Tune in on fridays 16:30 for the Splash Vinyl tripple play, On Whale Coast 96FM

Adapt or cry By

Hé Truter lène

I’m procrastinating. Call me the Queen of Procrastination. I promised myself that as soon as my daughter left home for Stellenbosch I will sort out my house/life/paperwork. She left over 3 weeks ago. Alas. Everything is pretty much the same. Except, remarkably, that her room is tidy. (No thanks to her mother I have to admit) Okay, I’ll make a fresh start once the busy season is over. More time passes. Nothing happens. The Queen of P reigns. Enough is enough. This morning I sent Percy off to man the shop and I started with the root of all evil. The dining room table. Let me name but a few of the unusual objects that adorn this, the 4 metre table where family gatherings take place. Next to my granny’s precious silver dome lie hordes of empty tubes and pots of paint, tissue paper, turpentine, saucers, broken porcelain, sandpaper… old maps, Jana’s exam notes, this has clearly become the craft table/study/rubbish dump – albeit beautifully lit by a stunning chandelier that would do well in Amulet. So where does this family eat? you ask.

In front of the TV of course! Isn’t that the modern family’s new meeting place? There where Mommy’s laptop resides next to the heap of receipts she’s been threatening to organise before the tax season starts. Clearly my accountant had to cope without the necessary paperwork seeing as I’ve already received my tax assessment… except I can’t recall where I put it – possibly downstairs next to my overflowing dressing table? Yes, I’m a desperate woman and yes I need help which is why I started sorting this morning… But then I came upon the reminder that my Splash Article needs to be in by tomorrow so here I am spewing pearls of wisdom (?!) in an effort to postpone the inevitable. I Solemnly Promise… Next month I’ll be writing to you from a perfectly organised living room and we’ll all live happily ever after … and the South African economy will be strong again and corruption will be a thing of the past… and all students will get free education… HELP! I sound like THAT MAN! Adapt or die another man said. En ons is nou daar. 2016 is going to be a mother. (why mother and not father, I always wonder?) Even for us here in Paradise. And there’s no point in living in denial… or procrastinating as some of us do… The Whale Festival is 25 years old this year. And yes, it’s old and tired and not working anymore. But I’m not going to sit on my backside and complain, point fingers and criticise, I will submit a proposal and deliver it by hand. (as instructed) (Apparently one can post it, but I don’t quite trust the Post office yet – I’m waiting for the turn around strategy to kick in… ) The last time I had to hand something in by hand was when I was at school (and that was a very long time ago) There was no option of sending a proposal via email. Surely the Whale festival committee is evolved enough to have a access to the Internet? Afterall gmail is free. MMm, maybe it is time for new blood… fresh energy. A new way of thinking perhaps? I recall how (as a visitor – with money to burn) I used to travel to Hermanus for the Whale Festival to visit the fabulous stalls for the fantastic and unusual goodies you could find… I still have a pair of sandals and a fairy that I bought there… Percy still wears the blue shirt he purchased. This was way before the red sheds were erected. It had a carnival-like atmosphere… A far cry from the sad sagging tent of last year with three forlorn stalls and a few bored stragglers. Indeed, the time has come to adapt. We have to re-invent ourselves. Not just Hermanus, but South Africans have to figure out a way forward. I am no stranger to re-invention. You would hardly recognise the original Amulet that I bought five

years ago. Besides the fact that we’ve expanded, the look, style and energy of the shop have changed quite dramatically. I pride myself on the fact that you can come into the shop every week and you will find something you haven’t seen before. Such are the joys and the challenges of the competitive business of retail. To survive, you have to be unique. I can’t compete with the big chain stores, nor do I want to. We’re constantly brainstorming, coming up with new products, finding new suppliers, exciting artists… And we love local. And original. And Magical. Of course the problem with being original and awesome is that people copy you. Or at least TRY to copy you. There are many wonderful examples of wall quotes (reproduced in China) gone wrong. “Laugh until you belly hunts” (hurts) “If you take the wrong turn, you can always turn black.” Oops. Not very PC. Very expensive mistake especially if you’ve ordered 200 000 of them. I’m laughing until my tummy grunts. That’ll teach you; stealing other people’s words/ideas. Check the details on the Splash page how to stand a chance to win an inspiring wall quote from Amulet. (All you have to do is ‘like’ the Amulet page) Sien uit om jou te sien in Mooi, mooier Amulet!

Wolvengat D ie Wolf s e Gat

WolvenGat By Helen Manson-Kullin

T

he hamlet of Wolvengat lies about 10k’s inland from Die Dam. originally a leper Colony was established here, with links to the Monrovian village of elim. Graves of long passed lepers still dot the country side. The farm Wolfgat was first registered in the early 1800’s by the Germishuis family. Roughly translated Wolvengat means ‘’the wolfs’ lair’’, these being the reclusive strand Wolf. there have been sightings on and off over the years of the few that still remain, but they are mostly gone, pushed out by fire and farmland. a haven for shipwreck survivors the Wolvengat River provides the first fresh drinking water. oom Willie used to tell the story of how he went with his grandparents to the shipwreck auction on the beach at Quoin Point, and how they bought the ships mess table and transported it home on an ox wagon. Wolvengat seems to have experienced a boom time during the 50’s and 60’s when the trading store, school and post office were all up and running. it was during this time that the pious Minister a Mr viljoen, decided that

l

Both tina and Wim have exhibited extensively in sa and abroad. Hendrik Rabie is a potter and sculptor, creating large installation pieces from a secret cement mixture. His work is available from him directly at their home gallery. Kali Griffin, well known for her remarkable painted cloth products, including linens, tablecloths and serviettes, her work can be seen at the Hermanus farmers Market amongst other places. We are also lucky to have internationally acclaimed photographer Rob nzaou Kisolo. His work is all over the internet, so do take a look and follow this remarkable journey.

Wolvengat was far too rude and that the name viljoenshof suited the village much better. to this day some maps still show us as viljoenshof and there are still a few road signs directing one to viljoenshof that’s why people so often get lost on the way here! We now have 2 village stores, Jennys Handelshuis [run by Jenny and Gerhard Bleeker-they’ve been here 30 yrs] and Wolvengat Plaaswinkle run by Mr James leuner. today Wolwies, as it is fondly called by locals, is a busy little village of artists, farmers and foodies and an internationally registered Horse-Back Archery track at the Griffins Mounted archery academy [see face Book for more on this and courses being offered, as well as the recently held World Champs]. our artists, are many and varied. Daniel Griffin is an accomplished potter specialising in tagines and fire pots of all shapes and sizes. Wim [cover photo] and tina de Roubaix of lillywood farm and de Roubaix Gallery paint and sculpt. the gallery also has a good stock of prints and greeting cards.

in the foodie line we have sanity farm charcuterie available at the Hermanus farmers Market and also straight from the farm [by appointment/ order]. sue and Mike Preece have brought charcuterie to a new level of excellence with their range of both traditional and more exotic sausages. Pork pies and scotch eggs, and their legendary Prego steak rolls are also on their menu amongst many other yummy things!

Helen scott from Kaleba Dairy is making fantastic yoghurt, fiore de latte, butter and mozzarellas. Her products are popping up all over the place with many of them being used by local restaurants. i run the Black Board Bistro here at lillywood farm. We cater for in house events and cater out as well. our menus are traditional european peppered with asian and north african cuisine. We have a range of spice mixes, like Baharat, Zoug and slow Roasted Masala as well as homemade pies and roasts, all under the Black Board Bistro label. these will be available from the Bistro as well as the Baardskeerdersbos Market held on the last weekend of the month [follow us on face Book to see what’s cooking]. a day in Wolvengat will take you back 50 years to a slower pace and true hospitality. We live a blessed life out here and enjoy a crime free existence where people still sleep with their doors and windows open. it's advisable to call ahead when planning your trip as we would hate for you to come out and find no one home.

There is NO other method that actually removes the ink from the skin other than 123-TATTOO-FREE®. 123-TATTOO-FREE® simply creates a mild irritation that causes the body to naturally reject the pigment. O

n Saturday 19 March 2016 at 8:30 p.m., our community will join hundreds of millions of people across the globe to help change climate change by switching off the (non essential) lights of our homes and businesses for one hour – Earth Hour, the world’s largest grassroots environmental event in history. By taking part in this global ‘LIGHTS OFF’ event, we will be acknowledging our commitment to operational actions that benefit the planet in the year ahead. We are proud to live in a community that is showing leadership in solutions to our environmental challenges by taking part in Earth Hour 2016. Let's join our voices in what promises to be an amazing and inspiring global celebration of our collective commitment to the planet. In the lead up to Earth Hour 2016, we should all take a closer look at ways we can waste less and reduce our ecological footprint – both at home and in the workplace. Earth Hour began as a single-city initiative – in Sydney, Australia – in 2007 and has since grown into a global movement with hundreds of millions of people from more than 7,000 cities and towns in 172 countries/territories across every continent switching off their lights for Earth Hour, creating history as the world’s greatest ever environmental action. We're excited about Earth Hour 2016. We hope you will join us in this important global initiative and encourage your family and friends to switch off their lights for Earth Hour at 8.30 p.m. on Saturday 19 March 2016 and make a commitment to an action that benefits the planet beyond the hour. A commitment to Earth Hour would enable all of us here in Onrus Vermont to not only express our concern about the health of our local environment, but to let all the people of the world know that we stand with them in finding solutions to our environmental challenges and celebrating the one thing we all have in common – the planet. Please visit www.earthhour.org for more information. OnVerWag is using the opportunity presented by Earth Hour to organise a community event at Davies Pool on 19/03/16 from 18h00 to 22h00. Earth Hour : Onrus Vermont Unplugged will take the form of a Safety & Security & Sustainable Life Style EXPO, as well as an OPEN MIC event, and during the hour long switch off we will be doing light photography with Onverwag member Dave de Beer, of Hermanus Whales. We invite people to come from 6pm, to bring their picnic blankets / chairs, their cooler bags (liquid refreshments) their torches, and their wallets (for hamburgers, boerie rolls, raffle tickets and glow sticks from us, and an array of things from our EXPO Exhibitors) and to come and support our first fundraiser, remembering to turn off their non essential lights at home. All proceeds will go towards the Onrus Vermont CCTV camera project, which we're very motivated to roll out this year.

We can only do this with YOUR support! Caroline Gabb

The Enlighten Strings Ensemble, one of the most exciting local development programmes for children, ever, was launched by the Enlighten Education Trust in Hermanus in September last year. Twelve primary school learners from six schools in this region are being given the opportunity of a lifetime. Thanks to a generous donation from local resident Elvia Bury, in memory of her late husband Alex, this ambitious initiative aims to establish a classical music youth group and later, hopefully, a full youth orchestra for strings, which will be good enough to perform anywhere in the country, and perhaps later, the world! Hailing from Zwelihle, Mount Pleasant, Hawston and Hermanus, most of the children, aged from 7 to 13, have had no prior music training. Their selection was based largely on their musicality, love of music and strong desire to play a musical instrument. Based on these criteria, they are receiving violin, and eventually viola and cello training, to semi-professional proficiency. Under the auspices of Enlighten’s Hermanus Music Academy, headed up by Anna-Marié Kotzé, tuition is given by local violin teacher, Hein Attwood and Elzahn Johnson of Somerset West. Not only are the learners exposed to the great classical tradition, but they are being taught to read music and master an extremely difficult musical instrument. All this, and the free use of a violin, costs the parents absolutely nothing. Since the project was launched in September, the commitment and enthusiasm of the children has been nothing short of inspiring. They never miss a weekly class and have been working so hard that they will be giving their first public performance at this year’s Hermanus FynArts Festival - a quite remarkable achievement for children who had never handled (or in many cases, even seen) a violin before!

More for your beauty buck! With the rand/dollar plummeting and Malema screaming pay back the money.....one has to ask oneself, where to from here? How will the South African Aesthetics Industry, heavily linked to the dollar, survive the current economic climate which we happy South Africans find ourselves in?

A step in time saves nine and skin maintenance could save you R120, 000 which is the current quoted price for a Full Facelift in Somerset. The “lunch time peel”, a quick fix, which also kick starts the Anti-Aging process can cost as little as R200 for the PH Formula, Neck Resurfacing Treatment. And should you have a regular facial you can throw in an additional DMK “quick peel” for only R50. Should a younger patient opt for “Budget Botox” they can purchase their Botox at R65 a unit and come for regular top ups which extends the longevity of the Botox. You are also free to discuss your Beauty Budget with your physician or therapist and she will make a plan to suit your budget. An additional cost effective skin tightening procedure is the radiofrequency or Tripolar. This form of skin tightening is excellent for small or larger areas of the body needing tightening. Skin tightening on the whole abdomen, for example, can cost as little as R550. 6 treatments over a period of time are recommended for best results. Carboxytherapy, where carbon dioxide gas is blown under the skin, producing potent skin tightening in a desired area, such as the face or under the eyes, can cost as little as R375, and gives some of the best skin tightening results. They say “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”…..Failure is NOT an option at Refine Anti-Aging and Laser Clinic. Dr Michelle Emett-Refine, Hermanus

A research study, done by Global Business Intelligence Research, shows that the Global Facial Aesthetics Market Value is set to double by 2020. According to the company, this is due to the increased social mobility of women across the world, a sustained economic recovery and an expanding awareness among the general public of the availability of facial injectables. “Additionally, individuals born between 1980 and 1994 present a significant opportunity for companies to generate further growth, as this group is seeking age reversal techniques earlier than its predecessors.” Furthermore, with rapid developments in Medicine, life expectancy has increased dramatically over the last century, leaving an increase in the growing number of healthy elderly people seeking anti-aging treatments.

With all this in mind, we sought to find out how we as a clinic, can ensure sustainability and at the same time offer our clients more bang for their beauty buck. Firstly, we developed the Beauty Calendar. Just as one plans dental visits every 6 months or hair highlights, so too should one plan one’s beauty routine. This is to ensure that maintenance rather than “emergency rescue” becomes the order of the day. So often we have clients who come to us “urgently” needing treatments a few days before they return to Europe; or mother of the groom arriving a week before the wedding wanting to still look as good as she did on her wedding day. This can present a treatment challenge. We can provide “instant lifts” to an extent, but the most economical and best way to spend your Beauty Buck is a long term sustainable program, tailor made to suit your pocket. The Beauty Calendar starts off with a complimentary consultation with Dr Michelle and/or Lindi. These two specialists in their field will either consult together or liaise as to what the best possible care would be, to optimise results for a particular skin, face or body. A simple programme is suggested in keeping with the patients input and budget and an Annual Calendar is given to the patient with dates of proposed treatments. The reason for this is as follows: if one is looking at Collagen Stimulation; collagen is laid down over a six week period and each treatment has an exponential result on skin; if the treatments are timed correctly. It is not suggested that laser is done too closely together, or if one does a Dermapen with peels; the program should run over 8 weeks for best results. It is vital that the patient/ client understands the skin cycle and what we hope to achieve with the recommended treatments. Secondly, get organised! Know what results you want and what is achievable in the expected time frame. So often we need to manage the patient’s expectations and a more informed patient makes the job easier. Make use of the Complimentary Consultation process to ask as many questions as you need to. Feel free to come back and back with your questions until you are satisfied that you understand and are happy with the suggested procedures. Thirdly, be not afraid to state your budget right from the get go. As with most procedures in life, there is a spectrum of treatment choices and prices. We find that in Aesthetic/ Skin treatments, combination therapies work best, there are always options to get a desired result without a high outlay.

Reshape

MEDICALLY ASSISTED WEIGHT

Ozone therapy allows you to purify your body of all unnecessary toxins and disease, giving you clarity and freedom of the Mind, Body and Soul.

How does this work?

► What is Reshape? Reshape is a weight loss program that primarily focus on fat loss. By using Lipolytic in combination with a very low calorie diet you will lose up to 30% more abnormally stored fat as opposed to a reduced calorie diet on its own. ► How does it work? The combination of the medication and the specially formulated eating plan will trigger the body to tap into your abnormal fat stores as a source of energy. By tapping into your fat reserves you will release a substance called leptin that will trigger your satiety centre in your brain and give you a feeling of “fullness”. Lipolytic also increases your serotonin (happy hormone) levels thus increasing your mood. The end result being: • Weight Loss (fat loss) • increased energy levels • Decreased hunger • Increased in mood ► Can anyone do the program? Because it’s a natural product it is safe and has no side effects. However you have to see your doctor to rule out any medical cause for your weight problem.

Saturdays at Proactive Fitness Starting Saturday the 5th March Level 1 8 – 9:15am (For beginners wanting to improve flexibility & mobility) Level 2 9:15 - 10:30am (Intermediate for people with good mobility)

Having seen the many, varied benefits of this sport in her own children’s lives, she is passionate about promoting gymnastics locally, especially for children whose schools do not offer this sport. Gymnastics is a multi-disciplinary sport combining strength, power, flexibility, endurance, discipline, co-ordination and gracious movements. It builds upper body strength and stability, which is essential for good writing and many other skills. Crossing the midline activities ensure that both hemispheres of the brain are stimulated and communicate with each other in order to coordinate and optimise academic learning as well as movement. In addition, it involves mental training such as focusing and concentration. It also develops team spirit and excellent sportsmanship. Research has shown that many gymnasts also perform well in other sports and dance. Therefore, gymnastics is a good foundation for children’s all round development.

“Release, Restore & Realign” Proactive Fitness are proud to join forces with Yasmin Lambat a highly qualified Fascial Movement Therapist and creator of Fascia in Motion and Nicholas Mclean an experienced Yoga instructor and qualified Fascia in Motion instructor. A workout designed for the way you were meant to move using your whole body. Fascia in motion encourages natural movements to reshape your body for: v Core stability and Mobility v Effortless Strength and Flexibility v Less effort and better results v Healthy joints Every day repetitive linear movements and other extraneous & intrinsic stresses are making you stiff, tight and more prone to injury. Moving your fascia the way it was meant to is the new way to train and shape your body for balance using multidirectional instead of linear movements. ‘Get that spring in your step, Flow in your body and Move with ease’ What is Fascia? Fascia is the connective tissue that shapes both body and mind, it is everywhere from skin to bone and head to toe integrating posture, nutrition, emotion and hydration. We thought fascia was only the elastic in our joints and the attachment of muscle to bone to keep it in place, we now know that it is so much more. It’s the stuff that gives you energy, vitality, strength, mobility and wellbeing.

England tour of South Africa roundup

S

outh Africa were always going to battle for a while on their return from India after the dismal performance in the Test Series.

SA don’t have a good record in Durban which was crazy having a test match there, but I suppose Durban needs to have some decent test matches England played brilliantly in the test series and deservedly won the series, some outstanding performances from Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow and Stewart Broad – Ben Stokes was excellent in the tests but struggled in the ODI and T20 which was very surprising after his heroics in the test matches.

Do you have any cricket questions for Meyrick, please email it to us @ cricket@splashmag.co.za

SPLASH 18

England looked like they were going to take the ODI series as well but a great come back from 0 – 2 down, for the Proteas to take the series 3 – 2 As usual, T20 can be spectacular as we witness after the 1st one in Cape Town (Newlands) when it came down to the very last ball, a packed Newlands Cricket Ground were on their feet and what a spectacle – thanks to Chris Morris who smashed 4/6/2 to win the game in the last over After the start England got in the second T20, we thought that England would easily reach a total of around 250 plus – But then……………………. enter the greatest player in the short format of the

game AB de Villiers, just a fine innings once again from AB, that gave every spectator that came out to the Wanderers something they will remember forever – SA took the series 2 – 0 The ultimate prize is of course “Test” matches – It will take SA some time to get back to the top of the table again.

Kooigoed is mooigoed ... ’n Aaklige virus, gevolg deur longontstekking het my plat getrek. My dokter het gewaarsku teen my hartspier wat aangetas kan word, dit het my beweegruimte ingekort tussen kamer na badkamer en terug kamer toe.

D

Kort voor lank was my bed toegepak met boeke, tydskrifte, sketspapier en “to do” lyste.

Exciting

opportunity for budding artists by Alta Pretorius

Three ladies from Art Bouquet have created an exciting new opportunity for local budding artists to exhibit their work indoors, even if they have never done so before. From left to right: Elena Gelderblom, Marì Geyer and Ina Wessels

followed up on a regular basis every month. The next date will be 26th March from 9:00 – 13:45. For more information, or to book, e-mail artbouquet2015@gmail.com, or phone 060- 6225642. The name says it all: ART BOUQUET ALL SEASONS EXHIBITION – because this will be held indoors, and will not be affected by adverse weather conditions!

T

he Art Bouquet All Seasons Art Exhibition will take place on a monthly basis in the Bosko Centre, Fairview Avenue, next to the cricket field. This is an ideal venue, since artists and their works of art will be protected from the weather. Artists are encouraged to sit there

Elena Gelderblom completes the trio of

Art Bouquet artists. “Creativity is who I am. Through art one communicates to the world who you actually are. Therefore I think artists have a huge responsibility about what they communicate through their work. In this world of hopelessness, we have to start to convey hope. Every piece of work you create carries a message. Somebody out there needs that message so that healing and restoration can take place. My purpose in life is to do just that through my creative work."

and paint, etc. The exhibition space is 3 x 3 meters, and each artist must provide his/her own table, chair, easels, etc. The cost is only R150 per artist. No profit is being made, and tea/ coffee and refreshments will be for sale. The launch took place on Saturday 27th February, and will be

Marì Geyer, Ina Wessels and Elena Gelderblom are passionate about their art, and their art gallery Art Bouquet on the top floor of the Craft Hub in the Village, where their works can be viewed. Each one has her own unique style and preferred mediums of painting, but they all believe that their talent comes from their Creator, and they paint in His honour.

Ina Wessels says: “My paintings are three dimensional; I mainly use traditional water color paint, inks and water soluble pigments with high quality attributes. I also use a special cement supplied by a sedimentologist, who assists me with the ingredients as well as suggestions for certain techniques, textures and mixture recipes, (or porridge, as I have named it). I started painting when we bought a guest house with huge walls which called out for large paintings. Initially I experimented with smaller projects on artist canvas - and moved onto larger surfaces such as bill boards. I experimented a lot, by stacking layers of cement on top of each other, combining it with pigments and transparent paint - developing this unique technique into a winning combination! So far I have concentrated on marine themes: sea shells, underwater scenes, a coelacanth and even fossils of kelp, flowers, and fish. I use my art to convey a story or a message. I am blessed by this talent to give expression to my imagination and inner being, and I thank the Lord for the privilege.”

SPLASH 22

ART BOUQUET ALL SEASONS will host the inaugural event on Saturday 27 February 2016 at the Bosko Centre (Fairview Drive, next to the Cricket Field). Artists to provide own easels, tables, etc for the day. Grab this unique opportunity to get the exposure that you deserve. Book now, and for only R150.00 you can secure your exhibition spot at this ALL SEASONS venue. Space is limited, so do not delay. Artists are encouraged to paint, etc at the exhibition as well. Cut-off date for reservation is 24 February 2016. To book your space and for more information, contact Bernice on 0606 225 642 or email artbouquet2015@gmail.com

Mari Geyer also confirms that her art and music express the desires which God created inside her. “He is a God of detail, and I can only reflect a fraction of that. I have always had a passion for sketching – even as a small child the walls of our house portrayed my scribblings. I believe one should develop your talents, and I just followed my heart. Although I never had formal training, I did follow a few courses to learn certain techniques. Pencil sketching was my initial favourite, but for the past seven years I have completed a few acrylic paintings, most of which I simply gave away to people who liked them. Lately I have started using oil paint, since I love vibrant colours. We should pursue the talents we have received with passion and dedication.”
