Easter eggs, also called Paschal eggs, are decorated eggs that are usually used as gifts on the occasion of Easter. As such, Easter eggs are common during the season of Eastertide (Easter season). The oldest tradition is to use dyed and painted chicken eggs, but a modern custom is to substitute chocolate eggs wrapped in colourful foil, or plastic eggs filled with confectionery such as chocolate. Although eggs, in general, were a traditional symbol of fertility and rebirth, in Christianity, for the celebration of Eastertide, Easter eggs symbolize the empty tomb of Jesus, from which Jesus resurrected. In addition, one ancient tradition was the staining of Easter eggs with the colour red "in memory of the blood of Christ, shed as at that time of his crucifixion."

This custom of the Easter egg can be traced to early Christians of Mesopotamia, and from there it spread into Russia and Siberia through the Orthodox Churches, and later into Europe through the Catholic and Protestant Churches.

Originals Gallery 12 Harbour Road Hermanus Western Cape South Africa

This Christian use of eggs may have been influenced by practices in "pre-dynastic period in Egypt, as well as amid the early cultures of Mesopotamia and Crete".

estled beside a river without an end, (Riviersonderend) between majestic mountains is a tiny town forgotten in time. Greyton provides the perfect weekend escape from the bustle of city life. Its quaint main street, lined with inns, coffee shops, churches and oak trees is a window to another era. The town’s establishment harks back to 1854. The history is littered with stories of settlers bartering with the khoikhoi tribe, rich ancestral chiefs, successful cattle and sheep farmers and wealthy horse breeding brothers from Constantia. All these stories give rise to the country charm which is the main reason that visitors flock to Greyton.

…and breathe DIEP asem. En uit. Herhaal drie maal.

A

Almal werk saam. Niks te doen met ryk of arm, dom of slim, ras of geloof nie. Ek hou styf duime vas… So… Haal asem. ’n Paar voorstelle: Ek gaan NIE ander mense beskinder, beswadder of verwens nie. Ek gaan NIE oor beuselagtighede kla nie. (Sjoe, waar spring daai woord sommer so in my kop in) Ek gaan my NIE bloediglik vervies vir negatiewe of rasistiese aanmerkings in my winkel nie. ‘‘A Lion does not lose sleep over the opinion of sheep.” This month we celebrate Human Rights’ Day. For the most part I’m not much of a fan of the human race. Give me animals any day. Or babies and toddlers that haven’t been conditioned/ruined by society. As I write this President Trump has just found the solution for the massacre of children in American schools. Arm the teachers! I rest my case. Dis nou maar eenmaal in my gene.

? Nou hoekom verwag jy ons moet dit doen? Want dis presies waarop dit neerkom meneer. I try my utmost to cater for all budgets. You can literally buy something for R1.50, R15, R50, a few hundred or a couple of thousand. Point is you can also just pop in and enjoy or simply be inspired. All of this is free. And as long as we have appreciative customers/visitors, Amulet will remain that unique, gorgeous shop in The Old Town of Hermanus with not a mall in sight.

Take a deep breath… the champagne air is on the house…

SKINCARE

Hunting, this Easter! Skin care ingredients can be like trying to decipher a mystery code and are downright confusing. If you’re looking to improve your skin care routine, then finding the best anti-aging skin care ingredient is a good place to start. There are so many products out there on the market but not all are made as equally as the next. Just knowing the right kinds of ingredients to look for will give you a better chance of finding products that are more likely to be effective. Up until the last few years, the most important thing about skin care products was their brand names. If they were a big name in the industry then they had to be good, right? Hmmm, not necessarily. Once the signs of aging start to appear - more thought and research needs to go into the kinds of products you are buying and most importantly, the types of ingredients they contain. So, what are the best ingredients for anti-aging and what is it that they can do?

Retinoids or retinol are one of the most effective ingredients out there for anti-aging and they have the most amount of successful scientific research behind them.

Retinoids and retinol are derivatives of vitamin A and are often referred to as cell-communicating ingredients that work by telling skin cells to behave more like younger, healthier ones. These results in the improvement of fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone, collagen production and smoother, firmer looking skin just to name a few. Retinoids and retinol should be approached with care, as their effective results can come with side effects if not used correctly. Refine’s top picks: SkinCeuticals Retinol 0,5 or 1%, Lamelle RA cream, Neostrata NAG

Niacinamide is another popular ingredient that is added to many anti-aging skin care products. Derived from Niacin better known as vitamin B3 and is also referred to as a cell-communicating ingredient. It has been shown to help increase fatty acid levels in the skin which helps to keep it protected against damage - as well as maintaining its youthful appearance. Niacinamide is also known for its ability to help prevent water loss in the skin and to enhance the skin’s protective barrier. Refine’s top picks: PHformula Vit. B3 Cream

Hyaluronic acid has its good name in the skin care world mainly because of it moisture retaining properties, as well as the fact that it’s used in many injectable types of filler. Its ability to retain moisture has many benefits to the skin including strengthening the skin’s protective barrier and leaving the skin with a fuller and plumper appearance which in turn reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Refine’s top picks: SkinCeuticals HA Intensifier, SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 phformula Hydra Serum Vitamin C has become quite the powerhouse of the skin care world and its benefits are already pretty well known. It has been found to increase collagen production, improve skin discolouration, help skin repair itself and overall leave the skin with a brighter complexion. Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant that can help prevent and treat free radical damage including sun damage. It is most commonly found in the form of ascorbic acid but it can also be found in the form of L-ascorbic acid, ascorbyl glucosamine, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, ascorbyl palmitate, ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate and tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate. Refine’s top picks: SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic OR Phloretin CE, Lamelle CE recharge

Vitamin E is another powerful antioxidant. It can help protect the skin against oxidative damage and reduce the breakdown of collagen. Also known for its moisturising abilities as well as its healing properties and as such is often used in topical creams to treat scars and stretch marks. Vitamin E and vitamin C can be used together to make an even more powerful combination. It is found on ingredients labels under different names including tocopherol, d-alpha tocopherol, d-alpha tocopherol acetate, dl-alpha tocopherol and dl-alpha tocopherol acetate. Refine’s top picks: SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic

Peptides are small proteins made up of amino acids that not only bind moisture but can also stimulate collagen production in the skin. There are many different types of peptides in skin care but the most popular are Palmitoyl Oligopeptide and Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7. Palmitoyl Oligopeptide is known for its ability to stimulate the production of collagen resulting

Refine’s top picks: Lamelle’s full Dermaheal range, Neostrata Skin Active Range

Resveratrol is another potent super antioxidant that is derived

from the grapes that are used to make red wine. It can help protect skin from oxidative damage and research has found it to be particularly effective in protecting against sun damage. It can also help improve collagen synthesis -which in turn can slow down the aging process of the skin. Refine’s top picks: Skinceutical Resveratrol BE

Glycolic Acid: Alpha hydroxy acid works by separating dead skin cells that accumulate and stick together as we get older. It speeds up the cell turnover and as a result, it makes our skin appear rosy with a radiant smooth glow. Simply using glycolic acid every day will help keep your skin looking young and radiant. Refine’s top picks: Nimue Day and Moisturiser Plus, Neostrata Daytime Smoothing Cream Alpha-lipoic acid helps to prevent the signs of aging in the skin while soothing it at the same time. Also known as thioctic acid or alpha-lipoic acid it improves cellular energy production and reduces inflammation. Refine’s top picks: Nimue Alpha Lipoic Ceramides help your skin to maintain its moisture levels, preventing dry or irritated skin. Ceramides are natural lipids that your skin produces and they are crucial components of the epidermis which play a key role in barrier protection of the skin - allowing it to capture and bind water to stay hydrated. Because ceramides naturally decline as we age, you may want to use a ceramide skin care product to prevent redness or itchiness. Refine’s top picks: Lamelle full Serra range Arginine – there are a lot of ingredients out there that claim to be Botox® alternatives. Arginine

is one of them. This ingredient can give instant smoothing results that last for a couple of hours, but it can never replace Botox® injections. These products are best used in between your Botox® treatments. Refine’s top picks: Nimue Skin Refirmer, Neostrata Skin Active Line Lift

Where Do You Go From Here?

Okay, so you know what ingredients to “hunt” for, but does that mean you need to be using all of them, every day? Not necessarily. We recommend creating a skin care regimen tailored to your skin type, age and skin concerns. It makes no sense to invest valuable time and money in products which are inactive, ineffective and therefore make no difference to your skin whatsoever. There is a huge difference in over- the- counter cosmetic products and professional, paramedical products. The aesthetic skincare brands take care in research, not just on the specific ingredient but also the amount and quality used. These products work on cellular and molecular levels in order to be potently effective. Always seek the help and guidance of a professional aesthetic skin care therapist. The results will ultimately speak for themselves.

‘Inflammaging’ vs Youthful Living

T

he word ‘inflammation’ comes from the Latin word ‘inflamatio’, which means to inflame or to set on fire. The term inflammaging was first coined by Italian Professor Claudio Franceschi in 2000 to describe the premature ageing caused by chronic (persistent) inflammation, the fuel that flames the fire of all today’s chronic degenerative diseases, or more positively called health challenges.

What is inflammation? You slam your finger in the car door. It immediately turns red, warms up and starts to become swollen. Why does this happen? Pain serves to alert you to the problem and to keep your finger still. The swelling puts pressure on nerves to make sure you cannot ignore the injury. The redness is your body sending blood to the site of injury. The blood carries the healers, like an ambulance with emergency personnel to the site of injury. All these are the characteristics of the fire associated with acute inflammation. We tend to think that inflammation is all bad but your body’s inflammatory response is vital to the healing process. Inflammation is the immune system troops deploying and each one of the squad members have a specific role to play in healing your finger.

BUT, what happens when orders to the Immune System Troops are not clear? The immediate threat may be over, but they never get the command to retreat and recover, because of some unknown break in communication. The squad keeps on working and inflammation turns from friend to foe, becoming chronic.

own in your wellness food garden! Fresh fruits and vegetables – make seasonal choices, select different types, colours and textures.

The renegade fire of chronic inflammation has been linked to all modern day chronic diseases. These include osteoarthritis, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes, cancer, accelerated ageing, dementia, depression, Alzheimer’s, autoimmune disease, even autism.

Include pre- and probiotics to heal and aid digestion, restoring the balance of healthy bacteria in your microbiome, the tiny universe in your gut.

A taste of holistic, integrative treatment options for youthful living 1. Food as medicine Food provides the nutritional building blocks and fuel for the body and its immune system. Acute inflammation only turns into chronic inflammation when there are imbalances and low levels of nutrients in the diet. Top anti-inflammatory foods to include in your healthy eating plan: complex carbohydrates, whole, raw and super foods; unprocessed, organic, unrefined, fresh, plant based and high fiber foods. Buy organic, at a farmer’s market, or even better, grow some of your

Use coconut oil, olive oil, nuts, grapeseed oil, avocadoes, and more omega 3 essential fatty acids from flaxseed, and fish like sardines, mackerel, pilchards, trout and wild salmon.

2. Basic nutriceutical (nutri-=food; -ceutical = medicine) food supplements as top up to healthy eating to curb inflammaging i. A daily comprehensive antioxidant supplement, with optimal quantities of vitamins A, E, B-complex, C, D, E, bioflavonoids, resveratrol, coenzyme Q10, and many more in one combination of simple elegance and synergy. ii. Calcium and magnesium in the correct ration and in an amino acid chelate form, with vitamins C and D, potassium, boron. Caveat: do not take magnesium on its own as this disturbs the carefully calibrated balance between calcium and magnesium, where both work optimally together in nearly all

biochemical reactions inside the body. iii. Omega 3 in the form of fish oil to supply EPA (eisosapentanoic acid) and DHA (docosahexanoic acid). 3. Herbal remedies: anti-inflammatory help from nature My favourite hot toddy recipe (all inflammation, colds, flu, fever, sinusitis, muscle aches and pains, joint pains): mix a pinch each of dried (or fresh) ginger, cinnamon, turmeric and mustard powder in a small glass of warm water, with raw honey to taste - drink regularly for fast relief. Other useful herbs: Boswellia serrata, Ginkgo biloba, Arnica, bromelain found in pineapples, papain found in paw-paws, Devil’s claw, licorice root, white willow bark, Angelica sinensis, yarrow, black pepper, rosemary, basil, cardamom, chives, cloves, garlic and parsley. Use essential plant oils in a carrier oil (such as almond) to use for massaging sore and aching limbs or muscles, or to put a few drops, undiluted into your bath, with a handful of Epsom salts – e.g. thyme, rose geranium, bergamot, fennel. 4. Exercise Regular, moderate, enjoyable exercise (swimming, walking,

dancing, yoga) reduces inflammation. 5. Sleep Your body replenishes, recovers and refreshes during sleep. The troops do their admin and filing and when you wake up, everything is where it is supposed to be. 6. Chill out! Manage your stress triggers, especially inflammatory thoughts! Stress gives only one command: we are in a war-zone! Most of us are not even aware that this is the constant command we give our bodies, because we are so used to being all tensed-up. Your daily youthful living regime must include practical stress management, meditation and deep relaxation.

Your mind and body as holistic entity Our body is an orchestra composed of talented musicians, the conductor being your own mind. They work together to create the symphony that is our health. Send a clear command to the brain, heart and immune system troops: then sit back and enjoy how well your body responds to this amicable conversation, it’s only wish and prime command to be healthy!

That brings me to the current player heaps that form on the ground with the ball carrier that retains the right to place the ball after being tackled and contact is made. The ball that is being protected so that the opponents who are on their feet cannot play the ball is totally wrong and is becoming a cancer to the game. The current interpretation of the rule is the starting point of the ‘stampkar’ rugby that we are now used to seeing and which is the direct cause of empty stadiums. There is no exciting rugby to see. The referees are very much to blame for this incorrect interpretation. I will write more about this later in the season. We have a new Springbok coach in place. We are just hoping that they are again going to use the excuse of ‘not enough time’ in order to excel…It is really sad that Franko Smit is not being considered as he has done extremely well (added a new dimension to the game) with the SPLASH 10

– Dawie Snyman

This is why this game of rugby is so unbelievably interesting. There are so many facets because each position has its own requirements and each individual player possesses his own talent basis that unlocks other facets or nuances. And then we still get combination play where two or more players play together effectively. Or sections of play where three or more players play together with positive results.

Shimlas and the Cheetas. Results speak louder than words. He added value to the enjoyment of the game to the spectators who are, after all, the clients of the game.

It is on this level where I think the next great rugby coach should be able to distinguish himself. The moment that players start playing together is when defending them becomes a problem. The Stormers experienced this in the second half against Argentina when they really did not know what to do next.

[1992] The docket revealed that a man had broken into a house in Main Road Gansbaai, by opening a window, but the thief was then surprised by a man sleeping in the room just below and then jumped out of the same window he entered from, and ran away. He then tried to steal a little red Alfa under a carport but he was apprehended in the act by the owner and his friends, and then taken to the police station where another person, coincidentally at the same time at the police station to report a crime, immediately identified him as the perpetrator of the Break in at his house.

In Hermanus and surrounds REDZetc currently has 23 top agents operating from Kleinmond to Stanford and we believe it is very important that real estate agents understand and have insight in the local market conditions in which they operate. The economy of real estate is particularly localised and one can never generalise with respect to ‘the property market’. You have to consider local conditions with respect to sales and values as they are influenced by supply and demand in the particular area. Here follows some information regarding the Hermanus property market over the past twelve months from 1 February 2017 until 31 January 2018 (Information researched from the Lightstone Town Reports).

Where can your ‘Soft roader’ go? A ll vehicle manufacturers are jumping on the SUV bandwagon. Even Rolls Royce is introducing the Cullinan. How off-road capable are these vehicles? Some have off road looks, but are they safe to take on gravel roads. Is an increased ground clearance and a more aggressive look enough?

A visit to the old Kalahari, now Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, is something that most people dream about. The distance from Cape Town to the entrance at Twee Rivieren is about 1100 km. Then it becomes dirt roads/tracks. Sanparks consider the tracks/ roads suitable and safe for all types of vehicles. They recommend a tyre pressure of 1.5 bars or less and a speed limit of 40 km/h. The dedicated 4x4 routes are for real 4x4’s only. What are the main differences between a ‘soft roader 4x4’ and a real 4x4? The real one has a transfer ‘box’ that allows for low range or high range selection, real 4x4 mode that locks the center differential, ground clearance of at least 220 mm, beefed up heavy duty suspension components, high profile tyres and some have differential lock intervention for the rear and/or front wheels. Most of the small SUVs only have a higher ground clearance, from 155 to 210 mm. Most, unfortunately for those who aspire to drive on gravel road, have low profile tyres. These tyres are not suitable to be used on gravel roads. The tyre compound is too soft and tyre pressure may not be reduced. Most dirt/gravel roads are badly corrugated, in Afrikaans it is called a sinkplaat pad. (A Google giggle moment is that they translate it as ‘zinc platter pad’). Run flat tyres, when punctured, basically disintegrate on gravel roads. Even when driving at 40 km/h. That is according to a friend that took on the Tankwa in a BMW X5. He lost 3 tyres within 25 km! A soft roader fitted with high profile, preferably all-terrain tyres is a much safer option for a trip to the Cederberg. A knowledgeable tyre fitment center will know what to recommend. Also keep in mind that the safe speed for dirt/gravel road driving is 80 km/h. Take a tyre repair kit along. Damage to the tread surface can be repaired safely. SPLASH 14

Francois van Rooyen

Normally damage to the side wall should not be repaired, only as a last resort. Drive very slowly. .

Low range capability allows a 4x4 to have increased power and momentum at low speeds, mostly used for steep climbs or undulating and rocky terrain. Similarly it provides the best braking on very steep declines. This type of terrain needs to be avoided in ‘soft roaders’, as it not safe and it can also lead to mechanical damage such as a burnt clutch or over heated automatic transmission. Even with the Hill Descent mode activated, as 7 km/h is still too fast to take on very steep declines. Before taking on off road conditions in any type of vehicle, make sure that you understand the basics of over steer and under steer.

The biggest cause of losing control on dirt roads is over steer. It is when the vehicle’s back end steps out, away from the corner, in the opposite direction that the front wheels are turned. To correct it, one needs to reduce speed slightly, turn into the slide, which is momentarily away from the corner. ‘Catch’ the vehicle, stop the slide, turn in, that is in the direction of the corner and accelerate gently.

Under steer is when the nose of vehicle runs wide and refuses to turn in, due to the front steering wheels lack of grip. Again reduce speed, brake gently to loosen the tail, once it follows the nose again, and accelerate gently when the vehicle is under control. This manoeuvre is different for front and rear wheel drive cars. With front wheel drive, it is basically tap off and the moment the driving wheels grip, it is full throttle to pull the vehicle out of the slide.
