’n Klein engelgesiggie gil en skree blou moord so twee rye van my af. Die man voor my lê basies op my skoot…

Elke slag as ’n ou klant deesdae instap voel dit of ’n verlore vriendin kom inval vir ’n kuiertjie. Ek gaan beslis my ‘buitelandse’ (dit sluit Gauteng in) besoeke tot ’n minimum beperk. My liewe Percy het uiteindelik die naelstring met Binnelanders geknip en julle gaan hom ook meer gereeld in die winkel sien. wrote for Splash Magazine many years ago. I wrote about taking chances – about defying the odds, the recession and negative sentiments… And buying a shop on a whim… And once again I’m taking a huge chance. I’d like to invite you to join me on this exciting, albeit slighly daunting journey… I’m planning a move to the old Synagogue. Ja, Ek’s ’n dapper muis… Verandering is altyd uitdagend. Blykbaar ook opwindend? Maar as jy in Afrika bly is dit onafwendbaar. Dis mos Afrikaans vir inevitable, of hoe? Hoe dit ookal sy… Trek gaan ek trek.

10 reasons why you owe your Dad a father’s day gift 1.
Because one day he will walk you down the isle, although he’d love to pick you up and run in the opposite direction. 2. Because you are at some point going to dent his car or you already have (as you turned a blind corner) and he turned a blind eye. 3. Because he had to get up in the middle of the night to find your tooth and play tooth fairy. Same goes for all the years that he had to dress up as Father Christmas even after everyone, including you, realised it was actually Daddy. 4. Because he drove 200 k’s when the car ran out of petrol in the middle of night. Okay your boyfriend at the time didn’t appreciate it that your Dad just took over and make him go fetch the petrol. But he’s long gone, like Daddy predicted. 5. Because he clumsily knotted his fingers, cursing under his breath as he had to make your pigtails (just the way Mommy does, Dad) when Mommy was ill. 6. His thumb nail has never been the same after he put up your home made mobile in the nursery. He still bears the scars of many a project he took up for your science/life skills projects. 7. Because he let you sit on his shoulders all night, completely missing the music concert himself. 8. Because he insisted on carrying your fridge up two flights of stairs on his own when you moved into your first apartment. 9. Because he built you the worst tree house because you wanted one and he couldn’t admit that he was not the world’s best carpenter. 10. Because… quite simply… you love the man. And you hope your son Splash_125x155_Grey.ai will one day grow up exactly like his granddad.

’N VERJAARSDAGLYSIE
VIR ’N STATIGE DAME
MET ’N ONDERROK WAT UITHANG
H
9. Ek gaan ‘n nuwe taal aanleer. Salani kahle! Winter AWAY Treatments: Many patients rush into the Clinic for procedures like Photofacials, Chemical Peels, Vein Removal and Lipodissolve once the weather gets nice. They realize they're going to be showing more skin and want that skin to be smooth and beautiful. In reality, the best time for treatments is the middle of winter when it's easy to either hide areas that are swollen as after a lipodissolve treatment, or avoid the sun on skin that has been treated with Laser, peels or Skin needling.
LINE AWAY: It's only natural to think about taking care of bothersome issues when they become obvious, but planning ahead and resolving these issues before they are obvious is a smarter choice. If you are thinking about any procedure including fillers and Botox, it's smart to plan ahead. It can often take two whole weeks for filler or Botox to settle in. In addition, procedures where we are promoting collagen production takes two to three weeks. If you are thinking of having any of these non-surgical procedures, make an appointment for a consultation and planning a schedule in time for an event such as a wedding or a reunion is best.
DRY, SCALY SKIN AWAY: Many people exfoliate all year round using light techniques such as enzymes or light chemical peels. Both have virtually no side effects, do not require anaesthetic, and are ideal for skin which is sensitive and can give skin a healthy-looking glow. Choosing to undergo stronger facial resurfacing which requires a week of at-home healing and limited exposure to UV rays is also easier. The early sunset, and layers of clothing during the winter naturally compliments the healing process. Guaranteed fresh, younger looking skin, increased collagen and sun damage free just in time to have the perfect glow for summer.
BEFORE
AFTER
Before and after Courtesy Refine Clinic, TCA Peel for Melasma
HAIR AWAY: Tanned skin may be resistant to many laser procedures, including the removal of unwanted hair. This is why we recommend you start your treatments in the winter months. Unwanted hair can make you feel unattractive and self-conscious about your appearance. Why not feel more confident by removing it? With our state-of-the art Palomar Starlux® system, you can rid yourself of unwanted hair. –in time for the bikini season. All Pain Controlled, thanks to the new technology cooling device.
VEIN AWAY: Wintertime is a popular time to have Sclerotherapy for the treatment of unwanted spider veins and varicose veins on the legs. The injection of “polidocanol” and other agents into visible varicose and spider veins causes those vessels to collapse, while compression helps prohibit veins from resorting to their original state. The procedure is painless; one just needs to book a one to two hour appointment. Don’t wait until skirts and dresses are back in season. “Many patients choose the fall and winter months to treat their spider veins. It’s well known that wearing compression hose after Sclerotherapy optimizes the outcome, and the veins tend to look worse, before they get better” notes Dr. Michelle Emett.
BEFORE
AFTER
JOWL AWAY: With our skin starting to feel the dehydrating effects of winter winds and cold, dry air, what’s a woman to do when one feels saggy and jowly? Jowls certainly are one of the main facial aging issues that lead people to seek a face lift. Now Aesthetic Medicine offers a far less invasive treatment. The “ONE_STITCH_MINI_LIFT” aka Silhouette Lift; is done under local anaesthetic in the doctors rooms. A stitch is inserted under the skin and skin lifted toward the ears. This procedure lasts 3-5 years and in many patients alleviates the knife all together. Sclerotherapy Results – Spider Veins 1
2
SUN DAMAGE AWAY: Many patients come to the clinic in order to rid themselves of those dark sun spots on their face, neck and arms. IPL (photofacials) for sunspot removal procedures both require that your skin be free of a tan. And to not expose the skin to the sun 2 weeks prior to treatment. In addition, the spots appear darker for the first few days after treatment, and the patient will have to cover up with foundation. The skin can also be a bit sensitive and red for a day or 2.
3
1. Before IPL treatment 2. Two days after treatment 3. One week after treatment
10 YEARS AWAY: Wondering where all that collagen went? As we age, our skin’s ability to produce collagen diminishes, and depending on our lifestyle proclivities, from too much sunning to unhealthy habits like smoking or poor diet, collagen breakdown can leave us looking much older than our years. CIT which is the process that naturally stimulates collagen and elastin production in the skin without damaging it. CIT stimulates the body’s own natural production of collagen, thereby reducing wrinkles and improving skin texture. Skin Needling like the Dermapen or Dermaroller , as well as the Non- Ablative Fractionated Laser, is very successful in treating scars, wrinkles and uneven texture. These treatments can leave the skin red for 2-3 days. And is a perfect winter treat, when we are mostly all in hiding.
So in conclusion, although we dread those winter blues and cold; Mother Nature offers us this unique time to cosy up to our therapists and get treatments recommended only for winter while the sun is not as strong. Book your aesthetic consultation with Lindi or Michelle today.

SPLASH 9
Thrill of
the Grill
I know you may not like what I am about to say; but I am going to say it anyway! The braai is so unpredictable - the kids are starving, the Mums are getting tipsy “making salad in the kitchen” and the Dad’s say: “The fire is almost ready to braai”. I can hear all my girlfriends sigh collectively that “it is school tomorrow, we need to get the kids to bed” This is exactly why I will be buying our Daddy a skillet Grill this Father’s Day. One of the main advantages of grilling meat is that it cooks super-fast – a steak can be cooked to perfection in just 10 minutes, tender and juicy inside yet with tasty, crispy grill marks on the outside. Getting home late form work, and usually juggling homework and cooking our family operate at a wild pace. So, being able to whip up a gourmet meal like seared steak with a crunchy green salad in under 15 minutes is a mean feat. I love the fact that grilling is a healthier way to cook, too: the ridges on the base of the pan distribute the heat evenly and allow fat to drain away from the meat, and the handy spout on the side of the pan lets you pour off this excess fat- which you of course keep aside and turn into a delicious rich gravy. A handy tip: Pat meat dry with paper towel before you cook it. If meat is moist it tends to steam instead of searing and you won’t get that outside crispness that is so delicious. I coat my meat with coarsely ground black pepper & salt as well as cracked coriander

seeds - I find this combination makes a delicious crust that contrasts beautifully with the tender meat on the inside. Other favourites in our house are grilled whole line-fish as well as vegetables, we like thickly sliced aubergine, and we’ve also found that grilling is a great way to turn summer fruit – like pears, plums or nectarines – into a delicious dessert. Simply halve the fruit and remove the pips or seeds. Place them cut side down on the hot grill and cook for about 3 minutes a side until they have beautiful grill marks and have started to caramelise. Serve warm with homemade vanilla ice cream. Le Creuset makes square and round grill pans, as well as larger rectangular ones, and you can cook on any heat source, from gas, electric and ceramic stoves to induction hobs. You can even use them in the oven and under the grill. The cast-iron is fully vitrified, which seals it completely, making it very hygienic and ensuring there is no flavour transfer the next time you use the pan. And they are so durable that Le Creuset gives them a lifetime warranty. What’s not to love? By the way, I still love Dad’s Braai - which has now become a family affair, reserved for leisurely weekends. Our boys help out, producing a roaring fire, stoked for hours before we get the meat near the grill! Here are 3 more reasons why we love preparing gourmet food in the skillet? FLAVOUR The Le Creuset square skillet grill gives all the delicious flavour of an outdoor grill, with all the convenience of indoor cooking.
Exclusive Discount Voucher from Goozi The Kitchenshop:
HEALTHY COOKING The high ridges allow excess fat and grease to drain, and spouts on two sides allow for drip-free pours. You will be able to keep all those New Year’s resolutions without compromising on taste!
Purchase a pan + Scanpan Knife of your choice and get 30% off the knife + FREE 250ml bottle of flavoured Willow Creek olive oil.
DURABLE AND LONG LASTING Setting the new signature grill apart is its loop handle, added for extra stability when lifting a full pan. All the Le Creuset Grill’s interiors are coated with Le Creuset’s protective satin black finish to prevent damage and wear. Over time, this slightly abrasive interior develops a natural patina that is ideal for searing and frying.

For brandy and grappa tasting,
My name is GiGi and I am the winner of Celebrity Survivor Sante Carolina in 2010. I am passionate about the Overberg. When my dad was still alive, Franskraal used to be his favourite camping site. I can now say that I am a proud resident of Franskraal, and love to visit the Sir Robert Stanford Estate on Sunday afternoons. The distillery was closed for four years, and myself and business partner Mike Crole approached Jan Malan, the owner, and we asked him if is it possible to resurrect the distillery to its former glory. The history of the Sir Robert Stanford Estate is magical and The Hansom red wine is of exceptional quality. It is an honour for Mike and I to be a part of this history and to work in a building that is over a hundred years old. We have put together a great all girl team and after doing an extensive course of distilling with Prof. Loftie Ellis, we were proud to taste our first brandy and grappa in the beginning of March. We therefore invite everybody to come and experience the rebirth of the old Stookhuis, where you will be able to taste our exotic grappa cocktails. Listen to great music from our local artists, and enjoy the sunset with the most spectacular views from the Sir Robert Stanford Estate. See you there, GiGi.

Who were the two Giants of SA Rugby and what did they do to earn the status of giantdom which I have given to them? The first overseas side to tour SA was the England and Scotland team in 1891 with Bill MacLagan captaining the side. It’s quite interesting to note that the Prime Minister of the Cape Colony at the time said that he would stand in for any possible financial loss of the tour. Of course, he was nobody else than Cecil John Rhodes! They also played a match at Stellenbosch against Stellenbosch. Oubaas Mark (AF Markötter) was number one of the two giants. He was the backbone of Rugby on the field over the first 45 years of the 20th century. He was the selector of the first ever SA side to leave SA on an overseas tour to Brittain. He selected Paul Roos as the first Captain of this side and when the media asked Paul Roos what the team should be called, he said that they should be called “ De Springbokken” - a happy choice soon to be called “Springbokke” or Springboks at a later stage. Hy was voorwaar baie eksentriek en uiters uniek.
Dawie Snyman.

The Will the Poison and the
Famous Cricketer There’s a lot that we can learn from history and from the examples of others. In the sad saga of famous cricketer Tertius Bosch and his family, the relevant lessons are around estate planning and his will. And of course the money he left behind, which was at the centre of several court cases, rumours about affairs and allegations of poisoning.
After years as a wealth manager, I really have come to the conclusion that the last act of love you can show your family is to have your will and financial affairs in order. Having a will that works and having your financial affairs in order leads to a successful estate plan. A good will is not just about saving taxes. Yes, there can be considerable tax savings by giving attention to these matters, but it is also about your loved ones knowing that you paid attention to their needs and requirements as best you could. I’ve come across ambiguous, hastily drafted wills that are almost impossible for executors to follow. Or wills that are so out of date, that they cause another set of complications.
Tertius Bosch had a complicated situation. If he had met with a professional
wealth manager to redraft his will, years of uncertainty, costs and legal bickering could have been avoided - and I’m sure a big chunk of taxes could have been saved as well. Whether your finances are complex or not, you owe it to your family to sit down with your adviser and check that your will, and perhaps your trust, is designed to achieve your intentions. Your adviser will calculate what will happen when you pass on, leaving you with far less uncertainty. Death taxes can be crippling to any estate. These potentially include: Estate Duty, Capital Gains Tax, Income Tax and possibly Transfer Duty. All need to be considered to create a good, efficient will. At the first Hermanus Investors Society we will be exploring tips and pitfalls in estate planning, wills and trusts. These events are designed to help the public gain critical knowledge. At our event at the Marine Hotel on 22 June, we will explore the lessons from the Bosch family saga, understand how to achieve death tax savings and explore the benefits and drawbacks of trusts, among other things. Our aim is to have an interactive evening with questions from the audience. A panel of experts will be ready to answer your questions.
Janet Hugo is a Certified Financial Planner®, Investment Manager and Estate Planner, with Sterling Private Wealth of Hermanus. Please contact us if you would like us to cover a wealth management or financial planning topic at future events. janet@sterlingwealth.co.za

A SIMPLE JOY
by elmarie
de waal
It is in the midst of a business meeting where my mind slips away for a second and I become aware of my surroundings. It’s misty outside but the beauty of the ever- changing ocean in front of me becomes a painting in blues. How lucky am I to sit here and observe this; but it’s not the blue ocean that warms my heart but the aroma of a steaming pot of ginger tea, presented in a glass teapot. Sipping slowly on the tea I become fascinated with the whole tea-drinking experience.
I
’m a coffee drinker at heart. One of the highlights of the day is my cappuccino at the Beanery. The girls know exactly how I like it; hot and strong with honey. With my coffee comes a quick chat among the little family of coffee drinkers. This is when each day’s passage gets celebrated and reinforces my sense that I am in the right place at the right time. How easy one can let certain things pass you by because it’s simply not part of your routine. But when we focus on the beauty of an experience, it becomes a new joy. Even a simple thing like taking tea. The custom originated amongst the wealthy class in England. Charles II’s wife Catherine is often credited with introducing tea to the court upon her arrival in 1662. The table was laid with luxurious fancy pastries and cakes served in delicate china in the late afternoon. She was copied by high society across England and later Europe. But it was Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, who was the real creator of teatime because of her “sinking feeling” at four o’clock in the afternoon. The etiquette of the rising pinkie, was not an English high society manner but a very practical one. Originally all porcelain teacups were made in China, with no handles. In order for one not to spill the hot tea, the proper way to hold the cup was to place one’s thumb at six o’clock and one’s index and middle finger at twelve o’clock
Elmarie : 083 261 16 028 316 59 3834
position while gently raising the pinkie up for balance. Invitation to high tea in society was also seen as a symbol of rite of passage for young men and women. A minor initiation rite to adulthood. In China, long before tea become a beverage, it was a general health tonic. Visiting teahouses soon became a daily ritual for most people. Many believe that Japan was where tea met perfection in the art of Cha-no-yu (Japanese tea ceremony). The essence of tea the ceremony a reflection on life. Cha-ya, the Indian chai tea, is a strong black tea, spiced with cardamom, fennel, and cloves, sweetened with sugar and mixed with milk. A recognized symbol of Russian hospitality is their tscheinik, a strongly brewed concentrated tea. In Egypt strong black tea is served in a small glass and heavily sweetened. Morocco is known for its mint tea, as a natural digestive before and after meals. A Salon de the, in Franc is a quiet and serene place for relaxation and camellia tea has a strong foothold there, drunk out of sophisticated
porcelain and in an elegant setting. I just love the girlishness of tea drinking, the beautiful cups, teapots and other accessories on a tea table. I am inspired to invite my girlfriend for tea and make a fancy ritual out of this simple joy. Why not have high tea in your own home, pretend to be high society? The deli at the Eatery, offers plenty of yummy tea biscuits and cakes and the flower posy is from The Flower Scene. The Small Gallery have beautiful table cloths, vintage and new.
