AUGUST 14, 2024

How you start your morning can impact the rest of your day. If you’re looking to incorporate healthier choices into your morning routine, try a concept known as “habit stacking.”

Building tiny, healthier habits into routines you already have, like enjoying a morning beverage or breakfast before you check your email instead of jumping right into the day’s tasks, can make it easier to stick to a new habit when it’s built into an existing routine.

If you already enjoy the routine of breakfast to start the day, consider swapping sugary drinks for beverages without added sugars like unsweetened green or black tea. When incorporated as part of an overall healthy diet, unsweetened tea can help support heart health.

If you need help getting started, Lipton, a proud national sponsor of the American Heart Association’s Life is Why campaign, created these easy-tomake, better-for-you tea recipes.

A small handful of ingredients makes a big splash in Green Tea Berry Banana Smoothies, ideal for an on-the-go breakfast. For a little refreshment any time of day, simple Sparkling Green Tea Cranberry Spritzers offer a solution with 0 grams of added sugars while non-alcoholic Green Tea Mojito Mocktails provide natural sweetness with 100% fruit juice.

Choosing beverages with no added sugars can contribute to a healthy heart, according to the American Heart Association, making these recipes perfect for daily habit stacking. Water is needed to keep your body running at its best, and because unsweetened tea is 99.5 % water, it provides a delicious way to help hydrate.

Make Banana Boats: A Camping and Backyard-Grilling Treat

Benjamin Franklin gets credit for saying that there are only two things certain in life: death and taxes. Hey, Ben, do you mind if I add bananas to your list?

No matter the time of the year, I’m always certain that when I take a trip to my local grocery store, there will be a bunch or more of the yellow treasures that end up in my shopping cart. They are relatively inexpensive and healthy (potassium-rich), and they come naturally well-wrapped.

Toss bananas in your kids’ sports bags when they head off to soccer practice, or tuck them in your carry-on for an instant snack on a flight to your summer destination. You just can’t beat that dependable, always-in-season, always-there banana.

No, I’m not a spokeswoman for the banana council, but I am a real fan of the fruit, even if I sometimes complain that they go from yellow to brown way too fast -- or when they end up smooshed in the bottom of a kid’s backpack, not to be discovered for a week or two.

Here is another reason to make certain that enough bananas make it home from the grocery store. You can create, concoct and cook this yummy “Banana Boat” dessert treat with kids on a camping trip, or you can fire up the grill at a designated picnic spot at a city park or in your own backyard.

BANANA BOATS

Serves 6

6 firm, ripe bananas

Chocolate candy bars, broken into pieces, or chocolate chip morsels

Marshmallows, miniature or regular

Aluminum foil

Slice each banana just through the skin, lengthwise without removing the peel. Use a teaspoon to scoop out a small amount of the banana, about the length of the slice, to create a little cavity. Tuck the chocolate bits and pieces and the marshmallows into the cavity of the sliced banana.

Wrap each entire banana in foil and place directly on the coals of a campfire or on a grill. Cook until chocolate and marshmallows are melted, about 8-10 minutes.

Remove with tongs. Unwrap and eat with a spoon. Yummy!

Cook’s Note: Add nuts, granola, dried fruit or other toppings, if you wish.

Tip: If you have extra bananas that are starting to turn brown, peel them, wrap them in plastic wrap, store them in a freezer bag, and freeze. Eat them whole while they’re slightly frozen, mash them for baking, or toss them into a blender with your favorite smoothie ingredients.

Goggins is currently juggling several shows: HBO’s “The Righteous Gemstones,” Amazon Prime Video’s “Fallout,” and the upcoming new season of “The White Lotus” (also on HBO). Meanwhile, Olyphant will star opposite Tom Hardy in the film “Havoc.” He also has another FX project on the horizon, a prequel series based on the “Alien” movies, titled “Alien: Earth.” Perhaps after some much needed rest for the stars, “Justified” will find its way into production again. ***

Q: With movies being so expensive these days, I missed “The Fall Guy” in theaters. Will it be available to stream anywhere soon? -- M.M.

A: Yes, romantic comedies are in big demand from the public, but due to inflation, moviegoing seems to be on the decline, except for big-budget action flicks like “Twisters” or anything in the Marvel or DC Universes. “The Fall Guy” cost $140 million to make, but only grossed $28 million its opening weekend, a shocking disappointment with stars like Ryan

Gosling and Emily Blunt as leads. The rom-com adventure film had all the recipes for a hit, but it just didn’t produce.

The film was available to rent or purchase as early as May 21, and it came out on DVD a month later.

Beginning Friday, Aug. 30, you can watch the movie on the Peacock streaming service, which costs $7.99 a month with ads or $13.99 a month ad-free.

NEW VA LOGIN ACCOUNT

Veterans who access their benefits and health care info online will begin using a new login method, starting now and extending over the next year.

Account security is the reason behind the changes, per the Executive Order on cybersecurity that was signed in 2021. Whether you use VA.gov online or the mobile app to access your Login.gov or ID.me account, you’ll need to log in and create a new account. It should only take a few minutes. Make your first stop the instructions at www.va.gov/signin-changes. You’ll see that the cut-off to keep using your current username and password will be in January 2025 for My HealtheVet and September 2025 for the DS Logon. At that point you’ll be locked out until you create a new account, either via Login.gov or ID.me. (No, they won’t delete your info; you just won’t be able to get in.) Both of them will allow you to access all of your benefits and services.

You’ll be able to check claim status, refill prescriptions, look at lab results, update contact info and much more. Be prepared for being required to use two-factor authentication, also known as multifactor authentication. If you’re like so many of us, you don’t like being forced to do the extra steps to log in somewhere. But so much of what we do online now involves using two-factor authentication, with more switching to that method every day. Whether it’s our bank or online accounts, we have to get used to it. Between ID theft, having personal information stolen, having money stolen through fraud (in one year, veterans had $350 million stolen through fraud) -- the thieves aren’t going to stop.

Before you choose your new account, read the privacy policy for both Login.gov and ID.me. They’re not the same. And what if you don’t want either of the offered account types? That’s fine. You’ll just need to contact and interact with the VA by mail, in person or on the phone.

Fighting the heat

When cooling centers are opened up in our town, you know it’s brutally hot. It’s not something that’s usually done around here. But recent temperatures have been shocking for our area.

I made a tour of the cooling stations one afternoon, fully expecting them to be mostly empty as warming stations are in winter when people manage to stay warm at home. But no, this heat was different.

There was the library, with more people than chairs, the grateful patrons sitting on the floor against the walls and most of the electrical outlets connected to phones and laptops. There was the church with the huge community center facility that cranked their air conditioning down and opened the doors to welcome anyone who needed to cool off. The church ladies went into action and put out trays of cold sandwiches and bottles of water.

At the town hall, the doors to

the taxation department where we pay for our car tags were left open long after their normal business hours, and the fire department showed up with pizzas in hand for those who’d taken refuge in the office.

The rec center seemed to be the place where many people brought sleeping pads made of folded blankets, getting the first good rest they’d likely had in a week. The whole of two basketball courts was covered in makeshift beds, and as the hour got later the staff dimmed the lights to coax the children to wind down and fall asleep. As seniors, we aren’t physically equipped to handle the brutal temperatures that have suffocated the country recently. If you’re in a hot area and have no air conditioning, seek out a cooling center. If there aren’t any, go to the library, the rec center or, better yet, the town offices to insist that they open cooling centers in town.

HOW FAR CAN A PUPPY HIKE?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a 1-year-old mixed-breed puppy named “Star” who I’d love to take on Saturday hikes with me. I’m an avid hiker who can do up to 20 miles or more per day. Is this too much for a young dog like her to handle? -- Gary in Boulder, Colorado

DEAR GARY: Your instincts are right-on -- that kind of mileage is too much for a puppy. But, depending on the dog, you can build Star’s stamina gradually, adding miles as she grows. For a 1-year-old puppy, start with no more than a mile or two, and keep it light and fun. If Star whines

and pocket breeds -- cannot walk very far without tiring. (Fortunately, they can be

Don’t lament if hiking ultimately isn’t Star’s thing; just build an outdoor schedule where she can share in the fun on some days with short hikes, and you can still get in lots of mileage while she remains at home or with a friend.

An adult dog can do 5 to 20 miles depending on their fitness and enthusiasm. But you’ll need to adjust your lifestyle to gradually bring Star up to that kind of distance. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

Vanessa Williams (Upcoming in the musical “The Devil Wears Prada”) Depositphotos

HOLLYWOOD -- I wonder what Clint Eastwood thinks of the upcoming remake of his perfect 1964 classic film “A Fistful of Dollars,” in which he played “the Man with No Name.” This launched his film career and gave birth to the “spaghetti western” genre. When I ran into Clint in 1964 in NYC after he returned from Italy, where he was shooting that classic, he said, “I’m really nervous because I didn’t have a word of dialogue in that film.” I assured him that with his looks and charisma, it would be a cinch for the movie to

hit it big, and it did! The remake’s currently shooting in Italy.

***

Also headed for a remake is “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006), which starred Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt and Anne Hathaway. It cost $40 million and earned $326.7 million for 20th Century Fox (now owned by Disney). Could they suddenly want to remake it because Vanessa Williams is about to star in a musical version of the show in London on Aug. 17? Oh, yes, and the score for her musical was written by Sir Elton John! Williams said of the character Miranda Priestly, “I channel Miranda through the dialogue [from the film].”

Nicolas Cage’s breakout film was 1983’s “Valley Girl,” followed by his starring in major roles in more than 120 films. He won an Oscar for “Leaving Las Vegas” in 1997. This year, he starred in the post-apocalyptic, action-horror film “Arcadian,” which was released in April. He also starred in the psychological thriller “The

Surfer,” which scored at the Cannes Film Festival in May, as well as the horror thriller “Longlegs,” with Blair Underwood and Alicia Witt, which opened on July 12.

Already in the can is “The Gunslingers,” co-starring Heather Graham and Stephen Dorff. It’s about a reformed gunslinger and a mad genius in a town named Redemption. Cage is currently preparing for “The Prince,” with Giancarlo Esposito and Andy Garcia. It was inspired by second son Hunter Biden, with a screenplay by acclaimed writer David Mamet.

Despite all this, Cage, at 60, is talking about retiring from acting in films. He stated,”I may have three or four more movies left in me. ... I do feel I’ve said what I’ve had to say with cinema.” He admitted that one of his favorite films was 2021’s “Pig,” in which he played an Oregon truffle-hunter whose pig is kidnapped. It cost a mere $3 million and only grossed $3.9 million.

Cage was then relegated to a voice role in “Spider-man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” which co-stars Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Jake Johnson, Oscar Isaac, Jason Schwartzman, Issa Rae, John Mulaney, and Mahershala Ali. Is this a fitting exit film and the best way to end an impressive Oscar-winning acting career? If he planned to go out on top, this is not the one to go out with; it will leave his fans totally Cagefree!

Confession time: I’m not a happy camper. I really don’t enjoy camping. Roughing it, sleeping in a sleeping bag in a tent in the wild. No thanks. It’s a little too quiet for me. If my hotel room faces the trees, I would consider that to be camping. But it seems like everyone’s going camping, and that got me thinking about the one camp tradition I can get behind: S’mores!

This warm, ooey, gooey treat always leaves us wanting some more. Which is where the name is believed to originate. As in “I want s’more!” It’s uncertain who invented the s’more, but Loretta Scott Crew, who made them for Girl Scouts by the campfire, is given credit for the recipe when it was first published in a 1927 publication called “Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts.” But it wasn’t until 1974 when Merriam-Webster added it to the dictionary, making it official.

Of course, much of the fun of s’mores is cooking them with friends and family over a campfire, but if you don’t have access to a fire, don’t despair! These can be made on a BBQ, the stovetop or, my personal favorite, with a kitchen torch.

Here’s how to make classic s’mores and a few creative variations to enjoy.

Classic S’mores

Yield: 1 serving

Total Time: 3 minutes

2 graham crackers

1 large marshmallow

1 piece of milk chocolate (about 1 ounce)

If you’re using a campfire, roast the marshmallow on a skewer over the flames until it’s golden brown and gooey (about 1-2 minutes). If you’re indoors, you can toast it over a gas stove or in the oven under broiler for a few seconds. Place one graham cracker on a plate. Top it with a piece of chocolate. Once your marshmallow is toasted, carefully place it on top of the chocolate. Add the second graham cracker on top and press down gently. Let it sit for a few seconds to
