Because most of the learners require one-on-one attention, educating and caring for children with intellectual and physical disabilities costs a lot more than it does for mainstream learners. About 84% of the 61 children at Camphill School are drawn from local disadvantaged communities, where families can pay little or nothing towards school fees, while the government subsidy covers only 20% of the budget. Funding is, therefore, an ongoing challenge for the School. It is deeply indebted to the Hermanus community for its enthusiastic and sustained support and by participating in the Golf Day, golfers can kill two birds with one stone (or golf ball): have fun and at the same time, help Camphill School.

Man en vrou is tog makaars beste vrinde.” Voorwaar goue woorde – nog net so waar soos toentertyd. My nooi is in ‘n nartjie, My ouma in kaneel, Daar’s iemand ...iemand in anys, Daar’s ‘n vrou in elke geur! Indien jy belangstel in die doen en late van die Vriende van Afrikaans, kontak ons gerus by vvafr@ sun.ac.za of 021 8083744/5. Mooi loop! Amanda de Stadler

Ns. Mans is soos rooiwyn: hoe ouer hoe beter.

growing old is no laughing matter

But as lon ga your sens s you keep e of humo ur, everythin g wi l l b e o kay.

Now if I can only remember where I put it… ‘No, not my glasses, the humour darling.’ ‘What?!’ ‘Sense of humour! Oh nevermind. You can read my article later.’ What?! Where are you?! When you first buy a double storey house the last thing you think of is that you and your husband will spend later years screaming non-sensical phrases at each other as you try to hear what your other half is mumbling… this is how we avoid the issue that our hearing is going down the drain. We simply accuse each other of bad diction. But who are we fooling? It happened last week… or was it the week before that? Nevermind when. Fact is, it happened. And I was stunned. I was approaching a shop and saw an elderly woman coming my way. She looked kind of familiar and I was about to greet her when I realised I was in fact reacting to my own reflection in the shop window! Yes. Completely idiotic, I agree. What freaks me the most is the fact that I saw an ‘elderly woman’. That couldn’t have been me. It’s fine to be thought of as elderly when you’re ninety… I’m not ready for that label yet! Cougar maybe… But not elderly. Please not. Not now. Not for the next forty years at least. If Cher can do it, so can I. Early morning as I gingerly toddle off to the bathroom as the bones slowly warm up, I keep reminding myself of a friend’s pearl of wisdom. ‘If it doesn’t hurt in the morning, it means you are dead.’ Okay the good news is, I’m alive then. Then why so grumpy? Because I’m not a morning person, okay!? Okay. Luckily nor is my moody teenage daughter. And Percy is too deur die mis to be in any kind of mood. The only morning creature is our lively Lab who happily wags her tail when she spots our bleary eyes staring through the windows trying to figure out what the day looks like outside. Useless exercise, really. I don’t have my glasses on. Of course I have absolutely no idea where I put them. Why would I suddenly remember such trivial stuff after years of religiously searching for my glasses at least five times a day? Of course I ask my husband if he’s seen them but he just nods vaguely in my direction. Percy cannot speak any sense before he’s gone through his morning bathroom ritual and had his first cup of tea.

By

My ma is nou in haar middel sewentigjare, alhoewel sy dit blatant sal ontken.

By jou.

Genetic brain profiling with aidan leaker @ proactive Proactive Fitness is proud to announce the inclusion of Aidan on our growing team of fitness professionals. Aidan will work alongside us on a consultation basis and she can be contacted on the details below.

What is a Genetic Brain Organisation Profile?

It is a physical assessment during which the Genetic Blueprint of Brain dominance is determined in an individual. The Genetic Dominance profile indicates the dominance of hemisphere as well as the dominance of the four modalities, namely the hand, foot, ear and eye. This enables us to distinguish certain personality traits, your strengths and areas for improvement as well as specifically pin pointing factors unbeknown to you that may cause you to go into a form of stress.

Why is it so important to know what factors may cause you to stress?

During stress the non dominant hemisphere of the brain will temporarily shut down, leaving an individual literally sitting there with half a brain and only being able to utilise the functions of their dominant hemisphere. The Left Hemisphere of the brain is where all copying, memorising and recall occurs while your Right Hemisphere is where all your visualising, conceptualising and creative thinking occurs. These specific functions are used in conjunction to successfully perform certain tasks.

What will a profile tell you?

A genetic profile will predetermine behaviour during normal functioning, how information is heard and seen, concentration span, patience levels, hyperactivity, interpersonal skills, and which sports you will naturally excel at. We also successfully detect any potential learning difficulties. Also specialising in v School readiness tests v Study skill techniques v Subject choice guidance and genetic matching

v Career guidance and genetic matching v Eye muscle strengthening v Blood group testing and diets

Botox™ Myths

Demystified:

ANTI-AGEING CLINIC

Separating the Fact from the Fiction.

M

any a day I discuss a patient’s fears and questions about having Botox™. They’ve decided they need to do something about the wrinkles; but have heard a lot of stories, which has put the fear of God into them. In order to empower patients to make their own decisions, here are a few home truths about Botox™ and Fillers.

Lindi Prinsloo Aesthetic Practitioner 3. Botox™ causes headaches: Cell: 082 782 7983

1 out of 100 patients can experience a headache after Botox™. This is usually straight after the procedure and resolves within hours. However, in 99% of patients who suffer from headaches, Botox™ actually cures the headaches. It is for this reason that Botox™ is now recognised and used extensively as a treatment for migraines.

4. Fillers can move after placement and distort my face: Older fillers such as silicon are hard substances which could move after placement. These are still used by plastic surgeons but more for reconstructive surgery where anatomy is much distorted due to trauma or birth defects and large hard volume is required to restore shape. The fillers used by Aesthetic Doctors on the face, are made from gel(Hyaluron). They are placed at different depths, depending on the area being treated, and then moulded into the shape required. Once moulded the filler generally does not move as it settles in the tissue into which it is placed. Any Hyaluron filler can also be instantly dissolved, should the patient not be happy with the treatment.

5. I heard that botox™ is addictive and i will need more and more as time goes on.

9 months.

1. Am i putting a poison/toxin into my body?

Actually it’s the opposite. When patients first have Botox™ it may last 3-4 months. This is because the muscles are strong. If the patient returns for the treatment in good time (i.e. before the Botox™ has worn off completely and the muscle has become strong again); they will require less and less Botox™ and the treatment will last longer and longer. Our aim is that the patient eventually only needs to come twice a year for their treatment. Studies show, that with regular treatment the Botox™ can last between 6 and

6. Botox™ injections are very painful:

No! Botulinum toxin was discovered by a disease, caused by a bacteria, which paralysed muscles. However, the product which we inject with is not that bacteria. Laboratories take the molecule (not the disease causing bacteria); and it is sterilised, vacuum dried and purified. The protein is purified by dialysis and acid precipitations. That is, for us non lab rats; a protein copied, purified and put into bottles. The estimated dose of the Botox™ versus the bacterial disease is 1: 3 million respectively. Secondly, many many medicines are derived from poisonous plants or microbes (bacteria, viruses etc). With digitalis and atropine (from the deadly nightshade plant), the plant is fatal but the medicine lifesaving. Morphine is taken from the same plant as Heroin. In fact, if one looks at statistics, aspirin (Disprin, Ecotrin ) is far more dangerous, considering the number of patients allergic to the product. Thirdly, Botox™ is injected locally into muscle and works on that muscle to relax it; thus, there is practically no absorption into the blood stream and hence no possible effects in the body. And lastly, Botox™ is used in staggering amounts in new born babies born with muscle spasms or cerebral palsy. One must thus conclude that it is a safe, locally acting injection. After all if the FDA approves, who are we to argue?

2. Are botox™ and filler the same thing?

Each individual has different pain thresholds. Botox™ needles are tiny and are the same size needles used daily by Diabetics. Most first time Botox™ patients always tell me it was nowhere near as painful as they expected. The majority of patients opt for local anaesthetic cream to numb the skin before the procedure.

7. I heard botox™ can be used for other medical indications: FINALLY, THIS ONE IS TRUE… Botox™ has been found to be very useful in treating the following disease processes. (You will notice that a lot of the illnesses mentioned below, involve some form of muscle spasm.) Cerebral Paulsy Spasticity, Sweating, Migraines, Urinary incontinence, Muscle Spasm, Strokes, Multiple Sclerosis, Anal Fissures, Squint or Lazy eye, Twitching Eye, Prostate Disease, Sweaty Hands and Armpits(Hyperhydrosis), Jaw Grinding,Chronic Back and Neck Pain. Article is written by Dr Michelle Emett, GPSI Aesthetic Medicine. Dr Emett’s practice is now permanently based in Hermanus at the well-known Refine Anti-aging and Laser Clinic. Follow Refine owner, Lindi Prinsloo’s advice and tips on facebook (www.facebook/RefineClinic and click “like”) or subscribe to their newsletters by emailing info@refineclinic.co.za.

No, Botox™ is injected into the muscles of the face that are overactive. It relaxes the muscle and hence prevents wrinkling from occurring and softens the fine wrinkles that are present. Filler, on the other hand, does just as its name suggests…it fills hollows in the aging face and plumps out wrinkles. To test which procedure you need; look in the mirror and make different facial expressions. The wrinkles created by facial movement can be treated with Botox™. Now stand with the face relaxed. The deep wrinkles and hollows are treated with fillers of varying thickness. In summary, Botox™ is wrinkle PREVENTION; FILLER is TREATMENT

Reshape

MEDICALLY ASSISTED WEIGHT

LOSS PROGRAMME

How does this work?

Hemel & Aarde Village ● 028 316 3845 ● adeleputz@gmail.com

► What is Reshape? Reshape is a weight loss program that primarily focus on fat loss. By using Lipolytic in combination with a very low calorie diet you will lose up to 30% more abnormally stored fat as opposed to a reduced calorie diet on its own. ► What is Lipolytic? Lipolytic is a natural product that will trigger lipolysis (breaking down fat) and blocking lipogenesis (absorbing energy into fat cells) if combined with a reduced calorie diet.

LONDON TRAINED BEAUTY THERAPIST Sh'Zen stockist.

► How does it work? The combination of the medication and the specially formulated eating plan will trigger the body to tap into your abnormal fat stores as a source of energy. By tapping into your fat reserves you will release a substance called leptin that will trigger your satiety centre in your brain and give you a feeling of “fullness”. Lipolytic also increases your serotonin (happy hormone) levels thus increasing your mood. The end result being: • Weight Loss (fat loss) • increased energy levels • Decreased hunger • Increased in mood ► Can anyone do the program? Because it’s a natural product it is safe and has no side effects. However you have to see your doctor to rule out any medical cause for your weight problem.

TASTE BUD PLEASURES

Good food @ Madré’s Kitchen What a delightful find! Upon driving up towards Madré’s kitchen, there was already a sense of warmth with the brightly painted red and grey striped roof, despite the overcast Easter Monday. Situated on the picturesque Sir Robert Stanford Estate, we were welcomed by the friendly Madré, owner-manager, and her team of ladies that would take care of us for the afternoon. We were welcomed by Madré and instantly felt relaxed being surrounded by nature’s beauty. After enjoying coffee, a little exploring was in order before our starters arrived. The location is certainly made for exploring, from browsing in the country grocer, a tasting in the wine room to a stroll through the veggie & herb garden – all can be done before, during or after enjoying a meal at Madré’s kitchen. That’s the thing – there is a relaxed vibe about the place and understandable why so popular by locals and visitors alike. It’s a real treat for the kids too with a jungle gym, trampoline and a large lawn all in view from your table.

The food was simply divine! Madré served us a trio of starters: Spicy butternut & ginger soup, bobotie spring rolls accompanied with tomato & onion sambal, chopped banana’s and chutney, and the third starter, a firm favourite we were told and soon discovered why, camembert wrapped in pickled vine leaves with farm fresh stone ground bread. The generously portioned starters were paired with Sir Robert Stanford Chenin Blanc and this was just a taste of what was in store for us for mains.

The meals genuinely lived up to their beautiful presentation and tasted as good as it looked. The portions were generous and can definitely be described as comfort food at its best. The afternoon left us travelling back home with our tummy’s full and hearts warm. Highly recommended to those that want to enjoy a beautiful setting, farm style meals with a local twist and a relaxed, homely atmosphere...and who wouldn’t want that!

Before the main course was served, Madre explained to us that the menu changes weekly and that all the ingredients are locally sourced. The ingredients used are also seasonal and this was quite evident from the dishes we were to indulge in. We were served four main courses on the menu that week, starting with sweet sticky duck with blue berry sauce, mash, green beans & sweet potatoes and prettily decorated with promengrate seeds. A beef burger, or beef tower it should rather be called – based with a thick aubergine slice, homemade beef pattie, oozing with hummus, all served on a crispy bun with potato chunks and mayo & mustard seed sauce. The third course was the water blommetjie and anchovy risotto – the ‘wild’ combination, as Madre put it, was delightfully unique and a taste bud treat. The last meal we were treated to was Hake served with mash & tomato, aubergine and caper sauce. As fish lovers, this too did not disappoint, and we were left with the impossible task of deciding our favourite dish – it was all too good!

ignore. Reinhard decided to leave the wine industry and disappeared off the scene for over a year. During this time he toured and mountaineered through South America, tasting wines and just enjoying a sabbatical. As we all know in the wine business, once the bug has bitten you its very difficult to take those boots off, and Reinhard found himself back in Walker Bay, and back in the wine- maker’s boots. INGREDIENTS

500ml vegetable stock 250g diced butternut 100ml coconut milk 50g butter; 2ml green curry paste 6 mussels; 1 pinch saffron; 2-3 fresh basil leaves 1 pinch salt

METHOD

According to Reinhard the Merlot currently being produced on the farm is something extraordinary and worth waiting for! Perhaps it will make him more famous than his Siberian Husky, Blue, who currently gets all the attention on the farm.”

For the sauce Boil butternut in the stock on medium heat until tender. Blend the butternut with the stock. Add the coconut milk to the butternut stock. Boil the butternut and coconut mixture until it has reduced by a third. Mix curry paste into butter in a pan. Add the mussels and fry on medium heat for approximately 2 minutes. Add the saffron and basil leaves. As the butter begins to brown, add the butternut and coconut mixture to the pan. Leave on the stove to simmer for 5 minutes. Season with salt.

MISSION’s HOUSE kunsgallery Onrus Rivier

OUDTSHOORN.

’n duisend onverskillighede.

omfort, the beauty of imperfection and time-worn elements are the core of what has come to be known as the Shabby Chic style.“ Shabby” - faded and dilapidated can be considered “Chic” - elegant and stylish.A grandeur of the evidence of life engrained into fabric, furnishings and objects. The end result of Shabby Chic is to achieve an elegant overall casualeffect as opposed to the sentimental Victorian.A form of interior where furniture and furnishings are chosen for their appearance of age, signs of wear and tear or new items distressed. A sensible appeal to a washable, portable way of modern living. The style is peaceful, practical, super comfy and inviting.Allowing for the mixture of many tastes.Soft opulent yet cottage, with an effected feel. The miss-matched style of furniture or combination of styles is eclectic.Shabby Chic is light, airy, warm, welcome and full of quality items. It’s a collection of much loved and used items that have so much more than just a function.A collection that have style and design.Recycling of old furniture and fabric where the characteristic of the pieces are enhanced. Or new pieces been distressed to achieve the appearance of antique or wear and tear. A Fun collection of beautiful things, some old, some new. We talk about slipcovers, ruffles, whimsicalprettiness, mischievous, quaint with a bit of fantasy. Or let’s call it temperamental and creative. A vase of flowers from the garden, a bit wilted, a few petals missing. Yard sale treasures. Old pieces salvaged to get a new life. Plats or ornaments, chipped in places but still charming. Wrought icon slightly rusted. All elements of a effortless inviting feel.Colours tent to be soft. Palatable tones of sea foam, mint and celadon green (which remind of the Chinese old porcelains); dusty roses;pale sky blues;ivories, creams and greys that appear to be muted by age. Floral patterns and pastels. Shabby Chic cannot be bought. It’s a style that is appreciative of the beauty of process and evolution. The look lies in the detail of things.A marriage between laid-back breeze seaside living and the romantic prettiness of English country living. Shabby Chic is a term that is been tossed around for several years now.But the style started in England with the decorating of large

country houses.Warned and faded sofa’sand old painted furniture. The early forms were rather grand but the style has evolved with time.Range from 18 century Swedish painted decor to the French Chateau to American shacks or cabins. Popular in the 1980’s in America.Metropolitan cultural cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco with directed influences form Mediterranean cultures such as Provence, Tuscany and Greece. The trend for homes of the wealthy on the AmericanEast Coast Martha’s Vineyard, Cape Cod, Cape May and some of the Hamptons estates.A style popular to decorate the famous Cape Cod- Style homes. Unlike some decorative styles that work only in certain types of environment, Shabby Chic is a style that is versatile and bounty free with a all sign philosophy of comfort and faded splendour. Shabby Chic have no rules. Rachel Ashwell’sShabby Chic Couture Stores took America by storm and follow soon to be liked in trendy spots of Notting Hill and other neighbourhoods. “The Prairie” in Texas, AshwellB+ B and flagstone of her Shabby Chic style has become now a tourist attraction and a piece of heaven for all to experience the lifestyle of Shabby Chic. Rachel Ashwell’s new book Couture Prairie and Flea Market Treasures are a feast for the eye, with lots of ideas on the joy Shabby Chic will bring into your own home. Also sure you will find a lot of Shabby Chic atThe Small Gallery in Onrusriver.

umin is one of the herbs mentioned in the Old Testament in Matthew as a tax payment: ‘Woe unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites! For ye pay tithe of mint and dill and cumin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law.’ Native to Egypt, cumin seed have been found in tombs and burial chambers dating back thousands of years. Not only was it a much-loved flavouring, but it was grown in medicinal gardens in ancient Egypt and in the Mediterranean area where it was used by the monks to treat the sick. Widely cultivated from those early beginnings across Europe, cumin’s Family Um belliferae decline in popularity was possibly Species Cu due to other herbs in the spice trade minum cym inum Origin Nea that were easier to grow and to come r East, India Plant short by. ► CULTIVATION It needs well-dug moist soil enriched with compost. Sow the seeds between green peppers and chillies as these crops will protect them and give a little shade. Fine leaved and spindly, cumin is delicate but well worth growing.

► PROPAGATION Sow thinly scattered over well-dug moist soil in full sun. Rake the seeds in and cover with a few leaves to keep them shaded during germination. ► HARVESTING AND PROCESSING Once the little plants are sturdy, you can immediately start using the leaves and flowers for curries, stirfries and drinks. Allow the seeds to dry on the plant before reaping. ► COMPANION PLANTING Plant with green peppers, chillies and brinjals. Cumin enhances their taste. ► USES OF SAGE •Culinary Cumin is one of the important ingredients in curry, in spicy pickles and in sauces, marinades and dips. In Europe cumin seeds are baked in breads, cakes and biscuits and in the Middle East bread dipped into olive oil and then sprinkled with a few seeds of cumin (and coriander and caraway too if liked) is a favourite in many areas. The much loved Za’atar varies from area to area, but this spicy, wellcrushed mixture is taken everywhere, stored in little jars. Its basic ingredients are cumin, coriander, caraway, thyme and coarse salt and cardamon, mint and mustard seeds are sometimes added. A marinade of olive oil, cumin and peppercorns, mustard, fresh coriander leaves and lemon juice is superb for chicken, beef, mutton and fish or for

those huge flat brown mushrooms. •Medicinal Cumin seeds and fresh leaves and flowers aid circulation and help to clear toxins from the body. In a tea, it is immediately soothing and unwinding, and wonderful for a stuffy nose and sore throat and to treat heartburn, flatulence, colic, bloating, digestive spasm, belching, incessant wind and as a stimulant for the whole digestive process. To make the tea add 1 teaspoon of crushed seeds to 1 cup boiling water, stir well and stand 3 to 5 minutes. Sip slowly and chew the seeds. Indians use cumin tea to treat insomnia, to ease the symptoms of a cold, to bring down fever and relieve arthritic aches and pains. Cumin tea has traditionally been given to a nursing mother to increase her milk production and in so doing it improves the baby’s digestion - you just won’t have a colicky baby if the mother takes a cup of cumin tea twice a day. In Indian herbal medicine cumin is made into a paste and applied mixed with onion juice to scorpion stings and infected insect bites like mosquito bumps.
