S
edert die gedenkdiens vir Madiba, waar ‘n onprofessionele tolk ons land in ‘n groot verleentheid laat beland het, en ook die swak tolking wat in die eerste weke van Oscar Pistorius se verhoor op die voorgrond getree het, is hierdie beroep skielik in die kollig. En wat ‘n bedekte seën is dit nie! Taalwerkers, soos tolke en vertalers, werk meestal agter die skerms om allernoodsaaklike kommunikasiegapings tussen mense wat mekaar se tale nie ken nie, te oorbrug, maar hulle en die onontbeerlike werk wat hulle doen, geniet bitter min ‘sigbaarheid’ en dus ook weinig. Tog beroep tolke hulle graag op die grappie dat hulle die tweede oudste beroep in die wêreld beoefen! Op die keper beskou steek daar dalk tog ‘n bietjie waarheid daarin. Sedert die begin van die mensdom gesels, vertel, raas, skinder, stry ons graag met ons medemense deur middel van taal, immers ook met andertaliges wie se tale ons nie ken nie. En dan kan ons slegs kommunikeer indien daar iemand beskikbaar is wat die betrokke tale ken en tussenbeide kan tree om wat gesê word, vir ons te verduidelik, of meer presies, om dit verstaanbaar oor te dra (vertaal).
Nêrens is die ‘onsigbaarheid’ van tolke so duidelik soos op die verhoë en in die raadsale van die wêreldpolitiek nie. Meeste mense is grootliks onbewus daarvan dat daar agter elke groot wêreldleier ook ‘n tolk (of ‘n vertaler) staan! Wanneer wêreldleiers vergader, word daar meestal nie slegs Engels gepraat nie, maar gebruik meeste van hierdie leiers hulle ‘eie taal’ ongeag of hulle kollegas hulle verstaan, of nie. Leiers kies die taal wat hulle die beste ken en waarmee hulle - tydens sensitiewe en hoogs vertroulike onderhandelinge - hul heel beste insette kan lewer. Waarom gebruik hulle nie sommer Engels nie? Want nie almal van hulle is noodwendig goed vertroud met Engels op daardie gespreksvlak nie en daarom sluit wêreldleiers gewoonlik vertroude, professionele en (hoogs betaalde) beroepstolke in hulle span kundiges en raadgewers in wat hulle op hul reise vergesel en wat sorg dra dat hul leier se presiese bedoeling op die mees getroue en genuanseerde wyse oorgedra word. Om terug te keer na die Noord-Gautengse Hooggeregshof waar swak tolking die afgelope klompie weke die onderwerp van menige alledaagse gesprekke geword het. Soos tolking in die wêreld se raadsale, vereis tolking in geregshowe eweneens dat
die dienste van goed opgeleide en ervare beroepstolke benut moet word om ‘geregtigheid te laat seëvier’. Ons verloor soms uit die oog dat daar nagenoeg 25 tale op ‘n daaglikse basis in ons veeltalige land gebruik word! Dit spreek dus vir sigself dat hierdie taleverskeidenheid ook verreken moet word wanneer mense in die geregshowe van ons land moet kommunikeer. Die gebruik van die juiste woord en die gepaste idiomatiese uitdrukking, die vind van die fynste betekenis nuanse kan dikwels die verskil tussen lewe en dood beteken. Dit is mense se reg om daarop aan te dring dat ‘n ervare, opgeleide beroepstolk as tussenganger sal optree in gevalle waar jou taal nie begryp word nie. Gelykheid voor die reg moet vir alle mense ook ‘n talige moontlikheid wees! Ek spreek graag die wens uit dat die ongelukkige gebeure rondom tolkdienslewering sal lei tot ‘n groter bewustheid en erkenning van die onontbeerlike rol van beroepstolke en –vertalers! I
’m a priviledged woman. In fact, my husband, daughter, dogs, cats, neighbours, everyone who happens to find himself in the Hermanus area is extremely priviledged. HERMANUS is arguably the prettiest sea-side town in the Western Cape. We are blessed with more Art galleries and Unique little Shops than Security Companies which for an ex Jo’burg girl is a Huge Plus.
Many of us were pleasantly surprised that last year’s FynArts was such a resounding success. I for one can’t wait for this year’s offering. And the good news is, you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy art. Art speaks to my heart, not to my head. I don’t buy a piece because it’s a good investment, but because it talks to me… because it stirs something in me everytime I look at it. I have to admit that every time I manage to acquire a few of Caro du Toit’s paintings I’m hard pressed to allow the businesswoman in me to sell the work instead of hanging them all in my house. Every single painting of Caro’s which leaves the shop is like giving away a little puppy, I can only hope it goes to a good home. My liefde vir die mooi dinge in die lewe kom van my Ouma Helene af. Toe ek ‘n klein was het sy my drie waardevolle lesse geleer. 1) ‘n Dame verlaat nooit die huis sonder lipstiffie of behoorlike onderklere nie. 2) ‘n Eenvoudige ete proe baie beter aan ‘n mooi gedekte tafel. 3) Maar die belangrikste les van almal: As jy elke dag van jou lewe iets kreatiefs doen, sal jy ‘n lang en gelukkige lewe lei. Goeie nuus vir baie van Hermanus se inwoners. Ek glo ons het meer kreatiewe as klaende siele… En dis natuurlik nooit te laat om te begin nie. Ek verstaan dat Tannie Rita (nou in haar negentigs) nog steeds pottery klasse gee. (Ek en my dogter het altwee ‘n paar jaar gelede by haar klas gekry en my liefde vir keramiekwerk het van daar af ontwikkel.) My oupa was egter nie ‘n kreatiewe mens soos my Ouma nie. Hy was meer intellektueel van aard, maar omdat hy versot was op sy klein fyn vroutjie het hy sy hardverdiende geld spandeer op die kontemporêre kunstenaars vir wie sy so lief was. In die begin jare moes hulle maar die sente omdraai, maar Ouma het geglo dat ‘n kunswerk op die lang duur baie meer vreugde bring as om drie keer per dag vleis te eet. (daai was nog die dae van tjops en wors vir ‘n ligte brêkfis). En ten spyte van die feit dat my Oupa nie (soos my ouma my geleer het) elke dag van sy lewe iets kreatiefs gedoen het nie, het hy ook ‘n lang en gelukkige lewe gelei. Die enigste afleiding wat ek kan maak is dat hy die voordele van ‘n kreatiewe lewe geniet het omdat hy omring was deur kunswerke, mooi goeters, boeke… Elke muur en hoekie in daai huis was behang met die ongelooflikste kunswerke, kleurvolle ontploffings, eksotiese goetertjies en ornamente wat my Ouma in ongewone winkeltjies uitgesnuffel het. Toegegee… miskien het Oupa ook langer geleef omdat hy minder rooivleis as die gemiddelde Suid-Afrikaanse man verorber het. My ma, haar broer en susters het Ouma en Oupa se Maggie Loubsers en ander waardevolle skilderye geërf. So die mooie het toe ook waardevol geraak – finansiële sowel as sentimentele waarde. Ek sal enige dag my rooi vleis inboet vir een van daai werke. Ek is gelukkig met ‘n man getroud wat net so kreatief is soos ek. Percy is my mede-skrywer op Swartwater, hy maak leergoed vir Amulet, hy kook, bak ‘n mean wortelkoek… Deesdae is hy die teksredigeerder op Binnelanders… En hy is ook die Pa van ons ewe kreatiewe dogter, Jana. Ek spandeer deesdae meer tyd in Johannesburg (ek sal julle volgende maand van al my avonture in die Stad van Goud vertel) so Percy is deesdae Pa, Ma, sieketrooster, taxi-bestuurder, verpleegster, sielkundige… Dis nie maklik om ‘n enkel pa/graswewenaar te wees nie. Aan al die wonderlike manne in ons lewens… As jy ‘n Pa is… Omring jouself met mooi goeters (al is jy Meneer Testosteroon) want… nie net sal jy ‘n lang en gelukkige lewe beleef nie… jy maak dalk net die beste belegging van jou lewe.
Hoop jou geliefdes bederf jou vrot, Pappa… En moenie met Mamma stry nie… As sy sê dis mooi, koop dit net.

Obesity and Related Health Problems What are “Overweight and Obesity”? The terms "overweight" and "obesity" refer to body weight that’s greater than what is considered healthy for a certain height. The most useful measure of overweight and obesity is body mass index (BMI). BMI is calculated from your height and weight. How obesity affects your health depends on many things, including your age, gender, where you carry your body fat, and how physically active you are.
Ivan Ivanov, a former coach for the Bulgarian National Gymnastics Team, noted:
“A workout should GIVE you more than it takes out of you.” What is the PURPOSE of YOUR ‘workout’? To “EXHAUST by extraction” or to RECHARGE!? It’s important to consider! Why? Oupa Jan het elke oggend saam met Ouma Gertjie die stuk opdraand verby Belvedere oppad na Brenton, aangedurf met die rooi Kombi. Nou, daar moet op hierdie punt inag geneem word dat Net-Net nie vandag se TDi of wafferse 4x4 is wat enige bult lag-lag uitdraf nie. Die 1600 VW Kewer enjin moes eenvoudig, effektief, met volgehoue momentum die bopunt bereik, en nie vir enigiemand hoef te stop nie, selfs nie vir ’n trein nie! Dit was dan juis waarmee Oupa Jan elke weeksoggend te make gehad het. Oupa Jan het soggens goed rekening gehou met die vasgestelde tyd wat die trein op skedule die opdraand sou oorkruis. Een oggend, egter, het Oupa Jan hom met die trein se tyd misgis, die trein was toe 60 sekondes of wat vroeër as gewoonlik. Ten spyte van Ouma Gertjie se angsbesef en benoude kreet dat die Kombi dit nie gaan maak nie, het Oupa Jan heel braaf en ongetwyfeld geweet dat die Kombi die trein oor die kruising sou klop – hy móés net! Die uiteinde? Toe die trein oor die kruising kom, was Oupa Jan en Ouma Gertjie ’net-net’ oor die treinspoor kruising. Vandaar die Kombi se unieke bynaam. Jamie’s Homemade Pappardelle with Quick Tomato Sauce

Ingredients
• Extra Virgin Olive Oil • 2 cloves garlic, peeled and finely sliced • ½-1 fresh red chilli, halved, deseeded and finely sliced • 1 small bunch of fresh basil, leaves picked • 400g good-quality tinned chopped tomatoes • Sea Salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 250g fresh lasagne sheets • Parmesan cheese, freshly grated, to serve

• On a lightly floured work surface, cut the lasagne sheets into strips with a knife or a pastry wheel. • When the water is at a rolling boil, add the pasta and cook for a few minutes until just al dente. • Drain the pasta strips in a colander, reserving a little of the cooking water. • Stir the pasta into the warm sauce. If it's a bit thick, add a few spoonfuls of the cooking water to loosen it up. • Sprinkle with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and the reserved basil leaves and serve immediately. Serves 2 Cooking time: A super fast 25 minutes!

We were spoiled with a hake & calamari combo served with potato wedges. The amari melted in your mouth. Next up was a selection of chef’s special mixed combination sushi. My favorite was the river red (prawn & avo inside and caviar outside) As we thought that was it. We received a mouthwatering cake from Stoep Cafe. (I recommend the chocolate cake) They also do a range of tarts, quiches, deserts and a selection of coffees and beverages. Friendly service at this well known establishments, where the locals are greeted and they enjoy their favorite dish for afternoon lunch. A relaxing atmosphere where you want to kick off your shoes and enjoy a class of wine with friends and family. As if this is not tempting enough there are shopping opportunities across the road. ie algemeenste sin wat ek hoor, is altyd iets soos ” Kom help asb met my huis, dit voel nie vir my reg nie” Met dié vraag het ek natuurlik geen probleem nie, want dit is my werk maar so deur die jare het ek n paar gewoontes of patrone by mense opgetel. Met verwysing na die problem. Daar word gewoonlik ’n argitek aangestel om die planne van n huis op te trek of bystand te verleen met verbeteringe. Gedurende die proses word baie tyd en aandag geskenk om ’n perfekte woning te skep. Dis nou die vier mure wat jy huis noem, soos die oumense sou sê. Dis ook reg so, want jou woning is seker die grootste finansiële uitgawe wat jy persoonlik aangaan. Daarna is die idees op… en die bankrekening leeg. Die ou meubels en gordyne moet maar eers doen. Die word dan staan gemaak in die nuwe huis. Kort voor lank, so met die verdwyn van die vars verfreuk en die nuwe plante wat lustig in die tuin groei, begin die gevoel elke oggend kop uitsteek.
“Dit voel nie vir my reg nie” Daar bestaan natuurlik ’n wanbegrip, dat Binnehuiseversierders, baie duur is en derhalwe min of nooit oorweeg word nie. Maar ek is nie van plan om my dienste te propageer nie, in teendeel wil ek verduidelik hoekom die gevoel in die oggende kop uitsteek. Daar is twee groot redes:
1. Beplanning
Soos by die beplanning van jou woning is die binne ruimte baie belangrik. Die dekor is die siel van ’n huis. Daar word dus, na my mening, nie genoeg aandag en beplanning gegee aan die binne kant van ’n huis nie. Siende dat die aksie ook n bankrekening, redelik leeg kan maak is dit van groot belang dat die keuses wat jy maak, dus reg moet wees. ’n Volgende wanbegrip is dat jy van jou ou meubels onslae moet raak, vir die nuwe huis. Dit is natuurlik ’n begrip wat elke man se nekhare laat regop staan en hom baie vining na sy golfstokke laat gryp, net om so vining moontlik weg te kom, voor die gesprek in n huismoles ontaard. Toemaar Manne, die meubels lyk net vreemde en onvanpas, omdat daar nog nie genoeg beplan is nie.
2. Weet waarvan jy jou
Ek vind baie dat ’n huis se inhoud bestaan uit ’n mengelmoes van style. Ek skryf dit toe aan modegiere, wat opgetel word in tydskrifte en ander verwante plekke. Nie dat dit verkeert is om sekere style te meng nie, maar dan moet jy weet wat jy doen. As jy weet waarvan jy hou en daarby bly, raak dit al hoe makliker en word jy nie sommer beinvloed deur jou vriendinne of tydskrifte nie en raak die hulpbronne slegs ’n inspirasie.
My oplossing: Ek gaan met die volgende paar artikels verskillende style bespreek en inligting verskaf, wat dalk kan bydra tot ’n beter begrip en hoop dat ek jou daarmee kan inspireer. Ek het reeds so bietjie vertel van “Vintage” en “Shabby Chic”, in vorige uitgawes. Vergun jouself die tyd om te dink, waarvan jy regtig hou. Daar is so baie wonderlike maniere om jou eie identiteit af te stempel op jou huis. Wees kreatief en gee jouself toestemming om verder te dink en te ontwikkel. Bly weg van veilig wees. Dekor is soveel meer as om kleure en skakerings te laat pas. Kry jou inspirasie van plekke wat jy besoek, boeke wat jy lees en style waarvan jy hou en mee kan identifiseer. Jou huis is tog die plek wat jou emosies verlei. Kyk om jou rond, neem waar en besluit goed wat dit is wat jy wil verander. Of liewer gaan soek, wat dit is wat jou daai gevoel gee, dat als nie reg lyk nie. Vergader dan idees, maak ’n “moodboard”. Kort voor lank sal jy agter kom waar jou voorkeure lê. Suksesvolle dekor is kamers wat tydsaam gevorm is, geliefkoos is en die beeld van geluk en trots uitstraal.

Hermanus whale season: When, why and what are southern right whales up to?

Hermanus on the south coast of South Africa is one of the best whale-watching destinations in the world. From June to December every year, southern right whales congregate here to deliver one of nature’s most remarkable spectacles. Hermanus’ shallow, sandy coves and warmer, calmer waters provide whales with the ideal environment to start and eventually complete their up to three-year-long reproductive cycles.
The majestic southern right whales have travelled a long way to get here – thousands of kilometers – on a journey that starts in June. Then by early December, they’ll head in the opposite direction again, back down south to fill their mighty bellies until the following year, when they do it all again. But why do southern right whales undertake these grueling long-distance migrations? Southern right whales are seasonal feeders, and during the Southern Hemisphere summer months they spend their time feeding in the far Southern Ocean, a cold and seemingly inhospitable place that is nonetheless rich in microscopic marine animal life, known as zooplankton, such as krill – the main element of the southern right whale’s diet. This makes the Antarctic region ideal for fattening up before embarking on the incredible journey north, towards Hermanus and other places along South Africa’s south coast. It’s not exactly known how far these marine mammals travel. Distances can vary according to where they feed in the summer, and that in turn can vary according to the distribution of their prey (the krill and other zooplankton we mentioned earlier). While the location of feeding grounds is uncertain and changeable, scientists have positively identified the Antarctic Peninsula, South Georgia, the Falkland Islands and areas south of the 50-degree latitude. That’s a long way to go, but considering that southern right whales grow to be up to 17m long and can weigh more than 50 tons, these colossal beasts are well equipped for the long- distance challenge. Once in our relatively warm and calm waters, the whales then undertake the important task of mating and calving (giving birth). They don’t eat while they are here; instead surviving on the ample blubber (fat) they’ve built up during their time in the south. Places like Walker Bay offer the perfect conditions for breeding in peace. For us land dwellers, it also offers the perfect location from where to view this spectacle of nature. Of course, you needn’t stay on land. With Southern Right Charters, you can get as close as 50m to the visiting whales, and because they are naturally curious, they are likely to swim up to our boat to say hello. Our on-board specialist whale guide will shed light on all the marine life encountered (which certainly doesn’t end with whales) and also explain the southern rights whales’ peculiar behavior: find out what breaching, spyhopping, lobtailling and fluking means, then see it happen first-hand.

uring the Middle Ages horseradish was used for a variety of ailments, and was grown in apothecary or medicinal gardens cultivated by monks and priests for their local community. It was only much later that it gained popularity as a culinary relish. For the average garden three or four clumps are all that’s needed to keep a household stocked with horseradish all year through. My grandmother used an ageold horseradish poultice recipe to ease the pain of aching rheumatism, sore, stiff joints and aching feet. ► CULTIVATION A deeply dug, well composted bed in full sun, laced with extra manure, and a little piece of root, is all that’s needed. Dig 15 cm deep holes and place the little root, or crown, at the bottom. Cover with more compost water three times a week and within three to four weeks you’ll be able to salad. ► PROPAGATION Dig up the clumps in autumn - make sure the bed is moist and friable so as not to break the roots. Lift carefully and save the smaller roots for replanting. Separate the old crowns into smaller bits
and replant about 40 cm apart. ► HARVESTING AND PROCESSING In spring, dig out the whole clump, using a large fork. Cut off the biggest roots to use for horseradish sauce and replant the smaller roots. ► COMPANION PLANTING Planted under fruit trees and near potatoes, horseradish deters soil-borne diseases. each end of a potato row. Planted under mango and apple trees, it helps prevent mildew, brown rot and fungus development. ► USES OF SAGE •Culinary - Peppery, pungent is all that’s needed to spice up a salad. Older leaves become very peppery, but give extra bite to sauces and curries. However, it’s the roots that are mostly used to create delicious and easily made condiments. Freshly grated and sprinkled sparingly over rich foods (or grated in vinegar), it stimulates the digestive process. Older roots need avoid inhaling the fumes as they can cause discomfort and watery eyes. Warning: Overeating horseradish may cause irritation of the stomach lining. •Medicinal Horseradish has antiseptic, antibiotic, diuretic and expectorant properties that make it excellent for chest ailments and circulation in general.

Horseradish syrup eases coughs, colds, area and thus is excellent for chilblains, aching muscles, strains and sore stiff joints, and is used by many arthritis sufferers. It is also excellent as a deep foot massage or as a massage cream for chilled feet before putting on your socks.
