ltans, so reken die medici. Wel, Dokter ek is bevrees menige digter, komponis en skrywer sal van jou verskil. Om nie te praat van elke tweede verliefde paartjie nie. Die hart is baie meer as net ‘n orgaan wat bloed deur die are pomp. Nog nie oortuig nie? Hoe romanties klink die volgende vir jou: My pomp is aan stukke oor jou. Jy is my pomp se punt… Pomplam. Mmm… ek vermoed ‘n oorveeg is aan die kom. Dokter of te not. I remember my first Valentine’s in Amulet. I was stunned to realise that the older generation simply don’t buy each other gifts on the 14th – not so much as a melted chocolate or a wilted red rose. (granted, red roses are ridiculously overpriced this time of year and nothing lasts in this heat) But don’t you think your loved one deserves a little something? Even if it’s just to congratulate him/her for surviving yet another year by your side. Trust me once your partner (who snores/talks incessantly/fill in appropriate irritation) is no longer with you, you’d be only too grateful to be able to buy her a little trinket to show her that she still makes your old ticker go boompity boomp. (in a good way, not in ‘call the ambulance!’ way)

A CHANGE OF HEART Ticker of Pomp, ons Suid-Afrikaners moet na ons harte kyk. Nee, ek praat nie nou van cholesterol en Tim Noakes se banting dieët nie… Ons moet ons harte versag… (Sien? Weer eens gaan ‘pomp’ nie werk nie) Ek praat van jou hart verander, jou houding jeens jou land en jou land se mense… Begin sommer vandag, hier in lieflike Hermanus. Help ‘n vreemdeling, glimlag vir iemand in die straat, groet die straatveër… Ja probeer dit, jy sal verbaas wees oor die positiewe reaksie. Meeste van ons kan nie meer bekostig om oorsee te gaan kerjakker nie en as ek my ore uitleen aan die pessimiste gaan dit glo net erger raak. Ja, ja… ek hoor daai een al van 2008 af en hier is ek darem nog – in een stuk, dankie. Goed, ek ry nie ‘n splinternuwe kar nie, maar ek kan elke dag die see sien. Duisende toeriste kom al die pad hierheen om ons beeldskone paradys te beleef… Ek kan jou verseker ek het geen begeerte om nou in Europa te wees nie… waar vreemdelinge met agterdog bejeen word, waar mense bang is om na ure uit te gaan, waar ‘n bom enige oomblik kan ontplof. Onthou jy die tagtigs – Suid-Afrikaners het met dieselfde vrees rondgeloop, ons het gevrees dat ons na die 94 verkiesing sonder huise gaan sit… En hier is ons nog steeds. Spekvet en vol kritiek oor alles en almal. Ons vriende en kinders wat geïmmigreer het kom klokslag elke Desember kuier, want hierdie is huis, hierdie is Afrika… Ons wil eintlik nêrens anders woon nie… Meeste Suid-Afrikaners wil net in vrede saamleef. En ons kan… jy moet net jou hart verander. Jy. Nie die man langs jou nie. Jy tannie, JY oom… die kinders sal volg, want hulle maak soos hulle ouers maak.

KINDERS, MOENIE MET DIE WATER SPEEL NIE… Ek is nou nog verstom oor die duisende liters water wat gewone mense aangery het na droogte geteisterde areas toe. En hulle het nie gevra aan wie gaan die water nie, hulle het net gegee. Want ons is eintlik ‘n goedhartige spul hier onder aan die suidpunt. Dis nie lekker om te sien hoe jou medemens, kinders en diere suffer nie. Ek is seker daar was siniese mense wat gewonder het wat gaan een bottel water nou help? Daardie selfde siniese mense voorspel nou al vir jare hierdie land se ondergang en lig self nie ‘n vinger om die situasie te verbeter nie. En terwyl ek hierdie skryf, luister ek na ‘n nuusberig waarin ESKOM vra vir nog ‘n verhoging omdat hulle miljarde/triljoene (ek weet nie meer hoeveel nulle deesdae in gedrang is nie) verloor het agv die verminderde vraag na elektrisiteit?! Ouens! Seriously? Dis wat julle ons gevra het om te doen! (Ten duurste op TV ge-adverteer en als. Spaar asb. krag. Sit als af, insluitend die swembadpomp ens – onthou julle nie?) En nou moet ons betaal vir die verlies? Nie eers ek, Sannie Sonstraal kan met ‘n positiewe argument vir daai een opkom nie. Ek glo egter vas dat ‘n baie slim Suid-Afrikaner gaan opkom met ‘n alternatiewe, goedkoper plan vir krag en dat ‘n ewe slim landsburger ons gaan help met die waterkrisis. Intussen kan one elkeen ons deeltjie doen en elke druppel spaar en ons bottels vol te maak vir die maer jare.

MY HART POMP TJOKLITS As jy nie iemand spesifiek het om te bederf op Valentynsdag nie, kies iemand om te bederf. Iemand soos liewe Tannie Ria by Hermanus Hoërskool wat elke kind in die skool se naam en storie ken en baie meer doen as wat van haar verwag word. Die vrouens by die viswinkel wat die lekkerste vis in die land braai, Johan wat met ‘n swaar hart regkom sonder sy vrou omdat sy oorsee gaan ponde verdien sodat hulle eendag hul eie huis kan koop… En as jy op 14 Februarie by Amulet aandoen om iemand te bederf, sit ons ‘n ietsie ekstra in jou sakkie, want elkeen van ons verdien en geniet ‘n bederfie, of jy nou ‘n pomp of ‘n hart het.

ACCESS TO EXCESS Reaching out unites community Alta Pretorius

he dream of a caring woman to reach out to people who suffer has developed into an active do-good organisation named “Hermanus Stands Together”, giving hope to people in need. Tronel Meintjes recently received an award for Service Excellence, and was one of the finalists in the Woman of the Year 2015 competition in the Overstrand area. She never expected her simple outreach project to expand the way it did. “I know from first-hand experience how hard it is to grow up poor and depend on prayers and the goodwill of other people for one’s daily needs. I wanted to assist such people in an anonymous way, since pride is always a factor, and people find it hard to admit that they need help. The way we operate, is to do a needs assessment when something is brought to our attention, source the required products and distribute them where needed, without the person at the receiving end being humiliated or exposed. It’s all about human dignity,” says Tronel. “We are always sensitive to people’s feelings.” Hermanus Stands Together was established in May 2013, and is a community based project to assist those in urgent need of food, clothing, housing or work. Other needs may also be considered. The idea is to source excess items to distribute to those in need. The aim is to offer developmental advice and assistance to those in need, and to provide alleviation of daily pressures associated with hardship. HST provides cooked meals, clothing, toys, shoes, school supplies, and other necessities of life to those in need. “This is your community,” says Tronel. “Help us to keep it strong, lively and enjoyable for all who live in it. Your donation or even non-perishable food, canned food or fresh vegetables and meat can make a real difference in someone's life. We regularly liaise with other charities to avoid a lack in functionality.” “My main aim is to never have to say no to people in real need. We try to support the elderly, since their old age pension is inadequate to cover even their basic living costs. I want to enable a child to go on a school camp if his/her parents can’t afford it. Most people are often not even aware of the desperate situations in our midst.” She uses Facebook as the main communication tool, because it is so efficient and fast. “I feel bad when people call me an Angel, since I am merely the facilitator and can’t do anything without caring people’s assistance and donations. I believe in the power of prayer and let God lead me to where the need is the greatest. I have often heard my mother pray for help when I was a child, and within minutes someone would be knocking on our door, providing exactly what we needed most. God uses people to provide for needy people.” Whatever we receive, we distribute: clothes and blankets, or basic food supplies and toiletries. Anything is welcome, including ready cooked meals, tinned food, macaroni or toiletries to make up the hampers. HSS is totally dependent on donations, and Tronel has been delivering up to 80 meals or food hampers per week to needy people. She shows kindness and sympathy to young and old, and sometimes just a willing ear to listen… The Facebook page www.facebook/hermanusstaansaam states clearly that the main aim is to assist people in need. All donations go directly to HSS who distributes it according to need. Meticulous bookkeeping records are being kept and funds are kept for emergencies. The HSS market and festival also help to boost the funds from time to time. Some of the main achievements: v During the course of last year more than 5,600 people received cooked meals, apart from the weekly hampers for approximately 20 people. v Cooked food or food hampers are supplied on a daily basis to at least 30 needy people who would not have had food to eat otherwise. Basic toiletries and even clothes are provided where possible.

v Hundreds of 5 litre water bottles are currently being collected to assist the Round Table project which provides drinking water to Free State towns where water has dried up. Water can be delivered to Harcourts, the Gym next to Eastcliff Spar, and the Old Boys Club, where they will be collected and taken by truck to the Free State. v Before the new school year started, needy school-going children were assisted with school clothes, stationery and food for their lunch boxes. Parents donated school clothes which their children have outgrown to provide for those who are struggling to cope with the price of new school clothes. v On Christmas day sponsored gifts, pudding and Kentucky fried chicken meals were delivered by Tronel Meintjies and her husband to 29 needy families, bringing joy and tears of gratitude. v On New Year’s morning they assisted at Onrus Dutch Reformed Church to transport elderly people, keep them company and give them something to eat and drink. v A special auction was held to raise funds to provide Rosemarie Jansen van Vuuren with a new prosthesis after she lost her leg in an accident. It was provided by Michael Nel Prosthetics in Constantia Medi-Clinic. She is ecstatic to be able to walk again. v During winter time, knitted scarves, caps and mittens are provided for Huis Lettie Theron’s Alzheimer’s section. v Camphill School was provided with educational toys, and the workers received clothes and new overalls. v Hermanus Provincial Hospital received second hand television sets. v A young bride whose wish was to have a beautiful smile on her wedding day, was assisted via motivating a dentist to make her dream come true. v Currently funds are being raised to provide the local cycling postman with a new bicycle after his bike has had its day after many years, and the Post Office can’t afford to replace it. v HSS assisted a family who was living in their car in Kammabaai to return to Pretoria, and liaised with his sister there to find a place to stay and work. v Two families from Paradise Park were assisted after their homes were destroyed in a fire.

Unmask the mask Melasma, is a skin condition that manifests as brown patches on the forehead, cheeks, nose and upper lip. It occurs primarily in women. TREATING THE MASK:

The cause of melasma is complex. • Sun exposure and sun damage—this is the most important avoidable risk factor • Pregnancy—in affected women, the pigment often fades a few months after delivery • Hormone treatments—oral contraceptive pills containing oestrogen and/or progesterone, hormone replacement, intrauterine devices and implants are a factor in about a quarter of affected women, and another big culprit is Hormone imbalances, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome etc. • Photosensitizing medications such as tetracycline’s or anti-psychotic medication as well as new targeted cancer therapy • Medical conditions such as mild ovarian or thyroid dysfunction (such as hypothyroidism-low levels of circulating thyroid hormone) and dysbiosis, thus it is important to consult with a Skin Renewal doctor to diagnose the cause of Hormonal pigmentation/ Melasma. • Scented or deodorant soaps, toiletries and cosmetics—these may cause a phototoxic reaction that triggers melasma, which may then persist long term • Many women who do not present with these risk factors also develop melasma. • Other possible causes include genetic predisposition and exposure to ultraviolet light. This phenomenon, known as melasma, is strictly hormone-related and is a clear example of hormonal effects on the skin pigmentation.

HOW TO GET STARTED:

• Consult with the Reﬁne Doctor to discuss hormone balancing treatment options, such as Bio-Identical Hormone treatment. • Certain medical conditions are key players in your overall health and are the root cause of your pigmentation problems. • Failure to address these conditions will lead to failure of your Hormonal Pigment treatment plan and ALSO lead to chronic disease. • Avoid sun exposure to your face, neck and décolleté. • Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30+ to block the UVA rays, at least 1 teaspoon of sunscreen should be applied daily. • An addition to your sunscreen you should also apply anti-oxidants such as Vitamin C and E to protect against infra-red A. • Taking an oral anti-oxidant supplement such as Ovelle or Heliocare daily is clinically proven to raise one's level of resistance to the sun and also helps to reduce the melanin content in the skin down the line.

he Trans Agulhas is known as the ‘World’s Toughest Inflatable Boat Challenge’. Nowhere else in the world is there something quite like it. It starts every year on 28 December at Plettenberg Bay, South Africa and ends after 5 days of challenging the sea and elements, in the Strand on 1 January. It is a fast-paced, action-packed water sports event with over ±40 inflatable boats battling it out on the waves. Every day sees a long haul event, starting at one point with beach check points in between and finishing at the beach where the next day the challenge will start from again. Every afternoon, at approximately 13h00, there is a Surf Circuit to entertain the crowds. However, every second spend on the water accumulates and counts for the overall times the competitors take to complete this challenge. At the end of each day, the times for the long haul as well as the times for the Surf Circuit is added together to get an overall time for the day for each boat participating. There are 4 classes participating: Novice class: this is for participants who have not entered the Trans Agulhas before as a pilot of a boat. If you were a co-pilot on someone else’s boat before, you can still enter as a Novice when you are participate as the pilot for the first time. This class is only for the guys who race with a standard motor. Stock class: this is participants with standard motors who have done the Trans Agulhas before. Normally the biggest class. Pro-stock class: these motors have been worked on to make them even faster, formerly known as the Blueprint class. Modified class: the big guns, where everything goes on the motor. Normally guys who have vast experience, coming through the ranks from Stock to Pro-Stock and then settling in the Modified class. In every class there is an overall winner after the race / challenge. Everyone participates with his equals (re engines) in the different classes and therefore there cannot be one overall winner for the Trans Agulhas. The first 3 boats in a class, receives a medal, a trophy and a certificate reflecting the time that it took this particular participant to finish this challenge. From the 4th boat downwards in every class, receives a medal and a certificate reflecting the time that it took him to finish this challenge. The Trans Agulhas is about finishing every day and getting there. Yes, there are winners, but everyone that participates and complete are rewarded for his skill and endurance staying in the boat and finishing all the stages of the Trans Agulhas.

There are specific rules, in addition to the normal racing rules, pertaining only to the Trans Agulhas. For example: a boat may run into trouble and not finish a leg of the challenge. But only once, if he cannot finish a 2nd leg, he is out of the race. For the first time he didn’t finish, he receives a DNF (did not finish) which means he gets the last boat in his class’ time plus 10 minutes. This is for the long haul. Should he flip in the Surf Circuit, the wet water rule applies and he is out of that specific race. He will then get a DNF (did not finish) and the last boat in his class’ time plus 2 minutes. However, he does not lose a life on the surf circuit. The biggest challenge this year was fog, delaying the start of the race almost every day. The safety is backed up by a spotter plane and if the plane cannot get airborne, the start was delayed. Ás jy die spesiale dag onthou en vir vroulief, manlief of een van die allerlei vorms van aanhangsels wat mens deesdae kry, wil bederf met ’n onverwagte geskenkie, is jou kop deur en verloop die dag en aand na wense. Maar as jy vergeet, is dit nag. Verskillende strawwe kan aan jou uitgemeet word. Jy kan die kil-behandeling kry. Dan verander jou liefling in ’n afstandige vreemdeling. En dis beter om die tyd te laat gaan oor hierdie dwaling van jou as om dit te probeer regmaak, behalwe as jy ten minste ’n nuwe motor of ’n diamant kan bekostig. Nog ’n manier waarop daar met jou afgereken kan word, is die diepeleed-behandeling. Pyn en weerloosheid straal uit jou geliefde se oë. Dis of jy met ’n gelate skaap-ter-slagting deurmekaar is. Spread havoc in Overstrand

The Overstrand Municipality is inbvestigating the cause of all the recent veld fires in the Overstrand area. The full budget for fire fighting has already been depleted.

eerensee at the Middlevlei Estate near Fisherhaven had to be evacuated n Sunday 17 January due to life-endangering fires close to the wooden houses.

There are close to 200 holiday houses in the Middlevlei Estate, of which only about 18 are permanently inhabited. The fire started just outside Hawston close to the dumping grounds and quickly spread to Meerensee driven by strong winds on Sunday morning. By 12 am it was getting quite close to the wooden houses and rondavels, and the Fire Department arrived, followed by a helicopter and surveillance aircraft. Unfortunately the water dispensing bucket was dislodged when it hit a tree, and they had to wait for another helicopter from Stellenbosch, according to one of the firemen. During that time the fire went out of control and there was a high risk involved. By half past three residents were informed to evacuate within 10 to 15 minutes, since the fire was almost up to the road already. Firemen went from house to house to inform people. "So what do you do if you have only 10 minutes to pack your most needed belongings?" said Alta Pretorius from Wooden House 6. " I just grabbed a small suitcase and gathered my handbag, cell phone, lap top, cameras, battery chargers, address book, Bible, a thick book to read, basic toiletries and two days' clothes. And two 5 liter containers of water. The trip down the cement access road was quite scary, with flames lapping close to my car at stages. Although we were told to go to Hawston High School, the road to Hawston was closed due to fire right next to the road, and we were diverted to the Fisherhaven Yacht Club. There a picnic atmosphere prevailed, with refreshments and chairs set out, facing the lagoon. Yet the ominous dark smoke clouds and occasional bursts of flames high into the sky could be seen from the direction of Meerensee." Around six pm the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Municipal Manager arrived and the Mayor addressed the anxious evacuees. She said although the Overstrand Municipality has already depleted the budget for fire extinguishing, they would do whatever they could to get more assistance. They were also investigating the cause of the various fires which flared up simultaneously. The Stanford fire had also flared up again, as well as the Bot River area. Checkers provided all the food, and where needed, accommodation was facilitated. But by 9 pm the people were told the fire was extinguished and they could return to their homes. The Fire Brigade made a controlled fire to try and contain the fire, but at some stage it flared up to 10 meters into the sky. Some of the residents refused to evacuate. Barry Starnes from Wooden House number two said he would not leave his house. Kobus Hough from Wooden House number four also stayed to try and assist, since he

had lots of experience in fire-fighting on his farm. Their neighbour from Wooden House number 3, Peter Robinson, also stayed to help. Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie also visited them while the fire was raging close by, and tried to persuade them to leave, but they preferred to stay put. The fire department assisted them with extended firehoses which they could use when necessary. The fire raged till midnight and then slowly died down. There was little sleep for the remaining residents though. Elinza Botha from Wooden House number 5 has just moved to Meerensee from Saudi Arabia less than a month ago, hoping to find a better future for her two daughters in this peaceful nature reserve. She also evacuated to Fisherhaven and returned at nine pm when told it was safe. However, just after 10 pm she noticed the flames flaring up high into the sky and decided to rather seek alternative accommodation. She went from hotel to hotel in the middle of the night, but all were fully occupied. She finally found accommodation around 11 pm in Voelklip and spent the night there before returning the next morning. Pam Starnes meanwhile also returned home to her husband Barry who liked playing fireman. We were watching TV around 10 pm when we saw the flames suddenly flare up about twenty meters behind our house - 15 - 20 feet high. Sparks were flying around - it looked like fireworks! If it hadn't been for the diligent firemen and helicopters, we would have been homeless now. We just sat in our chairs and watched the fire till about 1:30 when everything quietened down. Everybody agreed that the firemen were fantastic and they appreciated the personal attention of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor and Municipal Manager who were on the scene and tried to encourage people. They were also grateful to Checkers for supplying food, and everybody who assisted with accommodation and other practical assistance.
