BOUNCE
extraordinary
I’ve been blatantly eavesdropping in the shop and I’ve garnered enough info to conclude that apparently 2015 was the worst year ever! Kyk by jou venster uit… Dis ‘n lieflike dag buite. So what as dit reën… Amper Kersfees… Die tyd wat mens moet soppy raak… Apologies to my faithful English readers… In short I’ve been waxing lyrical about the beautiful place we live in… and bemoaning the fact that the rand is worth nothing, which of course is a plus for all our overseas visitors.
different
Most of us have had a hell of a year. My advice? Put 2015 firmly behind you, take a deep breath, Keep calm and carol on. Breathe… You will find a parking space soon. ☺ And to all our visitors, welcome in paradise… where, trust me, the small shops are the real deal. You will find unique stuff, once off magical pieces never to be found again. Throw caution to the wind, forget about your crappy year, tis the silly season. The season to spoil the special people in your life but most importantly time to also spoil yourself for a change! That way you know you’ll like at least one gift on Xmas Day. Interesting trend this year. A black and white Christmas. With a touch of gold. Mmmm. I like. By now you know that I don’t settle for ordinary. Are you brave enough to go for it this year? Don’t worry, I’m stocking green and red for the more traditional customers… No point in just catering for my own taste, is there? Just because I’m different doesn’t mean I’m stupid. As we countdown the last days of the hottest year of the past decade, my darling daughter (who is leaving home to study next year – oh my aching heart) asks me what I want for Christmas… Mmmm, nothing blue and white, that’s for sure. ☺ Surprise me!
My friend Monique moved here from Johannesburg a few months ago and is still getting used to the beauty of the Overberg. (and the over-eager security services, but more about that in the next issue) As a birthday treat she insisted on taking me on a road trip to Arniston. Seeing as she’s going to help me write the next series of Swartwater (once the SABC gets its act together) I reckoned I should go show her the beautiful places where the first series was shot. And as always, I also grabbed the opportunity of stopping at all the little towns on the way in the hope of picking up some original pieces for Amulet. Lately every second house on the main road through a small village has become an ‘antique’ store. (I.e. the rubbish in their garage is up for sale) My car was empty, my wallet full. My shopping enthusiasm high. No luck at the first two places. Seriously overpriced and kinda ugly. At the second place the woman was so angry that we didn’t buy any of her fake vintage items she threatened to charge us an entrance fee for only looking. Sjoe, antie. I’m glad to report that we got lucky in Bredasdorp. Among some other treasures I found a fabulous art deco brass standing lamp which I’m hoping will work with some funky lampshades I acquired last week. Now that we’ve expanded, I finally have enough space to showcase my new range of wall hangings and cushions to die for. Best of all - they’ve been designed, printed and made right here in South Africa… it’s hard to describe their magical quality, you’ll have to come see for yourself. They’re gorgeous and of course, very different. One good thing about the sinking rand… It’s becoming too expensive to import – even from China… local products are becoming competitive. Jaaaayyyyy! Nothing made in China can ever compare with our unique South African spirit. I have to admit this has been a really tough year to source items that are different. It’s as if the world is in limbo… too stunted/scared to do anything exciting or daring… Everyone’s holding their collective breaths for… what? Another recession? At the trade fairs every supplier’s stuff looks exactly the same as the next… Notably navy blue and white. Full stop. Nothing wrong with blue and white, but seriously? Nothing else? Just blue and white? Look around you. See how many people (notably the women) are wearing navy blue stripes and white… Which is okay if you want to look like everyone else… it’s safe. It’s conventional. A bit predictable, don’t you think? Just putting it out there… (Don’t worry I have a couple shelves with blue and white stuff in the shop as well.) And the most beautiful range of soft white cool cottons – also made in South Africa.

I can’t take credit for the above, the incredibly stylish and fearless Coco Chanel said that, but it’s the rule that I live by. Not the easy route to choose… People don’t like different, it intimidates them and they find it suspicious… and you’re probably wondering what I’m getting at? Frankly I have no idea… All I know is that I started this article talking about Christmas cheer and joy and then realized, ag nee wat, I’m not really into Jingle bells and fake snow… and ho, ho, ho… Well, maybe the ho, ho, ho could work for me but then the joke must be really funny.

Hallo almal
‘n Mooi storie
Hierdie privaatskool is vanjaar begin. Op ‘n vraag waarom mens meer as een taal moet leer praat, was die antwoord: “because it is good for your brain” en “because you understand and like other people better”.

Lighthouse ladies I
going from strength to strength
n the last 10 years they have raised more than R1,6 million and committed themselves to hiking over 1,000 km along some of South Africa’s most rugged, desolate and incredibly beautiful coastline. Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse (L2L) is a group of 80 Overstrand women who walk 100 km from Cape Agulhas to Danger Point, near Gansbaai, over four days raising money for various charities from corporate and private sponsors. The first L2L walk in 2006 comprised just 10 women who raised R10,000 for Cansa. The group’s fundraising initiatives have grown exponentially since then and last year R 417 000 was handed to the Hermanus Night Shelter L2L committee member Lindi Prinsloo, owner of Refine aesthetic clinic, says the Clive Prins Drug Intervention Programme was chosen to be the main beneficiary for the 2016 walk. In 2014 the The Sustainable Futures Trust (SFT) identified a real need regarding substance abuse and the lack of a treatment programme in the town of Hermanus. Local school principals reported to the Western Cape Education Circuit 2 Manager, Ms Wendy Colyn, that urgent intervention was needed for 178 identified learners in Hermanus who were misusing drugs. At the same time Abagold approached Ms Colyn to establish an intervention programme in memory of an employee who had been stabbed to death. The Clive
Prins Youth Substance Treatment Programme, with the blessing of the Mayor, was therefore launched by SFT with seed funding from Abagold in May 2015. At school level they are seeing: declining academics, violence, crime, self harm, absenteeism, poaching, teen pregnancy, alcoholism and HIV/AIDS increasing because of addiction. They are the only organisation in Hermanus with a clear plan of how to approach and treat the problem of alcohol and drug addiction among our youth. Their aim is to: reduce and manage the youth’s addiction issue; provide counselling and support for both the youth and their families; educate and support the community. The long term vision of the SFT is to significantly reduce substance abuse amongst the youth in the entire Overstrand region. “Our youth, without help, have no future” says Prinsloo, who is looking forward to embarking on her fifth L2L walk. A secondary beneficiary is also selected and receives money raised during one of the practice walks, involving the community and anyone interested in walking and raising a minimum of R100 each. In 2015, this beneficiary was the Overberg Wheelchair Association, which received over R7000 . The 2nd beneficiary for 2016 was chosen as the Hermanus Rainbow Trust, and the Lighthouse ladies will do their best in raising much needed funds for this organisation. L2L treasurer, Elaine Bayer, co-owner of The Beanery, says companies and local businesses are encouraged to donate a minimum of R300, for which they can claim tax exemption.
SPLASH 6
“We are encouraging Hermanus businesses to open up and help us meet our target, as this is for a very good cause, says Bayer, who is looking forward to her fourth L2L. “People do the Lighthouse 2 Lighthouse for different reasons. Some want to get away from their children,” she jokes. “Others have a spiritual reason or want to give something back. Some have lost loved ones or recently moved to the area and want to meet people. I love the camaraderie, the sense of purpose, the deserted and extremely beautiful coastline.” Prinsloo agrees: “It is a big challenge, but you become a family, and this helps you keep going.” If you are interested in donating to the L2L cause, Kindly make donations to: Acc Name: Lighthouse Ladies Bank details: ABSA, Hermanus Acc nr: 9276889845 Branch Code 334812 Use your name or Business name as reference.

Supporting the body
through nutrition
Adel at the Hermanus Nutrition Clinic is very excited to be joining the team at Proactive Fitness at the beginning of December offering Nutritional Therapy consultations. What is Nutritional Therapy? Nutritional Therapy helps to support health, vitality and wellness naturally through diet, lifestyle and where necessary nutritional supplements. It recognises that we are all biochemically unique so it does not involve a ‘one size fits all’ approach. Consultations are a collaborative process, so that the we create programme is realistic and achievable. Common problems that can be addressed by nutritional therapy include weight loss, digestive issues, food intolerances, cravings, stress management, hormone imbalance, skin problems and low energy. All programmes are designed
to fit your lifestyle and bring about change in the body according to your specific health needs. a bit about Adel … Adel Pretorius BSc (Hons) is a fully trained Nutritional Therapist with a passion for health and nutrition as well as working with people. Adel trained in the UK at Middlesex University where she obtained a Bachelors of Science degree in Nutritional Therapy. As part of her training she also undertook NLP (Neurolinguistic programming) which she feels is an important tool to promote positive change. Adel is also a member of the South African Association for Nutritional Therapy. As a Nutritional Therapist she believes that diet and lifestyle are among the most profound factors that can influence our health. After all we are what we eat! She
feels our bodies need the right balance of nutrients to function. If our individual needs are not met this can be a factor in the development of health issues. Adel has a special interest in digestive issues and weight loss.
Adel is also able to offer laboratory testing where appropriate.
With her passion for health and wellbeing Adel also believes in integrated medicine and often draws on the expertise of other health professionals to serve her clients’ best, making Proactive Fitness the perfect wellness environment.
For any questions and future appointments please call Adel on 084 515 0208 or email her on adel@hermanusnutritionclinic. com visit her website at www. hermanusnutritionclinic.com
Consultations include a Bio Impedance Analysis (BIA) assessment that records detailed information of body composition to help plan an individualised programme. By sending low level electrical signals through your body that are safe and painless, the monitor calculates your body composition.

The Harold Porter
National Botanical Garden
I
n the mid 1930's, the land between Rooi Els and the Palmiet River was advertised for sale and was bought by three Johannesburg businessmen, namely Jack Clarence, Arthur Youldon and Harold Porter. They formed a company known as "The Hangklip Beach Estate” and divided portions of it into the small villages of Betty’s Bay, Pringle Bay and Rooi Els.
Harold Porter, an Architect and Town Planner, cherished a childhood dream of creating a nature garden, and was able to realise it here in Betty’s Bay, naming it Shangri-la Nature Reserve. He died in 1958 and the Reserve was bequeathed to the National Botanical Gardens who renamed it the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden (HPNBG) in his honour.
This Garden, the most southern National Botanical Garden on the African continent, consists of over 200ha stretching from the top of the Kogelberg mountain range down to the sea. The Garden contains a whole river system including two magnificent waterfalls tumbling down the cliffs. It is one of ten gardens belonging to the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), tasked with growing the regional indigenous flora in which they occur. The HPNBG grows many plants found in the Fynbos flora of the Western Cape, including Protea, Erica and Restio in the 10ha that have been cultivated. The rest of the area belonging to the Garden is managed as a natural veld reserve comprising coastal and mountain fynbos, winter

rainfall coastal dune vegetation and afromontane forest. Most of this natural section is included in the core zone of the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, while the developed section is part of the buffer area. Apart from the beautifully maintained garden and the trails through the natural areas, the facilities in the HPNBG include a restaurant, conference centre, plant sales and a shop which will be opened soon. It is a wonderful venue for weddings, conferences, special parties and sheer outdoor enjoyment. For more information on the Harold Porter National Botanical Garden, please go to our website www. sanbi.org to find out more about SANBI and the various gardens and research centres it controls.

STAR WARS The Force Awakens What we know so far...
I
n 2005 it looked like the Star Wars saga was officially over. Lucasfilm and Twentieth Century Fox released Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, which completed the prequels trilogy and tied the story back to the first film in the series. It was done, finished, kaput, and ended. But then along came Disney. In October 2012 the studio brokered a $4.05 billion deal to buy Lucasfilm, and with the deal came the announcement that they would be starting production on a whole new trilogy of Star Wars films that would keep the epic story going for years and years to come. Naturally, fanboys started to foam at the mouth with anticipation. What would the new movies be about? Would they bring back classic characters or merely focus on new ones? Would there be new stories set outside of the trilogy? But then along came Disney. In October 2012 the studio brokered a $4.05 billion deal to buy Lucasfilm, and with the deal came the announcement that they would be starting production on a whole new trilogy of Star Wars films that would keep the epic story going for years and years to come. Naturally, fanboys started to foam at the mouth with anticipation. What would the new movies be about? Would they bring back classic characters or merely focus on new ones? Would there be new stories set outside of the trilogy? Thanks to all of these questions, we have been sorting through all of the rumors trying to sort out exactly what we know about the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The Title We spent years solely referring to the new chapter in the Star Wars saga as simply Star Wars: Episode VII, but those days are over. History will now forever remember the new movie as Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This name has received a bit of flak from fans, as some are confused by the idea of The Force going to sleep, but it’s also not super hard to interpret the larger meaning, as the film is basically the reawakening of the franchise after a decade-long sleep.
The Production It lasted for almost a full six months, but production on Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been completed and the film now finds itself in post-production in advance of its December release date. Principal photography on the movie began on May 16, 2014, and ended in the first week of November in 2014. While some location shooting was done in places like the Abu Dhabi desert and the Irish island Skellig Michael, most of filming was done at Pinewood Studios in England (which was actually expanded to ensure that the movie had enough room to work). There were some complications encountered during shooting, with incidents involving leaked photos and plot details, but the biggest setback involved Harrison Ford sustaining an injury aboard the Millennium Falcon. Schedules had to be changed and production was put on hiatus for a spell, but the situation was resolved without the need to delay the film’s release date. The Timeline It has been confirmed that the Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens plot will be set 30 years after the Battle of Endor and the events portrayed in Return of the Jedi. This makes complete sense, given that the film will once again feature the likes of Luke, Leia and Han from George Lucas’ original trilogy. In order to pull this off realistically, Episode VII, would need to factor in the age of the actual actors, and it appears that’s exactly what’s being done. The Director Though he initially declined the job, J.J. Abrams is not only going to be the director of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but also one of the co-writers. The filmmaker has had plenty of experience working in science-fiction, directing both the last two Star Trek movies as well as the Spielberg-esque Super 8, and has long said that he is a lifelong Star Wars fan. Will that experience and fanhood lead to a great sequel? We’ll just have to wait and find out.
The Screenplay Oscar winning screenwriter Michael Arndt was one of the first people to be hired to work on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, signing a deal to pen the script for the film only about a week after the film was first announced in 2012. But his involvement ended months before the start of production, and the script was put the hands of J.J. Abrams and Empire Strikes Back screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan. While plot details have not yet been officially revealed, insiders have said that the film will have a young female protagonist and that the plot will be sparked by the discovery of Luke’s hand and a lightsaber. The Cast The cast of Star Wars: The Force Awakens features a large number of actors new to the legendary franchise, but the series’ original heroes will be definitely be back as well. Of course, while we know Mark Hamill will be back playing Luke Skywalker, it’s not exactly clear exactly what his role in the plot will be or how big it will be. While Carrie Fisher has been confirmed to return as Princess Leia Organa in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, practically nothing is known about what her role in the movie will be. Han Solo, everyone’s favorite space smuggler, played by Harrison Ford, will be back in full force. Don't miss Star Wars: The Force Awakens in SA cinemas this December. Wild Horses REMAIN FREE?
The moves afoot to shift the famous wild horses forcibly to another habitat, has been met with outrage by many of the residents in the Fisherhaven and Meerensee area, where they have been roaming around freely for almost a century.
I
t is rumoured that they are descendants from the Anglo-Boer war, and some even believe their predecessors have escaped from the Birkenhead ship wreck and swam ashore. Whatever the case may be, they are part of the heritage of this area, and their hooves have even adapted to accommodate the vlei conditions. These beautiful wild horses, most of them with a genetic white star on their foreheads, roam around freely between Rooisand, Middlevlei nature reserve and Fisherhaven. They have even been seen crossing the wooden bridge at Meerensee from Rooisand via the beach. There are no boundaries to keep them in one area when the lagoon is low after breaching, as the case is now. So to consider moving them to Rooisand by drugging them and moving them in a truck, seems like an astonishingly futile, traumatic and expensive exercise. The fire department has been called out to extinguish a huge veld fire at Rooisand over three days till last Sunday, and the horses will obviously search for greener pastures now. There are currently close to 30 wild horses left according to Bruce Boyd, a photographer who follow them around with a passion. They are moving around in separate groups at Fisherhaven, Rooisand, Middlevlei and Lamloch. There are currently two young foals and a pregnant mare. People are requested not to
bother, touch or feed the horses - they know how to care for themselves and flourish on the local vlei vegetation. Comments on the face book community pages “The Wild Ones” and “Rooisand Wild Horse Watch” reflect their response to the suggestion to move the horses forcibly: * Margie Wilson says: “ What a load of horse manure if you will pardon the pun. These animals are wild and free roaming and an asset to the area. And what’s more, if they poop on your plot, you have free manure. * Tracey Whitelaw Coombe: “Most Fisherhaveners appear to want them to stay too. I’ve heard of precisely one formal complaint about them messing people’s gardens. Rooisand Horse Watch has made proposals about managing them. There is an active Horse Watch which activates when horses go too high in the village, or are harassed or endangered. We have suggested grids, improved fencing along the R43 and educating the few well-meaning people who encourage them by feeding and watering them. I’m so sorry that the newspaper article reflected badly on Fisherhaveners when it is actually ALL about the safety and issues of liability with regards to any accident caused by the horses on the R43. * Heather Cowell: The Rooisand Horse Watch page has over 330 likes and the posts are viewed by over 900. We have been active since July 2014 and recently formalised ourselves at our first public meeting.
* Rosemary Audie-Jonker: Authorities should use funds where it should be used and not waste it on moving wild horses who have for centuries looked after themselves. Leave wild life alone! A 2016 Calendar of these Wild Horses, photographed by Bruce Boyd, is currently being printed. “I am trying to create awareness by using the only tool I have - a camera,” says Boyd. “These horses are migratory by nature and it is senseless to try and restrict them or move them around. They are wild in essence” His passion for the horses is evident in the stunning photographs on his website The Wild Ones. Visitors to his website assisted in the selection of photos for the 2016 Calendar which are available via his facebook page: www. facebook.com/thewildones.co.za at R150 per copy, or copies will be left at Meerensee - contact altacapetown@gmail.com . People who are interested in following the plight of the wild horses are encouraged to like the Facebook pages of The Wild Ones and Rooi Sand Horse Watch. “These famous wild horses have become a major tourist attraction and many people spend their December holidays here in the hope of encountering the wild horses,” says one of the residents at Meerensee, Alta Pretorius. “ They stir people’s hearts and souls, since they symbolise the freedom which all humans desire - to be free and independent, unrestricted and happy... Please leave them be.”

Human Interference in
NATURE
T
he Overstrand is privileged to have several Estuaries where rivers breach into the sea from time to time. This has been an ongoing occurrence. During the past couple of years not all the local Estuaries breached naturally, and in some cases decisions were taken to intervene and open up the sand strip between the lagoon and sea artificially. In September this year the Kleinmond river opened naturally into the sea, as well as in the Hermanus Grotto beach area. However, the Bot River Estuary which has been closed for a mere four months, was opened artificially with municipal bulldozers on 1 October 2015, causing a rapid draining of approximately half of the lagoon into the ocean. The wooden bridge is now standing stone dry in a sandy desert, and the lake area to the left of the bridge called Kleinsee, has completely disappeared due to these actions over the years. A few bewildered flamingos and other water birds are now huddling together on the Fisherhaven side of the lagoon, and a few flamingos died – the possible cause is still being investigated. Several newspaper articles and Facebook groups commented heatedly on the artificial breaching. One of the home owners at Middlevlei, Prof. Johan Coetzee, doubted the fish nursery idea: “It is common fallacy that fish breed in the lagoon. THEY DO NOT! Any marine biologist will inform you that they breed in the sea. A possible exception is mullet. When the mouth closes, the trapped fish (e.g. steenbras, kob, elf, garrick) thrive and grow big, due to the abundance of food.” A discussion document was prepared by Anton Boon, chairperson of the Middlevlei Home Owners Association, to discuss with provincial authorities. He tried via the relevant Minister to make an appointment to meet with the Director: Biodiversity and Coastal Management Western Cape on 19th November, but was told to follow different procedures and go back to the relevant discussion forums. Some of these items contained in the document were consequently discussed at a Bot River Estuary Forum meeting on 19th November. It highlighted various aspects regarding the inadequate notification of the intention to breach to relevant forums and affected parties, the post breaching report, and the current status of the Bot River Lagoon. The Bot River ends in a lagoon and wetlands in the Western Cape between Meerensee and Kleinmond. The lagoon used to breach naturally during the rainy seasons when flooding occurs. A few years ago there was a drive to change the lagoon into a fish nursery. This resulted in the lagoon needing to be managed and artificially breached, in consultation with the Bot River Estuary Forum (BREF) and “Bot Friends”. A management plan was compiled which set out the breaching criteria. According to Boon the communication by the breaching committee is selectively shared, and not meeting

GOOD OR BAD? The consequences of human intervention on the Overstrand’s lagoon water levels, fish and bird life, wild horses and frogs.
expectations. The consequences of the premature artificial breaching according to the discussion document: • The lake area on the left side of the wooden bridge has been sanded up and is lost – it used to be a breeding area for water birds, and a special bird hide was built which is now not functioning any more. • The dunes that are washed into the sea during artificial breaching, are brought back by the waves and dropped in the lagoon mouth. This area could also in the near future be covered with vegetation and be lost as a lagoon. • After artificial breaching, the ground water level drops and fynbos and Milkwood trees are affected negatively. • The fish population is dropping if you monitor the number of fish caught in the lagoon nowadays. Even in the shallow water, the schools of small fish are not seen any more. The theory that the lagoon is used by fish as a nursery is not supported by all. Verified fish counts over these years, could resolve some of the myths. • The sand prawns are also a concern. The fishermen are increasingly moving upstream to find them, proving that something has changed over the last few years. • Many water birds have left and are not using this estuary as breeding ground any more. The thousands of terns who used to migrate here every year are no longer seen. • The famous wild horses which have been around for almost a century have been trapped on the Fisherhaven side of the lagoon due to the regular artificial breaching. They got used to uninformed people feeding them are now regarded by some as a nuisance. Moves are afoot to drug them, put them in a truck, and move them forcibly to the Rooisand area on the other side of the lagoon. This seems like a ridiculous exercise, since the low water levels have ensured that there are no borders to prevent the horses from simply moving back to greener pastures – especially after the huge fire on the Rooisand area during November. • The lagoon is a tourist attraction for sightseeing, water sport, fishing etc. Many developments were established because of the lagoon and the view, but these developments will not survive if the lagoon is sanded up. We must acknowledge that tourism is a valued benefit for the area. A response to the Botrivier Estuary mouth breaching was received from the authorities after the BREF meeting. Marlene Laros, Director: Biodiversity and Coastal Management (from the Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Western Cape Government) responded as follows a few days after the meeting: “The Mouth Management Plan sets out parameters which need to be met in order to breach the estuary.
The following conditions were prevalent at the time of the request to breach, a water level of 2.46m amsl and salinity of 10.48ppt. These conditions were very close to the required parameters, namely: • Water level > 2,5m msl and salinity =< 10 ppt . This slight deviation was approved by the Department. However, the Department believes that it is imperative that the concerns of the Meerensee community are addressed in the review of the MMP. Furthermore the allegations that the breaching is causing a decrease in the fish population, causing sand shrimp and birds to be negatively affected must be investigated. Any evidence should be brought to the attention of the breaching committee, so that these impacts may be avoided or appropriate mitigation measures can be implemented in future. The Department is grateful to members of the community who play a significant role in monitoring and reporting concerns related to the health of our estuaries. “ Newspaper headings reflected the concern from affected parties: • Unhappiness over estuary breaching • Breaching of lagoon is a disaster • Mag ons die natuur so verwoes? • Red ons meer van Meerensee • Let’s all seek solutions to the lagoon conditions • Wild horses of Fisherhaven – moves afoot to shift herd • Lament for water birds • Another word about the Lagoon • The wild horses have been roaming freely for almost a century. Good intervention: The Citizen’s Science Project of Whale Coast Conservation Forum is one example of positive human intervention, especially the “Save the Frogs” project at Stanford. The project leader Sheraine van Wyk, presented a summary of the project on 17th November at the Green House. Volunteers and boarding school children have been assisting in this project to save the endangered Leopard Frog. During a period of eight days, 539 live toadlets were moved safely off the road. The Willem Appel Dam where these toads breed is surrounded by roads and private properties which do not always allow for safe passage and pasture. When the baby toadlets hatch during October, they emerge from the dam and move towards more suitable foraging grounds, moving into harm’s way. During this period more than 1000 dead toadlets were found. People who want to become involved in any of WCC Citizen Science projects can contact sheraine.wcc@gmail.com. The anti-plastic campaign is also close to her heart.

123-TATTOO-FREE TATTOO REMOVAL SYSTEM
Contact Ria Jordaan 082 9256957
123-TATTOO-FREE® Removes the Tattoo in 1-3 sessions, utilizing a mild exfoliating formula combined with our unique but virtually painless pinpoint abrasion process. There is NO other method that actually removes the ink from the skin other than 123-TATTOO-FREE®. 123-TATTOO-FREE® simply creates a mild irritation that causes the body to naturally reject the pigment. In fact again unlike other chemical removals where the unsightly chemical is left on the skin, 123-TATTOO-FREE® is not left on the skin but is washed off the clients skin thoroughly before he/she leaves your studio.

HOLD MY HAND,
I’M AGING:
No longer can it be said that you can tell a woman’s age by her hands; medical science has provided the answers to combat the worst foe to our skin… the sun. We all forget to take care of our hands; exposing them to excessive washing with detergents; toiling away in the garden and in the full sun. How many of us protect and tend to our hands the way we do our face? During the aging process there are many reasons that our hands (and faces) give away our age. As most people know, sun exposure is most likely one of the most poisonous forms of light we can expose our skin to. There are 3 main UV (ultraviolet) rays: UV A, B and C. The differentiation of these rays, is by their wave length and hence the penetration of depth into the skin layers. UVA (wavelength 320-400nm); penetrates deepest into the skin and causes damage at the dermal layer. Dermal meaning deeper skin layer. UVA, is linked to skin aging, wrinkling, and initiation and exacerbation of skin cancer. UVA can penetrate glass and clouds and hence puts our skin at risk, even when we are indoors or driving. 95% of UV radiation is generated from UVA rays. Anecdotally, I’ve noticed that if a woman suffers from pigmentation on her cheeks, due to hormones or other factors; the cheek pigmentation is often darker on the side of the car that she sits on. Sun exposure through windows of the car causes or exacerbates pigmentary changes in the skin.

So this all sounds very depressing, “irreversible” and up until recently, pretty much was the case. However, medical science has graciously provided us with ways of reversing and rejuvenating the skin giving us back a youthful skin. Skin fillers replace the skin thickness and elasticity. This is a simple procedure involving injecting small amounts of filler into the hands. About three injection sites, with local anaesthetic, making the procedure close to painless. Dry ice can then be used to the rid the skin of sun spots, at a different sitting; and lastly, chemical peels, stimulate the skin to produce its own stronger, healthy refreshed cells; to give a smoother texture, less blotchy pigment and reduction of skin wrinkles….Chemical peels have recently taken the Skincare market by storm and have proven to be a very safe effective way of rejuvenating the skin and decreasing small wrinkles and pigmentation. The only way however, to PREVENT damage to our skins, is to STAY OUT OF THE SUN and wear sunblock which is reapplied repeatedly during the day. And remember to protect your skin even when driving or sitting near a window. Your choice of Sunblock should include an antiinflammatory and anti-oxidant to not only prevent sun damage but to protect against pigmentation and destruction of collagen and hyaluronic gel. Refine would like to take this opportunity to wish all our loyal clients all the best over the Festive Season. Travel safe if you are on the road and come visit if you are in town. Refine will be open throughout the Festive Season, please avoid the rush and book early as appointments are filling up. For our visitors to Hermanus, welcome and please feel free to consult with us for all your Anti-aging treatments and advice. We are situated at the entrance to the Hemel and Aarde Valley at the Wine Village.
UVB is a shorter wavelength (280-320 nanometres), does not penetrate glass and clouds; but is still a potent ray which is also linked to malignant and benign skin tumours such as malignant melanoma. It causes damage to the more superficial layers of the skin, the epidermis, and superficial layers of the dermis. UVC is the shortest high energy light wave generated by the sun. It is filtered by the ozone layer and usually does not reach the earth’s surface. This is obviously where the ozone layer is still intact. To observe photo damage (damage due to sun rays;) we can simply compare the areas of our skin exposed to the sun (the face, hands, forearms and décolleté-neck and upper chest); as opposed to non-sun exposed areas which undergo the normal physiological aging process. Photo-damaged skin is leathery in texture, more wrinkled and has a lower recoil capacity (elasticity). It is also more fragile, blisters easily and shows impaired wound healing. These signs are due to changes in the deeper skin layers (dermis). Superficial changes are manifested by increased skin pigmentation (darker areas) and lentigines (also known as “sun spots” or “liver spots”). Younger skin has lots of protein, forming scaffolding under the skin surface. The scaffolding is made of collagen (large proteins); elastin (smaller elastic proteins) and hyaluronic acid (a gelatinous substance holding these proteins together). Hyaluronic acid is what is used in skin fillers, replacing your body’s own natural skin thickness and “bounce”.

The Mock Turtle story
J
une this year, after almost a decade, Hermanus said a sad farewell to Shimmi’s, a legendary party spot that was frequented by many party lovers.
July welcomed in a new era of entertainment with the launch of Mock Turtle by TomCat Creations. A shiny new addition to the creatively weird and wonderful that is Hermanus, Mock Turtle, with its quirky retro decor and fantasy atmosphere has already become a favourite attraction. Located in the Village Square Clock Tower, Mock Turtle has the most amazing views of the Old Harbour and Hermanus – a perfect location for whale watching and enjoying sundowners whilst gazing out over the big blue that is Walker Bay. During the day you will find our hospitality management couple, Hennig & Anneline, running the restaurant, premium bar & cocktail lounge. Collaborating with our neighbours, guests can now enjoy all their Lemon Butta favourites at Mock Turtle. From juicy beef burgers and mouth-watering steaks to expertly made sushi and almost everything else under the sea. For red meat lovers looking for a healthier option we would recommend the Tuna Steak - who knew that tuna can be prepared to taste exactly like a perfectly cooked; big fat steak straight off the braai! Don’t forget to add a side of potato wedges – they are the best you could have this side of the mountain. With our large selection of wines, you can also pair the perfect wine to accompany any meal.
At night the venue transforms into a state of the art night club where old and young can dance the night away to funky vibes provided by our in-house DJ and night club manager, Francois Swart (aka DJ Ladyfinger). We stock a large variety of drinks – anything from Steri Stumpies and craft beer to Cognac and Champagne. Our bar is expertly managed by a team of chefs and professional cocktail barmen who guarantee to have your taste buds singing and your feet shuffling to the beat in no time. Promotions and loads of freebies are offered on a regular basis. With our experienced security, medical and fire team on hand, Mock Turtle is also a safe environment to have some serious fun. Should you wish to be chauffeured, the taxi service to and from Mock Turtle is just a phone call away. Other services that we offer include special events with performances from a variety of South African artists, catered functions and private parties. The VIP section can be booked separately and is quite popular for bachelor/ bachelorette parties. So take the winding stairs up the clock tower next time you want to go down the rabbit hole – Mock Turtle is waiting for you to come and join the dance. ...and if you are still wondering what a mock turtle is... as the queen said to Alice:
“It’s the thing the soup is made from”.

The bucket bag is an absolute essential for any girl who spends her days on the go. it has a universally appealing shape. it’s structured, but not too structured- fashionable, but not too out-there. if you get a bucket bag with fringes, you tackle two main trends.

Kersfees fees E
Mynhardt se oorvloedige kerskoek net so bedien.
Mynhard t
Met liefde Wie anders as my nuwe vriend Mynhardt Joubert?
