Valentine's Day, also called Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is an annual holiday celebrated on February 14. It originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honoring one or more early saints named Valentinus, and is recognized as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world, although it is not a public holiday in any country.

Several martyrdom stories associated with the various Valentines that were connected to February 14 were added to later martyrologies, including a popular hagiographical account of Saint Valentine of Rome which indicated he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire. According to legend, during his imprisonment, Saint Valentine healed the daughter of his jailer, Asterius, and before his execution, he wrote her a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell.

The day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18thcentury England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines")

CLICK HERE FOR HAPPINESS Tel 028 313 0359, 4 Broad Str Hermanus

I

’m doing research for my February article. It’s the month of love and I want to inspire with some inspirational quotes about Positive Thinking. Not just for the readers, but for myself as well. The whole World can do with a truckload of Positive Thinking. Not to mention that 4-letter word. LOVE. As I scroll from ‘10 ways to change your life from Negative to Positive’ to ‘End your toxic relationship’, I come across these four words. Click here for Happiness. Seriously? Is it that easy? Just click and be happy? Mmmmm. The sceptic within me raises its head. What are they selling? If I click on it, will I be tracked? Hounded by… I don’t know… people who sell happy pills, or books about happiness… Happiness seminars… Oh just click on it Helene and get it over with… And I do. Because like most living creatures I too aspire to be happy. And I’m curious of course. And lo and behold… ‘Ten skills you will need to live a happy life’. And you have to send them your email address and there’s a an audio book available… And a video and all kinds of tools that are priced in dollars. Guess I won’t be buying happiness online. Not today anyway. But it has given me food for thought. Am I happy? Truly happy? What makes me happy? Ask yourself that question. Not so easy to come up with an immediate answer, is it? I can tell you what DOESN’T make me happy. And I suspect we’re probably more or less on the same page when it comes to the Unhappiness list. Let me think. Let me make my own (free) Happiness list. 1 Happiness is my huge ginger cat sitting on my lap, purring like a tractor as he digs his claws into my thighs. 2 Happiness is a good friend calling unexpectedly and us chatting for two hours until my phone is literally sweaty.

My ear red and numb. 3 Happiness is the look on a customer’s face when I reply that yes indeed, Percy’s carrot cake has not been sold out. Yet. 4 Happiness is watching people browsing through Amulet and raving about my place. 5 Happiness is sourcing beautiful, unique products for the Pretty shop. 6 Happiness is Amulet. Period. Aaaah…. I remember now. I’d become so anxious with all the negativity around me that I’d forgotten where I’m at my happiest. The joy when I unlock the shop in the morning. The smell of our coffee. The music that lifts my spirit. The fabulous friends that I’ve made over the years. Not just customers. But the amazing artists and suppliers that create incredible products for me. Against all odds. In spite of China. Creativity and being surrounded by beauty – that’s what makes me happy. Which is why we moved here in the first place. Which is why I bought Amulet on a whim in 2010. Which is why I’m still here. Cause I love pretty. And I struggle with Ugly. Oh and if you can’t drop in for a cappuccino and cheese cake and free music and inspiration…. My brand of Happiness is now available online. www.amuletlifestyle.com Happiness is an inside job. Awesomeness is an Amulet job. Thank you for reading this. Writing this article has already made me feel… dare I say it? Happier? Hope it did the same for you.

The Humble Sock!

Imagine going to school without socks or going to bed with cold feet…trying to keep warm, but your feet are frozen all day and all night.

We all have loads of single socks lying around at home. Odd Socks will take them off your ‘hands’ and pair them up for charity! We’re collecting clean single socks (and pairs) to donate to those less fortunate who don’t have anything to keep their feet warm this winter. It’s been 5 years since we last collected socks to warm a couple of cold toes in Cape Town and now it’s time to start this drive up again and see if we can make the winter a little shorter and more comfortable for a few people. Last year we’ve decided to focus on the Onrus/ Hermanus area with the help of a few generous friends, and I cannot wait to see the outcome.

Collection will be up to end April 2019. We are hoping to distribute the socks in May or June. I’m sure you’ve got a few single socks at home, that missed the trip to sock island. Old, new, plain, stripy, spotty or patterned or even perfectly matched pairs, Odd Socks wants your Odd Socks! We are collecting all shapes and sizes for the next 2-3 months so that we can distribute these as soon as possible. How does it work? All you need to do is collect your single/odd socks and send us a message and we will try to arrange collection. You are also more than welcome to drop your socks at our friends at Whale Coast FM as well as the Splash! Magazine office.

Odd Socks came about one day whilst driving home from the airport and being cold all day from not wearing socks. An advertisement for a charity collecting blankets came on the radio and so the idea of Odd Socks was born. Deciding to go big with the idea, we immediately spread the word via Facebook and Twitter to get the ball rolling. The response was incredible!

Taken for granted, often missing its partner or forgotten on Sock Island!

Look for the sock logo next to advertisers in upcoming issues of SPLASH Magazine, and listen to Whale Coast FM. Businesses mentioned will be dedicated drop off points for Odd Socks.

Spread the word, empty your drawers and keep an eye on Facebook, Splash magazine and tune in to Whale Coast FM

Uit die pen van To celebrate or not to ... It’s the month of love! Hearts and roses, poems and red ribbons, even a non-romantic like myself is affected by the sentiment of this month and Valentine’s Day. I always thought of the month as a big money-making scheme. You should treasure your loved ones, every day, not just some days or some months. Why wait for a specific day? I have to admit that over the last two years or so, my opinion did somewhat change about the celebration of Valentine’s Day. Perhaps it has something to do with the many birthdays that I have behind me, or the wisdom that comes with it. It does bring some sort of peace and acceptance. Maybe I’m just taking a look at life with new, grownup eyes and seeing things in a different light.

were put on this earth to be optimistic and celebrate and living life. Responsibly so, I must add! I’m all for the feel-good things in life, things that uplift and inspire. Celebrating and honouring a special person and day, giving, that’s the things that makes me feel good. I had to get a few opinions about these days and people’s feelings around them. Essie, 21 and single, had this to say: “I do celebrate some of them, not Valentine’s day though.” Tanya, 30-something, married 6 months nodded a definite ‘Yes” when asked about Valentine’s Day.

The thought of Valentine’s Day reminded me of all the other days we celebrate. Bosses Day, Secretary’s Day, Casual Day … They can all be seen as unnecessary and costly, but I think their true meaning is being misunderstood and maybe even over-thought. Why not just go with the flow and enjoy it for what it is? Fun days, days to spend a little more time thinking about their reason and our place in them. We celebrate birthdays … why not the other special days as well?

Marciel Hopkins (model and body-positive activist) sees it as reminders to celebrate people and events in life: “… like love, or your mother or father. We forget to celebrate and appreciate them.” Marciel feels that the thought and the original idea behind it is something worth celebrating. “I do feel that the retailers do go overboard with these days, specially Valentine’s Day.” I agree with her when she says that, like, Christmas, Easter, etc, it is a celebration of something specific and should be treated as such. “We should look further than the gifts aspect of these days and put more into the thought.”

Let’s think beyond the commercialisation of these days and more about the symbolisation. We go through so much, are faced with political, economic and social turmoil every day. With so much negativity and fear around us - why not celebrate the good more often? Make use of the occasions and let’s be bold and unashamedly plan those picnics and romantic dinners for our loved ones on Valentine’s Day. Splash on Mom and buy her flowers on Mother’s Day. Be the apple of Dad’s eye and spoil him with biltong on Father’s Day. Celebrate Heritage Day and braai in true South-African style. We

I know Leoné (Net nog ’n moerige Mamma-blogger), as someone that gives her honest opinion, no matter what. She does celebrate Mother’s - and Father’s Day, something she grew up with and it is a family tradition. Leoné sees it as a memory of her childhood; a time where the whole family would meet for lunch at Ouma and Oupa, almost like Christmas. Her response about Valentine’s Day is different. “No way I celebrate Valentine’s Day, it’s too close to my birthday and I have never in

SPLASH 6

my life gotten any gifts for Valentine’s Day. It is not something of importance to me.” Nikki, mother of a 17-year old young man and married for well over 20 years does not see the importance of celebrating these days. “You should show your loved ones throughout the year that you appreciate them.” Nikki’s husband feels different and never fails in spoiling her with flowers and gifts on these days. Surene, fellow blogger and mother of 17year old, Sean, says: “When I was younger these special days was important to me. Nowadays, I forget birthdays! Although, I try to teach my son that these special days are important to girls. His comeback is not having a girlfriend!” Celebrator on non-celebrator, there is probably no wrong or right and we can all just agree to disagree on this.

Elton John S

ir Elton Hercules John was born on 25 March 1947 as Reginald Kenneth Dwight. He started working as a singer, pianist and composer in 1967 with lyricist Bernie Taupin as his songwriting partner. Together they collaborated on more than 30 albums. Elton has sold more than 300 million records making him one of the best-selling music artists in the world. He has more than fifty Top 40 hits, including seven consecutive number one albums in the U.S., 58 Billboard Top 40 singles, 27 Top 10, four which reached number two and nine which reached number one. In 1967, Dwight answered an advertisement in the British magazine New Musical Express placed by Ray Williams, then the A&R manager for Liberty Records. At their first meeting, Williams gave Dwight an unopened envelope of lyrics written by Bernie Taupin, who had answered the same ad. Dwight wrote music for the lyrics, and then posted it to Taupin, beginning a partnership that still continues. When the two first met in 1967, they recorded what would become the first Elton John/Bernie Taupin song: "Scarecrow". Six months later Dwight was going by the name "Elton John" in homage to two members of Bluesology: saxophonist Elton Dean and vocalist Long John Baldry. His name was legally changed to Elton Hercules John on 7 January 1972. Elton se heel eerste treffer ‘Your Song’ komponeer hy op ‘n klavier vervaardig in 1910. He won a piano scholarship when he was 11 to the Royal Academy of Music. He has played piano on records by many different artists including T. Rex, George Harrison, John Lennon, Rod Stewart, Jackson Browne, Ringo Starr, The Hollies, Bob Dylan and even Bon Jovi. As a child, John didn’t need glasses but wore it anyway just to look like Buddy Holly. It damaged his eyes so much that he soon had to start wearing glasses. He was well known in the mid 1970’s for his outrageous clothing and his lavish eyeglasses in his live sets. During that time, he had a $40,000 collection of clothes. Elton is no stranger to the film industry. He stars as actor in thirteen movies of which his role as the Pinball Wizard in the 1975 movie Tommy was his best.

What is the best way to conduct a business? Pam Snyman

In a well-run business each participant is a leader in his/her own right who needs to make effective decisions on a daily basis when dealing with coworkers and clients. Wise decisions require thought and integrity to ensure fair and equitable outcomes. As soon as people are required to make decisions based on a set of rules, the trouble starts. This I have learnt after operating for 27 years in a corporate real estate environment. Imposing the same rules in different situations is not always fair in all circumstances and inevitably leads to conflict. What is the answer?

What is the alternative? Let’s find out... First, let us have a good look at Rules vs Principles and why basing decisions on the principle in each case is so much more effective than basing decisions on rule enforcement. There are many good reasons why imposing rules in a business is not a good idea, but there are even more compelling reasons to base business decisions on principles! RULES VS PRINCIPLES When searching for synonyms for ‘rule’ and ‘principle’ I came across the following: ‘Rule’ = law or regime (law = command, order, dictate) (regime = authority, control) ‘Principle’ = source or code or value (source = reference, origin, root) (code = conventions that govern activity in a particular sphere) (value = worth, ethic, moral, significance) The above already clearly illustrates why I favour principles as opposed to rules in a business context.

respond to clients’ queries timeously etc etc. We know very well what can go wrong in a working environment and probably will without rules…” The other side of the coin is to discuss and come to agreement on the principles that we run our business on so that we all believe in what is right and participate willingly because everyone has a clear understanding of what is necessary for our business to perform at its best.

2. Rules can be relaxed, bent, changed and can be broken whereas principles stand firm and can mend what is broken

ethics and represent fundamental truths. They are based on true moral values integrity; in other words, no person can make them up or adapt them. They represent virtue and righteousness that lead to stability and bring about creative solutions to questions that may arise within the business context. Here are some more thoughts to ponder… 3. Rules create boundaries that restrict and can be purposely circumvented. Principles liberate, creating space and fill the whole space without leaving room for circumvention 4. Rules can be misunderstood or misinterpreted. Principles don't allow for misses

Here are just two good reasons why principled decisions are superior to those made by following the rules:

The fact that rules are enforced by the business manager, means that the human element can cause all sorts of problems when it comes to enforcing these rules that are stuck up on the notice board.

5. Rules need to be applied and enforced. Principles bring about spontaneous results and are lived

1. Rules are instructions to be followed, implying an obligation to blind obedience. Principles always lead the way and imply belief in what is right bringing about willing participation through implicit understanding

People are not always consistent. They may be having a bad day… or a very good one…so when a favourite employee needs the rules to be relaxed ‘slightly’ in order for her or him to finalise a nice big transaction… the rules are bent and let’s hope that nobody else notices. When one of the other employees realises that an exception has been made for the ‘favourite’; company politics take over and jealousy and envy now dictate the rest of the ‘team’s’ behaviour and conduct towards the manager and the favourite. The transaction may very well be successful, but the relationships in the office are in tatters.

7. Rules bring about quick fixes. Principles create lasting solutions

When laying down rules that employees need to follow, they are obviously expected to obey, otherwise why are the rules there in the first place? Employees who are under the constant regime of rules are always stressed in the event that they break the rules and then expect to be chastised for not following the rules and being ‘one of the team’. “Disobedience means you are not one of us!” Nobody is interested to hear whether you actually agree with those rules, after all you agreed to comply when you signed your employee agreement…therefore the references to ‘law’ and ‘regime’ as synonyms of ‘rules’. Now some of you may be thinking, “…of course employees need to follow our rules, we don’t want chaos and mayhem to reign in our business! If each one of them just does what they like, my business cannot function effectively and efficiently. They will come to work late, drink tea at all times of the day, steal each other’s clients, not SPLASH 12

This is not the way to run a successful business. It sometimes even happens that the rules are physically changed to suit the occasion. It suddenly becomes time for the office rules to be reviewed and adapted so that one or some of the employees or their clients can benefit from the new rules. Sounds familiar? No doubt! This leads to unhappiness, conflict and instability within the business environment. When principles are sustained, this can never happen. A principle cannot be relaxed, bent or changed. Principles are the source of

6. Rules frustrate. Principles facilitate 8. Rules are authoritative statements. Principles stem from democratic thinking 9. Rules are inflexible. Principles invite thought 10. Rules cannot prescribe competency and honesty. Principles are rooted in ability and integrity This is how we at REDZetc run our business.

SA Space Agency selected as regional space weather centre for the aviation sector The South African National Space Agency (SANSA) has been selected by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) as one of two regional centres to provide space weather services, including solar storm forecasts and warnings, to the global aviation sector. “South Africa's designation as a regional space weather information provider will grow the science, engineering, technology and innovation sector, offering opportunities to develop scarce skills and increase national research output, while ensuring that usable products and services are generated for the safety of the nation,” said Minister of Science and Technology, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane. Space weather describes events that happen in space, which can disrupt modern technologies such as satellites, GPS, power grids, navigation and communication systems. Owing to the increased interconnectedness and interdependence of technological systems in the world today - which will expand as the Fourth Industrial Revolution gathers momentum - space weather events can have a negative impact on multiple systems. These can lead to serious operational failures in the communication, navigation, energy and aviation sectors, among others, with potentially disastrous effects. “With aviation, we consider four key risk areas – communication, navigation, avionics and radiation exposure,” said SANSA MD, Dr Lee-Anne McKinnell. “High frequency radio communication, as well as ground and air-based navigation systems, can be affected or knocked out entirely by space weather storms. Delicate electronics can also be damaged, and radiation exposure poses a hazard for crew and passengers especially for long haul flights.” The impact doesn’t end there as space weather can have a major knock-on effect on airline companies and airports. ICAO has recognised the need for the adoption of procedures related to mitigating space weather impacts for flight safety. ICAO recommended that all aviation providers and users become familiar with the impacts of space weather on the aviation sector and requested that pertinent space weather information be filed with all flight plans in the near future. "The international community has supported South Africa's ICAO designation, and has demonstrated confidence in SANSA's ability to provide the services required. The process that SANSA underwent to achieve this

designation has already enhanced South Africa's reputation in the space science and technology field," said Minister Kubayi-Ngubane. SANSA, an entity of the Department of Science and Technology, underwent an extensive assessment to earn the accreditation to become one of two ICAO-designated regional space weather centres. The final selection process took place at a recent ICAO Council meeting where the decision was taken to appoint 3 global centres and 2 regional centres. The global centres (USA, PanEuropean Consortium PECASUS, and the Australia, Canada, France and Japan Consortium) have begun to deliver on the requirements, while the regional centres (South Africa and a joint centre by Russia and China) will have until 2022 to build the necessary capability to provide the required services. SANSA will partner with one of ICAO's three global space weather centres, PECASUS, the Pan-European Consortium for Aviation Space Weather User Services, to provide ICAO with space weather information for the African region. PECASUS is a consortium of nine European countries, and partnering with it will provide South Africa with better access to international models and expertise.

private) are required to comply with the ICAO amendments, and having access to information and expertise locally will ensure South Africa is able to meet the requirements. While South Africa is the only African country with operational space weather capabilities, SANSA with the support of the DST, will engage with other African countries on data sharing, infrastructure hosting, training, product development, and research collaboration opportunities. Background info: SANSA is host to the only Space Weather Regional Warning Centre for Africa which operates as part of the International Space Environment Service. Utilising data from NASA and ESA space weather satellites and SANSA’s ground based instruments located across Southern Africa, the Space Weather Centre conducts realtime monitoring and forecasting of space weather and provides a range of services to national power facilities, the Defence

Force and other clients. These services include: • T-Index predictions: the ionospheric index that indicates the highest frequencies that will be reflected, a critical input for HF propagation software and communications planning. • Solar activity and geomagnetic activity indices for frequency prediction • Daily and weekly HF prediction graphs for different signal paths, special frequency prediction and plots of signal-to-noise ratios, take-off angles and maximum useable frequencies versus time. • Daily space weather bulletins. • Space weather warnings and alerts. The Space Weather Centre also presents training courses addressing the impact of space weather on HF communications and trains users on how to generate frequency predictions themselves. The Space Agency has been developing space weather services over the past nine years, and currently operates a space weather centre at the facility in Hermanus. This centre was recently upgraded and unveiled by the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology, Mrs Mmamoloko KubayiNgubane. “SANSA’s monitoring of the sun and its activity has been providing the country with vital early warnings and forecasts on space weather conditions, and these benefits will now be extended to the international aviation community,” said Minister Kubayi-Ngubane.

Over the next few years SANSA will be working closely with the Air Traffic Navigation Service (ATNS), the South African Weather Service (SAWS), and the Civil Aviation Authority and other applicable aviation partners to investigate the implications of the ICAO recommendation to the African aviation sector. “We need to ensure the aviation industry understands the risks related to space weather, what to look out for and what to expect. SANSA will provide the necessary information to enable key decision makers to make informed decisions,” says Dr McKinnell. The aviation sector (both commercial and SPLASH 13

Die Wêreldbeker-jaar is hier! Dawie Snyman

Lekker Rugby kyk vanjaar!
