kerk, by die ouetehuis, ens. Mooi loop!

“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood." - United Nations - The universal declaration of human rights 21 Maart vier ons menseregte dag. On page 11 women can read how to boost their confidence and fight aging. Matthew, owner of Proactive Fitness gave us the results of the MegaMakeover challenge. Splash, as one of the sponsors joined them in La Pentola to celebrate all the contestants' personal victories and announce the overall winner. See page 6. On page 25-26 you can read more about SANSA in Hermanus.

ix brave Mega-makeover contestants celebrated their incredible personal
attending their prize giving party at La Pentola restaurant on the 31st of January 2014. To ensure a colourful, fun packed evening, our theme was ‘Tropical Island’ and all of our contestants were asked to ‘strut their stuff’ in front of an audience full of friends, family and the business people that sponsored the contest. Not only had these 6 people lost a combined massive total of 77kg, but it was most obvious that they had all gained a renewed level of
It was more physically demanding than a 3 month competition would have been but it gave more prolonged period and for the more healthy habits I developed to become more entrenched in my life. Luckily I had found an eating plan that suited me a few months before I started the challenge and had adjusted to that fairly well with good results. the challenge started and then set out to reach them as the months went by. I was prepared to work hard and I was very motivated and balance that I walked between meeting the physical goals that I had set for myself and pushing myself too hard – this was the most challenging lesson I had to learn over the 6 months from a physical point of view, but in the end I came to learn that you need to work consistently throughout. I also had a knee operation due to a knee injury, two and a half months before the challenge started, and this had been one of my main motivating factors for entering the challenge – to get my knee strong and functioning well again. It took a while for me to learn to trust my knee again and this is probably where my most humbling lesson came in to play. For as I worked towards my physical goals I found a process starting to happen that I had not anticipated. As an overweight person I had been disconnected from my body for years and suddenly I was learning to connect with my with regards to my knee, and learning to trust it again. I have discovered that my body has an innate intelligence of its own and it doesn’t have to be forced and pushed into doing things. the things your body enjoys doing and it will respond in the most amazing way. I have huge respect and awe for my body as I experienced
I will not hesitate to say that the emotional work was the most demanding, exhausting but worthwhile part of the experience. For myself, I came to realise that I had to check my emotional state regularly as it was directly related to what and how I ate. I came to understand that to make my weight loss sustainable I needed to address my emotions and the reasons for my eating habits. At times I found it very unsettling but I had to be prepared to ask myself some hard questions, I had to be prepared to take a long hard, honest look at myself and face and accept things that
• Be prepared to ask yourself the hard questions and take a long honest look at yourself and your patterns of behaviour with regards to your weight and what purpose it serves in your life. • and isolated place where you can limit yourself in your life. Be willing to admit to yourself that you need all the help and support that you can get – then accept it in any form it comes. • Lastly take one day at a time, one step at a time to make the healthiest choices that you can for yourself and never give up on yourself. Being a very goal orientated person I always like to challenge myself and I have decided that . I plan to walk around 800km’s in about 6 weeks. I know I need to have my knee very strong to take on this challenge and that will be my focus in the next 6 months. It is something that I have been journey. Proactive Fitness & Splash Magazine would like to congratulate Michele Riley, Theressa van Zyl, Ronel Meyer, Sune’ Theron, Deone Herbst & Andre Smuts for their amazing effort. We would also like to thank all of our generous sponsors without whom; this contest would not have been so spectacular or so successful. contact Mathew on 0843589827 or 028 3132074
addressing my beliefs, my thoughts and my behaviour, especially with regard to food and my triggers for eating unhealthily. Losing weight is very much about experiencing fear. Fear that you won’t lose the weight and fear that you will and whether you will be able to keep it off. I resisted a lot of this work in the beginning, but slowly but surely I gained valuable insight and started recognising my patterns of behaviour and what role my weight had played for me in my life, and from there I worked slowly at being prepared to let go of what no longer served me. None of this was easy but at the end of the challenge I have found this process to be so worthwhile. But I recognise that this is a process that will be ongoing as I work towards maintaining my new healthy lifestyle. How can you motivate others who are overweight to make a lasting decision to change their ways? Each person’s journey is different and I certainly don’t have the answers that will apply to everybody – but I can only put down the most important points that I have come to learn and experience as I walked my own journey with weight loss. Anybody who has battled with their weight over a period of time will hopefully identify with some of these issues: • To motivate others to make lasting changes to their lives with regards to weight management, you need to have been there yourself and you need to “walk your talk”. You need to be practicing these principles yourself in your life so that others believe they can do it too. • You need to be prepared to take responsibility yourself in – especially with regards to your health. You must be prepared to change things for yourself only and not because you are trying to meet someone else’s expectations. • One of the most important things I learnt for myself (and it is something I still battle with from time to time) is that you need to be GENTLE with yourself. So often overweight people are extremely hard on themselves – especially at what they perceive to be their constant failures to control their weight. • In fact to change your way of behaving you need to change your perspective of the whole situation. Get rid of the ‘lack mentality’ – where you relate weight loss to what you can’t have and what you can’t eat and all the hard work that goes with it and rather see it from the perspective of what food you can NOURISH your body with and what exercise you enjoy doing so that your body starts to respond from a place of being treated well. The weight loss will follow. • To be able to do this you need to be able to be realistic and not expect yourself to do

all who were present. Although all of them were winners in their own right, there can be only one outright winner and that winning contestant was Michele Riley who lost an incredible 21kg! When we asked her to share her thoughts with us, this is what Michele had to say about her ‘Mega-Makeover Journey’: Introduction The Mega Makeover challenge was an extremely important part of a journey that was over 30 years in the making for me. I have battled my weight for more than thirty years and have lost count of the number of kilograms lost and gained over the years. This challenge turned out to be an opportunity that allowed me to lose the last of my excess weight and reclaim my life. How would you describe the emotional and physical experience of taking part in this challenge? This contest ran for 6 months and as such there was a longer period than usual that we
how it responded after years of abuse. This was my most powerful lesson. But by far, if anyone asks me what the most
things perfectly. This is an imperfect process and journey – it is a process that is not linear but circular- but as long as you learn as you go, you grow, and move forward. • Try not to put pressure on yourself – choose goals that are realistic and also focus on goals

n the 21st we celebrate Human Rights’ Day. And in this spirit, I’d like to expand on a few fundamental truths which aren’t necessarily written up in our constitution. The most liberal constitution in the world (apparently). Jy ket klaar vir hom gesê: JY KAN NIE. Wel, hoor my lied. Ek was van kleins af ‘n halsstarige kind. Ek wou weet; hoekom? Hoekom nie? Maar dis nie reg nie! Hoekom moet ek dit doen? My arme ma was rasend. Net soos my liewe dogter my vandag rasend maak met haar direkte vrae.
Ek het hom herinner dat my kontrak einde Januarie verstryk… m.a.w. fire my dan. Heeltemal te vervelig vir my avontuurlustige Voortrekker gees. Hoekom is jy so verbaas?
Suid Afrikaners is entrepreneurs, ‘n boer maak ‘n plan. Of probeer Google Translate.

PERMANENT MAKEUP EYEBROWS Unfortunately not all of us are blessed with gorgeous full brows that compliment our face shape and accentuate our eyes. Pencils and powders are great for remedying sparse growth and enhancing poorly shaped, asymmetrical brows, but if you’re looking for something longer lasting, permanent makeup is the answer. This can be done by creating the effect of ultra-fine, delicate hair strokes that blend seamlessly with your natural brow hair. This will recreate a flattering brow shape with a natural, non-artificial look, by using hues and tones to suit your skin and hair colours. It will ultimately enhance your face and bone structure and result in a youthful appearance, emphasising your eyes.
By working with the “landscape” of your brow – be it too short, thin patchy or sparse – reviving the basic shape. And if your brows are completely gone an entirely new brow can be created for you. CAN BAD TATTOOED BROWS BE FIXED? In most cases they can. Badly shaped brows and unnatural colours can be reworked and brought back to a flattering look with the use of corrective pigments. Your expectations must be realistic, as results are not always comparable to new permanent makeup brows. BODY
empowering women to stay forever youthful…
YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO FEEL GOOD Do you ever catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror as you're coming out of the shower or getting dressed - your eyes zero in on "that part?" You know the one that's shape-shifting and so obediently obeying the laws of gravity? That wasn't there last week was it? Or last year? You KNOW it wasn't there five years ago. ARGHHHHH!!! What's happening here?
M
aybe it's on your face or thighs or midsection. Whatever you do, do not hold up a mirror to get a rear view! There's some small part of everyone that believes aging won't happen to US. That's for old people. Inside we still feel 30. And if we feel that way inside, why oh why is our outside betraying us so cruelly? Aging really can take its toll on your selfconfidence, especially in this youth-oriented, appearance focused culture. A recent study done at the University of North Carolina Medical School, looked at body satisfaction amongst women aged over 50. The study revealed that, of the 1,789 women who took part; only 12 % of the women over the age of 50 years, were satisfied with their appearance. So don’t feel alone. Interestingly, even though these women were content with their body size, a sizeable number still reported dissatisfaction with other
aspects of their appearance, including their stomach (56.2 percent), face (53.8 percent), and skin (78.8 percent). Also interesting is that, those women who were satisfied with their body, tended to exercise more and lead a healthier lifestyle. Thus, a good self-image, leading to a healthier you, is a self-fulfilling prophesy. “Our findings underscore the need for a multifaceted approach to studying and assessing body image in women as they mature and their bodies undergo constant age-related change,” said Bulik, director of the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders. It is very interesting that SKIN was mentioned in 78.8 percent of cases. Refine Anti Aging and Laser Clinic feels confident that our focus, multifaceted and holistic; is concentrated in the right direction. Approximately 80 percent of the patients seen at Refine, are treated for general aging problems of the skin. The clinic offers peels, derma-needling, enzyme masks, fillers, skin tightening and lymph drainage(carboxytherapy) to name but a few.
56.2 percent of patients in the study sited their stomach as their source of dissatisfaction with their bodies. In response to patient’s needs; we recently launched our body tightening treatments. We use doctor only lippodissolve injections to melt body fat and thereafter tighten the skin, remove cellulite and assist with fat removal, with the use of our Tripollar radiofrequency machine. This is yet another treatment which combines scientifically proven, minimally invasive treatments given by the doctor in combination with therapist based treatments. We are the only Anti-aging clinic in the Overberg/ Overstrand to offer this particular treatment program currently. Each package is tailor-made for both the skin/body condition and the patient’s budget. It is important that the therapist is well trained in her profession so that any advice and treatments are scientifically sound. Refine only employs highly trained, competent skin therapists. We believe in continuing professional development and thus offer regular training and updates for our therapists. In conjunction with this approach; our permanent doctor Dr Michelle Emett and owner Lindi Prinsloo work hand in hand to consult with and advise patients on their individual needs. (See case Study below). Based on our reputation, Refine has continued to grow over the last four years. Equally important; is that on leaving the clinic, the patient undertakes to continue to look after his/her skin and that they accept responsibility for daily maintenance of their skin. We prefer to focus on specific skin conditions; using a range of products that suit an individual’s needs rather than generic broad-based
BEFORE
treatments. All take home products are currently rated top in the field of skin care. Feeling good about what you look like, can make you feel better about who you are. Outward appearance has a significant impact on a person’s self-esteem. Skin is one of the first things others notice about you, and it is probably the first thing you notice about yourself when you look in the mirror every morning. So much of self-confidence is wrapped up in how we look and how we think others perceive us. As we see the signs of aging, not only do we deal with the pain of physical changes, but also the stress of accepting we have little control over the situation. You have the right to feel good and Refine aims to empower men and women to stay forever youthful. • Good skin makes you feel beautiful • Good skin helps you become more confident • Good skin allows you to be more social • Good skin is an indicator of a healthy lifestyle CASE STUDY: The pictures below are by permission of one of Refine’s clients. It has been used as it is a typical example of how doctor(fillers/ Botox) and therapist(Dermaroller/Peels) work hand in hand to offer the patient a multifaced, holistic treatment package. Book you consultation today with the Refine therapists or doctor and get a scientifically based opinion without having to a pay a cent.

Breakfast in a Pan
A Toast to Dualit!
“Every piece of toast has to be crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside,” says Leslie Gort-Barten, CEO of Dualit, a UK-based manufacturer of kitchenware. And this is the dedication and passion Leslie and his son, Alex has for their products, a tradition that Leslie’s father Max Gort-Barten began in 1946.
F A hearty breakfast cooked in Le Creuset’s Toughened Non-Stick Pan to enjoy with that perfect slice of toast from your Dualit toaster and a steaming cup of java from your Dualit kettle!

or over sixty years, Dualit has produced top-of-the-range kitchen products which has left a lasting impression with customers. In this blatantly disposable era where products are manufactured with built-in obsolescence, Dualit remains consistent in its quality and takes pride in creating products that are durable and long-lasting. “We have people who come to us who have had a toaster for two or three generations,” says Gort-Barten. “It’s just amazing how long they last”. This is part of the reason Goozi is a proud quality and durability and are passionate in promoting this above cheaper imports that do pollute the environment. Back in the old days, every toaster was completely handmade, something they still strive to do. This commitment to exceptional quality, continued innovation along with being attuned to the needs of customers can be attributed to the family spirit that pervades the company ethos. Not only has the business remained in the Gort-Barten family, but many employees have been with the company for many years and some have spanned more than one generation. But it’s not only toasters that Dualit are known for, but also kettles, hand blenders, food processors and more. Stylishly designed with a touch of retro, a Dualit product will add a touch of pazazz to any kitchen.
WIN: a Dualit toaster to the value of R1300 to spruce up your kitchen!

WHAT IS CRYOLIPOLYSIS? Non-invasive procedure that effectively removes fat from targeted areas that have not responded to diet and exercise. Cryolipolysis cools the fat to a temperature below 0 degree C, which in turn destroys the fat cells but not the surrounding tissue. The exposure to cooling is set so that it causes cell death of subcutaneous fat tissue without apparent damage to the overlying skin. This procedure is most effective for the abdomen, love handles, saddle bags and bra bulges. R750

Reshape
ULTRASONIC CAVITATIONS This procedure is excellent for cellulite reduction. The ultrasonic head emits strong sound waves into the targeted area that break down pockets of fat cells. (30 minutes) R500
MEDICALLY ASSISTED WEIGHT
How does this work?
RADIO FREQUENCY of 38 degrees C – 42 degrees C under the skin. This is capable of stimulating the existing dermic collagen and producing a contraction of the epidermis, which in turn produces a tighter looking skin. (30 minutes) R500
► What is Reshape? Reshape is a weight loss program that primarily focus on fat loss. By using Lipolytic in combination with a very low calorie diet you will lose up to 30% more abnormally stored fat as opposed to a reduced calorie diet on its own.
THE NEW PRODUCT THAT IS TAKING HOLLYWOOD BY STORM!!! Derma Pen micro-needling – R1000 per treatment with FREE manicure! This is a non-surgical method for tissue rejuvenation and regeneration. It can be used to treat: • Wrinkling • Acne scarring • Uneven skin texture • Follicular scarring – ‘enlarged pores’ • Skin rejuvenation • Surgical scars on the face and body • Larger scars such as C-section scars
► What is Lipolytic? Lipolytic is a natural product that will trigger lipolysis (breaking down fat) and blocking lipogenesis (absorbing energy into fat cells) if combined with a reduced calorie diet. ► How does it work? The combination of the medication and the specially formulated eating plan will trigger the body to tap into your abnormal fat stores as a source of energy. By tapping into your fat reserves you will release a substance called leptin that will trigger your satiety centre in your brain and give you a feeling of “fullness”. Lipolytic also increases your serotonin (happy hormone) levels thus increasing your mood. The end result being: • Weight Loss (fat loss) • increased energy levels • Decreased hunger • Increased in mood
Derma roller - old methodology. Derma pen - new methodology
► Can anyone do the program? Because it’s a natural product it is safe and has no side effects. However you have to see your doctor to rule out any medical cause for your weight problem.

Taste Bud Pleasures Take Away @ La Luna Pizzeria A different take on the taste bud pleasures, we decided on take away. Arnold at La Luna prepared some of their finest dishes to try at our own leisure. Sitting outside, relaxing after a hard days work, we started opening the boxes to discover what was smelling so divine. I had my doubts when I saw the peri peri chicken pizza, because personally I don’t like hot food. I was pretty surprised. The first bite is mildly hot, then you taste the nice herbs and spices. Next we tasted a very interesting combination called Biltong-nut. Definitely something new and unusual, but very tasty. The cherry on top was the Mayo Supreme. It’s a combination of mozzarella, chicken mayo, parmesan, garlick, sour cream spring onion and fresh chilli. Order it as a take away and enjoy it in your garden on a beautiful summer evening with a glass of wine. Simply divine! Next we tasted the pastas and we started with the Florenco. This is a combination of bacon, garlic, olives and peppadew in a creamy sauce served with tagliatelle. Complimentary mixture of flavours and more than enough bacon and olives added to the dish. We then moved on to a vegetarian lasagne. There was lots of veggies in season in a creamy white sauce layered with lasagne sheets. Last but not least, we tried the beef lasagne. Everybody knows beef lasagne, but this is definitely a must. There is enough meat in the dish and the herbs compliments the meat, all layered in a creamy white sauce. The taste is awesome. The new owner at La Luna is definitely going to make a fortune out of me. They will have abalone on the menu pretty soon, in both pizza and pasta. Should you choose to sit down and eat, they have a Wi-Fi hotspot. You can choose to have your food delivered, and (available soon) choose a DVD online to be delivered with your food, perfect for those lazy weekend evenings.

The inspiration of a friend y story about Jenny Jackson is personal … However, it is also a story of admiration, enthusiasm, encouragement and compassion. The day Miss Jenny walked into my life was just the flow of life itself. It was the joy becoming her best friend that made for a lasting bond. The journey so far, an acknowledgement of a remarkable woman. Linus Pauling said ‘Satisfaction of one’s curiosity is one of the greatest sources of happiness in life’ It’s one of the many things Jenny and I share. I was curious about this little lady with the energy of a child, Jenny is curious about life itself. It was in her late 60’s that she, for the first time, acknowledged the possibility of being an artist. It was a discovery of a sense of identity for her. Her creativity flourished in the safety of self acceptance. She gave herself the gift of faith with picking up the palette knife then ... and still does every time she stands in front of an empty canvas; having no idea what the controlled chaos of the blade sliding into the wet paint might bring. She lets the canvas and the paint and the palette knife lead her. Her mantra: ‘don’t fiddle … don’t think … trust the process …’ Her works are contemporary yet influenced by Old Masters, in a highly personalized way. There is a mysterious quality that brings magic. She manages to capture the depth and emotion of her models and finds their souls. This quality urges her viewers to look longer into the painting. With courage she dares to take risks, has the strength to be compassionate and the wisdom to be humble. ‘A painting is never finished’ Paul Gardner, an author states; for Jenny it carries on into a new canvas. There seems to be no limit to her creative flow.
I feel privileged and a little bit part of every painting, watching Jenny merge every day to bigger heights in her career. From her first solo exhibition two years ago, to clientele from around the world. It is collectors that are buying her art now. The establishment of the South African National Space Agency (SANSA) in 2010 beckoned a giant leap for South Africa’s undertakings in space science and technology and heralded a new era in the exploitation of space technology in service of humanity. In its third year of operation, the Agency has been instrumental in moving South Africa into the global space arena as a serious space contender. SANSA offers state-of-the-art products, services and infrastructure that impacts on the local and global economy, knowledge economy as well as the lives of all our citizens. As an entity of the Department of Science and Technology, SANSA is tasked with coordinating the development of a national space programme for South Africa in collaboration with various local and international stakeholders.
Understanding space plasma
Three projects come together to gain a deeper understanding of the world of space plasma. A digital upgrade to the South African SuperDARN radar in Antarctica, the construction of a High Frequency Direction Finding (HF/DF) interferometer array, and the tricky business of uncoiling a wire in space will all come together to give SANSA extended capabilities in space weather monitoring and space plasma studies.
Part 1: Icy challenges for SuperDARN project
The SA Agulhas II’s December voyage to Antarctica saw the polar research and logistics vessel encounter tough conditions just before Christmas. Strong currents and thick sea-ice prevented the ship from reaching the ice-shelf, which caused a two week delay. When Gert Lamprecht, SANSA’s Research Support Unit Manager, arrived at the South African Antarctic base, SANAE IV, he and his team were told they would have three weeks less time to install SANSA’s new high frequency digital radar system. The radar is part of an international network of 33 radars distributed over the northern and southern polar regions, called the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN). The new digital radar is going to replace the existing 17 year old analogue radar, which was due to be decommissioned in 2012, and will provide a more versatile, reliable and state-of-the-art research platform for scientists to study the ionosphere and other space weather related phenomena. Antarctica is the optimal place for space weather research instrumentation because the Earth’s
Part 2: Uncoiling an antenna in space
While the new SuperDARN radar is being installed in Antarctica, back on the home front, SANSA
have an antenna of 10.5 m attached to it. That’s a big feat for a small satellite. So, Prof Robert van Zyl and his team from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) devised a rolled up Now that TshepisoSAT has been launched, the 0.01 mm thick wire must be slowly uncoiled into a straight antenna. With a small tip mass placed at the wire’s end, the satellite will be put into process should slowly uncoil the wire, which is similar to a piano wire in rigidity. If it bunches up or bends too much, it will fail. During the daily communication opportunities with the satellite of about eight minutes, approximately 2-10 cm of antenna wire will be uncoiled per day. If all goes well, it should be straightened out over a period of several weeks. Department of Science and Technology, the satellite was designed and built by postgraduate students at the French South African Institute of Technology (F'SATI) at CPUT, in collaboration with SANSA. This approach offers students a unique learning experience and prepares them very well to participate in the South African space industry. The satellite is currently healthy and with most tests completed, it is ready to begin the experiment. When extended, the antenna will transmit a simple radio signal that can be received by the Hermanus HF/DF array and the SuperDARN radar in Antarctica, as well as the rest of the SuperDARN network. This will ensure that there is comparable data and will enable the team to determine what effect the plasma in space is having on the travelling radio wave as it propagates through it. Once the effects of the plasma are known TshepisoSAT can act as an HF beacon, and since its location in space is accurately known, it can be used to calibrate the SuperDARN radar.
Earth’s atmosphere. A single pair of radars in the network can measure the position and movement of ionospheric plasma in an area of approximately 4 million square kilometres. Two engineers from Lamprecht’s team will stay behind on the Ice for 14 months to monitor and maintain the suite of space monitoring instruments that SANSA operates from the base. Despite the delay and the hostile Antarctic environment, the project is still on schedule and the team’s enthusiasm has not dampened. Part 3: HF/DF interferometer array construction The team who installed and helped develop the new SuperDARN Radar at the Antarctic research base SANAE IV. They each performed the role of SANAE IV Radar Engineer over the last 5 years. Image credit - Brett Anderson (Dartmouth College/NASA)
Electric plasma in space has always affected radio frequencies transmitted to earth from manmade satellites – like glass diffract rays of light through windows. SANSA scientist aim to better understand just how plasma diffracts radio waves. This experiment brings together the SuperDARN radar at SANAE IV, the special coiled-up antenna mounted to TshepisoSAT and a facility. The project has started out small – three separate antennas laid out in the shape of an ‘L’ are being constructed on an area of 10.5 m. Each antenna consists of two square loops, 1 m in diameter. The mini-array should take six weeks to complete and ultimately there will be seven antennas, the last four of which will be built when the test signals from TshepisoSAT’s special

When the CubeSAT’s transmissions from a known position in space are received by either SANAE IV or the Hermanus HF/DF array, the difference between the measured and the true incoming angles of the radio wave at either antenna locations should supply the team with enough comparable data to determine just how the signal has been refracted by the plasma in space. Experience gained from this project will be used to calibrate SANSA’s SuperDARN radar and the resulting data will be invaluable to gain a better understanding of how radio signals propagate through space.
South Africa is ready for SPOT 6 Reception
SANSA will begin receiving satellite imagery from the new SPOT 6 high-resolution Earth observation satellite this year. This award winning satellite is an improvement on its predecessor SPOT 5 which has provided high resolution images for successful use across numerous Government departments and public or private institutions in South Africa. Some of the uses of this Earth observation data include - use by Government to address national priorities such as housing and infrastructure planning and implementation, monitoring and evaluation of our natural resources such as water,
SANSA to invest in an upgrade which will enable the Space Operations team to support more launches and In-Orbit Testing campaigns. Having started in January 2014, the project includes the replacement of the antenna feed horn and all the equipment for receiving and transmitting the full commercial Ka-band. Acceptance testing has been completed and the antenna is By updating the antenna, SANSA is able to offer clients the entire range within the Ka-band frequency, thus creating new possibilities for international business and partnerships. in agriculture. A SANSA workshop in November 2013 showcased applications from SPOT 6 conducted on SPOT 6’s last contract procedural requirement before being approved by the European Space Agency to start its Earth observation mission. Tracking goes digital
New satellite tracking web application A new web application has recently been developed and is making satellite tracking more accessible. The app allows radio amateurs, hobbyists and other scientists with an interest in TshepisoSAT (formerly ZA-CUBE-1), SumbandilaSAT, SUNSAT and the International Space Station to track their path as they orbit earth. The app is elegantly simple. Once a user selects a satellite, a world map highlights the satellites’ footprint. Users can then enter their own location to see are set to the SANSA facility in Hermanus, but any custom co-ordinates can be entered, and the app is open to anyone with web access. According to SANSA Researcher Dr Ben Opperman, the app will be invaluable to radio amateurs, for example, who have often played a role in assisting SANSA in collecting data from satellites. He also believes that being taught to code is essential for scientists: “One simply cannot conduct effective research if you cannot write your own computer programmes”. The satellite tracking app was designed on open source Python software with custom Matlab code written for detailed off-line simulations and analyses. Students and engineers at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology currently use the system, but the team is hoping it will enable and attract a whole new audience of space enthusiasts. The web app is available at http://webapps. sansa.org.za/zaspace
