Out of Left Field M
any, many years ago when I was a little girl in Primary school, we had basic needle work classes where you had to sew a few simple stitches onto a lappie. Because I was left-handed, I had a hard time with the scissors and sewing from right to left which was the way it was supposed to be done (apparently). This was in the sixties remember. Left-handers were basically considered handicapped. Soon I lost confidence. I was clearly not good enough. In the following grade, we tackled a far more complicated project – we had to make a stuffed bunny. I was terrified. Luckily my Ouma (who was a mean seamstress, cookie queen, and my hero) helped me. In fact she ended up making the entire lime-green stuffed bunny with brown button eyes all by herself. The best Ouma and all I could earn for her effort was a C. Even with Ouma’s help I was doomed to be mediocre. Oh hell. I can still cope with being lefthanded, but being MEDIOCRE? Why don’t you just force me to go for rootcanal without anaesthetic? Or force me to watch replays of the President’s SONA and the subsequent embarrassing chaos. You get my point? Good enough should never be good enough. Fast forward to the end of 2019. For some reason I felt compelled to come up with a clothing range. I know, completely out of my comfort zone. I’m grateful that it’s been successful. No, I didn’t sew a stitch. I work with extraordinary people. Exceptional. Outstanding. Certainly not mediocre. The other day as I was driving over the mountain to collect fabric; it suddenly hit me. My Dad (who passed away when I’d just started High School) was in the clothing industry. Of course. I’ve come full circle. I’ve even learnt to sew in the meantime. And at this moment everything is exactly as it should be. How do I know this? I listen to my heart. Seriously, I do. You should try it. Yes, you heard me. Stop and listen. Be 4

still. Completely still. And once it has become completely quiet, listen to what your heart is telling you. This is not some airy-fairy stuff that I’m thumb-sucking. For centuries, Humans have tried to figure out what their purpose on earth is. That’s why some believe you come back to complete the journey. Trust me, the answer is inside you. You only have to listen. And once you have figured out what your heart’s desire is, take action. If it means you have to change direction, do so. Hoekom dink jy is jy so ongelukkig by die werk? Mense beny my dat ek so ‘n mooi winkel het. Maar dit kom nie vanself nie. Amulet gee my oneindige vreugde. Ek is ‘n closet smous.

‘No amount of money or recognition can compensate you if you are not doing your life’s passionate creative work; and if you are not doing it you had better draw everything to a complete stop until you can listen deeply to your soul, identify your heart’s desire and change direction. It’s that urgent. (Leonard Wolf) Nou toe, kom sit en luister.

THE GREEN HEALING SPACE:

umans and plants have been evolving together for millennia. We know each other: nature connecting to every one of our 50 trillion cells. Plants work on a cellular level to repair and balance our own physiology, while alleviating symptoms. It therefore doesn’t have side effects if used correctly. This is the major difference between mainstream and natural medicine. Warnings around the dangers of herbal remedies abound! It is mostly the prescription or OTC (over-the-counter) drugs that are bumped off the cell receptors because our cells recognise and prefer plants! Therefore, the medications accumulate and cause more side effects, and not the herbal remedies. We often forget that our natural state is to be healthy! Once this natural state is restored, health shines through. Of course, we also have to do some mind training to heal the messages (informational substances) we ourselves send to our cells! Read more about this on my website – under neuroplasticity and epigenetics.

relieve stress and anxiety. These herbs can also be taken as a tea, as well as hibiscus flowers, sage and rosehip. Echinacea, garlic, nasturtium flowers and leaves, camomile, sage and thyme are natural antibiotics which also support the immune system. Regarding the Coronavirus scare, the best advice is to support the immune system to do what it is supposed to do, and that is to support the body against all disease causing agents. I advise against reacting in fear to a viral threat, because the fear itself suppresses the immune system and is more contagious than any virus! Please remember that antibiotics are not effective against viruses at all! I therefore recommend Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) drops twice a day, 3 days before traveling, while away, and for a month after return. Echinacea is actually effective against viruses, bacteria and parasites (e.g. malaria). More information on Echinacea: https:// www.drarien.co.za/echinacea. Daily relaxation training, even 5 minutes of focused belly breathing practice every morning and evening, calms down the nervous system and waves of wellbeing ripple through to enhance heart and immune system function.
Some healing plants can be used every day, even as teas, ointments, salves, tinctures made from well known plants found in our gardens, others have to be used circumspectly, responsibly and under advice from a health practitioner knowledgeable about nature’s pharmacy. Herbs can even effectively support a fat loss program 1. Puerara lobata (Kudzu root) - supports general fat Herbs are fresh plants (root, flowers, seeds, leaves or loss and regulates blood sugar levels all of the above!) with healing or medicinal (botanical 2. Most herbs optimises fat metabolism, supports cardiorespiratory and spices (dried herbs) have all three characteristics and fitness, immune system health, endurance performance, these can be used freely. When you add herbs and spices while supporting the immune system and adrenal glands to your food, you not only improve the taste and aroma for stress resilience of the dish, you and your family are benefitting from the 3. Goji berry is one of the ‘most nutritionally dense fruit healing properties of the herbs. When you put a bunch on earth’. Fucus vesiculosus - supports thyroid gland function are herbs with a wealth of healing properties, acting and metabolism mostly as anti-inflammatories - they also improve the taste, flavour and texture of most foods. Essential oils of rose, lavender, camomile, orange DrArien.co.za), where specific herbs are recommended blossom and rose geranium can be added to a bath to to support different systems of the body. Also read about 6
Medical Cannabis (Part 1 and 2) on the website if you’re interested to know more about this and our marvellous Endocannabinoid System (ECS) and how to enhance its function through many herbal remedies. Herbs with medicinal properties specifically, can improve our health and wellbeing, while restoring physiological function to all the systems of the body – immune system, heart, nervous system, brain and so on. However, although herbs are natural, the ones with mostly medicinal value, must be used circumspectly, and some herbs are not always safe to take together with prescription medicine. An example is St John’s Wort, excellent for mild to moderate depression, but cannot be taken together with prescription antidepressants, because the last then become potentially more harmful. Ginkgo biloba, on the other hand, great for mild depression, high blood pressure, improved concentration and memory, can be used together with a prescription antidepressant, and I would then prescribe this to patients, while I support them throughout the process of gradually tapering their prescription antidepressants should they wish to do so. Ginkgo biloba has also been well researched for its efficacy in improving memory, concentration and blood supply to heart and extremities. It is a great support for neuroplastic renewal of those brain networks! The increased interest in the use of medicinal herbs does not mean that we always understand exactly how
The
they work. Plants are complex creations and forces of nature, where most active ingredients haven’t even been identified, and understandably, these compounds work together synergistically inside the plant. A herbal remedy therefore, is always much more complex than the use of single active ingredients. Far too little research has been done on the interaction of the various prescription medicines with each other. The pharmaceutical industry is well regulated, but there is not enough information and research on the interaction of prescription drugs with each other let alone the interaction between prescription drugs and herbs. Herbs are combinations of many ingredients. Do not randomly mix herbs with over-the-counter and prescription medication. If you are uncertain, consult someone who is knowledgeable on herbal remedies as well as prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Having said that, most herbs are beneficial and improve general health because they support our physiology naturally, gently and effectively. STILL BREATHING … hold your breath! You saw the banners, billboards, teasers on TV and ads bombarding your social media. Difficult to miss the huge building wrap at Multichoice City in JHB. Did you watch the first episode? It had me holding my breath. I was surprised to find I could still breathe after that! We saw drama, action, love and hurt, all forte word goes. A little like … well - LIFE! M-Net brings this 13-part series to your screens on Channel 101 on Thursdays at 20:00, M-Net’s family time and perfect for date night, nestled in front of your screen. Quality viewing from the makers of magic! “Still Breathing” is a story about “Life ... Death and the mess in between”. Brilliantly written and produced into a story of tragedy, betrayal, friendship and family. Secrets can only stay hidden for so long, and for this group of friends’ life does not show only its kind side. When a tragic accident claims the life of a member of the tribe, things spiral out of control. Director Johnny Barbuzano is a multiple SAFTA award winner. His wife, the talented Tiffany, who calls acting her first love, wanted to be an actress since she can remember. Tiffany is not only the creator, but also coproduces and plays the role of Jess. She admits that writing also lies close to her heart, but that acting plays a huge part in her writing of characters. Tiffany says she loved bringing these characters to life. ” I can “play” each of them in my head as I write them.” She describes writing as a “beautiful” and “powerful” process. “… creating worlds, characters and delve into relationships. There are always going to be parts of the writing that challenge you. Whether it’s because the mirror of life is suddenly held up to the characters or whether you just get a case of writers block.” Still Breathing has a special significance for Tiffany. She lost her older sister, Derryth on 8 February 2018 after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. This was a devastating experience for her. Writing about her loss and grief has been: “… incredibly cathartic”. Tiffany says the whole process of Still Breathing took about 2 years all in all and was shot in only 10 weeks, something she sees as a mere miracle itself, and admits it could not have been done with the quality work of the cast and crew. “We pitched the show in 2017 and started writing in 2018. This has been an incredible process for me. In SA you don’t often have the luxury of an extended development and writing schedule but MNET has been amazing. They are 100% aware that good scripts take time. I think for this, we’ve gone into draft 8 or 9 of some episodes. A true blessing.” - Tiffany After watching the first episode of Still Breathing I find myself looking at my feet in the morning before I put them down on the floor. Did you wonder about the significance of that? Tiffany explains. “A new day, a new dawn. It’s full of possibility.” Any writer will agree that you write about what (and who), you know. As a writer Tiffany says just that in our conversation and jokes with a quote she once read: “IF YOU DIDN’T WANT ME TO WRITE ABOUT YOU, YOU SHOULD HAVE BEHAVED BETTER”. She calls it the “emotional hook” she uses, she just finds it so much easier to “hear” her characters when she can see an element of someone, she knows in them. It’s no surprise that with Johnny and Tiffany as parents, another two members of the Barbuzano family is seen in the series. Jamie and Jess Barbuzano acts as Tiffany’s on-
set children. The rest of the cast does not disappoint either. Kate Liquorish, Fleur de Cap winner, as Abi, portrays a gripping performance. Another two leading ladies, Lorcia Kumalo, SAFTA winner and Shannon Esra, Naledi winner, only ads to a strong cast. Ty Keogh is one of the male leads and will wow you with his appearance. His former “The girl from St Agnes”, Jane de Wet will also be seen as part of the cast. The good news is that there is a Season 2 in the pipeline and much to my joy, Tiffany shares that there is also a movie and some more series in the planning. She also happily announces that Season 2 will have 13 weeks to shoot. I felt especially connected to Abi. The character touched me. There is more to her than she shows. Tiffany has this to say about Abi. “There are so many layers to Abi’s character. What we wanted to do was show how memory informs your current state of mind. We never know what is going on in the mind of other people. We have no idea of what they have gone through. So, Abi’s journey is one of self-discovery... And loss of control. Abi is a control freak - “A Type Abi” she’s called so we took that control from her. As we go through the series, you’ll see exactly what she is dealing with.” Unfortunately, betrayal also a part of life. We saw the character of Candice, as Abi’s best friend who betrays and hurts her. I had to wonder how Candice can live with herself? Tiffany had a kind word for Candice. “Candice is flawed. She is scared and lonely. She is lost. And I think she’s spent a lot of time convincing herself that what she is doing is ok. She truly loves Abi and she truly loves Trent. You’ll see as the series progresses why she makes the decisions she does.” Like in life people, have secrets and in Still Breathing It looks like these friends are all keeping secrets from each other. They do appear to be loyal, but are still keeping secrets from each other. Tiffany says that these friends are a group of essentially good people. Even good people can make bad decisions. “They are family, an assimilated family. But they have secrets. And they have reasons. They love each other but life has gotten in the way.” - Tiffany Jess and Danny, especially Danny, is hard at work with the restaurant he hopes to open. Danny is a plumber and Jess an amazing cook who cooks as a side job to get money for the family. Your typical Mom! But is this enough of a reason to open a restaurant? “Danny is a man who loves to bring joy to people. A restaurant with a skew towards families is something they have dreamed of for years. And it’s Danny’s manifestation of a midlife crisis I think. He HATES being a plumber and sees this as a chance to build something beautiful for his family. To fulfil a dream. Jessica knows her food brings joy (which is why she cooks all the time in the show, in various forms) and this family is all about bringing joy and love.” We see Tiffany as Jess, the role of a woman most mothers can relate to. I wanted to know from Tiffany which role she also would have liked to play? She also give us a tiny secret we can look forward to later in the series. “In the beginning I thought I’d perhaps play Abi. She has an incredible journey in the show but I think the more I thought about it, the more Jess called me. I wanted to sink my teeth into the character that most Moms can
Annette Havenga relate to. And I wanted to be part of the real love story... As opposed to the broken love story. Although you’ll be shocked when you see what Jess and Danny are up to, later in the show …” I tried to get Tiffany to spoil a little more about what we can expect in future episodes. She did not bite! These friends all appear to be good guys on the surface, but like with Candice we see there is another side to people. Will we see this from more characters? “Ah, now that would be telling. My advice is keep watching and see.” The story and the characters are all well written, has personality, truth and I do think the viewer will be able to relate to their lives and characteristics. The viewers have their favourites and dislikes. As we get to know the characters better - will we change our first impression? “Perhaps. But I do think that this is what the audience will love about this show. The characters are so well developed, 3 dimensional.... and inhabited so magnificently by the actors, you can’t help but love them. Even the flawed ones. Life is a journey and people will relate to the character that most reflects their place in their own journey. And their opinions will change as we uncover more of the story.” I wanted to know more about this very inspiring woman. Here’s a glance into the remarkable Tiffany Barbuzano, wife. Where will we find you if not on set or working on your next series or movie? “You’ll find me at the gym or with my boys. Or with my boys at the gym (he-he-he). Honestly, we love exploring as a family. We also love just being at home, all together. I find it hard to sit and do nothing though. I find I always need to be busy. I really love reading but have moved on to audiobooks now, because I simply don’t have a second to sit down and read. Or watching TV. I always say people in our industry need to watch all they can, we need to keep up with international trends and storytelling devices. It baffles me when people say “I don’t watch television” when they are film or television makers ... That’s like a doctor saying they don’t read the latest medical journals because they are doctors all day.” What is your favourite food? “Sushi or Pizza. Anything tastes good actually, when you’re surrounded by family and friends.” Your favourite holiday destination? “Cape Town or the North Coast in Durbs. Probably because my two best friends live in each of those places. Cape Town for the incredible food and Durbs for the weather and beach. “ Coffee or tea? “COFFEE!!!! I’d be lost without it.” Is Tiffany a morning or evening person? “I’m a little bit of both actually. I love the promise of a new day. But love the magic of the Moon. “ Can an animal lover like Tiffany choose between cats or dogs? “Oh, my word. I can’t choose. We have cats (Sam and Lily) and dogs (Jack and Tyrion) and if I choose a favourite, what if they read it? And then they’ll know!” Still Breathing airs on Thursdays at 20:00 on M-Net channel 101 For more info follow this link: https://m-net.dstv.com/ South/home Breathing greetings. Annette

In “MY FATHER’S COAT’’ he looks at the history of South Africa through the lives of 5 major role-players: Mzilikaze, Kruger, Rhodes, Smuts and Mandela and he weaves his story, finding links and correlations between these men and their vision for this country. His material is well researched, purposeful, thoughtful and thoughtprovoking, and is presented in an engaging and entertaining manner. Michael has played to audiences in Cape Town, Johannesburg and London. This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to see this much acclaimed show in Hermanus. (In aid of Hermanus Catholic Church). Are You a Serious Seller of Property?
If so, it is imperative that you are aware of these interesting facts!
If you need or choose to sell your property, you definitely need to ensure that you are clued up to the following very important facts in order to ensure an uncomplicated and smooth sale. In fact, your chosen estate agent should provide with the necessary guidance in respect of the following: 1. In whose interest is your estate agent acting? 2. Crucial information to provide to your estate agent 3. What type of selling mandates exist and what are their implications? 4. Does the Consumer Protection Act apply to the sale of your property? 5. In which entity do you own your property and what does this imply when selling? 6. What can you expect from your chosen estate agent in terms of service? 7. What are estate agents’ prescribed ethical obligations towards their clients? In this article we will only be discussing the first four of the abovementioned salient points. The last three will make up the content of our next communication in Splash. If you intend selling your property it is important that you keep both these articles at hand.
1. In whose interest is your estate agent acting? As we are all aware an estate agent deals with two parties with opposing interests. The seller wants to sell at the ‘best’ possible price and the purchaser wishes to buy at the ‘best’ possible price….and the estate agent is stuck in the middle! In terms of the Estate Agents Code of Conduct (CoC)… an estate agent shall protect the interests of his client at all times to the best of his ability, with due regard to the interests of all other parties concerned The question now arises: Who is the client? Buyer or seller? Here the common law rule ‘First in time, first in line’ applies. The agent’s client in terms of the CoC is the mandator. In the majority of cases the first mandator is the seller who gave the agent a mandate to sell his/her property. It can, however, in specific instances be a purchaser who mandates an agent to find him/her a specific property to buy that is not mandated to the agent by the owner thereof. (Like a piece of land with development potential or a house that he/she has always fancied that is not on the market). The agent then convinces the owner to sell to his mandator (the purchaser). Obviously in such an instance, the purchaser is the mandator/client.
2. Crucial information to provide to your estate agent Any competent and professional estate agent will require the following information from a potential seller in order to ensure a smooth sale: (These specific aspects are not discussed fully, but are emphasized to enlighten sellers to the importance of this knowledge). • Who is the rightful owner of the property? This needs to be disclosed as the owner whose name appears on the title deed may not have the right to sell the property in certain circumstances. Individuals, minors, married persons according to different marriage systems (see below), being married to a foreign individual, insolvent persons, deceased estates are all regulated differently with different rights, obligations and authorised persons when it comes to selling a property. • Is the seller married, and if so, according to which system? This is one of the important factors to consider when selling a
12
property in order to ensure a valid and binding agreement of sale. The seller can either be unmarried, married in community of property, in terms of an Ante-Nuptial Contract, in terms of the Civil Unions Act, by Muslim or Hindu Rights, in terms of a Foreign Marriage or a Customary Marriage. Each of these possibilities requires its own set of rules to ensure validity of a selling mandate and a sale agreement. • Is the seller a VAT vendor? If the owner is a VAT vendor and selling the property belonging to the VAT registered entity or person, the selling price needs to include VAT that will be paid to SARS on the sale and the purchaser will not be liable for Transfer Duty. (The VAT entity could also be utilising a portion of the house for his/her office or professional practice that would result in a pro rata portion of the purchase price being subject to VAT). When a VAT vendor’s property is advertised and the price does not state that it includes VAT, it is deemed to be included in the advertised price. • Is the seller a SA Resident? In the event that the seller is a non-resident, he/she must be informed in respect of Withholding Tax obligations. Should he/she not be informed, the estate agent and the conveyancer can be held liable by SARS for payment. • Has the seller made use of a mortgage loan? Outstanding value? Should the property be bonded it is important to ascertain whether the outstanding amount will be covered by the selling price. It must also be noted that the mortgagor must give the bank (the mortgagee) the required notice that the property is for sale so that the mortgage bond can be cancelled timeously in order to prevent the payment of penalties. • If the property is held by a legal entity/trust, who has the right to sign a mandate? In the event that the property that is to be sold, is owned by an existing Close Corporation (CC) any member may sign documents on behalf of the CC. If a property is owned by a company, the Companies Act, its Memorandum of Incorporation and possible registered company rules will prescribe who is authorised to act on behalf of the company. A trust is NOT a legal entity per se, and as such can only confer a mandate once it is in existence. This means that the letters of authority must be issued authorising the appointment of its trustees by the Master of the High Court before conclusion of any mandate. • Is the owner aware of any defects in the property? All defects whether patent or latent need to be disclosed to the estate agent when the property is listed. Most professional agencies provide a ‘declaration by the seller’ document to the seller to be filled in and signed when taking a mandate to sell the property on behalf of the seller. This is very important as it will ensure that all potential purchasers will be informed to the exact position of the seller with regards to his/her knowledge regarding defects. The voetstoots clause in the sale agreement means that the purchaser is buying the property ‘as is’ and that a reasonable inspection of the property has been undertaken. The voetstoots clause will however, NOT protect the seller from latent defects (those that cannot be detected during a reasonable inspection) of which he/she is aware and are purposefully being withheld in order to defraud the purchaser. • Verified personal information as required by the Financial Intelligence Centre Act (FICA) A huge responsibility lies on the shoulders of all accountable institutions (estate agencies, conveyancers and financial institutions) in respect of the prohibition of money laundering, terrorist activities and tax evasion. We MUST keep records of all our clients and verify their particulars (certified copy of ID and proof of domicile), assess any risks in dealing with them, report suspicious activities as well as all cash transactions above R25 000 regardless of being
Pam Snyman suspicious or not. Money laundering is deemed to be ANY practice in terms of which a person deals with money to obscure its illegitimate origins.
3. What type of selling mandates exist and what are their implications? There are basically 3 types of mandates that a seller can give to an estate agent: • An open mandate: When more than one agency is given the same mandate by the same client in respect of the same property, the mandate is an open one. It must contain an instruction, which the agent must accept. It can be verbal. • A sole mandate: A mandate incorporating an undertaking on the part of the person giving the mandate, not to confer a Tel 028 313 0359, 4 Broad Str Hermanus similar mandate on another estate agent before the expiry of a determined period. This clearly does NOT exclude the seller from selling the property himself during the course of the “sole mandate”… it only excludes other estate agents. • An exclusive sole mandate: Should the intention be to exclude the seller as well as other estate agents, the sole mandate must be worded as an EXCLUSIVE SOLE MANDATE. The legal consequences of such a mandate must be explained in writing in the mandate, i.e. that the seller will be liable for payment of damages in the event that this undertaking is breached. (Either sells himself, or through another estate agent)
4. Does the Consumer Protection Act apply to the sale of your property? The Act regulates the relationship between suppliers and consumers. A “supplier” is defined as any person who supplies goods or services in the ordinary course of business. “Business” means the continuous marketing of goods (including property) or services to consumers. The fact that they are probably registered with SARS as VAT vendors is a good (but not conclusive) indication. Suppliers in the property industry would thus include: • Property developers • Investors letting properties on a continuous basis • Investors/speculators who buy, renovate and sell houses as a business • Estate agents • Conveyancers The CPA does NOT apply to the following: • Sale or lease agreements where the seller is not selling or letting a property “in the ordinary course of their business”-- such as individuals who occasionally sell or let properties. There is thus no ‘supplier’ as per the Act definition. • In terms of Section 5 (2)(b) this Act also does not apply in terms of which the ‘consumer’ is a juristic person whose asset value or annual turnover equals or exceeds R2 million at the time of the transaction, but it does apply to all natural persons as consumers immaterial of their annual income if they are buying from or utilizing the services of a defined supplier.
All sellers of property should take note of the pertinent information above, and should they need further clarification (as an article of this nature cannot contain all the relevant facts) not hesitate to call Pam Snyman on 082 8000 867 or any of the REDZetc estate agents operating in your area.

Designing Outdoor Spaces
for Summer Entertaining Sarah Donnelly
R
ising temperatures and bright blue holiday skies may be luring you to entertain and dine al fresco this summer. After a season indoors, it doesn’t take much to compel us outside especially when the patio and deck are cleverly designed for relaxing or gathering with friends and family. Here’s What’s Hot If your patio is your second living room, then the kitchen can’t be confined within the house walls either. Let it loose! The simple braai area has really grown up and been transformed into a fully equipped outdoor kitchen space. Indoor-outdoor braais that can be utilized from both sides are also growing in popularity. The firepit too has advanced itself with additional features such as built-in firepit tables and stylish furniture sets. A patio firepit creates an interesting focal point which not only makes your space feel larger but also works well as a gathering point for you and your guests. Zone Out If you have a large outdoor area, it will be necessary to define the spaces in relation to their functions. You don’t have to physically divide the spaces, but it’s very important that every part has a clear function. The relax zone, for example, must be separated from the gathering one and every zone should ideally be designed, paying attention to light and shades. Get Matted Outdoor rugs are a design must for defining different spaces and giving your outdoors a WOW factor. Outdoor rugs come in a huge range of stylish colours, patterns and textures and are both super-easy to clean and an inexpensive way to create your outdoor vibe. A good quality rug can be used both indoors and outdoors so merely utilize it inside your home in the winter months. Look out for reversible rugs so that you can transform your colour scheme at the flip of a mat.
Multi-Functional Fabrics Due to advances in fabric technology, in many instances it has become nearly impossible to tell the difference between indoor and outdoor fabrics thus allowing us a much greater flexibility in the placement choices of our favourite textiles. Fire retardant qualities in materials are essential for pieces utilized near braais or firepits. Good quality outdoor fabrics should be tested for water, fade, mould and fire resistance to maximise their usage and longevity. Once again, look out for reversible fabrics that give you the benefit of versatility and changing things up as you desire. Living the Patio It has been clear for some years now that gardening is a trend even for people without a garden. If you have limited outdoor space, then living walls, compact pots and small greenhouses can transform patios into small botanical gardens with some careful spatial planning. Old generation thinking is that a surface is just the ground or floor. The new generation of thinkers see in 3D and a surface is anything you can see, suspend in mid-air, or view on a screen or technology. The Swinging 20’s Whether on small balconies or in large gardens, outdoor life is synonymous with relaxation. In the 2020’s modular, transformable, super-resistant and multifunction lounge furniture is in full swing. The trend is hanging furnishings such as chairs, armchairs and daybeds that allow you to swing yourself without thinking about anything. Illumination If you have an enclosed patio, hanging pendant lighting above your dining table is a lovely way to create an intimate eating area or a romantic setting. Hanging an assortment of lanterns, fairy lights or LED lit pots is also ambience enriching. Another option for

finding the perfect lighting setup for your patio is to try out patio umbrellas with builtin LED lights. These patio umbrellas offer protection from the sun during the day and then can light up your space at night. Trends Summary The predominant outdoor trends for 2020 include neutral palettes but vibrant, patterned or highly textured accessorizing, multifunctional furniture and even more green living. The trend of indoor-outdoor living has been banging around for so many years that it has almost become a cliché. But watch it explode to a new level next year and enjoy the view!

Dis logies.
Daar is duidelike voorbeelde daaravan in vandag se spel. “Hoekom sê ek so?” is die vraag!
Lekker rugby kyk.

ELVIS PRESLEY
Elvis Aron Presley was born on January 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi. He later changed the spelling of his middle name to the biblical form of Aaron. Elvis was one of a twin, but his brother Jesse was stillborn. Raised by loving, working-class parents, his family had little money, and they moved from place to place frequently. He was deeply devoted to his parents, especially his mother, Gladys, and was raised to have a strong faith in God. Elvis attended the Assembly of God Church with his parents, where gospel music became an important influence for him. ‘n Paar jaar later wen hy ‘n talent kompetisie by Humes High School in Memphis. Hy voltooi skool in 1953 en terwyl hy sy musiekdroom najaag verrig hy verskeie werke. Hy sny sy eerste plaat by Sun Records in daardie jaar en platebaas, Sam Phillps, besluit om die jong man op sy pad vorentoe te help. Sy heel eerste enkelsnit ‘That’s All Right’ word in 1954 uitgereik. By then Elvis was already a flamboyant personality, with relatively long greased-back hair and wild-coloured clothing combinations, but his full musical personality did not emerge until he and the band began playing with blues singer Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup’s song ‘That’s All Right Mama’ in July 1954. They arrived at a startling synthesis, eventually dubbed rockabilly, retaining many of the original’s blues inflections but with Elvis’s high tenor voice adding a lighter touch and with the basic rhythm striking a much more supple groove. This sound was the hallmark of the five singles he released on Sun over the next year. Although none of them became a national hit, by August 1955, when he released the fifth, ‘Mystery Train’, arguably his greatest record ever, he had attracted a substantial Southern following for his recordings, his live appearances in regional roadhouses and clubs, and his radio performances on the nationally aired Louisiana Hayride. From 1956 through 1958 he completely dominated the best-seller charts and ushered in the age of rock and roll, opening doors for both white and black rock artists. His television appearances set records for the size of the audiences. Even his films were box office smashes. Elvis became the teen idol of the decade, greeted everywhere by screaming hordes of young women and, when it was announced in early 1958 that he had been drafted and would enter the U.S. Army, there was that rarest of all pop culture events, a moment of true grief. More important, he served as the great cultural catalyst of his period. Elvis returned from the army in 1960, where he had served as a soldier in Germany rather than joining the Special Services entertainment division. Those who regarded him as commercial hype without talent expected him to fade away. Instead, he continued to have hits from recordings stockpiled just before he entered the army. Upon his return to the States, he picked up pretty much where he had left off, churning out a series of more than 30 movies (from Blue Hawaii to Change of Habit) over the next eight years, almost none of which fit any genre other than “Elvis movie”, which meant a light comedic romance with musical interludes. Most had accompanying soundtrack albums, and together the movies and the records made him a rich man. Elvis did his best work in the 1960s on singles either unconnected to the films or only marginally stuck into them, recordings such as ‘It’s Now or Never (‘O Sole Mio’)’ (1960), ‘Are You Lonesome Tonight?’, ‘Little Sister’ (both 1961), ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love’, ‘Return to Sender’ (both 1962), and ‘Viva Las Vegas’ (1964). He was no longer a controversial figure; he had become an entertainer, a personage of virtually no interest to the rock audience that had expanded so much with the advent of the new sounds of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and Bob Dylan. Some trivia about Elvis: • He never toured outside North America. • He was blessed with a remarkable memory. • When Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller met him in 1956, they were astonished at his encyclopedic understanding of the blues. • Between 1977 and 1981, six posthumously released singles by Elvis were top ten country hits. • Graceland was opened to the public in 1982. Attracting over half a million visitors annually, it is the second most-visited home in the United States, after the White House. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 2006. • Elvis has been inducted into five music halls of fame: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1986), the Country Music Hall of Fame (1998), the Gospel Music Hall of Fame (2001), the Rockabilly Hall of Fame (2007), and the Memphis Music Hall of Fame (2012). In 1984, he received the W. C. Handy Award from the Blues Foundation and the Academy of Country Music’s first Golden Hat Award. In 1987, he received the American Music Awards’ Award of Merit. • Elvis holds the records for most songs charting in Billboard’s top 40 and top 100: Chart statistician Joel Whitburn calculates the respective totals as 104 and 151; • He holds the records for most British number-one hits with 21, and topten hits with 76. • A vast number of recordings have been issued under Elvis’s name. The total number of his original master recordings has been variously calculated as 665 and 711.

Stanford MTB Classic was set to impress
T
he 2020 Stanford MTB Classic, an Overberg MTB Events race took take place on the 29th of February and 1st of March. In order to ensure that newcomers and returning riders alike were treated to a spectacular weekend of mountain biking the event’s route was revamped. It now boasts more single-track than ever and more opportunities to immerse oneself in the stunning Stanford Valley Guest Farm and Paardenberg surrounds. Offering two days of riding, with a longer (± 50 kilometres) and a shorter (± 25 kilometres) route options, the Stanford MTB Classic is the perfect active family getaway. Located just 155 kilometres from the Cape Town city centre the race village is an easy Friday afternoon drive away. All entry options included lunches at the Stanford Valley Guest Farm race village and accommodation reservations were assisted through Stanford Tourism.
Off the bike the atmosphere was one of relaxed country life. The vast lawns of the race village were dotted with oaks under which riders could unwind in the shade post-stage, sharing stories from the trails or revelling in their shared love of the outdoors. Family members and spectators were welcome too with extra meal tickets available to purchase for non-riders. Tables could be booked at the venue’s Manor House restaurant; allowing supporters to relax in comfort over a scrumptious meal and a glass of award-winning local wine while the mountain bikers took on the trails. As well as being open for lunches throughout the race, the Manor House was also open for pre-race breakfasts and sunset dinners. On the bike the riding at the Stanford MTB Classic has been refined. The opening day featured a 40-kilometre loop, which took in 630 metres of climbing. It started at Stanford Valley Guest Farm, be-
fore heading south towards Óak Grove Farm and the first of the event’s Strava sections, Lucerne Sea. After passing through the Vaalvlei vineyards the route turned towards Stanford itself, passing through the Sir Robert Stanford, Welgesind and Stanford Hills farms. From the highest reaches of their vineyards the valley floor spread out in an emerald carpet to the south east, showcasing natural fynbos, flower farms and vineyards bordered by mountains to the north and low hills, which separate the valley from the ocean, to the south. The route then crossed the Kleinrivier and headed for home at the Stanford Valley Guest Farm. The day’s short route option was 27 kilometres in length. Stage 2 was the race’s action-packed play day. On the Stanford Valley Guest Farm and Paardenberg farms in particular, trail building took place at a frantic pace since the 2019 Stanford MTB Classic. In 2020 it is now 53 kilometres
routes feature much of the longer route’s best scenery, but with less of the exertion. They are ideal for riders with competent bike handling skills but who find themselves short of the fitness required for a three hour, plus, ride.” The Stanford MTB Classic is not a race, in the traditional sense. Times are taken via Strava for designated sections on the route. Each day the man and woman with the fastest combined time for the day were rewarded with a prize, as was the fastest man and woman, overall, after the two stages. long and features 950 metres of climbing. Starting and finishing at Stanford Valley Guest Farm again; Day 2 began with a climb, turned left at Lucerne, and took riders around the Stanford Valley Guest Farm dam and up the new singletrack to the bench. From there it flowed down to the start of the new Slipstream singletrack which took riders over three bridge crossings and snaked all the way up to the Beloftebos Bitterbal Bult singletrack. This featured beautiful fynbos and rock formations overlooking Stanford Valley Guest Farm and the Raka wine farm. The trail dropped towards Beloftebos to follow the Wabooms River. Skirting the Paardeberg farmlands the route looped south and then west, traversing the Hartebees and Protea Link single-tracks on the way back to Stanford Valley Guest Farm. “It was important for us to showcase the spectacular riding, in a region not traditionally associated with mountain biking” event director Anneke Jacobs explained. “Stanford Valley Guest Farm put in an exceptional amount of work, building new trails, which mountain bikers will now be able to visit throughout the year. Permits to ride the trails can be purchased at Stanford Valley Guest Farm; which also boasts a restaurant which is open for breakfasts and lunches, as well as accommodation options. The Stanford
MTB Classic is thus a first taste of the adventures the Stanford area has on offer and we hope that participants in the event return for weekends in the platteland later in the year.” “The distances in the Stanford MTB Classic may be short” Jacobs continued. “But the terrain is deceptively tough at times. The longer route option is certainly not for inexperienced mountain bikers. We believe it is perfect though for long-time riders to take part in for the simple pleasure of riding their bikes and for experienced mountain bikers who have yet to take part in a multi-day race to experience their first stage race in. 50 years of caring for animals. The Hermanus Animal Welfare Society celebrated its 50th birthday in 2019. 50 years of caring for animals in need in the greater Overstrand area, and in that time we have treated, sterilised, re-homed, fostered and adopted out thousands of dogs and cats (with some pigs, rabbits and birds for good measure!). We also provide an educational project which teaches the youth how to treat their animals and prevent neglect and unwanted puppies and kittens. Our clinic treats injured and sick pets belonging to underprivleged owners either free of charge or for a minimal fee. This is all achieved by the hard work of a dedicated managing committee who all offer up their time and expertise free of charge. HAWS receives no monetary assistance from any government institution and relies solely on donations and fundraising to keep their operation afloat. This year we are focusing on our sterilisation programme and hope to exceed the 657 sterilisations we achieved last year with the

help of local vets. This is so important to keep the number of unwanted and stray animals down and prevent suffering. Our main fundraising project this year will be our Debit Order project, whereby the public can sign up for the debit order of their choice to provide us with ongoing funds. These will also really help to fund the sterilisation project. If anyone is interested in assisting us by taking out a debit order, the relevant information and forms can be obtained from our Vice Chairperson, Marlene Deneeghere on the following e-mail address: marlenede@nashuaisp.co.za We would so appreciate your contribution, no matter how small! Thank you!
