As time runs out on 2016, it's nice to look back at what happened this past year. Andy Murray won at Wimbledon, the Queen celebrated her 90th birthday, Nasa's JUNO spacecraft managed to enter Jupiter's orbit earlier this year and Pokemon Go got everyone walking outside again. In SA we had our municipal elections, Wayde van Niekerk broke the world record to win Olympic gold, a new Springbok Rugby coach and of course all the news around our finance minister(s).

any years ago when I was a global citizen of the City of Gold, one of my favourite newspaper columns was entitled “Orchids and Onions” in which Ads were either praised or criticized. As we approach the end of 2016 let’s take a look at the good, the bad, the ugly, the pretty, the funny… In short welcome to Amulet’s list of Krismisroses, Kakiebos and other Uniquely South African Awards. Let me start with a huge bunch (sommer a bush) of Krismisroses (yes okay, Hydrangeas, ma’am) for Refine Anti-Ageing Clinic and their diminutive owner/angel/miracle-worker Lindi Prinsloo, who with the help of Dr Michele Emmett, has helped me take off years since I first started seeing her. Don’t miss the December Splash Edition for the Scary Before and Amazing After photos. The Fart of the year Award must go to Penny Sparrow who started a racial Facebook storm which we as the Rainbow Nation could ill afford. We’re coping with enough Baggage as it is. (Including our Top Heavy Parliament and Overweight crime fighting force.) Close on Penny’s heels we have the Sticks like Superglue Award which goes to Hlaudi Motsuaneng of the SABC and that woman who’s running (or should I say grounding) the SAA Board. The Cactus Award goes to our beleaguered Minister of Finance, Mr Pravin Gordhan for tenaciously surviving all the attacks and efforts to topple him. I wish to grant him a thorny cactus should he have the urge to insert said cactus up someone’s backside. And while we’re on the topic of public servants, I would like our rosegrowers to come up with a beautiful new rose, and call it Truly Thuli to honour our ex public protector, Thuli Madonsela. Thank you ma’am. You will be sorely missed. By the public that is. It is with sadness that we hand you a Farewell Bouquet. The Vergeet my niet-jie Award (forget me not) goes to the staff at the Department of Home Affairs in Caledon for the fine work that they’re doing. My new ID was ready within three days! My passport didn’t take much longer. No worries, I ain’t going nowhere, not with the current exchange rate (refer to thorny cactus award above). This award is shared by a woman at the ESCOM branch in Caledon (she’s called Q. No, this has nothing to do with James Bond, I simply can’t pronounce all the tongue-clicks in her name) who was most helpful after her not-so-helpful colleagues manning the Eskom Toll Free line left my friend, Monique without power for two weeks! That brings me to the Kanniedood Award – to all South Africans who choose to stay in South Africa and do something about making our beautiful country great instead of whining on the interwebs from across our borders. Vir die destruktiewe en brandstigtende studente van 2016 – die Verlepte Angelier Toekenning wat goed pas by die vrot pampoen en stukkende skoen op die smuelende ashoop van hulle tersiêre opvoedingsdrome wat in vlamme opgegaan het. (Diep raak ons nou – dis eintlik my kodewoord vir gatvol. (pissed off. ) En in dieselfde asem wil ek vir ons dapper brandweermanne die Fynbos Toekenning gee. Sterkte vir die brandseisoen wat kom. En jy, moenie eers daaraan dink om jou stompie by jou venster uit te gooi nie. Enkosi Award to the grey-haired man who tirelessly sweeps in front of Amulet every day. He never misses a spot. I hope your grandchildren are taking care of you Indoda. In stark contrast to this we have a swarm of screeching women in parking attendant uniforms who are parked on their backsides and deem it necessary to shout at the top of their voices at whoever passes on the other side of town. I get that in certain cultures it is seen as conspiracy if you whisper among each other. However, as you are employed by the municipality and therefore by the rate payer, as in Moi, madam parking attendant… I would prefer you to stick to the standard rules of conduct. Just because some hooligans scream at each other in parliament doesn’t give you the right to scream at each other during working hours and scaring customers and tourists alike. Klitsgras Toekenning vir julle susters. Hoop jy lees hierdie meneer die Burgemeester. Want op die oomblik kry jy die Budding Bloom award. Gevul met belofte en moontlikhede. Ek hoop om volgende jaar vir jou ‘n lieflike King Protea te gee. Currently the King Protea Award goes to all South African who showed their intolerance for corruption in the voting booths. Internationally I have to hand the The Stink Amerikaner Award to Donald Trump. Ek moet erken Hilary Clinton en haar man vaar nie juis veel beter nie. Nie veel van ‘n keuse nie, of hoe? Maar dan sit ons met onse president aan wie ek nie eers ‘n toekenning kan gee nie, want waar is hy? Miskien kan ons ‘n Missing in Action Award gee aan die man wat ons nooit sien nie maar wat agteraf ongelooflike skade aanrig. Soos die Malaria muskiet.

Aan al die Suid-Afrikaners wat hulle deel bydra om water te spaar gedurende die droogte…. Ek gee aan julle die Silk Orchid Award – lieflik, lewensgetrou en gebruik geen water nie. Daarbenewens word hulle nooit oud nie en hulle is bekostigbaar. Aan onse Springbokke – ai boeties, ek het julle so lief, maar hierdie jaar moet julle die Blushing Bride Protea Toekenning met Alistair deel, want ek glo julle voel ‘n bietjie bloserig. En Broserig. The Breath of Fresh air Award goes to THE NEWS which along with Splash is Free and also available at Amulet. It is also great to read the weekly column by Bun Booyens in the Hermanus Times. En hoe kan ek al die Omies en Tannies vergeet wat ure spandeer aan hulle briewe? And for those Omies and Tannies who complain that the newspaper is only in Afrikaans I will translate: The Kakiebos Award goes to the strongly worded letters of complaint on just about every minor issue. Without you there would be tons of poop on the coastal path and unleashed pets running rampant, it would be complete chaos.

Stink Afrikaner Award to Mister Pessimist who complained about the free Kwêla insert about Hermanus and in the same breath called Amulet ‘n negosiewinkel. Orchid to Hermanus High School who consistently produce incredible students and has now opened a theatre called Blêr. I salute you! And the Magrietjie for my maatjie Award goes to Monique Nortje who helped me with this article and who, without question helps out in Amulet when I’m swamped. How do you give a flower to the Overstrand? It would pale into comparison to the beauty she gives us every day from every direction. No matter where you look it’s a breath-taking horizon…. Die gedigte is op groot panele gedruk wat in rame van herwonne hout en glas uitgestal word, in pas met die “groen” tema, wat op vernuwing sinspeel. Die 11 gedigte – agt Afrikaans en drie Engels – is “Winternag”, “Die dans van die reën”, “Skoppensboer”, “Lalasini”, “Sonder betaling”, “Die oorwinnaars”, “Die spinnerak-rokkie”, “Di meisies”, “Ode, Addressed to the Paarl Composed on Paarl Mountain”, “Anglified Africanders” en “Love”. “Winternag” word beskou as die eerste letterkundig betekenisvolle Afrikaanse gedig en is aangewys as die gewildste Afrikaanse gedig nóg. Die drie Engelse gedigte het Marais geskryf terwyl hy tussen 1884 en 1887 in die Paarl Public School for Boys, vandag die Hoër Jongenskool Paarl, was. Die uitstalling word aangebied in vennootskap met die Eugène Marais Stigting in die Paarl, ’n organisasie sonder winsbejag met die doel om die lewe van Marais op ’n interaktiewe en opvoedkundige wyse te omsluit en aan ’n diverse gemeenskap bekend te stel. Die stigting wil op ’n hedendaagse wyse betekenis gee aan die herbeoordeling van Marais se prestasies en bedrywighede.

As with many of us I enjoy music across all genres. I do however think that those of us who have chosen to make the beautiful Whale Coast our home, have a unique taste in music. We march to the “BEAT” of a different drum, which does not necessarily follow the mainstream of popular music.

No Good by Kaleo. No Good is off the album A/B released 10 June 2016. The breakout single from this album was actually Way Down We Go which went to the top of mainstream as well as rock charts. Kaleo is a rock band from Iceland, who at times venture into blues and folk. There are several great tracks on this album including Broken Bones.

Good Grief by Bastille. This is off the Wild World album released 9 September 2016. Bastille is a British band who are not easy to put into a genre “box”. The best way to describe their music would be Alternative/Pop/Rock. This album has quite a few good tracks on it, including The Currents.

You Want It Darker by Leonard Cohen. This is from the album of the same name which was due to be released September 2016, Release was rescheduled to October 2016. Whenever it is to be released, I am sure that it will be worth the wait. Leonard Cohen is an acquired taste, but once you have acquired the taste you’ll remain a fan for life. You Want It Darker is a hauntingly beautiful track. Critics who’ve heard the full album, describe it as a masterpiece.

Road trip??

Originating from South America the alpaca (Vicugna pacos) is a member of the camelidae family. Bred for its exquisitely soft and fine fibre, the alpaca came to South Africa from around 2000. There are probably 4500 alpacas in the country but as not all are registered with Studbook it is difficult to be accurate on this number. Fifty active and progressive breeders make up the South African Alpaca Breeders' Society with studs and farms around the country. Demand for alpaca's light but warm products has grown significantly. Twenty-two separate classifications of colours and shades are recorded, making alpaca the most colour-diversified fibre-bearing animal in the world. Despite their gentle and lovable nature which makes them ideal as family pets, the alpaca has also proved himself as an effective guardian of sheep and recently weaned lambs, against predators such as jackal and rooikat. It is very difficult not to become addicted!

FNB W2W MTB Race attracts a stellar international field

Celebrating its 8th anniversary in November, the FNB Wines2Whales (W2W) Mountain Bike (MTB) Race has attracted a stellar field of international riders. International teams that will be shredding up the course will include German MTB duo, Karl Platt and Simon Stiebjahn of Team Bulls, German Tour De France heroes Markus Bauer and Johannes Fröhlinger of Team Giant Alpecin Kreidler, Team Investec-Songo-Specialized’s Christoph Sauser (Switzerland) with Sam Gaze (New Zealand ) and Swiss mountain bikers Konny Looser and Fabian Giger of Team BiXS Pro. Team Bulls’ Simon Stiebjahn and Karl Platt will make their W2W debut on Friday, 11 November 2016. “I supported some friends at the 2014 event,” says Stiebjahn. “It looked like a lot of fun and the riders only spoke positively about the route. W2W is special for various reasons including the fact that it starts in the wine region and ends close to Hermanus. The event perfectly depicts the diversity and loveliness of the Western Cape.” Another team making their debut in November will be Markus Bauer and Johannes Fröhlinger of Team Giant Alpecin Kreidler. “Konny Looser told me about the great route and event,” says Bauer. “I am looking forward to the trails and the wine. My goal will be to have a good time, while performing to the fullest.” Fröhlinger admits to having no MTB race experience. “I entered W2W because I was looking for new experiences and am preparing for the Tour Down Under in January,” says Fröhlinger. “W2W was highly recommended by a few of my friends. My goal is to gain experience, prepare for the road season and most importantly have fun. I am looking forward to experiencing the great sport of mountain biking, in a great country on great terrain.” A number of SA’s elite riders rate Konny Looser and Fabian Giger of Team BiXS Pro as the team to beat at the 2016 FNB W2W MTB Race. According to Looser, W2W is one of his favorite races of the year. “The event is well organized and features amazing single track,” says Looser. “I am looking forward to great racing at a high level, a relaxed and chilled vibe after the race with good food and a nice glass of wine to end off the season. My goal will be to claim back the title.” Giger has also set his sights on the podium. “I entered W2W because it is new to me. I am looking forward to a great experience, awesome racing, sweet single track and seeing some wineries.” The teaming up of Christoph Sauser (Switzerland) with Sam Gaze (New Zealand) of Team Investec-Songo-Specialized is sure to ruffle some feathers at the 2016 FNB W2W MTB Race. Sauser has competed twice at W2W, claiming gold in 2014. “W2W is one of the key events to raise funds for songo.info,” says Sauser. “We are proud to be an official charity of the event. Personally I love the characteristic course with its amazing trails, the atmosphere, organization and setup. I am happy to be riding with Sam. He’s an amazing friend and team mate.” According to Gaze, who is the current U23 Cross-Country World Champion, Christoph has told him a lot about W2W. “Christoph’s wedding is around the same time, so I made sure that I was able to race. I am looking forward to seeing the landscape that the Western Cape provides. This is a beautiful part of our world and I'm excited to see it showcased over the three days of W2W. As I have been Christoph’s student for a while, I’ve picked up on his mentality that we are always on a start line to win,” laughs Gaze. So what can the patient expect after the procedure? Immediately after the procedure the eyelids or mouth can be swollen. THE KNOWLEDGE THAT YOUR RESIDENTIAL ESTATE AGENT SHOULD POSSESS (TO ENSURE THAT YOU GET PROFESSIONAL SERVICE) When dealing with different professionals it is relatively easy to comprehend that lawyers need to know the law and doctors need to know medicine and accountants need to know accounting practices, but what about your estate agent? What is it exactly that you, the client, can expect your estate agent’s knowledge base to be? The four most obvious aspects would be the following: 1. The residential estate agent that operates in a certain geographical area should be aware of the local market conditions, i.e. the number of sales and rentals that take place monthly/annually, the average ages of buyers and sellers (so as to able to understand their target markets), the financial trends with respect to mortgaging and or cash buyers. 2. The agent also needs to be totally au fait with all costs involved in 2.1 purchasing a property (optional deposits, mortgage bond costs, conveyancer’s fees, Transfer Duty vs VAT, Deeds Office Registry Fees, Municipal provision for Rates and Taxes, possible occupational consideration and even the possibility of being held liable for payment of the Seller’s taxes if the seller is a non-SA resident!), and 2.2 the costs involved in selling a property (compliance certificates, Rates and Taxes clearance certificate, bond cancellation fees and possible penalties, estate agent’s commission, possible Capital Gains Tax if the property is not the seller’s primary residence, or even if it is, and the gain exceeds R2m or the size of the property exceeds 2ha). 3. A professional estate agent must be aware and have a good knowledge of the Acts pertaining to estate agency, property sales and ownership. This would include the impact of the following acts on you the client: The Alienation of Land Act (ALA), The Estate Agency Affairs Act (EAAA), The National Credit Act (NCA), The Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA), The Consumer Protection Act (CPA), The Community Scheme Ombud Service Act (CSOSA) etc. 4. Any agent should have an excellent knowledge of all the legal aspects pertaining to all contractual aspects of purchasing and selling, especially the terms and conditions of the agreement of sale in particular and the general principles of contract. Very pertinent issues would inter

alia be, e.g. ‘What is included in the sale?’; ‘Defects and the Voetstoots clause’; ‘Occupation and Occupational consideration’; Cooling Off Rights’; the timing of Risk passing to the purchaser’; ‘the meaning of Suspensive and Resolutive conditions’; the requirements for a valid Offer to Purchase and a valid acceptance’.

It is your right as a consumer to be served by an estate agent who possesses the above knowledge and complies with the Estate Agents Affairs Act in all respects, so don’t be shy to ask the questions. We will discuss the compliance aspects in the next issue.

k het nog altyd ‘n ding gehad met ‘n plaas. Dit kom van onthou jare tydens vakansies saam met my neﬁes op hul plaas. Ek het altyd gedroom om eendag met ‘n boer te trou, maar toe trou ek met ‘n Jappie, wie se pa ‘n wildsplaas gehad het. My skoonpa het my gou uit die slagkamer gejaag omdat ek onhandig rond gestaan het, wit om die kiewe. En met “ gaan gooi liewer vir my ‘n whiskey” is ek verewig verlos van my nuwe boervrou take. Bak en brou en slag was net nie vir my nie. Ek was verlief op die stilte, die natuur, die kerslig in die aande en die vele ander bekoringe van ‘n plaas.

Ek het belowe om julle te vertel van Halfaampieskraal. Hierdie verruklike plaas tussen lappies geel canola, groen koring lande en oop vlaktes. Enige “plaasdromer” se droom. Die werf is vol normale plaas aktiwiteite. Dis skaapwêreld ook, met wol as inkomste, maar dit is die groot trop wit ganse, wat soos soldate oor die werf drentel wat die vertoning steel. Een van die skaaphonde pas ‘n kalf op, terwyl die ander klomp honde hulle baas volg. Die 250 jare oue plaas gee dadelik ‘n gevoel van rustigheid, benewens al die bedrywighede. Die oop vlaktes skep ‘n skildery in elke rigting en ek kan nie anders as om vars lug diep in te asem nie. Halfaamapieskraal is ‘n gasteplaas waar “plaasdromers”, vir ‘n tydjie ons drome kan kom uitleef of sommer net rustig word en die wonder van die natuur om ons kan geniet. Jan-Georg, baas van die plaas, het die buitegeboue, wat voorheen ‘n grofsmid -werkswinkel en ‘n ou skooltjie was, omskep in gastekamers. Die gastekamers met klei mure

Op die slaapkamervlak kan jy uitstap op ‘n stoep om die uitsig behoorlik te kan waardeer. Hier kan ek bly vir altyd, so mooi is dit. Ek sukkel om in woorde die skoonheid van Halfaampieskraal te beskryf, julle sal self moet gaan kyk. Dis die kosreuke van egte boerekos wat jou na die hoofhuis lok. Met verskeie eetvertrekke en sitkamers om behoorlik die vyfster gehalte te beleef. Ontbyte en driegangaandetes word bedien, waar baie van die bestanddele uit die kombuistuin kom. Met ‘n gasheer wat ‘n bobaas kok is, word elke ete ‘n spesiale ervaring.

Die plaasstoep met sy mooi uitsig oor die plaas is omring met plante en gemak stoele, waar die Overberg se lekker wyne smaakvol en rustig genuttig kan word. Skryf dit dadelik op julle “bucket list” of gaan besoek die webtuiste om ook “plaasdromers” te word, soos ek.
