Winter food @ Molteno’s If you happen to blow into Moletnos in Onrus on a cold and windy night, thank your lucky stars. Because, long before you arrived, the pizza oven and an old aga were lit. Early on a Wednesday night, SPLASH Magazine decided to pop in at one of Onrus’ favourite local eateries. Inside, Moltenos is scattered with mix-and-match wooden tables and chairs, big chalk boards and lanterns window. The locals are perched on high chairs at the bar and greet you as you enter and Chef Gordon greets each diner with a loud “Howzit!” from the warm kitchen in the back. Around us there are tables ranging from large groups to single diners who want to feel the warmth that no heater at home could provide, the warmth of good company. We start by looking at a comprehensive wine list, dotted with some fabulous local wines. Tonight we’re having the Raka Spliced, an old favourite. We watch Chef Gordon from our vantage point of the kitchen. My eyes were like a tracking device as the plates made the trip from the kitchen to the table in front of me. Chunks of salmon and mussels lay abundantly in a creamy broth with lots of parsley and other yummy things. My bruschetta has to sit in the chowder-like-soup for a while so that it sips up all that goodness and becomes completely soft with the tasty soup. And, this soup doesn’t pretend to be anything other than a hearty, chunky soup. You can taste each individual element. The sad part is, that when you have picked at the small pieces of vegetable left over in your plate, and when at last you have contorted the plate and spoon in ways to make sure nothing is left, you still wonder whether getting seconds is an option. By now, Chef Gordon has momentarily abandoned

his post in the kitchen and is welcoming and greeting the diner who snuck in as he was working. He jokes about this one’s dog, reminisces about another’s and laughs out loud as he catches up with each person. And tourists? Well, they get greeted like old friends too! mustard and port sauce and cob, or kabeljou. Both dishes came with green beans, beetroot, pumpkin and the crispiest potato wedges, all fresh and homemade. The knife glided through the soft meat and the tangy mustard sauce is the perfect accompaniment. The cob was perfectly seasoned and wonderfully moist. When we asked Chef Gordon about the seafood in Moltenos he says that it is actually their best seller, despite being known for their pizzas and pastas. Another well-known menu item is the Gordon Blue. The beef with mushrooms, cheese and other secret goodies. This roll is then dipped in breadcrumbs and fried. Finally, it’s topped with an ooey gooey cheese sauce. As the evening winds down there is only time and space for one more thing, Moltenos’ pecan nut tart. The buttery crust is blanketed with crunchy pecan nuts sitting in a fudgy layer. It is the perfect end to the perfect meal. But, between the table and the door, there are a few more conversations to be had and goodbyes to be said. Chef Gordon greets all the way from the kitchen, waving a skillet, spatula or whatever utensil he was busy with. Winter can come, as long as the Overstrand has cosy places like Moltenos to help ward off the chill and warm the heart. Dayne Elizabeth Nel

Saam met ŉ veertigtal ander taalen kultuurorganisasies werk hulle saam onder die sambreel van die Afrikaanse Taalraad om ons taal en kultuur uit te bou tot voordeel en genot van almal wat deel daarvan wil wees.

Kom lééf jou passie by Die Dameskring Die Dameskring is ‘n Kultuurorganisasie vir die Afrikaanssprekende vrou. Dit bied aan die vrou ŉ platform om haar Afrikaans-wees en Christenskap uit te leef en terselfdertyd ook die geleentheid om bemagtig te word sodat sy ŉ verskil in die gemeenskap kan maak. Die Dameskring se visie is om vroue te inspireer en te bemagtig om as leiers op te tree en daardeur hul gemeenskappe te dien en te help uitbou aan ons land. Die vrou van vandag, is benewens haar vele rolle as eggenote, ma en beroepsvrou, ook die steunpilaar van baie ander. Om haar plek vol te staan, moet sy voortdurend geïnspireer en toegerus word. Geleenthede wat die Dameskring bied is opleidingsessies, maandelikse takvergaderings, tweejaarlikse gebiedskonferensies in 13 streke regoor die land asook ŉ Nasionale Beraad. Die organisasie bestaan uit 135 takke en is die stem vir ongeveer 1 500 vroue in Suid-Afrika. Alhoewel ons ŉ A-politiese organisasie is, is ons lede nie bang om op te staan vir dit waarin ons glo nie.

Die Dameskring se primêre fokus is die skep van ŉ ondersteuningsraamwerk vir die lede deur opregte vriendskappe te kweek, mekaar te bemoedig te midde van ŉ moeilike samelewing en om mekaar daadwerklik te ondersteun in tye van nood en trauma. • Bemagtiging - Goeie leierskap is nie iets wat jy vir mense doen nie; dit is iets wat jy saam met mense doen. Deurdat jy jouself bemagtig, kan jy ook ander bemagtig. Die bewaring en bevordering van Afrikaans en ons kultuur bly een van die organisasie se grootste doelwitte en die Dameskring dra reeds byna 10 jaar by tot beurse om Afrikaanssprekende leerlinge die geleentheid te bied om in hulle moedertaal onderrig te word. Lede se vrywillige bydraes tot hierdie fonds het die organisasie in staat gestel om sedert 2003 reeds sowat R510 000.00 aan beurse te bestee. • Bemarking - 1 Tim 4:12 (b): “...maar wees jy vir die gelowiges ŉ voorbeeld in woorde en gedrag, in liefde, geloof en reinheid.” Deurdat jy in jouself glo, kan ander dit sien en ook in hulleself glo. Ons wil die organisasie bekendstel aan Afrikaanssprekende Christenvroue en elkeen bo 18 jaar aanmoedig om aan te sluit. Na 45 jaar is dit nodig om ons koestering met ander te deel en ons kinders te leer wat dit beteken om ŉ Dameskring-vrou te wees. Ons moet ander mentor deur ons dade.

Ek kan nog in ŉ klein, duur plek bly, maar ek kan wragtag nie in ŉ plek met lelike meubels en fake Afrika prints teen die mure leef nie. Hierdie mense moet ŉ draai by Amulet kom maak! So waar het ek toe uiteindelik opgeeïndig? In ŉ blink penthouse in Sandton? ŉ Ruim kothuis met ŉ tuintjie in Parktown? Dalk ŉ grondwoonstel in ŉ veilige kompleks? Toe nou nie. Ek bly in die een helfte van ŉ ou skakelhuisie (ŉ semi). Oud en vervalle. Oorgroei en ysig in die winter, want die huisie is so oud dat die vensters en deure nie behoorlik seël nie. Hoe is dit dan moontlik wonder jy? Hoe het ek hier beland? Die antwoord is eenvoudig. Die mooiste chandelier in die kombuis. O ja, en die drie geraamde ou tapeserie (van hooghartige katte gedress in Victoriaanse outfits) teen die gangmuur. Die oorspronklike houtvloere wat kraak, die pragtige ou staalplafonne en warmwaterpype wat vir jou grom in die nag. Ek bly in ŉ stukkie geskiedenis in die middel van die ekonomiese hart van Afrika. Met ŉ piepklein tuintjie en ŉ stoepie waar die buurt se kat in die middae op die bank lê en slaap. My eie stukkie paradys hier in Johannesburg. Hier kan ek rose plant, want hier’s nie ŉ Suid-Ooster wat die delikate blomme gaan verwoes nie. Ek en die sekuriteitswag waai vriendelik elke dag vir mekaar as ek verby ry oppad werk toe. En ek het intussen ŉ asempie bygekry, Diva. ŉ Piepklein Yorkie, ŉ handsakhond wat elke dag saam met my werk toe gaan en saam met my inkopies doen. Dit was of die hond of ŉ boyfriend (grappie!) het ek vir my man gesê. Hy’t toe maar gesettle vir die hond al is ons eintlik Rottweiler mense. Ek kan nie wag om ou grote se gesig te sien wanneer ek met Dame Diva Divine daar opdaag nie. Hier in Johannesburg is die outfits net so belangrik soos die hond se pedigree. Sy’t tot ŉ kroontjie, I kid you not. Interessant genoeg, hier in die (doodloop) straat waar ek bly, stap die inwoners ook met hulle honde, sonder leibande mind you, maar niemand kry hartaanvalle daaroor nie. Seker omdat daar baie groter dinge is om oor te kwel. Soos e-toll en slaggate so groot soos my kar en 24-uur blackouts omdat kabeldiewe nie gestop kan word nie. Gee jou weer perspektief oor die wonderlike plek waar ons bly. Daai plek met die berge en die see en die mooi gladde pad. En, die plaaslike koerant is nie naastenby so interessant soos die Hermanus Times nie! Die winterweer hier in die Noorde is beslis beter as in Onrus. Percy sê my dit reën al vir dae aanmekaar, die wind is woes en die son is soek. Maar, dan dink ek aan my huidige sleutelsituasie. In Onrus het ek presies een sleutel vir my huis. Vir die voordeur. Dis dit. Een sleutel. Hier in Jozi bly ek in ŉ huisie en ek het 10 sleutels, ja TIEN! Die hek werk elektronies, dan vat dit my ure om die sekuriteitshek se sleutel te kry. Dan is daar een vir die garage, die voordeur, die tuinhekkie, die agterste hekkie na die agtertuin, die alarm, die hek tussen my en die bure, die sekuriteitshek by die agterdeur, en die agterdeur. Ek moet nog uitfigure waarvoor die res van die bos sleutels is. As iemand dalk die erf sou betree, sal ek so moet soek om die regte sleutel te kry om uit of in te kom, ek sal eerder die indringer met die bos sleutels probeer doodgooi.

Instructions • Preheat oven to 200°C. • Drizzle the butternut and tomatoes with olive oil and roast them in separate roasting trays until cooked and dark on the edges. The butternut will take longer than the tomatoes. • Heat a splash of olive oil in a round Le Creuset casserole, and sauté the onion until translucent. Add the garlic and thyme and cook for a further 2-3 minutes. • Add half the butternut and half the tomatoes, and mash till smooth with a potato masher. Then add the remaining butternut and tomato, as well as the stock. • Bring to a boil, and season well with salt and pepper. Adjust consistency by adding more stock if necessary, and garnish with pumpkin seeds before serving.

JENNY JACKSON Hermanus artist, Jenny Jackson, goes from strength to strength. After two years in which she exhibited and held two solos, at the Rossouw Modern Art Gallery, she has opened her own . The recent Fine Arts Festival was an undoubted success for her. A collection of portraits were well received, with overall positive interest in all the works on show. With a rapidly growing cliental of art lovers, Jenny’s work is finding its way not only onto the walls of homes all over the world but also into international collections of up and coming artists. Q: At nearly 80 you are producing more works than ever before: what is motivating you? A: I am firstly, hugely driven by the amazing reactions of all the different people who seem to find my work intriguing, even inspiring. I find that I am also learning from them as they tell me what they like and what stands out for them. I am also lucky to be able to paint from morning to night or for as long as my energy last. That in itself motivate me. Q: Was art always your profession? A: Far from it, I was an antique dealer in England for about 40 years. I always loved paintings and bought and sold minor masters whenever I had the opportunity. I visited the national Art Galleries from a very young age, but it never once entered my head that maybe I, too, could paint. Q; When did you make the big leap? A: In my mid-sixties it quite suddenly was the only thing that mattered and since then it has become my whole life, with 4 or 5 hours spent at my easel every day of the week. Time, becomes meaningless when working on a canvas. Q: Tell me, how do you paint? A: I don’t really know! It just seems to happen. Not only that, but the less I try to make it happen the more thrilling the results can be. Sometimes a painting just won’t come to life or looks all wrong, so I put it up on my wall until it feel ready to work on again. With a fresh canvas on the easel I hope for inspiration to return. One’s the painting on the easel “sings” to me, I know it is finished. Q: It does seem as though at this stage you are painting mainly still lives and portraits? A: True, with a landscape or seascape mixed in. I would like to think that the main thread running through everything I paint is my personal connection with beauty; be it in a flower, the play of light on an object or the inner beauty exposed in the eyes of my model. Q: Why do your latest works remind me so strongly of the Impressionists? Is this your chosen technique? A: Not consciously, but it was my parent’s favourite period and there were always one or two reproductions on the walls. I do not seem to be in charge of what happens when I am in front of my canvas: I go where my palette knife and colours lead me. I am finally learning to fully trust the process. Painting for me is a purely instinctive love affair. Q: Finally; how did Spring arrive in the Autumn of your life, Jenny? A: Age, has never had any significance for me. It may be a cliché, but I am only as old as I feel, literally. Painting is my passion and I suppose you could say it has brought Spring into my Winter.

I can easily write pages and pages on the topic French style. It’s what I like, admire, can identify with, but most of all with which I can live. The use of colour and textiles fascinates me and the hopeless romance of the style bewitches me. French style is, above all, synonymous with glamour. However modestly, it taps into a great, glorious past where the decadence and sophistication of a Marie Antoinette, a Toulouse-Lautrec or a Colette contrasts with the classic symbols of the bourgeois, where luxury and comfort have always co-existed. It’s in this décor style that Renoir painted, and Balzac lived. It’s the result of its past that indeed makes the style so admirable. The follies of Versailles remain the most The style seeks to emulate “la grandeur”, to impress, almost arrogantly in a way, but with sheer quality and skilled workmanship. But, before I continue, note that the French style co- exist in two camps, which are like chalk and cheese; the aristocratic elegance versus the French Provencal. I opened Thai Combat Gym, Hermanus at the end of last year, after moving from Jhb where I owned a Muay Thai Gym with a partner. The gym is situated in Sandbaai and I teach authentic, ancient South Thailand Muay Thai under the leadership of some great Masters from Thailand and UK. In the 1800’s Muay Thai was practised by the soldiers of the Thai army in battle with neighbouring countries, using all parts of the body for self defence, hence Muay Thai is dubbed “the Martial Art of 8 limbs” using hands, elbows, knees and legs to defend oneself. The classes that are on offer at Thai Combat are: Evening Muay Thai classes; Beginners class Mon and Wed 18h30-20h00, intermediate class Tues and Thurs 18h30-20h00. These classes are great for learning defence and excellent for general

Thai X boxercise defence. Kids Muay Thai class; Wed 15h30-16h30 for kids ages 7-13 years. This class is great for developing I offer personal training throughout the day in an available time slot, either at the gym or I can come to your house provided that you have appropriate space available. These personal classes may be individual or small groups. I also offer self defence courses. Girl (em)power and kids (em)power self defence courses for kids as well as defence for adults. For the ladies and girls, I also offer anti-rape courses. Again, these courses can be done at the gym or at your own house.
