The story of Nicole the Famous Great White

icole, a female Great White Shark of 4 m was first sighted and named in September 1999 near Dyer Island. Because Nicole was identified with having a very unique Dorsal fin, it was noticed that she visited the Dyer Island area on a regular basis. Sporting a very inquisitive nature she would more often than not, surface and eyeball the boat and the sometimes excited clients. Nicole was tagged on the 7th of November 2003. A PAT tag, (Passive Archival Tag) was used which records and stores information such as position, depth and water temperatures. Once the tag detached itself from the shark, the stored data was sent via satellite to Dr Ramon Bonfil in New York, (Wildlife Conservation Society). The immediate message that was sent out was that

Nicole had gone to Australia in 99 days, 11 000 km from where she was tagged. This amazing journey from Africa to Australia made history and Nicole became famous. 5 years prior to being tagged,Nicole was a regular visitor to the Dyer Island area and the hope of seeing her again was paramount. On the 20 August 2004 Nicole had yet again visited Dyer Island, travelling 22 000 km in just over nine months. Michael C Scholl the dedicated researcher and part author of South Africaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s GREAT WHIT SHARK, a must to read, has urged all seagoing farers to help find Nicole. As Nicole showed regular visits from July to December means that this is the best time to find her.

Dan is daar die vrou wat nou die dag ‘n tantrum gegooi het omdat sy nie ‘n middeltjie het nie. Sy kla dat haar broeke van haar lyf af val. Shame. Sy het ‘n middel, wat sy nie het nie, is heupe. Ek soek ‘n vrou op aarde (behalwe sy - wat nou daaroor gaan staan en kla). Geluk is kwessie van persepsie. Iets wat jou doodongelukkig kan maak, kan my nogal vreugde verskaf. Hoekom is dit so moeilik om gelukkig te wees? Is dit dalk omdat ons verwagtinge van ware geluk te hoog is? Vra jouself af. Wat maak my gelukkig? Mmmm. Dink ‘n bietjie. Lang stilte. Nie so maklik soos dit klink nie, né? Baie mense glo sukses en geld maak jou gelukkig. Gestel jy wen/erf ‘n hoop geld… Natuurlik gaan dit eufories voel, vir ‘n rukkie. Maar jy gaan nog steeds grumpy wees as jy nie behoorlik geslaap het nie. Die honde in Bosplasie/Onrus/waarookal gaan nog steeds onophoudelik blaf, die verkeerslig wat vir ure rooi bly, gaan nog steeds op jou senuwees werk… en ongelukkig gaan dit nog steeds harde werk en oefening kos om daai winterlyf in shape te kry. Duidelik dat geld niemand lank gaan gelukkig hou nie. In daardie opsig is die lewe darem regverdig. Die rykes is nie noodwendig gelukkiger as ons gewone sterflinge nie.

I don’t know why I find it so funny. But I couldn’t stop laughing the first time I read it. Maybe it’s not that funny. Maybe it has to do with my current frame of mind. Maybe I’m in a good space right now. Maybe I’m happy. Huh?... Sjoe… Nou hoe het dit gebeur? How to find happiness is one of life’s major issues. It’s right up there with world peace, food shortages and alas, the Kardashians. Many self-help books have been written about happiness, therapists the world over make a living/a killing in search of this blissful but elusive state. And here I sit on a sunny Sunday afternoon feeling lazy, content and dare I say it, happy. Baie mense is deesdae so negatief dat ek half skuldig voel om te erken dat ek heel gelukkig en tevrede is, dankie. Niks dramaties het gebeur nie, ek het nie ‘n spul geld gekry nie, inteendeel my geldsake is effe benard, maar my kop is op die regte plek – ja bo-op my lyf waar hy hoort, maar ek het die winter se swartgalligheid afgeskud, ek het besluit om die huidige negatiewe vloei van slegte nuus te sif en eenkant te sit. Natuurlik word ek kwaad oor al die korrupsie en die SABC wat hulle eie CEO moet dagvaar omdat hy homself onwettiglik ‘n miljoen rand verhoging gegee het. Dit terwyl die opvolgreeks van Swartwater wag omdat die spul nie hulle sake in orde kan kry nie. Maar dan kyk ek na die positiewe. Die Munisipaliteit het geluister na die inwoners en die parkeertariewe afwaarts aangepas. Baie dankie. Dis die klein dingetjies… Give credit where credit is due. (Maar nou moet ek vinnig moan – ‘n vriendin van JHB het die Hermanus museums gaan besoek – dit het nie veel vir haar happiness hormone gedoen nie – in fact she was completely disgusted with the state of the places and wondered what the local tourism bureau was thinking!)

Happiness is essential for your health. It’s been proven. Scientifically. It’s a fact. Unhappy people get sick more often. They’re already living a miserable life. And if you’re constantly telling yourself (and everyone else) how terribly unhappy you are and how terrible your life is, it’s inevitable that these negative messages start affecting your body. One of my regular customers walks in (every time, without fail) telling me how terrible she looks and how hard she works and that she hasn’t washed her hair in weeks and she can’t wait to sell her business… needless to say her situation hasn’t changed in the five years that she’s been coming into Amulet. Funny thing is, she’s a good-looking woman, I don’t notice the dirty hair – until she tells me about it. The day she walks in with clean hair I will probably not notice it, seeing as I’m expecting her at her worst.

Happiness is a choice. Whatever life hands you (or throws at you), it’s your attitude that determines your reaction to a particular event. You slip and fall in a public place. You’re not hurt, but your ego is a tad bruised. You can either curse whoever is closest, blame the uneven surface, whatever… or you can simply see the funny (albeit embarrassing) side of the situation and laugh. However if the laughter causes intense internal pain or bleeding best you call an ambulance… According to the experts there are a few factors that can improve your chance at happiness. Spend time with people you like. (Oops, tough one if you can’t stand your co-workers, housemate, partner). I would suggest that you claim hearing-loss to limit inane/ idiotic/ depressing conversations. If you’re a telemarketer, you have my sympathy, not only because you can’t use the hearing loss excuse, but because yours must be the most despised career choice on earth – you have my permission to be desperately unhappy. Get outdoors more often – which is code for exercise more. Summer is here and we (and I’m just as guilty) have no valid excuse not to spend time outdoors. Stop complaining about the lack of parking. Walk to your next destination. Listen to music. This I get. 100%. One of the best things about my happy place is the music. Customers love it too and always ask for the name of the CD. The CD doesn’t exist. It’s merely a compilation of Amulet songs – inspiring songs that make us feel good and feed the soul. All part of the Amulet experience. No charge. Come on, does that not make you happy? I have a few ‘happy’ tips of my own. Don’t overthink it. Just be. It’s not that important what other people think of you. The world can be amazing if you are slightly weird/strange/ different. Life is much more interesting if you have a dirty… okay let me rephrase… fertile mind. For instance… A woman enters Amulet. She complains that she can’t fit into an Xtra large. She blames her weight problems on her unhappy childhood. Pretty soon I’m just as depressed as chubby. Another woman enters. She claims: I’m fat because my body can’t store all this personality. I like her already. Have a brownie, girl. Your life is your message to the world. Make sure it’s inspiring. Happiness will follow. See you in my happy place!

Die Afrikaanse Taalraad Die grondwet van Suid-Afrika skep die geleentheid vir elke amptelike taal in die land om ’n eie taalraad te hê. Die Afrikaanse Taalraad is in 2010 in Wellington gestig na ’n lang aanloop van raadpleging met alle belanghebbende partye. Besoek gerus die ATR se pragtige webwerf (www.afrikaansetaalraad.co.za) vir volledige inligting. Op 29 Augustus het die ATR Vrouedag gevier met ’n honderdtal Bloemfonteinse vroue. Dit was ’n heerlike oggend puik gereël deur een van die ATR se direksielede, Magdie de Kock. Die hoogtepunt van die oggend was ’n lekker gesprek met Chris Vorster, skrywer, akteur en tans dosent by die Universiteit van die Vrystaat. Hy het die tema, “Die vele gesigte van Afrikaans” uit ’n interessante hoek bekyk en vyf van die gesigte waarmee hy hom nie vereenselwig nie, uitgelig: 1. Die voorskriftelikes wat suiwer Afrikaans najaag (m.a.w. daar is net een soort Afrikaans en Engelse invloed moet ten alle koste geweer word) 2. Die afdwingendes wat orals en altyd ononderhandelbaar op Afrikaans aandring 3. Die intellektueles wat slegs ‘hogere’ Afrikaans gebesig wil hê 4. Die eksklusiewes wat slegs ‘wit’ Afrikaans erken 5. Die singendes ( wat net grou, blou, pou en kou kan rym) wat glo hul menings oor Afrikaans is gesaghebbend

This is sufficient to operate a TV with its associated DVD player and decoder, a PC with its WiFi modem, and a light or two. An additional battery will double the time these items can be operated or allow additional items to be operated (e.g. more lights). The Kits with two batteries allow more flexibility in the range of equipment that can be operated. For example, more lights can be connected and small appliances can be operated for short durations (e.g. a small travelling hair drier), always remembering that this will result in a drain on the battery. An average load of 500 W will exhaust the batteries in a 2.5 hour load shedding event. These kits are suitable for wiring into a distribution board to supply some or all of the lighting circuits in an average house, allowing use of any lights in the house during load shedding, again with the proviso that the more lights used at once, the shorter the time until the batteries become exhausted. The larger kits have integrated charge controllers allowing solar PV panels to be connected directly to the inverter. The inverter’s programmable controller ensures that the batteries are preferentially charged using solar power and transfer the charging to mains supply when there is insufficient solar energy to keep the batteries fully charged. This makes

these inverters ideal for those applications where there is an intention to progressively scale up from load-shedding back-up towards off-grid by the addition of solar panels and additional batteries. The axpert 3000 VA / 2400 W 24V inverter is particularly suited for progressive upgrading towards an off-grid system. This inverter should be installed and connected into the distribution board to selected circuits. The inverter is of sufficient capacity to allow the operation of most or all of the lighting circuits and plug circuits in the house, so, within the storage capacity of the batteries, life can continue normally during power outages. Cooking, space and water heating from the inverter are not advised unless large battery capacity is installed. The entry-level kit with only two batteries will discharge quickly if a large load is connected to the inverter during mains supply, but is offered as a low cost option for those who wish to upgrade. The total load applied to this kit during power outages should be limited to a maximum of 500 W to ensure that the batteries will not be exhausted during a 2.5 hour load shedding event. Larger systems, including three phase systems can be custom designed. Which option is right for you? Affordability could be a factor. Simple plug-andplay systems typically cost between approximately R6 000 and R10 500, depending upon the capacity required, and require no installation. The systems from the Greenhouse in this category all use “uninterruptable power supply” inverters. This means that whatever is plugged into them will continue to operate through mains power interruptions. Installed back-up systems include the same inverters used for the plug-and-play systems, or more sophisticated inverters that are equipped to allow the addition of solar PV panels and/or wind generators. They will be connected to some circuits in the distribution board, typically lighting, security system, and the plug circuits for the TV and computer with associated DSTV decoder and WiFi modem. The cost of these installed systems ranges from about R6 000 to R42 000 depending upon the capacity required to supply the items you want to power. There is an additional cost, for wiring modifications needed to segregate circuits in the distribution board supplied from the inverter system. Hybrid systems range in cost from about R30 000 upwards and off-grid systems from around R80 000 upwards, depending upon capacity required. The inverter needs to have a capacity equal to the sum of the power required by all the items you will connect to it at once, plus a safety margin of about 30% to allow for transient currents during switching; When working out what size inverter system to buy, consider replacing inefficient appliances and lighting first, for the most cost-effective solution. I did say in my previous articles that we will evaluate what I have said at the end of the World Cup to find some form of common ground on the matter of the standing of the game regarding individual players, development of players and game plans. It has been mentioned in the past that the game is about the consumers of which the spectators are very important and secondly about the players playing the game.

Die spel Rugby is ‘n wonderlike medium wat ons almal as toeskouers en belangstellendes volg. Vir seker het ons verskillende opinies oor baie sake. Dit moet ook so wees en dit maak sake baie interessant. Belangrik is egter dat die fundamentele beginsels van die spel belangrik is en belangrik bly.
