ACTIVE LIVING is a supplement to The Spokesman-Review • Friday, April 22, 2022

Greetings, Active Living Expo guests:

active living

CAPTURE A MEMORY Stop by the Revived Mobility photo booth!

We’ll provide a complimentary photo of you – or you and your pals – complete with props and a fun background.

Have you been waking up early ever since “spring forward” a few weeks back? Are you itching for something fun, cheap, and engaging to do? We got you covered! Today The Spokesman-Review brings back its ever-popular Active Living EXPO in-person from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Davenport Grand Hotel! Just $7 gets you in the door and into the main ballroom and classrooms, where you can start your engines with a mini-Pilates session. Or a session on outdoor adventures you can do right here in the Inland Northwest. You can get ideas for shedding your drab grey and black “work from home” garb at a fun spring/summer fashion show. You can hear decluttering tips for your home from a certified tidying expert. You’re a Spokesman-Review subscriber? Well first, thank you! We’re so glad you enjoy the work of our skilled journalists, and that you support our advertisers, too. Because you’re an S-R subscriber, you can get a special two-for-one ticket to the Active Living EXPO before the event at spokesman.com/activelivingexpo/ and clicking “Buy Tickets.” Then use the promo code SRSUBACTIVELIVING2022 at checkout. MultiCare Health System Inland Northwest has returned as Active Living’s Presenting Sponsor. That means three skilled orthopedic surgeons will be on site to discuss options for dealing with pain and injuries in our bones, joints, and more. With doctorly advice firmly noted, you can move on to other classes throughout the day. • Need a primer on estate planning? Free session.

Financial | Retirement

Dollars and Sense T

here’s a lot of new things to learn when you get older. Even if you had the foresight to start a retirement account or invest in an employer’s plan earlier in life, there’s still a lot to think about and decisions to be made when you start to approach retirement range. How long do you want to keep on working? What do you want to spend your money on when you’re done working? What do you need to do to make sure your family members are

financially protected when your time is up? What other costs will you have to pay? What if you or a family member get sick or injured? Do you want to stay home or do you want to relocate? Do you want or need to keep on working? Everyone will have different answers to these questions, but a common piece of advice is: the sooner you answer them the better off you and your family will be and avoid messy or expensive situations later.

Luckily, there are skilled people in the area to help you with everything from needed legal paperwork to objective advice on what care you’ll need and ways how to create a better budget. It’s true your golden years are supposed to be all about rest and relaxation, but it does take some degree of effort to make sure they remain as golden as possible.

Active | Volunteering

GIVING BACK A

recent study showed that, if paid, the average volunteer at a nonprofit, should be receive $28/hour.

That means that an organization doesn’t have to pay this amount to an employee, and can instead use this money for other programs and activities. And b) that they should make sure their volunteers are appreciated.

In some cases, someone who is retired can do “the best parts of their job” for an organization they like, and not have to deal with the parts of employment they didn’t care about.

Even organizations that aren’t strictly nonprofits may welcome volunteer help: hospitals can use guides. Museums can use docents and schools may have committees.

At the same time, organizations can benefit from skilled help and expertise.

Look around – the Active Living Expo can open doors to fuel your interest in giving back.

Other studies have shown that getting involved in one’s community – especially a non-profit or charity – can let people directly Volunteers bring plenty of value to both the feel like they’re making a difference. They can person giving their time and talents, and to the have a sense of satisfaction and happiness, organization benefitting from them. plus a fun place to spend their time.

So it should come as no surprise that the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, which was conducted by the American Pet Products Association, found that about 85 million families in the United States own a pet. In Canada, 7.5 million households are home to companion animals, states the PetBacker blog. Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial. The organization A Place for Mom, which helps match families with senior living residences, says pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones

while also increasing production of the feelgood hormone serotonin.

Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so.

This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study from the Mayo Clinic, which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels.

• Reduce pain: A 2012 study published in Pain Magazine found therapy dogs provided “significant reduction in pain and emotional distress for chronic pain patients.”

Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors — including those who may be divorced or widowed — feel more secure and happy. The National Poll on Healthy Aging found that, among respondents who had pets, 88 percent said their pets helped them enjoy life, and 86 percent said their pets made them feel loved.

• Feeling of purpose: Caring for an animal not only stimulates physical activity, but it also can give seniors a reason to get up and go, which equates to a feeling of purpose. • Altered focus: Having a pet can help seniors focus on something other than physical or mental health issues and preoccupations about loss or aging, according to New York-based psychologist Penny B. Donnenfeld. Metrocreative

Travel

Budgeting for long

VACATIONS ABROAD

S

eniors typically have more time to travel than other groups. That freedom entices many to travel overseas, often for extended periods of time.

The cost comparison site CostAide indicates that the average two-week vacation for two to Amsterdam can run around $5,000 to $6,000. Lengthen that trip to a month, and a vacation of one’s dreams can set a couple back $12,000. Change the destination and costs could get even higher. The last thing any traveler wants is to run out of money during a dream vacation. This makes figuring out costs and budgeting for such trips essential. Seniors planning the trip of a lifetime can consider these tips to budget effectively and maximize their vacation dollars. AIR TRAVEL Transportation abroad undoubtably will be one of the largest expenses travelers incur. Check prices from multiple airports in your area for the best

rates, even if it means having to drive a bit further. If you have only one local airport, book a separate flight to a travel hub, such as Atlanta or New York, so you can comparison shop more affordable flights to your final destination.

LOOK INTO LODGING There is a lot of wiggle room when it comes to lodging and price points. You can stay in five-star hotels and pay a premium or consider hostels if bells and whistles aren’t your priority. Keep in mind that a longer stay could come with a discount. Airbnb, for example, lets hosts list weekly or monthly prices, with monthly discounts running 40 to 60 percent less than daily rates.

Plan a year or two out for the trip and shop around for travel rewards credit cards that provide reward earnings in the way of airline miles; start accumulating them with everyday purchases. If you use airline rewards wisely, you won’t need to FOOD budget for the flight and may enjoy extra perks like Food is a priority when traveling. If you can stay priority boarding or free baggage check. in accommodations with a kitchenette, you can reduce dining costs and make meals as desired. CALCULATE PRE-TRIP PRICES Start shopping destinations to see which locales Food plans are another consideration. Book align with your budget. Compare and contrast destinations that offer an all-inclusive or a meal estimates as to how much each destination may plan option. It may not be the cheapest alternative, cost on a daily basis. Prices can vary widely but you’ll have peace of mind knowing food costs depending on the destination, and this is a great already are covered. way to some pretrip notion of what your dream Budgeting for a long trip means understanding average costs, deciding on priorities and utilizing discounts at one’s disposal. HEALTHY EATING OPTIONS FOR SENIORS

L

et food be thy medicine” is a quote attributed to Hippocrates, the ancient scholar considered to be the father of modern medicine. The saying relates to the notion that what people put in their bodies can heal and/or prevent certain conditions. For seniors with medicine cabinets full of over-the-counter and prescription medications, the idea of relying predominantly on food to promote optimal health may be tempting, and various foods can be particularly useful to the 50-andover demographic. According to the World Health Organization, poor diet is a major contributor to many of the diseases that affect older people. Poor diet has been connected to the development of diabetes, and degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis also may be linked to the foods ones eat. The National Council for Aging Care says micronutrient deficiency is often a problem among the aging due to factors like lack of variety in diet and reduced food intake. Eating a

variety of foods can provide all of the nutrients people need to stay healthy as they get older. Certain foods may be particularly helpful. • Brain-friendly foods: Foods such as avocado, leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, blueberries, and salmon are good sources of vitamin E, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients that may help ward off dementias like Alzheimer’s disease, advises Sonas Home Health Care. • Anti-inflammatory foods: Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent inflammation that can cause cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Aging.com says foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, should be consumed at least twice per week. • Fruits and vegetables: Fresh, canned or frozen produce tend to be high in micronutrients, including a variety of important vitamins that are essential for all components of health. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics advises eating dark

green vegetables, such as leafy greens or broccoli, and orange vegetables, such as carrots and sweet potatoes. • Energy-boosters: Choose whole grains that can provide sustained energy by way of healthy carbohydrates over processed grains. • Bone-friendly foods: Calcium-rich foods, such as milk, yogurt and cheese, can prevent calcium from being leached from the bones, which contributes to conditions like osteoporosis.

• Digestive system-friendly foods: The digestive system slows down as the body ages, as the walls of the gastrointestinal tract thicken and digestive contractions that push waste along may slow down and become fewer. Foods rich in fiber can promote proper digestion by moving food through the digestive tract mor easily. Highfiber foods also may help naturally reduce blood cholesterol levels.

23

• High-iron foods: Without enough iron in the body, a person may feel tired and lethargic from a reduced production of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood from the lungs to the rest of the body. A lack of oxygen in body tissues from anemia can be serious, says the National Council for Aging Care. Tofu, spinach, lentils, pumpkin seeds, and fortified breads and cereals are high in iron.
