Sticking to that new year's resolution is not always that easy. Here's some interesting info on how it all started... Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts. The Romans began each year by making promises to the god Janus, for whom the month of January is named. In the Medieval era, the knights took the "peacock vow" at the end of the Christmas season each year to re-affirm their commitment to chivalry. At watchnight services, many Christians prepare for the year ahead by praying and making these resolutions. This tradition has many other religious parallels. During Judaism's New Year, Rosh Hashanah, through the High Holidays and culminating in Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), one is to reflect upon one's wrongdoings over the year and both seek and offer forgiveness. People can act similarly during the Christian liturgical season of Lent, although the motive behind this holiday is more of sacrifice than of responsibility. In fact, the practice of New Year's resolutions came, in part, from the Lenten sacrifices.

As we step out of 2016 and move into 2017, this is a time of reflection on the past year and wondering what the New Year will bring us. Many of us will make so called New Years resolutions which will last for all of two/ three weeks. New memories will be made in the coming year and music will be a part of these memories. New songs will be written and sung and be indelibly printed on or minds. May we stride into the New Year with our head held high, a song in our heart and a dance in our steps.

Nathaniel Rateliff and The Nightsweats.

Released in 2015, this is Nathaniel Rateliff ’s first Album with The Nightsweats and he transforms from a solo folk singer to a funky soul bandleader, getting his swagger on and becomes a force of nature. The Nightsweats are a gritty band which includes an organist and a horn section. This album is unapologetic in its stomping rawness. Rateliff an accomplished solo singer songwriter is a little more introspective with lyrics that at times reflect sorrow at heart.

Sleep In The Park by Old Sea Brigade.

Old Sea Brigade is a solo singer/songwriter by the name of Ben Cramer. Sleep In The Park is one of a five song, self titled EP. Released Jan.2016. Recorded in a bare bones manner with nothing more than vocals, acoustic guitar and piano, there are brilliant touches of texture added to form depth and atmosphere. Beautifully written and flawlessly sung.

Listen now

A Sailors Guide To The Earth by Sturgill Simpson.

Released April 2016, Nominated for Album Of The Year 2017 Grammies. Country is a limiting term for this artist who embodies the word in the most inclusive sense and defies any sort of label. This singer songwriter displays unfiltered sincerity and deprecating humour. His 3rd solo Album presents a change in tone and a wealth of rewards for every creative risk. On this Album Sturgill draws from his time in the Navy in his deeply personal lyrics.

Rolling Stone review and song

Superwoman by Rebecca Ferguson.

This the 4th Album by the 2010 XFactor UK runner up was released in October 2016. Opening the release with a single called Bones, a cover, which sets a soulful tone. This singer songwriter is blessed with a strong earthy and soulful voice. On this Album Ferguson balances R&B bravado with motown-esque grooves and a melodious 70’s style. One gets the sense that Ferguson pours all of her feelings and experiences into her music.

Check out her album on iTunes

Visit their website and listen to some of their tracks.

Lukas Graham Band Blue Album.

Released in June 2015. This Band takes it name from the lead singer, lyricist and leader. They are a Danish band whose music encompasses pop, alternative rock, soul and funk. They ignores any particular genre bracket to draw on whatever works, whether it be current or vintage. The lyrics in their music hint at a troubled past which they have turned into an optimistic future. Piano, strings and horns help lift a passionate delivery that is hard to resist. The breakout single 7 Years Old has been nominated for Song Of The Year 2017 Grammies.

HYPNO - ART

We are happy to announce that the launch of the HYPNO – ART workshop in Hermanus was a great success. The comments and responses from the participants made us decide to make this a regular event, affording other people to get in touch with their creative side and the artist within.

The power lays in the combination of hypnosis and art as the real potential of our creativity lays within our subconscious mind. This part of the mind holds our imagination ~ innovation ~ loves images, pictures and is fantasy based. Once we tap into this part of our mind, the creative flow is infinite and the possibilities are endless. Bianca expressed it as ‘an

I

t is astonishing what possibilities are available to us once we begin to utilise our subconscious resources. As these journeys are very personal, each individual has the opportunity to embark on a unique experience. May this be releasing a creative block, exploring a new medium, expressing a spiritual path or inner desire, finding answers to questions that can bring healing, connecting to a new sense of inspiration – vision and idea or simply discover a new aspect of oneself. These outcomes and new understandings can be incredibly motivating and therapeutic.

honour to facilitate these sessions and to feel and observe the shifts taking place.’ We would like to thank all the participants of the Hermanus Art community for your support and we are looking forward to witness and guide you through many more profound journeys in the future.

What transpired as well, whether the individual is familiar with the artistic self already or is just curious to explore the creative aspect of self, the benefits gained by attending this workshop are exceptional. The safe non-judgmental environment and the group dynamic promote creativity to flow freely. Just as Pieter said: ‘What an awesome experience at the Hypno Art Workshop. Seeing creativity take flight uninhibited and carefree.’

BROERS EN SUSTERS. . PIKSWARTNAG.

W

hen was the end of the world predicted? You know, that famous day – when the Mayan Calendar ended? 23 December Two thousand and something. I’ve already forgotten. But I remember all the hype at the time. Well brace yourself, darling, according to TV news, economists, Facebook and the hordes of pessimists that inhabit the third rock from the sun, 2017 is going to be the worst year ever! And we all know that whatever you read on Facebook must be true. Let’s face it; 2016 was not our proudest moment in history and it finally proved one thing: the world is run by idiots. No thanks, I’m so not interested in the job. Besides I’m a tad overqualified. For starters I have a brain. And a conscience… And it follows that everyone who allowed these infamous leaders to come into power are idiots as well. And that of course includes the millions of voters…. That to me is the saddest revelation of all – the most intelligent species on the planet is actually everything but. As the heading of this article predicted… It’s all doom and gloom, brethren. Ah… NOW I have your attention… It’s a known fact that humans thrive on bad news and tragedy… Ooops. Maybe you’ll lose interest when I tell you that my Super Power is that I can spot that feeble flickering light at the end of the crumbling tunnel. Because the good news is: Not everyone is an idiot. Ah. What a relief. The rest my friend, is up to you. It is up to you to choose NOT to be an idiot. You must seek out other non-idiots. That is this year’s challenge. You don’t have to listen to the hatred spouted by idiots. Move on, turn up the music, switch off the TV, unfriend the person. Stay far away… the condition is contagious. Trust me… spend enough time with the Idiot and his idiotic followers and soon you too will become one. It’s not easy being the odd one out… It takes courage. I have a fabulous little whale soap in Amulet: At the back it reads: if you were lucky enough to be born different, please don’t ever change. I just love that. En hier is ons weer. ‘n Nuwe jaar. Nuut en vol beloftes? Nuwe voornemens. New beginnings.

Desember se besoek was ‘n heerlike verrassing… So? In SuidAfrika is daar ‘n konstante buzz. Soos in Amulet. Dink jou in… 2017 gaan voorwaar ‘n uitdaging wees. And on the upside; only three more years then we will all have 20-20 (hindsight) vision! And then you’ll realize that 2017 was not that bad after all!

Consumers urged to 'skip the kreef this summer' WWF South Africa has launched a campaign calling on consumers to “skip the kreef this summer”, as this popular seafood treat has now moved onto the Red list of the Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI).

The SASSI list is a traffic-light system that helps consumers make sustainable seafood choices: Green is “best choice”, Orange is “think twice” and Red is “don’t buy”. WWF has warned that the West Coast Rock Lobster (Jasus lalandii), commonly known as kreef, could disappear from menus altogether within the next five years unless radical action is taken to save the fishery. The “Skip the kreef this summer” campaign follows an outcry over the government’s recent announcement of an unchanged Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for kreef this season. With only 2% of original stock remaining, the species has gone into a precipitous decline due to illegal fishing and poor management of the fishery. To raiseHorizontal awareness, WWF has launched a digital campaign asking consumers to Ad Sea Safaris.pdf 1 2016-10-28 05:15:54 PM avoid eating kreef, as they would any other SASSI Red-listed species. The campaign

is aimed at mobilising consumers and getting them to use their buying power and voices to help this species and the fishers who depend on it for their livelihoods. In addition, a coalition of fishers and WWF have co-signed an open letter to the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Senzeni Zokwana calling for a radical rethink of how the West Coast Rock Lobster resource is managed in the interests of everyone involved in the industry. WWF-SASSI Manager Pavitray Pillay commented: "This is a fishery in crisis and we need real leadership to turn it around. Consumers have a key role to play in supporting legitimate fishers and demanding change through their buying practices.” WWF marine scientist Jessica Greenstone said, “If we can’t change the trends, a viable commercial West Coast Rock Lobster fishery within the next five years is unlikely. This has implications for both our marine ecosystems, in which kreef play a key role, and the communities that rely on them for their livelihoods. This is why the coalition, which includes fisher organisations, is urging government to take immediate action for more effective management.”

New Year,

new ME ... Talk to your skincare professional to find out which treatment is the best option for you. And get the skin that you deserve in 2017!

GET BACK TO BASICS

While some New Year’s resolu– tions focus on the new, others are simply a way for you to get back on track. Another New Year’s resolution to consider is to recommit to wearing sun– screen daily. The sun is one of the leading causes of signs of aging on your skin. Shielding your skin from it on a daily basis is a must if you hope to look youthful throughout 2017 and beyond. The latest technology sunscreens contains huge amounts of anti-oxidants that will also treat sun damaged skin, and not just protect it. Great products to look out for: the all new Lamelle Helase 50, Nimue SPF 40, PhFormula CC cream30, and the well-known, Heliocare SPF 50.

START SAVING FOR A RANGE OF TREATMENTS

It’s not unusual for people to think of January 1st as the beginning of a new life or as a chance to wipe the slate clean and make a number of improvements in their lives. Most New Year’s resolutions focus on self-improvement in some way, like quitting smoking or losing weight. If one major concern includes the signs of aging on your face, the New Year can be the optimal time to start planning ways to reduce those signs or even reverse them. Whether you just noticed your first wrinkle or have been thinking about facial rejuvenation for some time, there’s a few resolutions that are perfect for you this year.

FIND A SKINCARE ROUTINE THAT WORKS FOR YOU

This last New Year’s resolution isn’t for the commitment-phobic. You might decide that 2017 is the year you’ll finally take on a skincare journey in the fight against ageing. This is a big step, you’ll want to break your resolution down into smaller pieces. Step one might be to book a consultation and learn more about the procedure, including whether it’s appropriate for you. And in what combinations these treatments need to be done to give you superior results. Considering your budget, time and expectations. Step two might be to start saving up for a range of treatments over a period of time. Whether you are working towards a special occasion, or just wanting to see a small difference in the sun spots that you developed over the December holidays, one must be realistic about expectations and that a few treatments may be necessary. With the help of a home care routine, one can get quicker results. Step three is to start making plans for the treatments. With some treatments one can experience mild ‘downtime’, with some bruising, flaking and redness that can last for a few days. Other treatments are preferred to be done in the winter months. Let us help you to look younger, fresher, and glowier in 2017. Book your complementary consultation with one of our professionals. And get the skin you deserve- you owe it to yourself!

As you get older, your skin needs change. On top of that, your skin might need different care and treatment at different times of the year. For example, you might deal with drier skin in the winter than in the summer. If you’re dealing with acne, for instance, you’ll want to find a routine that clears up the blemishes without blasting your skin dry. If lines and wrinkles are the problem, you’ll want a routine that helps reduce them or make them less visible. While you can find products to help you in the drugstore or department store, consulting with a medical professional before choosing a product line can take the guesswork out of the process.

TRY A NEW TREATMENT

If there’s a non-surgical treatment that you’ve been thinking about trying, the New Year is the ideal time to give it a go. Nonsurgical treatments, such as Botox injections or fillers, tend to cost significantly less than surgery, so the financial strain is lower. They also tend to last for less time than the results of the surgery, making them less of a commitment. For a quick fix lift, look into the one-stitch Silhouette Lift, and the new Plexr machine can transform those droopy eyelids, without surgery. One could opt for non-invasive therapies such as Laser, for the treatment of pigmentation, rosacea and facial capillaries.

I

n international sport on the other hand, it is all about winning when it comes to any international competition on the playing field. An unsuccessful team leaves bodies behind and if it is a player of colour who has entered the arena on the ticket of transformation and not on merit, it is a big negative with implications for everybody involved. The most damage is done to the individual player at that point in time but the decision makers also have the longerlasting and huge social behavioural change and the negative implication of social change of the client base and loss of clients, the main consumers of the game to contend with. The impact to the individual player and his people around him is huge. Confidence is out of the window and the rest is history with damage never to be reversed again. The consumer of the game is more tolerant and will be back; but only up to a point. We have now exceeded that point. A place where I believe we have arrived at in SA rugby. It is a heart breaking experience for those of us who love the game. Heart breaking.

In my report to SARU after the tournament I said that the quota system must be revisited because it influences the players with the necessary talent and capacity negatively. I had to be honest with myself and put my belief and experiences with the players to paper. The rest

is history. I was fired and the principles that I held were never investigated. The status quo is still the same today. As for the present system and status of the national coach, his support team, the level of rugby that we play, the indaba that SARU had, the financial position of rugby in SA, the latest new decisions that SARU has taken to save itself from bankruptcy, to protect the responsible people’s jobs, exactly the same principles still apply. A lot of talks have taken place, meetings have been held and new policies formulated, but everything remains the same. Since we had this last disastrous season of the Springboks, I have not yet read any article stating the reasons for the results. If you loose a match there must be an ‘on the field’ reason why you lost. If you cannot pinpoint that, how can you coach the players to win the next match. Is there anybody in SARU who knows that? And if they do, why do they not do something about it. Everyday that you open the newspaper you see more coaches have been appointed and more structures have been put in place that must change existing structures (job creation for the proposer). No new ideas come to the fore that can actually improve our game, only suggestions copying structures that some other countries have in place. Dit bring my by die volgende vraag: Wat het van SA se eie rugby-identiteit geword? Dit is werklik

SPLASH 14

vir my ’n skrikwekkende situasie. The parasites can then be removed from the system within a year or two. If you make a contribution and you are successful, you will survive. If not, you will find yourself out on the pavement. Rugby has got many functions in society. But for amateurs to run a professional system has never been a success and will and cannot work in future.

“10 WEEKS TO A SUMMER BODY!” Nic Lotter is a certified Personal Trainer at Proactive Fitness, he is passionate about the human body. The body has a unique ability to be altered by tailored dieting and specific training methods. Under normal circumstances, the body adapts beautifully to externally imposed demands, which any individual can embark upon, such as a calorie restricted diet and consistent resistance training as well as a structured cardio program, these three main pillars yield results which Nic is all too familiar with! “10 weeks to a lean, shredded Summer body!” is the challenge he has given himself. He would like to prove that one can lean down on a budget and without any chemical fat burners or steroids. As a competitive athlete within the bodybuilding and fitness industry, he understands what it takes to achieve these highly desired results. He would love to share his personal journey to a summer body with all those who are interested in seeing that well known saying played out, ‘what you put in, is what you get out’, or in the case of a calorie restricted diet...what you DON’T put in. He has gone through a very ‘relaxed’ winter, otherwise known as an “off-season” for the competitive fitness athlete. During this period, he was not calorie restricting himself as he would when preparing for the fitness stage, even though his training was still quiet intense. Unfortunately the photos we have of his progress are not good enough quality for print media. The ‘AFTER’ picture is from 2015, just before he climbed on stage for IFBB Western Provincials – we have featured it here, as proof that what he is attempting, he has done before with fantastic results. So watch this space for a more revealing update on his progress and his results. His 10 weeks began on the 10th of October 2016 – he would love to invite you to follow his progress on Facebook, either personally via his name or via Proactive Fitness’s Facebook page. He will be posting weekly pictures, to his body transformation, as well as his daily meals, supplementation intake and his various training methods. This 10 week transformation is also to launch his upcoming You Tube – Fitness channel, whereby he will be sharing his passion for health, fitness and the joys of living a disciplined life, as a family man. Or pop in at Proactive Fitness to see for yourself!

The Hermanus Property Market today REDZetc started operating in July 2013 and since inception has grown to more than 100 independent contractor agents throughout the Western Cape, Garden Route, Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga. Not a single agent has been recruited, but have all joined the company of their own accord and were all previously known by Pam Snyman, the company principal, or have been referred to REDZetc by people that believe in this innovative brand and its culture of absolute compliance, integrity, transparency, expertise and passion. In Hermanus and surrounds REDZetc currently has 16 top agents operating from Botrivier to Stanford and as we have mentioned in the past it is very important that real estate agents understand and have insight into the market in which they operate. The economy of real estate is very localised and one can never generalise with respect to ‘the property market’. You have to consider local conditions with respect to sales and values as they are influenced by supply and demand in the particular area.

Hermanus ranks 74th in the country out of 828 towns in respect of median sales prices Property sale prices have increased as follows over the past year: Freehold by 15.72%, Sectional Title units by 11.5% and unbuilt erven by 20.8%

This information is a real eye-opener and should assist property sellers or potential purchasers in Hermanus in their decision-making process from an investment perspective. Real estate price increases in these economic turbulent times are truly a positive indicator for Hermanus and the surrounding areas. Should you require any further information or a market-related estimation of a property’s current market value, just call on Pam (082 8000 867) or any REDZetc estate agent who will gladly assist. Our website address is www.redzproperties.co.za.

D

My eie klein biblioteek. Hier kan ek myself uitleef in my eie droomwêreld. Die huis en ek verstaan mekaar. My beste tye; wanneer my ou vriendin Pam kom kuier en ons die esels in die tuin uitdra en heeldag staan en skilder tussen die bome, met die voëls wat musiek maak, heeltemal tevrede en gelukkig.
