The Humble Sock!

Imagine going to school without socks or going to bed with cold feet…trying to keep warm, but your feet are frozen all day and all night.

We all have loads of single socks lying around at home. Odd Socks will take them off your ‘hands’ and pair them up for charity! We’re collecting clean single socks (and pairs) to donate to those less fortunate who don’t have anything to keep their feet warm this winter. It’s been 5 years since we last collected socks to warm a couple of cold toes in Cape Town and now it’s time to start this drive up again and see if we can make the winter a little shorter and more comfortable for a few people. Last year we’ve decided to focus on the Onrus/ Hermanus area with the help of a few generous friends, and I cannot wait to see the outcome.

Collection will be up to end April 2019. We are hoping to distribute the socks in May or June. I’m sure you’ve got a few single socks at home, that missed the trip to sock island. Old, new, plain, stripy, spotty or patterned or even perfectly matched pairs, Odd Socks wants your Odd Socks! We are collecting all shapes and sizes for the next 2-3 months so that we can distribute these as soon as possible. How does it work? All you need to do is collect your single/odd socks and send us a message and we will try to arrange collection. You are also more than welcome to drop your socks at our friends at Whale Coast FM as well as the Splash! Magazine office.

Odd Socks came about one day whilst driving home from the airport and being cold all day from not wearing socks. An advertisement for a charity collecting blankets came on the radio and so the idea of Odd Socks was born. Deciding to go big with the idea, we immediately spread the word via Facebook and Twitter to get the ball rolling. The response was incredible!

Taken for granted, often missing its partner or forgotten on Sock Island!

Look for the sock logo next to advertisers in upcoming issues of SPLASH Magazine, and listen to Whale Coast FM. Businesses mentioned will be dedicated drop off points for Odd Socks.

Spread the word, empty your drawers and keep an eye on Facebook, Splash magazine and tune in to Whale Coast FM

The 16th edition of the Absa Cape Epic will take place from 17 to 24 March 2019 and will be as challenging as ever. Local and international mountain bikers will tackle the demanding eight-day adventure through the Western Cape region in South Africa. The Absa Cape Epic must be completed by both members of a two-person team with only 650 teams allowed to ride the race. The route changes every year, leading aspiring amateur and professional mountain bikers from around the world through roughly 700 untamed kilometres of unspoilt scenery and 15 000m of accumulated climbing.

Full Service MTB Stage Race The Absa Cape Epic is the largest full-service mountain bike stage race in the world. From the day the race starts, 1300 riders need only look after their bodies and continue racing. Everything else is taken care of. An early buffet breakfast is served each morning. Race nutrition, water and isotonic carbohydrate drinks are freely available at water points throughout the route. Trained medical staff are on course and a fully-equipped race hospital is in operation at the various Race Villages. At each stage finish line riders' bikes are cleaned by the Bike Wash team while the Woolworths Recovery Zone restores energy levels with lunch and snacks. From the first to the last stage rider bags are transported between the different Race Villages. Single-person tents with mattresses are provided, where exhausted riders can rest and enjoy a comfortable night's sleep. Enclosed shower units offer riders a relaxing shower after a gruelling day in the saddle. The Rider Lounge is a space where the riders can relax in the shade and it includes luxuries such as: complimentary beverages, local and international newspapers, flat screen TVs, stretching areas, free consultations with the on-site chiropractor and laptop stations with free internet connectivity. The Chill Zone is the perfect place to unwind, enjoy a cold beer, swap race stories and mingle with supporters and fellow riders after a hard day of racing. At the end of each day the Evening Presentation provides riders with a sumptuous dinner buffet, local entertainment as well as video and photographic highlights from the stage.

The Route Changes Every Year The Absa Cape Epic route changes every year. The dedicated route team takes two years to plan where in South Africa's rugged Western Cape province riders will test themselves with a distance of around 700km and 15 000m climbing. What is guaranteed each year is a challenging traverse of the area's iconic fynbos valleys, majestic mountains, deep ravines, indigenous forests, spectacular coastlines and flourishing vineyards. The terrain is as varied as it is harsh - dusty and demanding gravel roads, strenuous rocky climbs, thrilling technical descents, refreshing river crossings and fast forest single tracks. The Absa Cape Epic route gives riders and fans the opportunity to experience the historic and scenic towns in the Western Cape - many of them off the beaten tourist track. More than 40 towns have been visited by the Absa Cape Epic since 2004.

Race village Stage 1 - 2 : Hermanus High School

Kilometres into the stage: 29.5km

Spectator Point B: Lebanon Village

Follow the race:

Distance from race village: 21km

Just off the N2, after Houw Hoek, the Lebanon Village spectator point is the day’s last chance to see how the racing is shaking out. The local children do much to ensure the riders receive a rapturous reception and while the elite men and women will surely fly through the riders further down the field are going to need all the energy they can glean from the cheering crowds.

For all the fans wanting to follow the race throughout the eight days, there is plenty of action at each race village. Along with that, there are some amazing hospitality offerings which will allow fans to get close up to all of the action. A full race village at each venue will allow friends, family and fans to come and engage with their loved ones on each day of the event. Hospitality offerings

Route tours

Want to follow the riders on a stage of the Absa Cape Epic? What better way to experience the excitement and intrigue of the 2019 Absa Cape Epic than by joining us on one of our exclusive Route Tours. We will take you out onto the route to exclusive viewing points where you can cheer on the riders, learn more about the area and soak up the electric atmosphere at spectator points. After some track side hospitality, we return to the finish line to witness the world's best battle it out for stage glory. To get close to the action of the day’s racing, the route tours are the way to go.

Epic flights Experience the 2019 Absa Cape Epic from an exclusive "bird's eye view” in a helicopter tour. Cape Town Helicopters have a range of options for you on every day of the event. Soar over the picturesque Western Cape in South Africa with its beautiful untamed mountains, passes, fields and valleys. Following the riders this way, allows you to see large portions of the route and what the riders are experiencing, which would not be possible unless you are riding the Epic yourself. Watch from above as they conquer the daily trials and tribulations on the technical route.

Spectator Point Information There is no better way to watch the action unfold during the 2019 Absa Cape Epic than at the side of a dusty trail; where your cheers will spur the men and women of the race on as they grind up a brutal climb or bomb down a treacherous descent. Some of the official spectator points for the race are as untamed as the route itself, while others offer fans luxury the riders will be dreaming of as they race by.

Virgin Active Club V at each race village Each race village on route will have a Virgin Active V- club offering for spectators and followers to give the kids some time to enjoy some active play. A host of activities are on offer in a safe and fun environment with facilitators taking care of all the little ones needs.

Spectator Point B: The One at Katkloof The One is a recently completed wedding venue on the Katkloof Farm at the summit of the Hemel en Aarde Valley. Riders need to pass Stage 1’s Dimension Data Hotspot, atop the Katkloof Climb, to reach The One; so fans can expect the field to have spread out. It is a great spot to get a first impression of who the form teams will be at the front of the race, and one where amateur riders may need your encouraging cheers. Website: www.oneheavenandearth.co.za Kilometres into the stage: 43km Distance from race village: 30 Spectator Point C: Solitaire Farm Nestled between the Hartbeesrivier and the Kleinrivier Solitaire Farm is the most remote of all the 2019 Absa Cape Epic spectator points, but it is also sure to be one of the busiest. With the Tesselaarsdal Primary School students being given the morning off classes riders can expect a rambunctious welcome. With 63 of the stage’s 112 kilometres covered lots of challenging riding remains so if you are supporting a rider they will appreciate you driving the 13 kilometres, on gravel, from the R320. GPS Co-ordinates: S34° 20.893' E19° 30.891' Kilometres into the stage: 63km Spectator Point D: S pookfontein Wines With the first riders expected past Spookfontein Wines at 10:45 mountain biking fans, especially those following slower riders, will be able to indulge in produce which makes the Hemel en Aarde Valley famous at Spectator Point D. The wine tasting deck at Spookfontein not only offers great views over the valley below but also of the racing actions, both can be enjoyed with a wine tasting.

And once more with

ENTHUSIASM….

E

k’s plat op die grond. Ja, you and me both, suster. As I write this I’m watching the budget speech. I’m hoping that this is the lowest point in our country’s history and that we can only improve from here. I’m putting that thought out there. Let’s decide collectively that we’re no longer going to be negative about… well, let’s face it, everything. On the upside, the tourists are here. Because South Africa has become even more affordable. If you are an overseas visitor reading this, welcome to paradise. Yes, Hermanus is indeed still paradise. The best month to holiday here is in March. Not so hot as in February (wow, how sweltering was that!) Of course I have no control over climate change… and I can’t take any responsibility if Mother Nature decides to bring us snow. Which frankly I won’t complain about too much. My body wasn’t built to endure temperatures higher than 30 degrees. In fact when I’m too hot (and I don’t mean that in a good way) I become… how can I put this politely… (let me use the euphemism)… grumpy. I give the expression ‘hot and bothered’ new meaning. As with too much heat, I wilt, quite literally, when I’m deprived of beauty. Luckily I live in a beautiful place. A friend of mine, who loves beautiful things and my shop just as much as I do, just posted this incredible quote on Amulet’s FB page. Usually I try to paraphrase something, but this piece about art perfectly sums up my feelings about how I plan to survive the dark times ahead. Here goes: “I think everything in life is art. What you do. How you dress. The way you love someone, and how you talk. Your smile and your personality. What you believe in, and all your dreams. The way you drink your tea. How you decorate your home. Or party. Your grocery list. The food you make. How your writing looks. And the way you feel. Life is art.” Helena Bonham Carter. If you don’t know who she is, Google her. Wonderful, weird and wacky. My kinda woman. And suddenly so many things make sense to me. First of all I have to admit that my grocery list is not art. Maybe because my

Tel 028 313 0359, 4 Broad Str Hermanus

local supermarket isn’t very arty. But now I understand why I have an immediate affinity with most of the women (and men) who walk into Amulet. (Not ‘Omelet’ as a certain non-arty woman recently called it) Like me, they are there for the beauty, for the way it makes them feel. And being an art and beauty addict, I have to keep feeding my addiction. Which is why you will constantly find me out on the road sourcing. (Arty name for shopping, wink-wink.) I have a linen range that can only be described as exquisite art. And my handbags and shoes… well we all know that women simply can’t resist them. ‘If your life is art, live it in colour.’ Another quote that applies to my shop. Don’t fear, I do a little beige. Not much, but if you look hard enough, you will find it. And for the neat freaks, I’m afraid, no sense of minimilism or order in my store. Just an explosion of fabulous. Awesomeness abounds. Are you brave enough to venture in? Of course you are. You’re reading this, aren’t you? Ever since I gave away a leather handbag on a TV program, I’ve been hounded for that particular design. The good news is that I’ve had a few more of those bags made for Amulet and they should be arriving soon. I sincerely hope that they’re not sold out by the time you read this. As my regulars know by now, I don’t have masses of the same product. This is not a supermarket. But then I have several other designs that are equally beautiful. So why are you still sitting there? You know where to find us… Martha Beck is one of my favourite authors. And on one of my Google searches I came across her book, The Joy Diet. The only diet that I’m interested in these days. One thing I’ve learnt is that nothing is coincidental. Her book was exactly what I needed right at that moment. Let me share a few of her tips. And this time I will paraphrase. It’s all about nurturing yourself. Take 15 minutes a day and do absolutely nothing. (tick) Just be quiet. Sit at a window and look at the ocean, the garden, the mountain. Be with nature. Be still. Sit in a pretty place. (tick) Hear your

Hélène Truter

inner voice. Do something that really scares you. Ooooh yes, I like that one. You don’t have to be like everyone else. It’s okay to be yourself. You are unique and special. There’s no one else like you. Why would you want to be like the rest of the world? This is more me than Martha speaking. Treat yourself twice a day. (Martha again) This could be anything. It doesn’t have to be food. Some people just come and stroll through Amulet to feed their senses. (tick) When I started writing this I was feeling a bit flat. To put it mildly. But my mood has lifted. Why? I had to go through photos that I want to add to this article. A tough choice… But the process made me feel much better. That’s what pretty does to me… Let the record show that the two featured linen cushions will work perfectly in my house… It’s taking considerable willpower on my part not to simply load them into my car… But I have a shop to run. So hopefully they will still be here when you come to visit. Looking forward to it. And if you can’t make it to the pretty pink shop in Hermanus you are welcome to spoil yourself online. www.amuletlifestyle.com Happy browsing!

Annette

So … waar staan jy?

Joyce Meyer se gereeld: “I’m not where I want to be, but I’m sure not where I used to be.”

My input? Be kind to others and yourself and just be.

Annette Staan-terug groete

Why Office Workers Need Pilates W

hat do office work, long hours in front of the computer and Pilates have in common? Isn't it enough to get up and make a cup of coffee every now and then or (hopefully) go to the bathroom on a regular basis? No, definitely not. It is quite normal to pull out a chair, sit down and immediately grab the keyboard and start working. But do you ever notice your posture, where are your knees aligned from the hip etc? Let me give you some handy and practical pointers before you start working. Your computer screen should be in line with your eyes. In other words you do not look down or up to your screen. Your head's weight is about 4.5kg. If the weight is not in line with the cervical vertebrae, it 'hangs' in the neck muscles causing tension and pain. And the same goes for the hands and the keyboard. Place the keyboard and mouse in front of you. Do not put the computer in the corners of your desk so that it is necessary for you to turn diagonally towards your computer. Make sure the back of your chair is upright. Do not sit at the front of your seat with no back support. If the backrest is positioned so that you have to lean back to feel it, slide back on your chair.

Anneke Theron Make sure your knees are aligned with your hips. Your legs should not "hang down" from the hip. This puts pressure on the lower back. When working with a laptop / notebook for long periods of time, use it like a regular computer and work in front of a desk. Avoid the chair or bed with the laptop on your lap. When working with the mouse, make sure the hand, wrist and elbow are aligned. Blood circulation to the fingers is very important. If the wrist is constantly crushed for long periods, it may lead to illnesses like carpal tunnel syndrome. In our modern society it is normal to spend extended periods of time in front of the computer/desk. And the sad news is, it is going to get worse. Look at the children, unlimited hours spent in front of a computer, TV screen (gaming), cell phones; while the skeleton is still growing and shaping. We all are desperately in need of ‘movement breaks’ to negate some of the negative impact. However, there’s more you can do if you’re looking to break out of the sedentary lifestyle of an office worker/scholar = Pilates!! Pilates helps you align your spine and strengthens your neck and shoulders. This can help minimize the back pain office

workers experience due to sitting at their desk all day. It can also help reduce neck pain by releasing muscle tension and building up strength. Pilates is also a great way to strengthen your core, which improves your overall posture and prevent the slump posture. The hanging shoulders and sloppy posture go with you when you leave the office, because the brain and body are no longer connected. The brain doesn’t send signals to your ‘frame’ to lift, grow tall through the crown, open up the chest, and tuck in the coccyx, ab connection to spine. And the most important, is the overall stress reduction that comes from regular Pilates exercises. If you tend to carry a lot of stress around and suffer from tension headaches or general muscle tension, Pilates is the answer. Pilates is long-lasting, so you will feel the improvement in your body after you practise Pilates, but also in the office, at home and long after you left the class. It is important to remain mobile, maintain circulation of blood throughout the body and to move oxygen from top to toe and to build new cells inside your body. You only get one body. It is irreplaceable. Treasure it, take care of it. Do Pilates. It’s the right thing to do.

Why it is most important to know where your property’s Title Deeds are

Pam Snyman

Your Title Deed is your only official proof of ownership. The owner of immovable property is in possession of the original title deed unless the deed of transfer has been retained by the financial institution if a loan has been granted on the security of a mortgage bond passed over the property. This document needs to be registered in the owner’s name and signed and endorsed by the Registrar of Deeds. In order to transfer or cancel any real right that is registered in the deeds office, the original deed, such as the title deed or mortgage bond needs to be lodged at the deeds office. For this to happen, the deeds office requires the original Title Deed document. What happens then, if the property owner has lost the original or it has been destroyed? In the past, lost or destroyed Title Deeds were replaced when the owner signed an affidavit stating that the original had been lost or destroyed. This affidavit was then lodged with a copy of the deed that was obtained from the deeds office where digital copies are kept. An application requesting a certified copy of the Title Deed then follows and the original lost or destroyed Title Deed would be replaced by the certified copy. BUT… the process of obtaining original Title Deeds has changed since 25 February 2019! Amendments to Regulation 68 47/1937 of the Deeds Registries Act, published in January, requires a longer, more onerous and costlier route to be undertaken in order to avoid unnecessary delays in the transfer of your property. It is absolutely imperative that owners of property are aware of where to lay their hands on their property’s Title Deed in the event that they want to alienate (sell, exchange or donate) their property. The owner should be in possession of the original Title Deed if the property is unbonded, whereas if there is a mortgage on the property, the bank will hold the original document and you should have a copy.

then lie open for inspection at the relevant deeds office for 2 weeks so that any affected person may object. Only then may the application be lodged at the deeds office. Unfortunately, the method of objecting is unclear as well as what the possible consequences could be. Purchasers of property must always ensure that the transferring attorney provides them with the original Title Deed of the property that they are buying so that they are equipped when they wish to sell their property in future. It should then be kept in a safe location and it might not be a bad idea to obtain a certified copy and to keep that in a different place. And as a matter of interest… what can you expect to find on the Title Deed of your property? •

A detailed description of the property with the registered number of the land, the registration division, district and province as well as the extent of the property

The Surveyor General’s Diagram should be attached as it shows the position and boundaries of the property

The name and identity number of the person/s, legal entity or trust that legally owns the property

The date when the property was last transferred

The purchase price paid by the current owner as well as the reason for having the property transferred to the current owner, i.e. a sale, grant, donation or inheritance

What does the ‘new process’ entail? Your affidavit now has to be “attested by a Notary Public”. Not all conveyancers are Notaries which means that this will result in you having to make an appointment with a Notary which may cause delays and costs. A Notary Public is a specialised attorney who “notarises” documents in a formal recording and certification process that carries more weight than would attach to a normal affidavit signed before a Commissioner of Oaths. Furthermore, notice of the application for a certified copy must be published in the Government Gazette, which must SPLASH 12

Any limited real rights registered in favour of an institution (a mortgage), a property (a servitude) or person/s (a long lease) over the property

Any existing conditions of title or restrictions pertaining to the use of the property, eg. commercial use or height restrictions

An official Deeds Registry Office seal to indicate that the deed has been recorded in the name of the owner and the date.

The system of land registration in South Africa is based on these practices that guarantee security of title and certainty having regard to the processes of examination and registration, the control and monitoring of standards, the public register and information systems and methods of preservation of records. These all contribute to providing security in the eyes of the law and our people. So please check to see if you know where your title deeds are, and if they have been mislaid, ensure that you take the necessary steps as described above before you put your property on the market! WORLD CUP YEAR

2019 In this world cup year there are so many issues that one can think of that can be crucial for SA rugby, its administrators, coaches, players and of course us, the spectators. We have just recently fired the first shots on the battle field of the rugby horizon of 2019. Varsity Cup is in full swing and the Bulls taught the Stormers a few rugby lessons. They scored a whole series of tries and treated the spectators to a champagne rugby performance. If they can build further on this performance, I can only think that Loftus will draw the crowds as of old again in future.

T

he Stormers’ game against the Lions was a total fiasco with just unwarranted luck causing a win at the very end of the unruly match.

How Rassie intends compiling his team is still a question mark, but it is pleasing to see that André Pollard is looking good and that he has recovered from his injuries. There has never in the history of the game been a team who has won the world cup without a well-known and experienced flyhalf. In 1987 New Zealand played Mark Cox, in 1991 Australia had Michael Lynagh, in 1995 South Africa selected Joel Stransky, in 1999 Australia played Stephen Larkam, in 2003 England had Johnny Wilkinson, in 2007 South Africa played Butch James and Francois Steyn, in 2011 New Zealand selected Daniel Carter and in 2015 New Zealand made use of the services of Daniel Carter once again. The question that arises is who is going to be the flyhalf for the Springboks in 2019?

Dawie Snyman

I am concerned about the lock position because our locks are never active on the playing field long enough without injuries. Etzebeth and Loot de Jager have really played too little rugby over the past two years to enable an objective opinion. We badly need two hard players here that cannot only do damage, but they must also be able to receive some knocks without those knocks leaving too much of an impression on them. There is nothing, I repeat nothing, so demoralizing for a team as when they believe that they have now made a real impression and the opponents handle the situation as if nothing has happened. That brings me to the next group of people that I believe are going to have a huge influence on our game. The referees. I had a discussion this morning with someone with a vast knowledge of the game and who has coached at international level about this aspect of the game and I raised my concerns about the current situation that we are facing. Unfortunately, it can easily be seen that I am overly critical, but it is not the case. I have a passion for the game and only the game is my is my biggest and highest priority. Anything that harms rugby in general or the development of the game irks me and makes me see red! A good example of such a situation was the Varsity Cup match between Maties and Tukkies. Stellenbosch received approximately 7 penalties against them when the Tuks were attacking aggressively in the ‘red’ area of the Maties. No yellow cards were given and the logic result was that the game turned extremely negative. The game was not important for Stellenbosch at the time, but no player that knowingly transgresses the rules of the game should be allowed to play on. Full stop.

Lekker kyk.

Wicus van Wyk

The Fifties was when Rock and Roll (often written Rock ‘n’ Roll or Rock & Roll) began and it is often chosen that 1954 is the year of Rock and Roll’s birth. But it was really thanks to a lot of trends that came together after World War II. It is a musical genre that originated and evolved after the war during the late 1940’s and early 1950’s from musical styles such as blues, rhythm and blues, jazz, boogie, and even gospel and country music. If you listen to blues music of the 1920’s you will hear elements of what was to become rock and roll and can also be heard in country records of the 1930’s. It originated in the United States and the genre did not acquire its name until 1954. Fats Domino is widely regarded as the pioneer of Rock and Roll. He was asked about the music’s origins in a Fifties television interview. “Rock & roll is nothing but rhythm & blues,” he responded, “and we’ve been playing it for years down in New Orleans.” This is a valid statement: All Fifties rockers, black and white, country born and city bred, were fundamentally influenced by R&B, the black popular music of the late Forties and early Fifties. The Drifters, Hank Ballard and The Midnighters, Chuck Berry, Big Joe Turner, Little Richard en Bo Diddley is maar net ‘n paar van die voorlopers. Various recordings dating back to the 1940’s and 1950’s have been cited as the first Rock and Roll records. A number of sources have considered the first to be ‘Rocket 88’, which was written in 1951 by Ike Turner and recorded by himself and his backing band, The Kings of Rhythm, but credited to his saxophonist and the song's vocalist Jackie Brenston. Sam Phillips was the producer, who later went on to found Sun Records and discover Elvis Presley. Sam played an important role in the development of Rock and Roll in the 1950’s. He also found Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, where he produced recordings by Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Howlin' Wolf. Alan Freed was ‘n Amerikaanse plate joggie in Cleveland, Ohio, en hy het die frase ‘The Rock and Roll Session’ gebruik om ‘rhythm and blues’ en ‘country’ musiek wat hy gespeel het te omskryf. Dit is afkomstig van die liedjie ‘My Baby Rocks Me with a Steady Roll’. And why is the “and” sometimes written as ‘n? That’s called an apocopation – the omission of the final sound of a word. May Rock and Roll never die…
