parties to provide inputs and comments. The final stage of the Scoping Report for Environmental Assessment has now been reached, and comments had to be submitted before 20th July 2015. It

was available for download on the SRK website www.srk.co.za via the Public Document link. The plans for the road were on display at the Hermanus High School on 2nd July and consultants were on hand to respond to questions. One of the biggest motivations behind the Bypass proposal, as cited in the scoping report, is that the R43 along with the CBD relief route is at capacity and will not be able to carry an increase in traffic that comes with time and further development of the town. Whale Coast Conservation has been actively involved in the public participation process since the beginning, and the latest WCC Newsletter reports as follows: “The project is entering the design phase and the owner of the project has already decided to go ahead with it, only requiring environmental and land use planning authorisation. The scoping stage of the EIA is intended to establish what specialist studies must be conducted to determine the environmental impact of the proposed development. It is important to recognise that the Provincial Department for Transport and Public Works will not stop the implementation process at this stage, only prescribe investigative work that they require in order to inform their decision on environmental impact. Our comments now need to be made in a way that clearly points to what specialist studies should be done, and by whom.” “In essence, WCC believes that the decline of the Hermanus CBD needs to be much more creatively addressed. Alternative solutions that are more consistent with the specific need of Hermanus should be developed in consultation with local community representatives and urban planning specialists who are familiar with the Provincial Spatial Development Framework (PSDF) and related planning principles. WCC proposes that planners should take seriously the recommendations in the PSDF to implement different approaches to urban design, access and transportation issues.

Department of Transport and Public Works spends R186 million on the Hemel en Aarde road The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works announced in a press release that they are currently upgrading the surface of the R320 Hemel en Aarde Road between Hermanus and Caledon. The current road works include the re-alignment of Shaw’s Mountain Pass. The estimated contract value is R186 million. Construction originally commenced in March 2012 but the contract was terminated in November 2013. In February 2015, the contract was awarded to a new service provider for completion. The construction should be completed towards the end of 2015 after which motorists will be able to enjoy a safer travelling experience. During April 2015, about 5.5 km of the full project length was completed and almost 1 km was partially completed. It is anticipated that a further 2.5 km and 1.8 km of the full project is expected to be completed and partially completed in the next couple of weeks. To date, the contract has been extended by 41 days due to inclement weather. In addition, a severe storm hit the area in November 2013 causing major damage. This has resulted in a further extension of time of 47 days. Materials have also proven to be a major concern. The biggest challenge remains to find suitable gravel wearing coarse, a specific material for non-surfaced roads, for the intended re-gravel of six kilometers of District Road 1 257, which forms part of the Main Road 269 upgrading project. There are no road closures, however traffic is accommodated on one-way sections between km 12 and km 16 as well as between km 17 and 20. These kilometers are clearly indicated on R320. During construction, temporary one-way day-closures are occasionally deployed. Over the three year period, vast job creation opportunities were created for the local economy. To date, an amount of R21 million has been invested on targeted enterprises and R10 million on targeted labour on the project. Currently, there are also five local learnership candidates on site. An on-site nursery was established at the start of the project to facilitate the rehabilitation of environmentally sensitive areas which included the critically endangered areas around Shaw’s Mountain Pass, as well as various wetland areas along the route.

van varkhok tot paleis

I

“ A painting to rest the brain…
