Pinot noir is the ultimate wine to have at the table. It's a white wine masquerading as red... [while] chardonnay is a red masquerading as a white. - Kevin Zraly Hi Splash Readers Pinot Noir is a red wine grape variety of the species Vitis Vinifera. Pinot Noir grapes are grown around the world, mostly in the cooler climates, but the grape is chiefly associated with the Burgundy region of France. Other regions that have gained a reputation for Pinot Noir include: the Willamette Valley of Oregon, the Carneros, Central Coast and California, the Elgin and Walker Bay wine regions of South Africa, South Australia, Adelaide Hills, Tasmania and Yarra Valley in Australia and the Central Otago, Martinborough and Marlborough wine regions of New Zealand.

Pinot Noir is a difficult varietal to cultivate and transform into wine. The grape's tendency to produce tightly packed clusters makes it susceptible to several viticultural hazards involving rot that require diligent canopy management. The thin-skins and low levels of phenolic compounds lends Pinot to producing mostly lightly colored, medium bodied and low tannin wines that can often go through phases of uneven and unpredictable aging. When young, wines made from Pinot Noir tend to have red fruit aromas of cherries, raspberries and strawberries. As the wine ages, Pinot has the potential to develop more vegetal and "barnyard" aromas that can contribute to the complexity of the wine.

OVERBERG GETS

STITCHED

together!

Overbergers agree – it’s a hassle to have to drive to Cape Town, especially during peak time. And, although Hermanus provides in most of its inhabitants’ needs, there ís one line of products for which residents have had to frequently make the inevitable journey to the Mother City - sewing, embroidery and quilting supplies! However, this frustration is now a thing of the past. A stitching shop has opened its doors right here in mid-town, Hermanus!

Creative Notions

is a consultant and official dealer for brands such as Brother, Pfaff, Singer, Empisal, Ricoma, Feiya and Happy. Hence, the business is in the ideal position to give advice on the most suitable make and model sewing or embroidery machine to suit a customer’s needs and pocket. The shop also supplies a wide selection of embroidery, quilting and sewing consumables and accessories. Creative Notions is in Long Street, with ample, convenient and safe parking across the road. What’s more, haberdashery orders can be placed online and the goods delivered by fast and reliable couriers. For its dynamic owner, Louis Pretorius, this shop not only marks an expansion of his thriving business in Pretoria, but it’s also the realization of a dream that has been in the making since 2008. This goal was reached when Louis and his wife, Mireille were holidaying in the Western Cape. While driving into Hermanus, Louis exclaimed: “Hier wil ek bly!” (This is where I want to live!) Not one to let the grass grow under his feet, Louis found suitable premises the very same day. Within three months, the couple moved to Hermanus to start a branch of Creative Notions. Louis is multi-talented, but has always had a passion for stitching.

“Stitching as a hobby turned into a business when I discovered a dusty old knitting machine in the garage. As I was still holding down a nine-to-five job at the time, I knitted panels of sweaters and cardigans at night, sewing them together in the morning. I sold the finished garments to my colleagues at work,” chuckles Louis. Soon almost everyone at the office was wearing a “Louis-creation”! “Creative Notions in Pretoria began as a small, home-based business selling only one product,” Louis explains. Soon word of Louis’ knowledge and expertise got around and the business rapidly expanded, with customers across the African continent. This expertise has now become available to stitchers in Overberg, ranging from hobbyists, to home- and industrial businesses. In order to empower customers to master stitching skills, Louis and his proficient team also present regular hands-on training on various machines and an exciting variety of sewing, embroidery and quilting workshops. Should Hermanus be too far, or class dates be inconvenient, the Creative Notions website offers online video sewing projects and courses. More good news is that this unique shop is able to service and repair all makes and models of sewing and embroidery machines. Louis smiles broadly when he says: “It will give me pleasure to inspire Overberg to become stitch-empowered.” The shop also deals in used machines. So, what more could a sewing enthusiast want! Be sure to pop in at Creative Notions at 23 Long Street (next to Village Foods) to give a warm welcome to Louis and his team! Creative Notions can be contacted on 028 312 2182, info@creativenotions.co.za or www.creativenotions.co.za.

NThis botanical gem has more than 1300 recorded plant species in its 1800 hectares.

ever before has a book been written on the Fernkloof Nature Reserve (FNR) in Hermanus.

To celebrate Fernkloof’s 60 year anniversary, a group of dedicated Hermanus Botanical Society members have combined their expertise in their various fields of interest, and the Fernkloof Nature Reserve book is a result of their considerable effort. There are 184 pages of glossy colour, with more than 400 photographs of plants and creatures, large and small, which can be seen in the Nature Reserve. All these are accompanied by a description of the plant/creature with useful tips for identification. Photographs of stunning views, descriptions of the 60 km of hiking trails, maps, geology, and so much more will be found in the book. It is A5 size with soft cover intended as a field guide and to be of interest to all visitors to the FNR.

60Anniversary

The book will be launched at the Hermanus Flower Festival in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve from 22-25 September 2017. Come and get your copy and use it to explore this beautiful piece of Paradise.

Flower Festival from 22 to 25 September 2017. This will be a special event with a book being launched to showcase Fernkloof and what it has to offer. It also acts as a handy hiking trail guide to lead nature lovers along a 60 kilometer network of paths to waterfalls and breathtaking views high up on the Kleinriver Mountains overlooking Hermanus, a popular tourist town in the Western Cape. The reserve is 1,800 hectares in area, ranging from sea level to 842 metres and harbours more than 1 250 species of indigenous fynbos species. The Fernkloof Nature Reserve forms part of the Cape Floristic Region near the southern tip of South Africa. Although it is the smallest of the six recognised floral kingdoms of the world, it boasts the highest concentration of indigenous plants per square meter and extraordinarily

high fynbos diversity. The economical worth of the CFR, based on harvests of fynbos products (e.g. wildflowers) and eco-tourism, is estimated to be in the region of R77 million a year. Thus the Cape Floristic Region has both economic and intrinsic biological value as a biodiversity hotspot, and as a major tourist attraction.

PRINT VS. DIGITAL Advertising

A

dvertising is one of the best ways to communicate with your customers but choosing a medium these days can be quite challenging. So which platform do you choose when there are so many options out there? Print and online marketing are often the two that first come to mind when looking to advertise. The advantages of online exposure are many. It’s cheap, flexible, instantaneous and doesn’t pile up on the sideboard for filing while printed adverts bring a sense of authenticity and substance to your branding in a way that online adverts and marketing find difficult to replicate. In SA Facebook and Instagram dominate the social media landscape. Facebook is now used by a quarter of all South Africans, while Instagram saw the fastest growth of any social network in South Africa last year. keep in mind though that not all social media platforms work for every type of business. B2B companies would probably find LinkedIn and/ or Twitter more beneficial than the aforementioned. Online marketing clearly has numerous benefits. Facebook, for example, has two outstanding features namely targeting and engagement. The beauty of Facebook is its advanced algorithms

which allow you to choose your target audience. You simply pick all the attributes of the ideal customer you would like to buy your service/product and it will magically do the rest for you. These include gender, age, interests, demographics, language and much more. The second advantage is the aspect of engagement as you can interact with your customers almost instantly. Other notable advantages include insights with data relevant to the habits of your following such as actions taken, the times they are online and the content they enjoy most. The relatively low cost of advertising on Facebook and other social media platforms is appealing for small to medium enterprises who don’t have large budgets. Social media platforms are additionally a great way to drive traffic to your website. Print media on the other hand also has its benefits and for those who think print is dead think again. Newspapers and magazines have some characteristics that the web simply cannot match or replicate. A study by Millward Brown found that physical material is more ‘real’ to the brain and it is thus perceived to have substance and meaning as it better connects to one’s memory by engaging with the ‘emotional and spacial processing’ of data by the brain. This is vital for brand associations.

Many local and national publications have healthy circulation figures making it worth your while to advertise with them. Magazines, brochures and catalogues, for example, tend to have a long life, as customers hold onto them or pass them on to friends and family. Studies have also shown that almost eight out of ten millennials who have grown up ‘online’ say that physical materials such as cards and letters make them feel more connected to people than digital messages. These findings, as well as other studies, clearly indicate that print media is here to stay and does play an important role in marketing efforts. Let’s face it, there is nothing better than hunkering down on your sofa with a mug of great java to page through your favourite publication. Ultimately the key to successful advertising is knowing the unique selling point of your product/service and then choosing a vehicle that will best target your ideal customer. ROOIDAG LEON GROPP

Jy kan hierdie rol speel by ’n kind of ’n skool in jou omgewing. (The Bookwhisperer deur Donalyn Miller) Vir verdere inligting, kontak Amanda (amandad@vva.atkv.org.za) of Chareldine by (chareldinev@vva.atkv.org.za). Mooi loop!

Onrus Artist

CHARMAINE DE JONGH GELDERBLOM

Charmaine’s love affair with Onrus started as a child, visiting Onrus with her father, every December school holiday. Visions of donkey carts laden with perlemoen and alikreukel, selling their harvest from the sea at the caravan park, climbing through giant Milkwood trees and swimming in the dark brown, luke warm water of the lagoon aroused her passion for being an Onrus artist. She uses extravagant colour in her paintings inspired by the sun and sea of Onrus. In later years, visiting Onrus, she couldn’t wait to visit the Onrus Gallery, feasting her eyes on the works of Hennie Niemann, Audrey Fourie and Gregoire, to name but a few. Today her dream has come through, opening her Studio doors at the old Onrus Gallery. “A privilege and honour to paint where these SA masters’ works were displayed.” Studio Charmaine De Jongh Gelderblom has opened its doors, corner of Van Blommenstein and Lagoon Drive, Onrus. She also exhibits her paintings at her gallery in Hermanus.

ue to a high demand for entries into the 2018 Walk, the committee has decided that the registration process will take place via e-mail and NOT at the Registration meeting.

The committee does not want to compel any interested walker in incurring additional costs to travel to Hermanus to attend the meeting at the risk of not gaining an entry. This not neither reasonable nor fair. PLEASE NOTE: requests for an entry form can be sent to registration@lighthouse2lighthouse.co.za on the morning of 6 September 2017 at 8am. An entry form will be mailed to those requesting one. One e-mail – one entry form – one walker – one deposit. No group entries will be accepted. This assists the Registrar in controlling the number of entries. The ‘Registration Evening’ now serves as the meeting where every registered walker (who can attend), will view the presentations of the short-listed charities and vote for their charity of choice. It is still a very important meeting, but NOT to gain entry for the Walk. The registration fee for the 2018 Walk is R 1 750.00 per walker (non-refundable). The fee includes the following:  3 nights’ accommodation at Die Dam Holiday resort  3 breakfast and dinners provided by L2L Ladies Walk at Die Dam Holiday resort  Transport from Hermanus by bus, to and from Die Dam Holiday resort, to each day’s start and stop points, during the 4 day walk  Carry bag for 1st time walkers  Donation towards runner-up charity for the Official Practice Walk  Entry fees for National Parks during 4 day walk

Fundraising prerequisite per walker Each registered walker commits to raising as much funds as possible towards realising the proposed project of the Charity of Choice. Each walker attending The Charity Selection meeting in September will be able to cast her vote for the charity she deems most worthy. The L2L Ladies Walk set the group of walkers a target each year. The amount to strive for during the 2018 Walk is R500,000.00. Each walker is responsible for raising a minimum amount of funds to contribute towards the set goal, which is R 4 000.00

DIE LAASTE EN LEKKERSTE LAG. . .

E

Boston Breweries, proud brewers of Naked Mexican craft beer, are stoked to say that they have found a brand ambassador who is not only ecstatic about his choice of lifestyle, he is also extremely successful at what he does. Meet Tristan Roberts, body boarder extraordinaire. Tristan has been body boarding since the age of seven, and watching him perform in the waves you’d think he was born and raised in the surf line. Living and attending school in Hermanus was the next best thing: the lifestyle in that beautiful Cape town lent itself to spending quality time in the ocean on the doorstep of the Roberts family. The waves of Hermanus were Tristan’s mentors: there aren’t enough surfing superlatives or clichés to describe the moves he pulls as he shreds the wave faces. Even the names of the moves he performs can give you goosepimples: grabbing big air, inverts, backflips, air reverse 360˚s, el rollos – the works! The energy of the sea transformed into spectacular human motion – there can be no more visceral sport on the planet. Spending at least half of his life travelling the world bodyboarding circuit gives Tristan an incredible overview of the ways of the world, and this maturity is evident when you talk to him. Despite his success in competitions globally, he remains approachable and modest about his achievements; he talks more about the people he has encountered and how they have affected his life. His engaging manner invites friendship, and makes him the ideal ambassador. And talking about achievements… He is the current ISA Men’s World Champ, as well as the ASB Pro Junior World Champ. That’s World Champ, in both cases, in case you missed it. An incredible accomplishment for a twenty-year-old South African; but when you see Tristan carving his signature on the waves, you’ll understand exactly why he has reached these levels. He makes each wave his own, and like a jazz musician he interprets the shifts and moods of each break. Tristan jams like the pro he is! His schedule is packed with upcoming events, with three in Portugal and two in the Canary Islands looming in September and October. Tristan’s open approach to life is confirmed when he tells you that Portugal is his favourite destination; not because of the great breaks and Atlantic swells, but because of the people he communicates with. A down to earth attitude that belies his immense talent. he wheelchair entrepreneurs from Love-ability in Hawston were delighted when the Hermanus Business Chamber collected warm clothing and blankets and delivered them to Ability House, as part of their Mandela Month Drive.

“A very big thank you to the Hermanus Business Chamber for your generous love and support,” said Alda du Plooy from Overberg Wheelchair Association: “Your warm snuggly blankets and jackets donated to Ability House in Hawston where received with much joy!” Love-ability also exhibited some of their products at the Chamber’s Annual General Meeting, and business people were impressed by the quality of their work and the wide variety of items they produce: from handmade soaps and piggy-banks to Cement craft and mosaic-inlayed stepping stones. They even have their own vegetable garden at Ability House where they produce veggies for their community. The Hermanus Business Chamber is reaching out to other communities and invites any business person to join the Chamber to strengthen their voices. It is very affordable – from as little as R37 per month, and can be deducted from Income Tax as a business expense. At the AGM Chamber President Seth Anderson said: “The Chamber is growing rapidly, and many more members joined during the past few months. We address economic issues of concern and represent members at high levels to make their voices heard. In this way we have made progress in the CBD (Central Business District) regeneration project. Our key goals are representation, networking, and access to business opportunities and funding. We also do training and development via facilitators, and more skills development opportunities are being planned.” The Hermanus Business Chamber has been experiencing phenomenal growth during the past few months: 39 joined in June

and July! The new Membership Manager Dr Martin Fisher says: "Business people feel the need to work together under an umbrella body like the Chamber to have a representative Voice of Business when dealing with burning economic issues. They also like to network with other local businesses and support each other. Local is lekker and together we are stronger!" Contact him at martin@whalemail.co.za, or Alta at ceo@hermanuschamber. co.za. At the August Chamber event the spotlight will fall on all the upcoming Festivals, and how business people could benefit economically. “Hermanus is becoming known as Festival Town,” says CEO Alta Pretorius. “In August we have the Food & Wine Festival and Kalfiefees, September it will be the Hermanus Flower Festival, and soon after the Whale Festival. The Global Golf Challenge is also in the planning stages. All these festivals and their effect on the local economy will be discussed at our event on 17th August at Woodenways Furniture Showroom. We believe that Business, Tourism and the Overstrand Municipality should take hands in welcoming visitors and boosting the Local Economy.” Book for this festive cocktail event by e-mailing Alta at ceo@ hermanuschamber.co.za, or phoning 028-3151619. Cost R100 members, R120 non-members. Bank details: Hermanus Business Chamber, Standard Bank Hermanus, branch code: 050312, Account no: 082257833. Music is a reflection of society. Countless teens in the early 2000s found solace in the music of Linkin Park. The core of this band was vocalist Chester Bennington. He sang with real and visceral emotion; his lyrics were an outlet for personal anguish. His tragic suicide on 20 June has shocked fans worldwide and many are feeling a deep loss.

Sleep Is a Rose by Rhodes

Released June 2017. David Rhodes, stage name Rhodes is a British singer/songwriter. He has the ability to evoke emotion through his powerful voice and lyrics. This song is no different, simple, intimate and raw. His most successful single to date is Let It All Go (A duet with Birdy)

Truth to Power by One Republic

Released July 2017. American pop/rock band formed by lead vocalist Ryan Tedder and guitarist Zac Filkins in 2002. They have achieved huge international success. This is an emotional ballad inspired by and for the 2017 film “An Inconvenient Sequel”. The film documents Al Gore’s continuing mission to battle climate change. The band is hoping to inspire us to take part in the climate change solution. A noble cause, wonderful if it persuades us to make the small differences we need to make.

Count On Me by Needtobreathe

Single was released on 14 July by this American Alternative Rock Band. To date they have released six studio albums and many EPs. Although they were initially tagged as a Christian Band, their lyrics are not overtly religious. The lyrics do, however, often inspire hope and joy. They have several awards for Rock/Contemporary song/album of the year. Along with this song they have also released a single called “Waiting” which is just as enjoyable.

From Here To Now by Jack Johnson

The “King of Chill” released his sixth studio album 17 Sept. 2013. He has a pretty solid formula, be a happy person, play happy music and make people happy. Themes of everyday life over relaxing, gentle melodies and rhythms. A former professional surfer who lives in Hawaii, no wonder he has a super mellow vibe. Genre Soft Rock and Acoustic. He has produced several environmental documentaries focusing mainly on the ocean.

Post Pop Depression by Iggy Pop

Released March 2016. This is the eighteen studio album by Iggy Pop. (Real name James Newell Osterberg Jr.) The designated “Godfather of Punk”. American singer, songwriter, musician, producer and actor. Well known for his outrageous and unpredictable stage antics. His music has encompassed a number of styles including Rock, Punk, Jazz and Blues. His popularity has fluctuated through the years. Difficult to describe this album. There are moments of weirdness and moments of fun. Which kind of describes the man himself.

And now for something completely… A

the same

ugustus is so ’n tussen-in maand. Koelerig, maar die lente wink. Altans so was dit in die verlede. Ek laat my nie afsit nie. ‘O, soos Atlantis,’ wonder ek, bietjie aspris. So klink my ons gaan die hele petalje oorleef. Moenie my verkeerd verstaan nie. Moeder Aarde kry swaar, dis ’n feit soos ’n koei.

The more things change, the more they stay the same… which means that this August I will probably get the same urge as every year. Gearing up for Spring. No, you misunderstood. I’m not going to start exercising. You won’t find me in a gym… Over my dead body. Well, maybe you will find my dead body in the gym… Because that is exactly what will happen if some sadistic gym instructor forces me to do an hour’s aerobic class. I simply don’t have the time or the patience or endurance for such torture and besides perfect bodies make me feel inferior. There must be an easier way… Ah! I read in last months Splash about Refine’s new Lipomassage machine. Many years ago when I still lived in Johannesburg I went for LPG treatments because I had to appear in a bathing costume in a TV series. (I did say MANY years ago) Time for follow up sessions, methinks. Why don’t you try something completely different as summer approaches? Take up cycling, learn a new language, revamp that awful room that’s been turned into a dumping ground and turn it into a sanctuary for yourself… Oh yes, be green and go plant a tree – just in time for Arbor week in September.

MicrobladingEyebrows Also known as eyebrow embroidery, microstroking, feathering or hair like strokes. This is a form of cosmetic tattooing, referred to as Permanent Makeup, or Semi Permanent Makeup. Both these terms are correct and can be explained as the process of implanting pigment into the skin(tattooing). This pigment remains in the skin(permanently), but the colour fades over time and can leave a slight residue of colour (therefore being semipermanent). Microblading has become very popular in the last few years because of the natural appearance it can create on the brows. The process involves a hand tool with attached needles fused together in a curvilinear grouping. These needle groupings form the ‘blade’, which then gets dipped into the pigment and by drawing individual, crisp hair strokes that can be very natural looking, fine hair like strokes are made on the skin, implanting the pigment into the upper layer of the dermis. Not all skin types are suited for microblading and often the outcome will not be fine and crisp. In these cases, the technician must advise the client that the outcome might not be as expected and possibly opt for a different method of implanting the pigment. Skin types that does not work well with microblading are very thin skin, oily skin with large pores, very ruddy skin types and people with already existing eyebrow permanent makeup. For these clients all hope is not lost and a very natural eyebrow can still be created by using a machine with a Nano needle. The Nano needle is a very fine needle, measuring between 0.18-0.25 mm in diameter, the same diameter as eyebrow hairs. Because the needle is so fine it can also create very fine hair strokes. With the needle attached to the machine it vibrates at 120-140 times per second therefore deposits more pigment into the skin than done with microblading where we pull the needle through the skin with a single stroke.

Healed after 6 weeks

A question very often asked is: ‘Will it be painful?’ The answer to this is that most people don’t feel a thing. A very good topical numbing cream is applied beforehand and thereafter secondary numbing ensures that the skin stays numb throughout the procedure. As every persons pain threshold differs, some people might feel a slight discomfort; like when plucking or tweezing the eyebrow hairs. Another question I often get is: ‘What if I don’t like the shape?’ With every client, measurements are made and the eyebrows gets pre-drawn. Only once the client and myself are happy with the shape, will I proceed with the treatment. The drawing then gets marked with a surgical marker and this ensures that I stay within the borders of the drawing we decided on.

Before

Healed after 6 weeks

In terms of choosing the correct colour, a lot of factors are taken into consideration. The colour of existing eyebrow hairs, the skin undertones and the desired outcome the client wants to achieve. Permanent makeup always consists of two appointments. The first appointment takes about 2 and a half hours and the client then returns after 6 weeks to 3 months where we do the refinement treatment. We can now make adjustments to colour and method, after seeing how the skin healed. Most permanent makeup needs a colour boost every 1-3 years as the pigment fades over time. With microblading, yearly touch ups are usually necessary as we implant such little pigment to achieve such a natural appearance. It is very important to do your research before selecting a Permanent Makeup Therapist. Always ask to see healed pictures of their work. Make sure the procedure is carried out in a hygienic environment and equipment is protected with barrier film, gloves are worn at all times and the single usage of needles.

Are you ready to be smooth? If you struggle with removing unwanted hair, you're not alone. Many find it difficult to keep up with the time-consuming, ineffective hair removal treatments that they've performed their whole lives in the hopes of maintaining a hairless body. But hair removal doesn't need to be so challenging. At Refine Clinic, we've mastered the process of laser hair removal and stand behind it as one of the best ways to achieve permanent hair reduction. As we are all shaping up for the spring, hitting the gym and donning lighter clothes, we want to feel confident at the beach or pool without the unnecessary stress of worrying about embarrassing shaving bumps, razor burn, or worse – stray hairs which become very visible in bright sunlight. Laser hair removal offers four main advantages: • Comfort • Speed • Accuracy • Long-Term Effectiveness Laser hair removal is soaring in popularity – last year in the US there were almost 2.5 million procedures performed. Today it ranks as the fastest growing nonsurgical cosmetic enhancement procedure and is second only to Botox in numbers of treatments. The most common procedure seen for women in the US is facial hair while men are seeking a remedy to their hairy backs.

HOW LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORKS

ensure you achieve the best results possible.

We all know the drill: cleanse, tone, fine Clinic takes it Regardless of which area you're looking to de-fuzz, laser hair removal can help. In a matter of minutes, hair follicles are destroyed with minimal discomfort. Using highly concentrated energy, hair follicles are targeted and pulses of light are emitted. The laser's energy is attracted to the pigment of hair, the same way sunlight is attracted to darker clothing. For this reason, laser hair removal work best on those with dark, coarse hair and a fair complexion. However, people without this combination can still get great results. Everyone's skin is different, which is why we will customize your treatment package during your FREE consultation to

How Many Treatments Will I Need? We offer packages of 6 treatments. This is the average number of sessions needed for the best aesthetic outcome. Laser hair removal technology can only affect hair in active phases of growth, so several treatments are needed to affect all of the unwanted hair. Can I Shave in Between Laser Hair Removal Sessions? Yes. In fact, the area needs to be freshly shaved before your treatment session How Far Apart are Treatment Sessions? It depends on which area is getting treated. In general, face, underarms, arms, and bikini are approximately 4-6 weeks apart. Back, chest, and legs are approximately 8-10 weeks apart. What Will Laser Hair Removal Feel Like? Most people feel only a slight momentary “snap” at the treatment site during the procedure How Quickly Will I Recover? You can resume regular daily activities immediately following treatment What is the price of an average session? A standard bikini line is normally R595 a session and an upperlip, as little as R250 a session. At Refine we have customised packages to suit any budget. Visit Refine for your free Hair Removal consultation today.

For Women’s month: BOOK and PAY for 3x Laser hair removal sessions, and receive your 4th session absolutely FREE!... BE BEACH READY, in time for summer.

“Power to me is the ability to make a change in a positive way”- Victoria Justice Happy women’s Day!

During the session, many compare the feeling of the laser's pulse to the snap of a rubber band. Over the course of the next 1-3 weeks, the treated hair falls. The process requires a series of treatments, but results can be seen after just the first time, proving how effective even just the initial treatment can be. With every treatment you'll progressively see fewer and fewer hairs return. Finishing the entire series of treatments is crucial, as that ensures that you see the highest degree of permanent hair reduction. Stop worrying about the constant upkeep and start enjoying the freedom of silky smooth skin, year-round. What Areas Can Laser Hair Removal Treat? Laser can remove hair from faces, backs, chests, arms, underarms, bikini, and legs Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal? Laser can safely be used on all skin types from very light skin to very dark skin. It is best if the hair is black or brown, however, your provider will determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure based on a variety of factors

LIVING IN A

BUBBLE

hen astronauts venture to Mars they will leave the protection of planet Earth. One of the harsh environments they will need to deal with is solar radiation. Those charged particles streaming off the surface of the Sun can cause serious longterm health problems ranging from broken down DNA to cancer. We don’t feel the severe effects of this kind of radiation as much on Earth because we are shielded by both our atmosphere and the miracle of our magnetic field. Deep within the Earth’s core, molten iron is moving due to the Earth’s spin creating an electric current. Currents make magnetic fields. Make a really big current, and you get a really big magnetic field, one big enough to wrap around the entire Earth and protect us from the solar winds and the larger solar storms of subatomic particles. We live in a magnetic bubble, and it is at work 24/7 protecting us. Even though we can’t see it, we know it’s there. As far back as 200 BC, Chinese fortunetellers saw it and made crude compasses. Today, scientists like those at the South African National Space Agency’s (SANSA) Space Science Division in Hermanus have been keeping track with highly sophisticated instrumentation and global networks. NASA has an internationally coordinated fleet of spacecraft that watch the Sun and the earth as the space weather interacts with the Earth’s magnetic field. In fact, you can log into www.sansa.org.za and get the latest space weather! The Earth’s magnetic bubble diverts the solar wind around our globe, by capturing the particles and bending their trajectories along the magnetic field lines. Sort of like the way water in a stream flows around a rock. One of the more beautiful aspects of this global space dance is that every now and then some of the sun’s particles are channeled down closer to the surface along the magnetic field near the South and North poles. This causes a glow in the upper atmosphere that is known as the Northern or Southern Lights! So as the astronauts journey to Mars, we must devise some advanced way of protecting them on the 3-year mission. Not only will they be exposed during the 8-month flight there but also, while on the surface of Mars as well. Why? Because the Martian atmosphere is 100 times thinner than the Earth’s. What happened to the Mars atmosphere? We suspect that early in the planet’s history it lost its magnetic field. That left the upper atmosphere exposed to the solar wind which over millions of years constantly stripped off the upper layer. Mars loses about 1.3 kg of oxygen per second from this process and even more during large space weather events. When I think about what might have happened at Mars, I’m thankful for the amazing magnetic bubble we all live in!

Did you know? The whale shark was discovered off the coast of South Africa in 1828. These gentle giants can reach lengths of 12 metres and are known for their characteristic spots. But did you know that the spot pattern for every whale shark is unique, like a finger print? In 2002 a US diver and a NASA astrophysicist collaborated to modify the algorithm used by the Hubble Space Telescope to identify star fields. The modified algorithm can identify a whale shark just by its unique spot pattern, without tagging! Today, ECOCEAN in Australia and Wildbook host a centralized database for both professional and amateur whale shark spotters who want to help track and understand these magnificent animals. So far 50,000 images have been uploaded, identifying 8430 whale sharks by 5200 citizen scientists!

Daar kom nou weer ’n uitroep van:

t e o m y b g u r d l e r ” ê ! g W i “ d u o v n ee r e er ëls v

Regtig baie min. This outcry by Steve Hansen, the coach of NZ, that the rules must be simplified is the best example of why rugby battles to gain ground as a spectator sport in comparison with soccer for example. The game must be for the enjoyment of the players/spectators on both sides and not for the ego of a coach or a personal interpretation of a referee. The game is not about the coaches and the players, but about the game itself. It is about the intellect of the game, the skills of the game per position per player, the interaction of the players amongst themselves and the reactions thereto by players and team mates. A complex living organism which is talking back to us as players coaches and spectators. Fascinating.

The success of two referees is only because the attitude of the players and coaches change towards the game. They know that there are no blind spots and that two refs cannot be manipulated or intimidated. ‘Authenticity’ within the game had returned to the game and was reinstated. Everyone plays within the spirit of the game and if you want to win you will have to score more points than your opposition. As simple as that. Fair play is always the winner. Dit is so eenvoudig as dit.

Then I have not even mentioned the verbal communication of all the players intimidating the referee - the captain asking questions all the time. Since when is it the referees duty to explain himself to the players or to educate them on the laws? It is as simple as that.

That is then one of the major reasons why the development of the game specifically in the area of the tackled ball is in trouble. Illegal play that is allowed by the referees through interpretation. It stifles the game and the development thereof completely. Phases on phases are played with static advantage lines and static ball with defense on the front foot waiting for the attack. Stalemate.

The game of rugby football needs something different.

‘4x4’ equals off-road? Why would you buy something and not use it? Prime examples are exercise machines and fitness-cycles. The noble intention to get fit, wanes to the point that after a year or two these devices end up in a garage sale. There are those that pay a stiff premium for the 4x4 capability of a vehicle. Yet, as with the exercise equipment, they either never use it at all, or do not partake in off-road activities. Why? The elevated height and seating position does provide a sense of being ‘more’ in command and perhaps more safety. But then the greater height, being a much heavier vehicle also brings with it negatives such as slower acceleration, taking longer to stop and impeded road holding ability. The usual sales pitch when buying a ‘4x4’ second-hand is that the vehicle has been owned by a lady and has never been off-road. This is not the car to buy. Especially if you intend using it for 4x4. Chances are that the smooth operation of the 4x4 system may be hampered. Normally issues arise with the system engaging and disengaging correctly, as well as a lack of lubrication of the gears. This can cause permanent damage. Most real 4x4 owner’s manuals prescribe regular driving in 4x4. With all this in mind, the question still remains: Why do owners not use their expensive 4x4 vehicles off-road or even travelling on dirt or gravel roads? Logic dictates that 4x4 mode is the best way for driving on a gravel road. Perhaps it is fear of the unknown? Being scared that a situation may arise where it becomes

unsafe and you do not know what to do? Or perhaps that the vehicle may become damaged or bogged down? The fact is that today’s real 4x4s, be it a bakkie or SUV, are designed and engineered to take a lot of battering, before sustaining damage. Or perhaps with today’s modern off-road vehicles that have so many ‘features’ and modes, that the driver becomes confused. When acquiring your driver’s license, you had to learn how to drive in order to pass the K53 test. New skills were practised, learnt and acquired. Surely the same can apply to safely drive a 4x4 off-road. A dirt or gravel road is far more challenging and demanding than driving on tar. Tyre pressure needs to be changed. The correct mode needs to be selected. The correct and safe speed needs to be applied. The driving technique as to steering, braking, acceleration and cornering is completely different. It can be acquired.

Finally it is not about the type of 4x4 you drive. Your vehicle can become a fantastic tool to get to places that will remain out of reach without it. Use your 4x4 for what it is built to do. Put the city behind you and get into nature. Become part of nature. Whatever you do with your 4x4 – enjoy it, respect nature and remember – To off-road is to live! www.the4x4guy.co.za Somerset West 082 571 6568

There are many types of 4x4 owners. Those that never ‘risk’ it to go off-road. Then, a Hermanus resident, who has been to the Richtersveld and back in his brave Suzuki Jimny 1.3, towing an off-road trailer and a kajak on the back! Then the guy we met at the Middelpos hotel one very cold mid-August evening. Six punctures suffered on the road through the Tankwa. He wrote a letter to an off-road magazine. Apparently he drove at speeds up to 120 km/h. My first Garmin showed the following message when we turned on to this road. “Beware this road eats tyres”! Even the best off-road tyre would not have lasted at that speed. The safe speed would have been up to 80 km/h.

When Has an Estate Agent Earned Commission on the Sale of a Property?

T

his is not such an easy question to answer as there are a number of aspects to consider such as amongst others, the common law, the agent’s mandate from the client, the terms of the deed of sale, the Estate Agency Act, and the regulatory Estate Agents’ Code of Conduct. Perhaps we should look at this important question from the client’s perspective, i.e. When does the estate agent have a claim for commission from a client? And then of course who is liable to pay the commission? We need to answer the second question first so that the first one can be discussed meaningfully. Who is liable? This is usually determined by the mandate (agreement) between the agent and the party concerned. It may also be recorded in the deed of sale. As an agent is not a party to the sale agreement, he/she cannot enforce the commission clause, therefore a clause must be inserted whereby the agent accepts the benefits flowing from the commission clause. In the absence of an agreement, the commission is payable by the mandator. There are four aspects that need to be considered when determining when commission is payable: 1. Is the estate agent in possession of a current valid Fidelity Certificate (FFC)?

PAM SNYMAN

property, the agent would not have a claim for a rental commission as he/she did not have a mandate to let, but only to sell. If the mandate was to sell OR let, then there would be a claim. It is also necessary to establish what the terms of the mandate are, as a mandate could be specific in terms of a price and if that price is not realized the specific mandate has not been fulfilled. In the absence of any contrary provisions in the terms of the mandate an agent is deemed to have performed his/her mandate if the agent introduced a willing and able purchaser to the property after which a binding agreement of sale is concluded in accordance with what the mandator envisaged.

I know of a case where an agent A introduced B to a property by physically showing B the property, but B indicated that he needed three bedrooms and this property only had two. Other than that, B really loved the home and could afford the offered price. The next day B visited another agency and the agent C on duty told him about the same property (as it fell within his price range) but also showed him approved building plans to add a third bedroom. Agent C then enquired from a builder what it would cost to add the third bedroom as per the plans. B then made an offer minus the building cost through Agent C which was duly accepted. Agent C was deemed the effective cause of the sale even though he did not introduce the purchaser to the property…but it was his efforts that resulted in the sale.

4. Was the agent the effective cause of the sale? Now this is where it really becomes tricky! Unless otherwise agreed, an agent is not entitled to commission merely on introduction of a willing and able purchaser who concludes a binding contract…he/she must be the effective cause of the sale. This means that it must be his/her efforts that resulted in the purchaser buying the property. It could, however be that it is the agent’s introduction that leads to the sale…or not…

So you see, it is not that simple…agents actually have to work for their commission and cannot assume that the commission is earned just because they introduced the purchaser to the property! And then of course, they must be registered with the EAAB and in possession of a valid FFC at the time of the sale.

A PERFECTLY POSITIONED WATERFRONT HOME ON THE EDGE OF ONRUS LAGOON

Nowadays this is easy to establish as the Estate Agency Affairs Board insists that each registered agent must show the following sign (it is called a Privyseal) in his email signature. It is the intention of the Board to ensure that property consumers know that only registered estate agents whose Privyseals reflect the current date and time should be regarded as bona fide registered and qualified estate agents. The consumer can of course also ask the agent for a copy of his/her FFC.

The above applies to all acting estate agents with FFC’s and also those employees that work for attorneys as estate agents and who also need to be registered with the EAAB. If an attorney is acting as an estate agent, e.g. under a trading name other than the attorney’s registered practice name, the attorney also requires to undergo the relevant qualifications and registrations with the EAAB in order to legally earn commission on the sale of a property.

Hansie Oosthuizen Photography – www.hansiephoto.co.za

If any estate agent practices without an FFC (license) that agent is disqualified from earning commission and simultaneously disqualifies the firm that he/she is acting under from earning commission. 2. Did the agent have a mandate to sell your property? A mandate is an instruction to market and sell a property along with an undertaking to pay commission on the fulfillment of the said mandate. A mandate can come into existence either expressly, conditionally or impliedly and can be in writing or given verbally and be either a sole, exclusive or open mandate. It is thus imperative that property sellers ensure that they understand the nature of the mandate that they have given the agent and that the agent explains the possible consequences to the mandator. The agent’s mandator could also possibly be a potential purchaser. 3. Has the mandate been fulfilled? The agent would obviously not have a claim if the mandate that he/ she received has not been fulfilled. If the mandate was to sell the property and the agent introduces a tenant who wants to lease the

Dis net hier, in my opinie, waar die voëls dit baie beter regkry as ons menswesens. My volledige uiteengesette kwotasie volg daarna.
