While the arum lily frog occasionally uses the flowers for shelter, it is not dependant on them. This micro frog is grounddwelling, breeding in temporary pools, and it does not climb into any flowers.

– an Overberg feast for the senses Nestled against the majestic Riviersondereind mountains lies the quirky village of Greyton and for the second year running it is host to the Creative Arts Festival from 26 – 28 August. To add variety and unconventionality, organisers have cast their net beyond Greyton to include over 40 artists from the Overberg region. Discerning art lovers and connoisseurs can expect a broad spectrum of mediums promising to stimulate the senses. Known artists from the region include Kali van der Merwe, Philip John and Jan Vingerhoets from Baardskeerdersbos, Carol Mangiagalli, Johno du Plessis and Gert Naudé from Caledon, Heinrich Joemath and mouth artist Martin Sodoms from Genadendal, Catherine Paynter, Marina Aguiar, Warrick Kemp, Gretha Quinlan and Monique Fagan from Greyton, Catherine Brennon from Hermanus, and Gareth and Ginny Hinkling, Gustav Bester, Margaret Epstein, Louis Stroh van der Walt from Villiersdorp. Also exhibiting are Anthony Shapiro, Jo Pentz and Karin Abedian, three well know ceramicists from Cape Town as well as Victor Harley from Pringle Bay. Aside from the DRC hall and Anglican Church hall, works are being exhibited at shops, restaurants, studios, private homes and accommodation establishments throughout the village. “Our primary objective has always been to showcase the artistic talent we have in Greyton. By inviting our neighbouring villages and towns to participate adds flavour and a new dimension to the event,” committee chair Estelle van Loggerenberg points out. “The Creative Arts Festival is an ideal opportunity for art collectors to invest in works from acclaimed artists and upcoming talent.” The festival programme line-up aims to attract a wide audience. Included is an outing to a working dairy farm, a guided hike to the Genadendal bushman paintings, close encounters with farm animals, informative talks, an introduction to clay pigeon shooting, an architectural heritage walk of the village, beer tasting at Greyton’s very own brewery, gluhwein by candlelight and a late night movie evening. A further highlight is self- proclaimed Xhosa-speaking Jewish comedian-leg-spinner Nik Rabinowitz’s show “Midwife Crisis”, his first state of the planet address since becoming a father of three. During the festival weekend, youngsters are encouraged to attend “Goosie’s Story” the tale of a recued battery chick focusing on the humane treatment of animals. Greyton’s famous Saturday market with its upmarket crafters and local food stalls is extending opening hours to accommodate the expected increase in visitors. Workshops suitable for young and old have been arranged to take place at various times over the weekend. Try the fun-filled drama sessions with Ryan Johnson where children are encouraged to play up or explore nature’s healing remedies with local fynbos guru Marshall Rinquest. Alternatively, create candle castles with chandler Grabbie, experiment with cake decorating techniques under the guidance of cake designer Elicetone Diedericks or join Erna Moolman for a fabric hand printing session. “Many small villages as ours rely on tourism as their primary source of income,” explains John McGlashan chair of Greyton Tourism. “An event such as the Art Festival is very important to us as it attracts new and repeat visitors to town stimulating local economic development.” He urged the public to book accommodation as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. pparently humans are the most intelligent species on the planet. (I know, hard to believe, considering how we try to selfdestruct on a daily basis.) We’re growing body parts in petri dishes, soon our cars will be driving themselves and you can practically run a space station from your smart phone. Then how come men and women still don’t understand each other after centuries of evolution? Has the one half evolved faster than the other? Or here’s a thought; has the other half possibly not evolved at all? Don’t look at me – I’m only starting the conversation, I don’t have the answer. What with August being woman’s month, I thought I’d look at the differences between Eve and her Adam and celebrate it, instead of lamenting it. By the way, why do women get a Woman’s day and the men get nothing? Because you owe us, sweetie pie! Owe us what, you may ask? First of all, it is completely and utterly unfair that men with wrinkles look way more attractive than their female counterparts. Men wake up in the morning looking exactly the way they did when they went to bed. Women for some reason deteriorate during the night. A woman feels obliged to dress up just to buy milk. Hell, some girls even dress up to collect the post at the gate! Men can happily slump around in a pair of shorts and a grubby T-shirt for an entire weekend without getting depressed about it. He will grudgingly dress up for weddings and funerals. But then you have to choose the entire outfit. Including his socks and shoes. As for bathrooms: a man needs 6 items to get by. Toothbrush and toothpaste, razor, soap, towel and shampoo. On average women have 337 bathroomrelated products on hand. (I’m not making this up, I researched it on the Internet) A man can maybe identify 20 of these items. Still wondering about that evolution question? A man spends about R120 on a haircut. A woman will spend an average of R600 to look exactly the same as when she went in to the hairdresser. Ja, ja. Man 1, Woman 0. Let’s call it quits and move on. Just a friendly reminder, a woman always has the last say in an argument. Anything a man says after that is the start of a new argument. Vier jy Vrouedag, Mevrou/mejuffrou? Weet nie van jou nie, maar ek werk, suster. Al is ek ‘n vrou. Wel, okay ek het ‘n winkel en ‘n dag soos Vrouedag is die ideale geleentheid vir vrouens om hulle vroulike selwers ‘n

bietjie te trakteer. En ek kan persoonlik nie aan ‘n beter plek dink as Amulet nie. Maar ernstig… hou vrouens ooit op met werk? Word jy jaarliks op 9 Augustus in die bed bedien met ‘n heilsame ontbyt… Terwyl Pa die kinders se kosblikke pak, help met die laaste huiswerk, onthou om die hond se pille te gee, gou die huis netjies maak, vanaand se ete beplan… Mmmm, nie so gedink nie Meneer. Vrouens is wonderlike wesens… Ons raak gaga oor babatjies, blomme, mooi goeters, klere en ‘n mooi handsak (al het jy reeds 18 in die kas) Maar liefie, hierdie handsak lyk glad nie soos my ander leersak nie… Hierdie een het ‘n ekstra sakkie in die binnekant, hallo! Vrouens weet wat die subtiele verskil is tussen duck egg en vintage french green. Ons verstaan nie mans se fassinasie met motors en V8 enjins nie. Ek kan jou nie vertel wat in my kar se enjin aangaan nie maar ek kan jou vertel dat sy ‘n Burgundy Beauty is. Dis hoekom ek die kar wou hê, sy het perfek gepas by ‘n fluweeljas wat ek jare gelede in Londen gekoop het. Ek het nou nog die kar en die jas… en daai karretjie se petrolverbruik is fantasties en ek kan 8 groot bokse ingelaai kry as ek voorraad gaan oplaai. Sien, pragtig en prettig kan prakties ook wees. Hoor jy Oom, jy wat so skepties voor my pienk winkeltjie staan. Kom gerus in en vergaap jou. Ek sien dit elke dag in Amulet. Man en vrou kom in. Eerder sy kom in. hy staan op die drumpel, skrikkerig vir die plek vol goeters. Als is onbeskaamd mooi, nie noodwendig prakties nie… Nie ‘n tool of ‘n gadget in sig nie . Wat soek jy vrou? Nee ek kyk net liefie. Mans verstaan nie van net kyk nie. Behalwe as dit by karre, power tools en Flat screen TV’s kom. Ek het slim geraak – ek het ‘n hoop kar tydskrifte agter in die koffiewinkel sodat die arme verskrikte man kan oplees oor die nuuste Vier by Vier se manewales in een of ander onherbergsame area… terwyl sy vrou in vrede goetertjies kan bevoel en ruik en optel… Ek moet bieg party manne geniet die dekortydskrifte ook. We’ve come a long way, baby.

Baie mans kla dat vrouens onpeilbaar, onvoorspelbaar en eintlik net plein beneuk is. Ja meneer ons is dit als. Ons is komplekse en eksotiese wesens en dis hoekom julle ons onweerstaanbaar vind, want julle weet nie wat kom volgende nie. (ons weet self ook nie altyd wat kom volgende nie) Partykeer bedoel ons nie wat ons sê nie, en ander kere bedoel ons is dit presies, woord vir woord – het jy nie ore aan jou kop nie! En dis ‘n man se lewenstaak om daardie geheime kode uit te werk. Ons kan tranerig raak oor die simpelste goed, maar dan kan ons humeur net so vinnig opvlam soos bv. wanneer ‘n man in ‘n 60 km sone op my Burgundy Beauty se gat ry… Nee seuna ek gaan nie vinniger ry en ‘n spoedkaartjie kry net sodat jy vinniger by die volgende rooi robot kan uitkom nie… Ek moet bieg my dierbare man lei ook aan hierdie siekte en dis nie ‘n goeie idee dat ons saam in dieselfde kar ry nie… Hy beskuldig my dat ek soos ‘n ou tannie ry en spot dat ek moet ‘oppas vir kar omgooi’ wanneer ek teen ‘n veilige spoed om ‘n draai gaan. Maar dan moet ek in dieselfde asem erken my liewe Percy het vir 12 jaar elke oggend ons dogter se kosblik vir haar ingepak, haar skool toe gery en vir my tee gebring in die oggend. Noudat Jana ‘n eerstejaar is, pak Percy deesdae vir my ‘n kosblik! En hy’s nie enig in sy soort nie. Kyk maar na al die kookprogramme op TV. Die manne kook ‘n hond uit ‘n bos uit. Ek weet daar’s nou van die ouer garde wat hulle koppe skud en wonder wat het van die wêreld geword as manne begin wortelkoek bak. Ek reken dis omtrent tyd dat elkeen maak soos hy of sy lekkerkry. So as jy suur is oor daar nie ‘n ‘Mansdag’ is nie, gee ek jou offisieël toestemming dat jy ook die dag afvat op Vrouedag. Bederf jouself. Loop kyk karre, of gaan speel golf of leer hekel as jy daarna voel. Of kom sê hallo vir my in my Happy plek. Maar maak jou reg vir tonne mooi goeters, lieflike musiek, blomme…. Nes ons meisies daarvan hou.

Turn up the heat “Microwaving” away the skin sag … effects in comparison to continuous ablative laser modalities. Further developments have also made several different technologies available. Many of these advances have been in the area of combination therapies such as incorporating either continuous wave or fractional resurfacing systems with other treatments. Some of these emerging therapies include radiofrequency therapy (RF), and Intense Pulsed light (IPL) therapies, to reduce sun damage and sunspots. Radiofrequency technology has been growing and has recently been combined with laser ablation. Radiofrequency has become popular for its effectiveness in skin laxity by sparing the epidermis through a method that traditionally produces lower temperatures than lasers and can be focused specifically to the dermis. The heat production results in the skin tightening within the dermal tissue from the immediate denaturation and contraction of collagen fibers, and later initiates new collagen formation in subsequent weeks and months. Combination therapy using the ablative laser with radiofrequency has been reported in recent years. This combination of epidermal ablation and dermal heating with radiofrequency, called sublative resurfacing in some studies, is suitable for skin types I–IV, for the treatment of skin laxity, wrinkles, enlarged pores, pigmented lesions, acne, telangiectasias (facial veins), and scaring from trauma or acne. Patient recovery and down time periods are significantly lower when compared with ablative laser healing times, with minimal adverse effects. The result by adding dermal heat from the radiofrequency and the ablation of a fractionated laser gives very controlled results in the treatment of all skin concerns without any down time. At Refine, our 2D treatment of combining Tripollar, a mild heat RF treatment before doing a Fractionated resurfacing laser, gives the client superior tightening and overall skin rejuvenation.

The demand for skin resurfacing and rejuvenating procedures has progressively increased in the last decade and has sparked several advances within the skin resurfacing field that promote faster healing while minimizing downtime and side effects for patients. Several technological and procedural skin resurfacing developments are being integrated into clinical practices today allowing clinicians to treat a broader range of patients’ skin types and pathologies than in years past, with noteworthy outcomes. Medical and aesthetic skin procedures have seen a steady surge within the last decade largely stemming from greater numbers of new skin cancer diagnoses and a higher demand for skin rejuvenation practices. In 2013 in the United States, dermatologic surgeons performed over 9.5 million treatments, with a rising number of treatments involving skin resurfacing in the areas of laser/light/ energy-based procedures (2.25 million) Treatment of skin disorders using laser technologies dates back to the early 1960s, and quickly became a popular method for improving facial wrinkles, scars, skin growths, and blemishes. Laserbased tissue destruction is based on the characteristics of laser wavelength, chromophore targeting, energy density, and laser pulse duration such that when these parameters are optimized, appropriate energy is delivered for targeted laser resurfacing with minimal collateral tissue damage. In the 1980s, continuous wave CO2 lasers became available for more effective aesthetic resurfacing, but resulted in mixed outcomes that included many anticipated side effects following resurfacing treatment. Early CO2 resurfacing lasers generated a high rate of dyspigmentation, scarring, and infections as well as increased pain, and downtime. The enhanced thermal injury was in part due to the continuous wave nature of these early CO2 lasers that left a wide zone of thermal damage and ablation. In the early 2000s, further laser development made available the ablative fractional laser that enabled delivery of skin treatments with a grid of vertical columns known as micro-thermal treatment zones, which penetrated the epidermis and dermis. The dermal penetration by the fractional lasers leads to new and remodelled collagen formation by the surrounding fibroblasts, as well as the tightening of existing collagen that contributes to the filling of wrinkles and improved skin tone. Overall, the fractional laser treatment results in faster healing, shorter downtime, and less adverse

ARMAND NEL Amazingly novice entrant Armand trained mostly on his own but also alongside fellow entrant and experienced local athlete Gerhard Ferreira and together they followed a stringent training and diet program that culminated in Armand winning the Men’s Cover Model up to 174cm category! Armand is young and highly motivated and held it together both physically and mentally on the stage, he competed with such remarkable maturity and humility, what a role model for any young man wanting to do this sort of challenge for the first time, he looked like such a seasoned & composed athlete on stage!

n Saturday the 11th of June 2016 many of our country’s top fitness & body building athletes took to the stage to compete in The Battle of the Titans, South Africa’s premier health & fitness challenge! This contest was held at Durbanville High School under the strict adjudication of a panel of 8 national bodybuilding & fitness industry judges. The highly technical entry criteria for each category were strictly enforced by these judges and included some of the following stage categories: Ladies Beach Bikini, Ladies Fitness Bikini, Ladies Body Fitness, Men’s Cover Model & Men’s Muscle Model. Just to allow all contestants (young & old, short & tall) the opportunity to compete fairly these categories were further broken down into age & height sub-categories. Proactive Fitness is proud to say that we had 5 entrants at this prestigious fitness contest: MARK NOEL Novice entrant Mark was drilled into shape by our highly experienced in-house Personal Trainer Nic Lotter who himself has competed in several national Body Building contests (currently Nic has his WP colours in men’s Body Building!). Amazingly Mark dropped from a 12.9% body-fat measurement to just 6% in only 20 weeks! They totalled a massive 170 hours of intense training in the gym. The secret to Mark’s amazing body transformation was not only the discipline of his training but following a strict calorie controlled diet plan which if you ask most of our athletes is arguably the hardest discipline of all. Mark placed 4th overall in the Men’s Cover Model over 174cm height category. Perhaps the only reason that Mark didn’t place in the top 3 was the fact that he was slightly too ‘hard’ with his build & muscle tone for that category but when we asked him if he was disappointed he responded by saying that he was overjoyed at doing so well in his first contest and took the fact that he looked too ‘solid’ for that entry category as a massive compliment, and we all agree Mark looked absolutely brilliant and there was no mistaking his extroverted personality on stage! Well done Mark. To all our entrants, we are super proud of all of you and we commend you for your effort and how you all conduct yourselves in the gym and on stage. Andre is a prime example of an athlete who has the discipline to stay in shape all year round and at 43 we regard him as a role model for all aspiring body conscious athletes in Hermanus proving that age is no obstacle if you have a strong enough will to succeed!

Husband & wife: GERHARD & VANESSA FERREIRA Gerhard entered the Men’s Muscle Model over 174cm category and despite a slight last minute problem with his spray tan application which may well have cost him the chance of being placed in one of the top 3 positions, he still managed to put on a brilliant show and all who saw him both before, during and after the contest will agree that he is in the best shape of his life! Gerhard says that despite his technical tanning error he is in no way put off by that and that he is now even more eager to compete again as soon as possible in order to maintain the excellent form that he has currently achieved. Vanessa was our only female athlete and she took stage competing in one of the busiest & competitive categories of all, the Ladies Fitness Bikini under 163cm. Vanessa took the spoils by winning her category! Both she and Gerhard can be seen training as a couple most days at Proactive Fitness and together they are 20 a prime example of how a couple can enjoy exercise together and compete successfully together at a high national level and standard.

amibië is ’n groot land en oorweldigend, so met die eerste ontmoeting. Na dertien jaar se verblyf daar was dit steeds oorweldigend behalwe dat ek toe gewoond geraak het aan die afstande tussen dorpe. Daar was geen manier dat jy gou vir ’n Sondag kon gaan kuier nie. As jy wou kuier moes jy maar pak vir ’n paar dae. Die mense van die land is gewoond aan gaste wat oorbly. Hulle maak hul huise en harte oop vir kuiergaste. Die Namibieërs is warm mense nes hul land en hulle harte is so groot soos die Namib- woestyn. My seuns het altyd gese; “Ma dis ons land daai” en so moes ek hulle later afstaan aan hulle land. Nou is ek gelukkig as hul terug kom vir ’n vinnige kuiertjie by my, so ook van my vriende. Caro du Toit is ’n Namib- kind, wat dan en wan hier inval met haar Volla om hello te se , wanneer sy in ons wêreld kom kuier vir ’n bietjie sielkos, soos sy dit noem. Ek verstaan dit, want Namibië is ’n bar wereld, met ’n skoonheid op sy eie. Dis eers as jy nooit die reuk van die grond sal vergeet nie en die sonbesies permanent in jou kop sing, dat jy weet die land het in jou murg ingetrek. Stadig maar seker begin jy dan sy skoonheid ontdek. ’n Mans-wêreld verseker, min vir die vroue oog, maar daar waar die estetiese agter bly kom die vroulike kreatiwiteit in oorvloed na vore. Caro skep kunswerke uit dit wat beskikbaar is. Sy verf op ou plankies, klippe en ander optel goed, sommige dra ’n versie of ’n boodskap oor. Dis haar liefde vir speel in haar huis wat haar “huisgoed” laat verf. ’n Skilderytjie wat die oog bederf so tussen al die breekgoed op ’n rakkie. Haar oorerflike gene om te skep, as die mooi om haar makeer. Caro het ’n pophuisie in Onrusrivier, waarheen sy soms ontsnap. Hier kan sy met hartelus in haar tuintjie grou, blommetjie plant en weer deel word van ’n wêreld met oorvloed groen. Al die mooi in ons omgewing vasvang in haar hart om later te gaan uitleef in Namibië. Maar die huisie het ook ’n ander doel; so met elke besoek word die huis voorberei vir eendag as sy altyd hier gaan kom bly. Daar word gewoeker en gewerskaf in en om die pophuisie. Nes geskrop vir die vale, terwyl sy en haar man, die flaminke dophou, skemeraand en heerlik drink aan ons kontrei wyn. Caro se kunssinnigheid en handewerk is oral te sien. Die blommelapdoek oor die bank, die Franse kant, met die hand vasgewerk, voor die venstertjie. Inderdaad ’n roos skildery tussen die breekgoed op ’n houtkas. Die blad van ’n ou tuintafel is met mosaic omskep in ’n vrolike meesterstuk, gemaak van stukkies ou borde en koppies. Tussen die groen "Ivies" teen die stoepmuur hang ’n bordjie, met ’n erde beker en ’n “oxo” deksel. Die woord “Home” is simbolies, ’n geheime band tussen Caro en haar huis. Sy onderneem om terug te kom en die pophuisie onderneem om geduldig te wag. Caro verduidelik; “Doen wat jy kan, met wat jy het, waar jy is. My sintuie wil harmoniese balans en mooi hê, om gelukkig te wees"

Splash had the opportunity to speak to a few DJs from Whale Coast FM, a community radio station based in Hermanus which broadcasts in the Overstrand area.

We had a little chat about the kind of shows readers can listen to, their work thus far and the way forward for the station. Dayne Nel, the Station Manager explains that there are about 25 volunteers that work at WCFM. These volunteers come from different backgrounds and thus gives Whale Coast FM (WCFM) a diverse selection of shows with different topics and a wide selection of music. “We have lawyers, educational specialists and people from all walks of life. Our shows are very diverse, ranging from gospel, rock, golden oldies, classical and the newest charttopping hits,” Dayne explained.

While on the subject of different music styles Anne Krebs explains that she enjoys most genres but if she had to pick a favourite, it would have to be Rock and Folk. Where Pieter van Aswegen, presenter of Honey and Dark Chocolate, says his choice in music is usually based on his mood. He did, however, add that he is not too fond of hip-hop or rap but is still able to appreciate the art form. At WCFM the community they serve is their main focus. Dayne explains it: “We also strive to keep people informed as much as possible, with local content in all our news bulletins." She encourages residents to send news to the station as well: "People are welcome to send news to news@whalecoastfm.co.za.” Pieter agreed with Dayne about the importance of the community to WCFM. He also added that what he enjoys most about the radio station is the direct connection with the community. In his own words, he explains it: “My people and my town and I am so proud to be part of this paradise”. Anne also echoed their feelings: "A Community Station is more in touch with its listeners. Anne is on air every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for the drive show from 4 to 6pm and of course the Splash Triple Play on Fridays @ 16:30. On Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm Anne 'Drops it like it's hot' and Sundays from 10 am to 12 noon you can tune in for a more relaxing session with Anne and 'Breeze'. Pieter has been with WCFM for two years and originally got involved with the radio station when he and Dr. Martin Fisher did talks on colour.

With two years worth of programmes and interviews, it was difficult for him to choose an interview that he could list as his favourite, but one that stood out to him was an interview with Overstrand Mayor, Nicolette Botha-Guthrie. The interview took place after a devastating fire in January 2015.

When asked about his first interview on air he does admit that it was both nerve racking and life changing, but that it has changed him for the better. Looking forward, Pieter still has a lot of topics he would want to cover in interviews ranging from different takes on the afterlife to music and musicians. He hopes he will be able to cover at least a few of these topics on his long list while at WCFM. Anne has been part of WCFM for four years now, and she says her time at the station has been packed with a lot of funny and even a few embarrassing moments. After the short interview, it was clear to see that Pieter, Anne and Dayne keep the station's mission close to their hearts and they really want to entertain, enrich and educate with the work on air.

The secrets of successful Social Media Interaction in the business world was revealed at a seminar organized by the Hermanus Business Chamber on Thursday 21 July at the Whale Coast Hotel. It was presented by IT specialist Jeanette du Toit from Jaydee Media. Forty people attended. She revealed that there are currently more than 2,2 billion Active Social Media users in the world, most of them mobile users. Digital technology is used by large groups of people to share information and develop social and professional contacts. Many businesses are utilizing social media to generate sales. The statistics are staggering. Social Media users in 2016 : Facebook 1.6 Billion, You Tube: 1 Billion. Instagram: 430 Million, LinkedIn 429 mill, Google Plus: 440 mill, Twitter 325 mill, Pinterest 110 million, • 120,000 tweets are sent every second, • 70 mill Instagram images are posted daily • 56% of people use Facebook daily • The Google + button is used 5 billion times every day • 800 mill users spend 15 min or more on YouTube every day Engagement is the new Word of Mouth, and Social media has become the most efficient way of communicating. In 2008 10% of people used it, and now 87%. Jeanette du Toit demonstrated how to pinpoint your location on Google Maps and send it to visitors or potential clients who wish to find you. She also divulged several tips and useful ways of utilising Social Media to benefit your business. Ways of using free survey tools were discussed. Business people who attended found it very helpful and educational and requests have been received for further training. It is scheduled for 11th August, and will involve the following: Hands-on Social Media Workshop – bring your own laptop/ tablet/ mobile phone. “This will be a hands-on workshop, equipping people with skills of immeasurable value to communicate with the outside world and do effective marketing,” says Du Toit.
