In addition, we also give you the chance to put your signature spin on our exclusive range of home furniture with our custom design finishes option. And why not add a custom painting? Get to know AnnaBelle! We asked owner and staff to define the brand… What is the story behind your store’s name? We feel it encompasses our style – it’s pretty, it’s feminine, and it’s French! The owner was looking for a name that would resonate with women; a complex tribe filled with Annas and Belles. It also means ‘easy to love’, which perfectly describes our unique pieces… Why the rabbit? Simply put, it’s the owner’s good luck charm! When did the idea for your brand come about? The desire to open a store has been there for a very long time. Hermanus is growing, and with the new mall came the perfect opportunity to realise the dream. The concept was never negotiable, it was simply a question of when. When I visit your store, what will I find? You will find a huge selection of beautiful items: from bath products to ceramics, furniture and candles to greenery. Our hope is that upon entering, you will be transported to another world! We aim to offer you anything you might want in your home, and we even offer you the chance to customise your furniture’s finishes (for that extra bit of flair). Where do you get your inspiration from? The owner considers herself to be a dreamer, and loves to hunt for antiques, but truly, as a team our inspiration comes from everywhere. Through our collective travels and interests in design, we have managed to put together a unique combination of styles that say: AnnaBelle! Personally, what’s your favourite range or item? Without a doubt, we fell in love with a black cupboard from France the minute we turned the key to open it – its sounds and smells of days gone by, filled with stories we can only imagine ourselves living in! What extra services do you offer? Apart from friendly service, we offer a custom-made furniture option, as well as a custom painting service! I’m looking for something specific – can you help me find it? Of course! We will source any product for you and even have an item altered to your specific requirements. What does your team structure look like? Our team is dynamic, and we are all in different age groups. We each play to our strengths and brings skills to the table that complement the whole. The common thread that binds us together is our love for beautiful décor! Favourite shopping destinations? The French countryside for sure!

Why is Christmas just like a day at the office? You do all the work and the fat guy with the suit gets all the credit. - Anonymous Hi Splash Readers

Santa Claus, also known as Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Kris Kringle, Father Christmas, or simply Santa (Santy in Hiberno-English), is a legendary figure originating in Western Christian culture who is said to bring gifts to the homes of well-behavedchildren on Christmas Eve and the early morning hours of Christmas Day. The modern Santa Claus grew out of traditions surrounding the historical Saint Nicholas, a fourth-century Greek bishop and gift-giver of Myra, the British figure of Father Christmas and the Dutch figure of Sinterklaas (himself also based on Saint Nicholas).

Santa Claus is generally depicted as a portly, joyous, white-bearded man— sometimes with spectacles—wearing a red coat with white fur collar and cuffs, white-fur-cuffed red trousers, and black leather belt and boots and who carries a bag full of gifts for children. This image became popular in the United States and Canada in the 19th century due to the significant influence of the 1823 poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" and of caricaturist and political cartoonist Thomas Nast. This image has been maintained and reinforced through song, radio, television, children's books, films, and advertising.

Merry Xmas… Geseënde Kersfees… Feliz Natal…

ne thing that I know for sure (as that wise woman Oprah used to say) is that beauty speaks to the soul (no matter what your belief system). We all know that the world is going through challenging times (the Politician’s euphemism for OMG!) but Pretty will remain Gorgeous/ Mooi/Schön/Pragtig/Beau/Bonita/Entle in any language. And there is nothing more fabulous than receiving a handpicked gift, beautifully wrapped. Don’t forget the hand-written card (computer versions don’t count). The only feeling that comes close to that, is handpicking a present, gift wrapping it and then watching the receiver open it and… love it. Jackpot. Happiness is….! My cell phone was recently stolen. (Happiness it was not…) Again a subject that all human beings (no matter age, religion, politics) can relate to. Yes, I was back in my beloved country for barely a week and amazingly my phone

disappeared and now apparently resides in Bellville (according to my ‘find my iphone’ app). The phone has since been blocked, blacklisted, stopped, sim swapped (oops, I first wrote sin swopped) and no one can do anything with it, they tell me. So how come people bother stealing it? Erm… Let me think. I suspect you CAN do something with it and then force me/ the victim to buy another one. Why is Miss ‘Let’s be Positive no matter What’ sharing this piece of negative info? Actually I’m trying to dissuade my darling husband (aka gadget lover) and I suspect many other mansmense/ men/ hommes from buying their beloved wife/girlfriend/woman/ mistress a cell phone for Christmas. Ag nee man. Buy yourself that amazing smart phone/ big screen TV, (insert electronic device), liefie. Please refer to photographs attached. We (women) like pretty. Breathtaking. Figuring out a new cell phone and APPS for the next three months does not make Mommy happy. A beautiful handbag, shoes, art work, one of a kind

antique butter dish… Now we’re talking darling/ Querida/Liebling/ Skattebol/ Schat/ Uhlobo… For someone who promised the pictures are going to do the talking, there’s an awful amount of chit-chat happening, I know. So Final word… When I was in Provence, France I discovered the French version of Hermanus (minus the whales). I hadn’t heard of it before either. But if I didn’t live in the best place in the world already, L’sle would be high up on my list. A river runs through it, (literally) and it has hundreds of art/antique shops and an equal amount of restaurants and bars that line the river. Seeing as shopping is one of the things I do for a living I had just hit pay dirt. Needless to say you will notice a couple of precious articles in Amulet that I picked up in the North and schlepped all the way here in my suitcases… Ho ho ho…!

It’s that time of year when most of the world feels united. Sort of. I ’m writing this month’s article in English specially for Sue at the Hospice Shop (and a few other English-speaking readers) who don’t understand my mother-tongue. Even better, I ’m just going to print several photos of my favourite things. No words needed.

Karwyderskraal I’m a keen motorcycle rider and prefer off road to tar roads. During one of my expeditions I came upon the Karwyderskraal Road and saw an abandoned house in the trees off the road. My nature for exploring led me to this old house and even further down a deserted road to stables, then a graveyard with these enormous grave like structures. Indeed, I had found the horse cemetery from Ella Gordon. The house was built by Ella Gordon and she and her dog are buried in the corner of the old cemetery. Sadly, neglected and it seems nobody cares. The cemetery is still in use and I see fresh graves, but the old is forgotten. Even the old house is open and used for temporary accommodation, no sense of preserving the old. Isabella Gordon Dove Colston 1873 to 1958 Resided in the Hemel and Aarde Valley, Karwyderskraal and Voëlklip area from 1902 till her death in 1958.She was unmarried and lived an almost solitary life. She was a successful farmer without any male assistance or supervision and did

most of the manual labour herself. In her youth she was extremely strong, easily lifting 90kg bags of horse feed unaided. Her diet was strictly vegetarian When she arrived in 1902 she bought a portion of the farm Braemar in the Hemelen-Aarde Valley and built a house. Having short hair, wearing men’s clothes and smoking a long pipe often resulted in her being taunted and jeered by passers-by. So in 1907 she moved to Karwyderskraal to get away from the taunts and jeers. Her farm now forms part of the Hamilton Russell Estate. Isabella was born in Scotland in 1873 to middle class parents. When she was 7 years old her mother died. She was home schooled and when she was 18 years old she studied music and received private tuition at university level in drama, English, French, history and other subjects. Between 1887-1893 Ella received music and acting training and became very involved in the popular variety shows of the time. After her father’s death in 1897, Ella being fluent in French decided to travel to France with a theatre group and circus, and here she became involved in training horses.

About 1900 she arrived in South Africa and performed in the Tivoli Theatre in Cape Town. During this period, she was able to play many roles whether acting or being part of a circus. On the outset of the Anglo Boer War the entertainment industry suffered thus Ella had to seek other jobs. How Ella learnt about Hermanus is unknown, but it is thought that she may have learnt about the Hermanus area when she met and befriended Clara Marie Markgraaff in Cape Town. Clara was a music teacher and through her nephew Reverend Schaberg, a Moravian minister, had connections with Genadendal. Ella moved to the Hermanus area about 1902, buying a portion of Braemar. After five years at Braemar, Ella moved to Karwyderskraal in 1907. Ella made the bricks for and built her own house in a very individualistic style, painted frescoes on the walls and made the furniture. Clara Markgraaff lived on the farm with her for a period, doing the cooking and housework, which Ella disliked. Later Clara moved to Genadendal where she died in 1940 and where she is buried. Ella arranged concerts and plays with the children of the Karwyderskraal area, some of which were performed at the Caledon

Martin Etsebeth Amateur Dramatic Society. She was kind but was also known to be a disciplinarian and expected everyone on the farm to attend Sunday church services. Wine was prohibited on the farm – not even vines were allowed to be planted. She and her labourers built a school, a church, stables and more dwellings around her own house and created a healthy community life. She had abundant love for her horses and dogs. She taught the horses many tricks, they could step out in time to music and she would ride and train her horses daily. Her white horse, Boysums did many tricks, danced to music and his headstone in the horse cemetery reads: “Boysums, the Wonder Horse. We shall meet to part no more. R.I.P.” When the horses died they were given a specially devised, formal funeral and then buried in the horsegraveyard including a tombstone that she had specially constructed. The horse graveyard is the only one of its kind in South Africa. Source: http://www.hermanus-history-society.co.za/ellagordon-a-real-hermanus-character/

deelgeneem. I did it all. Met my pokkelmagie en my pa se fietsrybril het ek daar gaan staan soos een of ander David Hasselhoff gekruis met ’n honger Afrika-kind.

rooftop tent – yes or no?

T

here are those that consider a roof tent as less suitable to camp in the bush and then there are those that see it as the best invention since sliced bread. Equipping yourself to do the safari-thing, there are as many choices as there are options. Sleeping in a tent on mother earth or in a roof tent away from crawling creatures. Similarly, the choice between an off-road trailer or a bush caravan, if the budget allows for either. As with most things in life, one has to choose between the lesser of what you consider to be the evils. A year ago we were part of a group that did the Twee-Rivieren to Nossob Eco trail in the Kgalagadi Park. No trailers were allowed. We opted for an ‘on-the-ground’ tent, so did two other couples, one couple had a rooftop tent. One couple only brought their tent’s extension, thinking it was the main tent. Thus they had no tent. In the veld you pull together. The ranger ended sleeping in the load bay of his 4x4 bakkie, with the add-a-room pulled over the railings. But the

SPLASH 12

absolute shock when they realised they had no tent in the middle of lion country... Let’s consider the glass to be half-full and start with the positives of a rooftop tent. Firstly, it goes up within minutes and your ‘bedroom’ is ready. Then, in the bush, with no fences and lions roaring about, it is with much relief that you are snug in bed. An elephant can still bother you, but as long as you stay on top, leopards, hyenas, cheetahs and lions are not a threat. Comfortable and safe. In the morning you simply chuck everything in and close the lid. With an on-the-ground tent, setting up can take up to 25 minutes or longer and a similar time to take down again. Also you are prone to soil-bound creatures – spiders, snakes, scorpions and other ‘nasties’. But, you can leave your tent behind when you go sight-seeing. Negatives? Rooftop tents are for the fit and able – thus the younger generation, perhaps pre 65. You need to be a bit of an acrobat to climb up the ladder, about 1.8m high and then negotiate in a rather limited space, to get into bed in one piece.

Our trip entailed stopping at each camp and staying for only one night. Then a rooftop tent is ideal. But what if you are camping for a few days? Basically you have to ‘break up’ camp every time you want to go for a bush drive. Mobility is then a problem. The other concern that seems to be easily forgotten is over-loading your vehicle, given the maximum permissible weight that can be loaded on to the roof. All vehicles have a maximum rated weight on the roof. It varies between 80 kg and 120 kg. With a rack, roof top tent, a gas bottle or two, the supposedly ever-present high-lift jack, a jerry can here and there, plus water containers, the permissible weight can be easily exceeded. This creates various safety issues. The point of gravity shifts much higher. The vehicle’s road holding worsens dramatically. The increased weight reduces acceleration and increases the stopping distance. Also it is hugely detrimental to the aerodynamic ability – the car basically becomes a brick and you pay a huge penalty at the fuel pump. One also has to take the GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) into account. Exceeding the GVM, not only make you liable for a fine,

but can also mean the end of your journey. If stopped, weighed and found to be exceeding the limit, you will have to lighten the vehicle. It comes back to horses for courses. With a 4x4 trip, such as we did, where you basically drive all day and then set up camp, to only sleep for one night, the roof top tent makes sense. Provided you can get into and out of it without breaking a proverbial leg. Should you however be doing a safari, staying over in one spot for a few days, a tent or off-road trailer or bush caravan will make more sense. Enjoy your 4x4, stay safe and remember – to off-road is to live! www.the4x4guy.co.za Somerset West 082 571 6568

Looking back, looking ahead,

... All in a years work s k n a h t Giving 2017 has been a wonderful year of growth and discovery for us! We’ve expanded our rooms to include 3 reception areas, 9 consultation rooms and as always a warm and welcoming environment for our special clients. Lindi has successfully completed her 5th Lighthouse to Lighthouse walk. This is a charity walk that sees 120 ladies walk 100km along the coast to raise funds for a chosen charity. Lindi will be walking again next year. Feel free to support this noble cause. You’ll remember how many babies were born to Refine staff in 2016? All our Refine babies turned from babas to toddlers, and mommies transformed back into their beautiful bodies…with a little help from our treatments. Lindi and Michelle represented Refine at the National Congress of Cosmetic Doctors, where the duo demonstrated a state of the art peel in front of international professors and guests. Dr Emett flew the coop a little, and has been cited giving lectures amongst the top aesthetic doctors from SA and abroad. She was invited to attend a congress in Sweden as well as a cadaver dissection workshop in London. We gained two wonderful therapists to ease your pain and pamper you. Laruchka joins Refine as a highly trained professional therapist. She was awarded a bursary and has recently written final exams of a 4 year diploma specializing in Aesthetics. Mugelaine has successfully managed the LPG body toning machine and officially became part of the team in May. We launched more body slimming treatments. The LPG endermologie machine from France is a body toning, slimming, shaping machine and treatments can be completed with EMS(electro-musclestimulation). Ensuring not only a slim trim waistline but a well shaped and toned physique. Skinceuticals was launched at Refine, bringing this top quality medical grade product to Hermanus. Dermaplaning has also been introduced. Another innovative procedure involving a blade which gently and painlessly removes vellus hair from the face( peach fuzz). This procedure also exfoliates dead skin cells as it moves effortlessly across the skin. Our “Three-for-Me” campaign produced some fabulous results. This novel way of incorporating different forms of laser for ultimate results has given us wonderful before and after photos. Clients participating in this “Three-for-Me” campaign are extremely happy with their results. The highlight of our year and the grand finale was the Pamper Day which we held in October in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness and to celebrate the opening of our new Medical Aesthetic wing. Our loyal clients were pampered with facials, gifts, hair treatments and much more. Our little way of saying a great big thank you for the support.

Planning in respect of the development of rugby in the Southern Hemisphere on and off the field as a spectator sport has failed dismally. The spectators are after all the clients whose needs have to be catered for. If this does not happen, interest in the game fades and eventually so does the game. If it was not for New Zealand’s achievements on the field the Southern Hemisphere would not be anywhere. Local support in SA is dwindling and the current competitions are not capturing the spectators’ imaginations. Some serious thought needs to go into the future of the sport. Looking at the game itself and the manner in which the Springboks played against Ireland there is a lot to say, but I want to restrict my comments to the off-the-field matters and in particular to the coaching and to the specialists that must take the blame along with the coach. How is it possible that a team can play a magnificent test against the All Blacks at Newlands and then perform so badly in their next test? Something went very wrong somewhere. The methodology of ‘modern’ coaches explaining to players via their computers what they are supposed to do, is the downfall of South African rugby! You simply cannot play rugby on an average statistics basis. Individual brilliance cannot be catered for in this way and it is exactly individual play that changes the flow of the water and is the lifeblood of the winning game. Look for these individual brilliant jewels in the game and enjoy them. Each position’s jewels are packed into that particular position. SPLASH 16

Dok het gepraat van verfynde spel. Geniet juis dit. Lekker kyk

The 'World's Toughest Inflatable Boat Challenge' starts every year on 28 December at Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. It is a fast-paced, action-packed water sports event with over 60 inflatable boats battling it out on the waves. This most prestigious – in the world – 5 day race will visit beaches along the coast between Nature's Valley and Fish Hoek where the race will finish on 1 January (see "Stages" for more details).

Where – and how – it all began The idea started with Sparks Esterhuyzen, wellknown inhabitant of Hermanus and still involved with training just-out-of-school young people at See- and Sand, Hermanus. By then Sparks had already rowed 5 times around the most southern point of South Africa, the longest being with a canoe from Nature's Valley to Cape Town (± 700km).

SPLASH 20

He shared the idea with Jean Engelbrecht from Stellenbosch. Jean conveyed this to his Inflatable Boat Club members and after a meeting or two, they decided to do this route in their Inflatable Boats. Thus, the Trans Agulhas Inflatable Boat Challenge was born.

first Trans Agulhas Challenge. A very thick book will have to be written one day to convey all the tales. Interesting to know, is that the organizing committee consisted out of 5 members. Between them they had 2 vehicles, of which 1 broke down at Vleesbaai.

It was not as easy as just that. When "Die Burger" – a local Afrikaans Newspaper and the first sponsor – first announced the Challenge, every one said it was too dangerous and couldn't be done. Nobody gave any notice and just went about their business of organizing the first Trans Agulhas Challenge.

Today, the Trans Agulhas Challenge is a world class event, hosted every year by Agulhas Inflatable Boat Club (AIBC). The Trans Agulhas Challenge has started the Long Haul events hosted by SAIBA and other boat clubs. The design of the Inflatable boat has changed over the years, and we believe that it is because of the Trans Agulhas Challenge, testing man, boat and machine alike. There is just no other challenge like it.

On the 26 December 1988 thirty-three boats started the first Trans Agulhas Challenge at Nature's Valley. The finish was at the Old Harbour, Hermanus on the 3rd January 1989 and everyone agreed that the Trans Agulhas Challenge came to stay. It is impossible to tell all that happened on the

This year marks the 30th Trans Agulhas Challenge and we hope to continue for many more years.

Are Sole Mandates in the Interest of the Pam Snyman

Property Seller?

Sole and exclusive selling mandates are often advocated by real estate agents. But this practice needs to be interrogated to ensure that it is in the interest of the property owner who wishes to sell his/ her investment. Why are Sole Mandates so important to the agency that some even reward their agents with the most Sole Mandates with prizes in order to motivate them to sign up as many as possible? Pam Snyman, owner of REDZetc Real Estate. Real Experts who has been involved in the property profession since 1986, has her own ideas about this pressing issue:

“It is obviously in the interest of the estate agent who comes with a well-prepared presentation in order to convince the seller to grant a Sole Mandate that keeps other estate agents at bay and in the case of an Exclusive Sole Mandate even prevents the seller from selling his/her own property.” The question that needs to be answered is: How can this be in the interest of a serious seller? The seller’s goal is to sell the property in the shortest possible time at the best possible price with the least inconvenience. The seller must therefore be able to decide which the best possible route is to obtain these goals and should consider SPLASH 24

ALLEEN MANDAAT

the salient facts surrounding the granting of a Sole and Exclusive Mandate, a Joint Mandate with two or perhaps three agencies or an Open Mandate to more agents of the seller’s choice. Issues to consider relating to Sole Mandates are: •

the number of past sales resulting directly from sole mandates,

prices obtained in relation to the asking price and

the time frames within which the sales took place

Now, if one analyses most estate agents’ sole mandate presentations, it becomes clear that only ‘benefits to the seller’ are listed. The benefits to the agent are conveniently absent! The benefits that are bandied about include promises of better marketing to a wider audience and a better price being obtained. Really? This kind of argument comes from 20 years ago – before buyers were as informed as they are today and marketing strategies consisted out of newspaper and magazine advertisements. Today we all market to the international market via technology and good marketing does not depend only on who has the biggest ad in the newspaper! Things are much more equal…sellers now rely on professional, well-qualified and knowledgeable estate agents to market their properties through quality service via relationship marketing. The real estate market has evolved. We at REDZetc promote our service by not selling property, but getting people to buy from us… And since when has the absence of competition brought about better prices? It is also imperative that the owner be given the opportunity to exclude potential purchasers (that may have shown an

interest in the property in the past) before a Sole Mandate proceeds. If this is not suggested and advised by the estate agent, the seller can find him/herself in the unenviable position of being obliged to pay commission to more than one agency. If a Sole Mandate resulted from any direct marketing, the mandator also always has the right to cancel the mandate within 5 business days without reason or penalty if he/she so wishes. Truth is, if a property is being marketed by one estate agency only, it results in increased exposure for the real estate company and in turn the agent uses the well exposed brand to gain more Sole Mandates. A good strategy…for the agent! If the agent requires a sole mandate for brand exposure and to control the available stock, then sole mandates are being canvassed for the wrong reasons. This strategy also causes many Sole Mandates to be signed at inflated prices, resulting in longer marketing and sales periods with over-exposure of the property … inevitably resulting in a lower selling price! In essence, a Sole Mandate may be the correct route for the seller if it is obtained for the right reasons, i.e. so that the mandate can be serviced in the most efficient manner in order to provide the best possible service to the seller. We believe that a Sole Mandate is the necessary route to take when there is a committed and serious seller alienating his/ her property that is objectively priced to sell and is in essence a saleable property in terms of supply and demand. If not, a quick sale at fair market value is highly unlikely. For further information, kindly contact Pam at 082 8000 867, or any of our REDZetc agents in the area.

Geskenke

I

The Franchise That May Never Disappear - by Andrew Wills

The initial film, Star Wars, was predicted to be a flop, so no merchandise was created to debut with the film’s release. As you can probably imagine, the Star Wars toy and merchandise franchise has grown considerably since the Christmas of 1977.

A

long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, there was a little sci-fi movie called – Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. At the time, though, it was just known as Star Wars, and it created a franchise unlike anything seen before. In 2005, Forbes magazine estimated that the Star Wars franchise, from the time it began in the late seventies, had generated more than twenty billion dollars in revenue, and with six big screen success stories, at least three spinoff films, five licensed television shows, and thousands of books, comic books, and toys, it's no surprise. What might be a surprise, though, is that by the time Star Wars creator George Lucas finished the first film, he was over-budget, out of time, and convinced the film would be a flop. Early screenings of the film did little to improve Lucas' ideas that the film would be any kind of success, but when it was finally released in the summer of 1977, the film earned nearly seven million dollars in its first weekend. More than Great Films Ask any Star Wars fan, though, and they'll tell you it's not just about the movies, it's also about the associated merchandise. The initial film was predicted to be a flop, so no merchandise was created to debut with the film's release. The toy company, Kenner, though had purchased the license to sell associate products By Christmas of 1977, demand was so high, Kenner created an "Early Bird Special" kit. The kit held a certificate fans could send in for four 3 ž inch figures as soon as they became available. On Christmas morning, thousands of kids got empty cardboard envelopes that held only a display stand, a Star Wars club card, a few stickers, and a certificate they could put their name and address on, mail in, and wait for several months for the first Star Wars toys ever produced to arrive. Months later, lots of kids did get Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, R2-D2, and Chewbacca in the mail, and years later, these four figures are considered to be some of the most valuable action figures on the collectors' market today. Explosive Industry Growth As you can probably imagine, the Star Wars toy and merchandise franchise has grown considerably since the Christmas of 1977. Once Kenner geared up the production machine, it slowed for no one. From additional action figures to vehicles, playsets, and lightsabers, the vintage Star Wars toy market had everything. As Episodes V and VI were released, more toys hit the market. T-shirts, bed sheets, toothbrushes, combs, and watches were all part of the marketing campaign as well. After the release of Return of the Jedi, though, the Star Wars marketing machine slowed considerably. People seemed to think the Star Wars market was nearing the end. However, in the late 1990s, a new line of Star Wars action figures was released. Dubbed "The Power of the Force" line, these green carded figures created a whole new generation of collectors, and with the release of the special edition of the original trilogy, and the subsequent release of Star Wars Episode I, the marketing machine kicked back into high gear. From bubble bath to sandals, the Star Wars name can be found on almost anything these days, and with talk of additional television series, DVDs, and even with Episode 8 hitting cinemas this Decembert, it's hard to tell when the franchise will ever slow down.
