e were invited to one of the best kept secrets on the R43 to Hermanus. After a short, but lovely, drive from Hermanus, we turned left into the vineyards of Rivendell. There we were welcomed by manager Christopher, and Cedric, our waiter for the evening. Chef Thomas Sinn, who took over the reins at Rivendell in July, was hard at work in the kitchen.

Blanc and decided to enjoy the lovely white wine with our food. The food tasting started with an amuse bouche of Asian style beef spoon. It is was well matured and melted in your mouth. I could eat a whole plate of that dish, but there was more to come. The second course was seared salmon trout. It is home-cured fresh Botriver salmon trout served with Japanese mayo and an egg salad. Turmeric is added to give the salad a twist. For the third course we had mussel and Riesling soup. Chef Sinn uses only the freshest West Coast Mussels. The mussels are lovingly garnished with a thin slice of roasted beetroot, thinly sliced puff pastry The fourth course was hake on parmesan Italian style risotto. The hake best hake I have had in a very long time. After our palate cleanser of homemade guava sorbet, we had our last course before dessert. served on a bed of mushrooms with grilled duck liver pate, red wine and

again. There is only on three letter word to describe this dish, “Wow!” Lastly, chef Sinn spoiled us with a medley of their desserts served with fresh fruit. My favourite was the chocolate fondant. Crispy on the outside and sticky on the inside. We also had the passion fruit sorbet, two kinds of chocolate mousse, homemade coffee ice cream and crème brûlée. Apart from the deliciously beautiful food, you will be stunned by the beauty of the restaurant and surroundings. Each dish was perfectly presented and once again showcased the culinary talents of the Overberg. So next time you’re travelling on the R43, don’t just drive past Rivendell, pop in and be amazed. Many thanks to Chef Thomas Sinn, Christopher, Cedric and the whole Rivendell team.

Walker Bay Whale Watching Every winter, over a hundred thousand visitors flock to our shores to experience what has been described as the best land-based whale watching in the world. The main attraction, the Southern Right whale, is a gentle giant who seasonally occupies the bay to mate and calve. The Walker Bay Whale Sanctuary was declared in 2001 and restricts motorised boat access in the bay between July and December. The sanctuary was developed to give shorebased whale watchers an unobstructed view of the whales, but lacks researchbased scientific understanding of how the whales use the area. To better understand, assess and monitor the abundance and movements of cetacean populations within the bay, the South African Shark Conservancy (SASC) established the Marine Ecology Research Programme (MERP) along with their commercial partners, Southern Right Charters. The MERP pairs GPS, individual photo identification and behavioural data to track the movement and activities of cetaceans in Walker Bay. With this research, SASC strives to assess the effectiveness of the whale sanctuary. The SASC is a marine conservation organisation that encourages the sustainable use of living marine resources through research, education and outreach. SASC currently runs 13 research projects in Walker Bay. As an NGO, SASC does not receive funding from government or academic sources and lacks research funds to take their current research to a higher level, which ideally would include an acoustic array of receivers in Walker Bay. If you are interested in supporting SASC or would just like to learn more about their research, visit the SASC facility in the Old Harbour for a free tour of the research laboratory. RE-INVENT…

D

Wit vet lyk glo beter in bruin. My brein natuurlik. Jy is in beheer. As always I’m considerate of the English readers – to summarise the above, in order to re-invent yourself you simply need to … change your mind. First you think it, then you live it, then you become it.

But seriously, are you aware of the fact that you are currently slap-bang in the middle of the Mecca of Make-overs? Hermanus must have more beauty salons, hairdressers and dentists than any other town in the entire world. We also happen to have more doctors, vets, restaurants, art galleries and speciality shops than Sandton City. But that’s a story for another day. o Hermanus to have my lashes done by Anel, my hair cut by Amri and my face revamped by Lindi. I kid you not. No one in Jozi is a patch on these three women who help me look my best. So as I sit here (in beautiful sunny Jo’burg) my brows need reshaping, the double chin

is emerging not to mention my upper lip. Okay let me not go there. But you know what I’m talking about, ladies. Luckily the plane ticket has already been booked and as you read this I will have been restored to my former Hermanus glory. Until then I’ll just have to veil myself. Luckily in Johannesburg nobody really cares what you look like. Nobody really cares I have a couple of re-invention ideas (mostly for myself) but you’re welcome to add your own. 1) CHANGE your hairstyle. Change your hair colour. If you’re too afraid of this, get yourself a wig. I’m dead serious. We all know the fairest Cape doesn’t always have the fairest weather. But a good wig can withstand the worst weather conditions. Strange that we don’t have a good wig supplier in Hermanus? I sense a business opportunity. Which bring me to my next point . . . 2) Do something DARING. Something you’ve always wanted to but simply didn’t have the guts. I bought a shop on a whim. Why? Because I loved the place. I had no idea how to run a business; I’d never dealt with retail or customers before. My math was and still is atrocious, however 4 years later I’m still here and still loving it. And over the past four years Amulet has also been re-inventing itself. Pop in anytime and discover our latest treasures. Prepare yourself to be surprised. Prepare to be amused. 3) TRAVEL. Not only will you enrich your soul, you will also realise just how magical our hometown is. I pick up all kinds of wonderful and quirky items and ideas on all my travels and bring them home. And if you’re lucky I may even put them up for sale in Amulet. 4) LEARN a new skill, or a new language. Learn something, even if it’s just good manners. Educate yourself. When I was a permanent inhabitant of the City of Gold, I never had time for extramural activities. I’m proud to say that since I’ve moved to Hermanus I have learnt to crochet, I’ve tried my hand at ceramics and mosaics. I can even create a to make awesome leather items and the now wellknown carrot cake. And you know what? We’re actually much busier now than when we were living permanently in yourself . . . 5) If it doesn’t make you happy, stop doing it! Six years ago, we admitted we don’t like living in the city anymore, so we moved here. A while later I decided my job is frustrating me, so I gave it up, bought a shop and now I have more work than I can handle. Be fearless! Be good to yourself. No one ever said you have to hate your job/life/house to deserve being alive. Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life. 6) REWARD yourself. This summer I want to redo my entire house. Okay, maybe too ambitious. I’ll start with a room, but you buy that artwork, pot or unique piece you’ve been eyeing for months now. You deserve it. 7) I’m very tempted to change the way I dress. Maybe it’s time for me to let go of my ‘gypsy on steroids’ look . . . mmm. Maybe I’m not quite ready for that one yet. Maybe I should leave the re-inventing to you, dear reader. Whatever you decide on, enjoy! Be bold, brave and (what the hell) be a little naughty… xx

THE FYNBOS TRAIL

Winding its way through the mountains between Stanford and Gansbaai, the 26km Fynbos Trail is gaining increased popularity. Best enjoyed as a fully catered slackpacking trail with two overnight stops at Fynbos Retreat and Witkrans farm, expert guides will educate and entertain you on the way. With more than 800 species of fynbos identified in the area, there is always something in bloom. This trail is founded by Sean and Michelle Privett and you will receive a gift of a book co-authored by Sean: ‘Field Guide to the Flora of Grootbos Nature Reserve and the Walker Bay Region’ which is given to you as part of the fully catered hiking package. This book is an absolute must for any Western Cape hiker with even a small interest in the delightful floral kingdom. These floral delights also attract incredible bird life most notably the Cape sugarbird and other sunbirds but of course the raptors that fly overhead will ensure you also keep an eye on the skies. The call of the baboons can be heard in the mountains and they often keep their steady gaze on the hikers. Leopard spoor have been identified but these shy, elusive animals are usually only seen by camera traps. The very knowledgeable guides will share many fascinating stories with you on this incredibly diverse ecosystem.

More information: www.fynbostrail.co.za info@fynbostrail.co.za Ph: 0824645115 Facebook: fynbostrail Twitter: @TheFynbosTrail

If you have an extra day, there is an optional add on to walk a coastal section in the De Kelders area. During whale season this is particularly spectacular. This trail has heart too - from its start at Steynsbos you will meet the team of Growing the Future’s agricultural training at Grootbos and along the way stop in at Flower Valley Conservation Trust and even plant an indigenous tree in the Stinkhoutsbos reforestation project. The tree can be named by you and you will be sent the GPS corodinates of your tree and listed on the trail website as a supporter. On hot days you can enjoy a swim in the dams and maybe even a shower under the waterfall at Witvoetskloof. With only a day pack, photographers can play with their cameras as many photographic opportunities present themselves. This trail is rated moderate so is also suited to families and a wonderful way to introduce children to the delights of hiking. All meals are catered for and with fresh locally produced food and wine to enjoy and awesome people to meet, this trail will leave you feeling renewed and smiling broadly, knowing you also have a tree in your name growing on the mountain. See you on the trail!

BODY

Gummy smile is a phenomenon which exists when some people smile. Their upper lip elevates too far above their upper teeth, exposing gums and producing an unattractive smile. Before For most people, smiling is an expression of happiness. Individuals, whose gums stand out more than their smile does, often feel self-conscious. Those with ‘gummy smiles’ try After to control and minimise their smile or prefer not to smile at all. This may have a detrimental effect on their professional, social and personal relationships. There are several causes, one of which is a hyperactive muscle which elevates the upper lip. Occasionally the ‘gummy smile’ is also aggravated by a thin upper lip, which further contributes to the problem by exposing the gum even more. Fortunately, the ‘gummy smile’ can be simply and effectively corrected by Botulinum toxin (Botox) to reduce the activity of the muscle that elevates your smile. Hermanus 082 4321933 Somerset West 0716071251 WHAT IS CRYOLIPOLYSIS? Non invasive procedure that effectively removes fat from targeted areas by ‘freezing’ to below -4 deg C eg abdomen , love handles, saddle bags and bra bulges. Cryolipolysis is not painful, neither is there a recovery period . Typically 2 to 4 weeks after the procedure you notice a difference. Your lymphatic drainage system continues to flush the dead fat cells away for several weeks. The results are comparable to liposuction as the cells are permanently destroyed. Client tummy frozen SPECIAL 1 AREA FROZEN R1000. ULTRASONIC CAVITATIONS - This procedure is excellent for cellulite reduction. The ultrasonic head emits strong sound waves into the targeted area that break down pockets of fat cells. (30 minutes) R500 RADIO FREQUENCY - of 38 degrees C – 42 degrees C under the skin. This is capable of stimulating the existing dermic collagen and producing a contraction of the epidermis, which in turn produces a tighter looking skin. (30 minutes) R500

WRITTEN BY DR MICHELLE EMETT

When a patient asks what your feelings are on vitamins and mineral supplements, one groans inwardly as it’s such a mine field of information and really today; one has to almost specialise in the science of supplements to give the correct and informed advice. Fortunately, years in pharmaceuticals gives one an advantage in answering the question.

N

utraceutical Medicine is rapidly becoming the future of medical pharmacology in the USA and around the world. For centuries, various ethnic tribes have described the healing properties from different herbs and supplements and finally the western world is waking up to the reality that doctors don’t have all the answers. The RDA, recommended dietary allowance; is the estimated amount of a nutrient (or calories) per day considered necessary for the maintenance of good health. BUT importantly, the RDA does not refer to the amount of vitamins and minerals needed to treat diseased states and thus doses for treatment vary considerably. For many years pharmaceutical companies, who sponsor most trials in medicine, have had no interest to research the benefits of vitamins as they cannot patent vitamins, which occur freely in nature. It remains difficult to adequately describe the many different chemical forms of the vitamin molecule which the body can absorb and eliminate. It’s a chemistry 101 lecture in itself. But in simple terms….vitamins are either fat soluble(Vitamins A,D,E,K) and therefore “storable” in the liver or water soluble(B’s and C) and the body eliminates what is not needed at that moment. Water soluble vitamins are thus non-toxic; but fat soluble vitamins can be toxic in excess amounts. The chemical structure of a vitamin determines how much the body can absorb. A good example of this is Vitamin D. Also known as the “Sunshine Vitamin”; vitamin D is activated in the body by sunlight. Studies have shown that in countries that are overzealous in sunscreen and office work(such as Australia), people are now being shown to be deficient in Vitamin D which will have a negative effect on the brain, sleep, mood, bones, joins and skin. So the next time you reach for that vitamin D bottle, make sure it’s D3! Like Vitamin D should be in the D3 chemical structure, so too Vitamin E has 8 chemical structures in nature; Tocopherols and Tocotrienols. α –tocopherol in excess, is bad and inhibits the absorption of the good Vitamin E molecules. γ-tocopheral (gamma) is the most important Vitamin E in skin care. It is a potent anti-oxidant which destroys free radicals associated with inflammation and aging in all organs including the skin. Ensure all 8 forms of Vitamin E are present in an anti-aging supplement to protect brain, heart and skin. Another interesting molecule which has received much attention recently is Omega Oils. The Omega’s are important for brain, immune function, joints, skin hydration and hair and skin volume. But not all Omega sources are equal. We all need Omega 3, the best source of which is Krill Oil. These are tiny shrimp like crustaceans that are enjoyed by whales all over the world. Omega 6 however, is needed more by the aged for brain function and older peri-menopausal women who need omega 6 for hormone production. Thus one should take their supplements with specific disease entities in mind. While men can get away with Omega 3; women should opt for both Omega 3 and 6.

Pro-biotics…saviour of gut and mental health. . We speak of a “gut instinct” or my “stomach was in knots with anxiety”; it felt as if I’d been “punched in the belly”. They’ve always said “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach”, but did you know that in fact, the way to a healthy brain, IS thru the gut? The seat of emotion may well be in the stomach?! As science progresses we’ve learnt that the brain and gut express the same neuro-hormones, such as serotonin(our “happiness hormone”). The ancient art of Yoga speaks of the “Solar Plexus” chakra, honouring the life force and medically we know that the solar plexus lies behind the stomach and is the highway of the peripheral nervous system. After illness, anti-biotics, stress or diseased states which lower our immune system; the gut is deficient of our naturally occurring pro-biotics or “good bacteria”. When this happens, we are prone to developing infections. This is due to opportunistic bacteria or fungi colonising the gut. Itinterferes with normal barrier functioning. And when we talk barrier, we are referring to skin, vagina and gut. We used to tell patients to eat yoghurt when they took anti- biotics, but in order to lengthen shelf life, most of our yoghurts today are deficient in probiotics due to irradiation. In conclusion, should you suffer from any of the above illnesses or compromised immune states; pro-biotics are essential. Other anti-aging and skin specific supplements include Vitamin A for skin regeneration and vitamin C, a potent antioxidant. Zinc, collagen, biotin and silicon strengthen hair, skin and nails. They stimulate collagen, elastin and keratin formation. These “dermaceuticals” have proven scientific results, showing both their anti-oxidant and age reversing effects when taken at the correct dose and in the correct form. So in simple terms; since most of our foods are not organic and our diets are deficient in Vitamins and Minerals, I strongly advise a good basic multivitamin to balance intake of nutrients. In addition, if a patient suffers from a particular illness or is trying to prevent aging or other inherited pathologies; one should add certain vitamins specifically designed to target that particular disease entity. Be discerning in your brand of supplements, ensuring it is of a high quality. Rather buy an expensive supplement and take it every second day than to waste your money on the “101 vitamins” in a cheap bottle!

PERMANENT MAKEUP EYEBROWS Unfortunately not all of us are blessed with gorgeous full brows that compliment our face shape and accentuate our eyes. Pencils and powders are great for remedying sparse growth and enhancing poorly shaped, asymmetrical brows, but if you’re looking for something longer lasting, permanent makeup is the answer.

www.renewslimming.co.za Please contact: Karin / Marike Tel: 028 312 3352 • info@renewslimming.co.za Caledon - 23 Church Street • Jane Swart Tel: (028) 212 1381

Reshape

This can be done by creating the effect of ultra-fine, delicate hair strokes that blend seamlessly with your natural brow hair. This will recreate a flattering brow shape with a natural, non-artificial look, by using hues and tones to suit your skin and hair colours. It will ultimately enhance your face and bone structure and result in a youthful appearance, emphasising your eyes.

By working with the “landscape” of your brow – be it too short, thin patchy or sparse – reviving the basic shape. And if your brows are completely gone an entirely new brow can be created for you. CAN BAD TATTOOED BROWS BE FIXED? In most cases they can. Badly shaped brows and unnatural colours can be reworked and brought back to a flattering look with the use of corrective pigments. Your expectations must be realistic, as results are not always comparable to new permanent makeup brows. Leanne Steinmann, Internationally trained Permanent Makeup Technician

MEDICALLY ASSISTED WEIGHT

LOSS PROGRAMME

How does this work? ► What is Reshape? Reshape is a weight loss program that primarily focus on fat loss. By using Lipolytic in combination with a very low calorie diet you will lose up to 30% more abnormally stored fat as opposed to a reduced calorie diet on its own. ► How does it work? The combination of the medication and the specially formulated eating plan will trigger the body to tap into your abnormal fat stores as a source of energy. By tapping into your fat reserves you will release a substance called leptin that will trigger your satiety centre in your brain and give you a feeling of “fullness”. Lipolytic also increases your serotonin (happy hormone) levels thus increasing your mood. The end result being: • Weight Loss (fat loss) • increased energy levels • Decreased hunger • Increased in mood ► Can anyone do the program? Because it’s a natural product it is safe and has no side effects. However you have to see your doctor to rule out any medical cause for your weight problem. ► Matric farewell special - Environ deep cleanse - R150 including free eyelash tint and eyebrow shape ► Stockist and treatment of

Hosting a “Cuppa for CANSA” Just looking at these perfect macaroons, left me feeling terribly intimidated. Having never before tried my hand at making these “ballet dancers”, I felt the time had indeed come to step away from producing stews to creating something more delicate and feminine. Macaroons - I am sure you will agree - remind me of going shopping with my grandmother; they are the sort you always used to see displayed in bakers' shop windows alongside the madeleines. After having successfully baked a dozen, I am pleased to

report that whilst you’d think macaroons were designed to keep the children happy, it was the adults in my family who seem to find them particularly irresistible. Want to try one? Why don't you join us at our “Host a Cuppa for Cansa” tea party and come and sample our macaroons. You are hereby invited to join the Goozi “Host a Cuppa for CANSA” tea party. Come and enjoy an informative talk about “healthy living”, have a cappuccino and macaroon, enter our lucky draw and stand a chance to WIN a gorgeous Le Creuset hamper!

Goozi “Host a Cuppa for CANSA” will be held on Friday 31 Oct 2014 at 10 am at Goozi Kitchenshop. If you would like to participate, please contact Goozi, and talk to Christa to book your seat. All funds raised during the morning in our “ Goozi lucky draw” will be donated to CANSA Hermanus. In addition, remember for every pale rose cappuccino mug sold, Le Creuset will donate 30% back to CANSA.

• Set aside for 10 minutes until a skin forms on the macaroons. Place in the oven and bake for 10-15 minutes. • Once baked, allow to cool on the tray before removing. For the filling: • Cream the softened butter, icing sugar and vanilla essence together until smooth. • Once the macaroons have cooled, sandwich them together carefully with butter cream and serve on Le Creuset Tea Plates. • Cook’s note: The filling for the macaroons can be varied according to taste.

Verseker Indies of dalk Turks.

Soos die Engelse sal sê, “bear with me”. Die beste beskrywing vir die styl is “ a well travelled home”.

Boheemse kleure is ʼn noodsaaklikheid. ʼn Huis vol panache.

Gaan maak ʼn draai op my Pinterest en kyk na my Boheemse “moadboard” vir meer idees. Geniet die lente! Elmarie de Waal vir Designee Décor 29 Hoofweg,Onrusrivier

PaRaGlIdInG I am often asked, “Are you Hermanus Paragliding?” to which I answer; “No, we are Paragliding Hermanus, (PH) which is about individuals paragliding in Hermanus and not a business trying to sell or govern the Hermanus paragliding”. PH consists of myself and Tom Knowler who both run private businesses which are totally unrelated to the sport. We are simply the local “para-junkies”. The idea behind PH is that we provide important site and weather information through a website for visiting pilots who come from all over the world to fly on our magical mountain. We can also link potential students and tandem passengers to some of the best paragliding schools and operators in the country thus making the sport available to the average “ground dweller”” too. When I first arrived back home from the UK with my own kit, there was very little in the form of immediate information about the launch site and no other resident pilots to share local knowledge. From a safety aspect it is always good to have this information to hand when flying any site for the first time and then in Summer when you look up and see the sky punctuated by paragliders it is worth knowing that 70% of them are visiting from overseas and quite often are looking for places to stay and eat. This is when I had the idea to create PH as an online portal through which pilots can find all that they need in order to enjoy a day or two paragliding in Hermanus. There is a large information and rules sign on take-off which includes the www.paraglidinghermanus.co.za address for visitors to see. If you would like to experience paragliding or perhaps advertise your business on the site please feel free to make contact. Or facebook us on Paragliding Hermanus
