S
tudying the underwater realm has always been difficult, largely due to the costs involved and the limited time one is able to spend underwater. However, recent advances in technology have allowed marine biologists to get creative in the way they can study life under the sea. One method which is becoming more widespread is the use of Baited Remote Underwater Videos (BRUVs). The BRUV rig is made up of a metal frame, whereby a container with bait (sardine) is tied to the frame at one end, and a GoPro camera is fastened to the other end of the frame in such a way that it films the bait container. The rig is deployed and left in the water for an hour before it is retrieved. The video footage is then downloaded and analysed to see what types of species are found in that particular area. Other underwater monitoring techniques are either costly (e.g. research vessels), destructive (e.g. trawling with nets) or time-limited (e.g. scuba diving). The great thing about BRUVs is that they can be deployed anywhere, at any depth (depending on the quality of your camera’s underwater housing), they are relatively cheap in the long term and they are non-invasive (not harmful to the animals that are being studied). BRUVs have revolutionised the way we can study underwater habitats and have been identified as a powerful long-term monitoring tool for underwater habitats–both marine and freshwater.

The aim of the BRUV project run by the South African Shark Conservancy (SASC) is to assess the diversity and abundance of species living in Walker Bay, and to identify which habitat types are critical for these different species. Using this information we can monitor the health of the different underwater habitats and, should any concerns arise, make appropriate recommendations to the management authorities associated with Walker Bay.

k dag nog altyd ek is een van daai wyse vrouens met al die antwoorde… Vandat ek mos die half eeu geslaan het weet ek als. Nes destyds toe ek 21 was. Jong ek kan vir jou lekker preek dat as jy negatiewe energie die wêreld instuur, gaan jy dit dubbeld en dwars terugkry… met rente en puisies en gestresde skouerspiere en geknersde tand. En hier sit ek nou, my kop spin nog, my skouer is so seer ek kan nie beweeg nie en is dit wragtig ‘n blinde puisie wat so klop op my ken? Die lewe… nes die donkie, is ‘n wonderlike ding. Met ‘n siek sin vir humor en ‘n lat vir jou gat as jy te rammetjie uitnek raak. Verlede jaar slaan ek toe mos die job van ‘n leeftyd los. Permanente inkomste, corner office met ‘n uitsig, ondergrondse parkering met my naam op die muur... Spesiale access tag net vir die binnekring bedoel… Die main konyn. Ek het al voorheen ‘n soortgelyke werk gehad. Ek het drie jaar uitgehou… ‘n Nervous breakdown gehad, ‘n vet bankbalans (wat ek als aan Jan Taks moes oorbetaal) en ek sien nou nog dieselfde terapeut wat my destyds van ‘n gewisse hartaanval gered het. Daai tyd al het ek en manlief besluit… Nee wat, die lewe is te kort vir angsaanvalle. Ons het die JHB huis in die mark gesit, die pad Hermanus toe gevat, ‘n winkel gekoop… dit alles weet julle teen die tyd. En ek hou aan vir almal vertel in watse paradys ons bly en hoe dankbaar ons moet wees en geld is nie alles nie… En daar gaan val ek pens en pootjies vir Mammon en ek vat die pad terug Egoli toe en ek en Percy sien net Potte vol geld (nie ‘n reënboog in sig nie…) en oorsese trips en ‘n goeie universiteitsopleiding vir ons dogter….
Dit het presies 7 maande gevat toe sien ek my gat. Nee, Tannie ek praat nie lelik nie. Die spreekwoordelike gat wat ‘n mens sien is glo jou graf… ja daai gat, nie jou agterstewe nie, so ek mag dit maar skryf… En al mag ek nie, sou ek anyway… Want dis mos maar hoe ek is… halsstarrig. Soos daai wonderlike donkie… Ek kan anyway nie meer my agterstewe sien nie want ek het so maer daar in die Goudstad geword van die harde werk, adrenalien, vrees, spanning en onaangenaamheid dat ek soos ‘n uitgedroogte biltong lyk… Wel, meer soos ‘n peer op stokkies. Brandy beentjies noem hulle dit in Gauteng. Dis maar die Truters se vorm. Ek sou nogal nie omgee vir ‘n ou rondinkie hier agterlangs nie. Ja, ja, g’n vrou is mos ooit tevrede met hoe sy lyk nie. Moenie worry nie, met manlief se lekker kos rol die Peer teen die tyd wat jy hierdie lees. So ja, liewe Overburgers… Antie Poppie is terug. In al haar glorie. Maar dit was darem nie alles sleg daarbo in Jozi nie. Ek het my ou vriend Worsie aka Willie Esterhuizen raakgeloop en ons het in ‘n fliek saamgespeel. ‘Paw Paw vir my darling’ is die prent se naam. Nie ek of Willie is die Paw Paw of die Darling nie. Maar ons is basies onherkenbaar. Ek sal julle nader aan die tyd weer herinner. Vir ‘n paar maande sal die stories wat ek vir Binnelanders uitgedink het nog op die lug wees. Hopelik kan julle die verskil sien. Party mense hou van die verandering… Die ander spul kla… En dis ook oukei… Ek het intussen weer daai kosbare les geleer dat dit onmoontlik is om almal tevrede te stel. Solank jy weet jy het jou beste gelewer… En as dit nie meer vir jou lekker is nie, dan beweeg jy aan. Een van die vele lesse wat ek weer in my kortstondige ballingskap onthou het. En dis die dat ek weer terug is by my geliefde Amulet… Ek het my Hartsplek verskriklik gemis, amper net so baie soos vir my dierbare man wat aand na aand na
my klaagliedere oor die foon moes luister. My dogter het my asem weggeslaan toe sy sê sy sal eerder tyd saam met haar ma kies bo enige salaris, maar nie saak hoe baie die geld is nie. Nou ja, as jy nie die eerste keer die boodskap gekry het nie, suster, dan kry jy dit hopelik die tweede keer. Ek sien verskriklik uit na 2015…. Om nie te praat van die rugby wêreldbeker nie. Miskien kry ek dit nog reg om Percy te oorreed om in September die land vir ‘n wyle te verlaat. My man reken mos hy hoef nie oorsee te gaan nie, hy het Discovery Channel. En kyk, ons het deesdae so ‘n groot TV jy moet ‘n 3 maande kursus voltooi om die remote te verstaan. Dis te lekker vir Pappa om in charge te wees. Ek sweer hy het aspris die ingewikkeldste toestel op die mark gekies sodat hy nie finale sê kan hê oor ons kykgenot. En die genot se volume. Wat nogal pynlik kan wees wanneer manlief lustig agteroor lê en slaap, remote vasgeklem in die hand. Ai ek het die snorkende liefie by die huis weer van voor af liefgekry… en net om dinge in perspektief te stel. Beriggie op Bladsy 3 in die plaaslike JHB koerant, die Northcliff en Mellville times… ‘Found in house in Westdene – Drugs and Human Ear. (Met ‘n foto van laasgenoemde in ‘n plastiese sakkie) Nie op die voorblad nie, mind you, sommer so tussen die plaaslike brokkies. Ek sal nooit weer kla oor die kleinighede in die lewe nie… Wel altans ek sal probeer. Ek is miskien effe ouer en wyser maar ek is ook maar net ‘n mens…
Mag 2015 al jou stoutste verwagtinge oortref… Mag Eskom krag kry… en dit verskaf aan die mense wat betaal… Mag die hordes telemarketers wat ons daagliks pla met onwelkome aanbiedinge jou selfoonnommer verloor… Geniet hom! Die beste lê nog voor!!!

Full Service Veterinary Hospital Here are a few helpful tips on putting together a pet emergency kit for when you travel with your pet. This will help keep your pet comfortable until you can get to a veterinarian for further care and advice. 4 STERILE SALINE WASH Sterile saline wash is useful if your pet has debris or smoke in their eyes. Apply liberally and try to flush the eyes until all debris is removed. You can also use sterile saline to flush out minor wounds. 4 WATER Water can be used to flush out minor wounds. It is useful for rehydrating a pet, soothing burns, and washing off toxins, soaking a paw, or cooling an overheated pet. Don’t forget a dish for your pet to drink from if you are away from home. 4 HYDROGEN PEROXIDE Please ask your veterinarian about using peroxide to induce vomiting. It must be used correctly, but can be helpful if your pet ingests a poisonous substance. This is important especially if it will take you awhile to drive to a veterinarian for assistance. Timing is extremely important when certain substances have been ingested. It could be a matter of life or death for your pet.

4 TOPICAL OINTMENTS Aloe Vera Gel and/or other topical antibiotic ointments are good to have on hand and apply if needed until your pet can be seen by a veterinarian. 4 BANDAGES Gauze, clean rags, even a sock can be used as bandage material to help control bleeding and keep wounds clean until they can be treated. Diapers or sanitary pads can be used to cover wounds before applying a bandage. Non-adhesive vet wrap is also great to have in a pet first aid kit, as it does not stick to animal fur and is easier to remove. Always be careful when applying bandages. More damage can occur if it is too tight. Please ask your veterinarian on advice on applying bandages. 4 TAPE Micropore tape is useful for securing dressings. Most pharmacies stock this tape, or ask your veterinarian. 4 BLANKET/TOWEL A blanket or towel can be used to help keep your pet warm and combat shock. You can use a blanket or towel to wrap your pet in on the journey to the vet, or if your pet is immobile you can use it as a stretcher to lift your pet on.
4 PLASTIC POUCHES/BAGS Used to cover foot injuries and help keep them clean, fasten with tape. This will help minimize blood spillages on to carpets, furniture and your car. 4 SCISSORS For cutting tape, gauze, splints, or fur. 4 TWEEZERS Tweezers can be useful for removing objects like thorns from a paw. Tweezers are more likely to remove the entire object, whereas fingers can break an object and leave part remaining. 4 MEDICATIONS If your pet is on regular medication, it is important to keep a small amount in the first aid box. Sugar tablets or syrup for diabetic pets or a small pet with low blood sugar. Antihistamines are good to have on hand in case of stings or other allergic conditions until treatment can be obtained. Ask your veterinarian what kind is best and what dosage your pet would need. 4 WASHING UP LIQUID Washing up liquid, is very effective in removing toxins from the skin and fur. Just remember to rinse thoroughly with water afterwards.

4 THERMOMETER The normal body temperature for a dog and cat is approximately 37.5-39°C. Take your pets temperature by inserting the thermometer rectally. Don’t forget a petroleum or water-based lubricant to make things more comfortable for them. 4 CONTACT DETAILS It is worth making a note of phone numbers for your local vets in the area you are visiting. Your veterinarian may have a recommendation, so be sure to ask before your leave on your trip. 4 MEDICAL RECORDS If your pet has had any recent treatment or illness, or is on medication, it is worth keeping a copy of their medical records. If your pet needs treatment, the veterinarian will have your pet’s full medical history and be able to provide better care knowing what diagnosis and medication your pet has received. Be sure to talk to your veterinarian about putting a kit together if you have questions. Hope everyone enjoys the holidays!

Stanford has a new feather in its cap… thanks to quirky local artist, Vivienne Mconie, art enthusiasts now have a place to wine, dine and enjoy beautiful art all under one roof. A child friendly farm with a restaurant, art gallery and upcoming country market & brewery, this place is set to become a destination of note.
I
t all started 5 years ago, during an annual holiday road trip that the artist and farmer fell in love with the Overberg. Two years later they stumbled onto the farm Elandfontein. There and then they decided that this is where they wanted to lay down their roots. Getting the farm operational, refurbishing the old farmhouse, designing and building the restaurant (which resembles a chapel) took two years of hard work. They are currently adding a picnic area and playground, with even more things planned for the future.
They also make their own preserves and brew their own mead, which can be tried in their tasting room. Sitting on the veranda after a splendid meal, looking out over the dam and listening to the numerous birds, a light breeze wafting through the pine trees, I had only one wish left – oh for a hammock under the shady trees, in which I could lay down my head and rest my full belly.
A dream setting for photographers, a gorgeous wedding venue and ideal location for functions and teambuilding events. Four weeks ago they opened their doors to the public, and already they are receiving many visitors. The restaurant serves country cuisine as well as Mediterranean style dishes. On Sundays they have a Country Table with a variety of traditional fare to choose from. Popular menu items include homemade pies and burgers, traditional beef curry, lamb bredie and carrot cake. As a huge fan of lasagna, I was pleasantly surprised when I tried the chicken lasagna (their own recipe) – it has a unique flavor and taste better than any chicken lasagna that I have ever tried before. Their zesty chicken summer salads, with daring combinations of fruits and vegetables and a basil pesto mayo, are out of this world and should be on every restaurant menu during summertime. The homemade burger topped with fried onion is a must try. The burger patty was tasteful and full of flavour. For those with a serious sweet tooth, I would recommend the Bar-one milkshake… after trying one of these, plain old chocolate milkshake will never hit that spot again.
Stanford Harvest @ Elandsvalley Farm. The concept began the day we bought the farm. I knew that I wanted a Gallery with a difference. It had to be a place where people could come and relax, bring the kids and the Grandparents and enjoy good food, A relaxed atmosphere and a stunning view of the Elandskloof Mountains. We had a lot of fun sourcing all the old windows and doors and worked with some talented craftsmen too. The challenge was to create a building that looks like it has been here for a long time, one with warmth and atmosphere. It was very exciting to see it develop and we are really happy with the results. Our intention is to provide a really interesting venue. I am very passionate about food and love cooking for the guests. Food is like Art really, the two go hand in hand.

TRADITIONAL ITALIAN GELATO MAKERS IN STANFORD
METHOD Heat the butter and the olive oil in a potjie. Fry the onions together with the peppercorns until light golden, and add the mustard seeds and bay leaves. Fry for a few seconds and add the olives, salami and garlic. When the salami starts to colour, add the calamari heads and rings together with the chicken fillets. When the calamari starts to take shape and colour slightly, add the paprika, sprinkle the saffron into the potjie, and remove potjie from the heat. Pack the prawns onto the calamari and chicken, and add the line fish cubes over that. Return the potjie to the heat. Add the rice, Napolitano sauce and the lemon juice. Add the mussels and sherry, and simmer covered for a few minutes. Open the lid and add the vegetable stock – be careful about the salt content of commercial stock). Also add half of the fresh thyme and season to taste. to SERVE Allow the paella to simmer for about 5 minutes. Stir carefully not to break the ingredients. CHEF’S WInE Remove the lid and allow sauce to thicken up. RECoMMEnDAtIon Once the sauce has thickened, add the rest of the fresh thyme.
Pure and natural ingredients only. Milk, eggs and fresh ingredients from the Overberg. No Preservatives, colors, thickeners or chemicals. Homemade Italian pastries. Don Gelato’s blend of Italian coffee, and fresh juices and smoothies.
Serve the paella in the potjie or a big frying pan.
For the Napolitano sauce Serve with a bordeaux blend or pinot noir, slightly chilled.

Often my head chef, Johanna Maluleke, and I get together in a relaxed environment and work on new recipes for the restaurant. Luckily, at my house I have my own red devil Falcon who is always hungry. Manchester United forever!

METHOD Add olive oil to a hot pot and sauté onions and black pepper. As onions start to turn al dente, add the bay leaves and garlic. As onions start to brown, add the liquidised tomatoes and stir. Add hot water and bring to the boil, stirring at regular intervals to make sure tomatoes do not stick to the bottom of the pot. Boil for one hour on a medium heat, until oil settles on top of the sauce. Remove the sauce from heat.

T
he Hermanus Waldorf School is part of the International Waldorf movement, with schools in countries all over the world. The school is situated in Sandbaai, close to the communities of Zwelihle and Mount Pleasant.Hermanus Waldorf has a food garden and soup is made for the children regularly. A new addition to the school is their bus, which is used to transport pre-school children to and from school, and take children on cultural and educational outings, as well as to sporting events. There is an aftercare facility and an extra-mural programme, which includes soccer, netball, cycling and chess.
Art forms a part of the teaching and learning. Children who are less able to express themselves in writing or verbally, have the opportunity to balance this by creating rich illustrations. The aim of the teaching is to create an artistic lesson, thus art is intrinsic to every part of a lesson. In addition, painting, drawing, crafts, music and handwork all form part of the weekly timetable. This develops skills in technology as well as art.
A unique feature is that the teacher, if possible, remains with the class from Grade 1 – 7. This enables the teacher to form a strong relationship with the child and the group and to gain an intimate understanding of the learning progress of each child. In essence the class becomes a community which provides stability and security for the child
Life sciences and social sciences are taught in an enlivening way, with dramatic performances, recitation, group presentation and written accounts of historic events. These are created by the children themselves. Focal events in the senior primary are interschool gatherings in the form of a Greek Olympics to coincide with ancient history and a Medieval Fair to coincide with medieval history
The focus is on developing literacy and numeracy skills through regular practise throughout the primary school. The method of instruction is experience orientated and works to create a balance between thinking, feeling and doing. The language of instruction is English and the aim is for the children to achieve fluency in this language by the end of Grade 7. The school participates in the state ANA tests as well as a system evaluation of literacy and numeracy carried out nationally by the Federation of Waldorf Schools
The ethos of the school includes environmental responsibility. Recent developments at the school include the installation of a biodigester, which uses black water from the toilets as well as food scraps. These are converted into biogas, which will be used to cook food for the children. Also part of the greening programme, is the planned installation of wind turbines and solar panels, all contributing to reducing the school’s carbon footprint.

birthday party and charity art auction
O
n Friday the 28th of November Splash Media celebrated their first birthday under the new ownership of Peter & Wouter van Schaik. They decided to make the NSRI Hermanus the benificiary’s of this years auction. Guests were welcomed at The Classroom with a glass of Sparkling Cocktail and encouraged to look through all the items on auction. Later we were treated to a three cource meal prepared by Chef Kevin Warwick and his team, accompanied by excellent wines like Bartons, DuVon, Benguela Cove and Birkenhead. On the table were goody bags for every guest filled with nice vouchers and snacks. The aim of the dinner was to celebrate with old and new friends, but the main reason was also to celebrate the local artists and to raise funds for the NSRI. For that reason we auctioned pieces
of art which was kindly donated by different artists form the Overberg. “We are excited about another 12 issues of Splash in 2015, and we already have some new ideas for the new year” says Peter. We had a different artist on the cover each month and we are trying to give all artists in the Overberg the exposure they deserve. Buitehorkies gebruik as deure en skarniere word handvatsels
D
ie kere wanneer ek in ‘n nuwe huis ingetrek het, het ek eerste die kombuis uitgepak en mooi gemaak, om praktiese redes en my koffie verslawing maar dit is waar “huismaak” vir my begin. As al my potjies, blikke en versamel goed eers ‘n nuwe staanplek gekry het, volg die res van die huis met gemak. Dis ook waar ek begin “spring clean” en herstilleer wanneer n nuwe seisoen begin of n nuwe gier my pak. Dit is in my kombuis waar my kreatiwiteit begin vloei, waar ek my “skilderye” maak met keramiek en breekgoed. Waar ek die nuwe jaar begin met nuwe uitdagings, om die koffiepot waar ek die meeste na my seuns verlang en nuwe en ou vriende verwelkom. My kombuis laat my ryk voel, dit is waarom ek die woorde van Thomas Jefferson so goed verstaan, geen beter plek om dit te ervaar, as in my kombuis nie. “That which we surround ourselves with, becomes the museum of our soul and the archive of our experiences” As ek ‘n nuwe kliënt se huis moet versier dan gaan maak ek vinnig ‘n draai in die kombuis, waar die vrou se geheime versteek is. Haar aanvoelings en unieke styl lê tussen elke dag se gebruik goed. As ek haar kombuis sien, weet ek waarvan sy gaan hou en maak dit my werk maklik. Nou dat ek daaraan dink, daar is baie van my vriendinne se karakters vasgelê in hulle kombuise, en dit is hier waar elkeen hul eie klein museum bou en uitstalings hou van wat hulle na aan die hart lê.
Martie se versameling erdeware, Katinka se popspeel kombuis en haar blou borde, Jenny se deurmekaar glase, Irma se rakke vol uitstal goed en Wilna se persiese matte met haar hoender kinders, Caramel en Fudge wat weier om enige ander plek te lê as op die persiese mat waar die sonnetjie vroeg oggend deur die agterdeur sluip. Die Eatery se nuwe deli, voel en lyk soos ‘n plaas kombuis. Ek is elke keer tuis as ek daar instap en onmiddelik honger oor die wonderlike geure van allerlei gebak. Ek verwonder my natuurlik aan die botteltjies ingemaakte produkte en storm dadelik na die mandjie varsgebakte oondbrood, wat onmoontlik is om te weerstaan. Laat ek vertel hoe ek kombuis maak: Ek het ‘n kleintjie dood aan ‘n ingeboude kombuis en spandeer veel eerder die geld aan mooi kaste wat later weer in ‘n ander vertrek staan gemaak kan word. Om die regte meubelment te vind wat prakties gebruik kan word in die kombuis is sigself ‘n groot uitdaging en lekkerte. Gelukkig het die oumense dieselfde idee gehad as ek en is antieke koskaste taamlik beskikbaar. Die soektog na die regte rakkies om die uitstalling mooi te laat lyk, is kreatief. Ek het deur die jare ‘n goeie versameling bymekaar gemaak om in enige ruimte te kan inpas. Die kosbaarste vir my, is my rooi biltong gaaskassie, wat nou diens doen as groente en vrugte rak. Ek skuif sommer twee klein tafels teen mekaar om een groot eetplek te maak en soms word een van die tafels weer tuin toe gedra, om daar te eet in die somer aande.
Stoele wat nie maats is nie word om die tafels geplaas soos die gaste vermeerder. ‘n Groot riempiesbank met baie kussings is ‘n staatmaker langs die een kant van die tafel, baie gemaklik vir lank kuier. My werkoppervlak by die stoof is ‘n ou werkbank wat ek ‘n marmer blad laat opsit het. Ek gebruik ou blikke vir messehouers, in die plek van laaie. My kombuis is oorlaai met skilderye en ek skep my eie kunsuitalling . Selfs die venster ruimte word vir rakke gebruik. Jenny het buitehorkies gebruik, as deure om die gewone kombuis toebehore weg te steek. Die skarniere van die horkies het deurhandvatsels geword. Die Eatery het n ou houtleer gebruik om ‘n wonderlike rak te maak, Katinka se eettafel is werkoppevlakte ook.

Onpas meubels het soveel meer karakter as ingeboude stukke. Die informele aanslag vereis meer kreatiwiteit, met hope bevrediging, deel daarvan is om altyd te snuffel vir nog iets wat kan werk in die kombuis.

Die Noord-Kaap, ’n pragtige stuk land met die mooiste gedigte geskryf deur die hoof kokkedoor van die Hantam “ek sing van die wind wat te keer gaan… maar nooit, nee nooit nie, van geld” Niewoudtsville, die bolle hoofstad van die wereld, vandaar die heerlike ystervark rugvel, ’n stapelvoedsel en lekkerny van die Hantam. My gereg, springbok carpaccio, en die dra vars rocket blare en parmesan soos ’n kroon op sy kop. Philip de Vos het geskryf…”moenie ’n mielie kielie nie, want ’n mielie kan nie lag nie..” Die Noordwes is ’n provinsie met heerlike malaria-vry wildreservate soos Madikwe en Pilansberg. Mielie wêreld. Ons eie “sin city”, skuus het ek dit verkeerd gespel? My keuse van gereg, ’n lekker groot biefstuk met mielies en beenmurg om daai boere perdfris en gesond te hou. Limpopo word geken deur sy ryk verskeidenheid van bome, wild en voëls. Natuurlik ook die Marula boom en vrug, die ware ambrosia vir mens, voël en dier, iets wat ook gou in lawaaiwater kan verander en dan die geraas….. Die marula pit besit ook ’n wonderlike neut wat graag by lodges oor slaaie gesprinkel word vir die Obama bewoners. My keuse van gereg, geroosterde rooibok lendeskyf met geroosterde groente en marula jelly. Die provinsie wat glo dat dit by hulle is waar die son opkom… Mpumalanga met prentjie mooi dorpies soos Dullstroom, Graskop, Sabie, Volksrus, en Hazyview. Bekende landsmerke soos “Gods window” maak dit verseker een van die mooiste provinsies. Pannekoek tradisie is hier so oud soos die kaapse wapad en ’n “brawe Harry” het hierdie tradisie voortgesit met ’n paar pannekoek winkels. My keuse van gereg, warm pannekoek met ’n romerige forel vulsel en gevlokte amandels. Kwazulu Natal herinner my aan Zulu dames se geluide van krakeel. Die reuk van mos, en ’n soort woud reuk wat hang in die lug..n soort vakansie reuk wat my nooit teleurstel nie, en die wete van vars, groot, vet mango en avokado, en as jy gelukkig is, ’n paar kousels suikerriet. Man dit proe soos vakansie!! My keuse van gereg, roerbraai calamarie met ’n mango, avokado en rissie salsa. Die Vrystaat se mooi webwerf.. en vlaktes het nie ’n krans nodig nie. Dis asof God al die oranje in die wereld soos ’n mat oor die Vrystaat gooi met sonsonder. ʼn Fynstoffie op die vlakte met die reuk van skaapkraal, en die wete van ’n soutribbetjie of boontjie bredie op die stoof. Rooi grond soek nie wingerstok nie, so ons bly by die graan drankies met ete. Man, hier smul ek lekker in my eie taal! Dan kom ek by Madibalanga, o skuus ek bedoel Oos-Kaap. Bisho, die buffel van ’n hoofstad, Grahamstad, waar mens leer artikels skryf en dan ook die motor stad, oftewel die vriendelike stad. My gereg, iets wat Madiba by die Ambasade geniet het in London, Umnqusho(stampmielies en boontjies) met geroosterde bokmelk kaas en vye. Plek van goud, jy maak my so senuweeagtig, en te moeg om kos te maak. Ek weet van ’n bakery wat baie goeie Jan Ellis poeding maak!
Lekker eet!
’n Nuwigheid vir Afrikaans in die nuwe jaar Afrikaanse poësie het in Oktober ʼn besonder vindingryke hupstoot met die bekendstelling van Filmverse, ʼn digkuns-animasieprojek wat die ATKV aangepak het in samewerking met Fopspeen Moving Pictures.
V
olgens Nita Cronjé, die uitvoerende vervaardiger en ook die ATKV se bestuurder: feeste en produksies, is die oogmerk met Filmverse om leerders ʼn nuttige hulpmiddel in die hand te gee om Afrikaanse gedigte ontsluit te kry en om tegelykertyd onderwysers se onderrigtaak te vergemaklik. Maar daarmee saam wil Filmverse ook die animasiebedryf in Suid-Afrika bevorder. Twaalf Afrikaanse gedigte, geskryf deur digters, van NP Van Wyk Louw tot Ronelda Kamfer, is gekies vir dié projek.
“Ek wou animasieprente maak in Afrikaans ten einde animasie as medium uit te lig bó die populêre opvatting dat dit maar net kindervermaak is. Ek wou poësie meer sigbaar maak en die diversiteit van die medium uitwys. Ek dink ons het dit hier reggekry.”
Die ATKV, in samewerking met Fopspeen Films, se produksie genaamd Filmverse, is ’n projek waarin ’n reeks kort animasiefilms geskep word wat geïnspireer is deur ’n seleksie van 12 Afrikaanse gedigte.
Vir elk van die 12 gedigte is ʼn animasiekunstenaar, in sommige gevalle meer as een, aangewys nadat Grobler onder meer op sosiale media animeerders genooi het om by die projek betrokke te raak. Die gedigte en animeerders is ‘Vroegherfs’ (NP Van Wyk Louw) deur Wessel en Jac Hamman; ‘Bitterbessie dagbreek’ (Ingrid Jonker) deur Roger en Dewald van der Merwe; ‘Finis’ (Lina Spies) deur Michele Nigrini; ‘Jy vra my hoe my eerste soen was’ (Danie Marais) deur katty vandenberghe, Anni Snyman en Eugenie Grobler; ‘Belydenis van ’n studentedigter’ (Loftus Marais) deur Rudolph Boonzaaier; ‘Visioen van ’n lessenaar’ (Antjie Krog) deur Sunieda Kelber en Fabian Wargau; ‘Die skedel lag al huil die gesig’ (Wilma Stockenström) deur Crowther Lindeque; ‘What abou’ de lô’ (Adam Small) deur Charles Badenhorst; ‘Last Grave at Dimbaza’ (Fanie Olivier) deur Stefanie de Beer; ‘’n Gewone blou Maandagoggend’ (Ronelda Kamfer) deur Naomi van Niekerk en Arnaud van Vliet; ‘Timotei Sjampoo’ (Gert Vlok Nel) deur Janhendrik Burger en Berdene du Toit; en ‘Ek sal sterf en na my vader gaan’ (Breyten Breytenbach) deur Diek Grobler.
Klassieke gedigte, asook die werk van kontemporêre digters, word gebruik om ’n “visuele bloemlesing” saam te stel waarin ’n dialoog tussen woord en beeld geskep word. Elke animasiefilm het ’n eie klankbaan waarop die gedig onder andere voorgelees word. Die eindproduk is ’n DVD van sowat 30 minute met die twaalf animasiefilms daarop wat as ’n afsonderlike produksie vertoon word. Dit was Diek Grobler, artistieke regisseur van die projek en een van die kreatiewe kragte agter Fopspeen Moving Pictures, se jarelange droom om sodanige forum te skep vir animasiekunstenaars om prente te maak waarin die fokus op dié kunsvorm val.
Mooiste liefdesgedig ooit Die volgende liefdesgedig van Breyten Breytenbach is onlangs in Nederland aangewys as die mooiste liefdesgedig ooit. Lees dit en verlekker jou in ons mooi taal in die hande van ’n meester.
