Trots uit die Overberg
Kom loop saam met SD Fourie terug op die spore van die verlede Die dooies is nie dood nie. Hulle is daar in die digte skaduwees, het die digter Birago Diop gesê. Solank ons die dooies onthou, leef hulle. Dit is die mening van SD Fourie, skrywer van die Strandveld. Kom staan saam met SD bo in die koepel van Danger Point se vuurtoring en kyk uit oor die Strandveld en die see. Luister na die gedruis van die branders wat skuimkop breek oor die Birkenheadrots terwyl sy die storie van die lanternswaaier en dié se nageslag aan jou oorvertel. Dis meer as ’n 100 jaar later – die lanternswaaier is al lankal vergete, maar op ’n amper spookagtige wyse verskyn die dagboeke, briewe en foto’s van Hagelkraal se mense. Hulle tree byna soos skimme uit die verlede, meld hulle aan by Hanna Bagiano, die weeskind wat op die spoor van haar voorgeslag, die hele drama van lewe en dood herleef. Luister na die legendes van die streek; die skepe wat deur die lanternswaaier na hul watergraf gelok is; die vloek van ’n sterwende matroos wat geslag na geslag weer opduik. Die sterk vroue van die Strandveld wat nie durf praat nie. Hulle wat die skandes begrawe en swyg oor die verlede.

SD Fourie se tweede roman, Die dooies leef, het pas verskyn. Dit volg op haar gewilde debuutroman, Die Lanternswaaier, wat onlangs op RSG voorgelees is. In Die dooies leef roep die skrywer daardie stuk lewe weer helder en duidelik op. Jy as leser swerf saam met Maryna van Hagelkraal na Vissersdrift, die spogplaas van die Lourense. Jy beleef die sleepmis wat snags oor die vlei kruip, en jy hoor die klap van perdepote wanneer ’n geheimsinnige ruiter deur ’n toe hek jaag.

Maryna wat, soos haar voorgeslagte nie ware liefde vind nie, maar met haar eiesinnige streek sorg vir ’n paar snaakse insidente. Lees weer die ou briewe van soldate uit twee wêreldoorloë, liefdes briewe uit ’n ander era en dagboek inskrywings van vroue wat jou hart sal raak.

Ja, selfs die arende en toktokkies skuul by Jou. Hoeveel te meer oes Berendgoed. Maar die swernoot maak van maatskappye en trounke sy tjerk. Jirre, vat Jy him vir my vas. Draai hom om met sy gatkant na die wereld en sy gasegkant na Jou toe. Net Jy ka dat mos doen. Slaat hom soos Jy die Israeliete geslaatit. Mitte sterk hand vol liefde… Want hy bly mos maar… Oestwee se hanstjint.

I
’m a deeply troubled woman. 2015 is the year of the Cricket and Rugby World Cup. Big trouble ahead. Besides being a girly girl who loves beautiful things, I also happen to be a complete sports fanatic. No, not the kind who punishing my body, rather the kind that spends hours on the couch watching others pushing themselves to the limit and punishing their opponents’ bodies. And trust me, you don’t want to hear the unladylike comments emanating from yours truly when a referee gets it wrong. But I’m not so worried about myself. I’m extremely concerned about the health of my other half. The Super Fifteen has barely started and my hubby is heading for a massive heart attack… well, a serious bout of constant indigestion and bad mood syndrome, at least. How are we going to survive the next couple of months with all this emotional turmoil… ? Maybe some Ladies (and gents possibly?) have no idea what I’m talking about. No, sweetie, The Super 15 is not a Top Designer Show. Hello! It is a rugby competition featuring the top teams in the Southern Hemisphere, not to mention the most gorgeous young men and granted some ugly ones as well. But it is a brutal and beautiful spectacle… as close as we will ever get to the Gladiators of Ancient Rome. Even my teenage daughter is beginning to show some vague interest. Well, she doesn’t have much choice, just as she is constantly glued to her smart phone, so her parents are glued to the TV Screen. Granted she doesn’t scream at an inanimate object for 80 minutes, but you can’t pick your family, right? We’re eccentric fanatics, darling – Live with it. You can bet your bottom Rand (oh the irony considering the rand dollar exchange rate) that at some crucial point load shedding will kick in and we will miss out on a famous rugby or cricket victory. I swear my husband will spontaneously combust should he miss out on can be fed back onto the national grid. Well, there has to be some kind of positive angle on
Oh come on. We’re not going to whine about Eskom again. It’s a done deal. Last month’s headlines. This is Africa. And since I was born here I have learnt that the only way to survive this wonderfully wild completely unpredictable continent is to be a touch wacky and insane yourself. No, I’m not embarrassed to admit it. At least I’m interesting. And I’m still here. me in Amulet… Only yesterday a fabulous woman, Penny from Stanford came looking for a bunny for her garden. No, dear heart, not the furry kind, the ornamental kind… But actually she didn’t want a nice fat round cute one. She wanted a hare… one with attitude. And I recalled seeing wacky creatures with pointy ears made from wood and I am now searching for said unusual hare because that will please my eccentric customer. Because that is what I do. I get you want you want. Because that is what gives me joy. Now how did I manage to go completely off the subject…? Quite easily actually. Eccentrics have short memory spans apparently. Where was I? No idea. I’ve forgotten. Couldn’t have been that important… THIS is what is truly important. LISTEN. Yes, you heard me. Stop and listen. Be still. Completely still. And once it has become completely quiet, listen to what your heart is telling you. This is not some airy-fairy stuff that I’m thumb-sucking. Humans have for centuries That’s why some of us believe you come back to complete the journey. Trust me, the answer is inside you. You only have to listen. And once is, take action. If it means you have to change direction, do so. Wow, nie gedink ek gaan julle met so een slaan nie, of hoe? Ek ook nie, toe ek weer sien, toe staan dit daar. Nou ja, dan is dit seker maar tyd om te praat daaroor. Soos meeste van julle weet is ek ‘n vrou wat hou van variasie. So elke keer wat ek kriewelrig raak weet ek, dis sulke tyd. Tyd om aan te move. En as ek nie na daai stemmetjie luister nie en aankarring dan raak ek kwaai en onaangenaam. En partykeer word
jy siek, want selfs jou lyf begin vir jou sê dat waarmee jy besig is, nie jou lewenstaak is nie. En ek praat nou van eenvoudige goed. Gestel jy werk in versekering, maar jy raak meer opgewonde oor die plantjies in die potte voor die gebou as die kommissie wat jy elke maand verdien. Jy is besig om met ‘n kliënt te gesels maar as jy jou kom kry staar jy by die venster uit – gefassineerd deur die lusern op die lande… Dis einde van die jaar se kantoorpartytjie, maar jy kan nie wag om by die huis te kom om te sien of jou tamatieplantjies al begin dra het nie… Hoekom dink jy is jy so ongelukkig by die werk? Ten spyte van die feit dat jy ‘n fantastiese salaris verdien en gereelde kantoorure het en ‘n betroubare kar ry? Gaan jy wragtag vir die volgende 20 jaar aankarring en ongelukkig wees en eendag as jy afgetree is plante op die ouetehuis se stoep groei? Vra maar net. Dit bring my weer terug na Penny wat ‘n anderste tipe hasie soek vir haar tuin (as jy die Engelse deel van die artikel gelees het sal jy weet waarvan ek praat, en as jy ‘n probleem daarmee het dat helfte van die artikel in Engels is, get over it – dis hoe ek skryf en basta, en dieselfde geld vir die Engelse lesers wat nie Afrikaans verstaan nie. Your loss Antie) In elk geval, ek het agtergekom hoekom ek dit geniet om ‘n winkel te hê en hoekom ek nie kriewelrig raak as dit by my mooie Amulet kom nie. Dit gaan oor die ‘deal’, om daai hasie te kry vir of om daai silwer spieelkas waarvan daar nog net een in die land is op te spoor… Dis wat my vreugde gee. Dit gaan nie net oor die geld wat klingel in die registerkas nie... Saam met my acting en skryfwerk het ek my ander passie ontdek. Ek is ‘n closet smous. (Nee dit beteken nie ek verkoop kaste nie, alhoewel ek daarvan ook in my winkel het). En nou haal ek ‘n baie slim man aan. ‘No amount of money or recognition can compensate you if you are not doing your life’s passionate creative work; and if you are not doing it you had better draw everything to to a complete stop until you can listen deeply to your soul, identify your heart’s desire and change direction. Featured Artist: Jennifer Neumann I was born in 1977 in Kent, England. I attended school at St Lawrence College in Ramsgate and completed my A-levels in 1997 (Geography, Classical Civilization and Art). I then moved to South Africa, where I studied at Pietermaritzburg University, completing an honours degree in Fine Art in 2000. In 2009 I moved from the Natal Midlands to Hermanus in the Western Cape before finally settling in Somerset West in 2014 where I currently live with my Husband and 2 daughters.
I now focus on Oil on Canvas and my subject matter consists mainly of South African botanicals, birds, landscapes and nguni cattle, which remain a passion. Having completed a post graduate diploma in photography, I pride myself in taking most of my own reference photographs for my work. This has provided many memorable moments, from capturing images amongst fields of inquisitive nguni to wildlife encounters in a number of South African reserves. I have currently sold over 160 original paintings both locally and internationally.

COUPEROSE The term couperose essentially means the same thing as telangiectasia. It is the result of long term Rosacea leading to permanent dilatation of small arterioles and later veins. Palomar Laser can permanently get rid of facial veins and arterioles associated with Rosacea, alcohol or sun damage.
THERAPIES At Refine Clinic there are several treatments that will significantly reduce the appearance of red skin and at the same time will benefit the entire skin area being treated. The Starlux Mag G involves a series of gentle treatments designed to rejuvenate skin by utilising light. It is non-invasive, there is no downtime and it improves redness, flushing and dilated blood vessels encountered in people with rosacea. This light based treatment selectively treats red or brown spots on the skin and the superficial heating also causes dilated capillaries to shrink. Although rosacea is a chronic condition and cannot be cured, its appearance can be improved. In addition, facial vein removal with the use of the Palomar laser can improve skin couperose dramatically.
HYPERHIDROSIS AND FACIAL BLUSHING It is important that your physician or therapist differentiates between blushing which is sudden excessive facial redness and sweating, associated with social conditions, which would not normally cause such skin reactions; as opposed to persistent red skin. Blushing is associated with excessive sweating, as opposed to permanent redness of the skin due to a skin condition known as Rosacea. The problem with blushing is that it is often a self-perpetuating condition with the person becoming progressively self-conscious and thus worsening the reddening of skin. We’ve all experienced leaving the boardroom with sweat pouring down our armpits, or trying to look cool at the school dance but ending up sweating like a swine! Now those days are gone with BOTOX saving the day. Excessive facial blushing or facial sweating is caused by the autonomic (sympathetic) nervous system which secretes adrenalin, noradrenalin or acetylcholine during a fight or flight reaction. The skin overheats and causes tiny blood vessels to widen, causing redness of the face and sweating. Patients, who suffer from facial blushing, frequently experience sweaty palms and hands as well. ROSACEA Rosacea differs from facial blushing in that it is a skin condition characterised by blemished skin and constant redness around the cheeks. It can evolve in stages and

1 roll of shortcrust pastry 250g of dark chocolate 150g butter, cubed 60 ml of water 4 eggs 100g castor sugar Raspberries for finishing

Easter always conjures up thoughts of sweet treats. Easter eggs, hot cross buns and chocolate bunnies. A perfect time, therefore, to haul out the baking tray and surprise the family with some scrumptious goodies to savour all through the Easter weekend! TRY SOMETHING NEW We love a good hot cross bun as much as the next person, but there are so many more tantalising treats to try! Easter and chocolate go together like the proverbial horse and carriage – you simply can’t have one without the other. So we found this oh-so simple chocolate tart recipe with buttery shortcrust pastry to try – so easy and deliciously decadent.
For perfect shortcrust pastry, keep it cool. • Work in a cool environment. If it’s going to be a hot day, make the pastry in the morning before the heat of the day kicks in. • Keep ingredients such as butter cool (don’t let it melt too much). • Work on a cool surface such as a marble slab. • Work quickly – this keeps the pastry cool and prevents it from becoming too elastic and difficult to roll which will result in a tough pastry in the end.
CREATING COOKIES AND MEMORIES Easter eggs, bunnies and egg hunts – children love Easter! It’s a great time to get the kids involved and make some good family memories too. Hand them a cookie cutter and they’ll be happily occupied. Messy flour-covered hands and faces are sure to give rise to infectious giggles. Not to mention, how scoffing some cookie dough while mom’s back is turned has deligted children for generations! FINALLY, GATHER AROUND AND INDULGE You’ve whisked, whizzed and baked up a storm. The coffee machine is spitting and bubbling away, filling the house with the rich aroma of freshly-brewed java. Now comes the best part – munching on your tasty treat while savouring a steaming cup of your favourite full-flavoured coffee.
Method
• Preheat oven to 180°C. • Butter the pie plate. • Roll out the pastry carefully into the Le Creuset Fluted Flan dish, pressing well on the edges. Prick with a fork. Line with grease paper and cover with baking beads or rice and blind bake for 20 minutes, then remove the baking beads and cool. • Cut the chocolate into pieces and melt with the butter and water in a Bain Marie. Allow to cool and add the egg yolks • Beat the egg whites, adding the sugar. • Gently fold the egg whites into the chocolate mixture and pour over the cooked pastry case. • Allow to cool for at least 3 hours. Garnish with the raspberries.

Alpacas have only been in South Africa since the year 2000. There are now approximately 6,000 animals nationwide farmed in six provinces by 50 breeders. Alpacas are bred for their exquisite light-weight, non-allergenic soft fibre which comes in 22 natural colours and shades. Many breeders are producing beautiful alpaca yarn and garments whilst others are serious breeders who are improving the fibre by careful genetic selection of excellent imported blood lines. For inspiration I tapped into the world of Chanel. Gabrielle Chanel, the French fashion designer, founder of the Chanel brand was one of the most influential people of the 20th century. I personally have admired and idolise this woman for as long as I can remember, not only for her fashion but her incredible sense of style. She made a bold and lasting impression on women’s fashion and succeeded in packaging and marketing her own personal attitudes and style. Coco’s own lifestyle fuelled her ideas of how modern women everywhere should live. A famous quotation from this icon; “A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous” Her private apartment on the second floor of House of Chanel at 31 Rue Camban in Paris followed her favourite colour palette, shades of beige, black and white. Her love and preference for these colours was rooted in the world of the convent where she was raised. Inventor of the “little black dress”, she never wore any other colour than black, white or shades of them. Elements from her art collection and theatrical décor pieces provided themes for her fashion collections. She said fashion is in the sky, in the street, it has to do with ideas and the way we live. An ornamental birdcage was the inspiration for Vaness Paradis “Coco” perfume. The octagonal shape of one of Mademoiselle Chanel’s mirrors in the apartment inspired the cap of CHANEL NO 5. CHANEL NO 5 is the first perfume to feature a designer’s name. The red binders of her collection of books were copied to create her signature red lipstick. Coco used her refined décor taste in her successful fashion designs.

The Coco Chanel Suite at the Ritz is still full of coromandel lacquerware, rock crystals and large mirrors. For her it was about a matter of proportions. She believed that luxury was not the opposite of poverty. She pointed out that luxury is not something to show off but to treasure in the inside, rather than display it on the outside. Her idea of luxury hidden, as in the many beautiful gold cigarette boxes she received as presents from the Duke of Westminster which were lined inside with precious gold. The mirrored spiral staircase leading to her private rooms was well used by the likes of Giacometti, Stravinsky, Dali and Picasso. Chanel was known for her determination, ambition and lifelong energy which she applied in her social life too. She had a classic, elegant and sophisticated visionary talent in interior design, with a trained eye to pay attention to detail. As she would say; “An interior is the natural projection of the soul” Her country home in the South of France, Villa La Pause was a present from her lover Hugh Grosvenor, the second Duke of Westminster. The décor was an intriguing pastiche of styles that could only be executed by someone with confidential sense of personal taste. Coco Chanel’s décor palette can be used to create interesting displays in your own home. I made use of silver wear, glassware and old black and white photos. The added impact of 2 black and white cushions provide the elegance and sophistication of the famous “Coco” style.
An eclectic mix of French classic furniture, antiques and Italian influenced pieces provided the basis for a surreal and elegant apartment. Cristal chandeliers, Chinese screens, black lacquered surfaces and beige suede sofa’s created an undeniable air of enchantment. East meets - West feel where her amazing style remains and fashion fades.

First and foremost thank you for agreeing to chat to us at Splash Magazine. As you know, our magazine focuses on the greater Overstrand and Overberg areas. How does our beaches/ environment compare to countries you have visited whether on tour or for personal visits?
A
We have the most beautiful beaches in SA, some of the best in the world when we mention Cape Town. The first thing people ask when I’m overseas is…..Are you from Cape Town, that tells you. Port Elizabeth, where I’m now based, also has the most amazing beaches and settings in most parts.

On the days that you had to spend the entire day in the field with the sun baking down on you, how did you stay hydrated and focused? We drink plenty of supplements that keeps us going and use factor 60 sun cream. I think being fit, which you have to be to stay out in the sun all day it makes it that much easier. At times depending on the heat we take vitamin B12 as well.

How do you think South Africa has been coping mentally and physically during the World Cup series thus far?
They are a very good unit and very, very fit, it’s a family environment and that’s important to any team sport. They are ready and geared up for this 2015 world cup in Australia and New Zealand. This could be the year they bring it home.

Do you think our death bowlers are up to the task, especially if we bat first and our batsmen fail to post a decent enough score?

We have what it takes and bowlers to do that, the margin of error in death bowling is very small, get it wrong and you could go for plenty. There is the experience of Steyn and Morkel that can do a good job. You must have plan B if A does not work which I’m sure they do have. In your opinion, what's the reason for the current lack of genuine all-rounders in South Africa, when we were always blessed with the best all-rounders in the world? (Shaun Pollock, Jacques Kallis, Lance Klusener, Brian McMillan, etc...)

That’s been a question many have asked, there will be nobody that will ever fill the boots of a Kallis, but I’m sure one will come along and fill that role soon in the near future.

Tell us your feelings about the ’92 World Cup, specially the 22 Runs of 1 ball scenario we found ourselves in, and how the DuckworthLewis system has changed the game.

On many occasions you were the hero of the match and sometimes you might even have felt like the villain. Do you think enough is being done to prepare youngsters for the pressures of the game today, especially walking out in the green and gold for the first time?
A
It’s something that every South African that watched the ‘92 world cup will keep in their minds forever, it’s spoken about plenty all over SA. Whoever brought that rule out was crazy, however they seem to have got the system right now. It was a great tournament for us, the underdogs that the rest of the cricketing world new nothing about, the unknown quantity. We surprised the world how good we were and we were unlucky not to have played in the final vs. Pakistan.

Sledging was huge back in the early 90’s and has calmed down tremendously today with more cameras everywhere and mikes on the stumps, the ICC have also clamped down big time with it, they obviously still sledge but is limited.

What do you think is South Africa’s chance of winning/ reaching the final of the World Cup? And who do you think is the favourite and why?

We have a huge chance of making it. You must remember, the world cup only comes around every 4 years and most of the current members of the squad won’t be around for the next one. So they will be giving it there all to win it. I believe in them and they can do it. They have the unit to do it.
