H

owever, even if you are not such a fabulous person, feel free to continue reading. Maybe I can change your mind. Change your mind about what, you ask? About being fabulous? Nee, skattie, about being an uber pessimist, about expecting 2016 to be even worse than 2015, about expecting that it’s just going to get hotter and hotter until we all feel (and look) like fried hake and chips… Luckily I love hake and chips because apparently hot as hell is here to stay. Don’t you ever complain about the cold and wet winter again, you hear? And here we are. We survived 2015. Net -net. Some of us may still be slightly hung-over, others may have gained a couple of kilos over the festive season… But that’s what New Year’s Resolutions are for, not so? If you’ve been following my ramblings over the past years you’ll know that I don’t partake in that senseless activity. But don’t let me stop you from coming up with a bucket list of must-dos. In fact I urge you to go for it. 2015 sucked. But humankind has been given a second chance, not because we deserve it because face it, we are a rather despicable bunch, but never mind that now. Grab the opportunity - make this year count. Let’s not dwell on the negative. Not now. Not today. Not this year. Not this lifetime. Now I've ruined many a dinner conversation. What do I expect people to talk about at the hairdresser, the local pub, after church...? What's the point if we can't complain about the economy, the crime, the electricity prices... Will the letters page in the Hermanus Times survive? What do I suggest we do instead? How about...? And these are just a few suggestions off the top of my head: Do something you've never done before. Challenge yourself. Learn a new skill. Refuse to be mediocre. Hug someone. Blow your brain with beautiful music. Watch a fabulous movie. Treat yourself and your best friend to a coffee and cake morning. Spoil yourself with that gorgeous something you've always wanted but felt too guilty to buy. (Personally I'm done with the guilt trip, aren't you? Apartheid is soo last century.) Be happy. Wow, now that's a tough one. Thought I'd just slip it in there and test your reaction. Jip. Apparently the pursuit of happiness is one of the most difficult things in life. Now there's a challenge for 2016.

Tel / Fax: 028 313 0359 4 Broad Street Hermanus, 7200

How about... you make this the year that you find something that makes you happy. You. Not your mother, your partner, your friend, your boss or the people that you feel you owe... Just you. Ask yourself. What makes me happy? And if you can't think of something, take a stroll down to the sea and just sit there and look at the ocean... chances are you're feeling better already... And if the answer doesn't come today, go back tomorrow and the day after and next week... until one day you realise: Wow, I really like these special times with myself, just looking at the sea, listening to the waves, not thinking about anything

SPLASH 4

in particular, just being... content. Is that the word? Maybe you're just plain happy, but you don't know how to recognise the feeling anymore. Because contrary to popular belief, happiness isn't expensive. You don't have to take out a loan, there are no levies, no fees and you don't have to repay any financial institution for the rest of your natural life. Sounds like a bargain to me. So why is it so hard? It took me many, many years to discover that simple elusive feeling of pure joy and happiness. I was way too busy, for starters. Too busy working and making enough money so that one day I could leave this horrible, stressed busy life behind and start a fantastic new life and be happy. But unfortunately you need money to be able to do that. Or so we believed. Eventually we moved here but I kept commuting to Johannesburg for work because you need money to pay for the house and the plane tickets and the school and food and the nanny who has to care of our daughter while I'm in JHb and we were exhausted and grumpy but we held onto the thought that one day when we have enough saved up and we don't have to pay off the bond and the car.... and all the other gadgets we've bought to make our lives easier... then we will be happy. Ya think? Happiness comes in many shapes and guises. In my case I had to pluck up the courage to give up on a regular salary. Then I came home and sat staring at the sea in total misery and panic and slowly sank into a depression because I wasn't doing something. My life had no meaning because I wasn't clocking 18 hours a day... Being a recovering workaholic, I felt incredibly guilty because I wasn't DOING anything! Guilty and happy don't belong in the same sentence. Long story short, I challenged myself, did something I'd never done before and today six years later, I'm still the proud owner of Amulet. (Wow, has it been that long?) And that is my happy place. And yes I'm busier than ever 'cause now I'm doing three different jobs at the same time, but I'm loving it. And I still feel very guilty when I just stare out at the sea marvelling at the beauty of it all, but then I reckon... What the hell, I'm happy. Never thought you'd see hell and happy in the same sentence did you? This year I want to challenge myself by taking up ceramics – I want to learn to make something even half as beautiful as the incredible ceramic pieces that I’m fortunate enough to stock in Amulet. Don’t worry, I promise not to try and sell my efforts to my unsuspecting customers. I love you guys too much. Come on, there must be something you’ve always wanted to do/learn… no one says you have to be good at it, as long as it makes you smile… Mmmm… how about belly dancing… I mean, I have the belly… See, you’re smiling already… yes okay Percy you can get off the floor and stop laughing… it’s not that funny. A Happy funny smiling rip-roaring positive, rocking, kick-ass New Year to you all! Oh yes… I nearly forgot… Go forth and be fabulous… and the world will be fabulous right back at you.

Nuwe dinge

vir die nuwe jaar

‘n Boodskap van Japie Gouws, Besturende Direkteur van die ATKV Groep

D

Rouge is trots Suid-Afrikaans.

’n Brandweerwolf. Wat het gebeur met die seesiek lemoen? Hy’t ’n naartjie geword.

Mag jou 2016 vol opwindende nuwe uitdagings wees. Mooi loop!

Amanda de Stadler (amandad@vva.atkv.org.za)

Be Calm and Play Chess.

By Kathleen Botha

A year ago the Hermanus Chess Club officially opened its doors. A year later and, wow, what a year it has been. In February we hosted the first Walker Bay Development Chess tournament in Hermanus. The age groups were divided into novice and advanced players. There were 126 eager participants from within the Overberg who took part. The event will be an annual event and is aimed at developing chess as a sport. Next year we are opening up the tournament to include the Cape Winelands, this way we are ensuring that participants get to play against players from other regions. Many of our members have given up their weekends to participate in chess tournaments. Our members achieved much successes this year. 62% earned their Overberg Colours whilst one member proudly represented South Africa at the 2015 Africa Schools Individual Championship in Gaborone where she received the coveted title Woman Candidate Master. 16 of our members have been invited to participate in the South African Junior Chess Championships which runs from 3-10 January 2016. Yes, during the school holidays; this shows their dedication, love and passion for the game. On the lighter side our club has visited the Country Market twice this year and will be doing so again next year, so if you see us there stop by to have a look or to have a game.

As Good as new….. The holiday season – packed with champagne, dessert and late nights – has left you with puffy eyes, dull skin and general dehydration. However, it’s a brand new year, making it the perfect opportunity to ditch those sunglasses and breathe new life into your skin. Revive lack-lustre, partied-out skin with a skin detox.

REPLENISH Amp up your skin’s moisture and radiance by using products containing vitamins, minerals, peptides and antioxidants. Mesotherapy introduces high concentrations of these active ingredients to replenish and renew tired, dull-looking skin. REMOVE We tend to overload our faces with make-up during the festive season and this, combined with not diligently removing it at night, can be disastrous for skin. The use of sunblock mixed with perspiration can also make your skin feel clogged. Kick-start cell turnover and unclog pores by having a quick Lunch time peel. Start work in 2016 with a brighter looking skin. Chemical peels can remove dry, dead skin cells effectively without any flaking or down time. Improving sun damage that might have taken place on the beach this festive season!

NEW YEAR NEW SKIN Every year we talk about New Year Resolutions and goals but after a few months they seem to fade. What can we do different this year to improve our life and our skin? At Refine we believe in building a world of confidence from the outside-in. When you feel good about your skin, you can focus on improving other goals in your life. REHYDRATE Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a very powerful humectant, drawing 1000 times its own weight in moisture from the surrounding environment. HA is naturally produced by our skin to help hydration, but unfortunately in smaller amounts as we grow older or with environmental damage and sun exposure. Juvederm® Hydrate allows your doctor to deliver a deeply hydrating boost of hyaluronic acid (HA) to the skin. Tiny injections of juvederm® hydrate can boost skin smoothness, brightness and hydration: to restore your skin’s healthy glow.

REST The tell-tale signs of late nights and New Year’s parties is noticeable in the eye bags and dark circles. Recharge the windows of your soul with a Carboxytherapy treatment. This will get rid of those dark circles in no time. Try adding a thin dermal filler in the tear troughs and you will look as you have just come from a 4 week holiday. Leaving your eye area rested and rejuvenated in no time! RECHARGE If you feel as if you have over indulged this festive season, thinking about going on a strict detox plan to rid your body of all the late night drinks and Christmas pudding, think again… Try the very popular Vitamin/Detox drip. Over the last few years, intravenous vitamin therapy has become increasingly common in spas, specialty clinics, doctors’ offices and, now, also available at Refine. The idea is to help otherwise healthy people recover from morning-after malaise, dehydration, stomach bugs, food poisoning and jet lag, as well as to fight aging’s effects. Let Dr. Michelle Emett help you fight the post-holiday blues with a drip and chill! REJUVENATE You have spent hours on the beach and now feel 10 years older, noticing dark patches of sun damaged skin. Let us help you to rejuvenate your skin to pre-holiday, glowy skin with a quick fix Laser treatment. Have an IPL treatment to rejuvenate and clear sun damage, improving overall texture, firmness and colour. REFORM So, you have always wanted firmer skin, and now your 2016 resolution is to get what you always wanted. Pop into refine, get your Beauty Passport for the New Year and let us help you achieve your skincare goals. By combining therapies such as the silhouette one stitch lift, dermal fillers, fractionated laser, and skin needling treatments you will be turning heads at your next Christmas table! Have your free consultation with a professional aesthetic therapist or physician today!

Effective

Breathing for It’s the start of a new year and many of you might be considering running as an effective method of getting fit & losing some unwanted fat after overindulging during the festive season. However before you hit the road please read my article on breathing as it may be of great importance to you: Breathe in, breathe out, it's that simple right? Not so fast. When it comes to exercise, the art of inhaling and exhaling may be a little more complicated than we think. Should we breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth? And wait—what’s a diaphragm exactly? Read on to discover the best breathing techniques to put optimal performance well within your reach in 2016.

Breathe Easy—Your Action Plan Whether it’s time to hit the treadmill, or squat rack, breathing isn’t the first thing that comes to mind, however smooth and efficient breathing is crucial for delivering the oxygen our bodies need to perform functions properly. Proper breathing can also help you to exercise longer with less effort. It is also said to even calm the mind. With a little extra awareness—and some practice your A game is just a few breaths away. KEEP THIS IN MIND…

Running Nailing the right running tempo, and strategy can be challenging enough, but your work doesn’t end there. Huffing and puffing on the treadmill won’t get you to the finish line. In fact, studies show that improper breathing technique can affect speed and performance. How to do it right: There’s no golden rule, but many runners find it most comfortable to take one breath for every two foot strikes, says Alison McConnell a breathing expert and author of BREATHE STRONG PERFORM BETTER. This means taking two steps (one left, one right) while breathing in

Runners

and two steps while breathing out—also known as the 2:2 rhythm. Because the diaphragm and surrounding organs are all subject to the forces of gravity, McConnell says, synchronizing the breath to running cadence will keep the organs from putting unnecessary pressure on the diaphragm, which can impede breathing (and make running more uncomfortable than it needs to be).

The nose vs. mouth debate: There have been some studies comparing nasal and oral breathing during exercise, most have used small sample sizes with somewhat inconclusive results. I prefer to breathe via the mouth during exercise, as this is the route of least resistance, I find that breathing through the nose during exercise makes it needlessly hard. On the flip side, some experts say that breathing through the nose has its own benefits, like increased CO2 saturation in the blood, which creates a more calming effect, says Roy Sugarman, Ph.D., director of applied neuroscience for Athletes Performance. Breathing in through the nose can also help warm the air entering the lungs (This may be one for cold weather workouts) and could minimize allergen intake, says professional triathlete and Iron Woman Terra Castro. Bottom line: Test the airways, and see what feels the best for you and your lungs. We have 3 highly qualified Biokineticists & 6 Personal Trainers at Proactive Fitness who can help you assess your lung function and overall physical readiness for exercise as well as give you expert guidance on training methodology when it comes to any form of exercise. ► What is Reshape? Reshape is a weight loss program that primarily focus on fat loss. By using Lipolytic in combination with a very low calorie diet you will lose up to 30% more abnormally stored fat as opposed to a reduced calorie diet on its own. ► How does it work? The combination of the medication and the specially formulated eating plan will trigger the body to tap into your abnormal fat stores as a source of energy. By tapping into your fat reserves you will release a substance called leptin that will trigger your satiety centre in your brain and give you a feeling of “fullness”. Lipolytic also increases your serotonin (happy hormone) levels thus increasing your mood. The end result being: • Weight Loss (fat loss) • increased energy levels • Decreased hunger • Increased in mood ► Can anyone do the program? Because it’s a natural product it is safe and has no side effects. However you have to see your doctor to rule out any medical cause for your weight problem. ► Stockist and treatment of

Celebrating 10 years Developing Children and Teens in Hermanus & Surrounds!

T

he Helen O’Grady Drama Academy has reached a milestone in its work with children and schools throughout the Overberg & Overstrand. It was ten years ago that Duncan Rice, current Africa Director, first opened a studio under the banner of the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy at the St Peters Church Hall in the centre of Hermanus. Immediately successful, the studio filled a much-needed gap for children and teens wishing to experience the fun of drama, while at the same time uniquely developing crucial life skills. Today the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy has successful studios operating in Hermanus, Grabouw, Caledon, Greyton, Gansbaai and Swellendam where local children can access the programme as an extra mural. Schools such as Applewood Preparatory and Greyton House have long used the curriculum as part of their Arts & Culture learning area, with the entire student body benefiting from weekly exposure to the programme. Anima Children’s Therapy Centre joined the programme three years ago and has seen excellent responses in children with developmental barriers. This year Botrivier Primary joined the programme and witnessed such outstanding growth in language and confidence that they “toured” one of their plays to Gansbaai to much applause.

Award-winning Curriculum Based on its enduring philosophy to develop advanced skills in confidence, communication and creativity in all children regardless of ability, the Helen O’Grady programme uses an award-winning, cutting-edge curriculum developed over 40 years and tried and tested around the globe. Currently nearly 100 000 students worldwide attend weekly classes based on the brilliant curriculum first introduced by Australian teacher Helen O’Grady. Spanning 15 years, the curriculum covers all ages from 3 to 18, with modules specifically designed by educational specialists for kindergarten, Lower Primary, Upper Primary and Youth Theatre phases. No lesson is ever repeated, and all lessons and years accrue and contribute towards building one of the best foundations in general and specific life skills available today. Lessons typically are geared towards building confidence in speech and communication, improvisational ability, conflict and problem resolution, understanding movement and spatial dynamics, social awareness and interpersonal relationships. With all teaching taking place through fabulously fun and high-energy activities, classes are never boring and students grow rapidly and irresistibly. The curriculum remains the backbone of the Helen O’Grady programme and accounts for its enduring success in enabling wonderful growth in

speech communication expression

public

all children. Because of its developmental/remedial focus, the programme attracts much interest from parents whose children struggle with a range of developmental challenges. Vision for the future An amazing testimony to the programme’s power to impact children and teens is the ability of lessons to engage and transform children around the world, whether in Vietnam, the USA or Spain! Over the last couple of years, the Academy has started classes throughout the rest of Africa and today children in Ghana, Morocco, Nigeria, Malawi and many more countries are also receiving the life-changing training. Here in the Overberg, the Academy will continue to bring its classes to all at a very reasonable fee.The Academy is exploring further opportunities for studios and school programmes, including sponsored or subsidised programmes for the disadvantaged. As Principal Grant Griffiths says, “I am not here to change what has worked worldwide for 40 years. I just want to make the programme more accessible to all, and to ensure children get a chance to grow dynamically outside of the traditional classroom.” Parents, schools and organisations interested in finding out more about the programme should contact Grant Griffiths at grant@helenogrady.co.za. To see the classes in action, view the short video at www.helenogrady.co.za.

V ignette Table

V ignette

I love the word and I love the concept of table vignettes. It is a stylist’s canvas. A gorgeous still life that creates a mood and pulls together a room or can be just a table to play with your collectibles. With the start of a New Year and refresh after a break, one feels like a bit of decorating and creating in the home again. So allow me to inspire you with the concept of a vignette. A vignette is a creative arrangement or display. A short impressionistic scene that focuses on objects and tells a story. Makes you stop and appreciate a collection. A vignette can be created in any room but is most effective in an entrance hall, or a dead corner in your home or to complement the balance of a room. You need a light source because your vignette will become a showpiece of objects for you and your guests to appreciate. It has to be seen or the affect will be lost To create a table vignette you need a flat surface. Using accessories like vases, mirrors, art and collectibles for your display. Like staging up a movie set. The vignette should be in the style and theme of the room. There are a few key elements; an anchor or centre piece, a collection with layers, varying heights and varying sized objects, colour coordination and texture. To demonstrate I will take you through my table vignettes. I use a gold mirror as an anchor piece and it becomes my dominate element. It creates the light source I am after and gives a lot of texture and depth to the room. I place a painting without a frame in the middle of the mirror for effect and colour.

My objects are a collection of handcrafted china porcelain vases and jars, with horse sculptures to complement my theme. I choose to layer the table clothes for texture and to repeat the colours in the painting. This all coordinates with the rest of the room. Create depth by starting the display from the back to the front. This can also be achieved by a centre piece. I elevate the items to varying heights by using stacks of books and pedestals, working again from the back to the front. Display the objects in odd numbers; groups of three or five, some smaller than others, varying in shape but still correlated parts. My second vignette is a collection of antique wine decanters on an old kitchen table. The different cut glass is my light source and sparkles the daylight into the room. I use a glass vase with leaves as the centre piece, the green of the leaves provides the colour theme. Old books elevate my display and the varying heights are given by the differing decanters. The odd numbers of groups of three and five give balance. By the end of the day your vignette should be to please the eye and balanced. You can create table vignettes on coffee tables, patio tables or in your garden with plants and potholders. Have fun with your house and objects, till next time Elmarie de Waal

Q&A Meyrick Pringle

What do you think of the Indian test pitches and where did we go wrong, or in which department are we lacking? I’m not making excuses on the way the series panned out, BUT SERIOUSLY, how can you prepare wickets like that? – I think the ICC should step in and give minimum requirements as to how pitches should be as standard, grass and bounce, but I doubt that would happen as the BCCI control world cricket. Give us your predictions for the England tour of South Africa this December. For South Africa to finish as the no.1 ranked Test side, we need to draw the series with England. This is always a great series between SA/England, Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander would have had a nice long rest so they will be fired up – Morne Morkel is on fire at the moment, bowled superbly in India – Plenty of English supporters will be at the 1st Test in Cape Town (Newlands) and of course the “Barmy Army” – Really looking forward to the series and plenty of SA and English supporters not attending the matches will be glued to the tv. What local team franchise and player should we keep an eye on this summer? Local sides to look out for would be: Cape Cobras, Unlimited Titans, Bizhub Lions and Dolphins – The players to look out for are: Cape Cobras, Beuran Hendricks, Stiaan Van Zyl, Dane Piedt, Dane Paterson – Unlimited Titans, Merchant de Lange, Lesiba Ngoepe, Mangaliso Mosehle, Lions, Temba Bavuma, Shaylen Pillay, Rassie van der Dussen, Hardus Viljoen, Sunfoil Dolphins: Camerfon Delport, Cody Chetty, Andile Phehlukwayo, Vaughn van Jaarsveld, Jonathan Vandiar Mitchell Johnson has announced his retirement from international cricket. Australians rate him as one of the finest bowlers of all time even though he never spent a prolonged period of time as the nr 1 bowler in the world. How do you rate him as a player against the greats of past and present? Mitchell Johnson announced his retirement from international cricket I think too early, he was still firing with all cylinders and at good pace, it would have come at a very big surprise to all ex-players around the world – I would definitely rate him right up with the best. What do you think of the USA All-Stars tour led by Tendulkar and Warne, and what could the future impact on world Cricket be should the US get more involved?

Do you have any cricket questions for Meyrick, please email it to us @ cricket@splashmag.co.za

Great concept and see a big future in the USA, watched the matches and they were very interesting indeed, was really good to see the old chaps back on the field – Some still looked very fit. This seems to be the new trend around the world at the moment, public want to see the Legends from back in the day back on the field – We have the MCL2020 (Masters Champions League) starting soon in the UAE with a long list of Legends in the line-up – There will also be a PSL (Pakistan Super League) tournament in Qatar soon as well on pretty much the same concept as the MCL – More and more of these events will take place around the world promoting the game of Cricket, maybe (Germany, Norway, Hong Kong, Japan).
