arine debris, particularly the accumulation of plastic in the ocean, is of growing concern around the world. With the increasing use of plastics in our day-to-day lives, combined with their inappropriate disposal, the build up of plastic in the oceans is alarming. To date not much work has been done on the effects of plastics on the environment, but the little work that has been done suggests there is cause for concern. With this in mind, the marine debris project, otherwise known as “This Project is Rubbish!” is focused on marine debris in particular plastics. This project is run by the South African Shark Conservancy (SASC), funded by Project Aware and supported by Plastics SA. It was one of six winning projects from around the globe of Project Aware’s Ocean Action Projects for 2013. “This Project is Rubbish!” looks at two beaches—one blue flag beach and one non-blue flag beach in Walker Bay. Every week we go to the same beach and, using a GPS, walk the same line from the top of the beach near the dunes down to where the sand meets the sea. While we walk along this line, we pick up anything which isn’t natural, most of which is plastic. The idea is to see how much debris/plastic is washing up on our beaches and to hopefully identify their sources to try and mitigate the problem. We also endeavour to make people aware of the problem regarding marine debris and how they can help reduce the amount of rubbish entering the ocean. What a lot of people don’t realise is that even if you throw litter away on the ground, when it rains that litter gets washed into the storm water drains and all these drains end up discharging their contents into the ocean. Small fish end up eating the small pieces of plastic, and then bigger fish eat the smaller fish and the harmful effects pass all the way up the food chain. Plastic has even been found in the stomachs of whale sharks! With the build up to the holiday season and many tourists coming to our beaches, we urge people to be conscious of the harmful impact plastics are having on the environment and would like to remind people to please dispose of their trash in an appropriate manner.

CHRISTMAS…? I love winter. I’m built for the chilly season. I’m lily white and well padded – no doubt because my ancestors had to endure the freezing cold for centuries before some rebellious oupagrootjie decided he couldn’t stand the cold/ the government/his thieving neighbours any longer and got onto a ship and made the perilous sea journey down to deep dark Africa. Oupagrootjie and his clan had no idea that in Africa you celebrate Christmas in the sweltering heat with braaivleis and watermelon. Maar ons is nou hier… no turning back now… Blykbaar is daar net een plek in Suid-Afrika waar jy ’n Wit Kersfees kan ervaar – Orania? Ag nee wat. Nie vir my nie dankie. One day I’d like to spend a white snowy Christmas somewhere in Europe in front of a crackling fire, but given the exchange rate that won’t be happening anytime soon. Instead I have spent most of this year in Johannesburg. The city of gold and perfect weather. And daily mall robberies… Oops. Kinda puts a damper on Christmas shopping not to mention the Christmas spirit. I cannot wait to get back to Hermanus and my beloved Amulet… I am most definitely suffering from serious withdrawal. I kinda like living in the South where there’s always a nice little breeze to cool you down when it gets too hot. And if you’re really melting from the heat, I dare you to jump into the sea without a wet suit. Once you’ve lost the feeling in your feet, feel free to drop in for some hot chocolate to bring your frozen limbs back to life. Seriously, summer scares me a bit. I feel I should be out jogging, cycling, exercising. I hate jogging. I’m a flop. South Africans love the outdoor life – People from all over flock to Hermanus to jog, surf, cycle and walk their dogs. I see them in the mornings as I sit sipping my tea (two sugars!) watching the healthy world briskly walking past. I feel like I want to put up a ‘Joggers will be proscecuted’ sign. Stop making me feel so guilty. And no, the gym doesn’t do it for me either. Winter gives you subtle permission to feel down in the dumps. You can simply blame the weather. But who dares to be depressed on a beautiful summer’s day. Especially when the wind isn’t blowing. So buck up and get it together grumpy! My man het self ’n moeilike jaar agter die rug. Hy moes my aand na aand oor die foon troos omdat ek net heeltyd my tas wou pak en terugkom huis toe. Vra maar vir Percy - dis nie maklik om ’n vrou uit ’n swartgallige bui te praat nie. Partykeer het dit gewerk, partykeer nie. So vandag gaan ek diep delf en al die wonderlike positiewe dinge en mense in my land raaksien en uitwys. Die rede hoekom ek nog steeds hier bly en vir altyd hier sal bly. Dis nou behalwe vir die feit dat die oorsese lande nou nie juis oor hulle voete val om nog ’n middeljarige aktrise/skrywer/ winkeleienaar in hulle land te verwelkom nie. Nee ernstig, ek het geen begeerte om oorsee te gaan bly nie en hier is ’n paar van die redes. 1) Ek ly aan gesonde geheueverlies. Ek onthou net die goeie goed. En sodra ek aan ’n perfekte voorbeeld kan dink gaan ek dit hier invul. … Ehm…. Laat ek dink… O gaats… Lyk my daai geheueverlies is heeltemal te gesond. 2) Ek het ’n verwronge sin vir humor. Party mense sal sê ’n swart sin vir humor, maar dan sê ek net hou die politiek hier uit baie dankie. Want daaroor het ek beslis nog nie ’n sin vir humor nie en my geheueverlies wil ook om die dood nie inskop nie. Ewentwil (dis darem so ’n mooi Afrikaanse woord) laat ek terugkom by die positiewe redes hoekom Suid-Afrika my gunsteling land is. 3) Baie van ons TV programme is skreeusnaaks. Gewoonlik vir die verkeerde redes, maar snaaks is snaaks, maak nie saak hoekom nie. Hier kan ek wel ’n voorbeeld noem. TV Nuus: Ernstige storie. Gedenkdiens vir ontslape soldate in die Kongo. Arriving at Gabrielskloof, one drives through the vineyards and olive orchards.

We kicked off the day with a tasting, comprising of an intimate selection of wines, olives and olive oil. The food experience started with bobotie springrolls, pork terrine and smoked snoek. The bobotie springrolls had a sweet curry taste with a crunch from the spring roll, perfect combination. The pork terrine, just amazing, was served with a ginger jelly and raison melba toast. The ginger jelly complimented the pork terrine in a way I have never experienced. My taste buds went crazy. Then we had snoek and patat croquettes. The snoek is smoked with Rooibos tea and served on a corn fritter topped with avocado salsa. The taste of rooibos and the sweetness of the corn made me feel right at home. That was just the starters… slow roasted pork belly, free range duck legs and a 28-day matured Sirloin. The kabeljou was served with new potatoes accompanied with broad bean and pea shoot salad, and red pesto to round off the dish. The Duck leg was served with duck-andRavioli being a new taste for me, I matured sirloin was served on a potato and onion bake and crispy onion rings; a beautiful mushroom sauce. All the elements on the plate complimented the perfectly cooked sirloin. The slow roasted pork belly was served on gem squash, mashed potatoes and topped with an apple and caramelized onion. This beautifully presented dish was my favourite dish of the day! The selection of desserts makes it next to impossible to choose. After a lot of consideration, we decided on the Lindt dark chocolate fondant and the Crème Brulee. The chocolate fondant speaks for itself, deliciously yummy best describes what it tastes like. The crème brulee is an all-time favourite with its perfectly crisp top and creamy inside. Then we were served a surprise from the chef… home-made ice cream: vanilla pod, chocolate mousse, berry compote and rum-and-raison (adults only). The ice cream was my favourite; What a day! One of their best sellers is the beer batter deepfried hake and calamari with fries – and do they know how to make fries! The best you will ever come across. The calamari was so soft it melted in our mouth. The Caprese Salad with smoked mozzarella & focaccia or the Smoked Salmon Trout Salad with steamed greens, caper berries, croutons and sour cream dressing makes for a perfect meal on hot summer days. The Caprese Salad was full of flavour, with basil pesto & fresh tomato. The Smoked Salmon Trout Salad with the almond flake & croutons; this was picture perfect, I love a salad with a crunch, that’s what we received. This is a must try. Their menu is quite extensive and caters to all tastes, even sporting traditional dishes such as Bobotie and Pancakes with milk tart filling. A meal for every occasion.

Whilst feasting on chef Rudolf’s magnificent creations, I could not help but think of Ernest Hemmingway’s, A Moveable Feast: “As I ate the oysters with their strong taste of the sea and their faint metallic taste that the cold white wine washed away, leaving only the sea taste and the succulent texture, and as I drank their cold liquid from each shell and washed it down with the crisp taste of the wine, I lost the empty feeling and began to be happy and to make plans.”

Rooi verteenwoordig eerstens die bloed van Jesus. Die ryk kleur verwys na die kuns van liefde gee, ons menslikheid teenoor mekaar en die bewuswording van ons menseverhoudinge. Die opregtheid en egtheid wat binne almal van ons is. Die liefde wat heers in ons verhoudinge. Rooi verteenwoordig krag en rykdom met vooruitgang wat ons mekaar gun. ‘n Oorvloed vir almal. Dit bind ons saam, kinders van God, broers en susters. Ek het rooi fluweel as tafeldoek gebruik en dit om ‘n kersboom gedrapeer, as simbool van verbinding teenoor mekaar. Die rooi strik om die messegoed maak ons familie, hou ons bymekaar.

Ek het besluit om my kersfeestafel te stileer in verskillende tafelplasings, om die kleur simbole van Kersfees uit te beeld en elemente te gebruik met betekenis. My tafelplasings bestaan uit rooi, groen, wit en goud.

Groen Goen is die kleur van lewe, ewige lewe van Jesus. Dit herhinner ons daaraan om elke dag ons eie lewe te vereer. Dankbaarheid te betoon vir wat ons het en daagliks ontvang. Groen maak ons bewus dat daar vooruitgang bestaan met nuwe moontlikhede dat wanneer dit nie met ons goed gaan nie, daar ook ‘n einde sal wees met ‘n nuwe begin. Groen gee hoop, verwys na somer en ons eie groei as mens. Verteenwoordig die sirkel van lewe en ons geestelike welvaart. Die oorwinning van lewe oor die dood. Die mistiek van die lewe soos ons dit daagliks ervaar. Die engele waak oor my groen tafel en dra ‘n boodskap oor aan my gaste van liefde en geluk.

Wit simboliseer vrede en gemoedsrus. Vergifnis teenoor ander en onsself. Ons reinheid, met die vergifnis van sondes. Wit beeld God se lig en heiligheid uit. Dit verwys na geluk en gelukkig wees in ons lewe en gee ons veiligheid. Dit is simboliek van God se vertroue. Ek het “vintage” lappies en Franse kant gebruik vir my stileering. Die ronde vet kerse en skulpballe verteenwoordig die lig en vrede van God. Ek vereer ook met die brandende kerse, my mooi herinneringe aan vriende wat gesterf het.

Goud was deur die wyse manne geskenk aan die klein baba Jesus. Goud is die kleur van die son en warmte in ons harte, dis die kleur van gee. Goud verteenwoordig rykdom met wysheid in ons lewe, verwys na die koningkryk en die hemelse Koning. Ek het glasware en silver gebruik, om n koninklike tafel te skep. Geverfde drywe blare ingespan as ryk goue versierings.

My kersboom is ‘n “topiary” van ivy, versier met geverfde dennebolle en feetjieliggies. Die simboliek van die ivy is dat die plant nodig het om aan iets vas te klou, soos ons moet onthou om aan God vas te hou vir bystand en liefde.

5 Potential Pitfalls with Used Car Purchasing

Dashboard Lights is seeing dashboard lights on. The most common light to see is the check engine light. SUMMARY: 2014 FNB W2W MTB Events T

he FNB Wines2Whales (W2W) Mountain Bike (MTB) Events were the cause of much excitement in the Western Cape in November this year. Taking the form of a three day stage race, participants could choose between the fun-filled FNB W2W MTB Adventure, a slightly more relaxed FNB W2W MTB Ride and the action-packed FNB W2W MTB Race. Starting in the Winelands of Somerset West, teams of two riders (male/female/mixed) crossed through (and over) 13 wineries, 26 private farms, six mountains, historic roads and mountain passes, nature conservation areas (including the Kogelberg Biosphere) before finishing within sight of the famous whales of Hermanus! Just under 5000 eager MTB enthusiasts toed the line over the period of the three events to be part of the action. Each event was faced with very different weather conditions. On day one, FNB W2W MTB Adventure participants had a serious battle with the Cape Doctor, while FNB W2W MTB Ride participants had to contend with rain and FNB W2W MTB Race riders had to overcome the heat. Christoph Sauser and Konny Looser of Team Meerendal-SONGO-Specialized/Wheeler claimed two stage victories and the overall men’s champions’ title at the 2014 FNB W2W MTB Race completing the three day MTB stage race in a lightning fast time of 08 hours 36 minutes 29 seconds. “It’s great to win my first Wines2Whales Race,” said Sauser. “In the past I’ve entered as part of a corporate team, while last year I rode with Sipho Madolo. We managed a 5th place overall. Everything came together for Konny and me this year. Every race is different. I like the character of Wines2Whales. Three days of real trail riding, not to mention starting in the Winelands and ending by the sea. It’s very cool”. Rourke Croeser and Travis Walker of Kargo Pro Team came in second, while Johann Rabie and Gawie Combrinck of Team EAI Cycling finished third. Robyn De Groot and Catherine Williamson of Team Biogen Toyota / Asrin Cycling claimed the women’s team title completing the three days of racing in a combined time of 10 hours 08 minutes 03 seconds. Jennie Stenerhag and Candice Neethling of Team Cape Brewing Company / Time freight Velolife claimed the second spot on the podium, while Anriette Schoeman and Yolandi Du Toit of Team Africa Silks Garmin finished third. Ashleigh Moolman and Darren Lill of Team Cannondale Blend powered by RED-E secured the overall mixed team champions’ title completing the three MTB stages in a combined time of 10 hours 13 minutes 44 seconds. Mariske Strauss and Hannes Hanekom of Team Giant/Orange Monkey came in second, while Fienie and Kobus Barnard of Team Kromco1 finished third.

aragliding started in Europe in the late 1970s when enthusiasts and ex-military men were trying to maintain height and essentially fly with their parachutes which were originally designed for controlled decent only. By the early 1980s Hermanus already had primitive paragliders being flown off Rotary way and landing on the High School fields. Like all technology these days, ours is developing at a rapid rate too. Gliders are becoming safer, lighter, and stronger and can achieve better performance in height, distance and duration in the air than ever before.

Paragliding is hugely diverse in that you can fly solo wings, share flight through tandems, there is adrenalin packed acrobatic paragliding, simple safe soaring on hills or long distance cross country flying on thermals and vast majestic mountain ranges. You can be a social pilot or if the bug bites enough there are numerous national and international competitions covering the various aspects of the sport. You can fly on your lunch break, (if you have a site close enough?) or you can spend an entire day in the skies and some pilots even fly for a living. On a good day pilots can launch above the high school, fly to Hawston and back, Stanford and back to Caledon and even Riviersonderend or simply stay and play on our 7km ridge, and yes, we land back up on top of the hill exactly where we launched from. Paragliding is one of the most liberating and exhilarating experiences the

modern sporting world has to offer. I have deep sea dived, sky-dived, surfed, road cycled, mountain biked, water skied, snow skied, golfed and played all the school based sports on offer and can honestly say nothing compares to free flight. Flight has been a dream of mankindâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s since time gone by and we are finally able to achieve extensive distances and sustainable heights without noisy, smelly and sometimes unreliable motors. We use only the fresh air around us and the knowledge gained from every previous flight to go further, get higher and stay up longer.
