Hi Splash Readers
Refine - Anti-aging on the French Riviera
On 16 June 2016 we remember the power of SA's younger generation. We celebrate the students who defended their right to equal education, and we commemorate those who lost their lives in the struggle to make South Africa a better place for all and generations to come.

F lying Extravaganza Saturday 30th April to Monday 2nd May 2016 This event was held with the help and blessing of the South African Model Aircraft Association. SAMAA are the national controlling body for all model aircraft activities. The international guest pilots stunned the crowds with amazing aircraft and incredible flying skills. Martin Pickering, 4 times Spanish Aerobatic Champion and 4th in Europe, flying a Pilot 330 SC performed maneuvers that were extremely graceful and close to impossible. The Reds Duo Formation Team from Shropshire in the UK then gave a display. Steven Bishop and son Matthew fly quarter-scale replicas of the BA Hawk 22 jet aircraft as flown by the RAF Red Arrows aerobatic team. Tony Tan (co-owner and president of Pilot RC) from China and Fergus Lin (owner of GP Model Engines) from Taiwan provided the two Pilot 330 SC aircraft powered by GP engines that were used over the 3 days. Fergus Lin gave a truly spectacular show. Not to be outdone, SA pilots from Cerebus (Pilot RC Dealer) showed their skills. WBRF members Eddie Bell did a helicopter sweetie drop for the children and Louis Genade from Hobbyland gave an impressive display with his Breitling Extra 330 aircraft. In the evening, illuminated planes took to the sky and an impressive pyrotechnic show entertained the crowd. SABC News covered the event and was shown in all Monday evening bulletins. Well done Walker Bay Radio Flyers, thanks to all the sponsors for your generosity and help and to all the visiting RC pilots who entertained and enthralled us. Working together to boost our local economy The Hermanus Business Chamber is inviting all local business people to come on board and share in the benefits of membership. They hold regular networking sessions where businesses can introduce themselves and network amongst each other. A successful business breakfast was held on 12 May at Fisherman’s Cottage. Economic issues which affect us all are also being addressed regularly. The next meeting will be held on 14th July. During June the Chamber will encourage businesses to participate in FynArts and act as hospitable tour guides towards visitors from afar.
“Chambers try to offer opportunities to businesses,” says CEO Alta Pretorius.”We provide networking opportunities and represent local business needs at high level, acting as their Voice of Business! The main aims are Networking, Representation, Assistance and Business Development Opportunities. The Chamber managed to attract top national role players to Hermanus to address our members in the past, such as Minister Rob Davies, Premier Helen Zille, Economist Dawie Roodt and Minister Alan Winde. We strive to make your voice heard and bring you into contact with crucial role players and decision makers.” “The Chamber has been revitalized by appointing new Executive Committee members from various business sectors, and we are considering co-opting even more, so that the portfolios will cover all crucial business sectors which our members form part of” Executive Committee members are: Seth Anderson, Bobby von During, Bevan Newton

Johnson, Jeanette du Toit, Rick Oosthuizen, Liza van Coppenhagen, Anton Verhoogt, Anneke Otto with CEO Alta Pretorius Last Thursday the Exco held a brainstorming session with Frieda Lloyd, manager of Overstrand Tourism, to discuss ways of working together in future, and attracting more visitors from elsewhere. “A greater awareness must be created of what Hermanus has to offer,” says Frieda,” so that the tour buses don’t just drive through, but linger and experience the wine route, cuisine , adventures such as kayaking and tree-top sliding, as well as our beautiful Fernkloof Botanical Gardens and Cliff Path. Business people and restaurants must also do their share to let people stay instead of moving through.” New members can do a presentation to the Executive Committee to consider for sharing with the business network. Two of these new members are CEM cupboards, who also source international funding for worthy business causes, (they
managed to get funding for the Pantheria Wild Cat Sanctuary in Stanford). They are also offering a unique Loyalty Cash Back Card to support local businesses. St. James Global Investments has also joined and offers advice on international investments, and the risks of losing foreign investment income due to pending new legislation which will soon be approved. Proposals for future meetings are currently being considered, including: • Another networking session where new members can do a presentation to attending businesses. Other businesses will also get an opportunity to introduce themselves to the rest. • Accountability in the Overstrand: giving a platform to representatives from all political parties in the Overstrand to inform us of their plans and intentions regarding economic development – before the municipal election. • Annual General Meeting where more relevant people will be co-opted to the Executive Committee, plus address by the newly elected

mile grumpy
By: Helené Truter
whether you like it or not
I
love the cold. Oh yes, I do. Overseas visitors travel halfway round the world to visit sunny South Africa during our summer months and shamelessly expose their pink bellies and pale legs to the unrelenting African sun. I, on the other hand, hide inside, cursing the heat wave, icy fans blazing full-blast. Some people thrive in the heat. I ain’t one of them. My brain, body and sense of humour first melt and then evaporate. Cold is cool, man. Not difficult to ascertain that my forefathers hail from the cold northern regions of the globe. Not that I have any desire to move to these icy areas, certainly not permanently. Nor do I want to emigrate to Australia where many ex-pats braai every week end and display their collection of South African memorabilia on their new Aussie walls and plan their next trip back home. I’ve always looked for the silver lining. And yes, nowadays it’s hard to find, but I’m grimly determined -there’s always something to be positive about. Lately I’ve sensed that people are not all that keen to hear how wonderful life could be if only you changed your attitude. As I waffle on about all my blessings and the good stuff, I can see the tannie can’t wait for me to take a breather so that she can burst my bubble and tell me some horror story about crime or how everything in this country is going to the dogs... I simply just turn up the music in the shop. Consider what sells newspapers... and gossip magazines. We have a morbid fascination with another human being’s misery. And the bigger the fall from grace, the better. We are a despicable bunch. But of course there are many exceptions... And those are the people I am drawn to. And luckily many of them pop into Amulet on a regular basis. And just as I try and uplift their spirits, they return the favour and mostly a day spent in my shop, is a day spent in a happy place. And if anyone is actually interested in some good news, I have finally been given the go-ahead by the SABC to write the followup to Swartwater, my Afrikaans TV drama series that was screened a year or so ago on SABC2. Jippieeee! Of course now I’m stressing about deadlines and the like, but I have to follow my own advice and concentrate on the positives. And if in doubt, have a sense of humour. About everything. Even old age is funny. And I am allowed to say that because last year my first (laughable) monthly pension payment started paying out. Yes, I am that old, I just act like I’m a youngster. Now that my daughter has left the nest to further her studies, Percy and I rattle around in our house, constantly trying to find each other. Not because the place is that big, but because our hearing has deteriorated to such an extent that we can easily spend several hours a day having nonsensical conversations: “What?! Huh? Did you call me? Huh? Waar is jy? Huh? Did you say something? What? Huh?” I suppose you could hardly call that a conversation. At least we’re talking. Luckily we have a diligent Yorkie that barks at everything that moves, otherwise we would never know that someone has been waiting outside at the gate ringing the bell. (Which doesn’t work by the way – and replacing it is pointless, as most of the time we can’t hear the damn thing anyway). Funny how appliances all decide to give up the ghost at the same time. It’s as if they have some secret pact to drive humans crazy. Our fridge/freezer grunts, snorts and wheezes like an old man and the ice cream is more cream than ice... Who eats ice cream in winter you may ask? Percy does. And if he doesn’t get his daily dose, he’s a grumpy man. Hard-ofhearing is bad enough. Add grumpy to the mix = Impossible to live with. Then there’s the mini geyser in the kitchen which hasn’t worked for months now, Percy needs to (literally)
kick-start his computer every morning (I’m afraid assault charges may be laid) and more recently the stove gave one final heave, spurt and then ran out of gas. (Leaving us with very runny eggs for breakfast. “No, not funny eggs, darling. Runny eggs!... Huh? What?... Nevermind. Have some ice cream.”

“Huh?
Niks fout met my hande! Huh?... Ek sê ek praat nie nou... Waar is jy? Hier bo... Agter my rekenaar. Wie’s die wewenaar?"... Miskien moet ek Percy instuur vir ’n diens. ‘Ek hoor jou!’ sê hy skielik reg agter my. Selektiewe gehoor noem hulle dit. Mans veral lei aan die besondere kwaal. En dit herhinner my, gelukkige Vadersdag liefie... Ek stick jou vir ’n roomys. Skitterend! ☺

BRUCE
LITTLE
Lidi
SOLO UITSTALLING
Self-taught, instinctual, Bruce Little sculpts to capture the spirit of the wild African creatures he has observed and guarded for most of his life. His technique captures the essential movement and attitudes of his subjects. Born in South Africa, Bruce developed an early passion for the African wilderness through his childhood spent in the bushveld. He became a conservationist and professional game ranger, working at famous private game reserves. For the past 19 years Bruce has worked on sculpting his subjects by focusing less on strict anatomical correctness but more on capturing the deeper meaning of the animals he observes. Bruce says “it is natural for every artist to grow and evolve in one’s artistic journey” and as a result he has started sculpting a series of pieces with a contemporary aspect, which he feels portrays the animals in a different light but still encompasses the essence of the animals surroundings, spirit and behaviour. Bruce, whose sculptures range from miniatures to life size, has exhibited internationally for the last 11 years with his bronzes. His latest project was a Monumental Lion (4.8m x 8m) for the 50th anniversary of Longleat Safari & Adventure Park in the UK. Anti-Aging on the
French Riviera I was fortunate enough to be once again invited to the very exclusive AMWC (Aesthetic Medicine World Congress) 2016 in Monaco; held under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II. An overwhelming three day event hosting 10,000 doctors from around the world, who are seeking rare pearls of wisdom from Aesthetic Medicines’, top minds. This year the theme was Prevention and we looked to the guru’s from USA to shed light on the way they practice Aesthetic Medicine in the US. Procedures, technologies, tips and secrets were shared. It is always difficult to summarise such a huge amount of information but herein lie some of the highlights of the congress and what we can look forward to seeing at Refine Clinic.
PROFILOPLASTY
The buzzword for 2016 in Aesthetics is profiloplasty. A literal translation is moulding the profile of the patient’s face. A reminder for us doctors, to show the patient their profile and treat the profile. By assisting the patient with photos, doctors should also suggest which treatments will improve the nose, forehead and chin for the patient. Some people with overbites have retracted chins, while a woman whose jaw has shrunk may have a shortened chin. These can be lengthened or projected with dermal filler. A crooked or hooked nose is quickly and easily remedied with filler to the bridge of the nose. The nose can be flattened, straightened or sharpened in 20 minutes in the doctor’s rooms.
GYNAE REJUVENATION
A topic that is often thought about, often plagues post-menopausal women, but not often addressed by doctors and certainly until recently we had no non-invasive anti-aging treatments to offer the patients. Gynae rejuvenation has suddenly taken off in a big way. Not only can we offer patient natural hormone creams instead of chemical hormones; but we can now anatomically shape and rejuvenate a women’s genital area. We use filler to reshape a deflated and bulky labia. Bipolar radiofrequency is used extensively to tighten the entrance and stimulate collagen which further tightens and rejuvenates. So much so, that it is even used in mild forms of bladder incontinence as treatment as opposed to surgery.
COMBINATION THERAPIES
Combination treatments topped the list of best prevention for aging. At Refine Anti-aging Clinic we always practiced combining aesthetic and skin rejuvenation treatments to ensure best results. After the congress we now have the studies proving this philosophy. Peelings are used for deep skin rejuvenation in combination with intense pulsed light (IPL) for superficial lightening and brightening of red veins, pigmentation and brown spots. This procedure which we have been doing for years now has a medical name attached to it….”Photo-Peel Technique”. The benefits of the multimodal approach, is that with synergism less is required from each treatment and the peak effect of treatment is prolonged. Other examples of this include fanning with a bio-stimulating filler (Ellanse) before doing a thread lift, to stimulate collagen and enhance lift and Botox before resurfacing peels or laser to guarantee better results. All in all the congress was a phenomenal success. Did we come away with anything new? Sure we learnt plenty, but mostly gained reassurance that we are already following sound treatment protocols and still have the latest technologies in our clinic.
AESTHETICS FOR MEN
Statistics show that men represent around 7% of an Aesthetic/Anti-aging practice. This number is growing steadily by 1% each year. Men seeking treatments know exactly what they want. Where women want to look more youthful, men seem to want to look a healthier version of themselves. The most bothersome areas for a man according to the study, included hair loss, dark circles under the eyes, area under chin and crow’s feet (eye area).
Dr Michelle Emett Refine Hermanus
The anatomical differences of the face in a man versus a women were highlighted with reference to using dermal fillers. In a man the doctor uses more straight angles and geometric shape. A strong jawline, chiselled chin and flattened brow line. The nose would be more defined, cheeks lifted in a more linear fashion. Now men can safely visit their aesthetic physician without fear of feminisation. See Longevity May 2016 for more information.

MICROBLADING EYEBROWS 3D Hairstroke Brows/Microblading / Microstroking is a less invasive form of permanent makeup. This method is ideal for anyone wanting to enhance the look of their eyebrows. This technique allows me to create crisp, fine hairstrokes that fill in thin brows, brows with bald spots, total brow reconstruction and even alopecia. Imagine waking up to perfectly groomed eyebrows .The results are the most natural looking hairlike strokes, regardless of the amount of hair present. The pigments used in this method have been formulated to match your original eyebrow colour, and if the eyebrows are still present, blend perfectly into them. This technique lasts up to 1-3 years. Ideal for all skin tones.

BECOME A
PROACTIVE QUITTER! My name is Michelle and I am a quitter!
Q
uitting most things to me is normally not an option, but in May 2015 I made a drastic change for the better as far as my health was concerned, I quit smoking. I have been a smoker on and off for years, the two other times I quit was when I was pregnant, so I did not quit for me, I quit for the health of my unborn baby. So I eventually went back to smoking again. This is the first time I quit for me and it was my decision, no one else’s or no one else’s pressure. Quitting smoking is not an easy thing to do especially if someone else in your household smokes and all your friends smoke. It has to be your decision and you have to really want to and I did. As a personal trainer and Pilates instructor at Proactive Fitness, I was embarrassed that I was a smoker and I hid it as much as I could, especially as I was living a very healthy lifestyle other than for the smoking, I knew it was bad for me having been bombarded by information on all the relevant health issues that can arise from smoking, but even though I knew the dangers I really didn’t care. Show a smoker a gruesome picture of what happens to internal organs from smoking and really it doesn’t have much of an effect. Having people moan at you and go on and on about you smoking and how you should give up makes a smoker go light one up immediately when they probably had not even thought about one. Tell a smoker they cannot smoke and they will dig their heels in more. How did I give up? Well once I decided I was definitely going to give up, I set a date. I found a friend who also wanted to give up so that we could support each other. I decided not to go the chemical route and put other substances into my body to help me quit so I sought the help of a hypnotherapist, who spoke to my subconscious and made suggestions. Hypnotherapy was effective for me as I was determined to give up but just wanted a little help, my stubbornness and perseverance did the rest as there were times that I had thoughts about having a cigarette but just as quickly as the thought came it disappeared. So to date I have been tobacco free for a year, it’s a great feeling of freedom, and I hated having dependency over a little white stick and it having power over me and my willpower. So why am I writing this article? Well I am here to let those who also want to be quitters give up, if you want my help, I am here to lean on in more ways than one. I want you to change your life around and not just give up but get fit and healthy ……. At Proactive we have a team of people willing to help you, there is an in house Nutritionist (Adel Pretorius -“Hermanus Nutrition Clinic”) to help with the food part of things as everyone gains weight when they give up smoking, we have a Beauty therapist (Tanya Kirsten -“The Treatment Room”) who can help with detoxing treatments. I want people who want to give up to know they are not alone I will be there to give all the support that is needed. To help find a process that best suits each individual give up, whether it be through Hypnotherapy, or via the use of Champax or Zyban or whatever other way you as an individual want to try. I am not here to judge, I am not here to dictate that you have to give up and I am not here to scold, I am here to positively enforce each day you go without a cigarette.
SOME NUTRITIONAL QUITTING ADVICE FROM ADEL One of the hardest stimulants to quit is cigarettes. They contain sixteen cancer-producing chemicals in addition to nicotine, the primary stimulant, which is more addictive than heroin and produces a substantial effect even in small doses. In large amounts, it acts as a sedative. Nicotine can give you a lift, on the other hand, it can calm you down. Before a meal it can stop you feeling hungry and after a meal it can stop you feeling drowsy. AII of these effects are due to nicotine’s action on adrenal hormones, blood sugar and brain chemicals. By strictly following a stimulant-free diet, eating slow-releasing carbohydrate foods, plus vitamins and minerals, the craving for cigarettes diminishes directly as a consequence of stabilizing your blood sugar and hormone levels. The average smoker is not only addicted to nicotine, but is also addicted to smoking when tired, hungry or upset, on waking, after a meal, with a drink and so on. It is best to break habits prior to quitting but it is never too late. The withdrawal effects from nicotine are a direct effect of its action on your blood sugar, adrenal hormone levels and key chemicals in the brain. It is incredibly helpful to follow a really good nutritional program during the first month after quitting. Make sure you always have a good breakfast, lunch and dinner. Since nicotine is a powerful adrenal stimulant and inability to cope with stress are common symptoms. For a more targeted plan and nutritional support to stop smoking, contact: Adel @ the Hermanus Nutrition Clinic 084 515 0208.
So when and if you are ready call Proactive Fitness (028 3132074) and make an appointment to come chat ….. Make that first step…. And let’s take it from there ….. BE PROUD TO BE A QUITTER @ Proactive Fitness

Nobody wants political interference in the selection of a Springbok side, but the question is whether it is justifiable or not? We are living in a new South Africa and in creating a new SA for our children and grand children to live in we MUST act responsibly. Now how would that be? With this as a reality in SA, the politics will be out of the way. Participants at senior level should be represented. If you want to see more of a representation of a specific group op people be it
white, black or brown, you must grow their basis of participation in rugby and that is it. If that is the philosophy of SARU and we still find political interference then and only then we will have arguments of substance to put on the table for discussion with the politicians. The question is, how far have we gone down this road? This is a SARU road of development and I do not think there is a strategy or plan in place. But let us get back to the field, because that is where we want to be. In and around the game. The season has been an up and down affair for the SA teams. The Lions and Sharks seem to be the most consistent teams in the competition. Johan Ackerman’s men in Johannesburg, bar one match, do the basic fundamentals of the game justice and the results are talking for themselves.
In preparing for selection, I want to remind you of the main frame of selection that I mentioned last year. Kickers A and B first. Then the positions of 1, 2 and 3 followed by 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 and last but not least 15. Once I have done that, I will sit down and count the number of players of colour to enable me to do justice to the expectations of the people of SA. From there on the picture is not that difficult. Remember, the reason for this method of selection is and will be for all teams, and must always be, to select a team that can win the match.

Ek is ‘n somer mens in murg en been.

Hallo almal
Kontak my gerus by amandad@vva.atkv.org.za. Mooi loop!

Hermanus - Arts Mecca of the Western Cape By Alta Pretorius
“Hermanus has already become the Arts Mecca of the Western Cape,” says Terry Kobus, owner of Originals Art Gallery and well-known for his initiatives to put Hermanus on the map. His Arts Amble Map initiated almost six years ago was the forerunner of the current Hermanus First Fridays Art Walk. The idea is to give exposure to galleries within walking distance of each other in the heart of town, whilst providing a unique art experience for tourists, locals and their visitors, browsing between Harbour, High and Main streets. The Art Walk through 16 Galleries has become very popular, reflecting no less than 500 artists, 4 000 paintings and 250 sculptures and ceramics. Maps are available at all participating galleries. Enquiries from Terry Kobus at 0832598869. “We are similar to Clarens in the Free State,” says Kobus. “Certain demographics attract a selection of artists and art lovers to these areas. The incredible beauty and temperate climate of Hermanus resulted in artists gravitating here – serious professional artists, as well as retired people who have been inspired to take up the art brush.” “It’s not about individuals. Artists are a collective group of sensitive, highly creative people whose fire needs to be fuelled, and they rely on the creative spirit around them to be pushed out of their box and beyond boundaries.” “There is power in numbers, and marketing is much more affordable when the cost is divided amongst a grouping of artists. We love Hermanus and want to stay here, but we rely on local people to bring their visitors to the art galleries for a unique and enjoyable art experience. Please assist us in promoting Hermanus as the Art Mekka of the Western Cape.” Kobus says the general standard of art in Hermanus is very high. After visiting the Art Fair in Cape Town on 19th February, he is convinced that our art compares favourably to art works exhibited there from all over Africa. Affordability is a problem though, since it costs around R50 000 for a 2 x 2 meters stall. He has been part of the Arts Portfolio of the Hermanus Tourism Bureau since it was established about six years ago. Liz Coates is currently the chairperson. They are very excited about the FynArts festival coming up in June. Coates already has 31 ceramic artists lined up. FynArts will be a visual showcase for the art galleries, combined with fascinating courses and talks.
Hermanus FynArts Festival 10 – 19 June 2016 The focus for the fourth Hermanus FynArts will once again be the visual arts, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewellery and the art of thread, as well as a programme of concerts, talks, workshops, demonstrations, gourmet dinners, food and wine pairings and vintage films. South African Louis Jansen van Vuuren, who owns La Creuzette château in the French countryside, is the 2016 FynArts festival artist-in-residence. Louis and his partner, chef Hardy Olivier, will offer a wide-ranging and interactive programme of events. Sculpture on the Cliffs at Gearing's Point will feature work by four artists who have previously been part of this FynArts signature exhibition. Jaco Sieberhagen, Gordon Froud, Strijdom van der Merwe and Guy du Toit have each invited a sculptor of his choice to join. Jaco Sieberhagen, who managed the project for the first two years, will assist a curating team who took on the project this year with technical advice. Most galleries in town are participating with a special exhibition. In addition, Pure South will host an interesting workshop on the opening weekend, and Walkerbay Art Gallery will host a compelling talk. Details will be announced in the final programme. A bumper ceramic exhibition with 32 artists, curated by Liz Coates, will be held at the Windsor Hotel; and a jewellery exhibition at the Marine, curated by Geta Finlayson. Workshops on these and other art forms will once again be part and parcel of the Hermanus FynArts experience. Hermanus FynArts 2016 will again feature the unique Tondo art competition. Artists are invited to enter and compete for the Tollman Bouchard Finlayson Art Award. The theme for this year’s competition is Terroir. The first prize is R20 000, the second prize R10 000 and there are two merit awards of R5 000 each. Details and entry forms, as well as the FynArts programme available on www.hermanusfynarts.co.za. Hermanus FynArts tickets are available through webtickets or from the Hermanus Tourism Bureau (028 312 2629). For enquiries contact: Festival Director Mary Faure at fynarts@hermanus.co.za SPLASH 23
What's happening @ the galleries?
All participating galleries present a special exhibition for the FynArts Festival. The number of gallery exhibitions has extended to include two galleries in the Hemel en Aarde village, and there are two exhibitions in Onrus one in a gallery, the other in a private home.
Venue: Abalone Art Gallery Nel Erasmus A French Connection - Abstraction into Motion After studying in Johannesburg, Nel Erasmus (1928) lived in France from 1953 to 1955. Following WWII new ideas flourished. In Paris, the abstract movement was in full swing. Nel participated and absorbed as reflected in her artworks throughout her painting career. Many solo exhibitions, as well as retrospectives, followed. “The need to simplify runs deep with me: to really see, I have to simplify.” Nel’s themes of horses and birds in movement, flowers, bodies and urns always reflect this need.
Venue: Daniël Kok Gallery Anastasia Sarantinou Bedtime Stories Anastasia’s latest exhibition showcases a variety of subjects mainly used as symbolism to portray a deeper meaning. Says Anastasia: “as children we naively acquire fears that we must overcome through life experience proving that the only thing to fear throughout life is fear itself.” 28
The artist uses this theme to portray fears, hopes, aspirations and dreams. The symbolism does not reflect on the artist personally, but is used in a manner that the viewer can relate to it.
Venue: Forty x 40 Gallery Christa Clark Changing Faces Christa is well known for her dramatic portraits. Her paintings are varied, ranging from detailed studies to free and spontaneous intuitive work. Using both acrylics and oils she relishes the journey of discovery in every new face. Christa experiences a sense of connectedness to people and animals through her portraits.
Venue: Lembu Ed Bredenkamp Monochrome Edward is best known for his vibrant ‘red elephant’ paintings but for this exhibition he is presenting a series of drawings on rice paper. Using earth-toned oil pencils as his medium, Edward works with the texture of the paper to create striking animal and human portraits.
Venue: Charmaine De Jongh Gelderblom Gallery Charmaine De Jongh Gelderblom Art with Passion The sensuousness of colour intrigues … the excitement of colour surprises … pure joy! Art making involves skills that can be learned, which make your work personal, and in following your own voice, make you work distinctive. Charmaine’s paintings, known for their vibrant colours and bold brush strokes, reflect an abundance of energy and joy, a true reflection of her personality. SPLASH 24
Venue: Malcolm Bowling Gallery Boniface Chikwenhere, Malcolm Bowling and Richard Pullen Natural selections in paint, pencil, clay and wood An inspirational journey into the wild by three artists from different disciplines - sculpture, paintings, graphite and clay; 2- and 3-dimensional form spanning natural and classical works that unite each artist’s journey and passion. Boniface Chikwenhere creates sculptures using driftwood, found-wood and fossilized/petrified wood to create one-of-a kind art sculptures that reveal nature’s own handiwork.
29
Malcolm Bowling currently focusses primarily on painting wildlife and birds encompassing texture and realism. Richard Pullen, for this exhibition, has selected work that documents his explorations of surface texture.
Venue: Mission’s House Gallery, De Villiers Street, Onrus Bill Davis, David Clarke-Brown and Tineke Meijer Something Old, Something New The Mission’s House Gallery has always tried to feature local, well-known, South African artists as well as supporting and promoting unknown, up and coming youngsters. This year will be no different. A few of the featuring artists will be on site to discuss their work.
Venue: Originals Danny Myburgh and Terry Kobus Crossings Both artists work on up-cycled materials as they explore the circumstances of present day migrants and refugees. The war in Syria has created emotional, political and logistical issues in Europe. The refugee crisis is the worst humanitarian displacement crisis since World War 2. South Africa has its own African migrants/refugees and their presence have given rise to xenophobic feelings and often outbreaks of violence and fatalities. Their work speaks of the fragile, transitory and often tragic lives of people displaced by war and persecution. 31
Venue: Studio of Tertia Knaap, 7 Riverside Lane, Onrus River Tertia and Linky, In Dialogue - An Ode to Friendship You are invited to view a recent installation in the studio of Tertia Knaap, 7 Riverside Lane, Onrus River; a tribute to the DIALOGUE WITH A FRIEND, where both artists’ work together, either sharing a canvas, or separately, the one to enhance the other.
Venue: Walker Bay Art Gallery Thelmi Bekker Thelmi Bekker paints what she feels and experiences. She says: I do not paint in anger, pain or violence, but you may find hope in my paintings or something that tells you of the grace of God, or endurance in adversity or just joy in life!
Venue: Walker Bay Art Gallery Florian Junge “First and foremost I’d like my art to ‘speak to you’ - in whichever form you choose to listen. Woven into that story, let there be unique threads of who I am and what I have invested in this art. I like to bring something fresh and new that others have not done quite like this. I hope that my art speaks to you every time you let it and an affinity grows”.
