Yvonne Webster is a very talented self-taught artist living in Vermont. She was born in Queenstown during the Second World War and from as young as three years of age Yvonne fell in love with Art. However, she could not pursue her dream of becoming an artist or studying art due to the lack of funds and training facilities. One day she went to visiting a friend and as she was about to say her goodbyes, her friends gave her 52 paint brushes & loads of oil tubs….this was a sign. Yvonne had very little confidence in her painting and only started to paint fulltime after her retirement.

Don't push Mommy's buttons! ‘For account enquiries, press one, for data bundles, press two, for stolen phones, press three…’ I press three. Another unemotional pre-recorded voice asks me to enter my phone number. Which I do. Upon request I repeat the number. Then unceremoniously a loud BUSY signal blasts into my ear. What? Hello? What now? I press four… irrational, I know, but surely these people can’t just dismiss me like this. Oh yes they can, dear. And they do so for the next two days. I will not bore you with my numerous follow up calls… suffice to say that even ‘press five to speak to an operator’ didn’t help much. You’d think speaking to a live person would make a difference. Think again. Said person merely puts you through to some other unknown number where an electronic voice asks for your number again! Twice in fact. And then while you wait listening to senseless special cell phone and data offers and life passes you by, you are eventually simply and without any warning… cut off. Beeeeeeep. By day three, my husband, sensing a meltdown and serious hormone dysfunction took over and managed to block my number and blacklist my phone. Whoopee. I am now a woman without communication but stuck with a cell phone contract which… yes, I kid you not… I haven’t been able to terminate because when I phone the Yello! People and I ‘press one for account enquiries’ the electronic voice can only come up with the option of ‘enter your number followed by the hash key.’ The disconnection is swift. I am obviously a bad person because I have entered a blocked number. This is merely an assumption on my part because as yet I have not spoken to a single living soul. And you can’t argue with an electronic voice. Ah… But there is another way. Email has a trail. We Google the relevant address. Hubby writes an uptight letter telling them we want to terminate our contract because of their terrible service. We receive a reply almost immediately. Yay! We should have gone this route a long time ago. The euphoria is short lived. The email (clearly a standard computer generated message) thanks us for our continued support (seriously? Clearly no one bothered to read the content of his irate email) and assures us of a response within one to five days. It’s been a week. No one cares. Is this what has become

of humankind? We can only communicate by pushing buttons? And in turn ‘they’ (the voices) are pushing my buttons! I sound like a crazy person, don’t I? I have been waiting in vain for the following option: ‘for desperate clients seeking assistance from a real-life human being with a brain and enthusiasm please press 9, or even better; ‘for livid clients wishing to vent their anger about our incompetence please press zero…’ I bet you’re waiting for me to come up with the killer punch-line. How I showed them. How I beat the system… Alas. I am a failure. I am without phone but with a never-ending debit order for a blocked number on a blacklisted phone which I can’t stop…. Because I can’t get hold of any humans! Sounds like a plot for a very bad Hollywood movie… Have you noticed how many blockbuster movies deal with aggressive heartless machines taking over the world? I’m beginning to get it. Maar ek is ’n boeremeisie. En ek gaan nie lê nie. So intussen beswadder ek maar die spul en hoop iemand gaan vir my ’n oplossing kom bied want ek gaan nie langer ’n maagsweer kweek omdat die sisteem nie voorsiening maak vir eerlike vlees en bloed met emosies en humeure nie.

Wat my betref, hierdie Moeder van een dogter, drie honde en vier katte wil net een ding hê vir Moedersdag…. ’n einde aan my selfoonkontrak!

Anti-Aging Medicine World Congress Having been invited to attend the Anti- Aging Medicine World Congress in Monaco this year; I am pleased to report back some of the highlights and the recent developments in Aesthetic and AntiAging Medicine across the globe.

Eyebrows were also a big topic of discussion at the congress. The aging process ensures older ladies lose hair; whereas men have hair overgrowth of the eyebrow area. Just by filling the temple area and shaping the brow by permanent makeup; tweezing or using botulinum toxin in the forehead area; can be significantly rejuvenating. And aging brows are definite tell-tale signs. Hair transplants, also, are becoming more popular and with the creation of robotic technology we can look forward to much quicker transplants. Transplant robotics will be cutting down procedure time from 8 hours to around 1-2 hours. Threads (bio-resorbable sutures); known as the Silhouette Lift or one stitch mini lift; received a lot of attention from both the dermatologists and plastic surgeons. The trend is to offer patients minimally invasive threads instead of going under the knife. The general consensus from the panel of experts presenting, is that thread lift is a safe and effective procedure which presents minimal downtime, minimal side effects and long lasting results. There is a trend for more plastic surgeons to become involved in aesthetic procedures as they see their patients rather opting for the minimally invasive procedures than undergoing surgery.

he congress, held in Monte Carlo under the High Patronage of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco attracts 9 000 participants coming from more than 120 countries. There are over 300 leading international companies, showcasing the latest products; technologies from thruought the world.

There were a handful of South Africa’s best Aesthetic Doctors who were fortunate enough to mingle with doctors and professors who are currently considered to be the key opinion leaders in their respective fields. I am happy to report that South African Aesthetic practices, and certainly those offered in our clinic are still considered the best clinical practice for optimal results. For the doctors, there was a great focus on the anatomical aging process in the face. While up to a few years ago we brushed over general changes in facial fat and bone; we have now anatomically defined the structures (i.e. multiple fat pads) in the face and research has shown us, that even these fat pads diminish at different speeds. Some people will get hypertrophy (overgrowth) of fat and skin and these patients are far more difficult to treat than the patients who get tissue hypotrophy (shrinking). Patients who typically get sunken eyes, cheek areas and chin, respond very well to treatment with fillers. Fillers remain the mainstay of facial aesthetic treatments and there must now be over 25 different companies supplying fillers worldwide. Many years ago collagen fillers wreaked havoc as these moved and created deformities. The trend then moved to Hyaluronic Acid fillers which we use extensively today. The limitations of these fillers are that they are not permanent, depending on the thickness of the gel that is used it needs to be topped up every 6 to 18 months. We can look forward to the launch of new fillers made from polycaprolactone. This substance not only stimulates production of your own collagen, but also has the capacity to last as long as 4 years.

Again it was re-emphasised, that combination therapy is the key to delivering best results. By combination, we mean that firstly the patient’s skin colour, tone and texture should be improved and either before or after; deeper structures associated with aging, such as hollowing of cheeks, sagging jaw line etc. should be addressed. One of the professors gave a good example of a slim lady of 65 who goes in for a face life. If the surgeon does not fill the cheeks and restore the normal anatomy; the patient will be left with a very flat face and tight skin. A sight none of us would care to wear! This combination therapy includes radiofrequency for skin tightening, chemical peels for skin colour and texture, laser for specific skin conditions such as pigmentation as well as laser rejuvenation. Carboxytherapy is still shown to be highly effective for skin tightening, scar treatment, acne and rejuvenation procedures. In the coming few years, I think we can look forward to more emphasis on Anti-aging physicians who manage prevention of chronic diseases instead of treating with pharmaceuticals. We can look forward to sending our DNA to Switzerland for DNA analysis. Followed by a program of diet, exercise and nutraceuticals, specifically targeted towards our personal DNA profile. Again, with an emphasis on prevention and lifestyle management. We can look forward to using our own blood platelets; a technique known as PRP (platelet rich plasma) to provide stem cells and growth factors. We will regenerate our own hair, collagen and healthy skin. The world of Aesthetic Medicine is moving in leaps and bounds and we can look on excitedly to see when the next international developments reach our shores. Introducing the NEW Amethyst Range How to keep your Le Creuset cast iron skillet or cocotte in tip top condition: 1. Always cool a pan for a few minutes before washing in hot soapy water. Rinse and dry thoroughly. Do not fill a hot pan with cold water or plunge into cold water as thermal shock damage to the enamel may occur. 2. If there are food residues fill the pan with warm water and leave to soak for 15 – 20 minutes, then wash in the usual way. Nylon or soft abrasive pads or brushes can be used to remove stubborn residues. Do not use metallic pads, or harsh abrasive cleaning agents that contain bleach or ammonia as these will damage the enamel and polished trims. QUICK TIP Although interior discolouration is very normal over the course of a casseroles lifespan, it will not affect the cooking performance. To lighten these stains, boil up vinegar or lemon juice in your Le Creuset casserole or soak overnight with a dishwashing tablet dissolved in water. Light stains or metal trail marks (caused by metal tools) can also be removed with Le Creuset Cookware cleaner known as Pots and Pans Cleaner - available at Goozi Kitchenshop. An occasional conditioning clean with this product will also retain the new appearance and polish of your pans.

Nog een van die ATKV se prestasies In die jare dertigs is daar ‘n stuk grond op Hartenbos gekoop vir spoorwegwerkers vir ‘n vakansieplek. Danksy goeie finansies het hierdie belegging mettertyd gelei tot 7 vakansieoorde waarvan die inkomste gebruik word om kuns en kultuur te bedryf. Nou het die ATKV wéér ‘n dapper stap geneem en tot die aftreebehuisingsmark toegetree. Dawid Malherbe vertel meer oor hierdie nuutste ontwikkeling:

ie meeste van ons het die toonsetting van FA Fagan se gedig, “Ek het ’n huisie by die see”, al gehoor. Hierdie treffende liedjie deur Laurika Rauch maak nogal ’n nostalgie en hunkering na ’n huisie-by-die-see in ’n mens wakker. En met Negester Onrusrivier kan jou huisie-by-die-seedrome nou ’n werklikheid word. Onrusrivier, met sy heerlike klimaat, pragtige natuurskoon, strandmeer, lieflike see-uitsigte en wandelpaaie – om nie eers van uitstaande wynlandgoedere en gholfbane te praat nie – is vinnig besig om ’n gesogte bestemming vir vyftigplussers te word. Daar is byvoorbeeld die gedeelte met die fasades van Kaapstad se Lang-, Plein-, Breë en Langmarkstraat of Stellenbosch se Dorpstraat. ’n Ander deel spog met ’n moderne plaashuisstyl. Derdens is daar ook eenhede in ’n kenmerkende Kaaps-Maleise styl. Met Negester Onrusrivier word ’n leefstyllandgoed vir vyftigplussers bekendgestel wat ’n uitsoek-bestemming sal wees vir diegene wat jare lank hard gewerk het en ’n rustiger lewe in die vooruitsig stel. Dit is nadat manlief uiteindelik met ’n gekerm, gesoebat en beloftes ingegee het en die duur banke, wat jy so begeer het, gekoop het. Hy het sowaar ook, met die aanmoediging van die oulike verkoopsdame, die koffietafel wat by die banke pas saam gekoop. Maar nou dat die begeerlike nuwe banke en koffietafel in jou sitkamer staan, lyk dit net nie reg nie. Jou man se twee erfstoele pas nie in nie en die duur lamp wat jy vir moedersdag uitgesoek het werk glad nie. Al jou versamelgoedjies lyk so oorbodig dat jy dit maar eers in n boks in die garage gepak het. Die oorspronklike droom en begeerte lyk al hoe meer na ’n nagmerrie en jy loop heeldag met die nare gedagtes dat jy dalk die verkeerde keuse van banke gemaak het. Iets wat jy gladnie kan begryp nie, want dit het dan asemrowend in die winkel se vertoonkamer gelyk. Jy het dit keer op keer in jou gedagtes gesien staan in jou eie sitkamer. Jy kan ook nie waag om iets te sê nie, manlief sal deur die dak spring. Hy hyg nou nog na sy asem oor die lot geld wat hy moes betaal. Toemaar Mevrou, jy is beslis nie die enigste vrou met die gruwelgedagtes nie en sal ook nie die laaste wees nie. Daar is baie goeie redes hoekom jou oog hartseer boodskappe brein toe stuur as jy nou na jou sitkamer en die duur inhoud kyk. Die rede is stillering… Jou droombanke was haarfyn gestilleer in die vertoonkamer, sodat dit onweerstaanbaar kan lyk. Die Integrasie van hoogtes, vorm, kleur en teksture vertel ’n hele storie. ’n Harmonieuse geheel word dan gevorm ’n Plek of “mise e scene” waar die toneel afspeel en waar karakters hulle stories uitleef. Die oog word gelei op ’n ontdekkingsreis. Die draaiboek maak voorsiening vir Mevrou, die hoofkarakter se eie individualiteit. Dit bly ’n visuele ervaring wat die oog nooi om ritmies deur die vertrek te dans. Die intensie word van buite na binne gelei; van plafon, na mure, na inhoud, na vloer. Saam met die argitektonika van die vertrek word ’n balans geskep. Elke hoekie word gestilleer om ’n storie op te maak. Hoekies vir dans en speel, stilwees en lekker kuier. Daar is ’n rede hoekom die ornamente presies gegroepeer moet wees en die stoel skeef moet staan.

Die argitektonika van die vertrek is beklemtoon met herhaling van kleurkombinasie. Die stillering van dekorstukke skep die admosfeer. So word die “mise e scene” stukkie vir stukkie aanmekaar getoor. Die kershouer se glas filter lug deur na die fokuspunt.

ugby per se is niks anders as enige ander onderwerp wat ’n mens sou aanspreek nie. Die vraag is dan hoekom het spele ontstaan en wat was die behoefte van die mense van daardie tyd? Spele was aktiwiteite wat in vredestyd deur soldate beoefen is en gebruik is om hul tyd mee te verwyl. In dieselfde konteks is dit baie interessant om te sien dat daar al hoe meer en meer tyd in ons samelewing vandag is wat aan sport op ’n voltydse basis aangewend word. Het ons dalk te veel tyd op hande? In Dr Craven se finale en derde akademiese Dokersgraad “The Development of the Major Games” wat hy op die rype ouderdom van om en by 80 verwerf het, maak hy melding van spele wat reeds 2,000 jaar gelede in China aangeteken is. Vandaar het verspreiding plaasgevind en verskillende dissiplines het in verskillende rigtings oor die wêreld voorgekom. Rugbyvoetbal is n terme wat baie algemeen in die wêreld gebruik word. Daarom is dit interessant dat die woord “fussball” wat op verskillende maniere gespel is, in die 14de en 15de eeu algemeen in literatuur voorgekom het. Die word “fotebal” met verskeie vebuigings in spelling het in verskillende dele van Europa voorgekom. Hierdie benaming het die indruk valslik gewek dat die spel net met die voet gespeel is. Dis egter alles behalwe waar. Nader aan die waarheid is die feit dat elke streek sy eie reëls gehad het waarvolgens hule “futball” gespeel het. Die spel ‘voetbal’ is dikwels geassosieer met ’n opgeblaasde blaas wat as “follis” bekendgestaan het en vir meer as 500 jaar deur konings van die tyd as onwettig verklaar is, maar die skole het voortgegaan en die spel gespeel. Dit het kinders en onderwysers nader aan mekaar gebring, euwels bestry, deugde ontwikkel en die liggaam opgebou. So was dit dan ook dat die skool in die dorp Rugby in Engeland waar William Webb Ellis op skool was, ’n groot bydrae gelewer het in die onwikkeling van die spel en sy reëls. Maar so was daar baie ander skole ook wat ’n bydrae gelewer het. Tot en met 1863 het die skop en dra van die bal in die spel algemeen voorgekom. Dit was dan ook verskillend in verskillende streke en is gespeel volgens reëls wat voor die aanvang van die wedstryde tussen die spanne ooreengekom is. Op 24 November 1863 het die voorstanders van die “Cambridge Rules” wat die skop van die bal bo die dra van die bal verkies het, veroorsaak dat die skeiding tussen die skoppers van die bal en die draers van die bal gemaak word. Op 8 Desember 1863 onttrek die Blackheath groep hulle aan die vergadering nog voordat die dra van die bal bespreek is. Dit het die vorming van eenheidsreëls vir nog 8 jaar vertraag. Eers

Dit was dan ook as gevolg van die eendersheid van reëls wat in beide rugby en sokker voorgekom het. Die legende het dit so dat William Webb Ellis in 1823 die bal gevang het en in plaas van ’n skoonvang te vang wat hom die reg sou verkry tot ’n vryskop, nie die skoonvang benut het nie maar dadelik die opponente aangeval het deur te hardloop met die bal. Dit was dan ook teenstrydig met die dag se reëls soos ooreengekom vir die spel van die dag. En rugby word ’n hardloopspel. Ons is nou in ’n besondere jaar op die rugbykalender deurdat daar vanjaar weer om die William Webb Ellis trofee meegeding gaan word in die 8ste Wêreldbeker-kompetisie. Die veld waarop ons vandag speel het ook sy eie geskiedenis gehad. Aanvanklik is daar op straat gespeel aangesien die strate wyd en oop was. Daar was nie baie mense nie en baie spasie. Die spel het gou skade veroorsaak en die spelers is verwilder na ooper ruimtes toe. In baie gebiede is die spel verban en konings het wette gemaak om die spel te voorkom. Skole het altyd ruimtes gehad en universiteite ook. Kerke het ook spasie beskikbaar gemaak omdat hulle meriete in die spel vir die mense gesien het. Die spel het altyd tussen dorpe of graafskappe plaasgevind. Die begin van die spel was halfpad tussen die dorpe of graafskappe. Vandaar het die veld gestrek so wyd as wat jy wou speel. Eers in 1896 word daar reëls neergelê dat die veld met vlae aangedui moet word. Kort afskoppe het ’n probleem veroorsaak en die 10 meter skop kom vanaf die vroegste dae, maar in 1905 word dit in die reëls ingeskryf en op die veld aangebring. Eers so laat as 1931 is die 10 meter lyn verleng tot by die 5 meter lyn. Dit was altyd net regoor die middel van die veld gemerk waar ingeskop is. Die doel van die spel was om die bal tot by ’n sentrale plek (doelplek) in die dorp te speel. Elke span moes die bal van die middelpunt tussen die oppponente se dorpe tot by sy eie doelplek speel. Later waar spanne in dieseldfde graafskap teen mekaar gespeel het, moes die bal tot by die kaptein se huis gespeel word. Die spel word dan daar by die doelplek be-eindig en die bal word daar doodgedruk. Dis vandag nog die enigste wettige manier om die spel te stop sonder dat jy benadeel word (wanneer jy ’n drie druk). Die bal moes dan ook daarna deur iets geskop word. Geen punte is verwerf voordat die bal nie deur die aangewysde ‘doelpale’ geskop is nie…deur die hekke, bome, huise, of pale. Die gebruik van doelpale is dus baie oud. Dit kom reeds in die 17de eeu voor. Die grootte van die veld was aanvanklik tussen streke maar het later in die 19de eeu gewissel tussen 200 en 120 meter x 100 tot 80meter. Rugby is vandag nog soos voorheen ’n spel van fisiese kontak…dus aanval teen verdediging. Die doel is net vandag om die bal dood te maak deur dit dood te druk in die doelgebied van die opponente en nie by jou eie huis nie! Dan verwerf jy die reg om na die pale te skop om die doel te vervyf. In die ou dae is punte alleen toegeken as die skop suksesvol was. Die spel is vandag 15 teen 15, maar in sy mees eenvoudigste vorm is dit ’n een op een spel. Hierdie is dan teen die agtergrond as basis waarteen ons in komende artikels die spel sal bespreek. Die breër perspektief behoort ons in staat te stel om van die ewolusionêre pad waarlangs die spel ontwikkel het, tot die 15 of dan nou 22 teen 22 (reserwes ingesluit) tot en met die een-op-een mini-stryd wat op die veld plaasvind, te evalueer.
