what you’re letting yourself in for. Make no mistake, I have the best builder ever, but even he didn’t expect boulders the size of my car to come out of the wall they were breaking through. As I write this my customers are high on paint fumes, but so far everyone is very positive about the planned extension. And hopefully by the time this article sees the light Mooi, mooier Amulet will be big, bigger more Awesome Amulet.

and the good news is… Sjoe… Give me a minute. Let me think. Hard. Don’t rush me… I’m thinking… At my age it takes a while to formulate a coherent sentence. Okay, there you have one: The good news about getting older : Once you hit 50 you can start using the ‘at my age it’s not so easy to… exercise / work / cook / park my car /remember’ … fill in the appropriate feeble excuse. You can also pretend not to hear irritating people. (Not that I would ever do that) At my age no one expects you to be slim, trim, tanned, or a gym freak. Not that it’s going to stop me from trying. Spring is here afterall. That’s another snippet of good news. And boy, do we need a couple of snippets! If you watch the news every night (as I do) or read the daily newspapers it would seem that there is no such thing as good news in sunny South Africa. We’re not unique – negative sentiment has taken over the world. Even our sport teams are struggling. But, being the eternal optimist, come the World Cup I will be wearing my Springbok jersey. And I will be running up and down screaming at the ref and willing the Boks to score (therefore getting that much needed exercise at the same time.)

ESKOM is the bane of every South African’s existence. (excluding all the ex Eskom CEOs who’ve received golden handshakes for a job badly done, thank you very much. Another bonus of old age – you can claim you’re eccentric and say what you like.) However, think of all the new jobs that have been created (by default) – new solar companies, generator and long-life battery manufacturers have mushroomed. And of course this time round load-shedding is not as unpredictable as in 2008. Fellow South Africans have come up with websites and Apps to tell us when Stage 1, 2 or 3 may take place. (Alas, not a theatrical term.) My favourite App is called ESKomsepush. (You need to understand Afrikaans to get it, no not the App, the innuendo, ag nevermind.) Net soos Eskom versuur tolpaaie die belastingbetaler se lewe. ‘Wat karring sy so oor die spul. Ek dag die artikel gaan oor goeie nuus’, mor jy onderlangs. Daar’s ‘n ligpuntjie.

frisbee oor ‘n slapende hond se kop, moenie kwel nie. Ek gaan binnekort by die punt uitkom…

Alles wonderlike nuus. The whales haven’t given up on us. I haven’t given up on us. In fact I’m so confident of the future that we’re expanding. The shop, not the family or my waistline. Luckily before you start building you never quite realise

SPLASH 4

Sometimes I secretly wonder if maybe I’m not just a hoarder. A hoarder of beautiful stuff that can no longer fit into my house and garage and now that the shop is also bursting at the seams I have been forced to expand side-ways… Well, too late to worry about that now. Apparently (according to Monique) there are only 2 valid questions when Helene acquires new stock: 1) Is it pretty? 2) Can I sell it? Whenever I arrive with new treasures Percy looks at me in horror and wonders where everything is going to. To the new space, hallo! is my answer, what a stupid question. When my darling husband points out that the new space is filling up at a rapid rate and reminds me that we also want space to expand the coffee shop, I simply point to the ceiling. If in doubt, suspend it! Okay, more good news. Somehow (I’m way too stupid to understand why) the stock exchange is faring very well. Surely that means something. The big money knows something about our country that mere mortals just don’t get. What I do get is that South African mortals are a tough bunch. If you boikot us we’ll simply come up with our own better cheaper version. We’ve come up with the Cat Scan to the Creepy Crawley to Pratley Putty to Q20. Unique South African inventions, hallo. Are we awesome or what? Oh yes, and if you miss your favourite programme you can be sure that the magical channel will show it again… and again… and again… Even if it wasn’t your favourite programme they will re-broadcast it again… again… and again… oh yes and again. Sometimes even a good thing gets too much… The good news is that there are more good people than bad in the world. I know that for a fact. I see them coming into my shop on a daily basis. Yes, of course you get the odd exception, but those we kill with kindness. They are outnumbered. And I flatly refuse to believe otherwise. My mom is nearing eighty and you will find her on the tennis court every day. She is far fitter than me… okay, basically everyone is fitter than me. I do pretty, not sweaty. The fact that my mom is an avid tennis player is not that extraordinary. The fact that she has had both her knees replaced and despite a painful back operation and broken arm, she still plays tennis. That is extraordinary. She phones me last week to tell me that she’s having another operation. Oh no. What happened. She was playing a match last week, her replaced knee ‘locked’ and she lost an important point. She promptly phoned the doctor and she’s having said knee replaced. I should mention that my mother is a tad competitive. How is that for a positive attitude! In a couple of weeks’ time she will be back on the court smashing balls all over the place. Let’s hope she doesn’t lose another important point. Who knows what could be replaced next. Maybe her husband?… Oops that’s no laughing matter. Or maybe it is. Depends how you look at it… And that’s the actual good news. If you change your mind about the recession, the corruption, the whatever is irking you, you can influence someone else to do the same and so the positivity will gather momentum and before you know it you’ll be one of those wonderfully irritating people who’s always in an excellent mood. And we can all gather in my happy place. If I don’t see you on the tennis court, I’ll see you in Amulet – probably suspended from the ceiling!

A New Look at Retirement Investing Products and the Magic of Returns

The Hermanus Investment Society meets again on Tuesday, 22nd September at Misty Waves, Westcliff. This meeting will be about using various retirement products as efficient investment vehicles. If you think these products have a rotten reputation, think again. They offer flexibility, tax efficiency and other benefits, also to people already retired. The investment vehicle will perform as well as what you invest in. So yes, you do need to pay attention to how the retirement product is invested, the right mix of assets and of course, strategy. Yet don’t underestimate the importance of saving a few percent per annum in tax and costs , or finding good investment performance. A competent financial advisor or wealth manager can assist. What got us onto this subject, was my husband, a pilot, mentioning that when he is in the cockpit, just one degree off course – will result in miles off course in just an hour. Investors who are blissfully unaware that they are just one degree wrong in their mix or selection of investments, or in their tax efficiency, can really miss out on gains that are so easy to have, in a relatively short time. Ignoring the impact of tax, or ignoring net underperformance of returns of just 1% per annum e.g. at 14% p.a. instead of 15% p.a., in an average equity portfolio of R1m invested for 10 years, would mean R338 336 in lost gains or delay. 1%’s add up so quickly. And you will sleep better if your financial plan and investments are aboard the same aeroplane, on course, tax efficiently. So the meeting will look at how to use these retirement products tax and cost efficiently, with best flexibility and how to get the magic of compounding working for you. The guest speaker is Hamilton van Breda, head of retail sales and distribution at Prudential Investment Managers; Janet Hugo CFP® of Sterling Private Wealth, Hermanus will be leading the discussion. She has been Chair of the Investment Committee of the Financial Planning Institute of South Africa for several years and she has broad investment management and professional financial advisor experience. The meeting will start at 4:30 pm and finish at about 6:00pm. Canapes and Sushi Snacks, accompanied by a wine tasting by Cape Winemakers Guild Member Bartho Eksteen, from Wijnskool, will follow in the Mon Desir restaurant next to the conference facilities.

If you are interested in attending one of our meetings, please let us know. eMail: marietjie@ sterlingwealth.co.za or call us at 0861 888 987. The Hermanus Investment Society asks for a R100 donation per person towards costs. Any profits will be donated to local charities. Events are designed to help the public gain critical investment-related knowledge. This information is not readily available elsewhere. The sessions are interactive. Typically short, an hour-and- a- half, including questions.

'n Paar goeie redes

waarom jy die

(Verklarende Handwoordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal) 1. 2. 3. 4.

nuwe HAT

moet koop:

Ek smelt soos ’n KFC roomys. Hierdie skip moet ons Floating Market toe neem. Ek sê ’n gebedjie op. Ons vaar nie stadig of statig nie. Ons moer rivier-af teen

’n helse spoed. Ek hoor my man sê vir iemand: “No don’t, she will be scared”, maar

wis nie wat aangaan nie. Ek staan nog so en sweet afvee, toe sê ’n hees stem hier langs my: “Hello lady, look what I’ve got for you.” Ek draai my kop na regs. My longe val plat en my hart hou op klop. ’n Sentimeter van my gesig en straight in my face, is ’n luislang se kop! Ek spin soos ’n hondsdolhaas, hardloop in sirkels totdat my man my vang en vashou. “Give balm,” sê sy , give balm, it relax”. “Very nice snake, won’t bite.”

SENSUAL SILHOUETTE

SEPTEMBER

Have you reached that point in your life where you think "if I could just do this"- lifting skin up the face towards the ear. Not a face lift just a little upward traction. Now you can! On the back of six years of research in USA, Silhouette Soft has been developed to give a “one-stitch mini-lift”. No surgery, no knife, just a thin thread placed under the skin.

the thread. Essentially as the thread disappears it is replaced by your own collagen thread which remains long after the time. Certain doctors report the lift to last 3-5years. Persons do however continue to age and one could possibly require another thread about 5 years later.

how many threadS are uSed? There is no limit to how many threads can be used. Most patients only have one thread per side, but you can have up to three threads at one sitting or at a later date.

how doeS the thread work with other aeSthetic anti-aging procedureS? The thread lift is often combined with other procedures such as Botox or fillers. It depends on each individual and the physician will tailor make your treatment for the best possible results. It is possible to do the filler and Botox at the same time as the procedure. It is recommended that the patient not have any massaging or hot therapies after the Silhouette lift. We generally recommend that should the patient require laser or peels that these are done before the Silhouette.

can the thread be uSed to lift any other areaS? So, how iS the procedure done? Doctor measures the face and decides in which direction the lift needs to be; then, gives a small local anaesthetic injection into the skin. Once this is done, the worst is over. The thread has a needle attached to either end and this is slid under the skin towards the jaw line and the other end towards the mouth or offending jowl. The thread has little cones on, which when the skin is pulled taut, the cones ensure the lift stays in place.

how long doeS the procedure take?

The threads can be used to lift any sagging area where there is subcutaneous fat. This includes the neck, eyebrow, arm, stomach and buttocks. Doctors in Russia have even performed breast lifts with just the threads, but so many threads are used that the cost outweighs the benefits.

how much doeS the procedure coSt and how can i book? The thread lift costs R8000 for one thread per side. R14, 000 for two threads per side. Most people only require one thread per side. You can contact Refine Clinic, details below and book your complimentary consultation or procedure. Written by Dr Michelle Emett. Owner Aesthetic Medical Practice

The actual threading is no longer than 30 minutes but we usually book an hour appointment to give the doctor time with the patient and for the anaesthetic to work.

how long iS the "down time"? When the patient leaves the doctors rooms, the lift is in place. However, there may be some tension on the skin around the ear where the skin has been pulled up. This bunching may be present for up to 4 days but usually only lasts a day or two. The patient will feel a slight give as the skin relaxes. It is because of skin elasticity that the skin can relax without losing the lift. Patients usually just cover the ears with hair during the first few days. The only other complication that could lead to down time is the possibility of bruising. Though rare, bruising can occur and this usually takes a week to resolve.

how doeS it work? The thread works in two ways. Firstly, one sees an immediate lift action due to the thread and cones. Secondly, there is a regenerative action for gradual and natural results. As the thread dissolves Silhouette Soft restores your lost collagen to give more definition to your features while maintaining volume over time.

iS it Safe? Silhouette Soft is a very safe procedure. Over 7000 treatments have been done to date worldwide and the number is growing exponentially. The material is made from a substance used to make heart valves. No allergic reactions to the substance have been reported and it dissolves over a18 month period. Dr. Emett is the first doctor to have brought Silhouette to South Africa two years ago. As such, she has been asked to train doctors on behalf of the company. She is considered an expert in the procedure, having done over 100 procedures to date.

how long will the effect laSt? As mentioned, above the thread lasts 18 months but the lift lasts up to 36 months. Over that period, the thread stimulates your body to produce its own collagen, which is laid down on top of

MEDICALLY ASSISTED WEIGHT

LOSS PROGRAMME

How does this work?

► What is Reshape? Reshape is a weight loss program that primarily focus on fat loss. By using Lipolytic in combination with a very low calorie diet you will lose up to 30% more abnormally stored fat as opposed to a reduced calorie diet on its own.

We are prepaired - Electricity 24/7 - Free WiFi for our clients Pensioners get 20% off Mondays to Fridays

► How does it work? The combination of the medication and the specially formulated eating plan will trigger the body to tap into your abnormal fat stores as a source of energy. By tapping into your fat reserves you will release a substance called leptin that will trigger your satiety centre in your brain and give you a feeling of “fullness”. Lipolytic also increases your serotonin (happy hormone) levels thus increasing your mood. The end result being: • Weight Loss (fat loss) • increased energy levels • Decreased hunger • Increased in mood ► Can anyone do the program? Because it’s a natural product it is safe and has no side effects. However you have to see your doctor to rule out any medical cause for your weight problem.

SPRING INTO SUMMER AT PROACTIVE FITNESS!

Improve Results by Getting Mentally Tough

by Mathew Browne

A strong mind is a strong body. You’ll be able to handle stress, cope with suffering, deal with adversity, make sacrifices, and push through limitations; it is the key to becoming something greater. This is how you conquer every goal, every workout and every challenge. But building mental toughness isn’t easy. It takes work and practice to get your brain to a point where it is willing to push longer and harder than it ever was before. I have put together 3 ways we teach you to train your mind so you don’t fatigue and most importantly don’t quit. I call them success strategies; LET’S GO.

Science has proven that music can boost athletic performance. But the key here is to find music that inspires and motivates you. The music distracts you from your effort and allows you to go harder. So when you’re training to pass a challenging physical test or to break a personal record, listen to one specific song. Do this on your “hard training” days only. Then, come test day, blast the song. You’ll feel it throughout your body, invigorating you to go harder and longer just like you practised.

6 Athletes - ONE Gym - 1 Stage! were times when it seemed, that we were looking up at Everest with nothing but a Mandrill in our hands, nevertheless we forged ahead, to reach our summit on which the Overberg flag now flies high! The teams expenses included transportation, accommodation and event expenses - Affiliation fees, stage fees, compulsory spray tans, hair, make-up and stage outfits, backstage hands etc. The Proactive Hermanus Team secured some great sponsorships to assist in their many expenses. They would like to take this opportunity to thank them here.

S

ix members of Proactive Fitness Gym - took part in this years BBSA (Body Building South Africa) & IFBB (International Federation of Body Building) Western Provincials. The "Proactive Hermanus Team" (PHT) were the most amount of contestants that we are aware of, that have ever gone to the same fitness stage, from the same gym, within the Overberg. Which we are very proud of! This sports event is quiet big on the fitness athletes calendar, as it commences roughly around the same time of year, for all the major provinces, from which contestants that take part, within their various divisions, are selected to represent at the SA Championships which will be held in Pretoria on the 5th of September 2015. The Proactive Team were required to be in Cape Town the day before the show, for weighin's and registrations. The Pre-judging took place on Saturday the 22nd of August 2015 at 9am - and the main show took place that night for all to enjoy, at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology at 5pm. All who appeared on this competitive stage, did so - for the very first time. All, except one - Nic Lotter, who is a full time Personal Trainer at Proactive Fitness. Nic, assumed the role of "Coach" from the word go, as well as competitive athlete! With ten years worth of training wisdom and competitive body building experience under his belt, the team were in good hands. Under Nic's guidance and encouragement the team prepared for between 10 - 16 weeks, each with their own forms of intense weight training - at least 5 days a week. Along with a very strict diet. Though I am sure his team would agree - that there

A huge thanks first and foremost belongs to the owner of Proactive Fitnness - Mathew Browne, who not only sponsored our team a generous amount of cash & bought our team shirts, but moreover and most importantly (in my humble opinion) made our second home 'the gym' that we all love, what it is. He gives his absolute all, every single day - with what seems like total ease... Mat! We love you! Secondly Proactive's resident Biokineticists Wilson & Schnieder Biokinetics, Thanks Michelle & Riaan, both your support is so appreciated. A big thanks goes to our good friends Mark & Jackie Brindley, who are the new owners of an amazing Barber shop in Mitchell Street, with amazing men's products available! To the parents - Mr. Botha and Mr. & Mrs. Hendriks, of 2 of our contestants who contributed financially Thank you so much, having family like this in our corner, is what makes it all worth it! To Rudolf - The owner of The Burgundy who sponsored us a great team-building breakfast! what a taste experience after weeks of dieting - Thank you! To My Design - who sponsored the printing of our team apparel - a huge thank you! To Derek van Zyl who helped secure a good amount of financial support on our behalf - it was great to work with someone who understands what it takes. To everyone else - who offered up, helped out and added in, each in their own amazing way - you know who you are! We thank you...Everyone's support was truly appreciated and helped the team represent the Overberg with pride!

Finally on a more personal note...To all of our friends & families who supported us through all the tough times, of hard training and strict dieting, who cheered us on, despite everything - we truly could not have done this without you all!!! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Names, ages and category divisions according to the photo are as follows: (Back Row, Men standing from left to right) Travis Botha (25) will be standing for Athletic Physique. Nic Lotter (30) Senior Mens Heavy weight. Andre Joubert (41) Masters Over 40. Cameron Hendricks (18) Juniors under 23. (Front Row Ladies) Left: Belinda Bal (39) Fitness Bikini. Quick tips on how to Taste Wine

2

1 Bouchard Finlayson

1. Look

Check out the color, opacity and viscosity. You don’t really need to spend more than 5 seconds on this step.

. .. .. .

2. Smell

Pick out at least 2 flavors and take your time identifying them. There are 3 types of wine aromas: Primary Aromas come from grapes and include fruit, herb and flower notes Secondary Aromas come from fermentation and yeast aromas. Tertiary Bouquets come from aging, oxidation and oak such as baking spices, nutty aromas and vanilla.

Hamilton Russell Vineyards

R320 Southern Right Whalehaven Hermanuspietersfontein

3. Taste

Two elements make up taste: flavor and structure. Flavors such as lemon, raspberry or coconut. Structure such as the level of sweetness, body, alcohol, acidity, and tannin. Profile. The taste of wine is also time-based, there is a& beginning, TO VILLIERSDORP FRANSCHHOEK middle (mid-palate) and end (finish). A B C Hottentots Holland NR

Peri–Peri Biefespetadas In National Braai Day, we South Africans have a realistic opportunity to entrench and cement a national day of celebration for our country, within our lifetimes. I believe that having a national day of celebration can play a significant role in nation-building and social cohesion as the observance of our shared heritage can truly bind us together. In Africa, a fire is the traditional place of gathering. I urge you to get together with your friends and family around a fire on 24 September every year to celebrate our heritage, share stories and pass on traditions. Unite around a fire, share our heritage and wave our flag. Please help me spread that word!

Jan Braai

M

VIR DIE MARINADE 8 huisies knoffel ’n paar klein brandrissies (verkieslik African bird’s eye) ½ koppie olie ½ koppie druiweasyn ½ koppie vars suurlemoensap ½ koppie water 1 sopie paprika 1 sopie brandrissiepoeier 1 sopie sout

V I R D I E E S P E TA D A S 2 kg kruissnit 8 sosatiepenne

laat Waai! 3. Die marinade is nogal sterk, so dit sal lank genoeg wees.

V I R D I E E S P E TA D A S 1. 4.

Energy Efficiency on everyones Lips “But does it suck up the dirt?”

N

ot only in South Africa are we concerned with the energy consumption of electrical appliances.

With a worldwide drive towards producing electrical appliances that comply with reduced energy consumption, it may come as a breath of fresh air that MIELE has always placed the focus on cleaning performance alongside electricity consumption – and not simply to comply with the new EU regulation. European Standards addressing South African energy concerns: The new criteria and threshold values for vacuum cleaners are derived from the European Eco Design Guideline. This new legislation caps the maximum power output to 1600W and classifies appliances not only according to energy consumption, but also in terms of dust pick-up on carpets and hard flooring, as well as dust emissions. Given this new situation, Miele has completely reappraised its range and is now pursuing a dual strategy of high suction performance and low consumption. From the feedback we receive in store most customers are not willing to accept noticeable reductions in cleaning performance in return for maximum energy efficiency. To address both parameter perfectly Miele have introduced the C1 and C3 range of vacuum cleaners, which do both beautifully. Impressive energy efficiency: The heart and soul of the latest addition to Miele’s new range boasts an 800W motor with a power-regulating chip. This electronic device regulates power uptake during vacuum cleaning, keeping it at a constant level and automatically adjusting to situations as they change to ensure that no energy is wasted. Performance is further enhanced through the use of air bypasses and smooth-running bearings. Improved dust removal: The fact that this model also achieves an A-rating for dust pick-up is not least the result of the interplay of entirely newly developed components. These comprise a powerful electrobrush with its own motor, which drives a beater bar that improves the removal of dust particles, whilst still ensuring the effortless movement of the floorhead. Further, the conical design of the suction

hose improves the airflow, with its increased diameter, and a newly developed Eco Comfort handle with integrated dusting brush. The best possible A-rating for dust emissions is achieved thanks to a new AirClean Plus filter, which is more permeable to the flow of air, whilst still providing more effective filtration than conventional models. Stronger and more effective dustbags: Miele dustbags have also undergone further development to keep pace with the new energy-efficient vacuum cleaners. The new HyClean 3D Efficiency dustbags are made from random-spun fibre and have a softer feel (SoftStructure). This results in less impedance to airflow. Dust distributes more evenly in the new

dustbags, which inflate to give a 3D effect. This extends the bag's useful life by around 20%. Thanks to its stability and tear-proof qualities, the newly developed dustbags are also ideal for highwattage models. To conclude, with Miele Vacuum Cleaners you can have it all. Our NEW Miele vacuum cleaner models boast the best energy efficiency on the market, and high-end cleaning performance on both carpets and hard flooring, as well as reduced dust emissions.

To view the full range of Miele vacuum cleaners, visit goozi Kitchenshop and ask for a demonstration.

Purchase any Miele vacuum cleaner during September and receive a FREE pack of Dustbags

Milkwood ... and s Girl

RestauRant

T

the

here can be no better illustration of the change that took place or a more clear inspiration than Carol and Jo’s impressions of the Old Lady, The Milkwood, as they saw her, sad and deprived as she was on that winter day.

Carol stood firm and determined in front of me and tears formed in Jo’s eyes at the sad side of their new business venue. “She is an overworked, undervalued ‘Lady of the Night” and we are going to give her a facelift, a boob job, tummy tuck … and a butt implant “Carol said. Only a few months later The Milkwood is given back her old glory and a new status. We can now all be proud of her again. Admire her beauty and experience her services, as she stands gracious and tall, revealing herself as a true destination restaurant. This was not an easy task or just a clean-up operation. This was a skin deep, complete makeover. The girls do nothing half heartedly, they do it right or not at all. I know Carol and Jo as clients that became friends. They owned an upmarket guest house in the centre of Cape Town and I was privileged to be part of the decorating team at Der went House. Many times I left the guest house with the thought of “well done, girls”. They are dynamic business women, passionate about everything they take on, disciplined and hardworking. But most of all, they have vision. They know what they want and how they want it. I was time and time again impressed with their management skills as Derwent House went from strength to strength.

7 days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a special Sunday buffet. Local Chef Bridget Bartleman’s menus are good fresh food with emphasis on local products. It’s a bistro menu with a touch of Italian, French and Mexican dishes. The lunch is served café style, while the evening menus shift to a more elegant format. The Milkwood’s little sister, The Beach Hut, gives the impression of a giant doll’s house with ice-cream colours, but believe me, this is where the men are going to play! Cold beers plus flat screen TV, here they can have one eye on the kids playing in the lagoon below the deck and have lunch with the rest of the family or stay on for Tapas and cocktails, watching the sunset on our beautiful Village. Dog lovers will always find a fresh water bowl and a doggy biscuit for the four legged. The Milkwood Bistro and Beach Hut have now become the destination for locals and visitors. Once again, I am looking back with the thought;” Well done, Girls”. PS A 15% discount will be offered for the month of September

Meanwhile not many knew the girls were living among us, calling Vermont their home and commuting to Cape Town. It was with the arrival of their son, Jackson that the need grew to stay permanently in Vermont and bring their child up in a village. The girls soon discovered the property they were looking for and bought Mentmor, a year ago, to transform into a boutique hotel. They sold their beloved Derwent House and became proper Onrus Locals, LOC as the surfer- boys would say. The Milkwood restaurant appeared on their path and they took on the challenge keenly. Fell in love with her charm and character. The restaurant has an open, fresh feeling now, inside and out harmonising, creating a sense of movement; making use of the natural colours of ocean, sand and rocks, without the typical beach style interior. An overall sassy pavilion, lively, bold and full of light. A coffee counter is the focus point and a display area for cakes and pastries for day time seduction, cocktails and candlelight in the evenings. The restaurant will be open

en my gedagtes daaroor

This will be the last article in the series before the World Cup 2015. The next article will be some way into the World Cup and we will be able to evaluate whether our thinking was correct or not. Success or the contrary will give us some insight into the correctness or not of our decisions. I would also like to get some feedback or opinions on my line of thinking from the readers.

Tendai Mtawaria (1) 5. Trevor nyakane (1) 6. scarra ntubeni (2) 7. rudy paige (9)

September

tide table 2015

10. lwazi Mvovo (11) 11. Jp pietersen (14) 12. raymond rhule (14) I perceive the above players to be selected purely on merit and what is more it should give them the support of 53 million passionate South Africans. What a motivation will that not be! They also represent an investment in the future. The third group of players will be in the rest of the main frame. The main frame represents the engine room of the team. In most instances they create opportunities for the team. We have already selected seven of them, and the rest are as follows: 13. bismarck du plessis (2) 14. schalk britz (2) 15. Jannie du plessis (3) 16. Frans Malherbe (3) 17. eben etsebeth (4) 18. lood de Jager (5) 19. pieter du Toit (4) 20. Victor Matfield (5) 21. schalk burger (8) 22. duane Vermeulen (8) 23.

Is ek krities teenoor hierdie span? Yes, I think that we lack some experience in the number 9 position, but if the above two scrumhalves could play that well behind the pack of forwards as they did in the Super 15 they should do even better behind a Springbok pack supplying them with better quality possession. They are both fast distributors of the ball, unpredictable and devastating on the attack. Fast ball will give our backline more time to do more damage. That is what we need with the dangerous outside backs that we have.

he principles of decision making with regard to player selection will be the following: 1. kickers 2. transformation 3. the main frame of selection 4. the players outside of the main frame 5. the Captain and his successor, in case of injury. 1. Morné steyn (10) 2. Russian activist raises concerns regarding nuclear development in our area by Alta Pretorius

V

ladimir Slivyak is a founder member of Ecodefense in Russia, a prominent anti-nuclear group, as well as being a senior lecturer in environmental policy at the Higher School of Economics in Moscow.

He addressed a group of invited guests regarding the potential dangerous consequences of the plans for Russian/South African rapid nuclear development.

Vladimir Slivyak (Russian anti-nuclear activist)

He was invited by the Save Bantamsklip organisation. Bantamsklip is located on the pristine coastline near Gansbaai, on the south-western Overberg coast in South Africa. The National energy provider Eskom, aided and abetted by the South African Government, has earmarked Bantamsklip as one of the preferred sites for its nuclear power station ‘roll out’. The Bantamsklip Organisation believes this is inappropriate and ill-advised. The area around Bantamsklip is recognised as a World botanical ‘hot-spot’ and worth conserving as an island in a sea of private and public nature reserves, marine reserves, national parks, heritage sites and Special Management Areas. Earthlife Africa is also against the development, and has published a report named: "Pay more for Nuclear" by Vladimir Slivyak. At the meeting on Saturday Slivyak highlighted the dangers of continuing the development and warned against corruption and safety factors. According to him, there are frequent accidents in the nuclear reactors in Russia. He said South Africa and Russia signed an intergovernmental agreement on a strategic nuclear partnership on 22 September 2014. The Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom reported it was already covering 45% of South African uranium needs under the agreement until 2020. In November 2014 Russian nuclear engineers presented their new reactor design VVER-TOI in South Africa. However, major problems have been reported by Russian media on corruption and safety concerns related to the construction of several similar reactors in Russia. Among the major concerns are the high risk of accidents, vulnerability to piracy and terrorism threats, and the increased risk of proliferation of nuclear materials. Some of the projects have been delayed, and in some cases stopped, mainly due to harsh criticism by environmental movements on safety and financing issues. Environmental groups from both Russia and Europe successfully campaigned against projects, by pushing European banks and companies to stay away.

“Nuclear is technology of the past, not the future,” was the main message by Vladimir Slivyak at a meeting in Hermanus on Saturday 9 August.

The reprocessing of nuclear waste is another major concern. According to governmental sources, about 500 million tons of radioactive waste is accumulated at various facilities across Russia. There is no clear plan as to solving the waste problem. Some of the storage facilities across Russia are in poor condition and require urgent measures to avoid radiation leaks. Apart from the well-known Chernobil disaster, another devastating nuclear accident in 1957 at the Chelyabinsk region caused widespread radioactive contamination and led to the resettlement of 20,000 residents in subsequent years. In 2005 illegal dumping of radioactive waste into the Techa River led to a court case, but no resettlement funding was made available to affected residents, many of them suffering from radiation-caused illnesses. Accidents and radiation leakages occur frequently at other sites, according to Slivyak. “The latest experience with the newly-built Kalinin-4 Unit puts its declared high level of safety in doubt. A hydrogen explosion occurred at the reactor on 26 November 2011, according to the regulatory body Rostekhdnadzor. Within two months following the reactor launch, eleven incidents were reported, including emergency shutdowns and primary circulation pipe failures. The accident prompted serious public concern about possible radio-active leaks.” Rosatom’s previous experience negotiating deals in the EU had not been good, and significant delays were experienced. Corruption risks have been high in the Russian nuclear industry. In 2000 the environmental group Ecodefense managed to foil a Rosatom deal which envisioned the building of a nuclear waste repository on an uninhibited island in the Far East, Simushir. In November 2010 two non-governmental groups – Transparency International and Ecodefense, published a study analysing 200 orders placed by Rosatom, revealing numerous violations of the industry procurement standard. Purchasing activities of Rosatom companies fall under no external control, leading to a lack of transparency. After the study was published, more than 270 Rosatom employees were fired over corruption allegations, some of them high-ranking officials. In November 2014, the FBI arrested the director of Rosatom’s fuel supply arm. Vadim Mikerin is alleged to have accepted bribes of around 1, 7 million US dollars from three American business people in exchange for tenders. Rosatom remains one of the largest nuclear energy producers and reactor suppliers in the world. The current new VVER-TOU being promoted currently, has never been tested in practical operation in Russia. Existing Russian reactors do not demonstrate a high level of safety, and very serious concerns exist with regard to Russia’s aging reactors, which are still operating after their original operating life has expired. The risk of new nuclear accidents is growing.

Historically, the Russian environmental movement has been successful in halting reactor construction at several sites. Civil society groups have played an important role in anti-corruption activities related to the nuclear industry.

Storage of nuclear waste was another concern which Vladimir echoed. He said there was no guarantee that nuclear waste will be efficiently disposed of or stored for a prolonged period. It remains risky and a major security threat.

Vladimir Slivyak concluded by saying: The lack of transparency, widespread corruption, failure to demonstrate high levels of safety, and the unresolved waste and decommissioning issues must be of high concern to any potential customer of Rosatom’s on the international market.”

He also confirmed that the Russian government will be indemnified against any accidents or negative outcomes.

Regarding questions on the effect on local tourism if the Bantamsklip development continues, Vladimir said it would definitely have an effect on tourism and the fishing industry in the area. If underground water were to be contaminated by radiation leaks, it could have wide-spread consequences. Fielding a question on the possibility of job creation, Slivyak said the work is specialised, and experts will be brought in. For a limited time there would be job opportunities in the building industry, but Nuclear Reactors are not major job creators.

Vladimir advised against the use of nuclear energy and said it was a technology of the past, on its way out. “Rather focus on renewable energy, which will become cheaper, the more people use it. It will also create more jobs, and is the cheapest way of solving energy problems.” Rodney Anderson appealed to concerned people to register during the public participation process regarding the proposed development of a nuclear plant near Gansbaai. He said a court case is currently hanging, which will hopefully inhibit the proceedings of the programme.
