Home is Where the Heart is... Farewell but not Goodbye

E

ach month countless locals eagerly await the monthly Splash Magazine to be distributed to turn the pages, revealing fascinating articles, covering many topics, helpful medical and health advice, fashion and gardening tips, mouth-watering recipes and of course much more. Many don’t realize that SPLASH was born from a mere idea. It was only Mariska and Jean’s passion, love and dedication that created the magazine and allowed it to blossom from nothing to become the successful, glossy magazine that it is today. A long, hard, and tiring road was walked by the couple as they overcame many attempts made by people who were trying to prevent their enthusiasm and progress at what they do best. They worked through harassing phone calls and threats and through many unpleasant incidents, but

they kept on persevering and growing. Through all this they remained strong and grateful for all their hard-earned accomplishments. Mariska proudly announces, “We appreciate those people who gave us a chance and who supported us from the beginning, including those who later realized that we are here to stay.” Splash Magazine and its owners have achieved outstanding results and have given tenfold back to the community. It is an unquestionable fact that the public do not always realize how much work, effort, dedication, planning and above all love, is actually required to produce a monthly publication. The pressure and effort that contribute to the required deadlines, and the strain and demand to be consistent, and to improve after each printed edition, are all factors to be appreciated. The media world is not for everyone. It can be hard, stressful and very difficult... but in the same breath, very rewarding! The magazine has seen people and employees come and go in the last 4 and a half years. Jean and Mariska however,

supported their beloved magazine with unwavering loyalty, fully believing in its success. Mariska continues, “I am extremely proud of my husband and myself. We love each other and are the best of friends. We enjoy sharing our passion together. We have stuck together through everything. Now we can leave something special behind for people to remember us by and to keep on enjoying.” On that note it is with a sad heart that I share with the readers that two of the town’s most loved and respected citizens will be leaving our picturesque surroundings early next year 2014. Mariska and Jean have weighed the difficult decision to immigrate, as another business opportunity awaits them and their family. “We are going to miss our country, but we are also looking forward to the journey ahead”, Jean says. Readers are familiar with the high standard of their work and the fine quality of the magazine. Therefore it goes without saying that their chosen buyer will have very high standards to uphold.

SPLASH

Mariska and Jean wholeheartedly assure their fans and readers, that they will still find the magazine entertaining and of an outstanding quality. They will still enjoy a creative and inspirational publication on a monthly basis. They also assure the advertisers that they will be in terrific hands and that the new owners will be just as accommodating and hands-on, as they have been. Innovative, fresh and exciting features are on the horizon for the magazine and the readers and advertisers will be able to share in this new adventure. Mariska and Jean thank everyone for their support throughout these past years. Without them their dream could not have been realized. Their request is for them to keep on supporting SPLASH whose glossy pages will continue to thrive for years to come, capturing the essence of the Overberg. Please page to the Editors letter for a special message from Mariska herself. - By Maxzell Lerm Photo by Keith Murray 083 640 2028

Wat sê Afrikaanse skrywers van Kersfees?

O

Krismis daarsonder? On-voor-stel-baar. “Sjuut,” sê my vriend toe. “Hoor jy die stilte? Baie mooi. Dít is die klank van vredigheid.” Hmmm. Vredigheid.

► In dieselfde bundel skryf Essie Cloete oor Winterkersfees.

“Only as high as I reach can I grow, Only as far as I seek can I go, Only as deep as I look can I see, Only as much as I dream can I be” It is another dream come true to celebrate this summer with our December issue of SPLASH. Welcome to issue 47. This issue is filled with hot sizzling summer inspiration, information and motivation. Please refer to our “CONTENTS SECTION” on the left for more detail on what to expect in this issue of SPLASH magazine. Many of you might have heard the bird who sang the song of “farewell” It was as no surprise to me on how fast the news had travelled. For those who did not hear the bird sing or who might have heard the wrong bird singing, this is how it truly goes... Splash magazine is a dream come true as we can proudly say that we are the oldest monthly, full colour magazine in Hermanus. We also have the most printed issues as a magazine. We leave this dream behind as fulfilled and completed only to follow another dream. My lovely family and I will be leaving Hermanus, early in 2014 to live abroad where another business opportunity is awaiting us. We are very excited and grateful that this opportunity has come our way. We are sad to leave our family and friends behind, but we look forward to our new journey. We are also happy to know that SPLASH magazine will keep on filling the home of Hermanus for years to come as the new owners are ready to take on the joy and the pleasure of entertaining the readers on a monthly basis. Congratulations to the new owners! This is not the end of SPLASH magazine, but only the beginning of great things to come. And as for me and my family... ....Every story has an end, but in life every end is a new beginning. Till next time, have a SPLASH of a time. Your Editor, for a last time... Mariska Munro Du Preez Merry Christmans to all our readers! May this special time be filled with love and lots of blessings!

My label started in my graduate year of fashion design for my self-expression range which was inspired by all things young, free and no desire of growing up from where it grew in to Prettyoung Things by Thilana. Here are some of Prettyoung Things favourite trends for the holiday season

A summer loving season Welcome to Spring/summer 2013 and there are loads to smile about this summer with the latest trends in fashion. Say aloha to colour, print and the exotic. Get into the summertime spirit in tropical prints of palm leaves, flamingos and island florals. Make a bold statement by wearing these patterns from top to bottom or make these powerful prints the focus of your outfit by pairing them with basic bottoms. Colour

blocking and denim pieces work perfect with this tropical paradise look. Opposites attract. In Black and white, stripes and checks dominated the runway shows. A bold print on basic shapes in contrasts makes monochrome anything but monotonous. Pretty Pastels. It is time for carefree summer days in light dressing, candy floss and ice cream. Pastels have been a trend for a few seasons now but for summer it is still feminine but with a new edge. Mixing pastels with animal prints and sporty neons makes this trend modern.

elcome Summer with Prettyoung THINGS. Prettyoung THINGS is a young, upcoming brand that focuses on everything bright, fun and unique. This womenswear label focuses on versatility and creates ready-towear garments with a lot of character. My signature fabric is denim because I love it for its timelessness. I use vintage denim to create new garments. Every pair of jeans I use has a unique colour and natural wash which makes each garment its own. This upcoming brand enhances an individual style and personality for all fun occasions.

Denim is a definite. The modern way to wear denim is to wear different shades and textures. Try a bit of DIY for your holiday jeans and create your own bleach effect and acid washes. You will be fashionable in crisp, faded or printed denim. Prettyoung Things trend for this summer in Hermanus, Onrus and surrounding beautiful beaches is:

A Coastal Picnic We are combining summers most exciting outings in to one range; the gingham (check) picnic and the day at the beach lazing away under an umbrella. We are looking forward to New Year’s Eve’s perfect look. What would you wear? Our silhouettes for this summer are flare loose fitted tops and fitted bottoms Prettyoung THIINGS perfect pieces for the summer:

Pastel pink lace top with bows at the sides and a high waist light blue jean short.

A loose fitted flare top with a palm leave print and white inserts paired with a crisp white denim short.

A red and white stripe crop with a jean short in shades of blue.

Daisy short as seen at the emerging creatives, design indaba 2013.

A pretty white top with tropical details paired with a coral short with embroider flowers is perfect for n summer day. Thilana Blignaut

SPRING INTO SUMMER & PLAN TO MAKE A PROACTIVE CHANGE TO YOUR HEALTH & YOUR FITNESS BEFORE THE START OF 2014 BY FOLLOWING THESE 6 EASY STEPS:

B

elieve it or not it’s Summer time again and when Mariska asked me to submit a ‘festive article’ I had to seriously ask myself: how did this year go by so quickly for me at Proactive Fitness and what have we been doing to help get our members into shape for this Summer season, which has crept up on us without much notice? For me this time of year marks a time of reflection and planning for the new year both as a business man and as an athlete. Typing up these monthly articles for Splash Magazine actually helps me plan my year and give some structure to my business so I have decided to assist you in overcoming the seemingly enormous task of tackling your fitness in preparation for a new year whilst keeping a healthy balance of relaxation over the festive season.

► STEP 1: SET REALISTIC GOALS & STRIKE WHILE THE IRON IS HOT If you don’t set yourself achievable goals then you won’t have structure in your day whether it’s at work, at home or in the gym. For example, If you know that you are 20 kg overweight then set your goal for 2014 to lose that 20kg at all costs and do whatever it takes to achieve that goal. Someone once said the only way to eat an elephant is bite by bite so break down that 20kg into ‘bite-size’ chunks and try to lose up to 2kg per month over the course of the next year. If like me you decide to take part in the ABSA Cape Epic again next year then the only way that I can get my head around that seemingly enormous task is to say ok I have 5 months left to prepare myself so I have to cycle a certain amount of kilometers per week in order to prepare both my mind as well as condition my body for that upcoming race and if I don’t start today then it is going to set me back on my progress. Every day that you miss is a missed opportunity so if you want to start 2014 on a really positive note then start training today! Don’t wait until January like most people do, be different and start today and I assure you that 2014 will be your year for positive change!! Book your appointment to meet one of our qualified fitness instructors or to discuss your nutrition with Davonne Mostert. ► STEP 2: TAKE A BEFORE PHOTO & HIDE IT AWAY FOR FUTURE REFERENCE One of the most constructive things that you can do if you are not happy with your current physical state is to take off most of your clothes and take a photo of yourself. If that sounds weird then let me please explain. A photo is a lasting record of yourself and it will serve as a record to look back on to compare your progress in future. If you are totally committed to changing your body shape then you will see a change after at least 3 months of diligent training and after following the correct diet. We have used before and after photos of many of our Makeover contestants to great affect and the results when you compare these photos has been remarkable to say the least. Our 6 Mega-Makeover contestants

Short term holiday memberships available on request for students & adults!

have all had their before photos taken and when the contest finishes in January we will reveal these photos publicly to great affect because the daily change to their bodies may seem slow and painstaking but the result after 6 months will definitely be profound. Trust me, this simple photo thing will motivate you and surprise you once you reach your first goal and will set you up toward achieving your next long term goal. ► STEP 3: GET EXPERT ADVICE AND GET YOUR FITNESS TESTED SCIENTIFICALLY Whether you are young or old, fit or unfit, under or over-weight, think you know what to do or don’t have a clue, then please do yourself a massive, intelligent favour and seek expert advice from one of our fitness professionals and probably the best people to start off at is with Riaan or Michelle Schneider our two in-house Biokineticists who will be able to scientifically assess your personal level of fitness by conducting the Discovery Vitality Fitness Test Protocol on you. This test although it’s a physical challenge is not difficult and it will give both you and your Personal trainer the vital information required to design a fitness program that is specific to your needs based on feedback from your test. It will then also allow your trainer the ability to see how affective his/her training program has been on your body once you have another test with the Bio’s after 3 months of training. Believe me this is vitally important and just like the before and after photos it will provide you with irrefutable evidence of your progress in black & white. ► STEP 4: CHOOSE A PERSONAL TRAINER THAT YOU KNOW WILL GET THE RESULTS THAT YOU NEED This may sound obvious but it is important to match yourself with a PT that will match your style and your personality and for that reason I have 9 qualified PTs who each have a variety of experience and each of whom have their own unique personalities and obviously you need to get on well during your sessions. I assure you that they are all brilliant at what they do but If you are in any doubt as to who can get the best results for you then I suggest that you ask me (Mathew) to allocate a trainer to you because I

SPLASH

know each one of our PTs extremely well in fact I refer to them as my family and I can therefore steer you in the right direction. This is all about team work so we will all rally around you to get the best out of you because that is our passion. ► STEP 5: GET YOUR FRIENDS & FAMILY TO SUPPORT YOU Like I just said this is all about team work and it is pointless that you spend an hour a day sweating it out in the gym and then get home and your partner feeds you the wrong food because he or she hasn’t a clue what you are trying to achieve. It’s the start of the festive season so if you are out on the town be sure to tell your friends that you want to go to gym early tomorrow so it is important that they know that you can’t drink or eat too much the night before and that you ‘need to keep it real’ whilst having fun with them. So you can still have fun whilst you are following an exercise program without feeling like the party pooper! Share your fitness goals with everyone you know so that they can hold you accountable for your actions, maybe just maybe your self-discipline will have a positive effect on your loved ones and you will be regarded as a fitness leader, wouldn’t that be cool. ► STEP 6: HAVE FUN BY MIXING IT UP AT PROACTIVE FITNESS Variety is the spice of life and nowhere more so than in the gym. If your old gym routine is starting to become tiresome and boring then get a trainer to change it and show you how to use some of our fantastic new exercise machines to good effect. Why not try one of our many new fitness classes such as Spinning, Tai Bo, Pilates, Yoga, Body Pump, Callanetics, Reebok Slide, Stretch & Tone or Step Aerobics? There are so many interesting exercise options that you really don’t have an excuse for not having fun whilst you train at Proactive Fitness but if you don’t do it at least 3 times a week then you can forget about achieving your goals in 2014! Seriously I urge you all to join me today and reflect on what you have achieved in 2013 and if you feel that there is room for improvement then follow some of my steps above and decide

10.

to make a really meaningful change before the start of the new year and boldly grasp 2014 by the horns and make it your year! A FESTIVE FAREWELL TO MARISKA & JEAN I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you, our members and my fitness team a truly blessed festive season and I pray that you all have a wonderful time with your friends and loved ones. To Mariska & Jean Du Preez, I know that I speak on behalf of all of us at Proactive Fitness, we are going to miss you both so much, you are two of the most genuine people that I know and you have made such a positive impact on all of our lives through the publication of this magazine. Although we will all miss you very much, we know that you are going to have an amazing time in your new life in New Zealand next year, and when you decide to return to Hermanus we will all be here to welcome you home. Your faith is steadfast and your work ethic is without question and I know that God has got a plan for you and your family wherever you go, so follow your dreams and listen to His voice as He will always be there to protect and guide you. To the new owners of Splash Magazine, Peter & Wouter van Schaik we extend a warm welcome and we offer our ongoing support to a business which has touched the lives of many readers in Hermanus and the Overberg. Splash Magazine has added a touch of class to our town and we pledge to keep its readers up to date with all the latest fitness trends at Proactive Fitness and together we will keep the community of Hermanus fit and healthy. PERMANENT MAKEUP The festive season is finally here! With lots of parties, days at the beach, and spending time with friends and family ahead there is plenty to look forward to. However, the late nights and constant socialising can make us look tired and washed out. Makeup is great for hiding all the flaws and tired eyes, but having to apply this every day can become a bit of a chore. Luckily there is a solution to always looking your best, or to put it differently, ‘Wake up with makeup’. Below is an excellent example of what a huge difference a full face of Permanent Makeup can do for you. Arianne is not wearing any makeup in either of the pictures. In the After picture she had - Hair Simulation method eyebrows, Fine Eyeliner and a Lip Blush done.

By using Lipolytic in combination with a very low calorie diet you will lose up to 30% more abnormally stored fat as opposed to a reduced calorie diet on its own. ► What is Lipolytic? Lipolytic is a natural product that will trigger lipolysis (breaking down fat) and blocking lipogenesis (absorbing energy into fat cells) if combined with a reduced calorie diet. ► How does it work? The combination of the medication and the specially formulated eating plan will trigger the body to tap into your abnormal fat stores as a source of energy. By tapping into your fat reserves you will release a substance called leptin that will trigger your satiety centre in your brain and give you a feeling of “fullness”. Lipolytic also increases your serotonin (happy hormone) levels thus increasing your mood. The end result being: • Weight Loss (fat loss) • increased energy levels • Decreased hunger • Increased in mood ► Can anyone do the program? Because it’s a natural product it is safe and has no side effects. However you have to see your doctor to rule out any medical cause for your weight problem.

nter Refine Anti-Ageing Clinic in the Hemel and Aarde Village… Refine is here to keep our ladies and gents as young and beautiful this Summer as they will be next Summer. Refine has always presented clients with cutting edge age-defying treatments, often not yet seen at other clinics. Today we introduce two such procedures: The Silhouette Suture/ Thread Lift and the Original Dermapen. Refine has always prided itself with combined treatments to give clients the best results possible. The Dermapen stimulates the body’s own collagen production to give the face an overall smoothness and tightening effect. It can be applied to the whole face, neck and upper chest. Even the eyes can now be treated, whereas before, the roller was too large to treat smaller areas of the face. This Dermapen works beautifully with the Thread Lift which works in specific targeted areas of the face which are beginning to sag. The Silhouette Suture or Thread lift is a stitch placed under the skin and then pulled tight giving an instant lift with no down time…. Read on for more information on these two exciting new technologies: SILHOUETTE SUTURE/ THREAD LIFT

Somewhere in the world someone is undergoing the Silhouette procedure every 15 minutes. Why, we wonder, has this phenomenal minimally invasive face-lift not made its way down the African Continent? The Silhouette Sutures have been FDA approved since 2006, and are fast becoming one of the most popular treatments in Europe. The procedure is safe, minimally invasive and after an hour the patient can happily return to work having a tighter smoother jaw line and lower face-lift. The procedure is as follows: The Silhouette Suture is made of a bio-degradable Polylactic acid. A dissolving substance already used extensively in plastic surgery, ophthalmology and cardiac surgery. The newest Sutures are completely reabsorbable after 18 months, but the lift effects continue much longer. The Suture as illustrated below, consists of a thread with small cones. (These anchor the skin and hold it in the right position after you have slid the skin over them in tightening).

The two needles, at either end are used to introduce the thread with cones into the fatty layer beneath the skin. The skin is anaesthetised with local anaesthetic so that no discomfort is felt during the procedure. The whole procedure takes between 45 minutes to an hour. The only patients who cannot have the Thread lift done are those who are allergic to Polylactic Acid. This is very rare. The areas of the body which can be tightened and lifted are: ► Mainly lower face ► Neck ► Jawline ► Arms(Jumbo wings) ► And even buttocks, abdomen and breasts….though these applications are less common and require many, many sutures. The important realisation is that the Silhouette Lift is a complimentary treatment to other Aesthetic procedures. We generally treat the upper face and eyes with Botox; the Mid face (cheeks, lips) with fillers. Until now we have not been able to offer our patients a true lift for the jowls of the lower face and neck. The best that we could do was to add filler to the area between the chin and the jowl to create the illusion of the jawline being straight. We are in fact, lowering the line of the jaw with this procedure; and adding to the bulk; whereas the Silhouette Lift in fact lifts the jawline as with an invasive surgical face-lift offered by surgeons. There are currently very few doctors in South Africa accredited to perform this mini-face-lift. Dr Emett was lucky enough to attend a recent congress in Barcelona Spain and now holds a certificate on the Silhouette Lift Procedure. She foresees it quickly becoming one of the most popular Aesthetic Treatments given; due to the fact that the patient does not have to have the costs of hospitalisation and anaesthetic and that they can go straight back to work after the procedure. Refine offers complimentary consultations should you want more information or be interested in this ground breaking procedure. Like all Aesthetic Procedures; Refine Anti-Age-

Pack n Bake's Vanilla Cupcakes

O

nce the cupcakes of your choice have cooled, you can then spread a little butter cream icing on top, this helps your fondant to stick much better to the cupcake. Roll out the fondant, you can use any colour or shape that you prefer. I have used a rounded fondant cut-out with an embossed rolling pin, just to add extra texture. You can shape the fondant into many different shapes, the ones I have used are all available at PACK N BAKE. Now that your cupcakes are prepared, and your icing is ready, you can decorate your cupcakes as you wish. Let the season inspire you and let your creativity take over! Seasons greetings from all of us at Pack n Bake!

Gingerbread Cupcakes with Cookie Cut outs If you think about Christmas you get the smell of spices, like ginger. Gingerbread cupcakes are made with a mixture of spices, like nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon and cloves and topped with tiny gingerbread-cookie boys and girls. The rest of the cookie dough can be served as extra cookies. • 5 1/2 Cups all-purpose flour, plus more for work surface • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves • 1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg • 1 cup unsalted butter • 1 cup dark-brown sugar • 1 1/2 cups unsulfured molasses

Method: Preheat the oven to 160 degrees. Place the butter and sugar in a bowl and beat until light and creamy. Gradually add the eggs and beat well. Sift over the flour and baking powder and beat until combined. Fold through the milk and spoon the mixture into your prepared cupcakes pan lined with the cupcake holder of your choice. Bake for 15 – 20 minutes. Decorate as suggested or as desired! Happy baking

►1. Whisk together flour, baking soda, salt and spices, With an electric mixer on medium to high speed, cream butter and brown sugar until pale and fluffy. Add eggs and molasses, and beat to combine. Reduce mixer speed to low. Gradually add flour mixture, beating until just combined. ►2. Divide dough into thirds; flatten each piece into a disk, and wrap in plastic. Refrigerate until firm, at least one hour or leave overnight. Dough can be frozen, wrapped tightly in plastic and placed in a resealable plastic bag, up to 3 months; thaw overnight in the refrigerator before using. ►3. On a generously floured piece of parchment paper, roll out one disk of the dough to

about half a centimeter thick. Brush off excess flour and freeze until firm, about 15 minutes. ►4. Preheat the oven to about 180 oC. Using a a cookie cutter, cut out shapes from the dough and transfer to the parchment-lined baking sheets, spacing them 5cm apart. Freeze until firm, about 15 minutes. Repeat with remaining disks of dough. ►5. Bake cookies until crisp but not darkened, 8-10 minutes, firmly tapping down sheets once and ratting them halfway through. Transfer cookies to wire racks to cool completely before decorating as desired. ►5. Using a knitting needle, punch a hole in the cookie and loop thread through the hole and hang in your Christmas tree for a tasty decorative treat.

Chinese & Asian cuisine The Asian hospitality that Robert and his team offer is one of the first things that stood out and charmed me the most. Attentive, and ever ready to please! Their Chinese style Stir-fried Chicken was delicious! With is smoky flavour this dish definitely holds true to Chinese take-out! The Bamboo Roll, was quiet refreshing, with the cucumber on the outside. The Tempured Prawn sushi was lovely with a touch of sweet-chilli sauce on each. For those who love their SpringRoll’s, this menu item is a must! Fresh, crispy and crunchy, the vegetable Spring-Roll was so delicious! For all the holiday makers and locals alike, the Chinese & Asian cuisine that this quaint new little restaurant offers, is not only real value for money, but a great takeaway option. - Leigh Potgieter

Village Stall We started off with the “Scrambled Salmon” and were

surprised with creamy scrambled eggs, topped with smoked salmon and spring onions, resting on freshly baked farm bread drizzled with crème fraiche. Next up was “Red Velvet Crumpets”. Chef Petri served us the crumpets with rooibos & honey cream cheese, drizzled with syrup and a delightful touch of beetroot juice it tasted every bit as delicious as it looked. To top off our taste experience in the beautifully decorated Village Stall, we were served with “This Little Piggy”, in another of their freshly baked breads, this Ciabata roll was filled with honey roasted pork belly, blue cheese, pecan nuts and rocket. To complement your lunch you can enjoy a variety of local micro-brewery or “Craft” beers. This experience was definitely a feast for the eyes and the pallet! - Peter van Schaik

Celebration

I

n our family we insist on a double Christmas celebration. A lavish sit-down dinner on Christmas eve, and a more informal luncheon on Christmas day. Are there any other families as overzealous about the whole Christmas celebration? I suspect our eagerness stems from the fact that we are a “family of foodies", taking turns at demonstrating our kitchen prowess. Having said this, I feel that breakfast on Christmas morning needs to be a touch lighter on the butter. I am hardly a modest eater by any stretch of the imagination, but even I can't quite accommodate a plateful of buttery breakfast before the enormous Christmas feast. I do, however, want to make Christmas breakfast special and gather my whole family around me. This Spicy Christmas Cookie recipe does this for me. What's more, I suggest that you quickly assemble the ingredients the night before; you don't need to do anything more labour intensive on Christmas morning itself than preheat your oven. I get my boys into the kitchen to roll the batter into balls and flatten them with a fork onto a waiting baking tray, and 10 minutes later we cuddle up clutching cappuccino & cookies in bed, with the fragrance of sweet cinnamon & nutmeg wafting through our home. I know the recipe says “cool before eating” but we can never really contain ourselves that long! Happy Christmas. Speaking of Breakfast, if toast and jam is more your thing, I just have to introduce you to our NEW DUALIT breakfast range. Design Icon, Kitchen Workhorse Dualit's classic toasters are a design icon. MHP M HP has been established with one sole purpose and that was to make building or buying a new house an enjoyable experience. It originates from my own nightmarish experience in building homes using contractors. It was on one of these sites that I realized, building houses is not difficult and need not be a painful and wasteful experience. I realized with my background in advanced project management and systems development that a huge opportunity exist. The first important thing to do was to develop a system that takes the risk out of the building process for both the client and the contractor. Secondly it needed to be cost effective and efficient. In other words, provide the best quality product at the cheapest possible cost to the client. This could only be achieved through a thorough understanding of all the processes, administrative and building that are involved in establishing a new home.

Advanced residential construction & project management This is achieved through: ► DETERMINE YOUR OWN BUDGET ► DETERMINE YOUR OWN FINISHES ► BE IN CONTROL OF YOUR EXPENDITURE ► GET YOUR SAVINGS BACK ► TIGHT COST, QUALITY AND TIME MANGEMENT ► CLOSE SUPERVISION The business of MHP is : ► Construction of houses for clients or as completed units ► Project management of building contracts

That brings me back to principles of project management, namely, cost, time and quality management. If you can achieve those, you will achieve the above and make a profit while doing so.

KEEP CALM

► 1) One of the first responses came from my good friend and regular customer(and one of the reasons why I have a well-rounded, relatively wrinkle –free face) Lindie Prinsloo, who promptly ordered the entire content of the shop for her Xmas stocking! Thanx girlfriend I’ll give Santa a heads up!Okay Helene enough blatant marketing. But you can go check my Face book page – that’s exactly what she asked for. ► 2) Someone asked for a New and Fair Government. Sorry Anthony, I’ll check with all my suppliers but apparently none are in stock at the moment. Maybe we can import some from China? Oh, apparently they’re already here. The Chinese, not the fair government. Rumour has it we can try our luck next year around Easter? I believe in the Easter Bunny so who says there is no such thing as free and fair elections in Africa. ► 3) Huisie by die See. For my English readers: Little sea-front cottage. I can tick that one off my Christmas list. Yes, I may sound smug, but I gave up a well-paying stressful job that was slowly killing me for the privilege I’ll have you know. You can have one of your own if you are brave and fearless and living in the moment. And not fearful of where the money will come from. But then not everyone is as stubborn, idiotic and pigheaded as moi. If you don’t have that special place at the coastyet, you’ll just have to force yourself to travel to whale paradise every December. I can think of worse things to do.

Mag ek net weer sê: I told you so.

► 4) Room Service. Every day. Again I have to admit that I have that as well. I’m married to a Master Chef fan who loves to experiment and feed his family. All the time. Hence the well-rounded figure. Those in the know are aware that Percy also bakes the ‘bestest’ Carrot Cake on the Continent. (I’m just quoting another happy well-rounded customer – besides me.)

H

I also have the enviable job of being the buyer for the shop. My rule of thumb is thus: I only stock stuff that I love and want, but this year I thought I’d go for a more scientific approach and so some market research… on good old Face Book. The question was simple: What would you like for Xmas? The responses were as varied as you’d expect from a country with 11 official languages.

► 5.) Ridder op ‘n wit perd. Verwys na punt 4. Ek het reeds die ridder. Ek het selfs ‘n wit perd. Die perd is te koop. Die ridder nie. Well… everything’s negotiable.

By

I

LOVE peak season in Hermanus. No I’m not a tourist, I’m local. Well, I have been living here for six years now. I’m bracing myself for my seventh Xmas season so I reckon I qualify as a local. Actually I’ve been a local since the first time I came to Onrus on holiday – that was waaaaay back - when I was a rake-thin overstressed Gauteng money-making machine. Now I’m a well-rounded mostly cheerful individual with an erratic income and a sense of humor. (Albeit a little dicey at times, so brace yourself.) Throughout the year I have different interesting jobs keeping the pot and the bank going, but during December I have one job and one glorious job only – hanging around in Amulet. By the end of the day I can hardly walk… Chatting with regulars, welcoming returning holiday-makers who’ve become like friends and meeting new people can be tiring, but oh so satisfying. Luckily my awesome manager Talitha and hubby Percy do most of the actual work!

relatief is. Dis amper onsigbaar... net daar. Soos my vriendin Pam sou se, “We can wine and dine with this one”.

Servette Conduct. Suitable choice of execution.’ ‘n Selfversekerheid sonder vrese of jy reg is of nie. ‘n Vertroue en erkening van jou gawe en dit dan sonder versuim toepas, in welke gebied ook al. Hoe dit ook al mag wees, die feit bly staan dat dit ‘n gawe is wat bewondering afdwing. Dit laat die bewonderaar darem met ‘n lekker gevoel agter. Dit inspirer, moedig aan en verlustig die oog.

Green over your balcony and enjoy sky rise cocktails. Add colour and texture to any space or soften up ugly bare areas, where natural lawn would be seen dead.. in 14 different ranges suited to any budget, Our turf is UV resistant, chemical resistant so you are assured of years of low maintenance, perfect looking lawn that will make your friends, family and neighbors GREEN WITH envy.

Frequently asked questions: ► With such a great variety of natural-looking synthetic grasses, what are the most important factors to take into account when determining which style best suits your needs and environment? Colour, pile height, texture and traffic all play a role in performance and Our Turf is the only locally produced artificial turf specially designed for South African conditions. It is imperative that the right products are installed in the correct areas. High traffic, low traffic, absorption and use are all part of your selection process. Basically, the fiber densities and pile heights differ between each range, as well as the infill or non-infill systems. The shorter ones are hardier and tougher while the longer, more luxurious ranges look more authentic but are more susceptible to flattening. ► Can synthetic grass be used on soil with drainage problems? No. Artificial Turf should be installed on a flat, even surface such as concrete, stone or tar or a prepared crusher base to ensure that the base remains stable and the carpet retains its perfect look. The substrate should be flat, stable, well-condensed and pref-

erably porous to allow for drainage. If the subsoil is not sufficiently condensed it may shift and settle later, causing irregularities in the artificial lawn. An Artificial Turf carpet will follow the surface it is laid on and thus it is imperative not to take shortcuts on this part of the project. ► What is necessary to maintain the lushness of synthetic grass?Just like any garden surface, Artificial Turf will collect dirt from environmental exposure and from being walked upon. Simply scoop up any mess or dirt as you would with normal grass. Sweep with a soft-bristled garden broom to restore flattened blades to their upright position. A plastic rake and/or outdoor broom are ideal to get rid of leaves and unwanted dirt. A weekly brush is sufficient. ► Is synthetic grass suitable for young children and animals?Yes, our Artificial Turf is safe for children and pets. It’s made from antiallergenic, non-slip polyethylene. You can also say goodbye to grass burns as our Turf is made

from the same material used for artificial soccer pitches. ► What is the best way to keep your synthetic grass hygienic? Remove foreign matter using a spade, rake or broom. Spills and dirt can be washed away with normal water, as it is a hydrophobic yarn and specifically designed for outdoor applications, with drainage holes and UV protection. Never use solvents (rather refer harsh chemical stains to the manufacturers). Burns from cigarettes or hot coals from a braai should be removed as soon as possible, as they may discolour the grass. These can be professionally repaired but should be referred to your installer. ► Will weeds grow through synthetic grass? Weeds will not grow though the carpet as long as the necessary base preparation has taken place: a weed barrier and/or round up. One can however get airborne weeds germinating on the surface, but this should not happen if regular maintenance is being done. ► Is it available in DIY form? Yes you can purchase our DIY range at Super Plants Hermanus. For a Quality and Professional Installation? Please contact : Mark Tunley , Super Plants Landscape developers on 071 223 7375 We also supply and install Natural lawn, Buffalo, Kikuyu, Berea and many more outdoor flooring solutions. Dear Readers farewell & happy M

upcycling!

y name is Eddie and I have been ‘chatting’ with you about up-cycling and recycling for some time now. Somebody asked me a while ago, where the interest came from for this subject…and I had to think pretty hard to identify what made me have this ‘passion’ for old furniture and making ‘old’ new again. There are a few reasons, I think… The first reason, I suspect is that as a child my parents took me on an overseas trip and I can vividly remember the beauty of the old museums. They simply did not bore me at all. But, I do realise that this alone did not give me the answer to the question. I think….I think it had more to do with the fact that when my wife and I got married we were both students and lived in a flat. The lack of space simply drove us crazy. Then one day we heard about an old dilapidated house situated on a school premises. The Transvaal Education Department had bought two blocks of houses next to a school and had demolished all the houses to make space for a sports ground. This was the last house standing and it housed the contract workers. With the upgrade of the school now finalised the house was to be demolished. It was at this point that we entered into an agreement with the school. Instead of spending the money on demolishing the derelict house, we agreed to use the funds for renovation. The funds were scarce and we would provide the labour. In return, the monthly rental was a mere pittance…a bargain for a student! Due to the lack of funds,we did most of the physical labour and as each room was made “new” again, we realised that there is life after life for the old and derelict. We used the same principles years later when we built our own house. It only needed imagination to recycle or up-cycle things. I believe that with all the time we spent on upcycling furniture, that we decided to start TOMORROWS! So now the question…why this story? Well, life has a tendency to recycle us human beings. We do something and then something happens that make us look inward at what it is that we are doing with our lives. I for instance, started to study a Masters Degree in Business Management Coaching. Due to my own understanding of business, I had been coaching people in business. Whilst this was happening, TOMORROWS as a business entity was merely surviving. This we ascribed to the economic times we were living in. Then, one day, a client who was really struggling to make ends meet, made an astounding statement to me. He said: “Life has recycled me and I must accept that it is either an opportunity for renewal or I can allow myself to become unusable”.

"remember that there is life for the old in the present" SPLASH

37.

During reflecting on the coaching session, I realised how powerful his words were. The reality of the world is that we must allow ourselves to be recycled. We can only do this if we upcycle our thoughts and accept that our dreams are exactly that. For us, TOMORROWS was half a dream come true but the reality was that we were only going to keep on surviving. So, with these thoughts in mind we made a decision that we need to take the good we have experienced over the past two years, recycle the knowledge we gained, and refocus our attention on the way we are doing business. This unfortunately means that we will have to close our doors in Hermanus at the end of our lease period. To the people of Hermanus, we (Johan, Marina and myself) want to thank you for your kind support over the past two years. We will always cherish our time in this lovely town. We will always remember the friendship. We have one last message. Please…please remember that there is life for the old in the present. Your upcycling efforts will leave something behind for the generations to come. So from all of us…we say farewell and happy upcycling!

HERB HOME

O

ne of the world’s favourite herbs, with midsummer sprays of tiny, delicate mauve-white flowers that are loved by bees and butterflies, Lemon Verbena has a strong nostalgic scent that exuberantly perfumes the air whenever lightly brushed against. When I was so small that I could hardly reach high enough to pick those fragrant branches, my grandmother showed me how to pick a spray of leaves and immediately push it into a linen cupboard. This is the only herb that dries immediately without mildew.

Family Verb enaceae Species Alo ysia triphylla (=Lippia citri odora) Origin tropic al America Plant shrub Height up to 2m; space 2 m apart Soil a deep compost-fille d hole Exposure fu ll sun Propagatio n cuttings Uses culina ry, medicina l, cosmetic

► CULTIVATION Prepare a hole well filled with compost, mixed with a little good garden soil and plant in full sun. A graceful shrub, lemon verbena reaches about 2m high and benefits from heavy pruning. I keep my bushes about 1,5m in height and width, cutting them back twice a year – in April and November – to ensure a continuous supply of leaves. ► PROPAGATION Cuttings can be taken at any time during the summer. Select just the soft green tips, about 7cm long. Strip

off the lower leaves about 3 notches on the stem, then press 3 – 4cm into a tray of wet sand and cover with a plastic tent. Keep moist and sheltered in the shade for about 3 weeks, then remove the tent and never let them dry out. After about 12 weeks, transplant into compost-filled bags and put them into partial sun for a longer period each day until they harden off. When they start to send out side branches, plant out in their permanent position. ► HARVESTING AND PROCESSING Pick the leaves at any time of the year. ► COMPANION PLANTING Plant at the four corners of the vegetable garden to deter aphids and white fly. ► USES OF LEMON VERBENA •Culinary The intense citrus flavour of fresh Lemon Verbena leaves makes this a wonderful culinary herb. My grandmother taught me how to gently rub spanspek or watermelon with a handful of crushed Lemon Verbena leaves to enhance the flavour. I cook rice with a sprig of Lemon Verbena – the custards, fruit desserts, steamed puddings and cucumber soup never tasted so good! •Medicinal Lemon Verbena is used as a tea all over the world for digestive and nervous upsets, depression, headache,

38.

colic, palpitations and heartache. It also helps colds, bronchitis, congestion, cramps, nausea and tired muscles. A cup of lemon verbena tea will help settle a wound-up child. Use ¼ cup fresh leaves. Pour over this 1 cup boiling water. Stand for 5 minutes. Strain and sip slowly. Sweeten with honey if liked. Tie a bunch of leaves in a face cloth to use as a scrub over oily problem skin. •Cosmetic Our grandmother made a massage oil that soothed aching feet and aided circulation, and gave them the softest skin. Lemon Verbena splash, refreshing and cooling, is an invigorating aftershave or after-bath lotion that will help beat the summer heat and clear oily skin. •Other uses Use Lemon Verbena potpourri to scent and clear the air and to repel moths and fishmoths. Rub Lemon Verbena over the arms or legs of chairs and over tabletops to keep flies and mosquitoes away. Hang bunches of fresh sprays in stables and near kennels and crush those as you walk past to keep the flies out.
