Hermanus Bowls turns

Jaar van Rolbal in Hermanus

I

n 1924 bowls arrived on the Hermanus sports scene, on a green laid down at the stylish Riviera Hotel. There was also a green at the Onrust Hotel. The Hermanus bowlers played at either of these venues. In 1936 the formation of the Hermanus Bowling club was initiated. A steering committee was formed at a public meeting held in December 1936 which was chaired by RJ Love with J Longwill as the secretary. The Hermanus Municipality granted a site for a green in 1937. This is borne out by the fact that the initiating committee took it upon themselves to construct the green with a small labour squad. A soil leveler was devised and a retired surveyor completed the levelling. Even the clubhouse design was done in-house. The clubhouse was completed in time for the 1938 season.

Let it be said that the contribution by the ladies in the past and at present contributed towards the club being run successfully, especially in respect of fundraising and catering. Increased membership led to the development of a second green in 1943. A third green was established in 1973. The clubhouse was expanded in 1961, followed by extensions in 1970 and again in 1977. Since then the clubhouse has been regularly upgraded. The high standard of the present facilities are due to contributions received such as loans by the Municipality, fundraising and in the latter years, allocations by S.A. Lottery.

reeds oor baie dekades spelers wat Boland by interprovinsiale toernooie verteenwoordig. The club with a present membership of 180 is by far the biggest club in the Boland and second to Durbanville in the Western Cape. Boland Bowls make regular use of the greens for their championships. The availability of three greens can accommodate 144 players. Bowls South Africa has used the club venue twice over the past 10 years for the S.A. Mixed Pairs Final, the last time being in 2014. The club was lauded by Bowls South Africa for the excellence of the greens and its hospitality. The club stands in the forefront of the new recognised bowls development programme for scholars, supported by Government. The Business League is most probably the sporting event which is the most representative of the Hermanus Community at large. Some of the teams have participated for fourteen consecutive years. Enthusiasm, irrespective of the sometimes lack of skill, is at a high pitch. The teams are fitted out in their personalised attire and create a rainbow of colours. As many as 42 teams have taken part and sometimes some of the teams produce future champions. Boland annually present a Business League Final and more than often Hermanus teams have been on top!

The club is an integral part of the Hermanus community. Organisations such as the SARP ad Senior Centre use the club facilities for functions and get-togethers’, whilst private persons make use of it for 21st birthdays and anniversaries. The cherry on the top is the Ayala tournament having been played for the 88th time this year. The first 8 years it was played at the Riviera Hotel sponsored by Ayala champagne, origin Paris, France, hence the name. This tournament is held in high esteem and top players from Western Province, Southern Cape and Boland participate for the coveted title. The team of Neil Birkett, former Protea Captain, has won the titles. After eight decades the game described as: “a game played on a green with heavy spherical balls with a bias, being rolled towards a jack.” Is most certainly strongly on the roll and the future holds well for the club.

a few of my favourite things ... I am such a girl. A friend recently pointed out that I get genuinely upset when confronted by UGLY. Jip. It actually offends me. Ugly Stuff, not people. But on the other hand, Quirky interests me. Stuff and People, in this case. The unusual attracts me. Mediocrity bores the crap out of me. (Yes, I actually wrote ‘crap’, (that’s twice, oops :-) Clearly, I am a naughty girl. A naughty girl who likes pretty, quirky and unusual. I completely understand how people can become shopoholics – I mean I loved Amulet so much I sommer bought the shop and now I have the best job in the world – finding pretty quirky wonderful stuff… I get to travel to unusual places with the most valid excuse in the world – I’m working! When I find something fabulous for my shop I can actually feel my spirit lift – the adrenalin kicks in. A natural high without the morningafter hangover. There is one down-side though; Sometimes I find it hard to let go – I have to fight the urge to keep my precious find all to myself. I just can’t resist gorgeous. I even named our Rottweiler ‘Mr Gorgeous’. And trust me, he is. Many years ago I Percy and I would trek down to the Cape (from Johannesurg) for the December holidays and at the time one of my favourite outings was a trip to the Lemm’s corner market in Hermanus. We would literally come with an empty car and load it to the roof. Coming from the City of Gold we were always amazed at the creativity of the artists, crafters and vendors this side of the Vaal. Nothing like it was available in Jozi. Percy still wears a pair of leather sandals he bought at one of the stalls and if Mr Gorgeous didn’t have a taste for cute sandals (no he didn’t wear it, he ate it!) I’d still be wearing mine. Little did I realise that one day I would have the privilege to

be involved in the revival of this bustling market. And the best part of all – it will run on Sundays – the day when visitors complain that all the best shops in the CBD are closed. If all goes according to plan, the market will be up and running by the time you read this. Please come and say hallo and support this fabulous initiative to celebrate the charming Hermanus of yesteryear. Christmas is upon us and a few diligent customers have their shopping and gifts done and dusted… And to you all; well done. To the rest of us (including Ms Shopoholic Truter and 98% of the shopping public) happy hunting for that perfect gift for that difficult boss, mother-in-law, son’s girlfriend… And most importantly; good luck to the husbands finding that special gift for your wife. If you are one of the many men who have been oblivious of your wife’s hints as to what she would love for Christmas this year, do not fret, there is a way to keep Mommy/Lovey/Mother of your children/Scary, unpredictable but incredibly sexy woman, happy this year. First of all I suggest Mommy, Lovey, Babe, etc…. come to Amulet and compile a Wish list (including several items; of varying price ranges) which we will store on her behalf. Hubby, boyfriend, daughter in law, grandchildren, secret lover (?!) can discreetly come check out the list and choose a wanted gift at a price that suits your pocket. Trust me – scary, unpredictable woman will become mushy lovable woman of your dreams – at least until you do something to upset her again. That one’s on you pal, no help from me there.

SPLASH 6

Case in point: My husband spoilt me with a ridiculously expensive laptop this year. We have been arguing about the amount of money he blew on a boring piece of technology which merely frustrates me endlessly because it won’t do what I want it to. Trust me I will be drawing up my own Amulet Christmas Wish List for Percy this year. No, I’m not ungrateful, I’m merely practical. You can buy me something much cheaper, something which I LOVE, thereby saving you money so that you can afford to buy youself that flat-screen TV on my behalf. I should be the minister of Finance in our house. Oh yes, hang on, I am. Just because I am ‘such a girl’ who loves pretty, does not make me an air-head without the foggiest idea about finances. Which explains while Amulet is still around in spite of all the prophets of doom. (Bet you they relish ugly.) And if you are really worried that you won’t be getting what you want this year, simply buy it for yourself, girl. You deserve it. Page on to the Refine article and see how I shamelessly treated myself for Christmas. Once you get past the shock of my ‘before’ picture. (EEEk!) And to further inspire you I’m choosing pictures of a few of my favourite things: Leather shoes with a quirky twist, yes those printed handbags are actually made from genuine leather. (No woman can ever have enough shoes or handbags – first of all ‘cause you don’t need to lose weight). 100% Linen cushions, filled with down. Blissful and beautiful… Come choose your favourite thing… Put on it on your wishlist… And who knows Santa may just surprise you this year… Here’s hoping you have a very pretty very merry holiday season this year.

The Festive Season is upon us and as it gets closer Christmas Carols will be the flavour of the day and so they should be, as they say Christmas comes but once a year. In the midst of all the festivities and the shopping, let us be mindful that Christmas is best celebrated from the heart and not the wallet. So dust off those Bony M Cd’s and celebrate to your HEARTS content. I wish everyone, families and friends a Blessed Christmas and Hanukkah.

Spirit. This Album by Amos Lee was released in August 2016. His sixth full length album and is self produced. This American singer/ songwriter’s style encompasses folk, rock and soul. His introspective honesty and his soulful sound has set his work apart for years and he just seems to be getting better. On this album Amos Lee shows his ability to explore new territory without abandoning his distinctive laidback style. The best musicians know when not to play and none of the added touches violate that rule. This is an artist who will never be mistaken for anyone else.

Gabriel by Bear’s Den. Bear’s Den are a British folk/alternative Rock Band formed in 2012. This track is off their second album Red Earth and Pouring Rain which was released in July 2016. According to the artists Gabriel is a name for the people who know you better than you know yourself. Its a beautiful tune lyrically and melodically with banjo chords, harmonies and a general sense of warmth. Every piece of this album is emotive and gripping, relatable and significant to every day life. From the song “Dew on the Vine” to the more Click brooding “Roses On A Breeze” on each artist to listen

Nobody But Me by Michael Bublé . This album was released

Blue and Lonesome. The Rolling stones will be releasing Blue and

Make It Rain by Ed Sheeran. This gritty emotional song was

Lonesome in December 2016, their first studio recorded album in over a decade. The 12 tracks which were recorded in three days are all cover songs by classic bluesmen and Eric Clapton guests on two of the tracks. This album sees The Stones returning to their roots, reimagining the classic blues standards that first inspired the band five decades ago. According to co-producer Don Was “This album is testament to the purity of their love for making music, and the blues is, for the Stones, the fountainhead of everything they do”.

October 2016 and is the first album Michael has produced himself. With 30 million records sold Michael clearly knows what he is about. The arrangements are slick and the jazz/pop formula makes his music timeless. It features three original songs co-written by Michael Buble’ and nine covers, and delivered with his usual nonchalant charisma. Michael Buble’s three year old son Noah has recently been diagnosed with cancer and the singer has announced that he will be taking a break in order to be with his son.

released as a single in 2014, and was recorded for the TV Series Sons Of Anarchy. When Ed Sheeran tweeted that he was a fan of the TV series and the music, the creator of the show proposed that Ed record a song for the show. Ed Sheeran thought Make It Rain would be appropriate so he spoke to Foy Vance, the writer of the song and a good friend, to ask if he could cover it. This bluesy song speaks of refreshing and change. When things have gone wrong we need to know that there is hope, that things can get better. “Lord Make It Rain”

Solo Exhibition by Solly Smook " Innate" 10 December 2016 - 10 January 2017

Riebeek Kasteel – based artist Solly Smook comes to Hermanus for his second solo exhibition of 2016, entitled “ INNATE” This exhibition will be hosted by Walker Bay Modern Art at 167 Main Road, Hermanus, South Africa from Saturday 10 December running until Monday 9 January 2017. As Innate, the title of the exhibition, suggests, Smook’s unfolding trajectory for this show has been the portrayal of factors existing in , belonging to , or determined by an individual from birth. Asking the viewer to reconsider the uncharted world of the innate. For him, portraiture has been about external and internal likeness ; an outer reflection of the heart. Each portrait aims for a substantial becoming of emotion, where feelings are guided away from seperateness. These aren’t portraits in the straightforward sense ; each is riddled with movements of the palette knife, bold brush strokes and contemporary use of colour to portray and articulate a journey of exploration and discovery into the innate. This series of work was inspired by a quote from John O’Donohue “One of the deepest longings of the human soul is to be seen.”

Meet Helene…. Ek onthou hoe ek gevra het… hoekom lyk jy vir my so bekend…. “Ag my skat, seker omdat ek op die TV (teevee) is…” het sy geantwoord! Jinne, daar slaan dit my tussen die oe, dis mos antie Poppie wat hier voor my sit!

Every time Helene came back from a Jhb trip, she would laugh and say: The people say that the Hermanus air does me well…. but now we know her secret is out to share! Thank you Helene for sharing your photo’s with us. We are looking forward to the next 7 years…! -Lindi Prinsloo

ON THE 3RD OF DEC. REFINE TURNS 7… WE THANK OUR LOYAL CUSTOMERS FOR THEIR SUPPORT THROUGHOUT THE YEARS, AND TRUST THAT WE WILL CONTINUE TO SERVE YOU IN THE FUTURE. With our first consultation, Helene considered facial rejuvenation treatments, and was adamant to not opt for surgery, she was concerned that the results might look unnatural. Being an actress, she still needed to have her natural facial expression. We started her skin care journey and decided on a range of combination therapies. She trusted me completely and was up for any treatment that was recommended. Just as there is no single way in which a person ages, there is no single procedure that can correct everything at once. We like to combine a number of different treatments to achieve facial rejuvenation. When used together, these treatments can help restore a naturally refreshed and vibrant appearance. I favour combination facial procedures for my patients, not because I believe more is better, but because better is better. In my experience, strategically pairing treatments to address facial aging on multiple levels creates the most natural, lasting results possible. At first Helene, was concerned with years of sun damage that was corrected with an IPL laser and light chemical peels. Her texture and colour changed dramatically. Later, we started with collagen induction therapies to restore some lost volume over time in an attempt to give her a tighter, smoother appearance. We used a Fractionated Laser for skin resurfacing and Skin Needling (Dermapen) in the fight against the sag. We would always combine a heat treatment such as Tripollar or Carboxytherapy to any facial or chemical peel to achieve a more result driven outcome.

This holiday season, be blessed, travel safely, be merry and don’t forget your sunscreen!

I called in the help of Dr. Michelle Emett in the quest of tightening Helene’s jawline and neck. She performed a silhouette treatment (one stitch lift), and recommended to have a bit of cheek filler placed just under the cheek bone, to restore lost volume. With the lifting of the jawline, there was a significant change in the folds next to Helene’s mouth. Helene was over the moon with the results. Her skin is brighter, tighter, healthy and glowy. And she still looks natural, ready for her next production!

123-TATTOO-FREE® Removes the Tattoo in 1-3 sessions, utilizing a mild exfoliating formula combined with our unique but virtually painless pinpoint abrasion process. There is NO other method that actually removes the ink from the skin other than 123-TATTOO-FREE®. 123-TATTOO-FREE® simply creates a mild irritation that causes the body to naturally reject the pigment. In fact again unlike other chemical removals where the unsightly chemical is left on the skin, 123-TATTOO-FREE® is not left on the skin but is washed off the clients skin thoroughly before he/she leaves your studio.

We are all so proud of this Hermanus girl! 1st year competing. Already having an impressive run with two wins under her belt! NABBA SA champs will be graced by her awesome stage presence and shining personality never mind her incredible physique! This is her story: From a very young age I have always been a natural at any sports, even competing with the boys when I was young. I have always been an active person and loved the feeling that exercise has given me. I know it’s cliché, but whenever I am involved in doing any sport, be it doing a gymnastics routine as I flipped across the floor, to dancing in one of Britons best young hip hop dance studios and representing the country, to winning the 100m and 200m whilst in school, sport has always been the reason why I get up in the mornings. Since finishing high school with having to study and work to get a little bit of extra pocket money I have found it hard to have time and energy to get back into my active self. But, I can certainly say that this year I have found that extra push where I have now connected with a new community of athletes and a completely new dedication and lifestyle that has really enthused me. I am now 24 years old and have found my new passion in life, competing in Body Building competitions. l I started training about 3 months ago for my first competition in August. It went very well and I came 5th, but this was only because I was a bit too muscular for my division which was the Beach Bikini division. l I then continued to train harder and competed in the Overberg Body Building Championships where I placed 1st in the Fitness Bikini division, 2nd in the Bikini beach division and 3rd in the evening wear division. l I have continued training and competed at Western Province NABBA/WBFF where I placed 1st again in my division of Beach bikini and have been given the opportunity to represent the Western Province at SA’s Nationals in Pretoria. This sport takes a lot of time and dedication, where my typical day consists of: waking up at 5 in the morning to go and do cardiovascular training for an hour then come home and shower, then do my meal preparations for the day (I only eat oats in the morning and hake and broccoli every two hours after that, which is the hardest part of the whole competition preparation process), I then attend classes at university and study for tests and do assignments during the day, then at about 2-3 in the afternoon I go back to the gym where I do weight training for another 1.5 hours, I then come home and continue with studying for university. It may seem like a very draining process but at the end of the day when they call your name out to say that you have won it makes all the hard work and time a 100% worth it. A huge thank you to all my sponsors for SA’s Nationals....I could not have done it without each and every one of you!

How sHould your estate agent comply in order to operate as a fully compliant agency/agent wHo is entitled to earn commission? In the previous edition of SPLASH we discussed the knowledge that your estate agent should possess and in the prior edition, the characteristics of a good and professional agent. Today our topic revolves around the current position in South Africa regarding compliance in real estate agencies. In terms of a notice in the Government Gazette 31225 of 4 June 2008 all estate agents* and estate agency principals** must, as from 15 July 2008 be in possession of the following registered qualifications: FET Certificate: Real Estate (estate agents) or the National Certificate: Real Estate (for principals of estate agencies).

During this time no agent or principal may operate without either an Intern Fidelity Fund Certificate (FFC), a Full Status FFC or a Principal FFC. The FFC is the ‘licence to practice’ which is issued by the statutory body, the EAAB. The estate agency firm must also at all times be in possession of a valid FFC. So dear reader, before entrusting the purchase or sale or lease or rental or management of your property to a real estate agency or agent, please ensure that they comply and that you are not dealing with an illegal firm or agent.

*An estate agent is someone or an agency who undertakes the marketing of real estate for sale or for rental on behalf of a client or the management of immovable property on behalf of a client

Should you require more information on the topic of compliance, kindly email the REDZetc principal, Pam Snyman at pams@redzproperties.co.za or if you would like copies of any of the three topics discussed in this column so far, kindly call Bernadette at the REDZetc head office on 021 881 3311 or email info@redzproperties.co.za and we will gladly oblige.

A **principal estate agent is any director of an estate agency company, member of a CC, a partner in Partnership, or the Sole Proprietor of an estate agency.

PS : Agents who are not in possession of a valid (renewed each year) FFC are legally not entitled to earn commission.

2 years after qualifying, an estate agent must pass the Professional Designation Examination (PDE) set by the Estate Agency Affairs Board in order to be able to use the designation PPRE (Professional Practitioner Real Estate) The same applies for a principal estate agent who must pass the principals PDE in order to be afforded the status as MPRE (Master Practitioner Real Estate) In terms of the Education Regulations, all persons seeking to enter the estate agency profession are required, as from 15 July 2008, first to serve as intern estate agents, acting under the supervision of a principal estate agent, for a continuous period of twelve months. This requirement applies to all new entrants, or intern estate agents, regardless of any academic, professional or other qualifications which they may hold. Once the ‘intern estate agent’ has received his/her FETC: Real Estate, concluded the prescribed practical experiential learning and recorded it in a logbook and written and passed the PDE, the agent can apply to the EAAB for an upgrade to a full status agent.

DRINK DRIVING vs. DRUNK DRIVING

IS IT AN ACCIDENT OR CHOICE

D

rink driving implies the driving of a motor vehicle with alcohol in your anatomical system as opposed to drunk driving where you are clearly impaired, even if only slightly as a result of such alcohol consumption and this impacts on your driving ability. Unfortunately the dividing line between the two is very thin. The other no go area in terms of the law is then, if not drunk or impaired, but having drank the mere existence of a blood or breath alcohol content level being over the prescribed limit, can result in a conviction too. By being a drink or drunk driver you could pay an extreme price by way of one or more of the following: l Living with your conscience, even worse so if someone were to be killed or injured l A costly court case and legal fees l No insurance pay-outs for vehicle or other damage l Community service l House arrest l Suspension of driving licence l A permanent criminal record making foreign travel or immigrating impossible or difficult l A maximum fine of R12 000 l Jail time of up to 6 years Are you willing to take the risk, by saying “it won’t happen to me”…………..famous last words in many respects. Simply ask someone who has been caught. The Western Cape has the highest ratio per 100 000 of the population of all the provinces for this offence. This is not necessarily an indication of being worse drinkers than the rest of the country, but rather that the enforcement authorities work harder and smarter. Be assured you will be caught if you transgress.

(1) No person shall on a public road – (a) drive a vehicle; or (b) occupy the driver’s seat of a motor vehicle the engine of which is running, while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or a drug having a narcotic effect. (2) No person shall on a public road – (a) drive a vehicle; or (b) occupy the driver’s seat of a motor vehicle the engine of which is running, while the concentration of alcohol in any specimen of blood taken from any part of his or her body is not less than 0,05 grams per 100 millilitres, or in the case of a professional driver referred to in section 32, not less than 0,02 grams per 100 millilitres. (5) No person shall on a public road – (a) drive a vehicle; or (b) occupy the driver’s seat of a motor vehicle the engine of which is running, while the concentration of alcohol in any specimen of breath exhaled by such person is not less than 0,24 milligrams per 1 000 millilitres, or in the case of a professional driver referred to in section 32, not less than 0,10 milligrams per 1 000 millilitres.

Based on interaction with persons arrested for one of the above offences it is evident that a deficient understanding of what the law actually says exists, this with specific reference to the indication of alcohol content in comparison to blood or breath ratios. That then, coupled to the actual amount of alcohol in each specific circumstance that would result in an individual reaching a certain level of either breath or blood alcohol content. Be warned though, the culture of and manner of drinking in South Africa results in reaching the limit much faster than what you anticipate. The what in terms of alcohol strength, the how much in terms of units of alcohol, the time in which or tempo at which consumed, as well as critical factors such as, age, gender, body size, height and weight, stomach content, body fat percentage and ability to metabolise alcohol of each individual will all impact on the reaching of such limit and the time taken to sober up.

But, what does the law say in this instance? Section 65 of the National Road Traffic Act, 1996 (Act 93of 1996) is very clear and explicit in this regard: 65. Driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drug having narcotic effect, or with excessive amount of alcohol in blood or breath

SPLASH 20

If in doubt, and if you do drink,

then never drive it is a choice not an accident Far too many innocent road users die or are injured as a result of such choices. Make the right one this holiday season. Don’t drink drive. David V Frost Deputy Director: Road Safety Management

vreugde

“Joy as the Archbishop said, is much bigger than happiness. While happiness is often seen as being dependent on external circumstances, joy is not. This state of mind and heart – is much closer to understanding of what animates our lives and what ultimately leads to a life of satisfaction and meaning. The dialogues were about what the Dalai Lama has called the very ‘purpose of Life”

D

Whale coast conservation’s adventures in nature At Whale Coast Conservation we are inspired by the words of famous environmental writer George Monbiot: “If children lose contact with nature they won’t fight for it”. For this reason we take young and old to experience nature at first hand through our regular adventures in nature. SAVING THE TOADLETS

On a rainy day in November seventeen adults and seven children rallied to the rescue to help baby Western Leopard Toads to make their way in the big wide world. Sheraine van Wyk introduced the group to her research on the issues surrounding their breeding place in the Willem Appel Dam in Stanford. She described the problems of pollution and nutrient enrichment, as well as the steps being taken by the municipality and various other role players to remedy these and to secure the frogs’ future. Everyone was amazed at how small and vulnerable the little toadlets are when they first emerge from the dam. Morgan Hendricks showed little sister Lizelle how tiny they are. Fortunately there were not many that needed our help to cross the road – and no dead babies were found – all good. After the slightly soggy rescue everyone deserved a slap-up breakfast at the Coffee Corner. Graham and Liam Walton tucked in and showed everyone how it’s done.

FINDING FAIRIES IN THE FOREST

In December we will go looking for fairies in the milkwood forest. It combines fun and excitement with a dollop of interesting information – known as edutainment. The adventure will run on four evenings – 6, 8, 13 and 15 December, so there should be a day to suit everyone – young and old. We’ll talk about the grottoes that gave the beach its name and walk through the milkwood forest and talk about forest ecology and some famous milkwood trees. It will be dark in the forest, so be sure to bring a light. We can’t promise that we will see fairies, but we understand that they love children so they are bound to appear when children call. The cost for this adventure is R100 for adults, R50 for children and R250 for a family of 4. There will be a maximum of 15 per group, so please book early on anina.wcc@gmail.com

HOY’S KOPPIE SAUNTER

By popular demand we are again sauntering around Hoy’s Koppie this year. Please book the date – Wednesday 21 December at sunset. We will hear a short explanation of why Hoy’s Koppie is so special botanically and ecologically that is was included in Fernkloof Nature Reserve. Then we’ll saunter around the Koppie to watch the sun setting. There will be no moon, so after dark our lights on the Koppie will be spectacular. After taking our seats on the steps to the summit, we’ll all join in a rousing sing-along. Let’s wow the people parked on Rotary Drive with our voices and lights. No booking is required for this adventure, so just turn up at 20h00. Your donation of R20 will be much appreciated and used to #RespectAndProtect our environment.

I

n the mid-19th century the early inhabitants of Hermanuspietersfontein called it “Klip Kop” – an isolated hill rising some 75 meters above sea-level on the otherwise flat plain on which their village lay. The origin of the name was fairly obvious to anyone looking at the koppie. It comprises two parts: a sloping lower area, gradually descending to about 40 meters above sea-level, with luxuriant fynbos growth and dotted with huge rocks and stones. These had obviously been eroded away from the steep, almost perpendicular cliffs of the upper part of the koppie, leaving a surface of grey stone. Either the cliffs or the fallen rocks or both could have been the origin of the term “Klip Kop”, which remained the name till well into the 20th century. However, today everyone knows the hill as “Hoy’s Koppie”. Why is that? Sir William Hoy was one of the most charismatic figures in Hermanus history, a Scottish-born head of the Cape and South African Railways in the 1920s who fell in love with Hermanus and visited the village repeatedly for the fishing and the relaxed and restful lifestyle. He regularly stayed at the Marine Hotel. One of his greatest pleasures was to climb Klip Kop with his gillie, Danie Woensdregt, of an evening, and look out over Walker Bay and plan the next day’s fishing. On his death, his wife, Lady Gertrude Hoy informed Woensdregt that Sir William had expressed a wish to be buried at the crest of the Koppie. Woensdregt made arrangements, including the construction of the first formal path on the Koppie. Later, Lady Gertrude was buried alongside her husband. And so “Klip Kop” became “Hoy’s Koppie”

and both graves remain preserved at the highest point of the koppie. The dominant explanation for the existence of Hoy’s Koppie is that it was created by wave action cutting away softer material around a core of harder sandstone. As the shoreline receded over time the core of hard sandstone was left standing. The koppie may be visualized as a tall, vertical headland of harder material, isolated from the surrounding plain by wave action, and left standing once the sea drew back. In this sense it is like a tall Gearing’s Point. It is primarily composed of quartzitic sandstone, approximately 440 million years old. Residents and visitors to Hermanus have long enjoyed walking the paths on Hoy’s Koppie and recent improvements to the paths by the Cliff Path Management Group and the Municipality have made the outing even more enjoyable. Since 2008 the main contour path that takes you right around the Koppie has been widened to 1.2 meters and provided with a permanent surface of exposed aggregate concrete to make for easy walking in all weathers. The original entrance on the north side has an improved parking area and the path up to the contour path has likewise been given a permanent surface. This path and the contour path are now fully wheelchair friendly, giving a total 1.2 kilometers of wheelchair friendly paths. Because of the terrain in the immediate vicinity of the Hoys’ graves, steps have had to be retained, but this 180 meter stretch has also be repaired and modernized. A second entrance to the Koppie has been created on the south side, with steps and a boardwalk rising from the car park adjacent to the United Church and the Primary School. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of Hermanus, the Fernkloof Mountains and Walker Bay from various points along the paths, through the best view still remains form the top of the Koppie. Natural fynbos grows in abundance on the lower slopes, especially since a fire in 2008 worked its usual magic in taking out old growth and stimulating the appearance and germination of species not seen for a long time on the Koppie. Because of the orientation of the Koppie different varieties of fynbos are found on either side of the Koppie. The cave is also worth a look. It is very old. Artefacts and debris found there by two archaeological expeditions put the age at between 250 000 and 50 000 years old, Rudimentary scraping tools from the Middle Stone Age were found there in both scientific excavations. The cave was once close to the sea as can be seen by the wide variety of shells and shell fish unearthed. The early inhabitants of the cave derived most of their food from the sea, causing Dr James Drury, one of the scientists doing the excavation to remark: “The small quantity of animal remains makes one wonder whether there was a scarcity of animals in this place or whether they (the cave dwellers) were just too lazy to hunt.” On a fine summer’s day Hoys Koppie offers you an easy walk in a splendid natural environment (it is part of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve), with interesting historical associations and exceptional views. No wonder that Hoys Koppie is widely known as the “jewel of Hermanus.” Historical sites in Hermanus, produced by the Hermanus History Society and written by Robin Lee.

7 Stars Energy Drink 2016/17 Trans Agulhas Challenge hits our East coast this December

T

he idea started with Sparks Esterhuyzen, well-known inhabitant of Hermanus and still involved with training just-out-of-school young people at See- and Sand, Hermanus. By then Sparks had already rowed 5 times around the most southern point of South Africa, the longest being with a canoe from Nature's Valley to Cape Town (± 700km).

He shared the idea with Jean Engelbrecht from Stellenbosch. Jean conveyed this to his Inflatable Boat Club members and after a meeting or two, they decided to do this route in their Inflatable Boats. Thus, the Trans Agulhas Inflatable Boat Challenge was born. It was not as easy as just that. When "Die Burger" – a local Afrikaans Newspaper and the first sponsor – first announced the Challenge, every one said it was too dangerous and couldn't be done. Nobody gave any notice and just went about their business of organizing the first Trans Agulhas Challenge. On the 26 December 1988 thirty three boats started the first Trans Agulhas Challenge at Nature's Valley. The finish was at the Old Harbour, Hermanus on the 3rd January 1989 and everyone agreed that the Trans Agulhas Challenge came to stay. It is impossible to tell all that happened on the first Trans Agulhas Challenge. A very thick book will have to be written one day to convey all the tales. Interesting to know, is that the organizing committee consisted out of 5 members. Between them they had 2 vehicles, of which 1 broke down at Vleesbaai. Today, the Trans Agulhas Challenge is a world class event, hosted every year by Agulhas Inflatable Boat Club (AIBC). The Trans Agulhas Challenge has started the Long Haul events hosted by SAIBA and other boat clubs. The design of the Inflatable boat has changed over the years, and we believe that it is because of the Trans Agulhas Challenge, testing man, boat and machine alike. There is just no other challenge like it. This year marks the 29th Trans Agulhas Challenge and we hope to continue for many more years. Picture by Jaco Louw

Elvis se seun tree 21 Desember op in Die Blêr Teater by Hermanus Hoërskool R145 per persoon. Vir besprekings kontak Amanda op 082 870 6744

About Jackal and the Wind

Jackal and the Wind is a four-piece indie/folk band from Stellenbosch, South Africa. Comprised of Christopher Kruger on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Cobus von Wielligh on bass, Peter Kruger on lead guitar and Johan Pretorius on drums, the band has been gaining steady acclaim since its inception in 2013. Their signature track, 'The Ukulele Song' put them on the map when it gained a cult following among the student demographic with 200 000+ impressions on SoundCloud and top honours on the Digital Forest Live Sessions in the same year. The band's whimsical name is reminiscent of the yearning of the jackal and the intangible emotion of a howling wind, and pays homage to their wish to whisk their listeners away to a world without boundaries by means of their emotive harmonies. Jackal and the Wind releases debut single. ‘The People Sing’, is now available for digital download from iTunes and Deezer. The band hosted a listening session of their newly released single at Digital Forest Studios. Media and press influencers were invited to enjoy an exclusive introduction to the rest of their debut album in the form of a live studio performance. The event was a great success; listen to ‘The People Sing’ by clicking here. ‘The People Sing’ has already gained commercial acclaim on no less than seventeen local radio stations with young and vibrant listener demographics. The track, which revolves around a person who finds themselves in a social situation that they want to escape, was recorded at Digital Forest Studios and mastered by non-other than Joe LaPorta, who is known for having mastered the likes of The Killers, Vampire Weekend and Imagine Dragons.
