ctober is my birthday month. So who cares, you wonder. I agree. Once a woman reaches her forties/fifties (let’s just keep it vague) she doesn’t really advertise the fact that she is a year older. To this day, my mother (one of the most honest people I know) blatantly lies about her age. The last time I threw a birthday party for myself was when I turned 30. Judging by the Queen Mother-of-a-hangover the following day and the state of the house and garden I suspect a great time was had by all (excluding the neighbours). On the other hand, I recall my fortieth as being quite a depressing affair and since then I have somehow just never got round to throwing myself a huge (or even intimate) birthday bash. Maybe I’ll do something spectacular when I turn sixty. (If I remember, that is) Seriously, believe it or not, I have been living at such a hectic pace for most of my life that I have often completely forgotten my birthday. No chance of that happening this year. I have been receiving emails and messages from total strangers. And I’m not talking about Facebook. I’m even getting phone calls. Many, adamant, not-taking-no-for-an answer phone calls. No, I’m not being stalked, but somewhere on some big central computer I have been earmarked as a target. (oooh, sounds exciting and dangerous like a bad movie plot, doesn’t it?) Rest assured, it’s quite safe to hang around me, your life is not in danger. Me, on the other hand… I’m going to burst an artery the next time some ‘snotkop’ phones me telling me how to invest my money. If I want financial advice I’ll make an appointment with someone I know and trust thank you very much. Seems I have now reached that particular age where I have become an unsuspecting old tannie with some ‘savings’. (Many moons ago as a very young actress I took out some policies which were supposed to make me live comfortably – suffice to say, the returns have not been as rewarding as promised - but that is a subject for another day. After thirty years I get R800 a month – seriously!? ) I suspect I will not be retiring early after all. Luckily five years ago, I bought myself the best birthday present ever – Amulet. And if you’ve been reading my ramblings in the Splash you’ll know that my best birthday present ever has recently expanded. And what the faceless advisors on the phone don’t realise is that my Happy place has also kind of become my retirement fund. Actually it’s more than that. It’s become a way of life. Every morning when I walk in there and I switch on the lights, the music and then the coffee machine I look around me in wonder: Is this beautiful place really mine? I am a most fortunate woman. And yes I probably will have to work for the rest of my life. And that is okay. More than okay. So please don’t call me about a retirement plan. Besides the fact that I don’t know you meneer, no woman likes to be reminded that she’s getting older. (Who trains these fake-friendly pushy telesales people? Have they no idea how a vain woman’s mind works?) So I decide to do my thing on-line. I can transact and buy and sell as I please when I please – hell I can even have a bath while I’m investing my hard-earned savings. Rather not. Seeing as I’m notoriously clumsy, I end up doing it on the couch in front of the TV. I’m sure some financial advisors also multi-task in the same way? However I can’t even log on. Seems that I keep entering the incorrect username and password. Incorrect password? My password is pretty much the same for everything – life is just way too short to remember all the hundreds of codes and numbers required to survive in the modern world. And how on earth can the user name be wrong? I am the user. I know my name. It’s not as if I’ve changed it recently or anything. I didn’t even take my husband’s surname when we got married. I am Helene Truter… Hang on… Is this the one website where I decided to come up with a ridiculous username because for some

unknown reason they/the computer/ the website wouldn’t accept my real name but it was quite happy to go for Mickey Mouse? No, that was my jetsetters login name. Not that I’m a jetsetter anymore… I try a few other options. Damn I have now managed to block any access to the website. All I wanted was to find out what my balance is. Oh no… They’re advising me to use their share call number… and we all know that I will be spending the better half of my day listening to bad music and a voice telling me about all the latest products that the company offers… and then he will share the good news; that I can access all these amazing services on-line. Yeah right, mister. Only if I can remember my username! I might as well concentrate on the stuff money can’t buy. Thank you to all our faithful customers who have supported us and everyone who has popped in to check out the new extension. Thank you to the locals who bring their friends and relatives to visit the little pink shop in Broad Street. (Well, not so little anymore, but still very pink) Thank you to the faithful who brag to everyone about Percy’s awesome carrot cake… Thank you to the organisers of the Whale Festival who bring thousands to our shores, (and sometimes into our shops) thanks to my hubby who humours every new whim of his restless wife… Mmmm…. Now that the extension has been completed, I’m thinking we should do fun mini workshops every month…Percy, where are you going darling… Did you hear what I said… Percy?! (I wonder if he has changed his username?) BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONES Over the last few decades, women have questioned the safety and efficacy of Hormone Replacement (HRT) for prevention of menopausal symptoms. The huge Women’s Health Initiative Study, cast a dark cloud over hormone replacement; implicating synthetic hormones as a contributor to strokes, heart attacks, clots and breast cancer. This study has subsequently been challenged and final recommendations from the FDA include use of hormone replacement in the lowest possible doses for shortest time to treat menopausal symptoms. Hormone replacement should be used for five years in the pre- menopausal period to protect bone density and help symptoms of menopause. But what if an even safer method was available? The delivery method for hormones is extremely important. Oestrogen take by mouth must first be processed by the liver. This is where complications such as excessive clotting, heart attacks and strokes can arise. If oestrogen is taken by a cream or patch this liver cycle is not needed and hence, the risk of side effects is less. Bio identical Hormones (BHRT), provide hormone replacement in an identical structure to what the body makes, which has several advantages over synthesised hormones. The BHRT is made from soy and yam extract. Progesterone is finely ground for better absorption in creams. DHEA and testosterone come from animal gland extracts. The bio identical hormones are often called “Natural Hormone Therapy” as the body can’t distinguish between them and those produced by the ovaries or testes. Because of this, these hormones can be measured in the blood and hence hormone treatment can be individualised to give lowest possible doses. On the other hand synthetic Hormone Replacement cannot be measured. One size does definitely not fit all in Women’s Health and by preparing hormone combination creams at a compounding pharmacy treatments are individualised. Bespoke hormone treatment and monitoring hormone levels gives the closest natural physiological treatment available. Thus ensuring safety, efficacy and cost effectiveness for the patient.

ANDROPAUSE Contrary to popular belief, Andropause does exist! A Low Testosterone level in men is damaging to health and it is wrong to ignore Andropause. Testosterone starts decreasing from 38 years old and DHEA (the “joie-de-vivre hormone) decreases from mid-twenties. Children’s Books by the Hundred ‘There is no child who cannot be hooked on books provided the right book is produced at the right moment.‛ - Jay Heale

ay Heale and children’s books are synonymous. Not only has he written several himself, but he has reviewed many hundreds more. Bookchat, an independent magazine about children’s books in South Africa was published by him for 21 years and he has produced many more reviews on-line, in other publications and on radio.

a right. Enlighten’s vision is to involve the whole Overstrand community in a drive to place 100 beautiful, age-appropriate books in each Grade R class in this region. Book and sport clubs, service organisations, retirement villages, businesses, youth groups and many more are invited to challenge each other to buy books for Enlighten to distribute to schools from Betty’s Bay to Gansbaai.

When Jay recently retired to Napier, he had to decide what to do with his valuable collection of over 800 children’s books. Thanks to the intervention of his friend and fellow author, Lesley Beake, the perfect solution was found. They would go to Enlighten Education Trust’s excellent Alex Bury Children’s Library in Hermanus, to live together happily ever after as a special collection.
