ongratulations to Splash. This is the 100th issue. Congratulations to me… I have written close to 100 articles. I’ve been part of this publication nearly right from the start. Thank you to the customers who pop in to tell me that they enjoy my somewhat off the wall humour. Time to look back and reflect on The Good The Bad and The Ugly. Ugly? No such thing exists.

When we bought the business way back in 2010 Percy and I had absolutely no idea what we were letting ourselves in for. In fact we were under the false impression that we were buying the building! Yes, we were that clueless. At the time I was still a TV Director on Binnelanders (Kyknet Series,) and our official opening date was to be 6 December 2010. I was still working in JHB and Percy had to man the shop on his own. Luckily with the help of Talitha Neethling (who today runs her own successful businesses). Percy was so terrified at the time that he vowed that he would hide in the bathroom and instruct the customers to just leave the money on the counter. In spite of this haphazard start, several petrol hikes, computer crashes, the recession, depression, riots, general negative sentiment, we are still here. In fact I even had to expand the shop because we’re bursting at the seams. As is Hermanus. We are a privileged bunch... Hermanus is arguably the prettiest sea-side town in the Western Cape. Small enough to feel like everyone knows you. Big enough that you don’t have to travel all the way to Cape Town to shop. In fact, many Capetonians drive all the way here to shop in Amulet. Ditto for return visitors from Gauteng and even a couple of overseas fans. We are blessed with more Art Galleries and unique one-of-a-kind-shops than anywhere else I know …These establishments far outnumber the amount of security companies as seems to be the norm these days. Oh and the Whales didn’t get the memo that there was trouble in paradise a while ago… They’re here in their droves! Jaaaay!

The Good Ek kry my flair and mooimaak instinkte van my Ouma Helene. As klein dogtertjie het sy my waardevolle lesse geleer. 1 ’n Dame verlaat nooit die huis sonder lipstiffie of ordentlike onderklere nie. (Deesdae sou ek ’n selfoon by die lysie voeg) 2 ’n Eenvoudige ete proe baie beter aan ’n mooigedekte tafel. 3 Belangrikste les van almal: Do something creative every day, and you will live a long and happy life. 4 If you aren’t creative yourself, surround yourself with creativity… it has a life force of its own. Hence the steady stream of customers seeking inspiration… which in Amulet’s case is free. 5 Don’t wait to be old to become eccentric… I’ve been eccentric since my teens.

the Bad The bad would be those sour-faced humans who unfortunately feel obliged to share their negative energy with those around them. However, over the years I’ve learnt to block them out… and you can quite literally block them on Facebook when they start posting upsetting photos of atrocities which quite often didn’t even take place in South Africa. Be very careful of what you read on social media these days… If I had to believe everything that was posted on a local Whatsapp group (I’ve since removed myself due to the constant barrage of negativity) I would’ve fallen into a deep depression about the bleak future of Hermanus . Yet: Here I am, watching the most spectacular sunrise… yes, I’m up. The days are too glorious to be sleeping late! And there’s a whale in the distance dancing and showing off.

and the Pretty! Wow… where do I start? I will say it again… Unashamedly. I work in the prettiest shop in town. It’s a girl thing. (Granted, some boys get it as well.) Our spirits lift when we are surrounded by beauty. At least that’s what happens to me. The moment I unlock the door, turn on the music and the coffee machine (in that order, I can’t live without music) my heart lifts and I just want to dance. Which I often do – dance as if no one’s watching! And even if they are, who cares. Feel free to join in. I’ve just realised November is the month of Black Friday. Which in Amulet’s case will be Pink Friday… which means Specials! Jaaaay! Watch my Facebook Page. November is also Movember, but I won’t be sporting a moustache this year. (ha-ha) One of the first articles I wrote for Splash back in 2011 was titled: Eighteen till I die! Still relevant today. I refuse to join the purple rinse brigade… Although purple hair is very trendy these days… It’s all a matter of perception. A few pearls of wisdom regarding the positives of getting older: My eyesight isn’t what it used to be. Therefore, I have a hazy and softened vision of myself in my mirror in the morning. (Or possibly the mirror needs to be cleaned – is that really important?) Luckily my husband has the same vague image of me therefore I’m as attractive as the first time we met. I certainly have no intention of cleaning his glasses. Why ruin the blissful dream? On the downside, I’m constantly looking for my glasses because my short-term memory has become as vague as my failing eyesight. On the upside: I get lots of exercise running up and down the stairs looking for the damn thing. Well not exactly running, don’t want to exhaust myself… I’m no spring chicken you know. Ah… and lo and behold… they are on top of my head. The glasses. In case you got lost in my ramblings. If someone really irritates me I can simply pretend to be hard of hearing and ignore the idiot. If your teeth hurt, you can take them out. In fact, you can send them in for a service without having to leave the house and eat ice cream for the rest of the week and not feel guilty about it. Apparently there are some negatives attached to getting old, but fortunately I have a useless memory therefore I can’t remember one of them! One thing you shouldn’t forget though, is to pop in and come and say hallo! xx

Uit die pen van A day out … There is just something about the ocean’s sound, the smell and the salty taste in the air. For me, Hermanus will always be the best place to experience just that. So, when a business trip took me over the mountain, I just could not let the moment go by without mixing it with my own share of pleasure. I love radio and every chance I get to be behind the microphone I jump at it, be that as presenter or guest, my happy place is on air, interacting and sharing. What a treat to have both on the same day. An added bonus was the breakfast at my favourite spot – Pear Tree. Great food and an awesome view. Wink wink … this might have a sinister meaning! As Ambassador and Project Assistant for Hanna Charity & Empowerment Foundation Cape, I gladly share our vision, mission and scope. The organisation and everything it stands for, lies very close to my heart. For me it is an honour and a privilege to be associated with the cause formed by the actress, Hanna Grobler. May I brag? Just a little bit…?? She has been awarded by Eikestad Nuus (Stellenbosch) with an award – Inspirational Woman of the Year. Hanna has a heart of gold and her passion for reaching out started when she was only a child, and it has never stopped growing. There is a whole lot of heart in this beautiful woman. The foundation is proudly 5 branches strong, working in communities that have been neglected and where the need is ever challenging and increasing. Going into these communities, reaching out and helping does more only help them, it is rewarding just seeing the thankful smiles and hearing the happy laughter of kids – this feeds my soul. I like to use the example that for only R25, the price of a cappuccino, you can feed a group of kids for a whole week. I would say that that is worth sacrificing one coffee shop visit. Thank you to both Whale Coast FM and Heidi for allowing us to share our passion on Oggendjoernaal. We left the Overberg with an open invitation – for you to let us know about a community in need, where we could visit and perhaps assist in addressing their needs as well. For us to help others, no matter their race, age, colour or beliefs, we need your help as well. You don’t have to give or do a lot – it just needs to be done. Salty greetings. Annette SPLASH 6

THE PARTIAL DECOLONISATION OF ADRIAN LOUW First thing I heard as I emerged from the clouds of sedation. ‘’Mushroom’’. First thoughts; MUSHROOM! Mushroom cloud. Nuclear explosion. Death. Radiation… The doctor breaks my morbid thoughts; …that was the shape and size of the polyp we removed. we will send it to pathology to see if it is malignant. He gave me a thumbs up, which was either good luck or the size of the mushroom polyp.

Adrian Louw

It was malignant. The Big C. CANCER. One then prepares for surgery. It is the way. I had to take quite pleasant shakes and the last 12 hours nothing by mouth, not even water, to cleanse the colon.

SEE YOUR ASS.. For only the second time in my life I had a slinky stainless steel snake- camera up my back end, but this time I was quite awake and watching on a monitor. I was pleasantly surprised at my shining pretty, pinky clean colon, all billowy, pillowy, the doctor said wow, lovely and clean, and steered the expedition even further. At 75cm the nurse told him, it was closer to 45cm doctor and he somewhat reluctantly reversed and soon found, the remnants of the cancerous polyp and where the evil mushroom polyp was excised. I could see for myself its angry yellow base!

TATTOO TIME! The doctor then gave me my first tattoos. Seriously, with actual tattoo inks, still using this amazing camera mounted remote controlled robot snake, he marked the two sides of the part to be cut out so that the surgeons could see where to snip. Old school marking the spot with an X! My friend Jacques Mario Robert the Tattoo artist need not have to fear competition from the surgeons, as the doctors ‘’artistic result’’ was more Jackson Pollock than Michelangelo.

SURGERY AND THE CIA 23rd August I awoke in the ICU with tubes in just about every orifice [except my ears!] Drips, five, above my head and discharging into my neck, directly into the vein. Nil per mouth. [But you get incredibly thirsty though the drips are supposed to feed your every need.] I begged and cajoled for ice cubes to suck and my skin went very dry. The constant thirst was strange and unsettling. A horrible plastic thing was jammed in my throat and that was the first to go but I was immobile and felt very tired yet could not sleep as the incredibly attentive staff fussed over the twelve beds in the Intensive Care Unit. I spent seven terrible nights there, the screams of other patients, the constant noise and interruptions at weird hours. 04;30 two persons, armed with a bucket and sponges. Car washers? Hello, time for your sponge bath, meneer! 05;00[ just having dozed off] ‘’Pathology, come it is time to draw blood again. I swear these vampires must have sucked ten litres of my precious vintage A pos. I felt like a prisoner of the CIA and was ready to confess to anything on the fourth day. Then the catheter was pulled from my uhm,’’ urinator’’ and the freedom to amble with your drip in tow, to the bathroom, was a little victory. I stole a sip of water, when the guards were not looking. You are at the complete mercy of the I C U and boy they SEE YOU. They are excellent and very professional and their job is not to comfort and yield to every patient demand but keeping you alive and recovering. That they do exceedingly well. There were also male nurses, who I heard were all from Kerala in India. Seven days in ICU, then after two blissful days , in a private suite, I was discharged. I have a wonderful meandering scar and it healed well. I could soon start eating everything again. I was very fortunate to have this diagnosis early and not have to submit to chemo therapy or radiation therapy.

What does it have to do with decolonisation? Well, parting with a bad part of the colon was quite literally my decolonisation. And so we can part with the bad parts of the colonial past [which to be fair ended 108 years ago at the founding of the Union of South Africa terminating the Cape and Natal colonies] and retain that which works and is progressive. As an example, all the staff, doctors and nurses, were South African or from Kerala, India, thus from the Third World, and proud professionals from previous colonies. The machinery, Computerised Tomogram, and some medicines and products were from Germany and other ex colonial powers. What matters, however is that man and machine, 1st and 3rd worlds, worked as an amazing team. ‘’I do not care if the cat is black or white, as long as it catches mice. ‘’ Deng Xao Ping , Chinese president and reformer 1978, when he launched China away from its rigid Mao Zedong ways and opened the doors to trade. Who or what is Pilates? W

hy is that I so often hear something like: ‘my doctor / my physiotherapist / my friend who has been doing Pilates for years said that I must do Pilates, or: ‘as I struggle with my lower back somebody suggested Pilates’? It is because the great thing about Pilates is that it is good for you irrespective of your age, build, gender, or if you struggle with old/new injuries. I had a client as young as 6 in my class as well as somebody of 82 old – there are no limitations with Pilates. By listening to your body and doing only what you can on the day, you are building your core muscles with ease. If you feel a movement is too much for you, there is always an option to ask for a modification to each exercise that suits where you are at on the day so you never over stretch - this is the way to gain incredible results. In doing what you can and being kind to yourself, you will feel absolutely wonderful after each session of stretching, breathing and moving.

Let me start at the beginning. Who or what is Pilates? Joseph J Pilates was born near Dusseldorf, Germany in 1880. He was a frail and sickly child who suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. At an early age he decided to make his body strong and started with basic body movements, utilizing his own body weight to do this. He called it Contrology – the method I firmly believe in and implement in my classes. It is a combination of the principles of concentration, control, breath, center, precision, fluidity and getting in touch with your body through mind and soul. In 1919 Joseph Pilates moved to England where he started as a boxer, circus performer and a self-defense trainer of England detectives. Two years after WW1 broke out, he was caught as an ‘enemy alien’ and was moved with other Germans to a camp in Lancaster and later the Isle of Man. During this time he became a nurse and trained other internees with the physical fitness exercises he developed. In 1918 an influenza epidemic broke out and Joseph Pilates was widely credited when none of the inmates he trained suffered under this epidemic which killed thousands of others! After the war he continued with his fitness training program in Hamburg Germany where he worked with the city’s local police force. In 1926 his work ended with the German Army and he immigrated to the US. On the ship to the US he met his future wife, Clara. Once in New York, they opened a studio which is still in operation to this day. A few months ago photos were posted on social media showing the renovations of the studio. He and his wife were personally active at the studio well into the 1960’s.

He died at the age of 87 after a long, full and healthy life.

How can you benefit from these exercises?

Anneke Theron

It will strengthen your body from the center. As your teacher, I shall always refer to your powerhouse. You will become more and more in tune with this powerhouse, and it shall be become part of your daily life. You will become stronger in your movements during every-day life. New / Old injuries will no longer be a bother to you. You will become more flexible. Your co-ordination and balance will drastically improve. It will release tension of the mind and body. You will learn how to lengthen your body through the spine and experience a visible improvement in posture and body alignment.

of

It will tone all your muscles considerably, because you are increasing blood circulation and with that comes oxygen which will lead to the build of new cells. You will improve your breathing, because I can teach you how to utilize your lung capacity. You will be surprised that you use approximately 30-40 % of your lungs. I can improve that to 70-80 %. And because of this you will definitely find that your quality of sleep drastically improves!

Core Strength

Pilates focuses on the quality of the exercise and not the quantity. You will be surprised at the results from just a small number of repetitions per exercise, being slow and controlled movements. In my classes there are no beginners or advance clients. Everybody’s biorhythms vary from day to day and month to month. You take every exercise and make it your own, depending on how strong you feel on that day and in that moment. “10 sessions and you will feel the difference; 20 sessions and you will see the difference; 30 sessions and you will feel like a new person” – Joseph Pilates In the months to come I shall focus on a certain muscle: the function, possible injuries, possible deterioration that comes with age and how to prevent this. Pilates Greetings from a passionate Pilates teacher. Make a difference to your everyday life. Travel light.

WHAT IS GENETIC SCREENING?

Dr Arien van der Merwe

Safeguard Your Future Health!

G

enetic Screening provides the tools we need to safeguard our health and wellbeing, by implementing lifestyle changes. Our reaction to certain foods, medication, diets and stress, differ quite substantially in comparison to our friends and family. This is likely due to the differences in our genetic makeup and the interaction of our genes with the environment. One size does not fit all! Humans are 99.9% the same (in terms of DNA), and the 0.1% difference is responsible for the variations found among us, making us the unique beings we are. Those differences influence a variety of traits such as appearance, behaviour, disease susceptibility or response to certain foods and medications. With genetic screening tests you can now unlock the secret in your genes and prevent your health risks from manifesting as disease. Your results reflect your genetic predisposition for specific characteristics, which may affect your tendencies to weight gain and risk for various diseases. Whether this genetic predisposition become a reality, often is influenced by environmental and lifestyle factors. By understanding your genetic makeup, you can alter your lifestyle, such as what you eat and drink, what supplements you take, stress management techniques, mental-emotional components, how you live and how active you are. Therefore, knowledge of your genetic profile allows a more efficient approach to your personal health and wellness. The great thing is, you only need to do it once in your life! Your genes will not change, but their potential expression can! Genetic risk is a susceptibility, a potential and not an inevitability!

DNA and the genetic code

DNA (found in the chromosomes in the nucleus of all your cells) carries all the genetic information that forms the blueprint for making a living organism. These instructions are written in a "language" called the genetic code. It comprises only four ‘genetic letters’: A, C, G and T. Each letter/base represents a chemical molecule: adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G) and thymine (T). The four bases forms ‘genetic words and sentences’ that give the body instructions to function. What makes us unique, are variations in the genetic code (or language). These variations (SNP’s) can change the function in the body. SNP stands for single nucleotide polymorphisms. These are the DNA sequence variations that make you different from everyone else you know. Once you have a breakdown of your SNPs, Dr Arien and Anri can interpret the data to tell you which diseases you are likely to get, and how you can manage the risks, by changing your lifestyle and behaviour to prevent these from expressing.

Genetic Screening Tests (DNA testing) We take a simple cheek swab at our practice, and then your DNA is sent to the lab. to be tested. Pop in during our office hours and let us help you collect your DNA! You receive a comprehensive health and wellness report, along with a precision nutrition, exercise and stress management plan, tailored to your genetic needs, enabling you to manage and develop your lifestyle that will be effective in reducing your health risks. In Hermanus, you get a 60 min consultation with Dr Arien van der Merwe (Functional,

Integrative Medical Doctor, Specialist Holistic Counsellor and Stress Management Consultant) to discuss your results and your personalised health plan going forward. The following genetic screening tests are available: WELLNESS, DIET, FITNESS and LONGEVITY. Each measures a specific array of genes to provide knowledge into the secret of your genes. We recommend a combination of all four (4) screening tests, to provide enough knowledge on your health risk profile, for us to assist you in devising your personal health care program to improve your specific health risks. Dr Arien and Anri help you interpret and manage the health risks identified by the screening. Focussing on a holistic approach, incorporating epigenetic principals (incl. holistic health coaching & functional tools) to ensure that your genetic predisposition does not necessarily express as future disease. Increase your energy and vitality, living a healthier, happier life. This is preventative medicine at its best!

CROSSING THE MASCU-LINE

Follow us on:

As per predictions, the fastest growing area of Cosmetic Medicine is male patients. In the US, data shows that since 1997, there has been a 273% increase in the number of procedures performed on men.

And of course, lastly, every man wants a good head of hair. Requests for treatment for male pattern baldness or thinning is increasing exponentially. Fortunately, we have an array of treatments available for this troublesome complaint. Where thinning is the main complaint and is slight to moderate, a foam containing minoxidil can prescribed by the doctor. This foam switches off overactive testosterone receptors on the scalp. These receptors are largely responsible for hair loss, and thus hair can begin to grow more normally. When male pattern hair loss is moderate, a patient can opt for scalp injections with growth factors or the patients own platelets which are spun down and selected and then injected back into the patients scalp in a highly concentrated form. Where hair loss is severe, the physician would most likely recommend a hair transplant with a Medical Hair Loss Clinic. As an aesthetic physician, we are trained and certified in the treatment of both men and women. As such, it is critical that we differentiate between male and female anatomy; and our approach to both patients differs. A male typically has flattened eyebrows. A woman has a lifted eyebrow in the lateral part of the face. A male patient does not have high cheekbones, so when a doctor replaces lost volume, the dermal filler is placed slightly lower down. A male patient has a prominent forehead, we are thus less likely to add volume to the forehead. The jawline of a male patient is squared off. And this is a common place to put filler to increase the squared off look of the jawline. The angle of the jaw in a man is 90 degrees; whereas in a woman it is much softer and more feminine, forming a wider or more obtuse angle as it moves from the ear towards the midline. A man generally has a cleft in the chin. This is because the chin muscle has a right and left side and these are separated in a man, but usually present as a single chin muscle in a woman. One can use dermal filler to either create a cleft, or to enhance a cleft chin. A man also typically has a nose which is the same width at it’s end, as the mouth. A woman has a much narrower nose and one can enhance a woman’s nose to make it more delicate or petite. It is not often that a man would request lip filler and it is considered masculine to have a narrowed upper lip.

There are various reasons why men have started spending more time and money on their faces Traditionally, men’s ageing is more gradual and more accepted than a women’s is. Their wrinkles are referred to as character lines, while their grey hair makes them look more distinguished. But what happens when they reach an age when those lines deepen, when they develop droopy eyelids, their hair thins or that strong rugged jawline softens?

So, we can appreciate that a male facial anatomy differs considerably to a female and the aesthetic practitioner would have to take this into consideration. But equally we can understand that male aesthetics is a fast-growing field, for various reasons and ensure that we are well versed with Male Aesthetic Treatments so as to be able to meet patients demands. Dr Michelle, Lindi and Refine Clinic would like to wish all our male clients a happy and healthy “Movember”. And to Splash, congratulations on the 100th issue.

At this stage of the aging process, men are more cosmetically conscious, so we should not underestimate the impact it has on their state of mind and ambition. We can say that cosmetic procedures are viewed by men as a way of self-enhancement, the same way as eating well, going to the gym or wearing nice clothes. Men see cosmetic treatments as keeping themselves looking and feeling healthy and potent. Highly driven male corporates, hoping to get ahead of the game in this competitive job market also opt for cosmetic procedures. They enjoy the feeling of having control over their appearance, as well as their careers. As we are expected to work much longer than in years gone by, many men in their 50’s and 60’s find themselves competing for a seat at the boardroom table with men in their 30’s and 40’s. It is economically essential that these men can look good. There is a lot that a man can do from an aesthetics point of view without compromising on his masculinity. What men want: ❖ Men are more comfortable trying procedures that won’t require too much time, aren’t invasive and have minimal side effects. Here are the most popular male cosmetic treatments: ◗ Botulinum toxin injections between the eyes, on frown lines, on smile lines, and on crows’ feet ◗ Chemical peels to reduce pore size, treat oily and rough skin and give a healthy looking complexion ◗ Fractionated Laser for the Ultimate Anti-aging treatment ◗ Dermal fillers to add volume to the chin and cheeks ◗ Dermal fillers in the jaw for increased jawline definition and to reduce their double chin ◗ IPL laser to reduce facial redness and veins on the face ◗ Facial thread lifting

An Inspiring and Fresh Approach to Real Estate Marketing Pam Snyman

REDZetc is an innovative real estate brand that strives to bring a new and refreshing approach to the real estate marketing environment. Pam Snyman, the founder and managing director, has served the real estate industry since 1986 and has put in a remarkable effort to professionalize the industry on different levels. In 2013 Pam decided after 27 years in the corporate real estate world, that there were certain aspects of the industry that needed serious reinventing. • Estate agents work for their agencies…what we need is an estate agency that works for their estate agents. • Estate agencies are run out of offices that operate in accordance with the agency needs (sales targets and high profits), by agency managers and in terms of the agency’s office rules…what we need is a place where entrepreneurial agents can function in accordance with their clients’ needs, in terms of a servient leadership culture based on sound principles and values. • Estate agents are trained to take sole mandates at any cost (even, and mostly, on overpriced properties) in order to control the market and minimize competition…what we need are agents understanding and acting in the interest of the client/mandator at all times, i.e. client- orientation vs self-orientation. • Estate agents are allowed by many of the agencies to operate without being legally qualified (with valid current Fidelity Fund Certificates) to do so…what we need is an estate agency that is run strictly in accordance with all legal compliance measures to ensure the interests of its clients. • When entrepreneurial estate agents leave their present employment in order to start their own small business, they are frowned upon and viewed as competition. They are then hounded by their former companies and held to unreasonable restraints of trade thus preventing them from following the route of new venture creation. At REDZetc we have created an ‘associates’ model where we encourage the creation of SMME’s by mentoring individuals to set up their own businesses and assisting them with the necessary back-up and coaching until they are fully qualified to be a principal of their own firm whilst sharing intellectual property and expertise with them. If the intention is to change the industry by means of changing its soul into a more caring profession, you have to go national and since its inception in 2013, some 130 agents and 12 brand new entrepreneurial associate companies have joined hands all over South Africa. REDZetc is growing steadily but surely, as all agents and new ventures join of their own accord and are not recruited. They are all previously known by Pam or have been referred to REDZetc by people that believe in the SPLASH 12

brand and its culture of absolute compliance, integrity, transparency, expertise and passion. Pam notes: “We focus on excellent service by experienced and educated estate agents. Our model provides that all our agents throughout the country can offer your property collectively to all their potential buyers at once. Your Hermanus listing agent will do the rest”. In August, Women’s Month this year, Pam was honoured by being named as an honouree by the ‘7% Tribe’ at a gala dinner in Steyn City, Johannesburg represented by very select group of South African business leaders. According to the BWASA (Business Women’s Association of SA) only 22% of board directors are women, but only 7% are executive directors. According to the spokesperson of the group: “The 7% Tribe is a movement that aims to shatter the glass ceiling and, in so doing, create a path for future generations to follow. South Africa has given rise to so many hugely inspirational women and, by tapping into their insights, skills and talents, we can help uplift a new generation of successful South African women”. Pam’s supporting statement at the event read as follows: “To me business is much more than mere business. Being an entrepreneur is much more than starting a new business. We as women require a special ability to sense and act on opportunity, combining creative thinking with a unique brand of business sense to bring about something new and exciting to benefit our country. We need vision

and passion with an imperative to drive social change, and it is that potential, with its lasting, transformational benefit to society that sets true entrepreneurs apart. That is what REDZetc wants to be in order to create meaningful jobs and futures and always and ultimately improve the skills level of our people. Because women can”. The Institute of Estate Agents (IEASA), Western Cape also honoured Pam at their 2018 Annual General Meeting for her valued contribution to the property sector by bestowing her with the Geoffrey Seeff Award. She also received the same award way back in 1994!

Please just call Pam on 082 8000 867 or any of the local REDZetc estate agents or the Head Office on 021 881 3311 if you want to participate in our entrepreneurial approach by affording us the opportunity to offer your property to our potential buyers.

th Birthday Celebrations

70 Years ago, on the 12th October, the first Morris Minor, designed by Sir Alec Issigonis, was produced at Cowley, Oxfordshire, England. 1.6 million Morris Minors were built until production ceased in 1972, and it was the first British car to sell over one million units and is considered a classic example of automotive design. One of Sir Alec’s famous sayings was “The public don’t know what they want, it is my job to tell them!” And told them, he did. It is the dream of every Morris car enthusiast to own the whole series, which consist of the MM (1948 to 1953), the Series II (1952 to 1956) and finally the 1000 series (1956 to 1972). Initially available as a two-door saloon and tourer (convertible), the range was expanded to include a four-door saloon in 1950, a wood-framed estate (the Traveller) from October 1953 and panel van and pick-up truck variants from May 1953. Not many achieve this, because some of these old beauties are hard to come by, especially in South Africa. If you are the proud owner of a panel van or pick-up truck, you are a lucky man indeed. This year, Morris clubs worldwide, have been celebrating this memorable occasion ……. and of course, the Morris Minor Owners Club of the Western Cape just had to do the same. We like a challenge, and we pride ourselves with having willing members and a formidable team to organize an event of this magnitude. One of our club members, Paul Hoffman, came up with the idea to try and get 70 Morries together. He contacted Tatum Sieni, the Brand and Marketing Manager at Century City Property Owners' Association, and we were able to secure a big enough, safe parking spot at Century City, where passers-by could see us and drop by for a look and a photo opportunity. The Chairman, Frikkie Muller and Paul Hoffman were in charge of contacting members and nonmembers - anyone with a Morris, on the road, off the road, projectsin-progress, wrecks - to bring them to the venue. Some had to be towed, some were brought by trailers, but 70 Morries they wanted, and 70 Morries they were going to get. In the end, they were SPLASH 14

Morris Minor Club Western Cape

able to get 66 cars parked, and another 23, which were not able to participate, due to different circumstances. Paul made a deal with some of the Hermanus Morris owners – if they supported us, we’ll support them at the Whales and Wheels Festival. The Morries were parked according to their model year, starting with the oldest, two low-lights from 1948 and 1949, and ending with a beautiful 1969 model. Every participant received a special celebratory certificate, plus a specially made rosette to fix onto the cars. Union Jack flags were billowing in the breeze and together with the big Morris logo, nobody who drove past, would doubt that the magnificent Morris Minor was well represented. As the Western Cape will be hosting the 2020 National Rally, we realized that this event would be the perfect opportunity to get the necessary exposure to the media and public. The chairman was interviewed by a television news channel, featured on Cape Talk and an article was published in a local newsletter. We also saw this as a fundraising opportunity and we organized a boerie-roll stand and were able to sell out all the rolls and made a neat profit. There was plenty of Morris regalia for sale, and spare parts galore – something every Morris owner is constantly looking for. The pièce de résistance of the day was a Marina engine on a stand, built by two of our club members, Willie Bouwer and Malcolm Jones. The engine was started then and there, and it caused quite a lot of interest amongst the crowd. Lately, many Morris owners are replacing the original Morris engine with the more powerful Marina engine, to be able to get over Sir Lowry’s pass more comfortably – after all, we did promise to visit Hermanus! Once bitten by the Morris Bug, it doesn’t let you go. We’ll keep on restoring them until the end of time. If you’ve never owned a Morris, you won’t understand.

By Gerda Muller Secretary Morris Minor Owner’s Club: Western Cape.

Hoe wen jy ’n finaal? Dawie Snyman

H

Wanneer ek hierdie goed so in die media sien, sien ek net rooiligte.

SPLASH 16

Visit the website www.theglobalchalenge.co.za and follow the pledge links to make you pledge big or small and every bit helps the professionals as they chase their goal to raise R 300 000 for charity this year. Captain of Team North Nora Angehrn is passionate about trying to make a difference in the world and is a huge fan of South Africa visiting numerus times on and off the golf course. Lavish in her praise of Hermanus Golf course she said “Thank you to everyone that has made a pledge to date, no matter how big or small. Your support makes every shot we make on the fairways of Hermanus during The Global Challenge so very worth while. Please take up our challenge and make your pledge at #BangTheDrum.”

Its game on It’s without a doubt game on as the 2 team captains have laid down the challenge to see who will be lifting the Ralph Walton Trophy on Sunday 11th November after the 2 day challenge on the magnificent Hermanus Golf Club here in South Africa. Hosted in the magnificent seaside town of Hermanus in South Africa, "The Global Challenge" is an annual golf tournament for professional women golfers contested by teams representing the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

The driving force behind its creation was based on the need for a women's teams event that included professionals from the entire globe. With a further vision of positioning this event to showcase inclusivity in the world of women's sport and on the golf course the decision was made after the inaugural event to include a world class sports women with a physical disability into each team. The inaugural challenge was held in 2017 on the Hermanus Golf Course in South Africa with first time winners the team from the Northern Hemisphere captained by Nora Angehrn from Switzerland. The Global Challenge is contested over 2 days with the same match play scoring system as the Ryder and Solheim Cups. 2 points for a win and one point for a half. Additionally it was decided to allocate a bonus point for the team that has produced the most birdies for the day forcing play to continue to the 18th in each match. Whilst The Global Challenge is a fiercely competitive event these two days sees rivalry amongst the players being put aside by team mates who pull together for the honour of being able to lift the magnificent Ralph Walton Trophy together with a generosity of spirit whereby they are trying to raise money for charity alongside representing their hemisphere with pride. Captain for the Northern Hemisphere for the 2nd year running Nora Angehrn (Switzerland) and South African professional Morgana Robbertze captain of the Southern Hemisphere have made no secret of the fact that they, together with their team mates will be going all out to win. However whilst there is fierce competition on the golf course between these magnificent golfers what makes The Global Challenge so special for the players is that they have the opportunity to raise funds for charity. As so nicely described my Morgana ..."What a privilege to be able to alongside representing our Hemisphere try and raise money for those who may be in need of that small bit of help that could change their lives forever by just doing what we love doing - PLAYING GOLF !
