hou shalt not stand out from the crowd. Keep a low profile. Don’t question. Yes ma’am, no ma’am... Sorry sir. Single file children!... No talking in the corridor... Where is your hat, Hélène? Your hair should be tied! I tried so very hard to blend in. At the tender age of 10, being different is social suicide. My daughter Jana followed in my footsteps. At age 3 she had already decided how she would dress. Regardless. It would invariably involve a pair of too small baby shorts, tights, socks, tekkies, cowboy jacket, baseball cap and goggles. And don’t forget the tutu. Percy wanted to die of embarrassment. I encouraged this show of creativity and independence. I was insanely proud that my little darling did not fit the mold. Yes, my heart broke for her when she didn’t have many friends as she grew up. Different/special kids easily become outcasts. It’s only once they leave school that they come into their own. When it’s no longer important that you’re not a clone of The Group. Brainwashed children grow up to become average human beings who dress the same, drive identical cars and live in gated villages where the average visitor would get completely lost if you didn’t have an allotted number on your little front gate... Want alles lyk dieselfde. Listen, I’m not knocking conformity. It’s socially acceptable and encouraged... much easier to manage. Nice and Neutral. I call it boring. But hey, that’s me. And everyone knows I’m eccentric and outspoken. I was a director on Binnelanders (a South African soap) for several years. I was the only female director in a male dominated world. It was a very technical job that I found hard to crack, what with being a creative and emotional being... My strong point was that I could tell the story, work with the actors and bring emotion to the scenes. What frustrated me was that we had to shoot according to a rigid and very technical recipe,

the shots had to match, look the same... I was told that the viewer shouldn’t be able to tell who directed which episode. I had to be like the rest. i.e. disappear, become invisible. Which is kind of a death sentence for someone who wants to shine, make a statement, rock ‘n roll when others are waltzing. Otherwise, what’s the point? I’m different and proud of it. Mediocrity sucks. Mmmm... Could be a bumper sticker... or a T-shirt maybe? Change is scary. But we have to adapt. All the time. Some clever person said: if you’ve done changing, then you've done living. Well I ain’t done. Not by a long shot. I constantly have to reinvent myself – and my shop. Customers change... their needs change, not to mention their budgets. I love the fact that people (I nearly said ‘my people’) return time and time again and are astounded that Amulet hardly ever looks the same. Doesn’t happen all by itself, skattebol. It takes some serious shopping and sourcing. (Ja, I know, shame, poor me ☺ Someone’s gotta do the hard work) One of the most frequently asked questions I get: Where do you get all this amazing stock from? I can tell you this – it’s not all imported from China, my china. In my vorige artikel (ja, ek skakel nou sommer oor na Afrikaans, want ek kan en ek is lus om in my moedertaal te praat) het ek genoem dat ek nou besig is om te skryf aan die volgende reeks van Swartwater. Ek moes in my voorlegging vir die SABC verduidelik wat die tema van die opvolgreeks is. Dit was iets in die lyn van: as jy nie kan vrede maak met die verlede nie, sal jy nooit vry wees nie. (Ja, ek kan diep raak as dit moet.) Wanneer dit kom by draaiboeke skryf, word ek onbewustelik beïnvloed deur mense om my se energie en gevoelens. Ja, ek weet dit klink baie airy-fairy, maar dis hoe ek werk. Ek praat nie net van my familie en vriende nie, ek praat van almal. Almal met wie ek in aanraking kom, mense van wie ek lees of mense wat ek op TV sien of selfs deur Facebook of Youtube leer ken... Miljoene

siele die wêreld oor werk op my onderbewuste in... Ons deel universele emosies... Van die Russiese Tannie, die Township meisie tot by Mevrou Dokter Waterkloof... en ek vertel in Swartwater 2 stories van doodgewone mense wat ongelooflike struikelblokke moet oorkom... En een van die grootste dinge wat hulle terughou is die desperate vasklou aan die verlede. Hulle kan maar net nie laat los nie... Nie vergeet nie en nie vergewe nie... En as jy nie kan laat gaan nie... word jy van die binnekant vergiftig... To quote Nelson Mandela: ‘Resentment is like drinking poison and hoping that your enemy will die.’ Ons moet laat gaan. Almal van ons. Vergeet nou van wie het wat verkeerd gedoen en wie se skuld dit was... Ons warra warra daagliks oor die goeie ou dae... Sommige mense sou dit die slegte ou dae noem (afhangend aan watter kant van die dorp jy bly.) Elke nou en dan kom daar ‘n dag wat jou platry soos ‘n oorlogtenk... So ‘n week terug... Dis was ‘n koue bloue Maandag. Ek is in my winkel gekonfronteer met ‘n konstante gesanik oor hoe dinge net nie meer dieselfde is nie. Teen vier uur die middag wou ek sommer op 'n hopie gaan sit en krepeer. Pessimisme verlam ons. Dit depress my eindeloos. Ek's sommer lus en sit 'n sign op by Amulet: Moenie so pessimislik wees nie! Kom vertel my liewer iets lekker... Soos byvoorbeeld dat Julie die maand is wanneer Simondium hulle Afri-Franse fees hou en ons ons Franse herkoms vier. (Almal is welkom - of jy nou Franse voorsate het of nie.) Amulet is hierdie jaar genooi om ook by die pragtige Simondium Lodge te gaan pronk en ek beplan om ‘n paar unieke produkte en ontwerpe daar bekend te stel. En ek kan jou verseker dat dit nie middelmatig gaan wees nie... En as jy uitmis op die Afri-Franse fees, wees gerus... Amulet vier elke dag fees. In al die tale. In styl. Met ‘n sin vir humor... en ons is nooit ooit middelmatig nie. Vive la différence!

Hallo almal In hierdie uitgawe word 'n lekker nuwe kompetisie aangekondig wat deur VivA uitgedink is. Neem asseblief deel daaraan sodat die woorde wat ons elke dag gebruik ook opgeteken kan word. En lees 'n bietjie wat jy kan wen! VARSGEBEK Hoop jy nog hete kole op iemand se voorhoof, of sit jy eerder iemand in die oë? Het jy ’n Afrikaanse ekwivalent vir “dab” (as ’n fietsryer met sy/haar voet aan die grond raak; iets wat bergfietsryers vermy), ’n “bae” (before anyone else), of “YOLO” (You only live once)? Varsgebek is ’n splinternuwe kompetisie wat alle sprekers van Afrikaans die geleentheid bied om nuutskeppings, vars uitdrukkings of nuwe idiome in te stuur en daarmee lekker pryse los te slaan. Afrikaans is ’n polsende, lewenskragtige taal met ’n enorme reikwydte, maar soos enige ander lewende taal, is daar uitdrukkings en woorde wat in die volksmond bestaan wat nie in woordeboeke opgeteken word nie. Daarbenewens het ons vaktaal nodig wat met ons geïndustrialiseerde en gedigitaliseerde wêreld moet tred hou. Taalgebruikers het met Varsgebek die geleentheid om sulke nuwe woorde, vakterme, uitdrukkings, idiome of streektaal wat nog nie in woordeboeke of ander taalbronne opgeteken is nie, by Varsgebek in te skryf. ’n Paneel kundiges sal elke maand die inskrywings beoordeel en ’n weninskrywing aanwys. Die wins vir die taal is dat al die inskrywings aan leksikograwe voorgelê word vir moontlike opname in woordeboeke en databasisse – en so bewaar ons ’n erfenis vir die hele taalgemeenskap. Daar is twee kategorieë waarvoor deelnemers kan inskryf. In die Sêgoed- kategorie kan enige talige skepping wat nuut, vars of onbekend is, ingeskryf word. Daar is elke maand ’n wenner en aan die einde van die jaar word Varsgebek se algehele wenner aangekondig. Daarvoor is daar ook ’n gewigtige prys op die spel. Daar is nog ’n kategorie, Kykgoed, waar grafiese voorstellings van bestaande of nuwe woorde en idiome ingestuur kan word. Dit kan ’n prent, foto, grafiese ontwerp, illustrasie, video of animasievideo wees, solank dit ’n eg Afrikaanse woord of uitdrukking uitbeeld. Enigiemand kan deelneem, maar ’n graad 11- of 12-leerder kan ’n studiebeurs van R150 000 in hierdie

kategorie wen. Skole en leerders word dus veral aangemoedig om hiervoor in te skryf. Inskrywings vind plaas op http://varsgebek.org. Koos se Overberg ...

Goeie lewe, goeie tye

ermanus, en die hele omgewing om Hermanus, het vir my vanaf my vroeë jeug ’n magiese bekoring gehad. Toe ek die eerste keer popmusiek soos dié van die Beach Boys gehoor het, het dit my laat dink aan Hermanus se strande. As hoërskoolseun het ek dikwels Hermanus toe geryloop met vriende, en eenmaal selfs die tog van Stellenbsoch af soontoe met my ou dikwielfiets afgetrap.

As jong skrywer het ek telkemale besoek afgelê in Onrusrivier en daar van die groot indoena’s van Afrikaanse letterkunde leer ken: Jan Rabie, Uys Krige, en ook André P. Brink wat soms daar kom kuier het. Later, toe ek met my musiektoere sou begin, het ek ’n meisie in Sandbaai gehad. Ek onthou hoe die vlermuise altyd so verby my gesig geswiep het as ek saans in die straatjies van daardie dorpie wandel.

Vandag het Hermanus skielik wakkergeword van ’n slaperige aftreedorpie by die see tot ’n moderne kulturele “hots-spot” in Suid-Afrika. Nie alleen is dit ’n hipergewilde toeristebestemming nie, maar die kunstefeeste van die omgewing het ook al hoe meer populêr en selfs toonaangewend begin word. Dis vir my een van die grootste plesiere om met my kinders daarheen te ry en vir hulle die walvisse te wys. Daar is ook deesdae voortreflike eetplekke om en naby die strande waar mens luilekker kan sit en ontspan met ’n bord vol vars seekos en ’n kraffie yskoue droeë wit wyn. Dit is waarmee ek die Overberg en sy wonderbaarlike kuste nog altyd assosieer: met die goeie lewe, met kwaliteit rusverposings, met goeie tye van smaak en lus. Dit is die soort omgewing waar mens waarlik tot jou sinne kan kom. Dis die soort plek waar jy digbundels op die sand kan sit en lees en jouself begewe op die talle wandelpaadjies wat oral oor die kranse kronkel. Hermanus is ’n ware lushof, ’n verkwikking van die siel. Ek kan nooit te lank wegbly van daardie plek nie! Koos Kombuis tree vanjaar weer op by die KalfieFees. Skinboosters

We’ve all heard of Skinboosters…we all think we know what that means, but Restylane skinboosters offer something a little different for long lasting skin rejuvenation. Die eerste Kalfiefees Wildekrans-Rotary MTB Adventure vind plaas op Sondag 7 Augustus 2016. Dit word georganiseer deur die Rotary Klub van Hermanus in samewerking met die welbekende Wildekrans Estate in Botrivier. Die opbrengs van die geleentheid sal uitsluitlik gebruik word vir die verdere ondersteuning van die liefdadigheidsorganisasies wat deur die Rotary Klub van Hermanus ondersteun word. Die doel van hierdie aktiwiteit is om ’n niete-mededingende bergfietsgeleentheid van 35 kilometer vir entoesiaste aan te bied. Die roete is ’n unieke roete op Wildekrans wat ’n ongelooflike pad deur die pragtige omgewing sal neem. Sekere dele van die roete is pasgemaak vir hierdie geleentheid en sal vir die eerste keer gebruik word. Twee verdere roetes van onderskeidelik 5km en 10 km word vir kinders aangebied sodat die jongelinge en ander familielede ook hulle vaardighede kan kom toets.
